I’ve been reading a lot of stories I want to rec recently, so I thought I’d try a bumper fic rec post of my most recent bookmarked fics. Read on for Animal Transformation, Medieval Fantasy, Canon Divergence, Shrunkyclunks and Shrinkyclinks and Florida!

The description in this is just so delicate, and the emotional punch it packs is considerable. This is the Bucky waking up out of cryo in Wakanda tearful reunion that you’ve been longing for.

20,000 - 50,000 words

This was a reread. I read an animal transformation fic (and then several more) and it made me want to reread this one, where Winter Soldier! Asset! Bucky is transformed into a dog and (unsurprisingly) gets adopted by a lonely Steve. They are what each other needs, and this is a beautiful, touching ultimately feel good story.

First things first, leveragehunters’ On a Pale Horse is one of my favourite Stucky fics, so I was predisposed to a) like a Bucky is a horse transformation fic and b) compare any horse transformation fics to that one. This story really stands up. It’s different enough that it doesn’t feel rehashed, and the essential things I love about On a Pale Horse (winning trust, equine devotion, essential goodness of the ‘rider’ character, stubborn not-a-horse antics) are all here.

Second things second, I was a horsey girl growing up. I love horses. I loved that so much of this story was about building trust between Steve and horse!Bucky, and I enjoyed all the talk about halters and lunging.

This story has so much heart and humour. There’s the usual gang (Sam is delightful here), and such a kind, stubborn, good Steve. I really adored it.

*Examines fingernails* so, you know that animal transformation fic reading binge I mentioned earlier? This is the last one. In fact, I went to leveragehunters’ AO3 page looking for On a Pale Horse (have I said how much I love that fic enough yet?) after reading The Winter Stallion, and found this story instead. It’s a Ladyhawke AU. I had to google what Ladyhawke was, and didn’t bother until after I’d read the fic. You don’t need to know anything about the film to enjoy this story. It is set in a medieval fantasy world and features my favourite flavour of pre-serum Steve (stubborn, slightly bitter, quick and with so much innate goodness, honour and self-sacrificing idiocy). He falls in with the unlikely, bickering and mysteriously-cursed duo of Bucky (grumpy, oddly vulnerable, ultimately awesome) and Sam, who is kind, witty and Sam (is there ever a bad Sam?). Also, importantly, there is a horse and he is the best horse (just ask Bucky).

We are (briefly) back to the real world after my animal transformation fic spree. And oh my goodness, if you read nothing else on this list, read this fic. It’s a Winter Soldier recovery fic except that it isn’t, it’s a Steve recovery fic. Steve has all his powers in this story, but he is so human. He is brave and loyal and snarky, but he is also so, so vulnerable, and this story shows him feeling lost and little and hurt in a way that not many stories do. Bucky is equally awesome - he’s so clearly the Bucky of the 1930’s whose main objective was keeping Steve safe. This story also has one of my favourite versions of Tony as a side character.

Alright, we have skipped happily back into medieval fantasy land for this fic. It features another of my favourite kinds of AU Steves. He’s strong and clever and has proven himself in battle, and has the confidence that goes with that, but he still remembers being the scared young man defending his village with tools not weapons. He’s honorable and down to earth, strategic but also so open to love. This fic has some of my favourite tropes (identity porn! Forbidden love! So much pining!) and is such a fun romp through this ‘swords and honour’ landscape.

And now a different kind of swords and honour. I’m very late to the party in reading this, but if you haven’t come across this Shrunkyclunks story, then do yourself a favour and settle in to read. This fic has so much humour, warmth and passion with a side of politics (but in a good way!) Bucky is a civil rights attorney, and the fact that the story is tagged for period typical homophobia and transphobia and is set in the modern day tells you the rest.

But what this story does really well is make you passionate and pissed off (alongside Bucky and Steve) about civil rights, whilst primarily being a romance story that is fun and positive. There are so many deft character touches as well that round out the supporting cast into lovable, memorable individuals (Yelena!!).

WIPs

I’m trying to be better about reading WIPs. In that spirit, here are two that I’ve started and which I’m really enjoying.

Currently 10/27 chapters posted (74,000 words)

In which MCU-verse Bucky and Steve retire and move to Florida. Steve gets into surfing and Bucky is busy gardening. Okay, my summary sucks but this story is brilliant. I’m a sucker for fic where the author clearly knows their shit. Florida is sketched so well in this story that it’s practically its own character. The story is about how being in this place (that is shown for all its wonders, flaws, and idiosyncrasies) is challenging, helping and healing a Bucky and Steve who are both in pretty bad shape at the beginning.

