Mars Ravelo’s Darna: is it worth the wait?

The Filipino fantaserye series, Mars Ravelo’s Darna, starring Jane De Leon, has been running for two weeks now on various ABS-CBN services, which is enough time to justify an initial review. After roughly a decade stuck in development hell in various forms, the main question has to be: is the new Darna worth the wait..?

The show is based on the legendary komiks superheroine, Darna, created by writer Mars Ravelo and artist Nestor Redondo in May 1950. Darna was heavily inspired by Fawcett Comics’ Captain (Shazam) Marvel -- a young girl, Narda, finds a magic stone that transforms her into an adult superhero. She uses her new powers to fight against a range of supernatural foes, chief among them a power hungry medusa named Valentina.

This isn’t the first time Darna has been filmed. Since the 1950s there’s been a steady stream of movies, and three television series (well, two and a bit!) based on the character. The last was in 2009 on the GMA Network, after which the rights were sold to rival ABS-CBN who hoped to produce a new movie. But plans kept falling through, and when it looked like filming might actually begin with Jane De Leon in the title role, a worldwide pandemic struck! Thankfully ABS-CBN quickly retooled the project to become a television fantaserye, and filming finally began at the end of 2021.

Like other fantaserye shows, the series runs five nights a week (yes five!), Monday to Friday at 8pm. Fantaserye (or telefantasya) is similar to the South American telenovela genre -- like daytime soap opera except with a fixed episode count and a proper finale episode that ties up all plots. Shows typically run over many months, racking up dozens of episodes, sometimes well over one hundred.

Darma launched in mid-August, broadcast on cable channels in the Philippines and the USA, and accessible to worldwide audiences with English subtitles thanks to various streaming platforms. At the time of writing ten episodes have been broadcast over two weeks. What follows is an initial review of those episodes.

The premise

Narda Custodio (Jane De Leon) is a young woman with a passion for helping people, and a knack of finding herself in the middle of trouble. Narda is unaware that her mother, Leonor (Iza Calzado), hails from the planet Marte where she was once a legendary warrior named Darna who liberated Marte from invaders. Finding a quiet spot in the galaxy to settle down, Leonor has enjoyed a simple Filipino life, becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (paramedic) and mother to two children -- Narda and her brother Ding (Zaijian Jaranilla.) She still practices her martial arts skills every day, though, skills she insists her reluctant daughter must also learn.

As the show starts, some of Leonor/Darna’s old foes arrive on Earth and adopt human identities. They bring with them a weapon in the form of a giant robotic killing machine, forcing Leonor to once again use the alien stone that grants her the powers of Darna. Narda discovers her mother’s true identity, and realises the combat training has been to prepare her to become the next Darna. But Narda rejects her destiny, believing she is not a brave warrior like her mother. Instead she decides to follow her mother in a different way, as an EMT.

Unbeknown to all, the defeated robot’s power source has infected local people, mutating them in ways they can’t control. To make matters worse, there’s rampant corruption running throughout local politics and the police that may be linked to the hidden alien menace.

As events unfold, the reluctant Narda is increasingly forced to transform into Darna to save her town.

Narda is assisted by several friends, who remain unaware of her dual identity. Brian Robles (Joshua Garcia) is a young cop who fights against the corruption that he believes is the cause of his father’s murder. He quickly forms a bond with Narda that slowly blossoms into a romance. Regina Vanguardia (Janella Salvador) is a stylish young attorney from a rich and powerful family who wants to rid the town of all aliens -- including Darna. She has a crush on Officer Robles, and a jealous streak, making her a powerful ‘frenemy’ to Narda.

The tone

Mars Ravelo’s Darna mixes elements of telenovela melodrama, and superhero fantasy, and throws in a healthy dose of mystery for good measure. There are subplots and secrets galore. The seemingly kindhearted local Mayor is a ruthless tyrant. The town’s unassuming fast food stall owner has a home-made crime lab for investigating extraterrestrial activities. People are going missing, and the police are covering up the disappearances. The plots come thick and fast, and the pace is relentless.

This is important, because with five episodes a week to produce the lead superhero cannot appear in every episode. Fantaserye plays to a different beat to American tv fantasy, allowing the subplots and supporting characters to have a greater share of the screen time.

The show’s characters are a mixed bag of serious, comedic, and melodramatic. At one end of the scale are the two leads, Jane De Leon and Joshua Garcia, who deliver pretty straight dramatic performances. At the other end of the scale there’s the Greek Chorus of comic relief characters at the local cafe, who bicker and comment on every event.

Most characters fall into pretty well defined soap archetypes. There’s few shades of grey here -- the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and the audience can cheer or boo for whoever is on screen at any given moment.

The actors

As Narda, Jane De Leon proves particularly adept at handling the different demands of each storyline, be it action, romance, comedy, or tragedy. She works well with Joshua Garcia, sharing pretty good on-screen chemistry. Jane and Joshua’s performances are noticeably more natural and restrained than some of the other supporting characters. Janella Salvador, by contrast, gives viewers a true soap opera style performance as Regina, the rich and powerful daddy’s girl, playing the melodrama for all its worth and keeping the audience guessing as to if and when she’ll flip from Narda’s friend to her worst enemy.

