🐇 Easter Candy (Ryoma Echizen)
Tumblr media
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 947
Pairing: Reader x Ryoma
World: Prince of Tennis
Table of Contents
━━━━━━༻🐇༺━━━━━━
You sat under a tree near the tennis courts, playing a game on your Vita. Honestly, you weren’t all that interested in tennis but, since your boyfriend was a tennis freak, you often found yourself near the tennis courts more often than you’d like. Ryoma was a good boyfriend, though, and knows that you’re not interested, so he uses his allowance to buy new games for your Vita to keep you occupied while you wait on him.
Today was different, though.
Ryoma approached you, placing his hat on top of your head to get your attention. “Let’s go, senpai.”
You looked up at him in confusion. “Practice is over already?”
“Buchou is sending me to run an errand.” He frowned, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “You’re coming with me.”
You rolled your eyes, placing your vita into its case and into your bag. “Thanks for giving me a choice.”
He smirked, grabbing your hand and pulling you toward the school gate. You shifted your hand to lace your fingers together. His smirk changed into a smile and he looked away since he couldn’t hide it beneath his cap.
“Where are we going, anyway?”
“To buy candy.”
“Candy?” You glanced at him curiously. “What for?”
“Atobe’s Easter festival.”
You frowned. “Atobe is hosting an Easter festival? We’re not going, are we?” You could feel anxiety bubbling in your stomach just from the thought of attending the festival. There would be so many people there… you shivered without even realizing it, but Ryoma caught it easily.
He knew about your anxiety disorder and how freaked you get when you’re around a lot of people. That was how the two of you met, actually – he found you during a panic attack and, although he had no idea what he was doing, he did his best to calm you down.
He squeezed your hand to show he understood. “No, it’ll be too much of a pain. Buchou said that he’d cover for us if I bought the candy, so I agreed.”
You bit your lip, feeling a bit guilty. “It’s okay if you want to go. You should hang out with your friends~”
He stopped walking, narrowing his cat-like eyes at you. “I see them every day. I’d rather spend time with you, senpai.”
Your cheeks warmed up a bit, your heart fluttering with happiness. You pressed your lips to his cheek. “Thank you, Ryoma.”
His cheeks burned and he quickly reached up to tug his cap down only to pout when he remembered that you had it. He glared at you when you started laughing so you decided to return the cap to its rightful owner.
“Let’s just get this over with.”
It didn’t take long to reach the grocery store. You headed straight for the candy aisle and to your favorite holiday treat – peeps. Before you could grab them, though, Ryoma stopped you.
“Someone else is in charge of getting peeps. We’re here to get everything else.”
You frowned, sending a longing look at the peeps before turning toward the rest of the candy. “So we just get… everything?”
He nodded as he started carelessly throwing bags upon bags of candy into the shopping cart. You chuckled at his attitude before giving him a hand. Once the cart was overflowing with candy, you decided to stop and head for the check-out counter. Ryoma had other plans, though, and disappeared before you arrived there.
The cashier looked at you with wide eyes as you started to dump the bags onto the belt. You could only smile sheepishly at him as he started to ring them up. Ryoma returned a few minutes later, his arms full of Ponta. He dumped the cans onto the belt and grinned at you.
“That’s not candy.” You grinned, patting his head.
He smacked your hand away. “He’ll get over it.”
It took a full twenty minutes for the guy to ring up all of the items, and you had to use the cart to bring them outside. Your brow furrowed.
“How are we supposed to get this stuff home?”
He pointed at a slick, black limo sitting off to the side. “Atobe sent a limo to collect all the items.”
You followed the younger male to the limo, where the driver bowed at you before loading the bags into the backseat.
“Can I bring you home?” The driver questioned with a soft smile.
Ryoma shook his head and you thanked the man before following after your boyfriend. He was carrying the bag full of Ponta, but you noticed a separate bag.
“Did you take that by accident?” you questioned, pointing to the second bag.
He pulled his cap down before handing it over to you.
You blinked at the bag. Inside was a single box of sky blue peeps in the shape of little chicks.
“They’re your favorite, right?” he questioned, still refusing to look at you.
“Ryoma…” You smiled brightly, throwing your arms around his neck, bringing his back flush against your chest. “I love you, chibi-chan~”
“Don’t call me that.” He scowled, feeling his cheeks burn with embarrassment. “It’s not that big of a deal.” In truth, he knew that it would be nearly impossible to find a store selling peeps after tomorrow, so he wanted to make sure that you got a box before they disappeared.
You kissed his cheek and smiled brightly. “Let’s hurry home, okay? We can share them~!”
Despite himself, he couldn’t stop the smile that grew on his face when he saw your happy expression. He would never admit it out loud, but he always felt pride when he was able to make you feel happy.

Ryoma x Reader
Title: Childhood Friends Fluff No Warning
You walked outside heading towards somewhere that you could do homework, you had started school at Seigaku middle school after moving from America. You were a shy girl, so making friends never really came easy for you. You always kept your head down, so you didn’t bother anyone or make unwanted eye contact with people. So when you turned the corner you ran into a chest causing you to fall, and your contents spilled out of your bag.
“Ouch, I am sorry.” You say in a small voice, you began to gather your books before someone helped you put your books away. You looked up to see whom you thought was the tennis team that everyone was talking about. You squeaked slightly, before feeling someone poke your forehead.
“Oi Ryoma, don’t do that to the girl.” A tall boy with red hair said, you met eyes of your only childhood friend, and your entire demeanor changed.
“RYOMA!” You tackled him to the ground, which confused the tennis team. He grunted, as you got off of him grabbing your bag, he helped you up before sighing softly.
“Did you have to tackle me after knocking me down?”
“Sorry, but I didn’t know you went here. Today is my first day, so I guess I have no classes with you.” You say, Ryoma looked away before glancing at you. He couldn’t help the small smile that grace his lips, since it has been awhile since he last saw you.
“Yeah this was the school I was talking about when I told you I was leaving for Japan. What are you doing here?” Ryoma asked, you played with the strap of your bag your shy demeanor changing again.
“Father got a new job here, so we had to leave our hometown.”
“Yo, Ryoma is this your girlfriend?” Your eyes widen with a blush, and Ryoma sighed.
“She is a childhood friend, don’t start Momo.” Ryoma said, before eyes going back to you.
“If you want you can watch us practice and then I can walk you home.” Ryoma said, you nodded your head. You followed quietly but the redhead earlier wrapped an arm around your shoulder, your eyes widen looking up at him.
“Are you really only a friend to Ryoma?” He asked.
“Eiji senpai, leave her alone.” Ryoma said grasping your hand, he pulled you away before anyone else could embarrass you. He knew how awkward you were around new people, and since you didn’t have the heart to push people away, Ryoma had to save you.
“Don’t be like that Ryoma~” He said pouting but Oishi only patted his partners shoulder.
“Seems Ryoma is protective over her.”
“Well she does have a innocence about her, between Eiji and Momo they would have scared the girl to no ends.” Inui said adjusting his glasses as he watched Ryoma and you talk as he stretched. You had a wide smile on your face, and Ryoma was just listening, and occasionally reply back to her.
“Let’s grab burgers after practice, I can treat.” Ryoma said, you blinked looking up from your workbook.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I want to, don’t worry about it.” Ryoma said walking away from you. You blinked, before focusing back on your workbook. Occasionally you would look up to watch Ryoma practice, before he messed up. Inui gave him some green liquid that even made you cringe at the sight and making a face.
“That is the appropriate face for that juice.” You turned over to see Oishi, Momo said sitting down wiping the sweat off of his brow.
“That looks disgusting.”
“It’s not just disgusting, I had to brush my teeth for twenty minutes to get the taste out.”
“Gross.” You say, quietly. Ryoma downed it before running towards the lockeroom to get some water. You glanced over at Ryoma as he retreated, and Momo noticed the look you gave him. He poked your shoulder causing you to look up at him, he had that grin on his face which made you uneasy.
“You like him.”
“Of course he is my friend.” You say confused, but Momo poked your nose.
“Like, like-like him.” You continued to stare at him, Momo sweatdropped. You had no idea what he was talking about before asking a question.
“Do you mean like crush kind of like?”
“Yes.”
“Maybe.” You say with a blush, Momo went to open his mouth but he was called for a small meating in the lockeroom. You began to pack up your bags, about fifteen minutes later Ryoma came out of the lockeroom. You both walked out of the school yards, it being silent since it was normal to be quiet. Ryoma gradually grasped your hand into his own not saying anything for a bit. You looked at both of your hands with a small blush, and you leaned over to kiss his cheek, Ryoma couldn’t help but turn his head so you kissed his lips. Your eyes widen, before Ryoma pulled away with a smile.
“Will you be my girlfriend (Y/N)?” Ryoma asked, you looked down before smiling widely.
“Of course Ryoma, I would love too.” Ryoma, placed his hand on your cheek before kissing you again. You closed your eyes, before you hugged Ryoma after parting from the kiss. Ryoma, stroked your hair, the strands smoothly running through his fingers.
“What made you ask me out?” You ask, as he sat at the table after buying you food.
“You told Momo you liked me, and Momo can’t keep a secret. He has a huge mouth, so since I had gotten the confirmation I wanted to.” He said biting into a burger. You blinked before smiling looking down sipping your cola.
“Ryoma, I am glad we ran into each other again.”
“Mhmm.” He said, he didn’t really say much which you didn’t mind. You bit into your burger before Ryoma stole one of your fries, which made you pout and smack his hand.
“Eat your own food.”
“I rather have yours.” He said, you role your eyes. Ryoma did this often so you were use to it. You stole one of his fries, to make it even and he only smiled at you. You both didn’t know you had a tennis team spying on you two.
“Our little Ryoma is growing up.” Eiji said with a smile.
“Seems, he liked her for a long time.” Inui said, writing in his notebook.
“I feel like we should give them some alone time.”
“Oishi you are such a mother hen.” Momo said with that grin.
“I think we should continue, it’s interesting seeing Ryoma like this.” Fuji said, Tezuka remained silent. Even though he was the stoic type, he secretly enjoyed seeing Ryoma being more his age and dating while not allowing it to affect his tennis.
“Ssssss this is a waste of time.” Kaido said walking away. The rest of the team continued to watch the both of you, Ryoma kissing your lips every time you tried to kiss his cheek.

PairPuri volume 8 Crosstalk
Akutsu Jin’s VA Sasaki Nozomu x Kite Eishirou’s VA Shingaki Tarusuke The two who play the most “bad” characters in the series will make their characters’ charm vividly clear while talking about that conflict and philosophy!
How were your auditions and first encounter with your characters? Sasaki: When I was invited to the audition, when I first saw a picture of Akutsu and a selection of his lines, I thought “what a scary character.” (laugh) Shingaki: I knew about the Prince of Tennis anime very early. At that time, I said something like “they have people to play such far off characters,” it was a very distant world. When I was invited to audition, I was surprised. “What, the anime isn’t over?” (laugh) I’m from Okinawa, so I thought that’s why they’d chosen me. When I saw the lines at the audition, Kite was speaking in a very standard way, it didn’t feel like Okinawan dialect at all! Sasaki: Then did you speak normally at the audition? Shingaki: Well, I thought if I spoke normally, it would lose meaning for me to be the one doing it, so I just changed the intonation. Normally, it would be like ~desu ↓, so I spoke with the intonation changed to ~desu↑. Up until then, readers didn’t think he had an accent, and when they saw the anime it seems they were surprised. “Wow, he has a strong accent!” (laugh) Sasaki: Hahaha, in my case, I thought of being given the role of Akutsu as a new challenge, and I played him in a way that was different than everything I had done before. I decided the range of my voice’s tone for myself and tried not to stray from that…. But with my lower limits for tone, there were times during recording when I would think “making my voice a little higher would definitely be easier” (laugh).
What’s the appeal of playing a villain like Akutsu or Kite? Sasaki: I didn’t think about it as playing a villain. People who see him probably think he’s a villain, but I don’t think Akutsu himself thinks he’s a bad guy. He sticks to his own justice. I wasn’t consciously playing him as evil or scary. Shingaki: I don’t think I was trying to play a villain either. I thought that Kite and the rest of Higa are clearly unique, so I was trying for something like that. They have a presence that’s like “we’ll do anything to win!” the voice actors for my teammates had the same thought. But truthfully, during recording, I planned to think of myself as the away team during recording. We got caught up in the feeling of being the away team, we played lines like “we’ll make them surrender” brimming with spirit...that was fresh. Akutsu is more of a lone wolf, huh? Sasaki: Now that you mention it, there aren’t many scenes where he talks to the other Yamabuki players (laugh). Shingaki: Wasn’t there a scene where he gives Dan advice? “Don’t follow me,” it feels like he’s pushing him away.  Sasaki: Dan is so much smaller, and he’s not the same kind of player as Akutsu, so he’s saying “your aim shouldn’t be me, it should be Echizen.” That’s his kindness. Dan is the only one he calls by his first name, Taichi. In that scene, Akutsu has lost to Ryoma and thinks he’s uncool, he’s ashamed and doesn’t want to recognize his own uncoolness, so he’s probably telling Dan “don’t come with me (who lost).” With Dan, I feel like we can see Akutsu’s humanity.
What about “afterwards?” Sasaki: Akutsu returns in New Prince of Tennis, but I think he thought a lot after his match with Ryoma. Akutsu isn’t a character who always appears in the story, but he’s come to encourage Kawamura and has showed up many times after quitting tennis. I’ve thought a lot about what he’s doing and thinking in the points between his appearances. Shingaki: I’m the opposite, I worry. In the OVA Another Story “Prince of Naniwa,” after the national tournament, everyone from Higa runs into Seigaku in Osaka on the way back to Okinawa and they have a pillow fight together. I worried about how to connect that Kite to the desperate battle of nationals. I ended up playing it without consciously thinking of that connection.
Please give a message for the fans!
Shingaki: First I’d like to say that I’m looking forward to the new beginning in New Prince of Tennis too! I’m happy that with this development we have even one more way to be involved, and I’m going to keep playing my beloved character when the time comes. I’ll do my best! Sasaki: The series I love has been powered up even more, and I’m truly happy to hear that Akutsu will also be active in this development. I hope there will be more opportunities to meet everyone, and I’m looking forward to the day I can play Akutsu again.
PairPuri Crosstalk Column [I couldn’t make out this word in the scans] with Kite, who is prominent in character songs! Will the teamwork Higa has showed awaken Akutsu to the power of friendship?
Sasaki:  At TeniFesta (TeniPuriFesta 2011 in Budoukan) everyone from Higa sang together, and it looked fun.  Shingaki: Right. There’s a song on Kite’s album Faith called Chuba Fighters where we all sing. It was planned for the five of us from the beginning, but we wanted to ask Shiranui and Aragaki’s actors Inoue Suguru and Kako Rion to participate too. Only the five of us were at the event, but we said selfish things like “can’t seven people sing it?” Our dream of singing it with everyone was realized on the album! Sasaki: I participated in the event, but everyone was teamed up with their schools, so I felt very jealous. I’d like to gather all 5 Yamabuki members and sing together next time. Shingaki: Maybe the time has finally come when Akutsu understands the power of friendship!

