Because @evelhak said she'd be interested in hearing Dutch parodies and funny folk songs, I will hereby share some of our funny music. First up, we have some classics of musical parodies in Dutch.
youtube
This is a lyric video to a famous Dutch parody on Basshunter's Boten Anna. It's very nostalgic to me because of how it is low-key jumpstyle and that was such a dance craze when I was growing up.
youtube
The aforementioned parody that reframes the Dutch love song, 'Ademloos' (breathless) to be about a frustrated mistress who is fed up with her lover and just wants him to go back to his wife. Waardeloos means worthless, and throughout the song they roast him including an entire bridge just comprised of words ending with 'loos' such as hopeloos (hopeless) and smakeloos (tasteless). I am willing to bet my money Izuki Shun from KNB and Joco from Shaman King would appreciate this bridge. It is sung by three Dutch drag queens, which gives this song a layer of gay to. (I wanted to share the video to a more recent parody that got quite big, which is Ponkers doing Justin Bieber's Sorry but it is age restricted. IDK why, perhaps it is the Justin persona having sung about accidentally killing Selena's Gomez cat that he pretends to bury at the beach and touching on the disturbing cut 4 Bieber thing). Some funny Dutch folk songs:
youtube
The aforementioned song about the woman who loses her panties at the pub which she suspects to be stolen by the owner and she laments how cold her ass is. (Cor is Toos' husband who plays the accordion, before anyone wonders wtf the dude is as only the woman sings) (also, considering the name appeared twice, to anyone wondering how to pronounce 'Toos', it is like 'Toast' but without the t at the end)
youtube
Sung by Connie Schouman, this is 'Een Beetje Geld Voor Een Beetje Liefde' meaning 'A Little Bit of Money For A Little Bit Of Love'. This comes from a collection of Dutch old dirty songs. Obviously from the song's title, this song is about a prostitute with lyrics such as 'Wanneer je me zoekt, ik zit in de yab-yum, verdien dan mijn boterham met mijn tum-tum' which means, 'When you are looking for me, I am at the Yab Yum, where I earn my money with my tum-tum. ' I love that rhyme so much. (Yab Yum was an old famous brothel and tum-tum are Dutch candy produced by Lemco. They're especially popular during winter season with bags of Dutch holiday candy such as pepernoten mixed with tum tums. Tum tum gummies are my 2nd favorite type of gummies in the world and minor confession time, but when I wrote in that one headcanong of Murasakibara getting addicted to cannabis candy as an young adult I felt that because cannabis based tum tums are my fucking kryptonite).
youtube
This is a little less folk but it is a comedic song sung by famous Dutch comedian, actor and singer Wim Sonneveld. He is regarded as one of the big 3 of the Dutch cabaret after the WWII period. Tiny bit of trivia, but my grandmother loved this song and named my mom after it. So every time I listen to this song I am grinning at the lyrics with warmth because Margootje's stubborn and silly nature does reflect on my mom.

Taika Waititi: “I just want to spend my money and enjoy it”
Tumblr media
As he talks about what a fabulous thing it is to be Taika Waititi, he occasionally glances out the window of the hotel to the gin palaces moored in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. So, which one is his?
“They’re all mine. I’m actually trying to get rid of some of these to make room for my QE3.” Everyone in the room laughs – there’s a Disney PR team with camera crew present for a small conveyor belt of local interviews with journalists under instruction not to ask our most prominent global celebrity anything unrelated to his new movie. But Waititi does present as a man who has done quite well for himself. That’s assuming the jewellery that is adorning his fingers, neck and ear is as expensive as it looks. Of course it is. The man’s been on the cover of Vogue, after all, albeit as half of a “power couple” with wife of a year-plus, UK pop star Rita Ora.
It’s not the Listener that has brought up the fruits of his success. Just before the boat quips, Waititi had been pondering the difference between being the young Taika following his creative whims and the 48-year-old one, who now doesn’t have the option of starting things – like multimillion-dollar superhero films – and not finishing them because he can’t be bothered. Add to that, he has so many irons in the fire, there is a risk of a stable overflowing with shoeless horses. That’s whether it’s writing that Star Wars film (“four pages,” he deadpans on how far he’s got), acting in pirate comedy series Our Flag Means Death, making videos for the All Blacks, among other corporate gigs, or supposedly doing remakes of seemingly everything he ever liked growing up. Yes, there is a New Zealand film on his to-do list. More of which later.
To that work-in-progress pile (“I’ve got a few irons underneath the other irons”) you can also add a redo of Mel Brooks’ classic comedy Young Frankenstein. The Jewish-American comedy great liked Waititi’s Hitler-spoofing Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit very much – it reminded him of his own Hitler-spoofing good old days. He asked Waititi if he’d like to remake Young Frankenstein, the 1974 film starring Gene Wilder that was arguably his greatest big-screen comedy. You don’t say no to Mel Brooks. He is 97, after all. That said, Waititi says he could do with a break from the blacksmith shop. Right now, he says, “I just want to spend my money and enjoy it”. Well, reportedly, he has splashed out on that unobtainable thing for many Kiwi artists of his generation – a nice house in Auckland. The NZ Herald last month reported he’d bought a $10.5 million waterfront property in Point Chevalier, supposedly as a base for his joint custody of his two daughters with his former wife, producer Chelsea Winstanley.
We would be discussing his purchase – after all, who doesn’t like a natter about Auckland real estate? – but this interview is taking place back in April. Disney stipulated it couldn’t run until the local release of his new film Next Goal Wins, which it eventually bumped until the end of the year, having made its New Zealand staff redundant in the interim. Next Goal Wins is based on the true story – there was an earlier doco of the same name – about the American Samoan football team, the biggest losers of any Fifa World Cup qualifying round, having gone down 31-0 to Australia. It stars many familiar faces including Oscar Kightley, Beulah Koale, Dave Fane (“all of my mates – I think Robbie Magasiva is the only one not in this”). And, as the Palagi saviour coach, is Michael Fassbender, an actor not exactly known for his comedy. He plays Dutch-American Thomas Rongen, who became the team’s coach and lifted them from the bottom of the Fifa rankings, a little.
Tumblr media
It’s a film that seems to have been stuck in extra time. It was shot in Hawai’i in 2019. Then came the pandemic, which paused production for a year. Along the way, Armie Hammer, who played a minor role as an American Fifa official, became persona non grata due to a storm of sexual abuse allegations, which required reshoots with comic actor Will Arnett subbing in. “I was actually already changing that character in the edit and Will came in and played a different version of it,” says Waititi, who isn’t the first director caught with a cast member who’s acquired a toxic reputation. But all his films, even his modest budget New Zealand ones at the start of his career, have taken years. “This is just the normal Taika schedule … I started working on Star Wars three years ago. By the time I finish, it will probably be another four years from now.” Next Goal Wins debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and opened in North America last week. The reviews have been decidedly mixed. That’s possibly because, like his parody-risking Thor films, it’s trying to be two things at the same time – a feel-good underdog sports film with the coach trying to redeem himself, and a send-up of feel-good sports films.
