Look man I just think it’s a shame that Lon Chaney Jr’s horror film debut usually gets cut from the roster.
#also I understand this is the rare pair of all rare pairs#but god I’m fascinated by the potential dynamic of Dan McCormick (the man-made monster) and Frankenstein’s creature#because their fascinating inversions of each other?#like Dan is this good hearted circus performer who’s taken the various tragedies of his life in stride#(from his backstory of being an abused orphan to right when the audience meet him when he’s the sole survivor of a horrific bus crash)#only to get his mind melted when some mad scientist figures out that Dan’s apparently immune to any sort of damage by electric shock#who then takes advantage of said mind-melt to make him kill the only doctor who might have saved him and to turn himself over to the police#go through the entire trial unable to defend himself and then be PUT TO THE ELECTRIC CHAIR#walk out now that he’s juiced up enough on electricity to function#stumble through the woods killing and terrorizing people because he’s physically incapable of touching anything#kill the mad scientist behind it all and then kill himself by draining all the electricity from his body#which all seems just kinda like excellent set up for SOMETHING with the creature#if only because with the creature’s modern electricity thing pairing nicely#with Guy who needs to be charged with deadly amounts of electricity to function#like I don’t have coherent thoughts but it feels like it’s got so many fun opportunities.#my art#man-made monster#universal horror#lon chaney

'Odd Man Out' – Irish noir on Max and Criterion Channel
Odd Man Out (1947) has been called Carol Reed’s first masterpiece, and with good reason. His first film after World War II is drenched in a darkness (both visually and dramatically) and a sense of isolation and doom. It also made a star of James Mason, who plays the IRA leader who leads a bank robbery gone wrong. Wounded and alone, he stumbles through Belfast at night as the police and his mates…

Pre-Exile Jews Part 1: Women's Hair
back in april @mylight-png made a post expressing a desire to learn about small details of "ancient Judean" life such as clothes, jewelry, hair, etc. and I've found the idea of addressing what I, as a Jewish archaeologist, could in that post intriguing. these types of questions are some of the most interesting, but also the most challenging, for archaeology.
Defining "ancient Judeans"
In this, I'm looking for ancient Judeans as defined by Light's quote "I wish to know what traditional, pre-occupation, pre-exile Jewish life was like." which I'm taking as before the babylonian diaspora in 586 BCE, because anything after that date is post-diaspora, and while there were occupations before 586 BCE, I want to be able to give some answers.
Women's Hair
The only definitive visual depiction of Judean women I could find came from the Lachish Relief, a wall decoration in Sennacherib's Southwest Palace in Nineveh, which is in modern-day Iraq. It depicts the outcome of the siege of Lachish in 701 BCE, where the Assyrians sacked the Judean city as a part of Sennacherib's campaigns into Israel and Judah (the same campaign that led to the diaspora of the 'ten lost tribes')
In the relief, women are displayed as wearing long headscarves (below) so unfortunately this tells us little about their hair (in the relief, children are shown as miniaturized adults, so we also learn nothing about girls hair from the relief).
Tumblr media
(Image credit: Amanda Borschel-Dan/Times of Israel)
Hope for learning anything about women's hair isn't lost though, thanks to a type of artifact called a Judean Pillar Figurine (or JPF's for short). These figurines are split into two groups: those using well detailed molds, and handmade, more abstract pieces.
Tumblr media
(Deutsch, 2022)
Hundreds of JPF's have been found, with over 50% of them coming from the Jerusalem area and all dating to the 9th-6th centuries BCE, which is the time period we're looking for. The primary issue is that we don't know what exactly they were used for, or who they represent. They could be depictions of Judean women, but it's also likely that they are depictions of Ashera, a local fertility deity that was worshiped alongside El/Hashem in domestic settings (religion in pre-diaspora Israel and Judah is messy, I should probably do one of these about it), and it's even been theorized that they are children's toys. The two types may even be used differently, we just don't know. So while I'm going to show the JPF hairstyles, keep in mind that these may not be the actual hairstyles Judean women wore.
The mold-made faces consistently have "voluminous cheek- or chin-length hair framing a face with full cheeks, a mouth that may smile slightly, a chin, nose, and almond-shaped eyes." (Ben-Shlomo and McCormick 2021, 27, image below from the same, 29).
Tumblr media
This hairstyle is seen in the area as early as the 12th century BCE, on an ivory flask "bottle figure" from Lachish, which is pre-Israelite, so this hairstyle has been in the region for a while. (Niditch 2008, 44), and may resemble an Egyptian wig in its form, owing to Egypt's cultural influence over Canaanite and early Israelite culture (Deutsch 2022).
This consistency and longevity in the features is also used as an argument that they represent a single individual (again, Ashera), rather than this hairstyle being ubiquitous among Judean women.
Among the handmade, pinched face JPF's, there is naturally more variety, and a possible hairstyle can be seen in them from Tell en-Nasbeh. Some of these handmade JPF's have a headband that has two side locks coming from underneath it (below), and while none displayed side locks without a headband, the reverse isn't true, though exceptionally rare (2 of the 37 JPF's found had a headband without hair).
Tumblr media
(Ben-Shlomo and McCormick 2021, 29)
Conclusion
Due to the undetermined nature of the JPFs, and the lack of other evidence at the moment, it's impossible to definitively say "this is how ancient Judean women styled their hair." That being said, I hope I've presented some current ideas from my field that are interesting, and shed a little light on such an ephemeral topic.
TLDR: I couldn't find much, but there is ongoing research into this topic in archaeology.