Currently 5/30 chapters posted (24,000 words)

This is an A/B/O AU set during WW2. Omega! Pre-serum!Steve is a mathematical genius recruited to try to break Nazi codes. There’s the right amount of codebreaky detail which goes into (to me - someone who knows nothing about codes) impressive depth and feels very authentic. This story is just getting started, but so far the characters are great (there’s an excellent supporting cast - Darcy and Wanda are early faves), and Steve is such a good mix of physical frailty and mental power. I’m interested to see how the A/B/O elements play into the story as it progresses. The setting and moreso the feel of the setting - the frustration, desperation and guilt as the team struggle to make sense of the codes and inform troop movements - is really well-realised and gripping.

And he’s not hiding it particularly well, if the way Steve’s smirking at him when Bucky pulls himself together enough to actually look at his face is anything to go by.

In which Bucky most resolutely, definitively, uncompromisingly does not fuck on the first date…

so basically, this fic is an attempt to combine two of my very favorite things: shrunkyclunks, and captain america: the winter soldier (2014). my first working title was 'catws except there's no ws'

you know how steve and nat seek shelter at sam's after the camp lehigh disaster? yeah, well what if bucky, sam's bestie and running buddy, had been over at sam's that morning? what if he still had a history with hydra and a metal arm, but was just a millenial with a crush on cap and eager to get in on the action and punch some nazis?

i'm almost scared i bit off more than i can chew with this fic -- and the fact that i have been a total nut case the last few months is not helping -- but i really want to make it work and am trying my best. hopefully it will see the light of day soon.

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

I am taking a couple into next year with me. They are in varying stages right now. But I am taking my puzzling championship wip with me, Unmoored (a Shrunkyclunks wip where a grieving Bucky gets stranded on an island in a small village for a few months where Steve lives and no one knows Steve is cap/alive except the people in the village) and The Nanny AU I recently started.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

I like rereading my fics in general but I think I have reread It's a Date! and Tough Act the most 🥰

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

It was a really tough one and I don't think it's for everyone but I think Hairpin Triggers. It was hard to write but I am really proud of the end result.

Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?

I’m very much a one fic at a time type of gal. Exceptions are when I’m doing multiple bangs and they overlap (in which case I’ll try and do a bit of work on the second bang fic before finishing the first one), or when I’m working on a long fic and I just happen to get the urge to write a quick oneshot! I just know that if I start working on multiple fics at the same time, too many of them would never actually be finished 😅

I love the peace and quiet of this place, but some days I do miss the bustle and the excitement, y’know? I miss jogging in Prospect Park. I miss swearing at tourists. Fuck, I miss hotdogs.”

Steve groans. “God, me too.” He bites into his sandwich, humming appreciatively when the flavors hit his taste buds. “Not quite a New York hotdog, but still pretty good.”

Bucky snorts. “Thanks, Steve.”

“Anytime, Buck.”

Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

I title my fics after I write them, and I come up with them with GREAT PAIN AND EFFORT. Titling fics is almost as terrible as writing fic summaries lol. Again, the exception is when I’m doing a Bang, and I need to submit a (working) title before finishing the fic. And I usually pic lyrics or titles of my favourite songs because I’m entirely unoriginal and not very inventive when it comes to titles 😬

I need Shrinkyclinks like I need air man. Itty bitty Steve running around and causing issues and being the scary one while his giant buff boyfriend Bucky is polite and always calming Steve down and occasionally apologizing for his outbursts. Idk man they're just so cute. Shrunkyclunks is also dope love when Bucky doesn't realize Steve is Captain America. It's so good.

Since Sebastian said he wants to do a comedy or a Christmas movie, my brain is just going into overdrive with Stucky fic ideas, especially given Seb’s love for romcoms.

Like, a Shrunkyclunks, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days sorta AU (lightly inspired), where Bucky is a writer for a magazine. Of course, Bucky loves fashion, but writing puff pieces on what celebrities are wearing is not what he had in mind when he decided to pursue writing as a career. He’s been trying to get his boss to let him write more serious stuff, maybe move on to one of the other magazines at the large media conglomerate, so far unsuccessfully.

