Assassin, until the first moment
by April Lightwood
Just as Magnus was about to let his knife sink into the skin of the other man, the duke moved his eyelids. The assassin froze and a few seconds later he was staring into the now open eyes of Alexander Lightwood. Magnus almost expected to see fear in the duke’s eyes, but this was not the case. He could see a challenging glow instead.
The assassin realised that the duke understood the situation immediately, and they both stared into the eyes of the other... The duke leaned his head back, pressed himself further into the pillow beneath him and offered his throat to Magnus. The sharp blade sank into the soft skin slightly the blood welled instantly from a small cut. Magnus looked almost terrified at the red runlet which ran down over the duke’s skin into the white pillow. Magnus couldn’t move. What was wrong with him? He had to fulfil his mission but something was stopping him, making him hesitate.
“Do it”, the duke demanded and the dark husky voice sent shivers down Magnus’ spine.
“What are you waiting for? Do it.”

Alec held up his hand to say goodbye to the crowd, and just before he went to leave the stage, Magnus gave him a hug and whispered in his ear. “You were great.”
“You were, too.”
“Oh, I know.” He winked a glittery eye.
Oh, Alec liked him a lot.
Among the Shadows opens for Magnus Bane and the Spiral Labyrinth on tour and Alec has a small, tiny crush that doesn't get smaller when Magnus suggests they perform a song together on stage.

Oblivion
Magnus looks over the rim of his cocktail glass at the people enjoying the beach and the promenade.
It's been ages since he was last here. Maybe 50 years? Something like that. He remembers dancing with ladies who had just gotten rid of their corsets, slowly showing their footwear as a foretaste of what was still to come.
God, he had loved that era. Fashion still hid more than it revealed, and nonetheless, change was palpable in the air. The mundane war was barely on the horizon, women were fighting for their right to vote.
The rest is a little blurred in Magnus' memory. But he's used to it. He can remember faces well; names, not so much. But it's not as if the mundanes that he met, back when he was here last, are all still alive. And in a few decades, none of them will be. That's the inevitable end of everything under the sun, save vampires and warlocks. Even the seelies aren't immortal, though one might forget that, as long-living as they are.
Magnus holds tightly only onto very few memories, all pinned down with objects in a wooden box, like butterflies in a showcase that is only meant for his eyes. It hasn't been that long since he added a new object, or maybe it has. What does time even mean if you're living on while those you love are ripped from your hands by violence or the cruelty of age?
No, Magnus doesn't want to think of his losses, about how he barely stitched his heart together after the last, how he lost himself in alcohol and warm bodies. How he still does.
Magnus enjoys the sight of men and women in semi-revealing swimwear. This decade for sure has its perks as well. And people are getting bolder despite the stuffy old men and women still trying to hold up old 'values'.
He takes another sip from his cocktail and breathes in the fresh breeze. He should come more often, not every half century or so.
Magnus puts money on the table and strolls down the promenade. As much as he detests war, he's kinda thankful for the positive image-swing that the Korean War brought towards the Asian-American community. Mingling with white mundanes had always been possible, but there had been times when Magnus decided only to party with downworlders. Not that any racist thug could have done him any harm, but showing his magic was even more dangerous than being an Asian man in 20th century North America.
Magnus shakes his head to erase his thoughts. He's here to have fun. He smiles at a few ladies, secretly checks out some men, fixes his gaze on those who understand the signs. But he has time on his hands, and the sun is just setting, not even touching the horizon. There's no rush to pick someone up for the night.
He walks and walks, watches people, and enjoys himself. "Amulets! Powerful amulets," a female vendor shouts when he reaches the end of the promenade. He laughs to himself and shakes his head. Mundanes are so gullible, paying good money for ineffective trinkets.
The woman selling them stands next to the display talking to a customer. Magnus can't see her face. She's dressed in a colourful sarong, and wearing her beautiful dark hair loose, only her hair at the front held back by an ancient-looking hair slide.
Magnus lets his eyes travel down her enticing rear end and over her exposed calves. His eyes widen when his gaze reaches her ankles.
He has seen them before, peeled off stockings from them as he kissed the tender skin right where a naevus looking like a dragon marked her ankle as unique and, therefore, added her to the list of lovers that didn't fully disappear from Magnus' memory.