Akaya Kirihara x Reader
Title: I Really Like You Fluff No Warning
Akaya was not listening to a word you were saying, he was to busy admiring your beauty. He had a huge crush on you even though you were two years older than him. You were his tutor for some of his classes, and he enjoyed spending every moment that wasn’t tennis with you. Right now you were hovering over his shoulder explaining a certain problem to him. He would have listened if his heart wasn’t racing, and the thoughts of him kissing you weren’t there.
“Got it?” You asked, turning your head only to meet Akaya eyes. You blinked as he didn’t respond to you, and you sighed softly moving away from the younger male. You placed a hand on your waist, and that’s when Akaya snapped out of his trance.
“Huh yeah, got it yep totally,” Akaya said becoming flustered, you sighed softly.
“Akaya you weren’t listening to a word I was saying were you?” You asked, and Akaya rubbed his neck embarrassed.
“S-Sorry I was deep in thought.” He said with that famous grin, you rolled your eyes before packing your bag. Akaya was confused about why you were suddenly packing up, he looked at the time and it has only been an hour normally you stay for about two or three hours.
“Whatever. I am going home.” You say throwing your bookbag over your shoulder. Akaya abruptly stood up before blocking your way with his arms spread out.
“Why so soon?” Akaya asked, and you crossed your arms narrowing your eyes.
“You haven’t been listening to a word I said this week. It’s frustrating if you don’t want help or want to pass your classes let me know. I have other students that need help, and I am busy doing other things. I don’t take lightly that my time has been wasted on you Akaya.” Akaya flinched at the words you said, his arms dropped to his sides. He had to admit he hadn’t been listening to you, but that’s only because it was hard to focus when you were so perfect. Now he knew how you felt though, you saw him as a burden that you had to tutor.
“You think I wasted your time?” Akaya asked you had been tutoring him since he started school at Rikkaidai. The teachers said you were the best to tutor him and you continued to tutor him as you went into high school.
“When you don’t listen to me, yes I do. Don’t get me wrong I love tutoring the students, and I enjoy tutoring you but you have been out of it. It’s a busy week for me too, if you don’t want to study let me know.” You say walking around Akaya. He stood in the doorway, with his back turned away from you. He balled his hands into a fist, he felt so stupid. He should have listened to all of the lessons you were helping him with.
~Next Day~
You finished tutoring a student about after school ended. Ayato the boy that was in your class also your best friend gave you a tight hug.
“You have always been a huge help, I am passing all of my classes because of you.”
“I am glad some people listen to me when I tutor them.” You say, Ayato grabbed all of the stuff as he listened to you.
“What’s wrong?”
“Do you remember Akaya?”
“Yeah, the boy you tutored for like two years now right?”
“Yeah him, I have been tutoring him all week, and he has not listened to me at all. Yesterday I got so upset with him that I left before my normal time that I leave.”
“Wow, maybe he was entranced by your beauty,” Ayato said you rolled your eyes nudging him.
“Oi don’t be weird.”
“I am just saying, you are really pretty. You remember that time a lot of boys were asking you to tutor them was just because they wanted to spend time with you. Maybe in the two years, he spent with you he developed a crush on you and wants to spend some time with you that’s not tutoring.” You both walked out of the library, you rubbed your temple glancing at Ayato and you realized he was serious.
“So you are saying there is a high chance that he likes me?”
“Yepp.”
“I am so glad I have you as a best friend, but what do I do? I think of him as a younger brother nothing more.”
“That’s going to hurt his pride.”
“What do I do?”
“No idea, I don’t date. You know this, I may be a man but I don’t date.”
“It was worth the shot. You helped a l~”
“Oi (Y/N) Senpai~” You sighed turning around to see the sweet boy who you two were both talking about.
“Yes, Akaya?”
“I have a proposition for you. I challenge you to a tennis match if I win we hang out without study and you still help me study someday. Maybe even go out with me and be my girlfriend.” Akaya said Ayato snorted slightly smirking at you as you sweat dropped.
“Akaya that’s not fair she doesn’t play tennis.” One of his tennis mates, Niou said.
“So what do you say (Y/N)?” Akaya asked. Only three people knew you played tennis and that was Ayato, Seiichi and Sanada, the three of you played all-star tennis with the boys because your skills weren’t fair to be on the girl’s team. Seiichi and Yukimura went to the all-star camps.
“What do I get in return?” You asked everyone’s eyes widen in shock.
“You don’t have to hang out with me or go out with me. So we keep everything the same but I will listen to when you tutor me.”
“You are on.” You say handing Ayato your bag before using one of the regulars rackets.
“Are you sure (Y/N)?” Bunta asked and you give him a smile.
“Yeah, I am positive.”,
“You can serve first,” Akaya said you raised an eyebrow. He took his position and you simply bounced the ball several times.
“Akaya is so screwed.” Ayato said.
“How?” Jackal asked, and Ayato simply smiled.
“She is a tennis player. She is an all-star tennis player for the guys. She can’t play with the girls because her tennis game is that of a professional guy’s game.” Ayato said.
“If that’s the case, Akaya stands no chance,” Yugyuu said adjusting his glasses. You tossed the ball in the air and hit the ball with a fast an amazing serve. Akaya wasn’t expecting it to be that fast and he couldn’t even move his arm to hit the ball back. You had served the ball directly to him as well.
“Her father is Nanjiro Echizen, and her younger brother is Ryoma Echizen,” Ayato said the eyes of the regulars widen looking at her.
“Fifteen Love,” Seiichi said Akaya stood straight.
“That was amazing. I may not need to go easy.” Akaya said still not getting it.
“You go easy, and you will be crushed actually, either way, you will be. I can’t date you no matter what.” You say bouncing the ball again.
“Why is that?” Akaya asked as you served the ball and this time he was able to return the ball.
“I see you as a baby brother. Nothing more.” You say hitting the ball back with power that made Akaya have trouble returning it.  Akaya frowned at what you said, and he sighed softly as you scored another point by doing a lob over his head that stopped right on the line. His eyes widen as he looked at the ball was right on the line.
“Thirty Love,” Seiichi said Akaya shook his head. He was not able to focus, the fact you only saw him as a brother made his heartbreak. It was Akaya turn to serve, but he simply stopped. You blinked before seeing him put his racket away.
“You aren’t going to serve?”
“What’s the point? The only reason I challenged you because I thought maybe just maybe I had a chance. That maybe you liked me as much but now I know I’m only a little brother.” Akaya said you placed a hand on your hip.
“I’m sorry Akaya, plus you need to date girls your age.” You say placing a hand on his shoulder. He looked up shaking his head.
“I don’t think me ever wanting to date other girls is going to come because I love you,” Akaya confesses and you sighed softly.
“Akaya, this is just a silly crush, once a girl your age that is perfect comes by you will forget you ever had a crush on me.”
“Nope, I am telling you I won’t, but if you don’t like me back no sense in dreading on it. I will just love you from afar.” Akaya said, you looked at Ayato who was looking away leaving you on your own.
“Akaya I know this isn’t going to help, but you stood no chance against (Y/N),” Seiichi said standing beside him.
“Why?”
“I go to the All-Star camp and she plays with the boys. In fact, she is the captain of the All-Star camp.” Seiichi said.
“Yep and I am the co-captain. Good to see you Seiichi, I Sanada.” Ayato said, and Seiichi smiled and Sanada nodded their head. Akaya blinked several times before looking at you before looking down. You gave him a gentle hug, and you rubbed his back. He returned the hug and you hummed softly.
“But if you want to hang out besides studying I can do that.” You say and Akaya nods his head.
“I guess that’s better than nothing. I am sorry (Y/N).”
“Don’t be, so how about I treat everyone out to lunch today?” You ask.
“Yeah, free food is the best food!” Bunta said hugging you.
“By you treat you actually mean me don’t you (Y/N)?” Ayato asked, you gave him a giant smile and you gave him a heart.
“Of course because you are the best.” You say and Ayato sighed softly.
“To be fair you owe me a lot of money due to the interest that’s been accumulating for the past year.” Ayato paled slightly and you gave him a smile.
“Never ever borrow money from (Y/N).” Ayato warned them.
“I already did,” Niou said and you gave him a smile.
“You did don’t worry you accumulated interest too.”
“You now owe me 5464.75 yen ($50 google answer it could be wrong).”
“I only borrowed 546.48 yen ($5)!” Niou claimed whining.
“WHY IS HIS INTEREST SO MUCH LOWER!” Ayato exclaimed.
“He is a middle school he can’t make much money like you can.” You stick your tongue out as you guys walked to get burgers. You noticed Akaya walking slower than the rest of the group, so you slowed down and fell in step with the younger male.
“Akaya?” You asked softly after the others were farther away from you to, Akaya didn’t look at you.
“Are you still upset about what I said?” You asked, and Akaya nodded his looking up at you.
“If I still love you when I hit high school, will you possibly give me a chance then?” He asked, you sighed softly, when he is a freshman you would be a senior.
“Maybe, it depends on if I am not dating, and if I develop feelings that’s not brotherly for you.” You say, Akaya gave a smile and you smiled back.
“Can I ask one more favor?” Akaya asked, and you nodded your head.
“Sure go ahead.”
“Can you please kiss me, I know it won’t mean anything to you, but I want my first kiss to be with you.” You eyes widen, and you saw the giant blush on his cheeks. You looked and saw that everyone had left you two behind.
“Akaya...I…”
“I know, and I don’t mind. I just want you to be my first kiss.” Akaya said quickly, you sighed softly before nodding your head.
“Very well then, don’t tell anyone though.”
“I won’t, I promise.” He said quickly, you leaned in placing a kiss on his lips. Akaya closed his eyes enjoying the feeling of your lips against his. He leaned closer into the kiss, and he licked your bottom lip wanting entrance. You knew what you wanted, and you denied him the access. He whined a bit as you pulled away from the kiss but he gently held your face.
“You don’t want to do that Akaya.”
“I do please.”
“Akaya, if you find the one you love you wouldn’t be able to tell her she was your first kiss or first time making out.” You said walking away but Akaya grasped your hand gently.
“Please...I know if that happens I don’t mind.” He said in a pleading voice; you let a shaky breath out before placing a kiss on his lips again. He licked your bottom lip, and this time your parted your lips allowing his tongue to enter. He let a soft moan into the kiss as he explored your warm cavern. You felt a blush dust your cheeks, and you pulled away once again. This time Akaya was satisfied as he was in a trance. \“You are amazing kisser (Y/N) senpai.” Akaya said, you laughed softly before ruffling his hair.
“Let’s go before they come looking for us.” You say leading him to the burger bar, Akaya had a wide smile on his face. Once you both arrived at the burger joint you sat beside Ayato as Akaya sat further down by Bunta. Ayato leaned close to your hear before whispering.
“So did you fulfill at least one of his wishes?” He asked, and you nodded your head before holding two.
“Yeah, he insisted he wanted me to be his first kiss and first make out. He also asked if he hit highschool if I would give him a chance. I said if circumstances change, it will depend on if I am not dating, and I don’t see him as a brother.” You said, Ayato laughed softly patting your shoulder.
“You got your work cut out for you.”
“Shut up.” You say with a small smile, but Ayato poked your leg and nodded his head to the side. You followed his gaze only to be met with Akaya’s eyes staring at you with a blushed cheeks, and a wide smile. You gave him a gentle smile, and he quickly looked away growing shy once again.
“Oh boy.”

“Y/N! Mikoto! Come down here please!”
Hearing your mom calling your name, you set your pencil down and headed into the hall, nearly colliding with your younger brother. You descended the stairs, standing in the doorway of the kitchen.
Your mom glanced over her shoulder before turning back to dinner. “Mom just called, she needs help moving a mirror to the living room. Someone is coming to look at it tomorrow, and she can’t move it herself.”
“Sure, mom~” The two of you chorused before heading to the entryway to slip your shoes on.
“Do you think she means that really creepy mirror in the guest room?” Mikoto whispered as he slipped on his sneakers, not wanting her to overhear him. “I bet it’s haunted.”
“There are no such things as spirits, Miko, we’ve been over this.” you rolled your eyes, slipping on your boots before pushing the front door open. The chilly October air greeted you, nipping at your face and hands.
“But if spirits did exist, they would totally exist in that mirror.” He leaned forward. “You don’t find it creepy?”
“Well… I guess it is kind of creepy,” you mused, tapping your chin with your index finger.
Your grandmother lived only four houses down from yours, so you arrived rather quickly and knocked on the door. She pushed it open and ushered you both inside, offering some hot cocoa to warm you both up. The smell of chocolate chip cookies filled her house.
“I’ve just put the cookies in the oven. They should be done by the time you move the mirror,” she smiled, putting her arms around both of you. “Thank you so much for the help, my dears.” With a gentle peck to your forehead and then his, she retreated over to the oven.
“Let’s get this over with,” you said softly, not wanting the older woman to overhear.
He nodded, following you into the guest room at the back of the house. You flicked the light on, feeling a drop of sweat roll down your cheek as you glanced at the tall mirror leaning against the wall, a faded white sheet thrown over it. You tugged the sheet off, letting it pool to the wooden floor.
The wooden frame was faded and chipped in multiple places. The glass was scratched and had the remnants of old stickers stuck to it. It looked like a simple old mirror, but looking at it gave you the chills.
“How should we…?”
You stood beside it. “Get on the other end and carefully push it over. It’ll be easier to carry if we turn it on its side.”
Mikoto nodded, his hands carefully holding onto the side of the mirror as he pushed it over. You held the other side, not letting it hit the ground. He bent down, putting his hands under it as he lifted.
“It’s light,” he commented.
You nodded. “Yes, but be careful, okay?”
“Okay~”
You slowly walked backward, holding on tight to the mirror as your brother walked forward, a look of concentration on his face. You noticed the rug, careful not to trip over it.
“Miko, watch out for the – ”
Mikoto squeaked in surprise as his foot caught the rug and he stumbled, his upper body pushing the mirror forward. It slid across your hand and you felt a sharp pain, making you lose your grip. In seconds, the mirror crashed to the ground, the glass shattering across the floor.
The two of you exchanged a look, wincing.
Your grandma came rushing in as fast as her old legs would carry her, her eyes scanning the scene. “Oh dear, are the two of you okay?” she noticed you holding your hand, a look of pain on your face. She shuffled over, careful of the glass.
“I’m sorry!” Mikoto’s voice cracked as his eyes filled with tears. “It was my fault!”
“It wasn’t,” you insisted, giving him a smile. “I got a splinter and lost my grip…”
“It looks quite deep. Come into the kitchen and let’s get it out, dear,” she held your wrist and the three of you stepped around the glass, entering the kitchen. After shuffling around for the tweezers, she carefully pulled the splinter from your palm. The area was red and sore, but you knew it would heal quickly. She placed a spotted bandaid over the wound and smiled.
“I’m really sorry, grandma,” you told her, grabbing the broom and dustpan from the storage closet.
“It’s okay,” she smiled. “Let me clean it up, I don’t want you getting hurt anymore.”
“No, I’ve got it. I’ll be careful, I promise!” you kissed her cheek before heading into the hall.
Mikoto stood nearby, watching you with a frown. “Isn’t it bad luck to break mirrors?”
“Seven years,” you answered without much thought, regretting it instantly as a worried look flashed across his face. “But don’t you worry, it’s just superstition.” You placed your hand on his head, ruffling his hair. “With this touch, I take all of your bad luck away!”
“You’re so lame, Y/N~” he pouted, the corners of his lips twitching upward.
With a smile, you got to work, careful to check under the furniture to make sure you got all of the glass.