But then he’s given the assignment of interviewing Captain America and get his opinion on 21st century fashion and his own style, which somehow has made its way past the Avengers’ PR team (Natasha might have played some role in that after looking into Bucky). Sam, one of his friends and colleagues, who writes for a sports magazine under the same company, challenges him to a bet that Bucky’s boss jokingly agrees to participate in. The bet being not only to get the notoriously media-shy Steve Rogers to talk to him about something more than fashion, which Bucky can use to try to convince the higher ups of his potential, but also to get Cap to agree to go on a date with him. Bucky, with feigned confidence, immediately agrees, although he’s pretty sure he won’t be able to do any of it. Writing is his strength, and he can be charming as an interviewer, but his dating life is a mess. No way that he can convince someone like Steve Rogers to open up, let alone go out on a date with him. But it’s worth a try, because Bucky can’t stand the idea of having to write about another Met gala next year.

Meanwhile, Steve - who has been out of the ice for a couple of years now and avoids giving out interviews as much as he can, only making exceptions for press conferences post-Avengers missions - is seething with anger. He refuses to do an interview with some shallow, materialistic fashion writer just because the others think it could give the Avengers some nice press. He hates reporters, always emphasizing how out of touch he must be, how he’s some blunt relic from the 40s and how he’s never given a chance to actually express himself. Natasha tells him to give this Barnes guy the benefit of the doubt, but Steve balks at the idea that a fashion writer of all people could be open minded enough to actually gain an understanding of who Steve really is. So, like the little shit he is, he challenges her to a bet. Steve wins if either he or the reporter storms out of there out of pure frustration. Assuming he’ll only get questions about the Cap uniform, his khakis, and how seeing revealing clothing nowadays must seriously shock his delicate 1940’s sensibilities, he’s pretty sure this is an easy win.

But of course, neither of them is actually prepared for the person they’re about to meet.

Apologies for the delay, folks! Due to some IRL shenanigans the Shrunkyclunks Bang will be starting a little later than originally expected, but we're still kicking! So for all those who are excited to join us for our second year, I am pleased to announce that sign-ups will now be opening on February 19th. If you’re interested, keep an eye on any of our social media accounts for the additional announcement that will be made with the sign-up link included!

Additionally, our Rules and Guidelines have recently been revamped, so we’d like to STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to take the time to go through them even if you already read them last year. You will be held responsible for knowing AND following our current rules and still be held accountable regardless of if you’ve read them or not.

Finally! Here’s a quick peek at some of the rules from last year that HAVE NOT changed:

Fic drafts are still required with check-ins. Same goes with your art. If you don’t give us access to see them then your check-in is not done.

We will not chase after you during check-ins – you’ll get a notification when they’re open, when they’re about to close and if we need a re-submission, but that’s it. For this reason, be on top of deadlines and notify a mod if you aren’t getting our emails.

Penalties for dropping WITHOUT a really good reason after being paired up are never going away. Ever.

Extensions will only be made for emergencies – plan your time wisely. Know the schedule!

And here’s a sneak peek at the rules HAVE changed:

Serial posting is now allowed, WOO HOO! You will have an assigned week to post everything regardless of how many chapters you have. No exceptions!

Why are we bringing these up? Because last time these rules in particular bothered certain participants who either didn’t see them upon signing up or just didn’t read them at all and decided that they wanted to be that person who bombards mods with complaints. So we want to make sure people know in advance what these policies are so that you can make the call over whether this is the right bang for you.

We’d love to have as many participants as possible, but the rules we have now will not be changing from this point forward. We understand if that doesn't work for everyone and no one will blame you for deciding to do what’s best for you.

I pick just one?????? One favorite fic??? How why how?? I loveee haylofts & cashmere so much, and I can’t believe that’s your first Evanstan fic because you wrote them so well and it has me begging for more. I loveee Be Kind, Rewind because of how much the story focuses on both Steve and Bucky finding their way, and you so beautifully intertwined that with perfect 90s references, fun, and idiots in love. I loveee everything about al, pal and alpine, because it’s so real, and it brings me so much joy to see this little family go through all the ups and downs, whether its Bucky & Steve’s relationship or their parenting. off the record is basically my favorite type of fic; shrunkyclunks, they’re both little shits, they finally figure out that maybeeee they’re actually into each other (god that moment when they open up 😭). And then, goddd TEJODORE. Then there’s lane lines. An absolute masterpiece, that I will screaming about forever. It’s so incredibly written and I’m just so in awe of how you can do it all: pacing, world building, the right characterization, how you’re not afraid to make characters real and flawed, but never ooc. They’re all real, funny, exciting, moving….yeah I’m just a really big fan of everything you do, except for the overthinking™️. Anyway, I love you 💕💕💕💕