The name eludes him, but not the surrounding in which he saw this body last, nor the other clothes he ran his hands over and shoved out of the way the very first time they made love. A summer fling, decades ago, nothing more. And here she is, not aged a single day if her well-defined arms and legs are anything to go by.
Magnus passes her and studies the display. These amulets are indeed the real deal, and from so close, he can feel the gentle touch of magic lingering in them. He smiles. The magic feels warm and inviting. He already knows that this woman is a warlock to his liking.
He turns his head and smiles at her. Recognition flickers over her features as she stutters a goodbye to her customer. When the mundane is gone, Magnus' mouth forms the name he hasn't spoken for a very long time. It rolls easily off his tongue. "Hello, Dorothea."
Her eyes glimmer in the evening sun. "Magnus. I didn't know…"
"Neither did I," he chuckles. "We hid our true selves very well."
"Indeed," she says and gives him a wide smile. "You're looking good."
"I could say the same. But selling amulets at the seafront? Really?"
Dot shrugs her shoulders. "Why not? Fresh air, mostly happy people… There are worse places to be."
Magnus nods in agreement. "Do you fancy a beach dinner with me? One that suits our kind better than the one I put together all those years ago?"
Dot raises her eyebrows and smirks. "Right now, I'm looking more for a dancing partner than anything else." Magnus can see the sadness behind the well-crafted mask, but he doesn't comment on it. He doesn't want to talk about what brought him back here either.
"I guess that can be arranged, my dear." He takes her hand and presses a soft kiss to it. He straightens and squeezes her hand. "The hotel I'm staying at has an excellent ballroom."
Dot's smile widens and the sorrow gives way to joy. Magnus may not be able to take the pain of loss away, but he can give his new, old friend a distraction. And sometimes, making someone forget is the greatest gift of all.

Living to Survive
Writer’s Month 2020 Day Twenty-One
Read on AO3
When you’ve successfully and significantly cheated death three times, or is it four now she can’t even remember, reacclimating to life as it was before isn’t easy.
Dorothea Rollins has become an expert at it though. She’s survived the Circle, Valentine and his little demon spawn son and come back from it each time with a renewed sense of survival flowing through her veins. She’s become a survivor in the truest sense of the word just living to survive.
As strong as she is though she needs support. Her community pulls through, most specifically and especially Catarina Loss.
They’ve known each other for years frequently finding themselves in the same cities over the centuries and spending quite a bit of time together during her and Magnus’ brief relationship, but they’ve never been exceedingly close. They’ve been acquaintances, colleagues even at best.
All that changes after her face to face showdown with Jonathan, Sebastian whatever he calls himself. She survives staying behind to protect Clary and Jace, but just barely immediately going into hiding so the little crispy bastard son of Valentine doesn’t try to track her down and finish the job.
She runs first to the old bookstore Eliot Nourse once owned simply to breathe and heal her wounds with any potions still floating around in the abandoned shop. She knows she can’t stay long though sooner or later someone will buy the place and she’ll have to vacate the premises and as much as she’d like to do this alone, to just wash her hands of everything she knows that’s not realistic.
She considers going to Magnus first, but everything has been tense between them since her aborted drunken attempt to kiss him that frankly had left her more embarrassed than anything else. Mix that tenseness with the fact that she knows Magnus will no doubt be tangled up in the fight against Jonathan because of his earth-shattering love for Alec and his constant dedication to his people rules him out.
She thinks of other friends, either gone or too far away to bother and then she thinks of Catarina. When she knocks on her door she’s not sure what to expect, the little girl, Madzie, that had called her pretty when she’d been drained of every bit of her life force is certainly not it.
She stares up at her with wide eyes a shy smile on her face as she hides half behind the door until Catarina steps up behind her.
“Madz what did I tell you about just answering the door,” she says before looking up and spotting Dot. She gives her a sad smile before opening the door wide. “Come on in.”
She lets her in her home and not just for a meal and a place to sleep for the night, but indefinitely. Catarina gets swept up in the fight eventually but only when her help is requested expressly and exclusively from Magnus or Alec. She leaves Dot out of it though every time, doesn’t even mention that she’s staying there or that she’s alive just as Dot had requested.
