Avatar AU - When Sozin killed his dragon (I assume he did), he didn't understand the curse that would fall on his bloodline and anyone they marry: becoming the creature he killed whenever they get emotional.

I sort of like the thought that Zuko and Aang take the Sun Warriors' warning not to tell anyone about the dragons a little more seriously… and they keep it between them. Of course, they trust Sokka, Toph and Katara. Of course they know they wouldn’t tell anyone, but now three people (including Iroh) know the truth about Ran and Shaw. And that’s three too many when you’re trying to keep a secret.
(and there are other people at the temple as well - like Haru, Teo and The Duke - who, while trustworthy, aren’t as close to them as the others, and when it comes to secrets with as much consequence as this one, you can’t afford to take any chances.)
Furthermore, the culture within the Fire Nation since Sozin’s rein has been warped. The culture is not to respect the dragons as the original firebenders, it’s to conquer and kill them. It’s the ultimate proof of your strength as a firebender. All it takes is one mistake before rumour spreads, and people go looking for the ultimate hunt. It’s not something Zuko or Aang can risk.
Whether Katara, Toph and Sokka (and Suki) ever find out the truth is up to you. But post-war, after Zuko returns from a strange, poorly explained trip with a dragon, and eventually develops the ability to use rainbow fire, either the others have some questions about Aang’s knowing look, or they are finally let in on a monumental secret.
#it’s a kids show so i think for that reason it was played for laughs about keeping the dragons a secret is not necessarily a bad choice...#the show does that sometimes where it says something off hand and then leaves me lying face down contemplating ✨the consequences✨ of that#but there are some… implications there about being too loose lipped with the truth in leading up to the end of and immediately post#war fire nation. just because zuko understands the spiritual significance of a dragon it does not mean the rest of his people will. actuall#its more likely that they'd reject zuko's opinion considering that he's basically coming into power and then telling everyone that#they've been lied to their whole lives. the fire nation is drowning in propaganda. for a lot of people this opinion of dragons and#firebending's true nature being violence and destruction is all they know. fire is LIFE but to most people that's an alien concept#and in terms of keeping secrets - it’s not even a matter of trust it’s a matter of too many people knowing#you might not even realised you’ve revealed some incredible information to someone who has the means to spread it or pursue it#so… i think zuko would be hyper aware of this. since he grew up hearing stories about the 'glory' of dragon hunting#and since iroh has also made a concerted effort to keep this information hidden i think it makes sense he’d be very hesitant to let it#get out to the public#aang would agree i think esp if zuko explained the importance of hiding them even from loved ones#ALSO random but it also makes me wonder what the fire nation said about roku in wake of the war#he had a dragon but he didn’t kill it. he didn’t ’conquer’ it#sozin would have had to work his ASS off to reframe history as him being the more… loyal(?) patriotic (?) of the two#did he frame it as roku didn’t have the courage to kill a dragon??? that he lacked the strength of a true firebender?#the avatar works hard but sozin's propaganda machine works harder 🧍‍♀️#zuko#aang#avatar the last airbender#zuko & aang#jack talks#sun warriors#book 3#what is it with me having a whole separate post in the tags 👁️👄👁️

Do you think if Fire Lord Sozin read "A Song of Ice and Fire" he would have gone like "… SH*T, P*SS, F*CK, C*NT!! WHY DIDN'T I USE THE DRAGONS?? WHY THE F*CK DID I CHOOSE TO KILL THE DRAGONS, INSTEAD OF USING THEM IN THE CONQUEST, F*CKING SH*T!!"?

