🎵 and 🦖 for the ask game please :)
Hi, hope you're okay!! I'm so sorry, my ask box has been so full that I got none of your asks and now I've cleared it out a bit they've all suddenly reappeared, so I have no idea how long ago you sent this but I'm gonna answer anyway 😊
🎵 Last song you listened to? When a Drum Beats by Big Country, I've been listening to their music for days bc I'm seeing them live again in a couple of weeks!!
🦖 Favorite extinct animal? I've never really thought about it before, but I think Irish Elk would have been really cool to see if they were still around. Also I know they're not technically extinct any more but coelacanths are so fascinating from an extinction perspective

@california-112 asked: Trick or treat! 🎃🧛
Thanks for the ask! :D I got an email with your ask but it wasn't in my inbox so I hope this is all right!
I found this in a word doc from 2019 - it's a missing scene from Endeavour series 6, just some Morse and Thursday friendship fluff :)
---
Thursday finished his sentence then leaned over with a groan.
“Sir?”
He mostly straightened again. “Fine. Just sore.” His voice caught on the last word.
Morse pulled a chair closer. “Here, sit down. What exactly did they do to you?”
Thursday didn’t argue, but lowered himself slowly into the chair. “They had batons, I think. Box came in before they could do any real damage. Just bruising, mostly.”
“You sure you don’t need a hospital? Or I could ask Dr. Debryn.”
“Nah, I’m fine.” He hissed as he settled onto the back of the chair.
“Here, wait a minute.” Morse took off the hall and returned with a thin towel full of ice that he had twisted shut.
Thursday gave him a funny look when Morse handed him the makeshift ice pack. “You can figure this out but won’t take care of yourself after all your scrapes?”
Morse stuffed his hands in his pockets and smiled sheepishly. “I did actually take it easy when I was on light duties.”
“You saying I’m not?” Thursday said with mock offense, gingerly holding the pack to his side.
“Well, I didn’t get involved in any murder cases under DI Church.”
“Must not have been any interesting ones.”
Morse huffed a laugh. “You’re right. Can I get you some tea? Or anything?”
“Oh no, you’re all right.”
They fell silent as Morse paced around a little while Thursday adjusted the pack and breathed deeply.
“Thanks, for this,” Thursday said, more or less gesturing to the pack, or somewhat in general. “I’m sure you have things to do, you don’t have to fuss.”
“Of course. I’m not too worried, I’m sure Mrs. Thursday will take good care of you,” Morse said with a smile, one that Thursday did not return.
“Is…Mrs. Thursday all right, sir?” Morse asked hesitantly.
“She’s fine." Thursday sighed. "Not sure we are.”
Morse’s face fell. He looked off in the distance, and then at the floor. “I’m…sorry to hear that.”
“It’s my fault,” Thursday said more to himself. “I’ve been making a right mess of things. I just don’t know how to fix it.”
“You love each other, I’m sure you’ll work it out. Just a bump in the road.” Morse spoke quickly and flashed an attempt at a smile which ended up as more a grimace.
“Yeah.” Thursday stared straight ahead. After a few moments he sighed again. “How are you settling into your office?”
“Oh, not bad, I suppose,” Morse said, relieved at the change in subject. Imaging the Thursdays having the same troubles his parents did was almost too much to bear. “Away from ringing phones and typewriter clacks makes it easier to think. But it’s a lot of stairs and waiting for elevators.”
Thursday nodded. “I was hoping one of these days it’d be you and me in one of these shared offices.”
“With Jago’s connections I imagine he’ll be wanting to move up whenever the opportunity arises.”
Thursday gave Morse a bit of a look but didn’t contradict him.
“Can I give you a lift?”
Thursday managed a small smile. “At least that’s back to normal.”
“Slightly different route. But I’m glad to be back in a jag.”
“What, you didn’t like the little blue marked cars for uniform?” Thursday teased.
Morse offered a hand to help him up. “As you’ve said sir, a good detective and a poor policeman.”
---