There’s a massive cast of irregular characters who show up depending upon the demands of a given episode. Each of the main characters have their own subplots, and their own small cast of supporting characters. In many cases these supports are merely there to serve the needs of the main character, but some may provide bridges between the various parallel stories and Narda’s main plot.

The effects

Given that this is a superhero show, the obvious question is how special are the special effects? To paraphrase a line used to sell Christopher Reeve as Superman: “will we believe a woman can fly?”

On a Filipino tv budget, at five episodes a week, the effects -- unsurprisingly -- don’t quite live up to US tv standards. But that’s not to say that they are poor; far from it! Given the circumstances, it is actually quite incredible that the fights, stunts, and effects are as effective as they are.

Rather than scale back their ambitions, the team behind Darna have attempted some pretty exciting action sequences. Instead of aiming for perfect CGI like a US show might do, Darna just has fun with the tools at its disposal. It is as if the creators thought to themselves, “to hell with it, let’s just put as many thrills on screen as we can afford, and hope the audience is forgiving enough to excuse the few rough edges.”

Conclusion

Darna is like the bastard television love child of Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman and Joan Collins’ Dynasty! It smashes together classic old-school superhero hi-jinx with soap opera melodrama, and the results are a lot of fun.

The pacing may be a little odd if you’re used to mainstream American television, and the effects aren’t as polished as US tv, but the story lines have that essential soap quality of making you want to keep coming back for more. Jane De Leon offers up a warm and modest hero who is immediately relatable, and her supporting cast play their various sympathetic or villainous roles with such gusto that the show easily becomes a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Two weeks (ten episodes!) in, and already there’s enough intrigue and mystery to keep Scooby Doo and his chums occupied for years. Yet Narda has barely started on her hero’s journey to become the new Darna. Here’s hoping the series as a whole delivers on its promising start.

In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint. Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.

“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu. And while the deal saw a number of other channels were dropped in the deal, the dropping of Freeform suggests that, as the repercussions of the deal are felt across the pay TV ecosystem, no channel is truly safe. Freeform has a long and winding history that traces back to the earliest days of cable TV. Founded in 1977 by the evangelist Pat Robertson as a spinoff of his Christian Broadcasting Network local TV stations, the channel effectively became “the first satellite basic cable network in America,” Robertson recalled to the Archive of American Television in an interview. HBO was founded a half decade earlier as a premium cable service, and Ted Turner put WTCG’s signal on cable and satellite beginning in 1976, but Robertson’s CBN service was the original basic cable channel.

[...] But the channel that would become Freeform would be bought and sold many times over in the enduing decades, with many brand iterations to boot. In the late 1980s, the channel left Robertson’s ministry and became for-profit, rebranding itself as The Family Channel (the deal was financed, in part, by the cable TV mogul John Malone, who, in a twist of fate, is also the largest outside shareholder in Charter Communications). In 1997, the channel was sold for $1.9 billion to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. and a company controlled by media mogul Haim Saban, and it was rebranded as the Fox Family Channel. Just a few years later, with Saban seeking an exit, the companies agreed to sell Fox Family to The Walt Disney Co. for $2.9 billion plus the assumption of its debt. Fox Family was renamed ABC Family, with the company trying out a number of brands, identities and target audiences before settling on Freeform and its current target audience in 2016. Despite its many names and iterations over the years, Freeform still has one critical connection to its founding: It still runs The 700 Club, the religious show hosted by Robertson for most of its run, a term of that original sale decades ago that still holds to this day.

With Spectrum dropping Freeform as part of the new carriage agreement with Disney and their networks, could this be the beginning of end of the road for the channel?

Their Halloween and Christmas blocks will see ratings erosions due to this move.

