A Scary Phantom of Vulnerability [NCIS Sydney fanfic, DeShawn & Evie, ~2k words]

Sometimes one insignificant exchange between characters sparks a headcanon. And sometimes it takes a whole season and then some, for that headcanon to sprout into fanfic.

The exchange? This one from 1x02 “Snakes in the Grass”:

Evie is determined to fix things between her and DeShawn. The whole team really, but when she comes into their headquarters the next day, Mackey welcomes her with her usual nod and a lopsided smile, Rosie hands her coffee and JD cracks a joke she doesn’t know if she should laugh or cry about. Classic JD. Blue is a smidge shier than usual, but she tries to smile all the same, and Evie knows that as the day goes by and if she acts normal, they will be dardy again. It’s only DeShawn who’s still treating her like she’s air.

He should talk to Evie. She looks so miserable, fidgeting with that emu feathers pendant she keeps on her desk. But DeShawn knows that today is not a good day to do that. There’s tension between them, some anger and resentment and it’s not just Evie who’s at fault; he crossed the line too. He needs a clear head to have that conversation. He wants to do it right; he owes her that much.   Today his head is filled with noise.

Currently, you were underneath your blanket while laying on your bed. The lights were off, but the window let the sun's rays into the room.

Your mind was overwhelmed. You couldn't stop thinking about the conversation that you had with Thirteen.

Those messages that she showed you were fake -- is what you wanted to say, but you knew she wouldn't do something like that. Neither would Solomon. Right?

What motive does he have? Did he sacrifice many years of friendship over something small? How did he benefit from this? ...What if this whole time, he was using you for something?

There were many thoughts inside your head that it was overwhelming.

There was a knock at the door that made you jump. You checked your phone, the last message Satan sent was a few minutes ago. He couldn't have arrived so quickly... Maybe.

Another knock. If you didn't open the door, he would eventually leave.

"Yeah, I'll just stay here! He'll lea-" your thoughts were interrupted by someone opening the door.

"You have to lock your door, it's dangerous to leave it unlocked," Satan announced his presence. You quickly put your face into your pillow, not wanting to get scolded by Satan.

Footsteps could be heard until there was a weight on your bed.

"You can't hide forever, you know?" Satan softly spoke to you, as if you were a kitten.

"I'm sorry," you apologized, not knowing if he heard you. You heard him rummaging through a bag.

"Don't apologize, I'm not here to scold you," Satan tried to pry away your blanket, but you held onto it tight.

"If you show me your face, I'll make you hot chocolate," Satan bribed you

"With extra marshmallows?" You mumbled out, almost inaudible, but Satan hummed. You hesitantly sat up, though you were looking down at your lap.

Satan put a hand on your chin and made you face him, his hand was warm. He softly smiled at you, moved some hair strands away, and went to wipe your face with the tissues that he brought. Next to him was a bag full of stuff. Considering that it took him a few minutes to arrive, these items must be from his dorm.

You didn't realize how comforting his touch was until he was finished. He threw the tissues into the trashcan next to your bed. He was about to stand up, but you quickly grabbed his hand to stop him. This shocked the both of you.

"Stay..." you whispered out, you didn't have enough courage to look at his eyes.

"I'm just going to go make you your hot chocolate, I did promise you," Satan softly spoke.

"Not yet," you said. You realized how Satan grounded you, how he kept the overwhelming thoughts away.

He must've realized what was going on and decided to scoot next to you. He intertwined your hands together. You decided to put your head on his shoulder. A few seconds passed until you felt soft on your forehead. It took you a second to realize that Satan kissed your forehead.

You closed your eyes, the warmth from Satan's body lulling you to sleep.

This song has been stuck in my head for a while from the show and it’s really bugging me. It’s catchy yes, still… it’s kinda alluring? Such a simple song yet very catchy. I find myself humming it while doing house work or in the Starlight theater. Actually, I feel like the song is more prevalent there than when I’m far away from the theater…

Evie (despite how weird they are now) has encouraged me to keep going to the theater when I’m upset. I don’t know why they are so secretive all of a sudden. But they’ve been obsessed with clocks and time. Almost like Tinky from the show.

Since I cannot get that Mummy (1999) dreamling AU out of my brain, here comes my reflections on who's who in said AU (for “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns”):

Hob would obviously be Rick (ex soldier, survivor, knows how to fight, was probably arrested while he was drunk in a bar, himbo, so in love with Dream, accepts to lead the way to Hamunaptra in spite of the fact he nearly died there the last time only because Dream asked (and saved his life but he probably would have done it anyway), basically would follow Dream to the end of the world (including the Scorpion King’s lost Oasis))

Dream would be Evie (smart, kind of awkward, likes to be right, actually passionate (although he tries to keep a cold/stiff demeanor), so in love with Hob (though doesn’t want to acknowledge it at first), doesn’t know how to fight but would still fight anyone and anything that dares threaten Hob - also he always dresses in black no matter the weather and has a pet Raven named Matthew because I said so!)

Death would be Johnathan (yes they don’t exactly have the same temper but she too has a sense of humour - and kind of likes to (gently) annoying her brother. She is friendly, adaptive and adventurous.She found they Key to Hamunaptra, she’s the reason Dream and Hob met in the first place, and she probably knows what’s up between her brother and their new friend right from the start.)