I sent this in the reply’s but just in case I send it here too!
Omg I would love kyoshi novels characters and Sozin + Roku !! Pls and thnx I rarely see any kyoshi hc because it’s not that popular in avatar universe ✨🤩
Okay, Rise of Kyoshi character headcanons:
When they would spend time together Yun would trace lines in Kyoshi's palm with his finger, but she was always to focused on other things to realize it was poetry. Sometimes classics about stately trees or great beauties or forces of nature and the things that survive them. Sometimes is own about fire lilies and a handsome girl whose face he sees when he closes his eyes and whose smile fills his heart.
Kirima and Wong knew each other before the Flying Opera Company and married for convenience. When their combined funds and the sympathy afforded a young couple supposedly hoping to start a family still couldn't make ends meet, they turned to the daofei. Unfortunately, due to daofei vows, they cannot honorably seek a divorce through legal means and so in the eyes of the law are still married. They often joked about getting divorced when one did something that bothered the other.
Jianzhu and Kelsang kissed at least once
Kyoshi is autistic
Lek did have a crush on Rangi until realizing how relentlessly snobby she is except for her one exception: Kyoshi, and it's entirely because of romantic interest. Mundane AU Lek would also be a big MDC fan
Sozin and Roku headcanons
Roku's family, though wealthy and influential enough to have contact with the Royal Family by the time he was a child, was not from an ancient bloodline. As close as he was to the Prince, Roku never forgot his roots.
Sozin's grandfather was known for his generosity that the common people approved of but the rest of the royal family did not. This led to a period of austerity and longing for the good ol' days in the palace that Sozin was born into. All his life he heard family saying that their rank "used to mean something."
Sozin named his son after his dragon

The Emperor. Art by Camila Quintana, from The Jasmine Dragon Tarot.
Firelord Sozin as The Emperor. In both a literal and metaphorical way he fits the card. Can you identify the building on the background?

Everyone talks about how Appa is apparently obese for a sky bison and Aang is over feeding him. Undeserved in my opinion (hes just big boned obviously)
Tumblr media
But nobody talks about how Druk (Zuko's dragon) is a complete fatass compared to other dragons.
For example: These are pics of Roku's Dragon, Fang, and Sozin's Dragon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you see how long and noodley they are. They're actual dragons too, not Wyverns like GoT dragons. (Note the 4 legs)
And heres Ran and Shaw:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See, still very noodley. And these are quite old, large dragons.
And this? This is Druk:
Tumblr media
And Its not just the angle because even when he is sitting down he's fat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously Druk has lived a life of luxery, he's a pampered little prince

Zuko reacts to dating an Airbender Reader
Tumblr media
Background you grew up in the earth kingdom with a family of air benders and earth benders. Your great grand father fled somewhere safe in the earth kingdom where he settled down and started a family with your great grandma.
You met Aang and the gang while they were in Ba Sing Se and had been in the Jasmine Dragon where Zuko and Iroh worked a few times.
After you join the gang and the Solar Eclipse, you met Zuko again in the Western Air Temple. You two recognized each other.
Y/N: "Lee?"
Zuko: "Um my real name is Zuko."
You were confused then after learning about the gang's side of the story you maintain caution and kinda...stay out of it.
After he join you two started talking, it was awkward cause your interactions with him was positive though nothing special.
Zuko would be shock to find out you're an airbender, you explain about your great grandfather was on his way to one of the air temples when he heard of Sozin attacking. So he fled to the deepest part of the Earth Kingdom and hide his identity as a nomad.
Zuko didn't blame him one bit. He is honestly glad you hid yourself cause he would've mistaken you as the Avatar if he known if there was survivors in the Earth Kingdom.
Zuko starts to develop a crush on you when you got your own little trip with him.
You were there when he faced Azula in the war, you and Katara had to team up to stop her after she shot Zuko.
You two started dating after the war is over. It started when you got your airbending arrow tattoos becoming an Air Nomad. Though you guys kept it a secret till many years later you two tie the knot.
Dates include trips to Emerald Island, chilling near the duck pond, flying together on your own bison and his dragon. (Thank Avatar WOTW for the date night with Jake and Neytiri.)