The American-Samoan team featured Jaiyah Saelua, a fa’afafine who was the first transgender international footballer. Played by fa’afafine actor Kaimana in the film, the character is a big chunk of the story. Some reviews have wondered why the film’s whole focus wasn’t Saelua. Why wasn’t it? “Jaiyah’s story is really interesting, but I was not tempted, because I really wanted it … to be about that relationship between the team and Thomas. But also him and the team, because there are a lot of other interesting characters there … [Jaiyah’s story] wasn’t something that I was massively drawn to as the main thing.” Waititi wanted to keep things light and bright in what he has said is his least cynical film yet. By which he means? “It’s more just that in this film nothing bad happens to anyone. In all of the other films there’s some darkness there. Jojo Rabbit is probably the most cynical, but in a satirical way. But with this film, the message is on the poster: “Be happy.” I think one of the most important parts of the film is when Thomas says, ‘I can’t win’, and Oscar says, ‘Well, then lose, but don’t do it alone, come lose with us.’ That’s a really important thing. If it was in an American’s hands, it would be all about winning … I think it’s good to embrace losing but doing it together.” Waititi isn’t much of a football fan. He played as a kid for a while before switching to rugby. “I played it from, like, eight to 10. I just felt like it was a real white sport, so I was a bit turned off because all of my mates were playing rugby. I just enjoyed playing touch a lot more than waiting for that round ball to come my way … ‘Can someone, like, kick it to me?’ “Notoriously, soccer is one of the worst things to try to film, because it just always comes across as super boring … It’s bad enough watching it when you’re waiting for something to happen in a big game. But it’s just a hard sport to make look interesting on film. And I think we did a really good job.” Whatever Next Goal Wins does at the box office – and it’s unlikely to be troubling Oscar voters – you suspect Waititi’s life and career will continue on its seemingly charmed way. According to the man living it, it has always been thus.
“It’s like The Truman Show – everything has just been put in front of me, for me. Like, you’ve just been sent in here to entertain me for 15-20 minutes, then you’ll go and these people [the PR team] will do something for me. My mother says this to me all the time … I used to write stories about how the world was on fire and everyone was dying. My parents died and I was the only one who survived. I’m always, like, the star of my own show … This is basically my whole story, just for me.” There are words for that. “It’s called being a Leo. Oh, narcissism? It’s true.” But with that, he says, is the self-doubt of being a fêted figure but feeling a bit of a fake. “It all comes from a deep place of insecurity and imposter syndrome – all the things that everyone else in this industry has – the deep sense of not feeling like you belong here, or that you’ve gotten away with something, and no one’s found out yet. “Most people in this industry have that fear or that sense that it’s either all going to be taken away – the window is going to close – you’re going to be irrelevant soon, or that you’ve somehow stumbled into this undeservedly – that there’s been some sort of glitch or mistake, and no one has noticed that you don’t know what you’re doing. “If anyone asks me, ‘So, how do you make films?’ I don’t know. I don’t know any of the names of the equipment on set. All I know is what I’d like to see as an audience member in a rectangle on a big screen, and I’ll try my hardest to get that. “I think directing in general is just you making decisions fast and confidently, and then people will believe you and follow you.” Does he have anything left to prove? “Nah, I’m good. Film wasn’t even my dream. I didn’t have a dream of doing this, and I’ve already achieved it. I don’t care about anything other than just my happiness and my family.” His marriage to Ora has made him both tabloid-famous and a glossy magazine fixture. He also appears to have met everybody. Yes, he has been starstruck on occasions. Such as when Ora introduced him to Mick Jagger at a party. He gulped, excused himself and departed.
Tumblr media
“It was, ‘I’m not going to sit down and talk to you because I’m going to fuck this up, so I’m just going to walk away.’ ‘Have a good night.’ That was enough for me.” He will be busy for the foreseeable future with whatever is next on his Hollywood to-do list. But he does have the makings of a New Zealand film in a drawer somewhere. One of his early short films, Tama Tū, was about six Māori Battalion soldiers in World War II Italy. He’s been tinkering with an idea about a battalion feature. It is the “Don Quixote of all films that every Māori film-maker has been trying to make,” says Waititi. He’s not the only one – Muru director Tearepa Kahi also has one in the works. Waititi feels his is a good 10 years away. “I think the problem is we shouldn’t be making a Saving Private Ryan version of the Māori Battalion film because we’ve already got Saving Private Ryan, right? So, it has to be something that celebrates being Māori – the stories, the cool, amazing stories of the battalion. It’s got to be in our style, which means it has to be entertaining and fun.”

AUDREY HEPBURN
Audrey Kathleen Hepburn (née Ruston; 4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) was a British actress. Recognized as a film and fashion icon, she was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third-greatest female screen legend from the Classical Hollywood cinema and was inducted into the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame List.
Born into an aristocratic family in Ixelles, Brussels, Hepburn spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England and the Netherlands. She attended boarding school in Kent, England from 1936 to 1939. With the outbreak of World War II, she returned to the Netherlands. During the war, Hepburn studied ballet at the Arnhem Conservatory and by 1944, she performed ballet to raise money to support the Dutch resistance. Hepburn studied ballet with Sonia Gaskell in Amsterdam beginning in 1945 and with Marie Rambert in London from 1948. She began performing as a chorus girl in West End musical theatre productions and then had minor appearances in several films. Hepburn rose to stardom in the romantic comedy Roman Holiday (1953) alongside Gregory Peck, for which she was the first actress to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award for a single performance. That year, she also won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her performance in Ondine.
Hepburn went on to star in a number of successful films such as Sabrina (1954), in which Humphrey Bogart and William Holden compete for her affection; Funny Face (1957), a musical in which she sang her own parts; the drama The Nun's Story (1959); the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961); the thriller-romance Charade (1963), opposite Cary Grant; and the musical My Fair Lady (1964). In 1967, she starred in the thriller Wait Until Dark, receiving Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. After that, Hepburn only occasionally appeared in films, one being Robin and Marian (1976) with Sean Connery. Her last recorded performances were in the 1990 documentary television series Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement – Informational Programming. In 1994, Hepburn's contributions to a spoken-word recording titled Audrey Hepburn's Enchanted Tales earned her a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children. She stands as one of few entertainers who have won Academy, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards.
