There's a little story to go with this comic:

Before attending the Malmö gig I had been at both Helsinki gigs - on the second day I went as Häärijä (in suit and everything) flying a danish flag in the crowd the entire evening.

Now at some point I had my stomach drop hard and I realised it was because Bojan had caught and held my eye contact for 5 seconds without blinking OVO.

Fast forward 12 days and I went to Joker Out's Malmö concert where I was lucky enough to meet Bojan afterwards. After hugging, 'are you'ing and chatting for a few minutes Bojan offhandly mentioned: Oh, I remember you from Helsinki - you went as Häärijä, right?

I swear, had I been able to melt like in this comic I would :'D

I find it kind of silly that so many of those "time based life rule" sayings are like ~deep serious guidelines~ of some sort, but then there's that one other Well Known Rule that's just like "hrmm can I eat something off of the ground or not"

#the duality of human condition.. two biggest concerns in the modern era are attempts at self fulfilling productivity #and also 'if i drop my sandwich can i still eat it :(' #Also while capitalism is often linked with/the source of hyper productivity culture - note that I do not mean the images in that context #'meaningful to you' does not have to mean 'productive within a capitalist system'. The point is not 'every waking hour of every day #must be spent in the most societally productive grinding mindset hyper efficency mode possible' but more like #if you've always wanted to learn french ever since you were a kid and you think it would be fulfilling to you (just because you like it #absent of any larger purpose like using it for a job/monetizing it somehow/etc.). and you've just spent like 5 hours straight on tiktok #or something mindlessly scrolling the internet. maybe someimtes it'd help for your own personal fulfillment in the long #run to try to - the next time you have 5 spare hours - work on learning french or something that is actually significant to you #as a person and that you'll be glad you worked towards. instead of weeks and weeks passing by and feeling you have nothing to show for it #or etc. AAANYWAY. The images/rules themselves are also NOT the main point of this post. More just the juxtaposition of them together #and the fact that 3 of them are serious seeming while one is so mundane it seems silly in comparison. #BUT even though they're not the main point . I still didn't want it to come across as if I was like promoting or buying into capitalist #productivity culture propaganda or etc. I don't find productivity tips like this inherently bad as long as they're kind of divorced from #those ideas. I think it's still important in life to have goals even if those goals exist outside of the typical expected framework. #I mean that's actually part of why a culture of chronically exhausted overworked deprived people is damaging because if you #'re forced to spend 85% of your waking time working at some job that is perosnally meaningless to you that brings you nothing that #youre only doing under threat of starvation and houselesness and etc. then of course you don't have much time for hobbies or things you car #about and of course you'll feel more aimless and personally unsatisfied and like life is not fulfilling or interesting. #Productivity and efficiency is GOOD actually. as long as it's able to be directed in ways that are actually meaingful to the community or #individual and bring some sort of feeling of fulfillment or progress or accomplishment and working towards a person's personal ideas #of happiness whatever those are. rather than just working away aimlessly so some guy you don't know can buy a 20th house or etc. etc. #ANYWAY.. lol.. i've watched a lot of good films lately in an attempt to catch up with a bunch of movies that have come out recently, but talk to me was the best movie i've seen in a LONG time

#i put off watching it for so long because i was sure it was overrated + i'm generally not a fan of possession movies #(because so many of them try to be the exorcist and they will never be the exorcist. you know how it is) #but holy shit. genuinely a brilliant movie in every aspect of filmmaking + completely aligned with my personal taste #+ exactly what i look for thematically in possession and/or ghost movies #+ the absolute perfect balance between psychological and gory #and like i said SUCH a good cold opening #tbh i think it's a useful trick to know how to get your audience to buy into a supernatural premise from the very first scene #i think that takes some VERY effective + skillful writing and directing #and as someone who again typically does NOT like possession movies i usually end the movie NEVER buying into the story #not because i'm a 'skeptic' or whatever just because the writing doesn't do the work #but SCENE ONE of this movie i was so in it #anyway. movee of all time to me #also from the trailers etc i had thought that that fluffy yellow sweatshirt mia wears at the beginning of the movie was a bathrobe lmao #my first impression of what this movie was gonna be like was NOT correct #anyway 'recently' means in the past 2 years i guess? #actually maybe this post was a lie because i LOVED nope which was also just an absolute cinematic masterpiece #anytime i watch a jordan peele movie it's just like. this man is so far beyond any other filmmaker out there right now #it's almost unfair to watch lol like an olympic gold medalist running laps around a middle school track team #anyway ummm. yeah talk to me was good though

Sorry to just drop into this, but another thing to consider with handmade good and the ‘overpriced’ idea is that you also have to factor in how much stock might sell at any given time.

For example, if you make 100 pairs of earrings in a month but might only sell 30 (because you need to give people options etc.) then the profit from those 30 should reasonably cover the time you spent making all 100.

Also, it should pay for the time you spend at craft fairs, replying to any commissions/ purchase requests, packaging time and going to the post office, any online marketing you might do (tumblr posts etc).