I believe Aang was right to end the war by sparing Ozai. But the only (imho) valid reason some people say he should have done it is because they wanted Aang to realize that pacifism is flawed.
I'm gonna disagree with you here, because a lot of the flaws fans talk about pacism and how ATLA in particular handles it as a concept are 99%:
1 - People being ignorant/racist and not knowing the difference between pacifist monks and "make love, not war" hippies.
2 - People being ignorant/racist and refusing to understand that there are different kinds of pacifism, even within the same cultures/people groups.
Aang is very clearly not the type of pacifist to go "You can NEVER react with ANY kind of violence towards someone else, even if it's to defend yourself/someone else" (which does exist, both IRL and in the show, just look at the owl spirit in "The Library").
We see him fight, and even be quite aggressive in said fights, in a lot of episodes. We also see he has no issues with invading the Fire Nation. More importantly, for the longest time the Avatar State was a result of him being pissed off enough at some kind of injustice that it makes him lose control, meaning he is very clearly affected by the horrors of war to the point of RAGE.
What makes him a pacifist is the way in which he doesn't WANT to lose control, doens't WANT go from aggressive to full on cruel, and, yes, wants to defeat his enemies, but not kill them.
And as I keep repeating, the show DOES make him question that last boundary he set for himself. He gets told by a past Avatar, who was also an air-nomad before anything, that, when there is such a large threat to everyone's life, including his own, he has to put aside his own spiritual needs and take a life - provided there isn't another option. But there was, so Aang took that, even after he decided that, yes, if there was no other way, he WOULD kill Ozai.
What people don't like is that Avatar, although questioning some types of pacifism, is far more interested in questioning the way people are WAY too eager to use violence to solve their issues, and, more importantly, expect someone else to get their hands bloody.
Fire Lord Sozin starts the war because he, according to himself at least, wants what's best for everyone and would like to share the Fire Nation's glory and great life with the other nations. He tries to do by invading foreign territories, killing his best friend, and commiting genocide. The fucker even has the dragons, an obvious Fire Nation symbol, to be hunted to extintion.
When Jet is angry at the Gaang for ruining his plan to free a village from the Fire Nation's control by blowing up a dam, Sokka asks "Who would be free? Everyone would be dead."
Zuko is banished because he spoke out against a Fire Nation higher-up's plan to use soldiers as fresh meat to bait the enemy into a more vulnerable position, thus assuring the nation's victory in that battle. He openly says "These men love and defend our nation, how can you betray them?"
When Zhao wants to kill the moon spirit, Iroh tries to stop him by pointing out that the Fire Nation needs the moon too (seriously, if it wasn't for Yue's sacrifice and Zhao's death, the Fire Nation would have had to create a word for "Big-ass wave that wrecks everything and kills people" like Japan did).
When Aang is deliberately trying to trigger the Avatar State because he doesn't want anyone else to die in the war, Katara, who had her life ruined by said war, is against it because while she opposes the Fire Nation, she cares about Aang and, in her own words, seeing him in so much pain and rage hurts her too. When Aang can't force himself to go nuclear, an Earth Kingdom ruler attacks Katara and makes both her and Aang, two very traumatized child soldiers, think he is going to kill her.
More importantly, when Ozai wants to burn down Earth Kingdom cities, he says "A new world will rise from the ashes, and I'll be supreme ruler of everything", to which Zuko concludes that, if they don't save the world before his dad takes over, there won't be a world to save.
And what does he say to Aang when he is about to kill him? "You're weak, just like your people. They didn't deserve to live in world, in my world."
Avatar does questions pacifism, and is critical of it on ocasion (again, watch "The Library"). But it's biggest theme is being critical of VIOLENCE, of resorting to it immediately without considering any other option and acting like it doesn't have long-lasting negative consequences, both to the person suffering it to the person inflicting it (see Azula's breakdown, Zuko's angry outburts only making him more miserable, Jeong Jeong growing to resent being a firebender, Zhao accidentally burning his own ships, etc)
The show is constantly highlighting that, yes, sacrifices need to be made for the greater good - but that CAN'T be normalized because it inevitably leads to a never-ending cicle of cruelty, as well as suffering to the one who has to do the dirty job (because lets not forget there's a big difference in how a soldier that is constantly in battle sees the war and how a king that just gives the orders but never goes into the actual combat sees the war).
The show embraces pacifism, despite knowing some versions of it are flawed, because the narratives themes are:
1 - EVERYONE is capable of great good and great evil
2 - No group has the right to impose it's own lifestyle onto others
3 - If everyone is either dead, mentally (and physically) scarred for life, or preparing to kill someone as revenge, then being killed by someone who wants to avenge that person, who will themselves be killed for revenge later, then the "greater good" you're sacrificing everything for doesn't actually exist because NO ONE will have a good life in a world that is stuck in the cicle of violence.