How Naira fell, economy bled under Emefiele - Idimogu

Hails Tinubu" suspension, investigation of Emefiele Honourable Jude Idimogu, a former Lawmaker representing Oshodi/ Isolo Constituency īII in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has hailed the suspension of Mr Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Bola Tinubu. Idimogu told newsmen on Monday in Lagos that Tinubu displayed courage and determination in taking the decision in the interest of Nigeria's future. According to him, the continued retention of Emefiele in the CBN would jeopardize the fortunes of the economy, making the nation's legal tender, the Naira a laughing stock among currencies in the world. The former lawmaker said that under Emefiele's watch as CBN governor, Nigeria ran multiple exchange rate regime, where friends, family members and cronies of the suspended governor gut foreign exchange from the CBN official FX window at N465/$ and sold same at the parallel market rate of N750/$, making excess gain. He noted that the former CBN governor, literally hijacked the legitimate duties of Bureaux Des Change (BDC) operators in the country and used officials of Deposit Money Banks(DMBs) to sell foreign exchange to their agents, and then to the general public. He said that over 10,000 jobs were put on hold in the BDC subsector when he suspended the weekly intervention of FX to the BDC retail market He said that the BDCs had collaborated with the CBN in ensuring exchange rate stability at the onset of the governor' first tenure in office. He said, however, the battle for power, which consumed Emefiele made him shut his doors to the BDCs and he operated the FX market like a private empire. "Emefiele is conniving with the MDs of banks allocating dollars of foreign exchange to his chronics, they need to be investigated. "No wonder that the BDC operators were complaining that Emefiele took their business in the pretense that there is not enough dollars. "He channeled those FX activities to the bankers because he was was an MD of Zenith bank, with the aim of patronizing his colleagues colleagues who are in turn doing round tripping. "He facilitates FX to them, moving the money to them to make excess profits.. " The economy's not doing well. but the banks are every year, every month, every quarterly are producing fantastic profit reports. "How are they'rmaking their money when the economy is not benefitting . "All the excess profits the banks are boasting, where are they coming from?. " I must tell you they are coming from exchange rate differentials," Idimogu said He urged Tinubu to do the needful by investigating all other actors, ministers that served under Buhari that has contributed to the downfall of the economy. "They should be arrested and made to give account of their stewardship. Idimogu said that over the eight years of Emefiele's stewardship, the monetary policy decisions undertaken under his watch was never in favour of the business environment in the country with attendant high interest rates and high inflation rates in the country. He said that Emefiele neglected his exalted office as high priest at the temple of the apex bank to purchase form to context the presidency of Nigeria without recourse to his resignation as the governor and hight priest in the temple of the apex bank. On the Naira redesign policy, the former lawmaker said that Emefiele threw the nation into financial crisis without any apologies. "He said he has no apologies to Nigerians and now nothing has changed, what a wicked man." "it's high time we build this country together with Mr. President. "We cannot continue like this. That is why we are having the Japa syndrome, our youths are traveling out of this country, running away. "But the truth is that there is no place like home, "Why do you want them to stay when there is no job for them when people like Emefele and co are busy spending our money, destroying the economy," Idimogu said. He appealed to Tinubu to restore the country to prosperity and progress. "Remember what you told us the very first time you declared your intention to rule this nation. " You said that your lifelong heart desire is to be the president of this nation. "And God has helped you ; today you are the president of this great nation. " Nigerians are counting on you. He served as head of Regent University and of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). Robertson's career spanned over five decades, and was the founder of several organizations, including CBN, Regent University, Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation, the International Family Entertainment Inc. (ABC Family Channel/Freeform), the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ), the Founders Inn and Conference Center, and the Christian Coalition. Iran-Contra and the Religious Right

Oliver North worshipped in a charismatic Episcopal Church in Virginia called Church of the Apostles. It turn out to be one of those Shepherding churches, a cult movement within the charismatic movement. North’s pastor was Rev. Brian Cox, a National Coordinator of Sharing of Ministries Abroad (SOMA), a right-wing political orgainization in guise of of an active missionary work in South America. Their agenda was to fight communism in South America.

In 1976, Jesus freaks from Gospel Outreach of California came to Guatemala after its earthquake. They did not waste time aiding earthquake victims, they were trying to convert Catholics to Pentecostals. One early convert was Rios Montt,who became leader of Gospel Outreach Verbo Church. He smuggled Bibles into Nicaruagua after Sandisitas took over the country.

Christian Emergency Relief Teams (CERT) started in Carlsbad, California in 1974 to aid Honduras hurricane victims, but after Sandistas took over Nicaruagua, they switched to aiding the contras. They have even accompanied contras to battle. Templo Biblico in San Jose, California was a front for Full Gospel Businessman International and World Vision. It became a CIA conduit to contras in Costa Rico.

Glendale, California based Transworld Mission (TWM), headed by John Olson .When Somoza was head of Nicaragua, Olson produced rabid anti-communist radio broadcasts in US, supporting Somoza. He became friends with Oliver North.

When Oliver North became an officer, he joined Officers’ Christian fellowship, founded by Ret. Army Major Gen. Clay T. Buckingham on 170 US bases. it was a shepherding organization.

1979-83-NCPAC Financial Director Carl “Spitz” Channel formed a coalition of religious right wing organizations to raise funds for contras. Lutheran pastor Rchard Nieuhaus influenced IRD in 1981 to supporting contras.

In 1982- Charles Moser, Secretary-Treasuru of Free Congress and Education Foundation, formed a committee to support the contras. This committee had Enrique Ruedo of Free Congress, Dan Tefferman of Freedom Leadership Foundation, Reed Irvine of AIM, and Lynn Francis Bouchery of Council for Inter-American Security. Jimmy Hasan, Director of Campus Crusade in Nicaragua 1982-85, was working for the contras.

By 1984, the most prominent private donor to contras was CBN. Capt. Robert Warren, retired Navy counterinsurgency specialist, was head of Operation Blessing. He was also formerly of Operation Phoenix, the CIA assassination group in Vietnam. North, Secord, and Poindexter were also in Operation Phoenix. They had ties to John Singlaub, head of World Anti-communist League (WACL) and a former member of NSC. He was a coordinator for private aid to the contras. North went around US trying to get aid for contras and build domestic propaganda for the contras. CBN contributed $3 million to Nicaraguan Patriotic Association. Its president was Juan Sacasa, Houston representative for the contras. Harry Aderholt, the Air Force officer who pioneered Operation Phoenix, headed the Air Commandos Association( the Air Force Green Berets) and was supplying the Salvadoran Army against its rebels. Aderholt, with Warren and Operation Blessing opened a clinic in Nebay region in Guatemala that turned out to be a de facto concentration camp for the Indians.

Dr. Alton Ochsner,Jr. convinced Moral Majority to the contras cause. They started “Family Forum” in San Francisco, an organization to support contras. They formed Friends of America (FOA) in 1984. Ochsner became head of Carribean Commission, a contra support group. He introduced Jenkins to Council for National Policy, which was supporting the contras. Ochsner father was a well-known white supremicist. FOA supplies were flown by the National Guard of Mississippi and Louisana at taxpayers’ expense and illegal activity.

