Nadine would buy an alpaca farm in Iceland with her finder's fee from the ministry of culture + the profits from auctioning off the last of Shoreline's assets, vehicles, and munitions. It would be an impulsive move for her after her father verbally eviscerates her at a party.

And she feels she can't show her face around Johannesburg, or even Cape Town ( where most of Shoreline was based) again.

Chloe would sniff at the beautiful scenery. "Quiet. Unspoilt." She'd mutter, walking down the two tire tracks that were the driveway. Three animals were currently visible in the pasture to her right. They looked like sheep and ponies and giraffes fused together.

Chloe tried to imagine Nadine, with her manicured fingers, shoveling alpaca shit. Or shearing these behemoths. She always had a grace to her under the military veneer, and Chloe knew for a fact she dressed in Burberry when not on the battlefield.

There was a little off road vehicle parked by the front door. Chloe looked around for the other source of the tire tracks, but there was none. She gave the door some knocks. Hope she lets me do some stunts on it, Chloe thought, looking over at the handlebars.

"Who is it?" Came through the heavy light-wooden door.

Chloe chuckled at the nerves in Nadine's voice. "The Easter bunny."

She heard a couple of latches and deadbolts open and the door opened, and she got her delicious eye full of Nadine wearing a rather well-fitting sweater. Chloe stepped over the threshold and embraced her, not waiting for words.

"Chloe you--didn't--oof--call--"

"Yeah, china. Your line was always dead or busy," Chloe said.

"I--the battery--died," A blush was filling Nadine's cheeks as Chloe cupped them in her hands.

"A likely story. You wouldn't be avoiding calls from family, right?"

The ex-Shoreline leader finally shut the door behind Chloe and pushed away from her.

"Why did you come all the way here?"

Because Nadine had sent a wool hat and a postcard with the northern lights and Chloe felt the chill when she pressed it to her heart. And oh yeah. The gig.

"Is that a loom," Chloe said instead.

"Don't play with it," Nadine snapped. "And you didn't answer me."

"Did you expect me to write a letter back? Thought I'd save money posting myself over instead of paying for international package."

Nadine snorted as she sat down by the window. It was, Chloe now saw, a nook. Her tea and book were on a table in front of her armchair.

"Ja. Only polite to write back."

Chloe took stock of her surroundings for the first time. Besides the antique-looking loom, the high ceiling with huge wooden beams, the long windows drawn with patterned curtains Chloe was almost positive Nadine had brought from home, it was sparingly decorated. There were rugs warming the stone floor and an old black stove with chopped wood stacked beside it. Its pipe went out to the wall instead of a chimney.

Chloe put her bag down on the table and plopped down in Nadine's lap.

"Hey!"

Chloe pressed her ear into Nadine's clavicle, closing her eyes as the woman made an indignant noise.

"Chloe what are you doing."

Chloe made the universal "I don't know" mumble. She felt Nadine slip the hat off her. The woman's thighs shifted a little under her own.

"You're not really going to fall asleep on me are you."

"Not...with that attitude...china..."

Chloe ended the sentence with a yawn and felt Nadine's ribs rumble with a small laugh. She curled more into her, feeling Nadine's arm come around her back as she got back to her book.

The smell of Nadine, and the berry-like aroma of the rooibos, and the distant calls of the alpacas already felt like a dream. She slipped away from wakefulness.

On Gyu-ho, the Mundanity of Great Love, and the Destructive Nature of Shame

I have been trying to figure out what I want to write about this relationship, the primary focus of LITBC Part 3. Every time I think about Young and Gyu-ho, I just feel so sad. In some ways, this section of the book was much lighter than the previous ones, but it hit me hard all the same. Because this is the first time our narrator has had a relationship that actually feels mostly healthy, with the outcome he wants for it within his reach—until he self-destructs, of course.