Madzie even keeps quiet, choosing to think of it like a game, never even mentioning Dot’s existence to Magnus or Alec who she loves whispering little secrets to. Dot hears the stories of everything going on outside, Valentine dies a bloody deserved death, Lilith goes topside, Clary goes missing, Magnus loses his magic, gets it back, goes to Edom, Alec decides Jonathan’s apocalypse can wait in favor of saving Magnus and Dot finds herself respecting him more and more every day.
Catarina is her lifeline, her constant through all this. The two growing closer than ever before in a few months’ time. Madzie becomes her little co-conspirator brightening her days when nothing else seems to be able to.
Then, Jonathan dies and for a moment the world outside is a little safer, a little brighter.
But Dot isn’t ready to go back out in yet. Catarina tries with all her might to get Dot to go to the wedding with her, but she turns her down. She plays it off as not wanting to steal any spotlight making a big ‘guess what I’m not dead!’ reveal to everyone and the fact that nobody wants to go to an exes wedding.
And while those things are both true, the truer sense is she’s just not ready to be back in the swing of things yet.
Months pass and she finds herself easing a little bit more every day all thanks to Cat and Madzie. It’s baby steps of course, trips to the park and for dinner at the little Vietnamese restaurant around the corner every Tuesday, but eventually it’s bigger things.
Catarina makes her feel safe, Madzie makes her smile and she starts thinking about living again, really living.
Soon enough she is. She reunites with friends including a memory returned Clary. The pair finding a closeness they never really had before growing now that they’ve both survived some pretty horrendous things.
She finds comfort in new bonds, finally letting go of her past feelings for Magnus and getting to know Alec, who’s actually pretty great. But none of it compares to what she feels with Cat and Madzie, she can’t imagine life without them now.
It’s been over a year when she realizes just what that means. Cat is motoring around the kitchen juggling making breakfast for Madzie, organizing a sleepover weekend with Magnus and Alec and writing down her shifts for the next two weeks on the calendar on the fridge simultaneously, refusing Dot’s offered helped when she asks. So Dot just watches her, Madzie sitting to her side coloring and that’s when it hits her.
She loves her. She loves them. In such a short time they’ve become her family, the first real family she thinks she’s ever had.
It’s surprises her, even though it really shouldn’t and when Madzie nudges her and slides the picture she’s been coloring over it all settles into place in her heart easily. It’s Madzie standing on Alec’s shoulders with Magnus holding his hand, Catarina reaching up holding her hand and next to Cat is Dot clasping hands with Cat’s free one. It says all their names at the top Uncle Magnus, Uncle Alec, Mommy, Madzie and Dot-Dot, as she’s grown to calling her and underneath it all the word family is written in bright rainbow colors.
She smiles and Madzie just carrying on like she hasn’t just made Dot’s day, week, life maybe even.
It’s three nights later while sitting on the couch kicking back with virgin margaritas, Madzie off to her uncles for the weekend, when Dot finally decides to make a move after her stark revelation the other morning. When her lips meet Cat’s and Cat eagerly responds it feels like coming home, feels like for the first time since the day Clary turned eighteen she’s not just surviving, she’s living.
“I didn’t want to rush you, but damn it’s about time,” Catarina chuckles when they finally pull back.
Dot laughs, pure joy and just leans right back in.

Do you think magnus has ever had panic attacks? how do you think alec or his friends (like raphael or cat or ragnor) would react/help?
I'm pretty sure he has, actually. i mean its pretty much impossible not to, with such a long live he's lived and all the trauma he's gone through. we got a glimpse of the kinds of nightmares he has, all the guilt he feels, and the unbearable pressure on his shoulders. he's strong af, but everyone breaks down, and there are parts of him that are still raw, and fragile sometimes
i imagine he's the type that absolutely tries to hide them, the type that feels them coming and is all like "excuse me" and manages to hold it back for exactly the time needed to get somewhere he can hide and break down. but his friends and family are attentive, and they know him, and after a while they start to recognize the signs that Magnus went away to have a panic attack/is about to have one
as for how they react...