🔬+🌈 pls :)
🔬The fic you had to make the most research for?
definitely SO, both because it's such a massive undertaking that touches on a lot of subject matters (one chapter i have to read up on how atmospheric re-entry works, and the next i need to figure out how a medic-trained-in-another-galaxy would approach field triage) and because it's a WIP, so until I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, there's likely more research waiting for me :3
🌈 Your favorite tropes to write about?
the ones that cannot possibly be in short fics/oneshots therefore must be multichap plot bunnies that will sit in my drafts for yearsandyearsand-
lol but srsly, i enjoy good angst, so im always up for tropes that let me tap into my Sad Feels. grief, melancholy, hopelessness, you name it. Unrequited Love? sign me up. Putting My Favorite In Mortal Danger? i got you. Conflicted Feelings Of Jealousy & Displacement? in spades, baby

@california-112 sent me an ask in regards to this meme - tumblr appears to have eaten your ask in my tumblr inbox, but I still got the email about it so I’m answering this way!
Wild Roses is probably the most self-indulgent thing I’ve ever written, and one passage in particular amuses me a lot:
Alpine Start Oatmeal
Set water to boil on your Whisperlite. Dump in some oatmeal. Contemplate the choices that have led you to this moment. Stir in a spoonful or two each of peanut butter and butter. Add dried fruit and/or sugar if you have them. Eat, considering whether your sleeping bag is still warm.
Optional: after an initial rinse with cold water, boil water in the dirty pot to clean it; use the dishwater to make vaguely oatmeal-flavored tea or cocoa or coffee.
The fic is peppered with recipes/sets of instructions, used as a kind of framing device/indicator of time skips. I decided to include recipes to try to kind of reflect how the episodes of the actual show are set up, as each episode usually revolves around a particular recipe or food (the show in question, Ingredients, was sponsored by a grocery store chain, and the episodes are often about some amazing dish you can make with something you can buy at that grocery store). This one in particular I also used to indicate a change in perspective; the previous recipes were informative and practical, without any real editorializing, because they were in the section that’s written from the perspective of a professional chef. This recipe introduces a set of sections written from the POV of the other main character, and so I also wrote the recipe in a way that felt more appropriate for him (after this, his section also transitions away from recipes to instructions more generally).
And, having given myself permission to have fun with it, I wrote this silly, grumbling-about-early-mornings oatmeal recipe--which remains one of my favorite things that I’ve written, maybe ever.

Mahonia and Aloe Vera please :)
Thanks Cosmo, hope you're well! 💛
mahonia ⇢ what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does? I love getting hit by inspiration when I'm doing lighting design at work - my favourites are finding the right moment for strobe, picking out costumes with UV or doing a cool snap silhouette ending, and I always either do a fist pump or a little celebration wiggle. If one specific tech is on sound with me he'll give an approving nod and a "nice" which I love
aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life? I really want that moment of making food for a loved one and having them initiate a dance round the kitchen to whatever music I have on while we wait for it to be ready. Just the intimacy of sharing food, music, space, the vulnerability of knowing we might not be the best dancers but it doesn't matter...

I think I stumbled upon some kind of ichthyological forbidden knowledge. Opened up a book of names that were never meant to be read.
You've probably heard of "can-opener smoothdream", right? It's practically a meme by now.
But the thing is, it's a deep-sea fish. And deep-sea fish have historically not had English names because nobody drops them into the conversation over a hot cuppa. Sure, there's generic stuff like hatchetfish and barreleye, but when you want to refer to the actual fish you're probably saying such euphonious phrases as Diretmus argenteus, Sternoptyx diaphana, or maybe even Opisthoproctus soleatus.
So whence "can-opener smoothdream"? Certainly no non-ichthyologist has ever used that name. It's not even a direct translation of the scientific name Chaenophryne longiceps - that would be "long-headed gape-toad". Which to me is even cooler than "can-opener smoothdream".
But I digress. The "dream" bit comes from the anglerfish family Oneirodidae, from oneiros, "dream", because those marvelous fishes look like they came out of a dream (Pietsch, 2009).
Note that Pietsch (2009), more or less the anglerfish bible, uses English names at the genus level only. So Chaenophryne is the smoothhead dreamers genus but no mention is made of "can-opener smoothdreams". So no luck there.
Wikipedia, root cause of a lot of misinformation, has this to say.
Tumblr media
"Longhead dreamer" is a far more accurate name. And in fact, despite Wikipedia prioritizing "can-opener smoothdream" (because it's funny?), the links listed use "longhead dreamer" and "smoothhead dreamer" as the name and "can-opener smoothdream" as an alternative.
So. Again. Where did "can-opener smoothdream" come from?
The answer, as it turns out, lies with McAllister (1990).
In the book A List of the Fishes of Canada, ichthyologist D. E. McAllister sought out to list every single fish known to Canadian waters, providing both an English and a French name.
And when there wasn't an English name, like for most deep-sea fishes, he arbitrarily gave them a name. And his names "differ in many instances from the widely accepted names" (Holm, 1998)
This had varying results. This is his name for one of the netdevil anglerfishes.
Tumblr media
The humpback anglerfish or blackdevil anglerfish becomes a werewolf (????).
Tumblr media
This one is just confusing.
Tumblr media
The white-spotted lanternfish or Rafinesque's lanternfish instead becomes...
Tumblr media
And most embarrassingly, the Mediterranean spiderfish gets saddled with something that "violates the tenet of good taste" (Holm, 1998).
Tumblr media
This then is the original source of "can-opener smoothdream". It was invented by an ichthyologist in 1990, and has seen little to no use outside of how bizarre the name is.
Tumblr media
Maybe McAllister's goofier names will catch on. Who knows? They certainly aren't very popular in the scientific community though.