In Sept.,1985, Robertson asked Reagan on the 700 Club, who was the person going to Tehran to talk about hostages. Reagan admitted sending someone to Tehran to trade hostages for arms. That “someone” was Oliver North. He was accompanied by Robert Marrow, an CIA agent allegedly on the plot to kill JFK, and was part of Operation Phoenix and in Operation Blessing. Jimmy Hasan was arrested by Sandistas after an IRD meeting on Oct. 31, 1985. He fled and appeared on the 700 Club. He recieved money from North’s NSC safe. North introduced Derstine to Calero and Bermudez in a secret map room. Rev. Derstine was a televangelist. Calero and Bermudez are contra leaders. FOA leaders generate public support and coordinate private aid from US church groups for contras, though that was illegal at the time.Woody Jenkins went around claiming Sandistas were dictators.

In 1986, FOA used Kelly Air Force Base and airlifted at taxpayers’ expense 100,00 pounds of supplies to Honduras for the contras. The planes were accompanied by National Guards of Mississippi and Louisana. FOA also supplied SETCO, an CIA airline for the contras. Operation Blessing supplied gas and drove vehicles for the contras. CERT accompanied contras to their battles.

David Cousas and Oliver North spoke at National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) to get support for the contras. 1985-John Olson was Oliver North’s guest at the White House for a briefing on the contra war. Olson was there on behalf of NRB. NRB became staunch advocate of direct US military intervention against Nicaragua. Before the Hausenfus crash, Robertson knew about the contras were being supplied by Israel and South Africa. This was before the press found out. AFC Richard Viguerie lobbied for the contras in Congress and claimed North was innocent. Singlaub and Micharl Clifford (Robertson’s CBN staff member) were among AFC members. North was keynote speaker for Bev LeHayes’ Concerned Women of America (CWA), urging them to aid the contras. Barbara Abbey, CWA,co-sponsored a fund-raiser for contra leader Calero. CWA sponsored a contra refugee camp in Costa Rico. CWA got money from Pepsico, Levi, Avon,Amex, Subaru, Sun Co., United Bank of Colorado, and Government Employees Insurance.

Jose Gonzales Souza started Semilla (“Seed”) at the Chesepeake, Va, office of Pat Robertson’s National Perspective Institute. Souza was a graduate of Robertson’s Regent University and lead its Hispanic Studies.CBN gave him money to start Semilla to train and organize Christian leaders in the Western Hemisphere, especially in Latin America.S emilla got $1,714.34 from Spitz Channell’s National Endowment for Preservation of Liberty (NEPL), part of Oliver North’s multifaceted procontra propaganda project.

Robert Reilly, Reagan’s liason to the Catholics, denounced liberation theology. He worked with former Maryknoll worker Geraldine O’Leary Macras (who worked for Costa Rican contras). He also worked with Humberto Belli, former editor of La Prensa. Humberto Belli started Puebla Instiute in Michigan in co-operation with Sword of Spirit (Catholic charismatic group) and Ciudad de Dios (“City of God”), the Hispanic version of Sword of Spirit. Belli claimed there was religious persecution in Nicaragua. CIA paid Belli to do a film called Nicaragua Christians under Fire. Belli was advisor to pro-contra Archbishop Bravo. He had Bravo doing mass for contras in Miami. Archbishop Bravo had ties with W.R. Grace Corporation. He also got funds from North. Robert Pickus and George Weigel formed National Endowment for Democracy (NED), spending millions of taxpayers’ money funding Nicaragua’s opposition press. Weigel served as advisor for USIA. Pickus formed World without War Council (WWWC), which promoted US tour of Belli and contra leader Arturo Cruz.

1987- Bev Lehaye met Violetta Chamarro, editor of La Prensa, pledging support for the contras. Rev Geoff Donnan of Carribean Christian Ministries organized anti-Sandistas clergy in Nicaragua using private Christian schools there. Donnan worked under sponsorship of Paul lindstrom, a John Birch organizer.

1986- Donnan declared liberation theology as Satanic. He planned to publish a “Christian ” history of Nicaragua, written by Belli. Contra leader Joseph Douglas joined CERT. A few days before Swaggert resigned, he went to Nicaragua and saw the children victims of contra attacks. He withdrew his support of the contras and criticized them for their inhumanity. Suddenly, Marvin Gorman came up with pictures of Swaggert with a prostitute. Meanwhile, the contras smuggled illegal drugs into the US.

Politics make strange bedfellows. This proves it! In 1961, after a military coup of a democratic government in South Korea that brought Park to power, KCIA decided to organize and utilize a church called Unification Church, as a political tool of the right wing military government. They wanted to export this church to the US. They asked Rev. Bill Bright to help organize it and chose a leader of it. Bill Bright choose Rev. Sun Myung Moon to head it. Moon had been a friend of Bright for a long time. Numerious Moonies served as aids to various Congresspersons since then.

In 1977, Richard Viguerie got a contract for “Children’s Relief Fund”, sponsored by the Moonies’ Korean Culture and Freedom Foundation. Less than 6.3% of the donations went to the needy, the rest went to Viguerie’s pockets and the Moonies. The biggest chunk went to Viguerie.