Showing Sozin's attack on the Air Temple (singular!!?!?!?) was also a huge mistake because man did they undersell what Firebenders under the Comet were like.
It just sort of played it off as "the Firebenders got stronger", as Aang suggested when Roku spoke to him. It failed to account Roku's "stronger than you could even begin to imagine"--or what we see in the finale.
I assume when they firebenders took down the temples, they did what Ozai and his minions were doing to the Earth Kingdom, but on a far more localized scale: they burned the mountains themselves.
Tumblr media
I asked as I was watching the opening and they crowded the Air Nomad children INSIDE a BUILDING, "Why don't they just fly away?"
The answer would be: they couldn't breathe. They couldn't fly high enough. The sky filled with smoke in the ambush, they could only beat it back for so long. Gliders were incinerated, there was nowhere to land for miles and miles around, and the sky was choked with ash and smoke.
It was also stated to be a "devastating first strike". The point wasn't a total genocide right then and there: it was just to kill as many children and protectors as possible. Sozin's dragon(s?) would have also been capable of hunting the bison; it was probably also an ambush and betrayal that they weren't prepared for.
Gyatso went down in a small chamber, probably because he went down in one last move by pushing all of the air OUT of the chamber: a devastating final move that shut down all of the enemy's ability to bend, comet or no comet, and could only be endured for a few moments by Gyatso himself.
But the live-action version decided "eh, they just had Bigger Fire."

the storm is such a great episode for many reasons but i always come back to iroh telling the soldiers directly that he looked away when zuko was burned. zuko screams! iroh looks away and zuko screams, letting us imagine the horror of the scene before him
i think when he says that to the crew, it’s not about literally the fact that he closed his eyes and turned away (tho it is), it’s an admission of guilt. it’s saying i did nothing. at any point along this whole scenario unfolding, iroh could’ve stepped in to try and do damage control. he’s the dragon of the west! he’s the fire lord’s older brother! are we supposed to believe there was nothing he could do to protect zuko?
it’s another proof, in my opinion, that lu ten’s death didn’t change iroh as much as we like to think. he still submitted to the authority and supremacy of the fire lord and the fire nation, even at the cost of a 13 year old boy. he carries that shame with him, and it’s one of the things that propels him into his OWN growth in book 2, when he starts to realize that zuko is growing into a man who deserves a life outside of the hate and fear and paranoia of their family
iroh looked away last time zuko was hurt and he KNOWS that if zuko returns, he will be hurt again. at the end of book 2 this time he refuses to stand down and look away. and zuko makes the “wrong choice” but zuko is 16 and abused by his father! iroh is a full grown ass man and he still needed this teenager to show him the truth of the lie he’s been fed his entire life.
anyway that’s one of the reasons zuko begging for iroh’s forgiveness in sozin’s comet is so insanely painful. zuko did it all by himself, and in doing so, he redeemed IROH. not the other way around! how could be possibly have been angry! he was so sad and he was so afraid because HE felt like he failed zuko!