The Autumn festival was arriving in Tokyo, bringing all manner of people to the city. Starting on the twenty-fifth, the festival ran until the thirty-first of October. It offered rides – such as the Ferris wheel and bumper cars -, food stalls – mos of which offered scary-looking eyeball shaped items and drinks made to look like blood -, and various game stalls – like the dime pitch or the shooting game. The festival opened at four-thirty in the afternoon and remained open until well after midnight.
As someone that loved the month of October and Halloween with every fiber of your being, you fully intended to visit the festival every single day that it was in town, but life had other plans for you.
On the day the festival arrived, you had rushed out of your classroom, feeling excited, but that left you open to the science teacher that was passing by as you ran from the room. She stopped you, asking if you would help her carry the new science books from the office to the science lab. You were raised not to dismiss someone in need, so you reluctantly agreed to help. When you got there, in your haste to leave, you spilled a substance in a glass jar on her desk. Naturally, you had to stay and help her clean it up. It was pretty late by the time you finished, and you had to get home to help your mom with dinner.
The next day, a storm rolled in so the festival was closed until it passed, which it did at five the next morning.
On the third day, Mikoto was throwing up and had to stay home from school. Since both of your parents had to work, you stayed home from school, as well, and took care of him well into the night.
On the fourth day, in your haste to get to the festival, you tripped on a piece of sidewalk that was sticking out of the ground, spraining your ankle. You couldn’t put much pressure on it for two days.
On the sixth day, all Hallow’s eve, you were determined the make it to the festival, but the food you had eaten that morning had other plans. You spent most of the day in the bathroom with bad diarrhea.
Were you cursed? Was this some divine punishment for sins you committed in a previous life? Or was the superstition that breaking a mirror really did bring about bad luck true?
You were beginning to wonder, but the game wasn’t over yet. You had one more day.
October 31st
You kept glancing at the clock on the wall, but time seemed to be passing at a snail’s pace. The teacher droned on and on about one thing or another, but you didn’t register anything he said. Your mind was racing with thoughts about what had happened over the past week and what might yet happen.
No matter what, you would get to the festival. Nothing was going to stop you.
Tick, tock.
“Now, I’d like to take a moment to – ”
Tick, tock.
“And don’t forget to – ”
Tick, tock.
“I expect you all to – ”
Tick, tock.
The bell finally rang, echoing through the school like an angry banshee.
You jumped up, clutching your pre-packed bag to your chest. You were out of the room before the bell finished ringing. That’s when your challenge began.
Your plan was to avoid all of the other students and teachers – if they didn’t see you, they couldn’t ask you for help – while being careful of your footing so you didn’t trip again. The night before, you had made a nutritious meal packed full of vitamins for your brother, so you were confident that he wouldn’t get sick. As for yourself, you had skipped both breakfast and lunch to avoid any disagreements they might have with your stomach.
You were ready for anything!
You slowly peeked around the corner, eyes scanning the hallway. Although you had been the first one to leave the classroom, your sneaking around to avoid everyone made you one of the last people to leave the school. There were a few stragglers left behind.
The hallway was clear, so you ran as fast as you could, crouching behind a large round trashcan. The shoe lockers were just around the corner. All you had to do was pass that level and then face the boss – getting past the school gate.
Two girls were standing by the lockers, chatting about their plans to take their siblings trick-or-treating. Your eye twitched. ‘Just go home already!’
Several minutes passed before they finally left, their voices fading.
You peeked around the corner to make sure no one else was there. ‘Okay, Y/N, time to go for the record!’ you jumped around the corner, yanking the locker open and switching your shoes at lightning speed. You could hear voices approaching and your head snapped to the courtyard. There were still students floating around the gate and the voices behind you were getting closer.
You were being boxed in.
‘I have to make a run for it, there’s no other option!’ your feet pushed off the ground just as two boys rounded the corner. Cold air whipped around your body as you ran, your mind focusing on your feet so you didn’t trip over air like you had before.
The gate was right in front of you and steadily getting closer. Just a little bit farther and you’d be free.
A hand grabbed the back of your shirt, tugging you backward. With a squeak, your foot slipped out from underneath you as you fell back against a strong chest, arms wrapping around your body to steady you. You glanced over your shoulder, meeting the violet eyes of Rikkaidai’s self-proclaimed tensai, Marui Bunta.
He grinned at you as if he hadn’t just given you a big fat ‘game over’. “What’s the rush, Y/N-chan~?”
Jackal stood next to him, sending him a pointed look. “You shouldn’t grab people like that! Are you okay, Y/N? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
You scowled at Marui, pulling yourself from his arms before addressing Jackal. “I’m okay, but I really need to get going. Please excuse me.”
Marui’s threw his arm over your shoulder, preventing you from moving. “Do you have a date we don’t know about, Y/N-chan?” he wiggled his eyebrows with a grin, blowing a bubble with his mint gum.
You could feel your window of opportunity closing and you kept glancing at the gate like a trapped animal ready to dash. “I’m going to the festival with -”
“We’re going too!” Marui declared. “Let’s go together!”
“What? No, I -”
But he wasn’t listening as he dragged you out of the gate with Jackal following close behind, trying to convince him to let you go. You frowned, chewing on your bottom lip. So far, every single failed attempt to get to the festival involved you going there alone to meet someone. Was this the secret? Did you just have to visit the festival with someone? You glanced at the two as they bantered back and forth.
‘It’s always easy to get lost in the crowd at festivals. You see it happen all the time in shoujou anime. When we get there, I’ll just sneak away and go see Ryoma!’ you thought with a renewed excitement.
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
The three of you made it to the festival without incident. You were so happy to be standing at the entrance that you wanted to cry, letting your eyes take in the scene of the happy festival-goers. There was a problem, though.
Marui’s arm was wrapped around your own and he refused to let you get away.
You tried to pull your arm free, making like you were heading for one of the game stalls, but his grip tightened as he said. “I don’t want you to get lost!”
You even tried to bathroom excuse, but he insisted on escorting you there.
Having two younger brothers made Marui quite a protective person, and he regarded you like family.
‘What do I do now?’ you frowned. You were happy to have made it to the festival and you did love both Marui and Jackal, but you wanted to experience the festival at your own pace, not Marui’s. You also wanted to find Ryoma, who you had desperately been trying to see over the past week.
Your phone buzzed. It was a new message from Ryoma.
✉ ‘Did you finally made it to the festival?’
You bit your lip, typing a quick reply. ‘I did but… I’m being dragged around by Marui…’
✉ ‘Che’
Your frown deepened. You could feel his annoyance through that one word and you honestly felt guilty, knowing he was feeling that way because of you. The two of you went to different schools in different prefectures, so you didn’t get to see the short boy that you had fallen head over heels for very often. Both of you had been expecting to spend the festival together, but day after day, something happened that prevented you from going.
As you passed by the haunted house, you suddenly had a brilliant idea. You tugged on Marui’s arm, pointing at the attraction with a grin. “Let’s go in there!”
His body visibly stiffened, his face going pale as a scream sounded from the entrance. “A-Are you sure you want to go in th-there?”
You suppressed a smirk, tilting your head to the side. “Yeah! You can’t come to the Autumn festival without checking out the haunted house.”
Jackal caught onto your plan. “Sounds like fun, let’s go!” He pushed his friend toward the entrance with some difficulty since Marui’s heels were firmly digging into the ground.
Another scream ripped through the air, followed by the cackle of a witch. You could see Marui’s soul leaving his body as his head fell back. Jackal gave you a nod and a kind smile, slipping his arm around Marui’s own. You gave him a thankful smile, tugging your arm free before you turned tail and ran in the opposite direction. Once you were a safe distance away from the haunted house, your body started to relax, your eyes sweeping over the scenery around you.
“Y/N.”
You turned around, eyes meeting those cat-like eyes belonging to Ryoma. Without hesitation, you threw yourself at him, arms wrapping around his neck so you could bring him close to you. “I missed you so much, Ryoma.”
He scowled, fighting back the blush that was creeping across his cheeks. “Where’s Marui?”
“I managed to ditch him at the haunted house with some help from Jackal,” you grinned, letting him pull back. You knew he wasn’t fond of affectionate displays.
He started to walk toward the back of the festival and you slipped your hand in his, lacing your fingers together. The throngs of people began to thin out and the loud sounds faded as he brought you farther away from the festival. You were slightly disappointed, knowing that it was the last day to experience everything it had to offer, but feeling Ryoma’s warm hand in yours made it worth it.
He found a nice patch of grass and laid down, folding his arms behind his head. You settled down beside him, your cheek resting against your palm as your eyes scanned his face – his cat-like eyes always full of mischief, his long lashes, and his soft lips. He was gorgeous in your eyes. You reached forward, gently brushing the hair from his eyes.
“You should transfer to Seigaku.”
“It’s a bit late for that, don’t you think?” you chuckled. “Maybe when I graduate I’ll try and pass the entrance exam for Seishun High. It’ll be hell trying to get away from the tennis team, though.”
He scowled at the mention of them, feeling jealousy tugging at his heart. “I don’t like how close they are to you.”
“Aww, are you jealous~?” you teased, poking his warm cheek. He scoffed, knocking your hand away. “There’s nothing to worry about. Those guys are like family to me.”
Ryoma hummed, closing his eyes, but he didn’t comment.
You glanced up at the black, velvety sky, lit up by dozens of twinkling stars. “Hey, Ryoma?”
“Hm?”
“Do you believe in bad luck?”
He raised a brow, looking at you curiously. You told him about the mirror you and your brother had broken and how you were starting to think that it was behind the string of bad events that had kept you two apart over the past week. “Isn’t a mirror seven years of bad luck?”
“Actually, I took Mikoto’s bad luck, too…”
“Fourteen years of bad luck.”
“Y-Yeah, but that’s just superstition… right?” you both exchanged a look. “I’m gonna end up being that crazy old person with a string of garlic around their neck and a horseshoe above every door…”
Ryoma laughed at the mental image that provided. “Don’t forget the rabbit’s feet and four-leaf clovers.” Your pointed look made him smirk. “Even if you become some crazy superstitious person with fourteen years of bad luck coming for you, I’ll still love you, Y/N.”
Your lips tugged up on their own as you leaned over him, tugging on the hem of his shirt. “You better~”
“I promise,” he whispered, closing the distance between you.
Just before your lips met, a familiar scream broke through the night air, followed closely by a crying fuschia-haired boy who was shrieking your name as if his life depended on it. It made you jump up, thinking something was wrong, but Marui tripped, slamming his body into yours. You both hit the ground.
“Y/N! Th-There are gh-ghosts here! This place is haunted! We need to leave!” Marui cried, clinging to you like a child as tears streamed down his face. Jackal came running up a moment later, sweatdropping at the scene.
You sent Ryoma an apologetic smile, but he was too busy staring at Marui in annoyance. ‘Definitely bad luck…’

“I’m late! Ryoma’s going to kill me if I miss his match,” You groaned, pushing your legs to move faster. The boy in question had an important match that day, one you had promised to attend, but since you had stayed up so late studying for the test on Monday, you slept in and were running late. When you finally arrived at the stadium, he was halfway through his match with Rikkai’s emperor, Sanada. It was a tough match to watch, both sides struggling to win and carrying the weight of their team, but Ryoma came out on top in the end, winning seven games to five.
You caught his eye and smiled before turning away. He needed to celebrate the victory with his team first, so you decided to head outside to the vending machines. You had planned to buy a Ponta for the both of you to congratulate him, but in your haste to get to the match, you had forgotten your wallet. You fell onto the bench with a groan, hanging your head in defeat.
Ryoma paused a few feet away, his cat-like eyes observing you. It was windy that day, your hair flowing in the breeze like it was in water, your clothes ruffling. In his eyes, you were breathtaking. He felt his cheeks heating up and he scoffed, tugging down his cap. He kept his head down as he approached the machines.
“You forgot your wallet, didn’t you.”
You rubbed the back of your head with a sheepish grin. “Seems so…”
“Catch,”
You reacted just in time to catch the ice-cold drink before it hit your shoulder. “Thank you, Ryoma~”
He sighed, letting his lips curl up into a smile. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Love me forever?” You formed a heart with your hands, laughing when he turned away from you. “You were amazing, Ryoma. The match had me on the edge of my seat. It was like I was watching an action movie!”
“It wasn’t that great,” He murmured.
“Wrong!” You tsked at him, poking his cheek. “Your tennis is always amazing!”
Despite himself, he smiles and gently grabbed your hand as you both headed for the exit of the venue. You entwined your fingers with his. “Why were you late, anyway?”
“I forgot to study for the test Friday,” you pouted, swinging your hands between the two of you, “So I had to study last night instead.”
Ryoma suddenly stopped walking, looking at you in surprise. “Test?”
You nodded slowly, lips curling up into a grin. “Ryoma~ Did you forget about the history test tomorrow?”
“Che,” he looked away from you and you giggled, pulling him into a hug.
“It’s okay, we can study together!”
He fought the urge to sigh – he’d rather do anything but study, but he was willing to endure it as long as you were there with him. He smiled, pecking your lips. “I failed the last test, by the way.”
You facepalmed, “What am I going to do with you~?”
He just smirked, pulling his cap down. “Consider it payment for the drink.
You giggled, rushing after him. “Deal!”