It's all the details of their romance that makes it feel so real. The drunken, bloody makeout on the dirty floor of an Itaewon gay club. Young's passport misfire that ruined their first weekend getaway, and the subsequent nagging from Gyu-ho every time they traveled. The Pororo and Crong stickers on their phone cases. Gyu-ho's erectile dysfunction and Young's surprise at feeling contentment even with a less than ideal sex life. Young getting Gyu-ho a ticket to see that horrible production of Grease, and Gyu-ho hanging curtains and making sure Young ate real food. The breakups and makeups. Young crumpling up bits of paper and throwing them on the ground when he got frustrated with his writing, knowing Gyu-ho would come home and clean them up. The way they fought over the proper way to air dry the laundry, and the Pooh shirts from their Thailand trip slowly morphing into pajamas. A hundred little details of a life lived in companionship with another person, and so many mundane things that will never mean the same thing to Young again. Gyu-ho is his great love, and he doesn't need to say that explicitly to make it clear. It's in the way Young tells us his name. It's in every word on the page.

Part of what makes the end of this relationship so devastating is we could see how good it was for Young. Even as he tried to maintain his tone of emotional detachment, his affection for Gyu-ho shone through in the narration. While they were together, Young became more functional. He started living like an adult, got a proper job to pay the bills, and began writing in earnest. He found some things to like about himself and took pleasure in Gyu-ho's company. He began to envision more for himself, to imagine a life outside of Seoul where he could be free of some of his burdens, and even took steps to pursue it by applying for that position in Shanghai.

And then, of course, one of his burdens caught up with him. It was heartbreaking to realize alongside Young that his illness, his "Kylie," would prevent him from moving, and I was not at all surprised that rather than telling Gyu-ho and making a decision together on how to adjust their plans, he chose to keep his silence, encourage Gyu-ho to keep working toward the move to Shanghai, and then blithely force an ending to the relationship when it was too late for Gyu-ho to change course. That's exactly the Young we know, but it was no less frustrating for being expected. His shame, and the way it rears up and poisons all his relationships, is perhaps the most consistent thing about these separate-but-connected stories of his life. I wish he had chosen something different, that he wasn't so consumed by guilt and self-loathing and his abysmal sense of self-worth, that he could have trusted Gyu-ho to be his partner in this. But I understand why he did what he did, and why he didn't want to hold Gyu-ho back.

This section got to me so much because it was particularly painful to watch Young self-destruct after finally finding a relationship that was good for him, and where he had something to offer to his partner in return. Everything we learned about Gyu-ho told us this could have had a very different ending, if only Young would have let it.

Petty x Eddy Confession

Ok, before I get into this confession, let me say this:

You see, Eddy is your typical tech savvy guy that can't swim, and Petty is your typical tomboyish athletic energetic girl that's terrible at cooking.

This shows that although they're both good at lots of things, even they have their flaws.

I Don't Get It

So I've been catching up on my television off late and I realise why I fell out of it in the first place. Scripts and storylines have gotten THAT bad. Life is too short to watch anything below an 8 and I mean that sincerely.

I would rather take up Tai Chi instead of guzzling grizzly soda, distracting it with yet another distraction. Yeah. A pop-itch. That's how I feel when I watch Rick and Morty for an extended period of time. Spurts of philosophy, funny shit, speculation, most things and captures I resonate with and then this lurking current that I'm whizzing my time away. Sitting like a vegetable watching nonsense that will neither make me better at what I do nor lead me to where I'd like to go. Just breezy grazing. Entertainment, evading the void and expressing its form at the same time.

BAD TV is such a fucking waste of time. Can I just say this? Good TV though, makes you groove. Good anything is great.

Where some TV shows are overrated and the writing is amiss, others don't really get the credit they deserve due to their viewership by niche audiences.

For one, I don't know why HBO's Insecure gets about a 7.5. The lines and acting are real and the acting is definitely better than the likes of the Umbrella Academy, which is an interesting premise done terribly by the actors. Cringedy cringe cringe. Cronge. Still may watch it on a day I'm looking for lavish sets, Ellen Page and time travel. It doesn't hurt that she's on it.

I was saying - season 4 of Black Mirror.