Cat: cat is a medical professional, so i imagine she knows the best procedures. keep a distance, count the breaths, talk to him in a soothing voice, walk him through calming down, ask him about the things around him so he can regain his surroundings, etc. then, once he's back to breathing, she slowly comes towards him, asks if she can touch him, and when he says yes, strokes his hair and kisses his forehead. she then goes back and tells everyone Magnus had an emergency, takes him home (even if it takes some convincing to make him agree to leave), and stays the night with him, cuddling, talking about it, or providing a distraction
Ragnor: ragnor is probably a more awkward version of cat. The good thing about him is that he always keeps his cool and acts like whatever's happening is natural, and it's so absurd that Magnus starts laughing waterly and feels a little more at ease, because he's not making a huge fuss. He's like "oh dear, okay, Magnus, you're okay, let's calm down, yeah? breathe with me, in, out... yeah, see, that's not so hard" and it's kind of like ???? why are you so matter of fact about this??, but in a good way. then he probably conjures up Magnus some tea, and either portals him home, or goes back with him and stays by his side, sneakingly stealing the attention with crazy stories so people don't notice Magnus is off
Dot: Dot usually holds his hand, tells him that hes alright, might cheat sometimes by using magic to calm him down a little bit. Then once he's a little calmer, she probably serves as a pretty good distraction, talking to him about other things, playing music, allowing him to just forget until he's ready to open up and tell her what happened
Raphael: Raphael probably struggles a little, because Magnus is his father figure, and it's always a little earth shattering to see your parents breaking down. also, he has this image of himself as someone who struggles to express his feelings because hes not good at verbalizing them (plus autism frequently means his intentions are mistaken by people who don't know him) even if, actually, he's pretty damn good at showing Magnus that he cares. he worries so much about getting him to be okay it's painful, counting his breaths, cupping his face, Magnus, look at me, it's okay, you're okay, hugging him. Magnus might be scared but he'd never lash out at Raphael, so it works. then once Magnus has calmed down Raphael is just speeding around trying to get things for him. here's some water. here's food. can you portal home? I'll make you some food. like he needs to feel useful and also the latino instincts are always person sad = feed them. so he makes Magnus some soup, recipe of his mum that Magnus taught him especially for moments like these, makes him drink water and gets him blankets (gotta be toasty). usually Magnus ends up sleeping, but when he wakes up, Raphael is still there, probably cleaning his loft worriedly because he's like that, but as soon as magnus opens his eyes he's back at his side. are you alright? tell me what happened. and he listens to Magnus very attentively, free of judgement, and it's very heartwarming and reminds Magnus that Raphael cares about him so deeply, that he's not alone
Alec: he can probably never pretend for too long with alec when they arent home because Alec is always like "gotta keep tabs on my husband at all times" so if he disappears alec is immediately searching for him. he usually goes straight for the hug, and it's good, because he's so Big and can envelop Magnus like a cocoon if he wants, hiding him from the world and making him feel like, safe and sated. If sensory overload caused the attack it's particularly great, because it feels like a sensory deprivation chamber and he's just safe and with the right amount of pressure and touch, and Alec always feels nice. And he allows himself to cry on Alec's shoulder, and Alec whispers soothing things. Then Alec either takes him home and cuddles with him until he falls asleep and asks him about it the next day, or, if Magnus asks to go back, he goes with him. Alec understands the feeling of humiliation at having to leave an event because of something like this, and how sometimes, as a leader, or as a downworlder surrounded by shadowhunters, he can't without risking his position or the respect he gets. So he silently goes back with him, always with an appropriate excuse for their disappearance, no matter how long or sudden it was, and somehow even manages to be convincing enough that people dont think they left to fuck. he's a diplomat, after all. he guides Magnus through the rest of the event, making sure to avoid annoying people and to take the lead in conversations so Magnus doesnt have to strain himself emotionally too much. Then he takes Magnus home, helps him out of his clothes and makeup, cuddles with him until he falls asleep, and asks him about it the next day
i loved this ask, btw! It's interesting to think about how each of them would react to that situation and explore their dynamics and how each of them could be helpful. since each of them has a forte, depending on the situation they might call each other - raph, Magnus is too beaten up, can you get here and make some soup?, Alec, Magnus had a breakdown and he can't leave, would you come here?, Cat, we're worried, can you come and calm him down?, etc. Just give Magnus all the supporting network trying their hardest and playing their strengths to help him

None of It Was Accidental
(Read on AO3)
Dot tries, and mostly fails, not to let the pain show on her face in front of Jocelyn. Everything she’s done up to this point has been for the Shadowhunter - she barely slept since Jocelyn’s disappearance, working tirelessly to track her down while still fulfilling her promise of keeping Clary safe.