⁂ I Will Protect You (Kaoru Kaidoh) [1 of 2]
Tumblr media
Genre: Angst, Romance, Dark, Comedy ☁
Word Count: 6,289 ☁
Pairing: Reader x Kaidoh ☁
World: Prince of Tennis ☁
WARNING: This fic contains abuse, both mental and physical.
Author’s Note: The reader is thought to be a boy but is actually a girl. Not sure why, but I felt the need to mention this! Also, holy shit why is this so long. I thought it would be around three thousand, but it was doubled, damn.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
You internally groaned when you stepped outside, feeling the heat rays beating down on you. It was hot enough as is, but the long sleeves and male slacks that you wore made it feel twenty times more hot than it actually was. The other students sent you a weird look as they passed, whispering amongst themselves. And why wouldn’t they? You never wore anything but long sleeves and pants, even on the hottest of days. You didn’t understand why they still acted so surprised; you had been dressing like this since your first year, and now, here you were in the middle of your second year.
You sighed, feeling like the weight of the world was beating down on you. You readjusted the bag on your shoulder before continuing towards the school gate. Honestly, you didn’t want to return home; you’d rather be anywhere else in the world, but you knew the consequences for returning home late, even if it was just by a minute or two.
You were so caught up in your thoughts that you didn’t notice two piercing eyes threatening to burn holes in your side.
When you were finally out of his sight, Kaidoh let out a hiss. His body was so jumbled with different emotions that he couldn’t even put a name to everything he was currently feeling. He had been your seatmate since your first year, almost as if fate had wanted the two of you to remain close. To further push that idea, he lived in your neighborhood, just a few houses down.
You had never been close with each other, but you did consider each other a friend. On the rare occasion that he didn’t have practice, the two of you would walk home together in silence – awkward for him, but peaceful for you. You often got paired up to do assignments together, as well.
Kaidoh didn’t know when it had started, he just knew that it had at some point. Somewhere along the road, he had started to develop feelings for you. He wanted to get to know you, but his attempts always failed. He never knew what to ask or how to ask, and when he finally did get up the courage, you usually just answered with a short or vague answer. You never meant to be rude, but you already had so much weighing down your mind that you just never realized what he was attempting to do.
Honestly, Kaidoh felt pretty torn about the whole situation. He wasn’t too interested in dating, since tennis is his first love, and he had never paid much attention to girls. Even so, he had always been sure that he was straight and only liked girls. So why did he fall for his male classmate? He couldn’t wrap his mind around it. Was he gay? Was he just curious?
The regulars easily noticed the change in Kaidoh over the past few weeks. How could they not? They spent practically every single day with the second year. Hell, they probably knew him better than he knew himself! And so, the Seigaku regulars set out on a quest to find the source of his distraction and help him solve the problem that he hadn’t yet realized he had.
“Ouch! You elbowed me in the ribs, Eiji!”
“Nya~ Sorry, Oishi!”
“Not so loud, senpai!”
“Probability of being detected: 100%”
“Saa, I think you’re right, Inui.”
A tick mark appeared under Kaidoh’s right eye as he heard the noise coming from the bushes behind him. His hands balled into fists at his side, his knuckles turning white from the restraint it took not to yell at them and hit Momoshiro – because not even Kaidoh would go so far as to hit his senpai.
“This is ridiculous,”
“Oi, Echizen!” Momo tried to grab onto the first year before he could leave their hiding place, but he was too quick and easily dodged the attempt.
Ryoma approached his senpai was a blank expression. “Who is he?”
Kaidoh narrowed his eyes at the shorter boy. “What?”
“That boy you were watching. Who is he?”
The viper felt his heart rate increase, though he couldn’t tell if it was because of you being mentioned or the fact that the tennis team had seen him staring you down as you left – for all he knew, it could be a combination of both. “N-None of your business!”
The regulars watched as the viper quickly stomped away from the group.
“Probability that the boy is the cause of his distraction: 99.9%”
“Do you know who he is, Inui?” Fuji questioned, tilting his head to the side.
Inui paled, pushing up his glasses with an index finger. He was too ashamed to admit that he didn’t have any information on the boy in question. You were an enigma, even to the data specialist.
“How interesting~” Fuji chuckled after gauging his reaction.
“I know he’s a second year.” Momo supplied, putting his hand on his chin. “I think I’ve seen him in Mamushi’s class before.”
“Data,” Inui muttered to himself, quickly scribbling away in his little black book. The others sweatdropped at his reaction, while Fuji simply laughed.
“Well, if we’re going to solve this problem, we’ll just have to learn more about him!” Oishi declared with a smile.
If you had known about the sudden storm that would descend upon you like the wrath of the gods, you probably would have just fled the country, but you were completely clueless about the plans of the Seigaku regulars.

The next morning, you quietly gathered your things and got dressed for school. Your mother was still sleeping, and you knew there’d be hell to pay if you woke her up by being too loud. It didn’t help that she slept as light a feather – you breathe wrong and the woman wakes up!
You slowly descended the stairs, careful to avoid that one creaky step in the middle – it had been your downfall many times in the past, and you had learned the hard way to avoid it at all costs. You made it downstairs without a problem and set your bag gently on the floor by the door.
‘Almost free’, you thought. All you had to do was make a quick piece of toast and then you’d be out of there. You crossed your arms as you waited, your finger tapping your upper arm impatiently as you watched the timer on the toaster oven. You easily caught it before it could ding, pulling out the hot piece of toast and placing it onto a paper towel. You celebrated mentally, happy to have gotten out of the house without waking the beast that lived upstairs, but it seems you celebrated too soon.
Right as you reached for the door handle, you heard your name being screamed as your mother came rushing down the stairs. Her hair was tussled and messy from sleep and her eyes were narrowed angrily. Your mind screamed at you to run – the door was literally within arm’s reach – but you were frozen to the spot.
“You didn’t feed the damn cat and he woke me up!” She screamed at you.
Your eyes glanced down at her feet where a light gray, pudgy cat was sitting. If they could have expressions, you were sure that his would be smug for getting you into trouble.
You gulped down the piece of toast in your mouth before speaking. “Y-You said not to go in your room…”
“Don’t backtalk me!” She grabbed your arm tightly and you winced in pain. “You know you’re supposed to feed the cat, stupid girl!” She ripped the hat off your head and threw it to the ground. “Your hair is starting to get too long! Boys are supposed to have short hair, not long, get it cut before you walk in this house again!”
“I-I don’t have any money…” You mumbled pathetically, the stinging in your arm causing tears to cloud your vision.
Before you could blink, she backhanded you, sending you crashing back against the door behind you. You winced in pain when you hit the rather large bruise on your back. “You expect me to pay? After everything you’ve done?”
Tears rolled down your cheeks as your face stung in unison with your arm. Your hands clenched around your slacks as you cried out, “What have I done, mother? What have I done to deserve this?”
The look your mother sent you was terrifying, full of hatred and malice. She stepped closer, leaning over so her face was inches away from your own. “You killed your father. He died because he wanted a son! You were nothing but a disappointment! He killed himself because of you!”
“He died in a car crash,” You tried to reason with her.
She spit in your face before standing up straight. “He never would have been in that car if you hadn’t made him leave. He was tired of you!”
Your whole body was shaking, your face a red blotchy mess as tears fell from your eyes and sobs wracked your body. You were in so much pain, you didn’t know what to do. You felt so lost, so useless.
“Get out of my house!”
You scrambled up as quick as you could, nearly tripping as you rushed out the door. You only made it a block or so before you tripped, your body falling to the heated pavement with a thud. It was the middle of the week, so most of the surrounding houses were empty, the area quiet.
You didn’t try to get up. What would be the point? You certainly couldn’t walk into school like that, there’d be too many questions and you couldn’t just say you tripped. If they called your mother, you knew your punishment would be even worse.
Your hand clawed at the pavement as fresh tears blurred your eyes and fresh sobs began to shake your body. You didn’t understand why this was happening to you. Had you done something in a previous life to warrant such punishment? You felt so weak, so drained. You were beginning to wonder if all of this abuse was worth it.
‘No, I can’t think like that!’, you pounded the ground with your fist. You were not going to let your mother win. You would remain strong. One day this will all be over and you’ll be far away from her, living a normal and happy life. You couldn’t let go of that hope – it was all you had.
“O-Oi!” A voice stuttered from behind you. “Are you okay?!”
You looked over your shoulder to see a tall figure, but the tears blurred his face. You quickly swiped them away with the back of your hand. It was your seatmate, Kaidoh, who was now kneeling beside you with a worried and panicked expression on his face.
Of all the people to see you in such a state, it just had to be the boy who had stolen your heart all those years ago. You figured you didn’t stand a chance with him, though. He thought you were a boy, after all, and your mother would never let you be happy. You still had four and half more years before you could rebuild your life and find happiness.
He grabbed your upper arm to get your attention and you winced, making him release you. His grip had been gentle, but he had grabbed the same spot that your mother had. On top of that, the old bruise from a week ago hadn’t fully disappeared and was still a little sore to the touch.
“S-Sorry,” He muttered, his cheeks taking on a slight hue of pink.
“It’s not your fault,” You tried to smile, but couldn’t find the energy.
“What hap – ”
“Aren’t you late for tennis practice, Kaidoh-kun?” You cut him off, hoping to distract him from the current situation.
He paled a bit when you reminded him of his lateness, but he didn’t leave like you had expected. “I can’t leave you like this!”
“I just tripped, that’s all.” Your voice did little to help convince him – it was monotone, lifeless.
He scowled at you. “Do you think I’m an idiot?”
“W-What?” You stuttered in surprise, eyes wide at the question. That wasn’t what you meant at all! “O-Of course not!”
“That mark on your face is from a hand, not the pavement. Someone hit you.”
Your heart was racing, thumping loudly in your ear as you scrambled to come up with a lie he would actually believe. “I… I was mugged!”
His eyes grew wide like saucers at the information. “M-Mugged?!”
“Yeah! Yeah, that’s what happened! I refused to give up my bag so the guy slapped me!”
“We need to call the police!”
“No!” You hurried to your feet in a panic, only to trip over yourself. Strong arms wrapped around your middle, pulling you into a firm chest rather than the pavement. You cried out in pain, begging him to let you go. As soon as he did, you bolted away from him. He was too stunned to react in time.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
You stared at your face in the mirror, analyzing the large red welt on the side of your face. The color had dulled a bit, but it was still quite noticeable. Oh, how you wished you had makeup to cover it with, but since you were supposed to be a boy, your mother had forbidden you from wearing any type of makeup – even chapstick was forbidden.
“I guess I’ll just have to stick to the mugging story…” You muttered to yourself with a frown. You dug around in your bag, producing a bottle of pills. They were an over the counter pain medication that you had saved up for by helping the older woman next door weed her garden. Your back was killing you and you needed relief. You hoped it would help for the various bruises scattered across your torso and arms, as well.
Taking a deep breath, you threw your bag onto your shoulder and left the washroom, quickly thanking the school nurse before scurrying away. By the time you had reached the school, two of your four morning classes had ended.
The bell for the third period rang and you increased your pace, thanking the gods that your classroom was close to the nurse’s office. Your teacher had already begun roll call by the time you stepped inside, earning a glare from the man as he ordered you to take a seat. You were so thankful that he hadn’t given you detention.
You fell into your seat with a soft sigh, pulling out the book you needed for the class. It wasn’t even noon and you already felt completely exhausted. The hair on the back of your neck stood on end and you froze, slowly turning to the side to see a pissed off Kaidoh glaring at you. This wasn’t your first time seeing him angry – it was, after all, quite easy to get under the boy’s skin. But you had never seen him this angry. You wondered how you hadn’t missed the murderous aura he was giving off the second you sat down. You also noticed how the other students had quietly moved their desks farther away from the boy, clearly scared by how angry he was.
You swallowed hard, quickly averting your eyes to your desk. What were you going to do? He was clearly angry that you had blown him off and run away from him… how would you explain it? Had he kept to his word and called the police?
Kaidoh couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t angry. He was livid, but not particularly at his seatmate. He was angry that you had been mugged and acted like it was nothing. Someone had hurt you, and he wanted the bastard to pay for what he had done. He was angry that he had allowed someone to hurt the person he loved!
Oh
Kaidoh’s face turned bright red when he realized what he had just thought. Was he really in love with you? He had never cared so much about anyone else before, nor had he ever been so angry about something that happened to another person. Why were you so special?
He quickly threw his head down onto the desk, making an audible THUMP, but the surrounding students were too scared to say anything. They thought he was just getting more annoyed, but in reality, he was just trying to hide his blushing face.
Time seemed to pass by incredibly slow that day, though it probably didn’t help that you glanced at the clock every minute or two. You just wanted the day to be over so you could crawl under your covers and hide from the world. You had managed to successfully dodge Kaidoh the rest of the day, but he was looking determined not to let you slip away this time.
The bell finally rang and you sprang up, quickly grabbing your pre-packed bag and making a dash for the door. Kaidoh tried to grab the back of your uniform but he was an inch short and hit the floor instead, cursing loudly as he tried to chase after you. Your attention had diverted over your shoulder just long enough to judge the distance between the two of you.
Feeling confident that you had escaped, you looked forward again – only, you didn’t see the open doorway. Instead, you ran right into a white wall, sending you flying back onto your butt. Your classmates laughed at you, stepping over you and around the object that had stopped you.
Turns out it wasn’t a wall – it was the second year, Momoshiro, from the class next door. He blinked down at you curiously before rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
“Sorry about that,”
You stared at his extended hand, your mind still processing the events that had just taken place. By the time you realized, though, it was too late. Kaidoh was now blocking the door, glaring between you and Momo.
“Watch where you’re going, idiot.” He hissed.
“Huh?! He ran into me!” Momo defended himself.
“You should still watch where you’re going!”
“You wanna fight?!”
“Bring it on!”
You tried to crawl past the bickering boys, but Kaidoh was determined not to let you get away. He grabbed your arm and hauled you to your feet – thankfully, that arm didn’t have any bruises. Well, it did, but not in the place he had grabbed.
“You’re coming with me!”
“I-I can’t. I have to get home.” You tried to pry his hand away but he was too strong. “L-Let go of me!” You looked to Momo for help and he nodded. You thought you were saved… until Momo gently grabbed your other arm and helped his friend drag you out of the classroom. “W-Wait a minute! Where are you taking me? Let me go right this instant!”
Your demands went unanswered. Kaidoh didn’t even acknowledge that you were speaking, and Momoshiro only offered a grin. You had hoped that the students gathered in the halls would intervene, but they only stared like it was a normal thing.
‘What is wrong with these people?!’, you cried, ‘Mother is going to kill me tonight. This time for sure…’
You took a deep breath to calm your racing thoughts. You had to be calm and collected in order to think of a way to escape this. Your eyes glanced at each of their grips. Kaidoh’s right hand was holding your wrist, while his left was resting across your arm. Momo was holding your left arm, just below the elbow. You quickly realize that they were gripping the fabric of your long-sleeved shirt more than they were your arm.
You had your plan, but you knew it was going to be painful and difficult.
Taking another deep breath to calm your nerves, you slammed the heels of your shoes into the ground before sinking down. Your body was bent like you were about to do a high dive, allowing your arms to slip out of the sleeves of the sweatshirt as the boys kept walking. You felt the material slip over your head and you dashed in the opposite direction, trying to ignore the stinging in your arms.
You were very much aware of the air whipping around your now exposed skin; it felt weird to you since you hadn’t allowed your skin to feel any outside air for several years now.
“Get back here!”
You gulped, pushing your legs to run faster. This was your last chance – if they caught you now, your secret would be exposed. Maybe this hadn’t been such a good plan after all…
You turned the corner and quickly ducked into the first classroom you found, sliding the door shut as quickly and quietly as you could. Your heart hammered against your chest as their pounding steps drew closer, but they didn’t stop. They continued on until finally fading into the distance.
You didn’t even get the chance to calm down before someone called your name. You spun around to find Fuji Shuusuke, a third year, looking at you curiously from his position near the window. You had entered the photography room, the place that he frequently visited. You gulped down your nervousness and tried to sound calm and not like you had just escaped two angry and possibly crazy second years.
“H-Hello, Fuji-senpai.”
“Is everything alright?” He questioned with a small smile, setting his camera on the desk beside his bag.
“Of course! I thought this was a different room, I’ll be going now. Please excuse me!” You bowed, whipping back around.
“Hold it,” His voice was firm and it sent a chill down your spine.
“Y-Yes?”
“What happened to your arms?”
“What?” Your head whipped around so fast you were surprised you hadn’t given yourself whiplash. The tensai’s eyes were open, a sight you had never seen before, and he was staring at a rather large bruise on the back of your upper arm. He was frowning and even looked a little angry. “Oh, umm… I’m really… clumsy.”
His eyes narrowed as he approached you, gently grabbing your shoulder to turn you to face him. As your body was exposed to the light pouring in through the window, more bruises and scars became apparent to him, lining your skin like a bad rash.
You wanted to cry. No matter what lie you came up with, you knew it would be useless against this boy. Anyone else, maybe, but not the genius Fuji Shuusuke.
You were tired.
Tired of scrambling to make up lies.
Tired of hiding.
Tired of being scared.
Tired of hurting.
Tears welled up in your eyes, slowly pouring down your cheeks. Your shoulders shook from the effort it took to keep from sobbing out loud. Fuji called your name gently and you lost it, throwing your arms around his waist and burying your face in his white shirt. You didn’t care that you looked like a mess. You didn’t care that you didn’t really know this boy. You just wanted someone to hold you, someone to comfort you, someone to care.
His eyes widened in surprise for several reasons, but he quickly and gently wrapped his arms around you. He rubbed your hair and told you it would be okay, which only made you cry louder.
Your whole life was one big mess. How could things possibly be okay?