Space fleet was definitely a contrast from its counterpart (British-made episodes) and styled and fashioned, rather than constructed.

The original British episodes made me aah and nothing was always too iPad-centric. American futures continue to fetishise screens and regular high school archetypes still exist as the only period in (d)evolution worth documenting. The original episodes actually make an effort to create a plot and not simply reiterate their liking for spaceships and juvenile galactic exploration of man-children, video games, short skirts, and sickos. Yes, I basically summed up the first episode of season 4's Black Mirror. Another hour long advertisement of cultural appropriation I sat through, under the guise of a critically acclaimed TV Show of course.

Fucking America. Can you not?

- Make mind numbing video games.

- Make mind numbing TV shows.

- Make movies with "messages" and "feel good" songs. The plasticity is depressing.

Every time I see and watch something American, I'm a bit numbed out. By the lack of ingenuity and resistance to really create something worth spending time with. And I think it stems from the time America spends fixing trivial problems and dumbing shit down for its audiences in order to. Ka ching. Dasright. Make more money. Spaceships, gas, and a streak of orange. Fuck it.

And now Kim Kardashian's plan to trademark Kimono and sell it as her premiere underwear brand is just the thing to push me to say -

I just don't get it.

Their food is unhealthy. They create about 30% of the world's emissions, and then have vegans to counter the industrial culture that they created in the first place. Their music is fabricated under labels in conference rooms, with repetitive texts. They cease to create anything worth holding onto barring some bangers belonging to hip hop, vague indie artists, and Detroit. First they feel like it's ok to patent yoga. Now they think it's ok to own the Kimono. I love Kim K. She's a boss bitch tigress and I dig that shit, but I think I'll like her less now. It's a bit of a stretch.

Yet another American taking a gigantic shit on someone else's property.

Hollywood isn't even that good anymore. Everything sounds bad and I can't wait for yet another Avenger movie to whizz my time away with, with average plot lines and standard-grade funny, good old fashioned comebacks and gimmicks. I'm anyway in it for Robert Downey Jr. On a personal level, he's authentic and the man's got to eat. Maybe the world's sentences and emotions are dumbed down because the world doesn't have much of literature and pausing anymore. Maybe my sentences are dumbed down because I don't have much of literature, romance, and pausing.

I don't get it. Why are we so nice to them?

Off Week Takes

We won't be diving too often into APAC (even though its a great region for overwatch). But when I have time I want to talk a little bit about what's happening in APAC OWL, also the Dallas Fuel and Sp9rk1e, and the overall derailment of the French super team Rogue.

APAC

So lets get started by talking about the Guangzhou Charge. A team some "experts" (Custa) are calling possibly the worst team in APAC. At first I thought this was the worst take possble but than I remembered that APAC has less teams than NA and that the Valiant aren't looking that bad (will get into that more later). Mandu and Kariv are still good. Jihun/Rio and Crong are still good. If I had to pick a point of struggle I would pick Coaching and the DPS. Even though Choisehwan is playing out of his mind on Tracer he is not the best Tracer on the team. Eileen is godly on Tracer and I can only assume he is benched because of hero pool and scrim results. Charge are starting the most inexperienced DPS duo in APAC. Technically Krystal for Valiant isn't a rookie and NYXL hasn't played yet but they can still play Ivy (a veteran). This is becoming long and drawn out but the coaching decisions on the Charge and lack of DPS experience seems to be hurting them a lot this meta.

Another reason I would say the Charge are being rated so low is because the Valiant are being rated so high. High as in people are pulling them out of the trash and readding them to there power rankings. While the Charge are slightly underperforming the Valiant are overperforming at a large scale in comparison to there expectations. I personally left the Valiant out of my power rankings altogether. So I feel like the views of these teams are slanted a little based on expectations and results. Even though both teams haven't won a game yet.