Hepburn won three BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress in a Leading Role. In recognition of her film career, she received BAFTA's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and the Special Tony Award. Later in life, Hepburn devoted much of her time to UNICEF, to which she had contributed since 1954. Between 1988 and 1992, she worked in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America and Asia. In December 1992, Hepburn received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. A month later, she died of appendiceal cancer at her home in Tolochenaz, Vaud, Switzerland at the age of 63

you're making me consider watching those east asian (korean? japanese?) romantic tv shows you watch. do you have any recommendations for someone who tried to watch one (1) k-drama once (1x) and quickly stopped because the genre conventions were very different from what i was used to and that made it take more energy than i was expecting. (was expecting a typical romantic comedy plot like i'm used to and like, i think it was a typical romantic comedy plot but just like, not western)
like, is there a show that's relatively easy to get into? did i get unlucky with that one k-drama (and my own capacity for adjustment in that moment)?
also something that can help me watch stuff is episode summaries to read beforehand, if you're the kind of person who reads episode summaries sometimes and if so, do you have a recommendation for where to read them?
if this ask feels like work to you, please don't answer it. but if this feels like a nice chance to get someone into a thing you're into, i'd love to hear your recommendations
also i'm guessing they don't speak english in thesee shows, nor dutch, so like, would the first result on google for "show name watch free online" typically have good subtitles or are there things to watch out for or look for?
hi bestie, thank you so much for sending me this ask! i'm really happy to hear that my obsession has made you want to check out what the fuss is all about 😍 i've been almost exclusively watching shows from thailand for the past few months, and i'll gladly recommend some! (as for the episode summaries thing, i'm sorry i can't help you, i never read stuff like that.)
many of these shows are free to watch on youtube, and they usually come with english subtitles of varying quality. lately, gmmtv shows have had really amazing translations, but you need to be a bit forgiving with some of the older shows and shows made by other studios.
that said, let's get into the recommendations!
personally, i started this journey with kinnporsche the series (2022, 14 episodes), but that's like being dropped into the ocean from 500 feet above ground with no warning and expected to stay alive by any means necessary. the experience was absolutely amazing and 100% life-changing for me, and i've been showing kp to as many of my irl friends as possible because in my opinion, everyone should watch it, but as a first foray into thai bl it is... a LOT. (if that sounds intriguing to you, message me privately about where to watch it.)
however, here are some other suggestions in case you want to ease into the whole thing:
are you into comedy?
bad buddy (2021, 12 episodes) free to watch on youtube
this one became an instant classic and has a HUGE fandom here on tumblr. two college students have a shared history as the kids of two families who hate each other, and have been made to compete in everything since childhood... however, what their parents didn't plan for was the two of them falling in love. amazing chemistry between the main couple, will make you ugly cry.
my school president (2022, 12 episodes) free to watch on viki
super sweet romcom about a group of school friends who are in a band and are trying to win a battle of the bands type competition. the main love story is cute, heartfelt and very moving and you're going to end up wanting to adopt all of the kids.
care for some higher heat?
only friends (2023, ongoing) free to watch on youtube
if you want to get into something that's currently airing with a vibrant and active fandom, try only friends. everyone is problematic, morality is for losers, it's incredibly erotic, it's been three episodes and almost all of the main characters have already had sex scenes. plot what plot/insane college friend group without plot.
in case you would like to sob uncontrollably:
laws of attraction (2023, ongoing) free to watch on youtube
a man's niece is killed in a car accident that might actually be a murder. said man hires an unhinged lawyer to investigate. still airing (final episode will air on saturday), WILL twist your heart in such a way that you're probably going to need therapy. insanely heated chemistry between the main pairing, absolutely incredible acting from film thanapat.
moonlight chicken (2023, 8 episodes) free to watch on youtube
a poor restaurant owner is struggling dealing with raising his nephew, his own trauma and the pressures of capitalism. also, some guy he slept with keeps hanging around his restaurant because he wants to teach him to love again. this show makes you feel pain but it always hands you a cup of hot chocolate and caresses your back right after. aftercare for the viewer done right.
free philosophy classes wanted?
not me (2021, 14 episodes) free to watch on youtube
local group of gay anarchists are trying to bring a capitalist to justice. they discuss the concepts of justice and morality at length. what exactly is the power of art? if the law is unjust, then how to define justice? and how can we change the world for the better? made by a trans woman, a must-watch in the genre.
be my favorite (2023, 12 episodes) free to watch on youtube
what does it mean to live a good life? how can we ever know what choices to make? what if you could go back and change the things you did wrong? very gentle, compassionate and kind storytelling. this is my personal favorite bl after kinnporsche and about as far from kinnporsche storytelling-wise as anything could possibly get.
why not go for the classics?
until we meet again (2019, 17 episodes) free to watch on youtube
two college students discover they have a soulmate bond and get flashes of memory from their previous lives, making one of them incredibly traumatized as they try to find out what really happened back then. this one is truly a classic bl: filmed on a potato, atrocious audio quality, trope-heavy. however, the way this show manages to sneak up on you and threaten your entire life is unparalleled and i'm still not over those final two episodes.
he's coming to me (2019, 8 episodes) free to watch on youtube
this one is a hidden gem. there's almost no fandom for it on here but it's a show that i can recommend wholeheartedly. a guy falls in love with a ghost he keeps seeing in the cemetery and tries to help him unravel the secret of his violent death. features a whole bunch of actors who are now considered veterans/heavy hitters.
i hope this was helpful! message me if you have any more questions 😊

I DO NOT OWN THIS GIF:
Tumblr media
"Come on! Touch the tit!"
Now, I knew John Silver was a little weird, but what the actual fuck was going on in here?
I was looking all over for Chuck because I had the biggest surprise. I had been out with an injury for quite some time, my first time being back at a show. Since I wasn't booked, my first priority was being with my best friend in the whole world.
Finding him in the locker room with John, Alex, and a shirtless 10, having Chuck cornered in his chair and talking about touching tits? Yeah, this was weird, but I quickly ended it.
"Hey, back off! He's mine."
Chuck's jaw was almost to the floor, jumping out of his seat and running to me:
"Y/N!"
Seeing him run after me with the biggest smile on his face made me so happy. Just a moment ago, he was in a chair looking uncomfortable and depressed. Now? Jumping for joy and throwing me up into his arms, spinning around.
"No! He needs to touch the tit!" John stressed, but we completely ignored him; Chuck wondered correctly:
"You're back?! Like, you're cleared?!"
"Back and ready to go, baby! Wooo!" I swung back in his arms a little, smiling and laughing when he started jumping more, hugging me tighter, and shaking me around.
"HELL YEAH!"
Even John, Alex, and 10 were cheering along, but of course, being goofy:
"Oh hey! She has tits! Get 'em, Chuck!"
With me and Cass gone, Trent reunited with Rocky, it was obvious how lonely Chuck was, but I was here to make that all go away.
"If you're not booked, how about we get to the hotel, get some take out and have a good, old-fashioned, best friend's movie night?" I offered and he dropped me down, rushing to grab his things:
"Read my mind, girlfriend!" He smiled, taking his bag and my hand, "Peace out!"
"But, the titties!" John called out, Chuck and I laughing at him while we made our way out, straight to the car and to the hotel.