Thanks for the ask!!
Dragon!Royal Family time!
Iroh had known about the family curse for as long as he could remember. He first remembered his father telling him about how his grandfather had killed his dragon and doomed their family forever when he was four. Sozin’s plan was to show that killing dragons would mark someone as a great firebender and earn them the title of dragon. When he murdered his dragon though, a curse was sent upon him and Azulon, who was a teenager at the time.
“My father almost destroyed our great legacy, but you, your children and I will make sure his mistake is never known to the world.”
The curse had been the ability to transform into dragons. When Iroh was young, he was confused about why this was a curse. Being a dragon sounded like so much fun and he said as much to his father and mother, who was also affected by the curse.
“Youth.” Azulon had rolled his eyes, “Being a dragon is a curse because it’s a weakness. Your dragon self is tied to your emotions. If you get too happy or sad you become a beast. Do you have any idea what the people would do if they believed beasts were ruling over them? How easy it would be for assassins to murder us in our dragon forms? How do you plan on conducting a meeting when you can’t speak?”
Iroh never said anything positive about the curse ever again. That night, he did have a question for his mother though. He asked her why he couldn’t transform.
“You’re not old enough. Soon though.” She looked sad, “Enjoy your humanity while you can.”

Avatar Cycle Trivia
Avatar Wan
Wan's name translates to "ten thousand" in Mandarin Chinese, as he lived ten thousand years before Avatar Korra. His name is also a pun on "one", as in Avatar number one.
Wan wore the colour of each of the four nations during his battle against Vaatu. His robes were yellow and orange (air), his armbands were green (earth), his sash was blue (water), and his scarf was red (fire).
In addition to becoming the first Avatar, Wan is also the first true firebender, as he was the first person to learn firebending from a dragon.
By fusing with Raava during Harmonic Convergence, Wan is technically the oldest Avatar to be identified, being 21 at the time.
The Earth Kingdom battlefield where Wan died is the same field that Zuko visits millennia later in Zuko Alone (Book 2: Episode 7). Interestingly, Wan first appeared in Beginnings, Part 1, which was the seventh episode of Legend of Korra, Book 2: Spirits.
Avatar Yangchen
Yangchen is the only known Avatar to have a sibling (Jetsun).
Yangchen is technically the first Avatar to have an established Team Avatar (not counting Wan and Raava).
Yangchen had split-personality disorder with her past lives, where she essentially suffered from nightmares of her past lives bleeding into her present self.
Yangchen's companion Kavik is the first person ever seen get chi-blocked.
Yangchen did not like the idea of people creating statues of herself in the future. Ironically, she was greatly revered in the Four Nations, and a statue each was built in both the Eastern and Western Air Temples.
Avatar Kuruk
Kuruk is currently the only known Avatar whose predecessor and successor were both women (Yangchen and Kyoshi respectively).
Kuruk had more lovers in 3 decades than Kyoshi did in over 2 centuries (the true story is more tragic).
Kuruk had a habit of challenging random people to feats of strength, which makes him the only known Avatar in history to have participated in an Agni Kai.
Kuruk was the best hunter and tracker in the history of the Four Nations. It's said there was nothing he couldn't hunt or track down (that includes spirits).
Kuruk is the only known Avatar to enter the Spirit World after death. Considering that only people with a special connection to the Spirit World can enter at death (such as Iroh and Yue), this means Kuruk must have had a spiritual connection rivalling that of most Air Nomad monks or nuns.
Avatar Kyoshi
Kyoshi is the only known Avatar known to be of mixed nationality; her father was from the Earth Kingdom, while her mother was a renegade Air Nomad.
Kyoshi had a rare condition with her earthbending where she could move large objects with ease but had difficulty in moving smaller objects (Suffering From Success).
Kyoshi has witnessed more passings of Sozin's Comet than anyone else, with three (not counting Lao Ge).
Kyoshi learned the secret to immortality from Lao Ge, which led her to have the longest lifespan of any Avatar.
Kyoshi has threatened both the Earth King and the Firelord.
Avatar Roku