The Chengdu Zone. You Chengdu it. Etc etc etc. Everyone is raving about the former one trick team 3-0ing the Shanghai Dragons. I want to talk about the one thing slightly overlooked about the Hunters hot start. The support line, Mmonk and Nisha. This team has never looked more stable (or stable altogether) than they have now. And its very apparent the support line has a lot to do about it. They provide a pillar of strength for a team known for making extreme decisions. Stable backline, good ult economy. I feel like there allowing to the Hunters to point the "use everything kill everything" gun not just accurately but efficiently. I don't mean this as an insult to Ga9a but I feel like the support line is so strong right now that they could be getting the same value with Ameng starting at Main Tank. And Ameng is real downgrade in comparison to Ga9a. Watch out for the Hunters as the season continues. These supports mite actually guide players like Leave, Jinmu, and Elsa to the promise land.

Dallas Fuel

I believe the general opinion of Sp9rk1e has not been very accurate since last season. He does excel on heroes like Doomfist and Genji but he also players heroes like Pharah, Tracer, and Echo. A lot of problems the Paris Eternal had toward the end of the season revolved around Sp9rk1e being the Tracer and the Echo player during a Tracer and Echo meta which meant Xzi had to fill next to him and it didn't go very well for that meta. Now that the meta has changed slightly and the coachings are adjusting around Doha next to him it looks like Sp9k1e has more room to express his dominance as a DPS. Any value and positives the Fuel are gaining so far this season are from Sp9k1e playing the DPS role at a disadvantage vs other teams. Last season the Eternal tried to have Sp9k1e mirror warpath Zarya god Decay on an elimination map to no prevail. But this season I don't believe Sp9k1e will let another match get that far out of his grasp while he's alive on a DPS hero.

Being Old and A Pro Overwatch Player

What happens when you've played a few years of OWL and your worth has naturally gone up? What happens when at the same time teams are trying to cut cost and sign cheaper players? You sit at home, lie about do the streamer grind, and watch minimum rookies underperform at the highest level of Overwatch. Agilies took a pay cut to go back to the Valiant only for the Valiant to move to China. No way Linkzr took more than league minimum to play on Vancouver. China mite be paying out more then NA but players like Kai and Shax had to have taken no other offers available discounts. Only team that made any kind of splash for veterans was the Shock by signing Nero, Glister, and FDgod. They also signed Twilight last year. The difference is they sign at the minimum with the expectations of higher payouts from tournament winnings. Soon was cut from Boston for Visa issues instead of being held onto until he was ready. Players are in desperate need of more protection. Many players are moving over to Riot owned Valorant for strictly the career safety net it provides. CSGO and League careers have traditionally been much longer on average than Overwatch careers. Valorant is a CSGO like game owned by the makers of League of Legends. A combination of 2 of the longest running esports. One of the biggest things holding OWL back is the backhanded business model of spending less money to make more instead of winning to make more. If you know anything about IRL sports basically the majority of OWL are just the Florida Marlins, or Philadelphia 76ers, or Jacksonville Jaguars. Purposely putting out poor rosters and making money off of existing in there leagues.

Rogue Going Rogue

One of the greatest overall career disappointments in pre OWL Overwatch history. This team was one of the dominate teams of the pre OWL era. Korea had Lunatic-Hai and Runaway. NA had Envyus (a famously EU team). And EU had Rogue. Runaway was the underdog, Lunatic-Hai was the king, Envyus was the king slayer, but Rogue was the triple DPS ego maniacs of what Overwatch could of been. OWL gave us goats. Rogue tried to give us Tracer, Genji, and Soldier 76 at the same time. Winz (the Lucio player for Rogue) would famously screenshot and tweet from the payload during official matches. Nicogdh (gdh stands for god hand) would swap between Genji and Dva. AKM player Soldier 76, Pharah, and Dva up until he refused to play Dva and forced Nicogdh to play Dva. Soon played the Tracer, the Tracer, and sometimes the Tracer. This team also had Unkoe on Zen.

I can't believe and OWL org didn't want this group of players to represent them....