The House will vote on Tuesday on a resolution introduced on Monday by House Republicans rejecting claims that Israel is racist or an apartheid state, condemning antisemitism and declaring support for Israel.
While the text of the legislation itself does not mention Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) by name, the brief, eight-line resolution comes in response to comments over the weekend by the congresswoman describing Israel as a “racist state.”
The resolution was introduced by Reps. August Pfluger (R-TX), alongside the two Jewish Republicans in the House, Reps. David Kustoff (R-TN) and Max Miller (R-OH). House Republican leadership fast-tracked the legislation to a vote on Tuesday, ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
In statements on the legislation, its sponsors specifically called out Jayapal and other Democrats critical of Israel.
“Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar’s repeated comments denigrating Israel are unacceptable and disgusting,” Pfluger said in a statement. “I am proud to introduce this resolution ensuring all Americans know where their Representatives stand when it comes to supporting Israel and our Jewish communities.”
Kustoff called Jayapal’s comments “repulsive and repugnant” with “no place in the hall of Congress, nor in our national conversation.”
Miller, who sponsored the legislation earlier this year that expelled Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that “Congresswoman Jayapal can try to take back her comments, but her intent was crystal clear—and absolutely deplorable… There is no place for this type of rhetoric in the House.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the legislation comes “in light of the recent rise in anti-Semitic rhetoric we’ve seen from leading figures in the Democrat Party,” without referencing Jayapal, and noted that he’s “proud to schedule this bill ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit.”
The resolution is expected  to receive wide bipartisan support. Democratic leaders in the House quickly distanced themselves from Jayapal’s comment. On Monday, 43 House Democrats joined a statement led by pro-Israel Jewish Democrats disavowing Jayapal’s comments and declaring support for Israel.
Signatories to that statement include nine members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which Jayapal leads: Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), Frederica Wilson (D-FL), Darren Soto (D-FL), Dan Goldman (D-NY), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Mike Levin (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Grace Napolitano (D-CA). Additional progressive lawmakers have also distanced themselves from Jayapal’s remarks.
At the same time, some on the left have dismissed the legislation.
“This is not a pro-Israel resolution. It’s a cynical ploy so that Republicans can continue to waive their arms and yell about Israel and antisemitism while not doing anything to make life better for Israelis, much less even acknowledging that Palestinians exist,” Americans for Peace Now CEO Hadar Susskind said in a tweet. “It’s garbage.”
J Street, which endorsed Jayapal, did not respond to a request for comment on how or whether it was advising members to vote on the resolution.
On Monday, Jayapal tweeted out excerpts from a New York Times op-ed by columnist Michelle Goldberg that derided the backlash to her initial comments as a “hysterical overreaction.”
“The rush to condemn her offhand remarks is […] about raising the political price of speaking about Israel forthrightly. […],” the excerpt that Jayapal tweeted read. “It’s easier for Israel’s most stalwart boosters to harp on a critic’s slight misstatement.”

23 Republican Senators & 124 Congressmen signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court asking for a 50 state ban on mifepristone, a drug safer than tylenol that is standard treatment for abortion & miscarriages, "due to safety concerns". The brief DARES to argue that banning the life saving drug would save women from 'reproductive control'. (x) These 147 people would rather have women die of sepsis than let women control their own bodies. If your representatives are on this list, call them and tell their office you will be voting against them in the next election because they asked SCOTUS to throw the US medical drug system into chaos at the cost of American lives.