And now here she is. After allowing herself to be captured by Valentine to gain the access she needs to free Jocelyn, Dot knows that she isn’t going to make it back home with the woman she loves. Valentine’s experiments on her have done too much damage too quickly. She has just enough magic to drop the wards long enough to portal Jocelyn out. It’s just a matter of convincing Jocelyn to go when the time comes.
“You should’ve stayed away, Dorothea,” Jocelyn says, eyes wide and brimming with tears at the sight of the black veins spreading slowly but surely up Dot’s neck and across her face.
“You know I couldn’t do that, Jocelyn,” Dot says, shaking her head with a small, sad smile.
“I never should’ve let you get dragged into all this,” Jocelyn sighs.
Dot, against the seriousness of the situation, laughs. It sounds insane given the circumstances but she can’t help it.
“Drag me into this? Jocelyn, from the moment I met you, I started inserting myself into your life more and more. I put myself here, my dear.”
“If I hadn’t needed help hiding Clary and the cup-”
“I offered to help the moment Elliott and Magnus told me about you. And I knew you were a good person the moment we met. Since then I started visiting you more often, staying longer, lingering touches…”
Jocelyn says nothing but smiles slightly.
“Nothing was going to stop me from protecting you, Jocelyn. Not then, and certainly not now.”
“So every late-night drink I thought you were just having because you felt bad for me…” Jocelyn trails off.
“None of it was accidental,” Dot confirms.
“I know,” Jocelyn says, and this time it’s Dot who falls into silence. “I knew, even back then.”
“Then why didn’t you stop me?”
“Because I wanted you, too. I was always yours, Dorothea. I just… I don’t know. I didn’t realize how much I meant to you, not really.”
“Unfortunate that you have to find out this way,” Dot says. She can feel it now, even her words are coming with great strain and there’s not a lot of time left. Not for her, at least.
Dot closes the gap between them, gently placing her lips on Jocelyn’s, her hand coming up to cup the side of Jocelyn’s face. Dot feels Jocelyn’s hand come to rest on the small of her back, pulling her closer. Dot knows she should pull away, she knows they’re running out of time, but she can’t bring herself to end this moment any sooner than she absolutely has to.
When that moment comes Dot pulls herself back, slow and reluctant.
“I love you, Jocelyn. Take care of yourself, and Clary,” Dot takes a deep breath. “And I’m so sorry, I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“Forgive you for what? Dot, what’s-”
Dot drops the wards, and with what little magic she has left at the very fringes of her reach she summons a portal behind Jocelyn, reaching out to push her backward through it to safety. Dot barely has enough energy to keep it up until Jocelyn is fully through before her magic is completely wiped out and the portal closes.
Dot feels the poisoned veins spread and knows this is it, but she doesn’t care.
She did it. She wishes more than anything she could’ve followed, but as long as she got Jocelyn to safety that’s all that matters.
That’s all that ever mattered, she thinks with the smallest smile just as everything goes black.

Worlds Apart
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/mPvxW8I by cityofdownwardspirals “Happy birthday,” Magnus says as a conversation starter, trying to avoid awkward silences. Or also trying to avoid any spare time he has to stare at Alec’s now completely exposed chest. Somewhere between the dancefloor and the bar, his last button apparently gave up. The birthday hat he was wearing seems to have disappeared too, and somehow that little detail makes him look a lot more…like a lot. And yes, maybe Alec has the bluest eyes Magnus has ever seen and his raven hair sticks to his face in a ridiculously attractive way and Magnus is just a man and can't help but admire that. But at the end of the day, he is here for a reason. He is here to kill Alexander Lightwood. OR As the Inquisitor's son, Shadowhunter Magnus Bane has a reputation to live up to. When his dad gives him a special assignment that he is not allowed to talk to anyone about, he is determined to prove himself. SH 1x2 Coda-Fic: Appearances Can Be Deceiving
so uh, whoops? That ReWatch & Coda Writing thing last year didn't quite happen? BUT HEY. It's never too late. Or something like that.
HAVE SOME DOROTHEA 💜
#DotDeservedBetter
The Frays’ apartment was ruined.