Nicogdh has famously just talked, talked too honestly, and too much. I personally like Nicogdh as a person but he does talk, a lot. Or the fact someone added gdh to end of there player name and well Nicogdh and people around him went a little crazy about it in a negative way. Honestly that has to be one most respectful things you can do. His gdh is the godliness standard for mechanics. People have harassed him in the past, he has been knocked for that, but the dude also harasses others and assumes its equivalent. This man is extremely hard to attach to a brand with sponsors. Or just to a team altogether and still have his teammates trust him.

Unkue is honestly known to be a little trolly and toxic in match making. He had some "strong" opinions in OWL and toward the end of his OWL career but he wasn't too problematic. He always seemed like he had a negative mindset.

Winz was just aggressive in a good way at first but it started to become negative when Rogue started losing and stopped being able to play pro. The payload tweets became attacks on teams and other players. One could say these players cared about each other so much they refused to let others talk badly about them. But they have notoriously been negative publicly and showed there ass a majority of the time in many situations.

Which brings me to Soon and AKM. The founders of the "no talk can't be problematic" club. They paved the way for future generations of DPS talents to have viable career options because they learned to never talk shit, never get involved in drama, and separate there private life from there careers. Its very easy to sign players like Soon and AKM and not have problems. Honestly the only problem is the baggage of ex teammates.

Conclusion

Sorry this is kind of off the wall, not very concise, and not in a format I prefer. I need to start proof reading things and building easier to read article like stuff. I just got inspired with teams topics tonight and wanted to kick them out in my limited free time. Sorry I couldn't bring up more research for the Rogue stuff. but Nicogdh does have a long list of just random statements and comments. I do understand right now that the French community is being harassed right now and I do want to stress a bit of self defense of those players who speak publicly about it. Not everything comes out right all the time there just trying to express how they feel during this trying time for them and there fellow community members. They just want people to stop harassing them in game, online, and in life.

another fall. a slightly bigger one. that resulted in a sitting kyungsoo on the ground, clothes covered in dust and dirt with an abandoned bike humming sadly in the background.

he urges the other male to take a seat on the second step of the stairs as he jogs inside the garage to grab the first-aid kit. it doesn’t take long for jaewon to find it, the harsh contrast of angry red and the boring greys make it easy for him as he shakes his head dismissively. he’s more worried than annoyed — even though it might seem like to be in the opposite way.

“i’m banning you from riding your bike if you’re not careful enough…” he mutters as he takes the empty space that was left for him on purpose, carefully tugging kyungsoo’s sweater up enough so he has a clear view of the wound. it’s not horrible, but it definitely needs to treated.

“you can choose whichever you like the most.” no, jaewon is not ashamed of keeping colorful band-aids adorned with cartoon characters in the kit that were probably made for kids under 14, whilst he’s pressing the cotton pad soaked with some disinfectant over the wound after he’s cleaned it up a little bit. “if it comes off then come see me again and i’ll give you a new one. if you want to.” 

he can count on two hands all the crashes he’s had. according to a certain mechanic, that’s two hands too many, but kyungsoo figures it’s better than not having any hands at all. the scattered scrapes and blooming bruises weren’t even really his fault this time. these were all thanks to a faceless, impatient driver who refused to drive any slower than twice the speed limit. but, all the same, kyungsoo finds himself sheepishly sat outside a now familiar garage, picking at loose threads in the sleeve of his sweater. 

like a child at the doctor’s office, he leafs through the plasters in the tin while jaewon fusses over the scratches. they don’t hurt much--at least, not until they’re poked at with disinfectant--and kyungsoo tries to communicate as much by picking out a band-aid with rilakkuma’s face stamped across it. “you can’t ban me from riding my own bike,” he muses quietly with a small smile playing at the corners of his lips, though he knows jaewon only means well. (he always has done, even from the first time kyungsoo dragged his sorry bike into the shop.) 

“i feel like i should start payin’ you for these, considering how many of ‘em i’ve used so far.” with a soft snort, he turns back to the tin of band-aids and plucks out one with a crong-and-hamburgers pattern. “but yeah, i’ll.. i’ll be more careful. sorry for botherin’ you again.”