Our food, movie, hotel nights were like a sacred ritual. Although it was just the two of us this time, it was just as fun and meaningful. We stuck with a classic comedy, The Mask, had some of the best food in this whole town, and as a little treat, I got some drinks from room service and it was our little heaven.
Finishing our food, I took the trash and threw it away, washing my hands quickly so I could jump on the bed next to Chuck, smiling:
"I don't think I've been this happy in a minute."
"Me either," He smiled, being goofy and grabbing a pillow, smacking me softly and teasing me, "But watch where you're jumping!"
"It's like that?!" If he wanted a pillow fight, it was on! Taking a pillow, I jumped up and smacked him in the head with it, trying to playfully smother him with it, but he overpowered me, beating me back with his pillow.
The room was filled with laughter, especially when I about fell off the bed, but I caught myself, running right back at him with a playful war cry and swinging.
Chuck trying to protect himself made me trip with his legs extending, catching me before I fell, but my eyes shot down when I felt his hands on my breasts, not afraid to squeeze them.
"Whatcha doing there?" I wheezed at how big his eyes grew, only laughing harder when he referenced John earlier:
"Practicing my titty touches?"
"You want to practice titty touches after all hm?" Something about him touching me felt so right, having his eyes follow my hands around my back and up my shirt, unclasping my bra, sitting across his thighs while shrinking my arms into my shirt, letting my bra fall, "I do have real tits unlike John and them."
"Much better tits," His eyes were fixed on my nipples showing through my shirt, trying to hide his tongue on his lip, fingertips pressing into the bed hard.
"If you want the practice, I'm willing to help," I smirked, feeling sudden hotness in my cheeks, raising my shoulders so my shirt raised up and showed the bottom curve of my breasts.
"Nothing wrong with some practice," He smirked back, hands cupping my breasts softly and just that first touch had me losing control, leaning to kiss him while grinding against his thigh, straddling him when his hands threw my shirt off.
Needing to see them for himself, his soft touches turned into squeezes, thumbs flicking at my nipples, pinching and twisting them softly.
He had my eyes closed and a dream in my head, sitting between his legs and naturally drifting to his hard-on, able to feel the line of his cock rubbing against my wet panties, feeling the outline of my cunt, and getting the pressure right on my clit, the pleasure making me grind softly.
"Not so sure if you needed the practice," I hummed softly, meeting his gaze, "Because it feels like you know what you're doing."
"With tits like these, it comes naturally," He smiled, lifting me up some for his mouth to latch around my nipple, "They're perfect."
"Must be," The way he sucked on my nipple, not hard, but not soft either, the slight nibbles; it had me thinking about even more, palming his cock and taking the invitation into his shorts, so ready that I had him making slight noises at how fast my hand was working his cock.
"Wanna practice some other touches?" He was ready too, making sure to get his last fix of tits with a quick motorboat, kicking off his shorts while I did the same with mine, leading:
"I got a good idea in mind."
Sitting between his legs again, I grinded just the same, except this time, rubbing the shaft of his cock through my folds all the way up to the tip, having him watch as I did it slower, processing the even better feeling.
"You were always so creative," He bit his lip softly, leaning back against the wall to make it easier, guiding my hips upward so his tip was nudging my clit.
"Care to let me get a little more creative then?" I winked, raising up more as his pinch on my ass agreed:
"Get as creative as you want to be."
We shared a moan at his cock pushing into me softly, sitting on his cock carefully till I was sitting again, but there was no keeping this vanilla, having his smile grow into that mischievous smirk of his when I planted my feet against the wall, rocking myself down onto him to take his cock deeper.
"Oh yeah," He huffed out, leaning against the wall and holding my thighs, throwing his hips into mine, "I swear you always know what I'm thinking."
"You needed a good time like this, hm?" Picking myself up and holding the back of his head, I kissed with all tongue, throwing my hips quicker with my legs more elevated, moaning more at his hips slipping his cock in even deeper.
"Mhm," He hummed, swirling his tongue with mine, "And you always know how to give me a good time."
"I know you best," I kissed once more before I had to stop, biting my lips and hiding my louder moans, but he made sure he heard them, yanking my hips along with his thrust, making me whine, "Chuck!"
"If you know me best, should know that I love hearing some noise," He kept on yanking my hips, watching his cock moving in and out of me nearly getting him off.
"Gonna get a whole lot of loud noise if you keep on doing that," I stopped caring about if I was loud or not, but surely getting louder, his strength making sure the tempo was fast and each smack of our hips were powerful, a pound in my lower stomach had me screaming his name.
"Oh, I'm gonna keep doing it," His arms latched around my neck and mine did the same to his, the both of us going at max speed, feeling the spasm of my walls and getting me closer and closer, that tone in his voice adding to it, "Not till you make a mess all over me."
"I'm gonna!" My jerks were so much that I was nearly jumping up, but throwing myself right back down, that feeling even stronger and better than before, making me do it over and over till I was ready to give way, "I'm gonna, Chuck! I-"
My neck snapped back with the arch of my back, breathless and sweating a little, dirty noise I didn't even know that I could make flying out with the gush of slick surely making a mess on his cock and thighs.
I threw his hands off so I could fall back and breathe, but kept my back arched so his cock was still inside of me, his hands rubbing up my stomach and breasts, letting the feeling set for a moment with his gasp:
"Holy fuck, Y/N. That's just-fuck."
"Fuck is right," I huffed back, whining softly at the hollow in my walls when he slid out, joining me on his stomach, keeping me in an embrace and relaxing with me, getting a little more heartfelt:
"Gosh, I missed you so much."
"I missed you too," I smiled, slicking his hair back to see that handsome face that I always admired, "Feels so good to be back with you."
"So good," He rubbed my back softly, expressing more, "You know Cass isn't around and Trent must've forgot that I existed when Rocky came back-"
"He can keep Rocky," I held his head up so he could see my smile, how much I meant it when I kissed, "Because you and me are the real best friends."

Next Goal Wins Movie Review
Dutch coach Thomas Rongen attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners.
After years of delay, Taika Waititi’s latest film, Next Goal Wins, is finally having its wide release after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, in which it received mixed reviews, just like Jojo Rabbit. But those reviews didn’t deter me as I enjoy Waititi’s unique comedic style with his meta commentary and humor. However, I am left disappointed with Next Goal Wins. Yes, it is an entertaining comedy primarily due to its classic underdog story and the ensemble's performance. Still, there is so much left to be desired as Next Goal Wins is an amalgamation of Waitit’s worst qualities as a filmmaker.
As previously stated, I love Waititi’s comedic style, but here he and co-writer Iain Morris can’t help but throw in a joke every five seconds into the screenplay. These jokes ruin many serious scenes that would have been incredibly compelling if the jokes didn’t force themselves into the room.  Moreover, it becomes incredibly tiring to see the same five jokes being repeated over and over again. It was funny the first time, but after a while, it got old very quickly. It’s similar to the screaming Goats joke seen in Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi needed to pull the reins back and allow the story to flow naturally. He has proven previously in Jojo Rabbit and in The Hunt for the Wilderpeople that he knows when to be serious in tone and not put in a joke. I am wondering where that person is right now.