In 1986, Moonies paid Viguerie to handle the distribution of their magazine Insight.

In 1975, Christian Freedom Foundation founded by Bill Bright, Richard Viguerie, Richard Devos, Arthur DeMoss, Rep. John Conlan, Ed McAteer. The money came from Moonies.

In 1983, American Coalition for Traditional Values (ACTV) began with Tim LaHaye, Falwell, Robertson, Bakker, Robison, Humbard, and Swaggert. The money that started it came from the Moonies. It was right after Gary Jarmin, ex-Moonie, introduced Tim LaHaye to Col. Bo Pak, Rev. Moon’s right hand man.

1984-Rev. Moon was arrested for his illegal business activities. Moonies formed Coalition for Religious Freedom (CRF), a front for defense of Rev. Moon. LaHaye, Falwell< Ben Armstrong, Robison, Humbard, James Kennedy, and Swaggert were on the executive board. Paul Crouch and Hal Lindsey joined in 1986.

Ron Goodwin, a top Falwell aid left the Moral Majority to work on Insight in 1985.

1987-Col. Pak paid 10.06 million dollars for Vigueries’ offices. Christian Voice was in Moonies pay and headed by Gary Jarmin. Pres. Robert Grant and the Christian Voice joined the Moonies to form American Freedom Coalition.

1988-Grant made ties with Anti-Bolshevik Bloc of Nations. It was a group made up of Who’s Who of WWII Nazis.

Coaliton on Revival (COR) was founded by Dennis Peacocke, a Bob Mumford disciple, and Jay Grimstead, an ex-Moonie. The money came from Moonies.

Mumford promoted dominion theology (Reconstructionism). Gary North of COR was a member of the John Birch Society.

The neo-Nazi church Identity’s rock group Legacy had entertained COR’s meetings and parties.

1985-While “Father” Dowling was passing off as a Catholic priest, he spoke at Grace Lutheran Chruch in El Cerrito, CA. Its pastor, Ralph Moelling, was a member of the Moonies’ CAUSA. Dowling served as national advisory board on CAUSA, which was paying Dowling’s travel expenses. Dowling frequently met Pat Buchanan at the White House and Bretton Sciaroni, a confident of John Singlaub. Dowling kept close ties with Linda Guell, director of Western Goals, which was involved in North’s contra fundraising. It was also a John Birch front.

1987-Christian Emergency Relief Teams(CERT) recieved a large amount of money from the Moonies.

1986-Moonies received money from South Africa, $45million, in exchange for South Africa’s interest in Washington Times, the Moonie paper.

1982-James Whelan, editor of Moonie-owned Sacramento Union, went to the Washington Times. Back in 1961, he was part of a secret UPI team in Miami that covered the failed US invasion of Cuba. He was PR man for ITT, when it helped CIA overthrow Allende and set up Pinochet. Whelan resigned the Washington Times in 1984, and worked briefly for CBN.

Reed Irvine wrote for Moonie-owned papers. Richard Zone was also with Christian Voice. Grant had ties with Anita Bryant, an anti-gay crusade. Tim LaHaye, Bob Billings, and Cal Thomas, an ex-Moonie, was with the Christian Voice. Billings and Thomas was also with Moral Majority.

Shepherding

In 1965,in South Korea, Paul Yonggi Cho started a sysytem called Shepherding. He was inspired by the organizational methods of Rev. Moon. He wrote the book Successful Home Cell Groups in 1981, based on his ideas of shepherding.

1970-Argentina. An Assembly of God pastor, Rev. Juan Carlos Ortiz, established a new church, Body of Christ. It had a highly structured authority from small cells led by a “shepherd”, who was in turn led by another shepherd and so on in a pyramid form of command. It was from reading about what Cho was doing.

1972- Rev. Bob Mumford visited Ortiz’s church and was impressed. He brought Shepherding to America. He was a Bible teacher in Ft. Lauderdale,Florida.. Mumford,with four other associates, moved to Mobile, Alabama, directing the Christian Growth Ministries. They saw in the Charimatic Movement too much chaos. Shepherding would bring discipline.

Most leaders of the Shepherding Movement required their members to disclose intimate details of their lives and submit to the Shepherd (no female was allowed to be a Shepherd).The shepherd directed all facets of their followers’ lives.

Pat Robertson denounced the Shepherding Movement, but he invited Don Basham, one of the Shepherd leaders, to the 700 Club in 1987.

They have a magazine called New Wine. Cult Awareness Network declared they are a cult.

Mumford promoted dominion theology or Reconstrutionism, which was trying to get theocracy in America.Rev. Peacocke was one of Mumford’s disciples and his Coalition on Revival (COR) promoted Reconstructionism.

Robertson and the New World Order

A few years back, Robertson wrote a book called New World Order, his take on the Conpiracy Theory. He said that secret organizations are working together to make a one world government. This government will try to eliminate Christianity. He mentioned the illuminati, the Bavarian group started in 1776 by Adam Weishuapt and was disbanded in 1787. Robertson is one of those who believed Illuminati never disbanded, but behind the scenes of worldly events.

He said the Warburgs, Rockefellers, and Morgans created te Federal reserve Board and the IRS. They were out to change the Constitution. House, an employee of Rothchilds, started Council for Foreign Relations and talked Wilson into participating in WWI. House helped formed League of Nations. Adolf Hitler was trained by occult groups, so said Pat Robertson. The British Labour Party socialized Britain after WWII. Sweden became socialized. Robertson said that Ford Foundation wants US to merge with the USSR.