Kaidoh was ten times more frustrated when he reached the tennis courts. Even Momoshiro seemed tense.
“You’re both late,” Tezuka announced, arms folded across his chest and a stern look on his face.
“Sorry buchou,” Momo apologized. Kaidoh only hissed.
“Fifty laps,”
The two second years complied without their usual complaints, worrying the ever motherly vice-captain. “Something doesn’t feel right, Tezuka. Fuji isn’t here either.”
Yes, even the stoic captain had noticed the strange thickness hanging in the air today, like something bad was bound to happen.
A third year girl came running up to them, holding up her index finger as she tried to catch her breath. She was a bookworm, not an athlete, but because the information was deemed important, she decided to run to the courts instead of a nicely paced walk. Fuji really owed her one.
When she finally caught her breath, she regarded them with a shy smile. “Fuji-kun asked me to pass along a message to you, Tezuka-san. He said that something important has come up and he will be missing practice today and in the morning.”
Oishi looked at the girl with worry. “Did he say why?”
She shook her head and frowned. “No, but he seemed really upset.”
“Thank you.” Tezuka bowed and she took that as her sign to leave. She bowed to the two boys before turning around and walking leisurely back to her classroom. “There’s nothing we can do now. We’ll have to trust Fuji.”
Oishi bit his lip, hoping that nothing serious had happened.

You sniffled, tugging awkwardly at the jacket that now covered your body. Fuji had been kind enough to give you his Seigaku jacket to hide your arms since your sweater had been nowhere to be found. You glanced at his back since he was walking a few steps in front of you. You felt nervous, to say the least, and wondered if this was really okay.
He stopped in front of his house, pushing open the gate for you. He gave you an encouraging smile as you passed him, heading toward his front door. Why in the world had you agreed to this? You barely even knew this boy!
It was true, you were terrified, but not because of him or the thought of staying at his house.
No, the thought of returning home terrified you and, somehow, Fuji had realized that.
“Don’t worry, my family is very kind.” He commented, trying to ease your nervous mind as he pushed his front door open. You followed him inside, setting your shoes beside his own before following him into the kitchen.
A woman stood at the stove making dinner, humming softly to herself. Another woman, older than Fuji but younger than the first, was sitting at the table flipping through a magazine.
“I’m home,”
“Welcome home, Shuu – ” The older woman paused when she turned around, smiling at the girl beside him. “Shuusuke! You didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend over.”
“Saa, it was a bit last minute, kaa-san.”
The other woman grinned. “You finally got yourself a girlfriend, huh? She’s cute!”
You paled at the woman’s words, ‘H-How did she know I’m a girl…?’
“She’s just a friend, Yumiko-nee.”
Your wide eyes quickly snapped to him, ‘He knew too?!’
As if reading your mind, he shot you a grin before returning to his mother. “She was locked out of her house and her parents are out of town. Can she stay here tonight?”
His mother smiled. “Of course she can! Dinner will be ready soon, dear, I hope you like curry.”
“Y-Yes ma’am. Thank you.”
“Hmm, I’m curious though.” Yumiko put a manicured nail to her bottom lip as she looked you up and down. “Why are you dressed as a boy?”
“Don’t be rude to our guest, Yumiko.” Their mother scolded. “Shuusuke, why don’t you two go up to your room and get started on your homework? I’ll call you once dinner is done.”
The boy nodded, gripping your wrist lightly and leading you up the stairs to his bedroom. You remained quiet until you were safely inside his room, the door locked behind you. You turned toward him but refused to meet his eyes. Instead, you decided that his carpet was worth inspecting.
“How long have you known?”
“Hmm?”
“That I’m… a girl,”
“Ah,” he sat down at his desk with a smile. “I’ve had my suspicions for a while, but it was confirmed when you hugged me.”
A pink hue lit up your cheeks. You knew instantly what he meant; I felt your boobs against my chest when you hugged me. You quickly kneeled down, covering your face with your hands. You muttered out an apology, but it was too muffled for him to understand. You repeated yourself, but he still didn’t get it.
Fuji kneeled down in front of you and gently removed your hands. “One more time,” he prodded.
“I’m sorry,”
“For what?”
“All the trouble I’ve caused. Sorry for breaking down in front of you like that. I’m sorry for upsetting Kaidoh-kun, too…
Something flickered through his azure eyes. “I’m sure you didn’t upset Kaidoh, and you’ve caused me no trouble at all. We’re friends, after all, ne?”
“W-We are?”
“Yes,”
For the first time in years, you smiled – a real, genuine smile. You began to cry again, but you weren’t sad, you were happy.
Fuji never did pressure you about your bruises, but you had this feeling in the pit of your stomach that he had figured it out himself. You had sat down with his family for dinner, and they were all very kind to you. After dinner, Fuji had helped you with some of your homework, explaining things in a way that made you understand how to solve them on your own. When it was time to go to sleep, he kindly gave you his bed while he made a little blanket mattress on the floor. You had refused at first but quickly learned that the tensai is a stubborn one indeed. That night, you slept peacefully, without a single nightmare about your mother entering in the dead of night to harm or, even worse, kill you.
You couldn’t help but wonder if that was what home was supposed to feel like.
When morning came, you found yourself alone in Fuji’s room. The blankets had been picked up and neatly folded next to the closet. You were crawling out of bed when the door opened and the eldest Fuji sibling entered the room.
“I was just coming to wake you up.” She smiled. “Shuusuke had to get to morning practice, but he wanted me to tell you that you can take a shower and change into his clothes if you want.”
You expected her to ask again about dressing like a boy, but she didn’t.
“Once you’re done, come downstairs and get some breakfast, then I’ll drive you to school, okay?” She winked at you and left the room before you could protest.
You sat there for a moment, wondering if all this was just a dream before you finally did as you were told. You grabbed one of his uniforms from the closet and headed to the bathroom. A towel was sitting on the counter inside. You tried to avoid looking in the mirror as you stripped, but your gaze snapped to it before you could stop yourself. Your entire body was covered with bruises and scars, each at a different stage of healing. The most prominent ones were on your thighs where your mother had kicked you repeatedly for not washing the dishes properly. Leg wounds were easier to hide, your mother had said.
You tore your gaze away with a sigh and unwrapped the bandages that bound your boobs before stepping under the hot water. You truly didn’t want to get your hopes up, but more than anything, you wished this would last forever. Reality is cruel, though, and you can’t run away from your problems forever.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
You wrung your hands nervously in your lap, refusing to look up in case you met eyes with passing students. They were all gawking at the fancy red car that Yumiko drove. What would they say when they saw you stepping out of it? That was more attention than you wanted.
Yumiko patted your shoulder gently and offered you an encouraging smile. “Go on, you don’t want to be late.”
“Thank you, Fuji-san.”
“Oh please, Fuji-san is my mother. Just call me Yumiko, okay?” She grinned.
Despite yourself, you smiled back. “Thank you,”
“Have a good day!”
You waved at her as she drove away. As expected, the passing students stopped and stared at you, but for the first time, you honestly didn’t care. You were experiencing a lot of firsts lately.
The classroom was nearly empty when you entered – it was rare to be so early to class, but you were grateful that there were fewer eyes to stare at you as you took your seat. You glanced at the empty desk beside your own. How would things go once Kaidoh arrived? You wondered if he was still angry at you. You’d make sure to apologize to him after school.
One by one, students start piling in, not even noticing your presence. Kaidoh was one of the last and he stopped by your desk instead of sitting. He didn’t particularly look angry. Actually, you thought he looked rather nervous.
“Good morning, Kaidoh-kun.” You offered after a few minutes of silence.
“Good morning,” He echoed. “C-Can we talk? After school, I mean.”
With the intention of apologizing for your behavior, you agreed, noting how relieved he looked afterward. The rest of the day went by normally. Well, as normal as it could be at Seishun Gakuen.
At least you didn’t get kidnapped again. Though, as the day neared a close, you were increasingly becoming nervous. You knew what you wanted to talk to Kaidoh about, but what did he want to talk about?
The final bell rang and you started to gather your things, surprised to find Kaidoh ready to go. The two of you left the classroom without a word, walking silently beside one another until you had broken free from the sea of students trying to get home. He led you toward the tennis courts, but stopped a few feet short, turning to face you.
You stared each other down.
“I’m sorry!”
Your voices overlapped, bringing color to both of your faces.
“Y-You can go first,” He offered, feeling his heart race. He knew what he was going to say, but he hadn’t quite gotten the courage to say it yet.
“I’m sorry for the way I acted yesterday. You were just trying to help me but I ran away from you and avoiding you… that was rude of me. Please forgive me, Kaidoh-kun.” You bowed.
He hadn’t expected that. “I-I’m the one who’s sorry! You know, for trying to kidnap you… I umm… I was just…”
You tilted your head to the side and he mentally cursed. Why did you have to be so cute?
“I-I wanted you to know… I mean… You see… I…”
“Just tell him you like him already, mamushi!” Came Momo’s voice from a nearby bush.
Your face flushed. Had you heard him correctly?
“DAMN YOU MOMOSHIRO!” Kaidoh cried, hands balled into fists at his side. He was about to run after him when your soft voice made him freeze.
“Is it true?” You questioned, looking up at him through your lashes. “Do you… like me, Kaidoh-kun?”
His face turned a brighter red and he swallowed hard. Time to man up, Kaoru! “Yes, I like you very much! Please be my boyfriend!”
The regulars, no longer hiding in the bush, all cheered at his bravery.
You bit your lip, wondering if this would be easier without an audience. You figured it would be just as hard either way. “I like you, too, Kaidoh-kun.”
He felt so much relief, but quickly tensed when you continued.
“But… there’s something you should know first.” You glanced at Fuji, wondering if you should tell him. The tensai nodded with encouragement.
“W-What is it?” Kaidoh glanced at Fuji before looking back at you.
“I can’t be your boyfriend because… I’m a girl,”
Time seemed to freeze at that moment. Everyone stared at you with wide eyes, even Ryoma. The exceptions were, of course, Fuji, who already knew, and Tezuka. You assumed Fuji had told him, he had figured it out on his own, or he really was just emotionless.
You swallowed your nerves. “K-Kaidoh-kun?”
The sound of your voice was the kick that the clock needed to start time again.
“YOU’RE A GIRL?!” Momoshiro and Eiji cried out in unison.
“Mada mada dane,”
“Don’t act like you knew, Echizen/Ochibi!” They screamed in unison again.
You ignored their bickering, biting your lip as you looked at Kaidoh. He still hadn’t moved.
Suddenly he bowed low, his back forming a straight line. “Please be my girlfriend!”
The corners of your lips tugged up into a smile and tears filled your eyes. He still wanted you. You were so happy!
“Che, way to go, Mamushi. You made her cry. That’s not cool, not cool at all.”
“Mou~! Apologize right now, Kaidoh!”
“Mada mada dane, Kaidoh-senpai.”
“S-Shut up!” He yelled at them before turning back to you. He tried to apologize but the words stopped on his tongue when you threw your arms around his middle, burying your face in the crook of his neck. You could feel the heat radiating off his skin, and you were sure that yours matched. Almost unsurely, he wrapped his own arms around you, resting his head on top of your own.
Fuji smiled at the scene before him. You deserved happiness, and you certainly did not deserve the things that happened to you. He decided then and there that he would help you out and save you from your abusive life. A part of that responsibility was given to Kaidoh because he knew that no matter what, whether the second year knew your situation or not, he would always protect his girlfriend.