Peolle don’t often factor these in when thinking about the value of crafts they buy, which is a bit unfair.

yes there are other overheads but the thing is. basically all of those to some extent also apply to fibre arts

but sure. to be thorough. i spend 10h a week at my market stall and an hour... let's say 2 be generous with it... updating the shop

if i made 50 pairs of earrings and sold 15, the "materials" cost of 1 pair, to cover their unsold breathren, goes from 42p to £1.40

earrings are far from the only thing though, and account for less than half of the sales. so. we can say that about 5h of stall/shop time is covered by those

(plus the hour it took to make them)

sale price - materials cost but split over 6 hours of labour instead of 1.5 is still £12 an hour

#but then. i don't charge for the time organising crochet commissions either #so even charging for labour on jewellery that i DON'T charge for in fibre arts #and more than triple the material cost #which really is fudging the numbers as much as possible in one direction to try and even them out #i can get it down to oh. just over double the hourly rate for crochet #the reason i dont charge for that labour in fibre arts is bc it's expensive enough as is #the reason i dont count 'market time' as paid labour for the other stuff is bc i am doing the exact same thing i would be at home #(making stuff and talking shit) #but downstairs instead of up here #it's a 5h craft hang but occasionally someone hands you money #which i think is a lot of the reason most [makers] dont count it #especially if it's a regular stall setup like mine and not a one-off craft fair #there's no set up/take it down again time it just stays there #i walk downstairs i make jewellery with my friends for 5h and then i go back upstairs again #(hell quite honestly me and babs dont count the money we spend on supplies for the simple reason of We Would Be Buying Them Anyway) #crafting is a disease with no known cure

PJO, Disney, and Palestine

I'm seeing some nonsense in the PJO fandom rn about how to support Palestine. And, though I'm by no means an expert, I am super super done seeing all the nastiness and bad takes. So I'm gonna try to clear up some confusion.

Long post ahead, bear with me <3

First, let me be real clear: Free Palestine.

I'm not getting into it more than that. You either know already or should know about the ongoing genocide. If you don't know, there are plenty of resources available.

Obviously, we should all be doing everything we can to support Palestine. There are lots of ways to do this. One of those ways is to observe boycotts called for by the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement.

BDS has a policy on Disney. But it does not mean what most of this fandom thinks it means.

Here is the official list of BDS targets as of three days ago (1/17/24):

You'll notice there are four types of targets. Let's go.

1.) Consumer boycott targets

This is the category most people think of. BDS has asked for a total consumer boycott of these brands. In other words: do not buy from these brands.

Worth noting: Sabra hummus is also a major part of this list. Not sure why it was left out of the graphic.

Here is more info from BDS about the reasoning for these choices. You'll notice that Disney is not in this target category. Let's move on.

2.) Divestment and exclusion targets

This category is about pressuring governments and institutions to end their dealings with these brands on a large scale.

It's really important to note that BDS is not asking consumers to boycott this category. The best way we can support is to put pressure on our institutions (e.g. local governments, universities).

Obviously, if you personally want to stop buying from these brands, you can! But that is not the ask from BDS right now. That is your personal choice.

Still don't see Disney, right? Moving on.

3.) Pressure targets

And here we have arrived!

BDS is asking us to conduct pressure campaigns against these targets.

This can include boycotting ("when reasonable alternatives exist")! It can also include:

lobbying (sending letters, emails, petitions...)

peaceful disruptions (nonviolent direct action, protests)

social media pressure ("hey followers, go sign this petition! go call this number!" "@ slimy corporation, why do you support genocide?")

Again, if you personally want to boycott these brands, go ahead! That is a valid and worthwhile choice that you can make. It's worth noting though that boycotting does not mean just pirating a show on a different platform.

Boycotting is about ending our support as consumers completely.

That means ending subscriptions, canceling accounts. It also means not consuming any products from these companies or their subsidiaries. For Disney that includes Marvel, ABC, ESPN, Pixar, National Geographic, and literally a billion others. For Google, it's not just the search engine but things like Google Docs and YouTube.

As you can imagine, a complete consumer boycott of these brands would be complicated. That is why, strategically, BDS is not asking for that at this time.

It is imperative that the movement to free Palestine is strategic and organized.

The BDS movement has been doing this work for a long time. Following their lead is a good idea. Directing our energy into the actions they recommend is efficient and vital.

I've seen a lot of people in this fandom saying to boycott Disney as if it's a top priority, or even harassing others for continuing to engage with Disney content. That is nonsense and unhelpful.

There is too much to do, urgently, for us to waste time.

That said, let's briefly go over the last category:

4.) Organic boycott targets

These are boycott campaigns that developed independently. While BDS is not diverting official energy towards fighting these brands, it does support the public in that fight.

In other words, don't buy from these brands.

Just be strategic and informed about it. And don't be an asshole. There is too much work still to do.