9 Out-of-This-World Moments for Space Communications & Navigation in 2023
How do astronauts and spacecraft communicate with Earth?
By using relay satellites and giant antennas around the globe! These tools are crucial to NASA’s space communications networks: the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network, which bring back science and exploration data every day.
It’s been a great year for our space communications and navigation community, who work to maintain the networks and enhance NASA’s capabilities. Keep scrolling to learn more about our top nine moments.
Tumblr media
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, on the company's 29th commercial resupply services mission for the agency to the International Space Station. Liftoff was at 8:28 p.m. EST.
1. In November, we launched a laser communications payload, known as ILLUMA-T, to the International Space Station. Now, ILLUMA-T and the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) are exchanging data and officially complete NASA’s first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system. Laser communications can send more data at once than traditional radio wave systems – think upgrading from dial-up to fiber optic internet. ILLUMA-T and LCRD are chatting at 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). At that rate, you could download an average movie in under a minute.
Tumblr media
NASA’s InSight lander captured this selfie on Mars on April 24, 2022, the 1,211th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
2. Data analyzed in 2023 from NASA’s retired InSight Mars lander provided new details about how fast the Red Planet rotates and how much it wobbles. Scientists leveraged InSight’s advanced radio technology, upgrades to the Deep Space Network, and radio signals to determine that Mars’ spin rate is increasing, while making the most precise measurements ever of Mars’ rotation.
Tumblr media
TBIRD is demonstrating a direct-to-Earth laser communications link from low Earth orbit to a ground station on Earth.
3. We set a new high record! The TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) payload – also demonstrating laser communications like ILLUMA-T and LCRD – downlinked 4.8 terabytes of data at 200 Gbps in a single 5-minute pass. This is the highest data rate ever achieved by laser communications technology. To put it in perspective a single terabyte is the equivalent of about 500 hours of high-definition video.
Tumblr media
A 34-meter (112-foot) wide antenna at Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex near Canberra, Australia.
4. This year we celebrated the Deep Space Network’s 60th anniversary. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond. Learn more about the Deep Space Network’s legacy and future advancements.
Tumblr media
An illustration of the LunaNet architecture. LunaNet will bring internet-like services to the Moon.
5. We are bringing humans to the Moon with Artemis missions. During expeditions, astronauts exploring the surface are going to need internet-like capabilities to talk to mission control, understand their routes, and ensure overall safety. The space comm and nav group is working with international partners and commercial companies to develop LunaNet, and in 2023, the team released Draft LunaNet Specification Version 5, furthering development.
Tumblr media
The High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking node launched to the International Space Station in November and will act as a high-speed path for data.
6. In addition to laser communications, ILLUMA-T on the International Space Station is also demonstrating high-rate delay/disruption tolerant networking (HDTN). The networking node is showcasing a high-speed data path and a store-and-forward technique. HDTN ensures data reaches its final destination and isn’t lost on its path due to a disruption or delay, which are frequent in the space environment.
Tumblr media
The Communications Services Project (CSP) partners with commercial industry to provide networking options for future spaceflight missions.
7. The space comm and nav team is embracing the growing aerospace industry by partnering with commercial companies to provide multiple networking options for science and exploration missions. Throughout 2023, our commercialization groups engaged with over 110 companies through events, one-on-one meetings, forums, conferences, and more. Over the next decade, NASA plans to transition near-Earth services from government assets to commercial infrastructure.
Tumblr media
Middle and high school students solve a coding experiment during NASA's Office of STEM Engagement App Development Challenge.
8. Every year, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement sponsors the App Development Challenge, wherein middle and high school students must solve a coding challenge. This year, student groups coded an application to visualize the Moon’s South Pole region and display information for navigating the Moon’s surface. Our space communications and navigation experts judged and interviewed students about their projects and the top teams visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston!
Tumblr media
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket soars upward after liftoff at the pad at 3:27 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 26, from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in Florida carrying NASA’s SpaceX Crew-7 crew members to the International Space Station. Aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.
9. The Near Space Network supported 19 launches in 2023! Launches included Commercial Crew flights to the International Space Station, science mission launches like XRISM and the SuperBIT balloon, and many more. Once in orbit, these satellites use Near Space Network antennas and relays to send their critical data to Earth. In 2023, the Near Space Network provided over 10 million minutes of communications support to missions in space.
Here’s to another year connecting Earth and space.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