You sighed in content as you sunk lower into the cold water. It was after midnight and the stars were shining brightly overhead in the silky black sky, illuminating the pool you sat in. No one else around, all asleep in their hotel rooms. Naturally, you felt like this was an opportunity you just couldn’t pass up and had to take advantage of.
There was nothing better than taking a relaxing dip in the pool after midnight when no one was around to disturb you. Who wants to hear screaming kids and arguing adults when they’re trying to relax? Definitely not you.
“Senpai.” A voice drawled before the owner sunk into the pool next to you.
“Ah, Echizen!” You smiled, throwing your arm around his neck and pulling him closer. “Thanks for bringing me along!”
Yes, you had been invited to go to America with Ryoma for summer vacation. You had gone to stay for an entire month, using that time to relax before his tournament at the end of the month. You made sure to take full advantage of that time to relax and have some fun. Of course, it was a bit of a shock when Ryoma had approached you after school, asking if you wanted to fly across the world with him for a month. You were pretty amused at the reaction of Ryoma’s fan club, too. They had been pretty upset that Ryoma had asked you instead of one of them.
Ryoma’s cheeks tinted pink and he stuck out his bottom lip, trying to fix the hat that you had almost knocked off his head. “It wasn’t that big of a deal, senpai.” He muttered something else under his breath, looking away from you.
“Hmm?” You blinked down at him. “I didn’t catch that last part.”
“Nothing.” He responded quickly. Too quickly.
Your eyes narrowed and you pulled him closer, grabbing his chin and forcing him to look at you. His face flushed and his eyes widened a bit at how close his face was to yours. He could feel his heart beating rapidly in his ears and his eyes unconsciously glanced at your lips before moving back to meet your own.
“Are you hiding something from me, Echizen Ryoma?”
He flinched slightly at the use of his full name. A pout overtook his lips as he looked away from you. “I may have lied… when I said my old man was sick and couldn’t come…”
“Eh? Nanjirou-baka? Why would you do that?”
“I asked him to stay behind.” He stared at the clear blue water, afraid to meet your gaze.
“Oh? How come?” Your grip on him loosened, but he didn’t make a move to pull away.
“Because I… I wanted to be alone with you.” He muttered, pulling his hat down to cover his face. He could feel how hot his face had become and cursed himself. He must have looked soo uncool at that moment.
Your laugh cut him from his thoughts and he glared at you. “If that was the case, why didn’t you just tell me?”
“It’s embarrassing, senpai!” He groaned, turning away from you.
You chuckled again, using the arm around his neck to turn his face towards your own. “You really are adorable, Echizen. And Innocent, too.”
“S-Senpai…”
“You know, Echizen… when someone sees such an innocent person, they just have this urge to corrupt them.” You whispered as you pushed the hat off his head, leaning forward and claiming the young boy’s lips as your own. Ryoma visibly tensed, his eyes wide.
You pushed him until his back met the cold wall of the pool, sending a shiver down his spine. Your hand moved to rest against his neck, pressing your body closer to his own so that he was squished between you and the wall. He groaned in response, finally waking up and returning the kiss.
Your tongue ran across his bottom lip, forcing its way into his mouth. He let out a groan, hands moving to hold onto your sides. A few minutes passed before you pulled back, licking your lips in satisfaction at the flustered look on his face.
“We should go on vacation together more often, Ryoma~!” You smirked, pulling him into a hug.
He hesitantly returned it, his own arms snaking around your bare waist and his head resting on your chest. That usual cocky smirk made its way to his lips as he nodded. “Yes, we really should, senpai~”

“You’re going back to America?” You questioned, looking down at the shorter boy.
He nodded, pulling his cap down to shield his eyes. “I leave tomorrow morning.”
“Oh, I see.” You murmured, feeling your spirits drop.
“Y/N,”
“Yes?”
Ryoma leaned up and kissed your cheek, whispering in your ear before turning around and walking off. You stood there watching him until he disappeared from sight. Those three little words that he whispered were more than enough to keep you going until he returned from America, no matter how long that may be.
“Wait for me, Y/N.”

⁂ Darkness Turns to Light (Eiji Kikumaru)
Tumblr media
Genre: Fluff, Romance
Word Count: 1,627
Pairing: Reader x Kikumaru
World: Prince of Tennis
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
“Y/N!” A faint voice called out.
“Y/N!” The voice grew louder.
“Y/N!” It sounded so familiar.
“Ouch!” you whined after you were hit in the head with Inui’s black notebook. You rubbed your head and looked up to see your annoyed captain – who had taken Inui’s notebook – standing in front of you. “What’d I do?”
He sighed, resting his fingers to his forehead. “You were daydreaming.”
“Again,” Inui added, appearing next to the captain and taking his notebook back before disappearing.
Sure enough, you had started to daydream once school ended. You didn’t even remember entering the Seigaku tennis courts yet, there you were, racket in hand, leaning against the fence.
Tezuka sighed, “Start practicing.” And then he walked away.
“‘Kay~” you called out, heading off in search of an opponent.
By the time practice ended, you felt exhausted. You had gone around challenging one person right after the other. In the end, you had almost challenged every member of the Seigaku tennis club, seventh graders and regulars alike. Most of the matches you did win, though.
You fought Taka and won by one game. Fought Arai and won. Fought Eiji and tied. Fought Momo and won by two games. Fought Fuji and lost. You were about to ask Echizen for a match, but Tezuka declared that practice was over before you had the chance to reach him.
“Oi, Y/N!” Momo ran up to you, pulling you into a hug. “You know you’re the greatest, right?”
You scoffed, pushing the black-haired boy off of you. “Yes, I’ll treat you to lunch, Momo.”
He grinned, jumping into the air. “Let’s go, Echizen!”
The seventh-grade boy looked over at his senpai and sighed as Momo grabbed him and started to haul him off towards the burger joint. You grabbed your things and followed.
“Wait up!” Eiji ran after you and grinned as he fell into step beside you, walking by your side.
“That hurts, Momo-senpai!” Ryoma complained as Momo brought the boy into a tight headlock.
“You’re gonna kill him, Momo!” Eiji whined, rushing forward and pulling him away from Momo. In turn, he brought him into a bone-crushing hug, “Are you okay, Ochibi?”
“He won’t be when the two of you get through with him,” you muttered to yourself, chuckling as the two boys fought over the smaller boy. He looked over at you for help. With a grin, you snuck past the bickering boys and grabbed Echizen’s hand before taking off running.
“Hey! Get back here!” Eiji and Momo chorused, rushing after you.
You stuck your tongue out at them and picked up speed, dashing into the burger joint and finding a booth to sit in. Ryoma smiled up at you, “Thanks, senpai.”
“Sure, sure.” You waved him off as you sat down. He slid in next to you.
When the other two finally caught up, they came in huffing and puffing like they’d just ran two-hundred laps around the school. Momo went to order after taking money from you and Eiji, while Eiji slid in across from you.
“That was so unfair, Y/N!” Eiji pouted.
You smiled, “Sorry, Eiji. But the two of you were gonna kill poor Echizen.”
“Was not!” he argued, “I was trying to save him!”
“In saving him, you were smothering him.”
He stuck his tongue out at you and slid over as Momo came back with a tray filled with food. He left to get the drinks and came back, sitting next to Eiji who had already unwrapped his burger and began eating it. Momo ate five double cheeseburgers, Ryoma ate three double cheeseburgers and a large fry, Eiji ate two double cheeseburgers and a 12 piece chicken nugget, while you ate three double cheeseburgers.
Ryoma and Momo decided to have a contest to see who could finish their food first. You and Eiji watched on in horror and amusement as the two boys stuffed their faces. Their cheeks were puffed out, making them resemble chipmunks which made you both burst out laughing. The two boys froze and looked over at you, trying to utter out a, “What?” without much success.
Once the eating contest was over, Momo and Echizen took off towards their houses, moaning and groaning in pain as they went. You and Eiji lived near each other so you walked together, laughing about the two as you made your way back home.
“We did warn them that they were eating too much,” you commented.
Eiji nodded, “And too fast. They never listen, though.”
You chuckled, “They never learn, either.”
“Hey, do you wanna come over tomorrow?” Eiji grinned, “My family is going on this family shopping trip out of town. Since I have practice tomorrow, I told them I couldn’t make it but they’re gonna be gone for a couple hours! I’m gonna be bored!”
You laughed and nodded, “Sure, Eiji!”
His grin grew and his eyes sparkled as he hugged you tightly, “Thank you!”
“Don’t get so excited, Eiji.” you poked him and he smiled.
“I’ll make us some lunch, too! I’ve been meaning to try out this new recipe I learned.”
Eiji was pretty capable of cooking a decent meal without burning the house down, which most of the kids your age seemed to have trouble with. You’ve known him for a while now, but never actually tasted Eiji’s cooking before so you felt pretty excited at the thought of getting to try it.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, then, Eiji!” you called back as you entered the house.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
The next day seemed to melt away and you soon found yourself at the tennis courts once again. ‘I’ve got to stop daydreaming so much,’ you thought as you tried to remember just how your day had gone. It seemed to slip you, however.
“Y/N!” Eiji grinned as he glomped you from behind.
You laughed, patting his arm. “Hi, Eiji!”
“Are you ready?” he asked, excitedly. “Huh, huh? Are ya, are ya?”
“Calm down, Eiji.” you chuckled, grabbing onto his shoulders to make him stay still, “How much sugar have you had today, exactly?”
He stopped bouncing and put his index finger to his chin in thought, “I dunno. I had a can of soda at lunch. I ate some powered sugar on my omelet this morning. Oooh! And Momo gave me some candy when I got to school!”
You sweatdropped, “Should have known.”
“Hurry up! Hurry up!” he whined, pulling you towards the exit.
You chuckled as you grabbed your things, following the hyper active ninth grader out of the courts and towards his home.
“I went with my sister last night to get the things I needed.” he told you as he entered the empty house. “Make yourself at home, ‘k?”
You nodded, plopping down on the couch in the living room. Eiji’s house was quite beautiful and had a nice homey feel to it, very warm and inviting. You could hear Eiji messing around in the kitchen as you looked around the room. One thing that caught your attention was a photo album that was set off to the side. Curiousity got the best of you and you stood up to grab it, sitting back down and flipping it open. At the front of the book were a bunch of pictures from when Eiji was younger. He looked so adorable! You smiled warmly as you flipped the page. Eiji was cute as a baby and a young child, but he’s even more adorable now.
“Y/N~!” Eiji called from the kitchen, making you jump in surprise, nearly dropping the album. “Come here a sec!”
You set the book back down in its original position and walked into the kitchen. Eiji was going back and fourth between several different bowls.
“Can you give me a hand, please?” he pouted, “I took on too much at once.”
You giggled, “Sure thing. Just tell me what you want me to do.”
He grinned and hugged you, “‘Kay!”
“What are you making, anyway?” you wondered.
“Spicy tuna rolls!” he grinned, “I need you to make the cake, okay?”
“Sure,” you smiled, getting out the ingredients as he called them out.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
Thirty minutes later, you had both the spicy tuna rolls and the cake done, and decorated. You hummed, picking up one of the tuna rolls and popping it into your mouth. “This tastes amazing!”
Eiji smiled proudly, “I’m glad you like it! It’s actually the first time I’ve made them.”
“You’re a natural, Eiji.” you told him.
He chewed on his bottom lip shyly, moving closer to you. “You said for me to tell you what to do, right?”
You nodded, slightly confused as to where he was going with this. “Well, yeah. I said I would help you but I wanted to do it your way.”
Eiji was silent for a moment, having an internal debate with himself before finally speaking. “Kiss me. I’m telling you to kiss me.”
The request surprised you, making you blink dumbly.
Seeing your hesitation, he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Just kidding~”
You smiled, leaning forward and pressing your lips to his. His hand found its way to your neck, pulling you closer in order to deepen the kiss, but he pressed himself forward too far, causing you to lose your balance, falling backward onto the floor with him on top. He pulled back from the kiss, grinning as he sat on your stomach with his hands on either side of your head.
“I have one more order for you.” He stated, staring down into your eyes.
“And what would that be?” you hummed, pushing away a strand of red hair from his face.
“Be my partner,”
“Gladly,” you smiled, pulling him down into another gentle kiss.