Roku and Firelord Sozin share the same birthday.
Roku has been featured in the introduction sequences of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
Roku is the only known Avatar to appear old when he was called upon by the current Avatar.
When Roku entered the Avatar State for the first time, he destroyed the Fire Sage Temple.
Roku's dragon Fang is the only animal companion ever seen in the Spirit World.
Avatar Aang
It took Aang longer than any Avatar in history to become fully realized, being over a century old.
Aang has a scar on his back and on his foot, because of how electricity works.
Aang choosing four toys out of thousands – to identify him as the Avatar as these four toys were the same ones that past Avatars had chosen for generations when they were children – was the same procedure used by the Tibetan Buddhist monks to recognize the next reincarnation of the Tulku Lama.
Aang has met the original source of every bending art: a flying bison for air, the Moon Spirit for water, badgermoles for earth, and two dragons for fire.
Aang is the first Avatar to have his picture taken.
Avatar Korra
At four years old, Korra is the youngest Avatar in history to be identified.
Korra is the first Avatar to learn spiritbending.
Korra is the only Avatar to break out of bloodbending without the use of the Avatar State (sorry, Aang).
Korra is the only Avatar to have killed a member of her own family (Unalaq).
Korra is the first known person to ever tame a polar bear-dog (Naga).
Miscellaneous
Wan and Roku are the only two Avatars to die in combat.
Roku and Aang are the only two Avatars to fight a volcano. Aang was successful, while Roku died.
Aang and Korra are the only two Avatars to ever be defeated in the Avatar State.
Aang and Kyoshi are the only two Avatars to ever get hit by lightning. Ironically, when Kyoshi was hit by lightning, her chakras were opened and she gained the ability to enter the Avatar State; conversely, Aang's chakras were blocked and he was unable to enter the Avatar State.
Kuruk and Roku are the only two Avatars to have been identified the "traditional" way in their respective nations at 16; Wan fused with Raava at 21, Kyoshi was identified at 16 when she recited Kuruk's poem, and Yangchen, Aang and Korra were identified at younger ages.
Yangchen, Aang, and Korra are the only Avatars to have been identified at younger ages than 16.
Wan, Aang, and Korra are the only Avatars who are modeled after real-life people. Wan is modeled after co-creator Bryan Konietzko (but with cooler hair); young Aang is modeled after Arjuna, Sifu Kisu's son (but Aang is bald), while adult Aang is modeled after co-creator Mike DiMartino; and Korra is modeled after various female MMA fighters, most notably Gina Carrano.
Roku and Korra are the only two Avatars who have worn an outfit from each of the four nations on-screen.
Roku and Korra are the only two Avatars to have connections to royalty. Firelord Zuko, and thus every following Firelord, are descendants of both Roku and Sozin, whereas Korra's father was a member of the Northern Water Tribe's royal family, and was later elected as the chief of the newly independent Southern Water Tribe.
When Kyoshi first met Yangchen, she (Kyoshi) mistook Yangchen for her own mother.
When Kyoshi first met Kuruk, she almost drowned her physical body trying to communicate with him.
Roku and Yangchen are the only two Avatars to have hugged the current Avatar at the time (Aang and Kyoshi respectively).
Wan, Korra, and Kuruk are the only Avatars to refer to Raava by name, although the latter (Kuruk) had never met Raava.
Yangchen, Kuruk, and Aang are the only Avatars to have invented an airbending technique. By extension, Kuruk is the only person outside of the Air Nomads to invent an airbending technique (he didn't get his mastery tattoos, what a shame).
Aang and Korra are the only two Avatars to learn energybending.
Kyoshi, Roku, and Aang are the only Avatars to use bending after their respective deaths.
Kyoshi, Roku, and Aang are also the only Avatars to have descendants (but let's be realistic, so did Kuruk).
Aang and Korra both learned their native element from a companion of the previous Avatar, and their final element from a descendant of the previous Avatar. Aang learned airbending from Monk Gyatso, a companion of Roku, and learned firebending from Zuko, Roku's great-grandson. Korra learned waterbending from Katara, Aang's wife, and learned airbending from Tenzin, Aang and Katara's youngest son.
That's all the fun facts I could find.