However, that is not the end of Next Goal Wins problems. The biggest problem that plagues this movie is its narrative focus. It’s a mash-up between the classic “fish-out-of-water” and “sports underdog”, that follows these narratives almost beat per beat. However, with these two story tropes, the narrative clashes as it can’t decide who to focus on. Thus causing the characters, their relationships, and their struggles to feel shallow and emotionally manipulative. If it had focused on one of the three points of view it introduces, the coach, the team, or their relationship, this feature would have been much more engaging and impactful. However, because it is a mix between these three, it movie never feels like it has a central focus.
But the movie's biggest crime is that it’s acting a lot smarter than what it actually is. It states in the very beginning that it’s going to subvert the white savior trope that is common in many sports films. However, it falls right into the trope it sets to subvert because that is what happened in real life. When American Samoa brought in Thomas Rongan to coach their team, he changed their team forever in his single year. He gave them the guidance and knowledge they needed to change their team around, as well as providing him wisdom he desperately needed. Yet, the movie underscores his influence as all the team needed was to have fun to win in the movie.  This could have worked if the team was shown to be somewhat organized before Rongan’s arrival, but instead, they are shown as comically disorganized. Thus when they finally get the speech telling them to have “fun”, and they become an entirely different team, it's incredibly unearned. This could have worked if it had been properly set up like in Ted Lasso, where the team and the coach both needed each other to achieve their goals. That would have been more wholesome and closer to reality.
With all of that stated, the movie is still very enjoyable and this is primarily due to the performances from the ensemble. Michael Fassbender breaks his dramatic and dark type casting in this oddball comedy. For the most part, his comedic timing works for me even though he does feel out of place at moments. But when it comes to the dramatic parts, he delivers the goods. Oscar Nightley does bring in some great comedic moments and has some great chemistry with the ensemble. However, the biggest standout was Kaimana playing Jaiyah Saelua, the first non-binary trans-woman on a FIFA team. She is the emotional heart of this film and should have been the movie's main focus as she has a very interesting conflict.  Her conflict is a very relevant one with trans athletes on whether they continue to take hormones to feel like themselves or stop taking hormones so they can continue to play the sport they love. It’s a fascinating conflict that I wish was explored more. This was a massive missed opportunity and is especially shocking coming from self-proclaimed gay icon, Taika Waititi.
Overall, Next Goal Wins is an entertaining classic underdog tale that is heavily reliant on its feel-good story and the performance of the ensemble. But, this movie could have been so much better if there had been several more rewrites to help focus the script's narrative. As well as Taika recognizes that he needs to stop forcing humor into these stories and let them flow naturally again. He has proven it before and I know that he is better than this. Hopefully, with his next feature film, he will finally learn how to do his unique comedy right again.
My Rating: C+

They’re just like…classic corny Dutch songs, the kind you sing when you’re drunk. Sentimental songs, kind of related to chanson and schlager. Ones people will definitely know here but aren’t particularly well-known elsewhere. I guess maybe something like Neil Diamond or Kenny Rogers would be the closest non-European equivalent, although that’s not exactly right. Both of them are that kind of song but the André Hazes specifically, as Hazes is probably the most famous and beloved of that genre (levenslied), a beloved tragic figure of working-class Amsterdam music. Zij Gelooft in Mij is also such a big dramatic song that you either have to lean into the drama or play it for comedy, which will be interesting either way.
Three Little Birds is an unofficial/semi-official anthem of the big Amsterdam football club Ajax (the fans sing it before games and last year Ajax released a Jamaica-inspired Three Little Birds kit, which was a massive sportswear hit), so I’m guessing Ajax will be part of the episodes as well?
To me it shows a certain familiarity with Amsterdam that I’m very curious to see played out - they’re not like, obscure references, but it’s enough to suggest something going on in how they’re going to use it.
But also if either of those Dutch songs show up around Prik it is going to be very hard to believe as the last thing Prik would play is that kind of music. (Also if they treat Prik as a real club - it’s a crowded bar with a DJ and a very small dance floor, that’s not a club here.)

I’m sensitive, a weeper. If you're uncomfortable around emotion, I'm probably not for you ;(
I don't always get the joke. Sometimes I take things the wrong way. Executive Dysfunction can be frustrating. Please don't assume I'm simple. I do have standards. I do have ideologies. Sometimes my ire is more than appropriate when someone is being rude, a bully, or just a dick.
I can act like a mom or a big bro. I may encourage you to hydrate more, or eat more protein and fruit. It's because I care, not because you're not meeting standards.
Sometimes I'm very quiet and have not much at all to say. It's probably not. I'm an introvert and need to recharge. Sometimes just sitting quietly together doing our own thing is as nourishing as chatting about all the things while adventuring about town.
I nap A LOT. I sleep a long time. I can sleep almost anywhere, at any time. I'm a night owl IF I get a second wind, but I can still sleep late every. single. day. I'm more of a mid-day person than either morning or night person ;) See link to know more about the Wolf Chronotype.
I am loyal to a fault.
Friends don’t lie.
Please don’t lose my trust once you gain it.
I am moderately toy-experienced as a Top, but VERY inexperienced as a bottom. Can you teach me gently?
I don't own any formal attire and have a bitch of a time finding business-wear that fits well. My "dressed up" is pretty casual (clean, dark or black jeans, button up shirt, and blazer) and I'm a little embarrassed about it, but I'm trying to find better clothes.
I’m re-learning to do my makeup. I can always use pointers/tips/help.
Let's not be too shy about sharing our views and opinions on sensitive subjects. We may have to agree to disagree on some things. And if anything becomes a dealbreaker, so be it. Let's move on amiably. But please don’t assume that being a Christian who votes "Centrist" and has Independent friends who own guns means I’m a right-wing NRA “Trumper”. You may be surprised what MY views actually are when we get a chance to talk things out. And I'm open to new perspectives. I live with ambivalence. I prefer to make decisions knowing both/all sides to an argument.
Small talk can be awkward. Feel free to ask the deep TMI stuff early on. It's easier to learn about each other now than end up heartbroken too late. I’m really good at oversharing, too. I often can’t tell if you're offended and being stoic, or just feeling neutral about something I've said/shared. Please be patient. Let's always be open and honest with each other.
Around me there is always inappropriate laughter, burps, farts, naughty jokes, cursing. If you’re looking for LT friendship or anything intimate, you’ll eventually meet my friends and family and will need to be cool with cursing and the occasionally rank joke or discussion.
I often laugh out loud in public places, even restaurants, and sometimes I send my food back.
