For nearly as long as I can remember, I have struggled to know myself and to articulate any definite sense of selfhood. I have often felt alienated from my own body and untethered from the fragile relationships I have formed with those around me; everything that was supposed to ground my being in the world has felt transient. It's as though I get lost inside myself, unsure of where I begin and end. I have often seen myself as some sort of ghostgirl, trapped inside someone else's body- this person who I don't fully understand, and who I can't totally identify whenever I look in the mirror.
I haven't always liked the girl whose reflection gazes back at me. When I have felt especially trapped or anguished, I have even found myself wishing her dead. But I have also desperately wanted to understand who she is- and how she is supposed to be me. At some point, I think I made friends with her. I feel less untethered. I catch glimpses of myself in her smile, in her tears, her joy and her pain. We're not so disconnected.
In his seminal work "The Phenomenology of Perception", French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty wrote that "True reflection presents me to myself not as idle and inaccessible subjectivity, but as identical with my presence in the world and to others, as I am now realizing it: I am all that I see, I am an intersubjective field, not despite my body and historical situation, but, on the contrary, by being this body and this situation, and through them, all the rest." I have come to think of my Self first and foremost as an embodied collection of deeply subjective, felt experiences moving through time and space- and this has helped me to better embrace the change and uncertainty of inhabiting a body in constant flux, interacting with people who come and go. I continue to ground myself myself in myself. And I keep making sense of who I am past, present, and future as a sum of all my parts, being in the world. I think that's who I am. Can you see it?