This action-packed story picks up right after Ember Island Players and continues well after the war. Zuko is facing many challenges as a new Fire Lord. Romance, tough decisions, rebels, traitors, out-of-body experiences, secret headquarters, angst, teamwork, fire jets. The story has a bunch of OCs.
 ·        Refraction by caroes3725  | Published: 2020-09-09 | 215K Words | 37 Chapters
After breaking up with Aang, Katara needs to figure out her place and role in the patriarchal world. Diplomatic visits, Gaang reunion, bonding with Kanna, insights into the life of Caldera city, stuffy politicians, cute correspondence, tropical storm, women supporting women, assassination attempts, personal boundaries. A sweet well-written coming-of-age story with a healthy measure of slow-burn and mutual pining. Katara and Zuko are both POVs, but the story mostly follows Katara. Bonus: Mai is NOT a clingy resentful idiot, but a smart person and a good friend. Some explicit language here and there, a bit of mild smut.

Ongoing, incomplete. Post Southern Raiders ATLAS3 rewrite. Mostly canon-compliant with blanks filled in between familiar scenes. After divorcing Aang, Katara uproots her family and travels to Caldera. There she finds comfort, kindness and support from an old friend. Katara tries to find her footing as an independent political figure. Great story & relationship dynamic of Momtara & Dadko in their early 30s (Ember island, diplomatic meeting, dancing, turtleduck pond, letters). Delicious slow burn with rewarding spicy resolution in the end (explicit open door). Titters on the side of Anti-Aang.

Came across a few posts about how Azula is the best firebender in the series, and that subject is probably more based on opinion than fact I guess, but still feels like saying that is antithetical to the themes of the story. What do you think?
I agree that it's antithetical to the themes of the story. Azula cannot be the best firebender because she is not working with a complete understanding of firebending, which is linked to the themes of the story and bending as a metaphor for how we engage with ourselves and others.
I recently saw a post that said the dragons would judge Azula worthy because firebending is about drive. And oh, boy, does that completely misunderstand the themes of that episode.
The whole point is that the Fire Nation's post-Sozin relationship with fire, the idea of "having the power and drive to achieve what you want" and valuing that above all else is exactly what caused the world to fall out of balance. It is this drive for power that we see corrupt people like Sozin, Zhao, Ozai, and yes, Azula.
When Zuko faces the dragons, the original firebending masters, he learns that fire is so much more than just a drive for power. Fire is life itself, it's passion, it's warmth, it's something to be both kept in check and nurtured to become healthy. Like a little heartbeat that can be snuffed out if you aren't careful, or can burn out of control if not tempered.
So many people like to say Azula only lost the final agni kai because of her mental state, but the truth is that 1) Azula was never in a healthy mental state, at any point that we saw her in the show, and 2) she does not have the wisdom to see anything beyond her own drive for power, and that is going to prevent her from having a true link to her element.
The elements themselves are inspired by different martial arts. This is well-known. But martial arts is a form that emphasizes discipline over raw power, especially Xiaolin, which firebending is based on. It's all about self control and finding balance within oneself. Which is a theme that is cited over and over again in the show.
Iroh tells Zuko at the beginning of the show that he cannot move on to advanced forms until he has mastered the basics. He is trying to teach him how to develop the control he needs to be a true firebending master. Zuko acts this way towards his element because this is what he learned from Ozai, and from watching Azula, who has no self control and no patience. We see her practice her forms, sure, but we also see her get incredibly angry when it's not perfect. Azula has some moves that she's perfected to cause the most damage, but she's not comfortable when stepping outside of that zone, cannot take criticism at all, and threatens anyone who says she is not the best. She cannot possibly be the best firebender with such a limited understanding of her element.
Which is also why she loses even with the power of the comet on her side. Because all the power in the world won't help if the spirit isn't in balance. People will act like Azula's mental breakdown only existed to "nerf" her in the finale but it's like, literally the whole point, and was something that was building since the beginning of the series.