CFR infiltrated our government and the Federal Reserve Board. Also the Foundations (Ford,Rockefeller, Carnegie,etc.), our banks, our universities, and our newspapers.Marxism is its goal.Helped Communism to take control of Russia, China, East Europe, Central America, and Africa. Some are motivatied by Satan, so claimed Robertson.CIA under CFR control.

Then, Robertson turned to Trilateral Commission, formed to link Japan, US, and Europe.Robertson mentioned International Finance ( a buzz word for Jews) as backing US Communist Party.

Robertson said Communism was brainchild of German Jewish Intellectuals.

Robertson talked about Great Seal of US. He said the eye above the Pyramid is Eye of Osiris ( actually its Eye of Horus). A select few was planning to to replace Christian order, said Pat Robertson.

Robertson talked about roots of Communism were in the Illuminati. They staged the French Revolution. He mentioned Moses Hess, a radical Jewish rabbi, who influenced Engels. Robertson said Hess was an Illuminatus. He went on and mentioned Nesta Webster. who is a favorite author of John Birch Society and a member of British Fascist Society.

Robertson claimed Solidarity was a front for the Communist Party.

John Ruskin and his pupil, Cecil Rhodes. With Rothschild funding, Cecil Rhodes founded DeBeers. He created Rhodes Scholarship. Rhodes created British Roundtable.

Robertson mentioned Club of Rome as one of those groups working for one world government. He mentioned John Dewey teaching ethics different from JudeoChristian. New Age movement is a front for this One World conspiracy. He claimed the first Masonic legislator was Buddha. Illuminati borrowed from Jewish Cabala.

Rockefeller funded Planned Parenthood’s start. Robertson claimed that Muslems, Hindus, and Buddhists would undermine US.

Robertson claimed Lincoln was killed because he did not US government to loan from banks. Robertson said European Bankers(Jews) and money lords of US had Booth kill Lincoln. Booth was in employ of European bankers.

Robertson stole so much from John Birch literature and Nesta Webster works, its a wonder he wasn’t sued for plagiarism. Robertson claimed occult came from Babylon and Egypt. Other times he said the occult came from China and India. He can’t seem to make up his mind. Historian Will Durant debunks the idea that Illuminati was connected to French Revolution. Many historians since then also debunk that idea. Robertson liked the old idea that only property owners could vote. That was a rule to prevent blacks and other minorities from voting, also keeping the poor from voting.

Well, in Robertson’s view, the Protocols of Learned Elders of Zion was real, that old Anti-Semitic forgery. I find this book both racist and contradictory. He is close to Mussolini here, with some borrowed ideas from Adolf Hitler, who was a believer in the Protocols, too.

Great American Family CEO Bill Abbott is reflecting on the network’s success — and why most audiences are looking for something “quite different” than what Hollywood is giving them.

“It’s been a great journey,” Abbott told CBN. “And we’ve had a lot of success so far.”

GAF has been named one of the fastest-growing cable channels and recently merged with the streaming platform Pure Flix, now called Great American Pure Flix.

Great American Family has reached a new ratings milestone — it’s now the fastest-growing network among viewers, and continues to hold its spot as the fastest-growing network on TV.

Nielsen Media Research reported that Great American Family finished the second quarter of 2023 as the “Fastest-growing network on TV in Total Day Women 25-54 (+83%), Households (+214%) and Total Viewers (+216%); and Primetime Households (+178%) and Total Viewers (+167%).”

The network also continues to be the fastest-growing network on TV in Total Day Households (+161%) and Total Viewers (+158%), as well as Primetime Households (+149%) and Total Viewers (+145%).

This is Great American Family’s eighth-consecutive month as the fastest-growing network “year-over-year in Total Day Household ratings.”

The content offered by Great American Media is family-friendly and moral, something many have noticed is missing from standard Hollywood fare.

When asked why larger networks have overlooked this audience for so long, Abbott answered, “Because, quite frankly, the coastal elites have a different sensibility. What is rewarded in Hollywood is being shocking and…pushing the envelope as far as possible.”

“I think the majority of the country is looking for something quite different,” he continued. “And you look at the awards show ratings, for example, and how far down they have been over the years, and it’s because they’ve totally gone off the rails in terms of what the offering is, and it’s out of touch with the sensibility of the majority of the country.”

Abbott discussed the audience Great American Media serves in a previous interview with Variety.

“We want to attract as many people who are underserved, and feel like faith and family is important to them,” he explained. “It’s about telling great stories that inspire, and that people can watch together with their families and will watch together as part of their faith communities or join a book club or do anything that really is considered to be in that faith-and-family genre.”

One of the biggest components of GAF’s content calendar is its Christmas programming.

“It’s comfort food,” Abbott told Fox News. “It’s the type of content that stands the test of time because you may know what’s going to happen, but it’s how you get there. It’s the journey that makes it interesting and makes it fun.”

Starra: another rare heroine finally turns up after 20 years

Starra was a one-shot episode of Filipino anthology tv show, Wansapanataym, broadcast back in 2002. The long-running show was (and still is) a feel-good mix of fantasy and fairy tales aimed at a family audience, featuring a diverse range of stories told across a variety of genres -- including superheroes. The episode in question, Starra, showcased Claudine Barretto as Rosario, a young woman who -- when danger appears -- has the ability to transform into the titular superheroine.