I remember the heat wave of 1980, there were even shirts made about it! It reached 107 in Waco that year, where I was in college. The heat waves got hotter from there. I remember one year in the mid 2000s, it was 112 in Austin.
And here's the thing that drives it home, though: it's gotten hotter every year in the eight years I've been here in California. We've had more days in the 90s in the last five years than before. And most days, the high temps are a good 5-10 hotter than they predict.

okay i went down a rabbit hole of names and here’s what i found out
each name is either from their birth year's top 100 in indiana, or their decade's general US top 200 for their decade if it's before 1960
Steve:
in the 60s, Steven (with a V not a PH!!) was #11 on the most popular baby names list in the US.
specifically in indiana in 1967 (1986-19 years old), it was #15
Steve’s parents would definitely be in the top most common names in my mind:
in the 40s, Richard was the #5 most popular name, so good job naming Steve’s dad ‘Dick’, everyone, it’s entirely possible.
looking at the 40s list’s top 10, Linda at #2 stood out most for Steve’s mom.
Eddie:
in the 60s, Edward was #29 on the most popular baby names list in the US, 'Eddie' by itself was #112, Edwin #155.
specifically in indiana in 1965 (1986-est. 21 years old), Edward was #42
There weren’t any other names that started with ‘Ed’ on the 1965 indiana list.
In my own personal headcanon though, with Eddie being short for Theodore, it’s a whole other story:
Theodore is #152 for the whole US in the 60s, and doesn’t appear in Indiana’s top 100 for 1965 BUT my headcanon is that his mom named him after her dad, who would’ve est. been born in the 20s. (Her in the 40s, Eddie in the 60s) and the name Theodore was #64 in the 20s.
the other Munsons:
Wayne was #49 on the 1930s list (taking into account Joel Stoffer’s age for this one, I’m thinking he’s Eddie’s dad’s older brother).
Albert was #47 on the 1940s list (i’m just assuming Al is short for Albert)
Eddie’s mom was harder, but when I thought about it, the first name that popped into my head for her was Margaret (#13, 1940s), but I think she’d go by Peggy, (#42, 1940s) which matches Wayne and Al’s location on the list.
the rest of the spicy six, indiana top 100, 1968 (seniors/est. 18 in ‘86):
Nancy: #47
Robin: #43 (actually surprised this was on the list!)
Jonathan (no really, this spelling specifically): #64
Argyle: not on the top 100 in California, or on the general 60s list
The Party, indiana top 100, 1971 (freshmen/est. 15 in ‘86)
Michael: #1
William: #10
Dustin: #103 for the US in the 70s, not on top 100 for indiana, 1971
Lucas: not on either US 70s or indiana 1971 list
Jane: not on either US 70s or indiana 1971 list
Maxine: not on either US 70s or indiana 1971 list
Erica (11 in ‘86, born 1975): #63 on top 100 for indiana, 1975
a few of the other adults i saw while doing this (general US 1940s list):
Joyce: #19
James: #1
Robert: #2
Karen: #16
Theodore: #98
Lonnie: #146 (again, was actually surprised this name was even on the list!)