Roderick Burgess as Imhotep (who was condemn to endure the Curse of Hom Dai as a punishment for trying to revive his dead son (and tries to do it again when he return as an immortal creature)

The Corinthian as a mixt between Beni and Dr. Allen Chamberlain (less of a soldier and more of an Egyptologist. Never met Hob but shares history with Dream (they strongly dislike each other). He is smart and suave and found a way to Hamunaptra by himself (probably assassinating a few people in the process) and leads the American team at least partly to piss Dream off. The American team is made of some of the Collectors (except they are not serial killers but greedy archeologists))

Lucienne as Dr.Terence Bey (curator of the Cairo Museum of Antiquities, secretly member of a society set to prevent Roderick’s return, and Dream’s boss (I just love the idea of Lucienne being the boss in this one!). Oh, yeah, and in this version she survives!)

Ethel Cripps as the warden of Cairo Prison (who accepts to release Hob in exchange for a percentage of whatever riches they may find in Hamunaptra. Her son John Dee may be the one to resurrect Imothep (again) in the second movie in order to avenge her mother if she died during the expedition (and he holds Dream responsible for her dead).

Fiddler's Green as Winston Havelock and Izzy Buttons (who doesn’t die when his plane crashes so he can come back when the mummy returns but this time with a hot-air balloon)

As for Ardeth Bay, I am not quite sure. I thought of Rose (a bit young maybe? and I have no idea what to do with Jed in that scenario...) or maybe Alex Burgess (a descendant of Roderick making sure his ancestor doesn’t come back? but he could as well be a descendant whose ancestors never ceased to try and set Roderick free? (then there could be a subplot where Paul is one of the Medjai fighting to keep Roderick from resurrecting and they could fall in love Romeo and Juliet style?)), but in the end i think Johanna Constantine makes more sense (her job is basically to fight demons and other creatures of the like).

Finally, Lucifer would be no other than the Scorpion King (a powerful king with an entire army at their command...)

Also, In "The Return of the Mummy”, I could see Rose and Jed be distant relatives of Dream and Death (I mean it’s canon!). Jed being passionate about History and Egypt and ending up putting the Bracelet of Anubis on BUT I also really love a version in which Hob ends up wearing the bracelet (tell me he wouldn’t!) and thus gets kidnapped and Dream is REALLY pissed off about it! (in this version, nobody warns Hob that he has to enter the pyramid before the sun sets on the third day so he is all relieved when he gets reunited with Dream (who knows) in the Oasis only for Dream to panic because “why are you stopping to hug me? Start running to that Pyramid!!”). But then I don’t know what roles Rose and Jed could have in the story and I would like to include them!

Am I the only one who noticed inconsistancies (or are they deliberate?) in the characterization of DeShawn Jackson? (I think most viewers just see him as the most bland character of the show, but I like him).

So, at face value he's the young, eager guy, who's there to provide some comic relief. Mackey is there to be serious (and badass), Blue is the resident ND (genius), Evie is the rebel, Rosie is the experienced one and, well, JD is serious and badass too, because he and Mackey are E-GOATs (aaahhhh... is that a spoiler? I think I'll put the rest under the cut, because I'll be refering to 1x06 in this essay ;) )

Okay, so DeShawn is your comic relief young, eager newbie.

But then, in ep. 2 he says he's been to war, so he knows what it takes to kill a person while looking them in the eye. Huh? (also, he's really uncomfortable without a gun, that makes sense)

But then, he's the guy, who, in the first three episodes was held at gunpoint exactly three times... That sort of contradicts the training it takes to go to war, right? Now, once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence, but three times? That's a pattern.

He's saved by Mackey, by Evie (that was cute;) and, well, that one time he saves himself and Evie, so that's good for him.

He's a romantic. He believes in true love (my gosh, him and Blue!! I don't ship easly, but I could ship that. But then, I could also ship him with Evie, so I'm torn).

There was also that jab Evie made about how the way he walks is weird and he should consult someone about it. My whumper brain wants to do things with this. You know, backstory headcanons are brewing. Will it go anywhere, or was it just one more instance of "let's make fun of DeShawn for no reason"?

And then, there was 1x06.

So we start off with some fitness tests which Dee fails miserably, to Evie's astonished glee (I love the faces she makes). He chalks it up to his opponent being big and all, but then, during the course of the episode, he knocks out an equally big guy, and then tops it off with some mini-parkour moves. What's up with that?

Are the writers really all over the place with him, just throwing shit and looking what sticks? Or is there a method to the madness? I mean. I can headcanon the hell out of it. I can connect the dots (many dots). But. Should I? Is there a point?

I'm hoping the next episode will be Dee-centric, and will explain some things to me.

Alright, Maybe Evie was right (I hate that I have to admit that) that we actually saw this damn show, i barely look at my childhood stuff but, I found these.

I vaugly remember this song that was associated with Pokey. “La dee dah” something something

He would always sing it, and his voice was always strange. But, I was like four I didn’t think too much of it. I liked his segment. It was some kind of theater/art segment. “Pokey’s art corner? Pokey’s theater? Pokey’s something I don’t remember,

He was just an artsy type of guy. I was getting into ballet at the time so I would dance to his music segments.