Although some grainy screen shots have been available online for a while (rescued, thanks to the internet archive, from an early 2000s web forum post), the full episode itself has been missing for 20 years -- until now. Jeepney TV, a digital channel owned by Pinoy broadcaster ABS-CBN (who are planning to screen the new Darna tv show later this year) have finally uploaded the full episode to their YouTube channel, free to watch.

The 20 year old episode is a enjoyable, if only for the laughably bad special effects, created on a woefully limited budget in an age when CGI was still beyond the reach of most cheap television. Even without being able to understand the single word of dialogue, the heady mix of serious drama and pantomime-style silliness is endearing, and Barretto is clearly giving it her all as a superheroine, even if her costume is more camp than crimefighter.

SkyCable to End Cable Service and transitions to Fiber-Optic Internet Provider with the acquisition of PLDT [#K5NewsFMExclusive] (updated as final!!!)

QUEZON, MANILA -- Cable Pay-TV operator and Fiber-Optic internet service provider SkyCable Corporation had sadly announced on Thursday morning (January 18th, 2024 – Manila local time), per the acquisition of Philippine Long Distance Telephone company (PLDT) will go bid farewell to its cable TV service nationwide on Tuesday (February 27th, 2024 at 12:00mn). The said cable TV service will transition into a purely fiber-optic internet service provider, and it will cease its pay TV operations on that said date.

For those you don’t know… SkyCable Corporation (a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation), the Philippine’s largest media conglomerate in the country, has been a key player in the cable pay-TV industry since its establishment in June 1990 as Central CATV Inc. and later rebranded as SkyCable in late-January 1992. Over the years, it has provided millions of Filipino households have tuned in, with access to international content, live events and world news. However, in response to evolving consumer demands and technological advancements, SkyCable is embracing a new era of connectivity for the early millennium of generations.

While SkyFiber, the fiber-optic internet service offered by SkyCable (now-defunct for its internet broadband service in the late-February 2021), will continue to thrive and cater to the growing needs of subscribers. With its unlimited, high-speed internet plans ranging from 4 MBPS to 100 MBPS (as previously stated in former internet pricing plans from Manila Bulletin), SkyFiber ensures seamless browsing, streaming, online activities and even an online class for students. Subscribers can also enjoy complimentary access to Sky On-Demand, an online video streaming platform featuring a wide array of Kapamilya Channel shows and movies (formerly as the ABS-CBN network). SkyFiber also has cable TV bundled plans that include HD channels and premium content.

SkyCable and SkyFiber are among the leading national providers of cable TV and fiber-optic internet in the Philippines, serving millions of subscribers in Metro Manila and other key cities, including right here in Central Visayas. They aim to deliver cost-efficient and seamless connectivity to their Filipino customers.

At the time of the announcement, the last cable bill on SkyCable for February 2024 is currently in development by next month and it needs to be settled for one last time with a total amount (which yet to-be-ceased cable pay-TV operations), but SkyFiber service will not be impacted, when it enters into a sale and purchase agreement to acquire 100% of SkyCable Corporation from Sky Vision Corporation, ABS-CBN Corporation and Lopez Inc. for PHP6.75B (nearly U$D120.8 million). Cable pay-TV subscribers of SkyCable suggests to the public is to switch ‘Cignal TV’ or any local cable pay-TV operator like 'FilProducts CATV’.

The last new advisory stated in part: “For more than 3 decades, SkyCable has served as the Filipino family’s window to the world, bringing sought-after international content, live events, world news and more. Throughout the years, you have been with us – entertained, informed and evolving with the shows and programs that we brought to your screens. We are truly grateful to you for making SkyCable a part of your home. As a token of gratitude for many years of patronage, we are opening up a selection of SKYcable channels for you and your family to enjoy until February 26, 2024 at no additional cost. Then, on the same date at 11:59pm, SkyCable will sign off and cease airing. We hope that SKYcable leaves you with great memories. Together, let’s welcome a brighter SKY ahead!”.

To ensure a seamless transition, SkyCable subscribers are not required to return their assigned Sky Digibox and other cable accessories to them after SkyCable ceases airing. Moreover, subscribers in selected areas in Metro Manila and other key cities or regions can enjoy a sneak preview of Cignal’s channel line-up at no extra cost from February 27th, 2024 to March 27th, 2024, by utilizing their existing SKY Digibox.

SkyFiber subscribers will continue to enjoy their fiber-optic internet service, saying that their plans remain separate from PLDT. SkyCable has 700,000 subscribers, controlling 45% of the cable market.

Our news team attempts in-person on our interview last Friday morning (January 26th, 2024), with the regional office of SkyCable, located within the premises of CityMall in North National Highway, Brgy. Daro, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. However, they declined to provide any comment.

Conversely, FilProducts Service Television Inc. (FPSTVi) situated in North National Highway, Brgy. Bantayan, within the same city and province, as well as POS Digital: Cignal TV Regional Office located in Dr. Vicente Locsin Street, Brgy. 3, also within Dumaguete City, the said province, have both exclusively shared their insights with K5 News FM and OneNETnews. In light of this, cable TV consumers are advised to consider switching to alternative cable providers like 'FilProducts' or 'Cignal TV' on or before February 27th, 2024.