I don’t do well in the heat so prefer shade or indoors but definitely venture out as much as possible during the Summer.
I am trying to become debt-free. Please be willing to help pay for all outings, and easy to feed and entertain ;)

I am afraid of large bully breed dogs. If you have a mastiff or pibble or a cross of either kind, I will probably be weird around them for a while, OR may never be comfortable around them. Once bitten, twice shy.
I live with my hetero BFF and her elderly mom. I probably won’t be able to have you over for games or meals until they are comfortable knowing you for a little while. I’m sorry if this is a Dealbreaker for you. I really do want to share my space(s) with you.

CC's New Watch Ranking 2022: #2 - The Young Girls of Rochefort
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1967, dir. Jacques Demy
Every year on Letterboxd, I make a list of the 100 best films I’ve seen for the first time. It’s a fun way to compare movies separated in time, genre, and country of origin, and helps me keep track of what I’m watching! This is a series of posts about my Top 10.
This is the pinnacle of cinematic joy. No other film contains such happiness, such leaping mirth, such radiant sunshine. This is a glass of lemonade at the height of spring; this is a giggling kiss given behind a carnival. Every few days I turn to my wife and scream-sing “Nous sommes deux soeurs jumelles! Nées sous le signe des Gémeaux!” and it never fails to make us laugh. You’ll find this year’s ranking contains a lot of serious films, many of which touch on the darker elements of our lives. Les Demoiselles de Rochefort stands in stark contrast as a true comedy in the classical sense, concerned only with love and laughter. It is the best musical ever committed to film.
Young Girls follows a pair of twins looking for love. Their mother runs a cafe in the town square, where a caravan of performers have just arrived to set up a carnival. They dance around this space as they seek romance, their soulmates passing through and barely missing them each time. It’s a wonderful comedy of errors, interspersed with the greatest musical numbers you’ve ever seen.
I want to express my affection for this movie with a high-pitched squeal, because every element is perfect. But I’ll try to isolate what’s working here. The story is simple and classical. The visual language is divine. It begins with a very long shot of the caravan traveling over a bridge to arrive in town. The lingering intro makes viewers feel transported into Rochefort, which becomes less of a real city and more of a fairytale kingdom. The set design and costuming is brilliant, and is displayed with a relatively still camera that will rotate to view its subject, but rarely go dutch or do anything else fancy. The stillness makes the contents of the frame shine.
There’s some Wes Anderson levels of symmetry and color at play here, too. The sisters are coded in yellow and pink, and the entire world is tinted to match them. They pass through the Frenchest, most beautiful locations imaginable. An antique store with rococo furnishing and white marble. Little shops made of wood and glass. Cobblestone alleys lined with bright plaster. Truly, every detail, from top to bottom, is made with cinematic beauty and grace. And the music! It soars, it's jazzy, it's a little funky, it's just the best you could imagine.
I’m finding myself at a loss for words! I don’t know what else to say other than this is good - really, really, really good. No movie embodies the freeing feeling of love better. There’s a production history I don’t know about and couldn’t begin to describe. Catherine Deneuve is incredible, but we’ll spend more time talking about her very soon. If you find yourself sad and looking for something to cheer you up, this film is it. Treat yourself to the freedom of the soul this film can instill. You deserve it. When we think of building a better world, we should focus on making it feel like this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for reading! If you made it this far why don’t you give me a follow on Letterboxd, where I post reviews and keep obsessive track of all the movies I watch. Feel free to drop a line if you checked this movie out and want to share your thoughts!
Movies I watched this Week #124 (Year 3/Week 20):
Costa Brava, Lebanon, my 5th bittersweet Lebanese film, debut feature from a young female director. A family of five escaped the chaos of near-future, dysfunctional Beirut to a rural, isolated compound in the mountains. But after 8 years of building a loving nest for themselves, a landfill is being constructed next to their plot and their ideal world implodes. The city trash they tried to leave behind is following them here.
The wife is being played by Nadine Labaki, who directed the Oscar-nominated ‘Capernaum’, which I’m going to watch next. The two young girls are terrific too.
The trailer. 7/10.
🍿
Another controversial first feature from a female director, Instinct by the Dutch Halina Reijn [who went after that to direct A24′s ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’]. An intense psychological thriller about prison therapist Carice van Houten becoming obsessed with an inmate, a violent serial rapist on the verge of being paroled.
Exploring female rape fantasies is a recipe for sensationalism and manipulation, when played out for example by male-gazing misogynists like Paul Verhoeven. But in Reijn hands this dark and ominous tale is (for the most par) told with nuance and ambiguity. A powerful 7/10.
The trailer.
🍿
Massimo Troisi X2:
🍿 Re-watch: Englishman Michael Radford’s Italian classic Il Postino. A nostalgic and enchanting story of a simple postman and his friendship with Chilean poet Pablo Noruda on a small Mediterranean island in the 1950′s. Similar vibes as ‘Cinema Paradiso’, which came a few years earlier, and which also starred Philippe Noiret. A Massimo Troisi’s passion project, and infamous for him dying the very next day after principal photography ended. 10/10.
🍿 Massimo Troisi was actually an acclaimed director, screenwriter and actor before playing ‘The Postman’. But his directorial debut comedy I'm Starting from Three (Ricomincio da tre), with himself as a shy, bumbling caricature of a young man, was nothing but funny. 1/10.
Both movies feature my favorite character actor Renato Scarpa, the memorable inspector from ‘Don’t look now’ (“Signor Baaxter!”).
🍿
Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us, an infectious 2006 concert film, documenting his smashing “US” tour (37 US shows, 565,000 tickets sold, $77 million taken in), when he was 64...
The director of this documentary was absolutely terrible; He filled up the two hours with extremely fast zooms in and out, nervous camera movements, super-quick editing and too many sappy reaction shots of adoring fans in the audience (lots of parents and grandparents with children of all ages, though!). Also, too many celebrities ‘Talking Heads’ emoting how great McCartney is, which was off-putting. Still, the incredible performances of the band, the sensational, live-wire concerts, the enthusiastic music made it a tearful inspiration.
My best film experience of the week! 9/10.
On McCartney’s website, there's a list of 25 documentaries about him, which I will watch one by one, Inshallah.
🍿
In the fine M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity documentary, he claimed that he was not an artist, but a mathematician. The film brings to life his  geometric-abstract visions. And while it touches on the relationship between him and Bach’s, it never mentions Gödel. Not crazy about the Stephen Fry narration. 8/10. (Photo Above).
🍿
Documentary No. 3 of the week: Still, the new heartfelt Michael J. Fox bio-pix combines lots of re-enactments with footage from old movies, as well as some current heart-to-heart interviews about his Parkinson’s.
As a celebrity portrait, it wasn’t relevant to me at all, since I never saw any of his TV work, or even his movies. But the parts about his disability were powerful though.