⁂ Falling Harder (Shinji Ibu)
Tumblr media
Genre: Friendship, Slice of Life, Fluff, Comedy ☁
Word Count: 3,520 ☁
Pairing: Reader x Shinji ☁
World: Prince of Tennis ☁
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
“Hurry up you two!” Momoshiro called from up ahead. He was making you come along to the street tennis courts with him, even though you and Ryoma didn’t want to go.
“Shut up, Momo!” You both chorused back.
He rolled his eyes and ran up the stairs with the two of you a few minutes behind.
When you finally climbed the stairs, you found Hajime Mizuki, Shinji Ibu, Akira Kamio, and Yuuta Fuji there. They were having a doubles match; Mizuki and Yuuta vs. Shinji and Kamio. You and Momo sat on the bench and watched the match while Ryoma leaned against a tree.
The match ended with Shinji and Kamio as the winners, and the four of them walked over. Kamio glared at Momo, “What are you doing here?”
“An invited us,” he glared back.
“She invited you, not us.” You pointed to yourself and then to Ryoma.
Ryoma nodded, “You made us come.”
“I don’t mind you two,” Kamio muttered.
“What?!” Momo yelled, jumping up and pointing an accusing finger at him, “What makes them so special!?”
The two of them started to argue back and forth, first about An and spiraling into random events that happened before they even met.
Mizuki grabbed your arm, sitting down on your right, “Do they always do this?”
“Yup,” you quipped, watching the two yelling at each other.
“They’re being too loud,” Shinji muttered quietly, nearly making you jump; you hadn’t even noticed him sitting there.
You glanced at him, “That’s nothing new either. Those two only have two settings – loud and louder.”
“Like you’re better than I am!?” Momo screamed, getting into Kamio’s face.
“You’re damn right I am!” Akira screamed back.
The sound of giggling broke your attention away from their bickering and you turned around to see a girl about the same size as Ryoma. She had deep green hair and blue eyes. She was giggling and staring at Shinji who tensed as soon as he saw her.
“Hii~ Shinji!” she giggled again, holding her folded hands to her chest.
“Hello,” he answered, his voice emotionless as he turned back around, giving the two quarreling boys his full attention.
The girl smiled and ran over, sitting next to him, much closer than she should have. In response, Shinji moved closer to you, trying to escape the girl as she scooted closer and closer until she was practically in his lap.
He closed his eyes as she grabbed his arm, hugging it tightly to her chest.
“I didn’t know you swung that way.” Mizuki chuckled.
Shinji didn’t even acknowledge him, so you hit Mizuki in the back of the head in his place.
“What was that for?!” he cried in surprise, glaring at you. “Why do you have to be so mean?”
“Don’t be a jerk, Hajime.” you hissed.
He scowled at the use of his first name and Yuuta chuckled from beside him.
“What are you up to this weekend, Shinji baby?” the small girl giggled.
He shook slightly, his eyes staying closed. A couple minutes later, he lifted his free arm and put it around your shoulder, pulling you closer to his side. “I’ll be spending it with my partner.”
You raised an eyebrow in question but said nothing. Mizuki jumped up and sent you an accusing glare, “When the hell did that happen?”
Both Akira and Momo stopped yelling at each other, having been drowned out by Mizuki’s outcry. Putting on a fake smile, you stomped on his foot before sending him a warning look, telling him to shut his trap. He scowled again, plopping back down onto the bench and rubbing his sore foot.
“You never said anything about dating Y/N.” Akira murmured to Shinji, sending him a suspicious look.
“Neither have you,” Momo stared at you with the same look.
The small girl removed herself from beside him to stand in front of the group, her eyes watering, “I t-thought we had s-something s-s-special!” And with that dramatic act, she ran away.
Shinji made no movement as his eyes slowly slid open. Everyone stood around the two of you, waiting for some sort of answer. Silence settled over the group before he finally spoke up, removing his arm and putting some distance between the two of you.
“She has been stalking me for two months,” he muttered, so soft that the other boys had to lean closer to hear him properly. “She does this every time I try to tell her there is nothing between us. She always comes back.”
“I get it,” Yuuta snapped his fingers. “You told her that Y/N was your partner in hopes that she’d leave you alone.”
Shinji slowly nodded, “Sorry.”
“It’s fine, I understand.” you offered him a smile.
“I won’t allow it!” Mizuki jumped up, stomping his foot on the ground much like a child would. “I won’t allow my little sibling to be used like this.”
You rolled your eyes and stood, kicking Mizuki hard in the face with the bottom of your sneaker. “Will you shut up, I’m not even related to you.”
He twitched slightly before stepping backward, holding his nose. “How can you be okay with this? He’s using you!”
“It’s not even a big deal,” you responded, smacking his hands away when he tried to grab you. “It’s not like it’s real or anything.”
He blinked a few times before sighing, “Fine. But I’m not happy about this!”
You rolled your eyes as he stomped his foot again and then you sat back down next to Shinji who hadn’t moved an inch. You took his hand and held it in both of your own, “Don’t worry, Shinji. I’ll play along.”
He blinked slowly, his navy eyes set on your hands. “Thank you.”
You nodded, “Happy to be able to help!”
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
It’s been about a month and a half since you became Shinji’s partner. Honestly, it wasn’t as much work as you thought it would have been. You hung out with each other like you normally did, with the exception of holding hands and hugging, and you were spending a lot more time with Fudomine, as well. Mizuki and Momo liked to tag along, both for different reasons; Momo had nothing better to do and Mizuki was being an idiot. Even Ryoma came quite a few times, as well. Against his will, of course, but that’s just minor details.
The little girl, who you soon found out went by the name Gracie, had started to come around less and less, instead choosing to hide in the shadows, going after Shinji when you weren’t around. Apparently, she hated and felt threatened by you all at the same time.
You were sitting inside the burger joint with Shinji at your side, hand clasped within your own. Ryoma sat to your right, stuffing his face while simultaneously glaring at Momo who was glaring back and also stuffing his face. Eiji was trying to contain his laughter as he watched the two of them. Eiji, Shinji, and yourself had already finished eating and were just waiting on the two boys to finish their eating contest. Honestly, though, it didn’t look like there was an end in sight anytime soon.
Your phone started to vibrate in your pocket so you stood up and stretched before bringing it to your ear, “Yeah?”
“Hey, Y/N-chan.” It was Taka.
You smiled at the group before excusing yourself to walk outside where you leaned against the brick wall of the building, “What’s up, Taka?”
“Oishi asked me to call you,” he answered softly.
“What’s he got planned now?”
“Bowling,”
“Please tell me Inui isn’t going!”
“He is,”
You sighed deeply, knowing what was in store. “Can I at least bring some friends with me?”
“Of course you can. Will you let Momoshiro, Eiji and Echizen know, please?”
You could hear the smile in his voice before the line went dead. Taking a deep breath, you walked back inside and stopped beside the table, giving Eiji a look.
He cocked his head to the side, curious. “Who was that?”
“Taka,”
“What’d he want?”
“Oishi asked him to call me.” You sighed deeply. “He asked me to inform your guys… we’re going bowling again.”
“No!” Eiji cried, letting his head fall onto the table. “I don’t wanna!”
You patted him on the back, “The good news is that Inui’s going to have more victims. I’m inviting Mizuki, Shinya, and Yuuta.”
“Well, at least we won’t be suffering alone… right?” He pouted at you, trying to look less traumatized.
“Hey, Shinji. Invite Kamio, too.” Momo muttered through a mouthful of food.
“Shinji isn’t going,” you declared, folding your arms over your chest.
The bluenette looked at you with a mostly blank face, his navy eyes lit up with curiosity. He didn’t voice this, though.
“Eh? But you have to bring him along!” Eiji protested.
Ryoma swallowed his food, took a sip of his drink, and stared up at you. “If you leave him alone too long, senpai, that girl will probably take advantage.”
Your eye twitched, ‘Damn that brat, he has a good point!’ With a frustrated sigh, you said, “Fine, but bring Tetsu with you!”
Shinji slowly nodded.
“Maybe this won’t be so bad, after all!” Eiji chirped, offering the group a grin.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
“Will you hurry up?” Mizuki sighed as the group walked down the street.
You muttered incoherently under your breath, walking very slowly behind the two boys.
“Hey, guys!” Yuuta waved before crossing the street. “What’s wrong with Y/N?”
Shinya chuckled, covering his mouth. “Y/N’s not much of a morning person,”
You scoffed, leaning on Shinya when he put your arm around his shoulder to help support your slouching frame. “We weren’t even supposed to leave yet. This fool woke me up too early!”
“There’s no harm in being there early.” Mizuki glared at you over his shoulder before huffing.
“No harm my left buttcheek,” you muttered darkly, glaring daggers at the male’s back.
“Why your left cheek?” Shinya wondered, making you shrug.
“You’re so weird,” Yuuta shook his head.
When your group finally arrived at the bowling alley, it was about 8:45 in the morning. Oishi, Eiji, Kaidoh, Inui, Tetsu, Shinji, coach Ryuzaki, and Kamio had already arrived. You pulled away from Shinya and sat down against the side of the building.
Once everyone had arrived – a large group of students from several different schools -, the group filed inside and got ready to bowl. You weren’t sure how, but coach Ryuzaki was able to book the entire building for the event, meaning there were no other people to interrupt.
“Alright everyone, listen up.” Coach Ryuzaki called out and the room slowly quieted down.
Oishi stood beside her with Inui on his other side. “Here’s the deal. You’ll be put into teams of two. If you drop out, refuse to play or get a gutterball, you’ll be drinking a shot of Inui’s Aozu drink.”
Inui grinned evily, holding up a small shot glass full of thick blue-green liquid. The Seigaku team shifted uncomfortably.
“If you lose, you drink an entire pitcher.” Inui held up the pitcher and Seigaku took a step back, leaving the others looking around confused. “If you win, you will not be required to drink Aozu.”
You moved to stand next to Fuji, giving him a weary look. “Hey, Shusuke?”
He nodded knowingly. “Yes, I know.”
“Alright, I’ll announce the teams.” Coach Ryuzaki stepped forward with a sheet of paper in her hand. “Inui-Kaidoh. Kawamura-Horio. Eiji-Fuji. Kachiro-Mizuno. Echizen-Momo. Mizuki-Mori. Jen-Choutarou. Shinji-Kamio. Shinya-Yuuta. Myself-Oishi. Everyone clear?”
Everyone nodded and found their respective partners.
“Quite the turn out, hmm?” Fuji murmered from beside you.
“They have no clue what they’re in for,” you muttered apologetically.
Eiji nodded in agreement, clutching your arm tightly. “Do you think Ryuzaki-sensei and Oishi will cheat again?”
“Probably,” you and Fuji chorused.
“Inui-Kaidoh pair. You’re up first.” Ryuzaki grinned.
Both boys glanced at each other before moving forward. Inui managed to knock down one pin in the corner, while Kaidoh knocked down five.
Taka and Horio went next. Taka was about to throw the ball when Horio stopped him. “Here, Kawamura-senpai!” he handed Taka his racket, making him go into burning mode and get a strike.
“That’s cheating!” you and Eiji chorused, angrily.
“Not-uh!” Horio stuck his tongue out at you.
Eiji and Fuji were next. Fuji grabbed the ball in his hands and threw it. The ball ended up going into the gutter. “Still haven’t gotten much better.” he murmured, thoughtfully.
Inui grinned evily again, appearing behing Fuji who sweatdropped. Everyone else froze, watching on in horror as he drank the blue-green liquid. He only took a couple sips before his body hit the ground.
“Fuji!” Taka ran to his side and shook him, to no avail.
Eiji ran over, as well, whining about that drink being murderous.
“Honestly, if Fuji can’t even stomach it, the rest of us are really in for it.” you announced, sitting next to Choutarou. He looked frightened. Then again, so did the others.
Eiji swallowed hard as he threw the ball. He hit a strike and jumped for joy, happy not to have to drink the demonic liquid.
Kachiro and Mizuno were next. Kachiro managed to get a strike on the first try.
Ryoma and Momo were after them. Momo managed to knock down all but two pins. Ryoma tried to get them both, but still only managed to get one.
Mizuki and Mori were up next. Of course, Mizuki had to be a show off and get a strike. He turned toward the group with a chuckle, twirling his hair around his finger. “Of course I got a strike, it’s all about the numbers.”
“Showoff,” you muttered as the two boys walked by. Mizuki stuck his tongue out at you and Mori only grinned.
Then it was time for you and Choutarou.
“I’m counting on you, Chou-chan.” you told him, resting you hand on his shoulder. “No pressure, though!”
He nodded, glancing down at you. “Don’t worry. I’ve got it.”
You grinned, taking a step back to give him room. He grabbed one of the balls and took a deep breath, throwing it down the lane. You instinctively grabbed onto the back of his shirt, praying to every god and deity you could think of. Your prayers were answered – he made it! A strike, he got a strike!
Letting out a relieved breath, he turned around just in time to catch you as you launched a hug at him.
“Way to go Choutarou!”
Shinji and Akira were up after you. Shinji was staring at the ball and muttering, so Akira tried to grab it. The two fought for the ball until Akira accidentally dropped it. He gulped, staring at the ball as it landed in the gutter.
Inui appeared behind him, grinning like a psychopath as he held the shot glass out to Kamio. He took it from his hand, gulping again before guzzling it down. Two seconds later, he collapsed.
Two drop out; Shusuke Fuji and Akira Kamio.
Shinya and Yuuta were the next ones to take their turn.
“Let me,” Shinya said, grabbing the bowling ball from Yuuta. He managed to hit a strike, making Yuuta let out a sigh of relief.
Last to go was Oishi and Ryuzaki-sensei. They both grinned and went over to their bags, getting out their bowling gloves.
Eiji gulped from your left, “We are so~ doomed.”
“Yup,” you nodded, watching as Oishi grabbed his ball and stepped forward. Of course he got a strike.
━━━━━━༻🌧️༺━━━━━━
The battle continued on for a while and you had to admit, it was pretty fierce. Just like the last time, Oishi and Ryuzaki were cheating, catching people off guard just as they were throwing their balls. It wasn’t going well for the others.
After twenty minutes, almost everyone had dropped.
Ten Drop Out; Shusuke Fuji. Akira Kamio. Kaoru Kaidoh. Tatsunori Mori. Eiji Kikumaru. Yuuta Fuji. Inui Sadaharu. Takashi Kawamura. Shinya Yanagizawa. Satoshi Horio.
“Hey, Y/N?” Choutarou whispered, grabbing tightly onto your arm.
“Hmm?”
“We’re not that far behind. If Momo and Ryoma can ace this shot, their score will be above ours, but we can easily get our place back. It’s those seventh graders we have to look out for.”
“I know. Do you think you can take it?” you glanced at him curiously.
He nodded, giving you a determined look. “Definately.”
“I’ll take care of Momo and Ryoma, then.”
He nodded again, pulling away from you and grabbing one of the balls. He got another strike. Who would have thought that he was so good at bowling? You almost couldn’t believe that he’s never played before, but you were thankful that he was on your side.
You glared at coach Ryuzaki as she tricked Mizuki into getting a gutter ball. If she can play dirty, then so can you! Just as Momo went to throw the ball, you grinned and yelled out, “Momo, watch out for that puddle!”
“Huh?” He tripped over his own feet, the ball flying from his hands and into the gutter. It took him a moment to realize what had happened and then he turned around, glaring at you. “Cheater!”
“Like I’m the only one doing it?” you retorted, sitting back down next to Choutarou.
Momoshiro gulped as Ryuzaki held the shot glass in his face. He frowned, downing it and passing out before he got halfway through the drink.
Twelve Drop Out; Shusuke Fuji. Akira Kamio. Kaoru Kaidoh. Tatsunori Mori. Eiji Kikumaru. Yuuta Fuji. Inui Sadaharu. Takashi Kawamura. Shinya Yanagizawa. Satoshi Horio. Hajime Mizuki. Takeshi Momoshiro.
Choutarou picked up the ball and approached the line. He faked a throw, the corner of his mouth twitching up when Ryuzaki screamed, trying to distract him – he had anticipated it. You sent her a glare and she shrugged.
“I saw a roach,”
You glanced around the room, from the pile of bodies near the door to the eight people left standing. Kachiro squeaked when his foot slipped and he fell onto his behind, the ball landing in the next lane over. Your eyes narrowed at the small puddle of water near the line before snapping to Ryuzaki who was whistling innocently.
‘Isn’t she supposed to be teaching us sportsmanship? Jeez,’
Inui’s shadow covered the small boy like a menacing creature from the darkest depths of hell. Before the drink could even be offered, the boy flopped backward, unconscious. Mizuno, his partner, gulped in fear.
Shinji stood up and made a move toward the ball rack, but you stopped him, resting your hand over his. His eyes met yours and the concern touched his heart, bringing pink to his cheeks.
“Take your time and don’t let coach Ryuzaki distract you,” you told him softly, keeping your voice low.
He nodded, seeming to hesitate for a moment before leaning down and pecking your cheek. He mumbled something, but it was too low for you to hear it and he didn’t give you time to question it before he was approaching the line.
His form looked good and you were sure that the ball was at least going to hit, but it only just clipped the side pin before hitting the gutter. The pin in question wobbled a bit and you held your breath. The pin stilled.
Inui pounced, grabbing Shinji’s shoulder and nearly smacking the bluenette in the face with the cup. “Drink up, and enjoy~”
“No, wait!” You rushed forward, snatching the cup from his hand. The liquid felt slimey on your hand when it slipping over the rim. “I’ll drink it instead,”
“Senpai, no!” Choutarou grabbed your free hand, his brown eyes filled with worry.
“I have to do this,” you shook your head, pulling away from him. “Shinji… I really like you!” Before anyone could stop you, you tilted your head back and downed the contents of the cup. Those that were still conscious cried out in surprise and terror.
And then everything went quiet.
You blinked a few times, staring at the small drops in the bottom of the cup. Your head felt foggy.
“Senpai?” Choutarou whispered, scared that if he raised his voice, you might break.
Shinji approached, carefully taking the cup from your hand. “Are you okay?”
You wrinkled your nose and smacked your lips a few times. “Taste like lemon,”
Everyone fell to the floor dramatically aside from Ryuzaki, who just stared at you as if you had grown an extra head.
“What? Why are you lookin’ at me like that?”
“Oh look at the time, I have to go pick up Sakuno. Bye!” Ryuzaki turned tail and all but ran from the building.
“Isn’t Sakuno at home?” you wondered, bringing your attention back to Shinji when he took your hand. “Shinji, what -”
His lips met yours, silencing you. “I really like you, too.”
Oishi sighed deeply from his place on the ground, running his hand across his face. “What a strange world we live in,”
You grinned at the comment, wrapping your arms around Shinji’s waist.

