MLA Project initial research around desire lines.

Desire lines / paths are created by people who to get to a destination via a shorter route like a short cut. However the path isn’t usually an official one like a tarmac path for instance. The reason why I want to base my project on them is due to me having a weird obsession with them. Due to the fact that why do people use this shortcut and where does it go. So I wanted to do some research into them to find out a little bit more. 

“Desire lines tell us about the endless human desire to have choice

Professor Andrew Furman” I found this quote interesting telling us that humans don’t always want to stick to the paths which planners have built to use. The desire the urge to go a slightly different way to not only make the journey shorter but maybe also make the journey more interesting. You may find a new place to go visit to relax or find a new shop. Once researching to find articles about desire lines I came across a reddit thread where people over the world post photos of desire lines they come across whilst out and about. 

I realised It isn’t just me with the fascination around them. Seeing different ones in different countries was interesting seeing the different landscapes differences between paths. Here are a few examples of my own imagery of some I’ve come across in the last couple weeks.  

I started to have look if I could find any examples of how desire lines help urban planners. I came across this article on the guardian where Riccardo Marini takes them seriously. “Somebody has spent a fortune putting in granite steps with a piece of landscape next to it, and people have gone up the slope because their brain tells them that’s the quickest way to do it, even if they get muddy,” he says. “Desire lines present evidence about movement, which is important.” 

Thats why planners really need to see where people want to walk so that they can build paths on top of desire lines. This is exactly what Michigan state university did. So instead of building paths for the students to use they didn't build any and let them walk to see where the desire lines would appear. 

Here is an image of there campus showing no built pavements / paths just desire lines. Which the planners have now used to build paths on top which is effective in using the footfall as an experiment. 

I was reading another article about desire lines and I came across this one by Sherwood Forest. A recently opened visitors centre has created some desire lines which has damaged some newly planted crops have been planted in a flower bed. So volunteers have started to put in some low bollards which will stop people from creating desire lines as short cuts over newly planted flower beds. 

Showing that desire lines can be a pain and cause issues. Although that does make me think maybe they need to rethink their paths and take into consideration of the footfall of visitors..... I came across some examples of how councils have tried to close desire lines. When I feel like they should view them and rethink the desire of there current pathways or make these into ones.

As well as just researching about desire lines I wanted to widen my research and look at some slightly different man made paths. In Middle Eastern and Europe ancient sunken paths called Holloway’s represent a extreme version of a desire line. Which have formed over thousands of years. Over the years they start to look like tunnels as they are sunken into the ground into a pathway. They usually show heavy use of vehicles and are usually soft ground. Which causes the deep sides of the pathway. Here is an example.