For the services of FilProducts Service Television Inc. (FPSTVi) between the Cable and Fiber Internet, a customer service representative named Ms. Flora revealed that the new subscribers of 'FilProducts' can avail the cable internet connections under the 'FilFiber' service. The plans range from PHP999 (roughly U$D18) for 25MBPS to PHP2,499 (nearly U$D45) for 200MBPS, with varying prices depending on the chosen plan.

Aside the former SkyCable subscribers, who were previously subscribed to SkyFiber or Converge, they can also avail of fiber-optic internet plans through 'FilFiber'. These plans may include cable internet and television services, as per exclusively advertised and featured on local FM and AM radio stations between DYGB-FM 91.7mhz's Power91FM and DYWC-AM 801khz's Radyo Bandilyo, which are the only media partners of FilProducts. The company also offers TeleRadyo Serbisyo (formerly DZMM TeleRadyo) for the latest national news, information and music on weekends at night in the Philippines. The local cable channel is available on Channel 50 in Negros Oriental, under the affiliated cable operator members of the Philippine Cable and Telecommunications Association (PCTA).

Ms. Flora emphasizes the availability of FilFiber's unlimited internet and the 100+ channels offered by their local cable service in Dumaguete City. Additionally, viewers can enjoy additional HD channels, including the highly popular Kapamilya Channel (formerly ABS-CBN), which is available in high-definition (HD) on their platform.

Meanwhile, a branch employee for POS Digital: Cignal TV regional office and the local encoder of PLDT-Negros Oriental chapter named Mr. Brian explained that the Cignal TV is now offered along with internet services by PLDT for 'SkyFiber'. He mentioned in a separate interview that SkyCable may have merged with Philippine Long Distance Telephone company, and this merger could bring some benefits. PLDT has a strong internet connection for 'SkyFiber', and SkyCable alone had good cable service.

"Subalit yun dito sa PLDT kasi, yung una na internet lang siya alone. So ngayon, meron siyang bago ngayon ng 'Cignal'. Yung dati, meron nato doon sa 'Cignal' pero nawala yun. Ang nangyari yung sa 'SkyCable', nag mi-merge na siguro sa PLDT. Bali yung 'SkyCable', nag o-offer nila, hindi lang naman sa internet tsaka sa kable ng telebisyon din. Kung sakali na mag ano sila Sir Rhayniel, mag-merge sila medyo may kagandahan na siguro. Kasi yun sa internet, malakas naman ang PLDT. Tapos yung sa Cable din, maganda yung kable na 'SkyCable' nila", Brian said in an exclusive interview in Tagalog dialect.

In terms of cable plans available in Negros Oriental, Cignal TV offers a range of options. The plans start at Plan 290 (or over U$D5), which includes 90+ channels and go up to Plan 1,650 (approximately U$D30), offering more than 120+ channels. Both local and national networks are included. When asked about favorite channels for TeleRadyo Serbisyo and Kapamilya Channel, Mr. Brian mentioned that Home Box Office (HBO), Global Media Arts (GMA) 7, and the defunct Alto Broadcasting System - Chronicle Broadcasting Network or ABS-CBN (now Kapamilya Channel) are available on Cignal TV. However, when it comes to TeleRadyo Serbisyo, Mr. Brian mentioned that it is not available on Cignal TV at the moment.

In closing, Mr. Brian assured that the transition from SkyCable to Cignal TV should not be a public cause for concern. PLDT, which has merged with SkyCable, is capable of providing excellent internet services, while Cignal TV is a reliable cable provider: "Kung 'Cignal' po, medyo nahihirapan kasi, 'SkyCable' sila tapos mawawala na po sila, nag mi-merge na silang PLDT. Siguro si PLDT, okay lang man. Si PLDT ngayon sa mga subscriber ng 'SkyCable'. Hindi naman silang masyadong lugi dun, kasi si PLDT na magpo-provide talaga siya ng best sa internet, tapos meron naman ngayon sa 'Cignal'. So bale, no worries po ang mga subscriber dahil, maganda na yun ang PLDT", he added. Brian emphasized that the subscribers have no need to worry as PLDT will ensure a smooth transition nationwide.

In response to concerns about the internet coverage as K5 News FM and OneNETnews have learned on both interviews, Mr. Brian highlighted that the PLDT has multiple upstream sites in Negros Oriental and continues to expand its coverage to reach areas that previously had limited internet access in most municipalities: "Working naman si PLDT, meron tayong maraming sites na naka-upstreams, yung mga lugar na hindi masyadong mapuntahan, noon ang mga internet pa, pinupuntahan na ng PLDT na sa mga linya para doon", he concluded.

With this on both sides, Flora and Brian encourage the affected SkyCable subscribers, to consider permanently switching either FilProducts or Cignal.

PLDT will officially integrate SkyFiber’s fiber-optic subscribers, while the cable TV segment on SkyCable will be absorbed automatically by Cignal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MediaQuest Holdings under the PLDT group.

In the end as final, SkyCable’s decision to focus on fiber-optic internet services reflects a commitment to delivering cost-efficient and seamless connectivity to Filipino households. With its rich history and extensive reach, SkyCable remains a key player in shaping the future of the digital landscape in our own country.