🍿
2 Russian classics that didn’t resonate with me:
🍿 First watch: Tarkovsky’s 3-hour-long experimental poem about memory, Solaris, his attempt to show that ‘Science-fiction films don’t have to be emotionally shallow’. It must have had a strong influence to the game ‘Myst’, being cultish, mysterious and atmospheric. But its slow-moving premise became so boring to me, that it took me 3 days to finish it. Comparing it to 2001 is unjustified. 2/10.
I planned on following it up with Steven Soderbergh’s later version, but then I hard-passed: Disliking science-fiction movies in general, and hating Hollywood remakes in particular is not a good incentive.
🍿 The Cranes Are Flying, a Soviet World War 2 drama from 1957. As a political expression of the new era after Stalin’s death, it may have been be significant, but today it seems a simple propaganda piece, with some bold visuals. 2/10.
🍿
Mika Kaurismäki is Aki’s older brother and the one who got him interested in movie making. My first film by him, Helsinki Napoli All Night Long was disappointing though: An European-Noir inspired by hardcore American crime stories, and even the cameos of Eddie Constantine, Sam Fuller, Jim Jarmusch and Wim Wender didn’t save it from being a poor parody. 1/10.
🍿
You Can Live Forever, a shallow Canadian romance of two young girls, one of which is a Jehovah Witness, torn between her faith and her love. The other one looks like young Scarlett Johansson but can’t act like her. The flat queer coming-of-age against a fucked-up puritan background had no subtext. It felt auto-biographical, and it actually was. 2/10.
🍿
Who done it?, My 4th (atrocious!) film by Basil Dearden. After 2 unsung masterpieces (’Victim’ and ‘All night long’), and another thought-provoking work (‘Sapphire), this was a terrible ‘Ouch’. A late Ealing Studios low-brow, un-funny ‘comedy’ and Benny Hill's film debut as a bumbling Inspector Clouseau-like fool. Very disappointing 1/10.
🍿
“Put him in a straitjacket and give him an enema! Wait, give him an enema first, then put him in a straitjacket!”
Dracula, dead and loving it, the last film directed by Mel Brooks, an underrated (?) gothic parody. But he already did a much better Transylvanian castle spoof with ‘Young Frankenstein’, and this one just sucked. Leslie Nielsen sporting a Borat accent, and Brooks double-playing the Hungarian angle. The silliness of the occult, should be good for parodies, but not here. 1/10.
As a successful producer, Mel Brooks made ‘The elephant man’, ‘Frances’, ‘The fly’, others...
🍿
2 British shorts by Sam Baron, both with the same Amit Shah:
🍿 Big ears, a little story about a gawky young man with large Obama-ears, who gets very bad news.
🍿 “Hi, I’m here for the orgy” - His earlier short was crisper (and funnier). The orgy, a 15-min. comedy about the same lonely, awkward man who goes to his first orgy. 6/10.
🍿
I adored Jonathan Glazer’s three previous films (’Sexy Beast’, ‘Birth’, and ‘Under the skin’), so I’m eagerly waiting for what is supposedly a new disturbing masterpiece from him, ‘The zone of Interest’ (It was based on a novel by Martin Amis, who just died yesterday!).
Glazer used to have a YouTube channel with some of the many film-like commercials he had directed before branching into features. Here are a few of his standalone ads:
Stella Artois Ice Skating Priests, Last orders and Devil's Island (with Ron Perlman) *
Sony Bravia Paint *
Guinness’s Surfer and Swimblack and Dreamer *
Levi’s Kung Fu and Odyssey *
Wrangler’s Ride *
Barclay Bank’s Centaur (with Samuel L Jackson) *
Apple watch Flight *
More Here *
Unrelated: Christopher Walken Sky-dancing in Fatboy slim Weapon of choice, by Spike Jonze.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
🍿
Fletcher Van Hall is an SF native and only child to older parents who couldn’t really do much with him, because he was a mouthy wild child and got into a lot of fights in his adolescence. His parents tried various forms of discipline and punishment but Fletcher continued to act out–fueled further by his parents quickly giving up on him and sometimes insulting him. When his parents really couldn’t take anymore of his behavior and the consequences that came with it, they made him go live with his uncle–who wasn’t drastically younger than his parents but connected with Fletcher and could level his bone-headedness.
His uncle Drew owned The Ink Tank–the tattoo parlor that Fletcher now runs and works at. His uncle has 2 kids of his own but they’re ungrateful, greedy jackasses (there’s really no polite way of describing how they are, more often than not). Nearly everything Fletcher learned about tattoo artistry, he learned from his uncle and he’s been really proud to keep the shop open and successful. Prior to getting to actually work on body art, Fletcher had been working as a bouncer at a local club–an apprenticeship at The Ink Tank during the day, and monitoring a Castro club at night. Art, particularly drawing and tattoo design gave Fletcher an outlet and purpose, which grew to be his passion. This helped him calm down significantly, even though his lack of filter and combative nature still get him caught up in conflicts from time to time.
His uncle Drew was running and working in the shop until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He still hangs around the shop and is very much the father-figure Fletcher’s needed in his life. Drew’s own children don’t have the best relationship with him and have been pushing for him to close the shop–essentially putting Fletcher out of income–ever since his diagnosis. He’s refused, having seen Fletcher’s success with the shop, on top of his own pride in the shop’s long-standing legacy in SF.
Today, Fletcher has relationships with his crew at The Ink Tank, his uncle, and a handful of people he actually considers friends. He can’t stand his cousins but occasionally puts up with them (as much as he can manage) for his uncle’s sake whenever they come around. As far his parents go, he has next-to-no relationship with them. They’ve called to wish him Happy Birthday, and inconsistently contact him around the holidays, but that’s about it. When it comes to romantic relationships, Fletcher identifies as panseuxal and has had romantic relationships of varying kinds–from casual hookups and dating, to a few serious relationships over the year with people of different genders, but mostly women. His last relationship ended August 2022 after almost a year of being together with his ex. He hasn’t been actively looking but hasn’t closed himself off from relationships either. Most of his focus these days has been on the shop and his uncle.
Dutch (1991) - The Forgotten John Hughes Thanksgiving Classic - Episode 293
This week, we here in the states are celebrating Thanksgiving! The time honored tradition of gluttenous eating among family and friends, football (if you're into that sort of thing), and avoiding the inevitable clash of politics that comes when you invite your boomer Uncle Larry to dinner.
But aside from food, there are a few movies we've come to associate with the holiday. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (see our back catalog) is one of the go to films to come from the mind of John Hughes.  But did you know there is another Thanksgiving classic out there. Dutch, the 1991 family/dark comedy starring Ed O'Neil hot off the success of Married with Children and a super young Ethan Embry try to replicate the formula that Steve Martin and John Candy perfected but add a spin about the complexities of class and the struggle within a family dealing with divorce.
Does this classic from yester-year hold up? We'll find out today!