22 Democrats vote to censure Tlaib over Israel criticism
Twenty-two Democrats on Tuesday voted to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (R-Mich.) for her criticism of Israel following Hamas’s deadly attack last month.
The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.), accused Tlaib of “promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.” It also references her use over the weekend of the controversial phrase “from the river to the sea,” which is considered by many to be antisemitic.
Democratic leadership earlier in the day urged members to vote for a motion to kill the censure resolution and the party largely stuck together, with only one Democrat voting to advance it.
Many defended Tlaib’s right to make the controversial comments, citing the First Amendment, despite disagreeing with her words.
But on the final vote, 22 of Tlaib’s colleagues opted to reprimand her.
“We are at an exceedingly perilous moment, when emotions and intentions are on a razor’s edge. I believe that Members of Congress should be free to express their opinions, no matter how distasteful they may be. I also believe they have a duty to express the values and priorities of their districts,” Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) said of his vote to censure Tlaib.
He added, “I recognize this censure resolution is not a perfect resolution in its language or form, but unfortunately it is the only vehicle available to formally rebuke the dangerous disinformation and aspersions that Rep. Tlaib continues to use and defend. I feel that I have no other recourse but to vote to censure her.”
Here are the Democrats who voted in favor of the censure resolution:
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.)
Rep. Jim Costa (D-Calif.)
Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.)
Rep. Don Davis (D-N.C.)
Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.)
Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine)
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.)
Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio)
Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.)
Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.)
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.)
Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.)
Rep. Chris Pappas (D-N.H.)
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.)
Rep. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.)
Rep. Kim Schrier (D-Wash.)
Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.)
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.)
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.)
In addition to the Democrats who bucked their party, four Republicans voted against the censure: Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), John Duarte (R-Calif.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.).

TRUE CRIME - PT. 1
Ricky McCormick Cypher
My first True Crime blog post will be on the Ricky McCormick Cypher.
If you don’t know what a cypher is, here is a definition; A cypher is a message written in a secret code; a secret or disguised way of writing; a code.
This case is somewhat of a cold case, and at first the case was classified as a homicide, but was later determined otherwise.
Ricky McCormick was a high school dropout who had held multiple addresses in the Greater St. Louis area, living intermittently with his elderly mother. According to a 1999 article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, McCormick suffered from chronic heart and lung problems. He was not married, but had fathered at least four children. He had a criminal record, and had previously served 11 months of a three-year sentence for statutory rape. At the time of his death, he was 41 years old, unemployed, and receiving disability welfare payments.
McCormick's body was found on June 30, 1999, in a cornfield near West Alton, Missouri by a woman driving along a field road near Route 367. The reason he was 15 miles (24 km) away from his then-current address is another mystery, as he did not own a car and the area was not served by public transportation. Though the body had already somewhat decomposed, authorities used fingerprints to identify McCormick. There was no indication that anyone had a motive to kill McCormick and no one had reported him missing. As such, the authorities initially ruled out homicide; however, no cause of death was officially determined at the time. McCormick was last seen alive five days earlier, on June 25, 1999, getting a checkup at St. Louis's now-defunct Forest Park Hospital.
The two notes found in McCormick's pockets are written in an unknown code consisting of "a jumble of letters and numbers occasionally set off with parentheses" and are believed by the FBI to possibly lead to those responsible for the killing. Dan Olson, chief of the FBI's Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit, said, illustrating the significance of the notes, "Breaking the code could reveal the victim's whereabouts before his death and could lead to the solution of a homicide." Attempts by both the FBI's Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU) and the American Cryptogram Association failed to decipher their meaning, and Ricky McCormick's encrypted notes are currently listed as one of CRRU's top unsolved cases, with McCormick's killer yet to be identified. According to members of McCormick's family, Ricky had used encrypted notes as a boy, but none of them knew how to read the code.
To this day, the code has yet to be deciphered. Yet, there is speculation on the internet as to what the note reads as.
I found this post on Reddit, made by u/TheLinguistGamer; on the r/UnresolvedMysteries subreddit. Here is their attempt at figuring out what it meant.
Thank you for reading! I used some of this information from Wikipedia, and the police reports. I will link them below.
