Zuko saying that the Ember Island Players butchered love amongst the dragons every year is so funny because it implies that Zuko thinks there is a right way for the play to be performed. But he would not have seen it performed anywhere else if the players butchered it every year. So where is Zuko getting his knowledge on how the play is supposed to be performed? Either from his head, or from his mamma, who we know was once an actor. Imagine Ursa reading this play to her kids, doing all the voices and explaining how the dragon king is supposed to act humbled and in awe of his lady love at this point in the story. Imagine Zuko then explaining this to the gaang.

Azula and her love metaphors.

Azula loves dragon metaphors, where her loved ones are her treasures.

The young Princess sees Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee as her precious treasures, the three have to be protected, cared for and loved only by her, and she will not be happy that someone else loves them, but she will not do anything about it, because That makes your treasures happy.

Azula thinks that she is her parents' treasure, but she realized that they do not do the same things that she does for their treasures, and that confuses her too much, because the treasures should feel appreciated and loved, something that they do not do to her. feel, and that confuses her too much.

Over time, her love changed, it became more toxic and possessive, she wanted her treasures to always be with her, they didn't want them to leave, again. She is so scared that they will abandon her, that someone else will steal them, she doesn't want that, she will do whatever she can for them...Until they abandoned her once again and she began to see others as her new treasures.

Something I love about ATLA is that it doesn't force the "forgive the villain" on all the characters. It's been left clear that Ozai is a bad person, and there's no chance of redemption; the only reason he's not dead yet is because Aang is a pacifist

The one episode where a character is supposed to forgive someone who has hurt them in the past is the one where Katara is off to kill a man (which, fair) and Zuko helps. In that episode, even if Aang is telling her to let go, she doesn't forgive him. She never will. But she spares him. Not because she thinks he doesn't deserve death (he does), but because she's not willing to continue the cycle of violence

Killing someone can have a very important impact in your entire being, mostly depending on who you are as a person. Aang would've never recovered from killing Ozai. Katara wouldn't be who she is now, had she taken her revenge on the man that killed her mother

And the best part of it is that Ozai doesn't deserve to die. Not in a "I'm defending him" way (ew), but in a "he deserves worse that than" way

Taking away his bending was the perfect punishment for him. He believed bending made you superior and he never cared enough to train something besides his bending. What a loser. Zuko and Azula wouldn't be restrained by something like that

He's alive. Nobody has forgiven him. Nobody ever will

Sketchin’ to force myself through this block I’ve had recently. I’m at the part on the artist progression chart where I notice a bunch of issues with recent drawings and get demotivated. I like to combat this by still doing at least one sketch a day and just doing basic drawing exercises like gestures and stuff. Typically I don’t post those because they’re incoherent slop imho.

Braid practice too, I would like to be able to simplify them in a more eye catching way. Aaaaand dancing Halstarion.

MY MORAX DRAGON PLUSH WAS UP AGAINST THE RADIATOR AND NOW HE’S SO WARM AND LOVELYYY. Hm… actually…

I wonder if his dragon form is an endotherm or not… I suspect Neuvillette’s is, he seems primarily mammalian based (he still has horns and a tail). I don’t know whether or not Zhongli is, I think the consensus for more reptilian dragons is that they’re ectothermic, like Apep & Ourobaxi, but for Chinese dragons I’m not sure.. he has some reptilian features like his main snake-like body having scales, and his claws are probably reptilian not avian. He also has antlers and a beard/mane which are features that endotherms would have, and whiskers which are probably most similar to fish (ectotherm) whiskers (sometimes called barbels)

Dvalin too is one that’s confusing, and I think he actually might be even more bird/mammal based. His body is covered in fur and feathers, and only really has scales at his head and feet. I originally imagined him to be like typically European dragons (ie. probably an ectotherm that reptilian like) but if anything he seems to be mainly bird-like, especially his tail. The material of his wings though is so confusing! It’s hard to tell whether there’s feathers or if it’s even butterfly-esque wings!! I’m tentatively putting him as warm blooded.

Azhdaha is probably cold blooded, although his body is heavily affected by the elements, and he even has a tree growing out of his tail… the designers of Azhdaha said he was inspired by many things (being crocodile-like, as well as based on a ‘quadruped toad’, Komodo dragon, alligator snapping turtle and stegosaurus) but they all are ectotherms.