English and Italian languages
Tumblr media
Dante Alighieri English and Italian languages, an article that shows the reciprocal influences and contaminations between the two idioms, with a particular focus on the Italian language and culture. The Italian language is truly "infested" with English words, which have now entered common use. But even staunch "purists" should remember that 60% of the Anglo-Saxon language has its origins on this side of the Alps. Very often we hear Italians lamenting about the great number of English words in their vocabulary. Many people don't like the mass media's insistence on using such words as bestseller, look, personal and lotion , and they often ridicule their elitist friends when they hear them attempting to pronounce the latest "in" English words. In England one reads the same story in letters to The Times and The Telegraph , denouncing foreign words and expressions, particularly "A-mericanisms," as intrusions on the purity of the English language. People who make such criticisms should realise, however, that one of the reasons why English is so rich in vocabulary is because it has borrowed so many words from other languages. An Italian using the words yacht, bungalow and robot might well be forgiven for thinking that these words are English, when their true origins are in fact Dutch, Hindi and Czechoslovakian. Many words which Italian has borrowed from English are of Latin origin: camping, design, dispenser, leasing, privacy, schedule, sport and jeans are corruptions of campus, signum, pendo, laxus, privo, scedo, porto and Janua (Genoa) respectively. It was not, however, Genoa's own Christopher Columbus who brought jeans to the shores of the New World; rather, it was Levi Strauss.
Tumblr media
Italian town Rome The first invasion of England, after the Celts had settled there, was indeed by the Latin-speaking Romans. Yet their linguistic influence was small and was limited to place names, e.g. Manchester (Latin castra). There was a stronger Latin influence when Christianity arrived under the auspices of St. Augustine in 597 A.D.: a host of Latin ecclesiastical words were introduced and the majority of religious words in English have Latin roots. Later, after the Norman Conquest of 1066, the originally Anglo-Saxon language had to withstand 300 years of French rule and take third place to French (the language of administration) and Latin (the language of the church). Probably the greatest Italian influence came with the Renaissance, during which the enthusiastic English borrowed as many Italian, Latin and Greek words as they could lay their hands on. In Shakespeare's day, for example, Signior was a common term of address in England. In this period Italy was a major center of culture, art, and learning. Many English writers and scholars, such as Geoffrey Chaucer and John Milton, were influenced by Italian literature, philosophy, and art. They often borrowed words and ideas from Italian works, which contributed to the enrichment of the English language. The English scholars and authors so discovered the great Italian literature, particularly the works of Dante Alighieri (author of "The Divine Comedy"), Petrarch, and Boccaccio, had a profound impact on English literature. Translations and adaptations of these works introduced Italian words and expressions into English. For example, the word "sonnet" comes from the Italian "sonetto." So, the Italian language and culture have had a significant influence on the English language over the centuries. This influence can be traced back to various historical, cultural, and linguistic interactions. Here are some key ways in which Italian has impacted English. We can think of Musical and Art Terminology for instance. Italian has been the language of classical music and art for centuries. Terms like "allegro," "fortissimo," "soprano," "piano," and "crescendo" are just a few examples of Italian words used in music notation and art descriptions. We can also refer to scientific and medical terms. Italian has also contributed to English in the fields of science and medicine. For instance, the word "quarantine" comes from the Italian "quarantina," referring to a 40-day isolation period during the Black Death. Additionally, various anatomical terms, like "femur" and "cornea," have Italian origins.
Tumblr media
Italian art and style Then we have the influence on art and architecture: Italian art and architecture styles, such as Renaissance and Baroque, have influenced English architecture and design. This influence is evident in the design of buildings, sculptures, and paintings. Italy has also left its mark on English through geographical names. The names of Italian cities and regions, such as Venice, Florence, Tuscany, and Sicily, have been adopted into English. Furthermore we must not forget the world of fashion and esign, in fact Italy is known for its fashion and design industries, and many Italian fashion brands and design concepts have made their way into English terminology. Words like "couture," "prêt-à-porter," and "fashionista" are examples of Italian fashion-related terms used in English. If you read through an English dictionary you will find hubdreds of Italian words. Amongst the more general are: fiasco, graffiti, gusto, imbroglio, mafia, influenza (or "flu") and stiletto; from architecture and art come fresco, loggia and chiaroscuro; from music we have adagio, opera and pianoforte ; and more recently there has been a deluge of culinary words such as broccoli, espresso, lasagna, ravioli, spaghetti and, of course, pizza. The story is told of the little American boy who saw a pizzeria on his first trip to Italy and exclaimed: "Look Daddy! They have pizzas in Italy too!" This just goes to illustrate how quickly foreign words are absorbed into a language, so that they soon seem to belong at that language. Italian cuisine therefore has had a substantial influence on English culinary vocabulary. Words like "pasta," "pizza," "espresso," "cappuccino," and "lasagna" are widely used in English to describe Italian dishes and beverages. Try telling the average English person that very "English" sounding words like attack, cash and racket have Italian roots and he probably won't believe you. Having absorbed so many foreign words, it is only natural that English, now spoken by nearly 450 million people as a first language, should begin to exert its own influence on other languages. Beyond specific words, Italian has also influenced English grammar and syntax to some extent. For instance, the use of the definite article "the" in English was influenced by Italian usage. It's important to note that while Italian has influenced English in various ways, English has also influenced Italian, especially in the realm of technology, business, and modern terminology. Language is continually evolving through cultural exchange, and the Italian-English linguistic connection is a testament to the rich tapestry of language development.
Tumblr media
Italian fashion and style Italian has taken over English words in four main ways. First, there is the direct borrowing of words to describe an object or idea for which there was no existing equivalent: club, disc-jockey, flash, hi-fi, know-how, punk, stuntman, test etc. Second, there is the adoption of an English word with an Italianisation of the spelling. This is generally a positive thing to do as it helps to indicate the new word's pronunciation: the best examples of this are bistecca, boicottare, dribblare, gol, rosbif, sniffare and to-stare. Third, there is the borrowing of a word from English with the subsequent translation into Italian: grattacielo (sky-scraper), guerra fredda (cold war), lavaggio del cervello (brainwashing) and pagine gialle (yellow pages). Lastly there is the tendency to take words from English and use them in a totally different context: golf is only a game in English, pullmans are special trains and spiders are merely insects. On the whole then, Italians should not regret the presence of English/American words in their vocabulary. The benefits to English from Latin words have been considerable. They have undoubtedly helped to create one of the most expressive languages in the world, giving it an enormous choice of words with subtle shades of meaning, from the warm, colloquial, down to earth Anglo-Saxon elements (hug, childish, luck) to the more refined Latin ones (embrace, juvenile, fortune). A language needs to grow and it must adapt to changes. If events dictate that English/American is becoming the international language of the future (of commerce, cinema, music, science, sport and technology), Italians can at least console themselves with the fact that English is already full of Italian words and they should welcome, within reason, English words adopted by their own language.