“No way!”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Yes!!”
“No!!”
Momoshiro whined, glaring at you as you leaned against the wall of a nearby building.
“Just let it go, Momo-senpai.” Ryoma sighed, standing off to the side and watching the two of you with little interest.
“C’mon! Ple~ase!” Momo clapped his hands together, sticking his trembling bottom lip out.
“No, Momo!” you growled, glaring harder at the black-haired boy who scowled in response.
Momoshiro claims to be starving and happens to be broke. Ryoma is also hungry, and also has no money. You, on the other hand, had just gotten paid. Can you piece it together?
“I’ll be your best friend!”
“That gives me even more reason to keep saying no.” You scoffed, pushing off the wall and taking off down the street. Momo followed like a lost puppy, all the way to your house. You kicked your shoes off and went into the living room, plopping down on the couch. Momo sat on the floor next to you, looking up at you with an expectant face, while pulling off the puppy pout at the same time. Ryoma had taken the seat next to you, his eyes on the television as it played the popular cartoon, Pongebob Circlepants.
“Y/N~!” Momo whined again, resting his head on your leg which had been propped up on the coffee table, “Be a nice host and make me some food!”
“Momoshiro,” A vein appeared next to your eye as you clenched your fist around a pillow and threw it at his face, sending him to the floor with a yelp and a thud.
Ryoma sniggered, glancing at Momo before looking back at the TV.
“Oi! What’s going on down here?!” Your older brother, Harukaze, appeared with his best friend, Hikaru, at his side.
You kept your gaze on the wooden floor, refusing to look at Hikaru. You’ve had a huge crush on your brother’s best friend for two years now and you found it hard to even look at him. If your brother knew, though, he would kill you. Besides, you were convinced that Davide had no interest in you and he probably had a girlfriend already.
Momo whined, removing the pillow from his red face, “Your sibling is mean!”
Your eye twitched as you stood up, voice strained in an attempt to keep calm. “I’m the mean one? You’re the idiot who won’t shut up about food for more than three freaking seconds!”
“It’s only polite to offer food to guests!” he retorted, getting up off the floor and getting into your face.
“Polite, my ass!” You grabbed the collar of his shirt in your fist and he did the same as a strand of electricity connected your blazing eyes to one another.
“Oi! Oi!” The two of you were pulled away from each other, but that didn’t stop the staring contest you held. Five minutes later, Momo scoffed and looked away, glaring at the window.
You smirked in victory but quickly frowned when you realized something important; Bane was holding onto Momo, which meant only one thing - Davide was the one with his arm around your waist, holding you to his chest as his hand rested on your shoulder.
You gulped, tilting your head down so that your hair covered your eyes. “Um… I have to err… go… read something…” You shoved him away from you and ran out of the room, up the stairs, and into your bedroom. Sliding down the door, you put your hand over your face, feeling the burn against your skin. ‘Go read something? Honestly? That’s the best I could come up with?! Why, oh why, did he have to be the one guy I always make a fool out of myself in front of?’

“What… was that about?” Bane asked, looking at the doorway with a confused expression on his face.
“I dunno,” Momo muttered.
Ryoma pulled his hat down over his eyes. Was he the only one that noticed you responded like that because of Davide? No, Davide realized it too. You always acted that way every time he got close to you. He’s seen other guys hold you like that, hug you, and you always acted perfectly fine. Why only him? The question killed him because he couldn’t seem to find an answer.
“Someone wanna go check on Y/N?” asked Bane, who looked between the three other males in the room.
Before Davide could volunteer, Ryoma had already stood up and left the room.
Without knocking, he opened the door and walked in, closing it behind him. You were sitting at your desk, resting your head on the cold wooden surface with your arms resting around.
“Y/N-senpai,” Ryoma called, resting his hand on your shoulder.
You lifted your head to look at your kouhai, “Yes, Echizen?”
“You like him, don’t you, senpai?” The freshman sat on the side of your bed, sitting with his legs folded and chin resting in the palm of his hand.
“As always, you catch on too quick.” you sighed, leaning back in the chair. “I know nothing’ll probably ever happen between us and I don’t want to risk ruining the small friendship we have, ya know?” You got up and fell onto the bed next to him and he turned so that he was facing you.
“I don’t know about love, Y/N-senpai, but I’ll listen if you need it.”
You grinned, pulling the small boy into a tight hug. “I really appreciate that, Ryoma.”
There was a light knock on the door before it opened to reveal the three boys. You pulled away as they walked in. Momo raised his eyebrow and grinned, “You just wanted a chance to get close to Y/N, you little creep!” Ryoma’s cheeks went slightly pink as he pulled his hat down, making Momo laugh. “Echizen’s got a crush on Y/N!!”
“I do not, Momo-senpai!” Ryoma protested with a scowl.
“Hmm, but Y/N was hugging you.” Momo took a seat next to you, putting his arm over your shoulder, “Maybe you like Echizen, too?”
“Oh yes,” you said mockingly, putting your arm around Ryoma’s neck and pulling him closer. “I just love you so~ much, Echizen Ryoma.”
He flushed, trying to break free from your grip. “Senpai!”
You laughed, letting him go. Momo sniggered and Ryoma glared.
“You’re not… seriously in love are you?” Bane asked, looking between you and Ryoma. He didn’t seem too happy about the news. Davide was glaring at the small boy but you knew it was only because you were Bane’s sister. He’s always been protective over you.
‘But not because we’re close friends. Not because he cares about me. Because Bane is his best friend and it’s sort of like a job to help look out for me,’ you thought with a frown. You were about to tell him that it was just a joke when Ryoma spoke up.
“Y/N is dating Fuji-senpai,” he said, simply.
Momo’s mouth hung open as he stared at you.
Your mouth hung open as you stared at Ryoma with an incredulous look. Bane was opening and closing his mouth like a fish. And Davide was glaring even harder at Ryoma.
“I forbid this!” Bane managed out, crossing his arms and glaring at you. “Break up with him right now!”
Now that annoyed you. “Forbid it? You forbid it?”
“That’s right. Go on, call him and break it off!”
“No! You have no right to tell me what to do, Harukaze! Get out of my room!” you pushed him and Davide out and slammed the door in their shocked faces.
Momo raised his eyebrow in question, looking between you and Ryoma, “I didn’t know you were dating Fuji-senpai.”
“They’re not,” Ryoma said quietly, in case they were listening at the door.
“Not?” Momo muttered, confused. “But you just said -”
“It’s a plan to make the guy Y/N likes jealous,” he responded simply.
“Shusuke is going to kill us.” you groaned, “Besides, there’s no way he’s going to get jealous.”
“Davide seemed to be glaring pretty hard at Echizen. Wonder why…?” Momo mused, staring at the door as he stroked his chin.
You scoffed, “Only because of my brother.”
“Eh?”
“He feels it’s his job to protect me because I’m his best friend’s sister.”
“Ahhhh, that makes sense.” Momo nodded in understanding.
“Let’s go,” Ryoma stood up, “We better go talk to Fuji-senpai.”
You and Momo followed Ryoma out of the house, ignoring Bane’s requests to stop, and headed over to Shusuke’s house so you could then explain the situation and try and get him to play along. It honestly seemed like a waste of time, in your opinion, but a small part of you buried deep inside had hope.
Yumiko opened the door and smiled when she saw it was you, “Shusuke is up in his room.”
You all thanked her before running up the stairs and into Shusuke’s room. He and Yuuta were sitting on the floor with a photo album between them. Fuji smiled as he looked up at you. Ryoma and Momo took seats on the bed, while you sat next to Yuuta.
Upon noticing the looks on your faces, his smile dropped slightly. “What’s up?”
“I need a favor,” you told him, refusing to meet his calculating blue eyes.
“Hmm?” he tilted his head to the side. “What is it?”
“You want to take that one, Echizen?” you shot him a look.
“You have to be Y/N-senpai’s boyfriend,” Ryoma said in a bored tone.
“Oh?” Shusuke raised his eyebrow in question and Yuuta did the same, glancing at you.
“Y/N is crushing on someone and Echizen formed a plan.” Momo grinned.
“Without my consent, mind you.” You commented.
“You didn’t deny it, though.” Momo teased.
Your cheeks burned. “I didn’t have time…”
“Ahh,” Shusuke pieced it together and smiled, “You want me to pretend to be your boyfriend so that he gets jealous, ne?”
“Pretty much,” you muttered, looking down at the random pictures Shusuke had taken; flowers, birds, trees, couples, the park, the lake, and a bunch of other random things. He really did love his photography.
“That’s no problem,” he smiled warmly.
“You… don’t mind?” you questioned, suspicion building within you.
“Of course not. You’re a good friend of mine and this will help you out.”
You smiled, throwing your arms around his neck. “Thank you Shusuke!”
He chuckled, patting your back, “Sure. May I ask who you like?”
“No!” you glared at Momo, “This idiot can’t keep his mouth shut. If I tell you, everyone’ll know!”
“Oi! I resent that!” Momo scoffed.
“Come on, Momo-senpai,” sighed Ryoma as he grabbed Momo’s wrist and pulled him out of the room.
Shusuke and Yuuta looked at you expectantly and you sighed. “My brother’s best friend, Hikaru.”
“Davide?” Shusuke asked, surprised, “I didn’t think he was your kind of guy.”
You shrugged, picking at the carpet. “I really like him but this plan is not going to work. I tried to tell Echizen that but the little brat doesn’t listen.”
Shusuke chuckled, “You’d be surprised.”
“Eh?”
“You never know if it’s going to work until you give it a try. I’ll make sure to come and get you in the morning, alright?”
“Sure.” ‘Maybe he’s right. I mean, he is the tensai of Seigaku. I should trust him and believe he’s right…. no matter how hard that might be,’

“Wake up,” someone shook your body but you groaned and ignored it. “Oi! You’re gonna be late!”
You groaned, rolling over onto your back and slowly opening your eyes, blinking until they adjusted to the bright light shining in through the window. You could still feel the person’s hand on your shoulder and, when you glanced over, you froze. Davide was standing over you, dressed and ready for school.
“W-What are you doing in here!?” you screamed, pushing his hand away and sitting up.
He shrugged, “Your brother asked me to get you up.”
“Harukaze,” you growled, springing out of bed and running downstairs. Your brother sat at the table and he didn’t have time to react before you kicked him in the face, sending him flying back into the wall. “What the hell were you thinking, idiot!? Telling Davide to wake me up!”
“I didn’t think it’d matter!” he retorted, rubbing his sore nose. “He’s woken you up before!”
“Wouldn’t matter… If you don’t feel like waking me up, then don’t! But don’t send him -” you pointed at Davide who had just entered the kitchen, “- to wake me up for you!” You hit your brother in the head before running out of the kitchen and back up to your room. The last thing you wanted was to be woken up by Hikaru!
You sat down on the bedroom floor, holding a hand over your rapidly beating heart. You wish you could escape that boy, but it seems like every time you turn around, he’s right there! ‘Oh, cupid, why have you cursed me like this? Or perhaps it was your doing, Karma! Either way, you both suck!’ You felt a presence behind you and turned around to see Davide standing there, rubbing his neck nervously. ‘See, I told you. Every time I turn around!’
“Sorry,” he said, softly. “If I woulda known you’d be so upset, I wouldn’t have done it. Sorry, Y/N-chan.”
You felt a pang in your heart when you saw his crestfallen face. He looked so sad as he turned around and left the room. You groaned, falling back onto the floor with a thud. ‘Why am I such an idiot? I still blame you Karma! Cupid!’
You weren’t sure how long you had laid there, but it felt like a couple hours at least. You didn’t move, too caught up in your mind replaying the image of his sad face.
“Y/N?” Shusuke’s face appeared above you. “We’re going to be late.” he murmured, grabbing your hand and pulling you off the floor, “Details when we leave. Now, get dressed.”
He left the room and you quickly changed into the Seigaku uniform before rushing down the stairs with your bag slung over your shoulder. Shusuke was standing in the living room, smiling brightly. Davide and Bane were sitting on the couch, glaring daggers at the brown-haired tensai.
“Ah, ready, love?” Shusuke questioned, his hand taking hold of your own.
You nodded, lacing your fingers with his. “Let’s go,”
Without a word to your brother and his friend, you stepped out of the house with Shusuke at your side. A comfortable silence rested over you for several minutes before you decided to break it.
“Hey, Shusuke?”
“Hm?”
“I think Karma and Cupid have teamed up against me.”
He laughed as the two of you stepped through the gates of Seishun Gakuen, the one place you knew you’d never run into Davide.