Both Ursa the Drake and Durin (though he seems to have had a very damaged body even when he was alive) are much more based on typical European dragons than Dvalin, and appear to both be cold blooded too.

So my guess is this:

MOST LIKELY TO BE WARM-BLOODED

-Neuvillette (there’s a chance he might be more like a serpent, but he’s also designed very similarly to Fontaine otters. His ladle- very presumably based on his dragon- doesn’t give us many details either. He has horns & a tail that looks like a fluke (aquatic mammal tail) rather than a fish tail (caudal fin). So my guess is warm blooded!)

-Dvalin (bird/mammal/potentially insect type)

-Morax/Zhongli/Deus Auri <- this might be his oldest title, it precedes him being the Geo Archon by several thousand years. (Chinese dragon- 龙/龍 type. If anyone knows whether they’re official warm or cold blooded please tell me!)

MOST LIKELY TO BE COLD BLOODED

-Ursa & Durin (European reptilian type)

-Azhdaha (mixed reptile/amphibian type)

-Apep & Ourobaxi (fully serpent types)

???

-Elynas (probably cold blooded, Rhine seems to make that kind. Melusines are confusing biologically, but how similar he is to them is unknown. His projected spirit looks like one, but his corpse/skeleton is like Durin. Melusines look potentially mammalian but also have rhinophores… then again they sometimes have small wings. Real life melusines are a mix of human & sea serpent. So like. I really don’t know what category to put them in)

Dragon AU headcanons

I came up with instead of paying attention in the staff meeting.

Ozai taught Ursa how to cook. Dragons are pure carnivores and usually eat their meat raw so Ursa never need a reason to cook before she met Ozai.

Also, Ozai pretty much taught himself how to cook. His mother died when he was still young and he was left home alone a lot (at an age he really shouldn't have been) so he basically raised himself.

One of the few memories Ozai has of his mother is making honey biscuits with her. He's glad his children love them, and Ursa enjoys making them even if she doesn't eat them.

The dragon pups were pure carnivores like their mother when they were very young. They slowly transitioned to plants and other non-meats. But their diet is still very meat heavy (which fits in perfectly with Water Tribe food).

Ursa tried a vegetable once and nearly threw up. She can handle tea but only if it's drowned in honey much to Ozai's horror.

Adult fire dragons are as big as Ran and Shaw in the show. Ursa's actually very small for her age due to the trauma she suffered when she was young. Zuko is the only one to reach Ran and Shaw's size when he becomes an adult.

I've been thinking about doing a dragon AU kind of fic so I made some dragon Fire Nation family headcanons

Ursa is the only one with no dragon form. By the time Azula comes into the picture she knows exactly how to survive with a family of dragons though.

Azula, Zuko and Lu Ten destroy everything. Almost every object in their room either has burn marks, teeth marks or claw marks.

Just as kittens use their claws for everything so do baby dragons. The only difference is that kitten claws are retractable and dragon claws are not. So many servants, Ursa and the Gaang find this out the hard way.

Both Zuko and Azula agree horns are the worst part of being part dragon.

When they were younger and had trouble walking and staying close to Lu Ten, Azula and Zuko would grab his tail and use it to stay close to him.

Dragons can’t fly until they’re at least six years old. Azula was so determined though that she attempted to launch herself off the roof when she was four only to be caught by her mom.

Sokka was the first person to invent a device that helps with broken dragon wings.

During the final Agni Kai, Zuko went between his human and dragon form with ease while Azula was caught in between the two unable to commit to one or the other.

Zuko’s burn isn’t as noticeable when he’s a dragon cause he has red scales.

Dragons are fully grown when a person is in their late teens or early twenties. Fully grown dragons are the size of Raw and Shaw, teenage dragons are about the size of a sky bison, kid dragons about the size of a tiger and baby dragons about the size of Momo. Appa is a little bigger than both Zuko and Azula and totally has fun with this.

In this chapter we see Azula return to the palace and the definite end to the asylum arc from the start of the story. Here we get glimpses of how Azula's time there will impact her going forward. Along with some tender Ursa and Azula moments.

Ursa also takes a short trip to visit Azula's old doctors.