That had been part of the plan, Dot knew, making sure there was nothing left for Valentine to track. She hoped it had been done because the plan was working.
She set up the glamour, ignored the way her body still ached, despite the healing. It'd linger, for awhile. She'd been used to working through that, years ago.
She knew she'd adjust again, soon enough.
She hated that she knew that.
And then there was Luke, at last...
Without Clary.
He looked at her with his cop face, his Shadowhunter face, as if the past twenty years had never happened, as if he still lived on the other side of that wall the Nephilim had built, placing themselves on one side and everyone else on the other.
He looked down on her, as if she was the one who couldn't be trusted, as if she was the one who'd lost Jocelyn, who'd failed Clary. He look at her as if they hadn’t spent the last decade trying to convince Jocelyn it was time to stop hiding the truth from her daughter, as if all those late night conversations and high-fives over report cards and arguing over who got to keep Clary’s latest artwork to put on their fridge had never happened.
He had the nerve to warn her about Magnus, as if he wasn't the one who'd pulled a gun on her and taken away the only thing she might have been able to use to help Clary, to track her, to be there for her after her parents had failed her.
Dot had thought of them as family.
She should have known they didn't feel the same.
Once a Shadowhunter...
But Clary hadn't been raised a Nephilim, didn't know, couldn't know what was happening around her.
None of this was Clary's fault.
Clary deserved better, and Dot was damn well not going to be yet another person to abandon her.
* Magnus wasn’t any better than Luke had been.
Well.
He was armored and armed, pretending he didn’t care, wouldn’t care, pretending he couldn’t imagine why Dot did, couldn’t possibly understand why Dot was risking herself for a Shadowhunter.
She knew him better than that, had known him too long to fall for the flash and fire of his reputation.
She remembered him from before, before all of this happened the first time, back when they’d had their fling, drinking and dancing the nights away almost a hundred years ago. Even then he’d had his masks, had pretended to care more about his parties than his people, but it had been a long time since she’d let him fool her. He had a soft heart beneath his sharp wits, and he was always willing to reach out to strangers, to risk himself for friends, for family.
She remembered him slipping a diamond ring off his finger to tip a cigarette girl whose make-up only barely hid the black-eye she’d gotten from somewhere, a finger lifted to his lip with a shhh, so she’d know not to tell anyone.
The poor girl had kissed his cheek, a smear of lipstick as her breath had stuttered, and Dot was sure she’d been a half-a-heartbeat away from bursting into tears.
They’d never seen her again, but Magnus had gotten a postcard two years later, a simple thank you written above a familiar red shade of lipstick pressed against the cheap paper in a kiss.
He’d almost cried, and he’d never quite forgiven Dot for being there when it happened, had clearly never meant for her to see that glimpse behind his walls, had never wanted her to know how much it meant to him, that thank you.
She remembered him during the Uprising. How he’d run himself ragged protecting as many people as he could, how he’d drained himself dry night after night for anyone who asked, and half of those who didn’t dare.
She wondered if he was afraid he couldn’t do it again, afraid they’d lose too many if he failed.
She wondered if he knew he would, at some point, be pulled back in again, and was holding his power in reserve, just in case.
She couldn’t begrudge him trying to get them all out ahead of it this time, but she’d never have imagined she’d ask him for help and he’d say no.
He never said no.
(If it hadn’t been this, hadn’t been her, hadn’t been because of Valentine, hadn’t been for Clary, she might almost have been proud of him.)
She wondered why he felt he had to hide himself from her, of all people, or if maybe he just thought if he let it out at all he wouldn’t be able to tuck it back in again, wouldn’t be able to keep himself in control for all those people he was hiding away from the Circle.
He’d always had to guard that soft heart of his, or it would have been bruised too much for even him to bear.
He asked her to come away with him, but he didn’t really mean it. He knew she’d turn him down.
He knew exactly why Dot couldn’t go with him.
She thought of the Warlocks she’d seen slipping through the Portal when she arrived, thought of how tired Magnus’ eyes looked in the dawn light on those rare mornings when his glamour slipped, and she supposed she knew why he wouldn’t stay behind, too.
For just an instant, before he flicked his fingers and backed away, before he left her alone, she thought she saw the shine of regret in his eyes.
But he’d made his choice.
And so had she.
She hoped they both could live with it.
