She has performed alongside artists such as Gingee, Bohan Phoenix, and Guy Tang and has been featured on NBC Asian America and Buzzfeed. Ally creates what she calls "Filipino folk fusion" pieces where she blends traditional Filipino dances with hip hop. Enjoying art is part of healing. -- Sony Robles Florendo

One year after Baltimore-based Filipino American artist Sony Robles Florendo began her painting career at the age of 77, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Lack of stamina due to cancer treatment stopped her from touching a brush for a year. In a 2015 episode of StoryCorps, Florendo recalls lying down in hospital beds, but still having that creative feeling, imagining herself painting the ceiling of her hospital room. Florendo has since recovered with a prodigious body of work, exhibiting in both the U.S. and the Philippines.

Explore Florendo’s work in the “Memories & Metaphors” section of the Asia North 2020 online exhibition, Tradition-Memory-Transformation.
