The Lane of Glowing Flowers
This is a modified version of a snippet I cut from A Summer with the Immortal. It was originally a flashback where Taryn remembered the start of her relationship with Michael (her ex-boyfriend who gave her her signature hourglass necklace). I decided to post this for Valentine’s Day.
1K words.
The graduation party had stretched on for longer than planned. When Taryn and Michael stepped out the doors of Chicory Vale High School, the sun was halfway below the horizon.
It had been a good time. Taryn usually disliked parties - too loud and hectic - but this one was just fine. (It helped that there wasn’t a band this time. She still winced at the memories of last year.) And she’d gotten to spend it with Michael, her unspoken crush.
By coincidence, Taryn and Michael lived on neighbouring streets, so they were going to walk home together. Their homes weren’t far from the school - not far enough to make taking a riding-animal worth it - so it wouldn’t be a long walk.
Yet Taryn found herself wishing the walk were longer. The faster she got home, the less time she would spend with Michael.
Then an idea came to her. It was a great one: not only would she get to spend a little more time walking with Michael, but she might just impress him.
“Hey, I know another path home,” she said, hoping her nervousness wasn’t creeping into her voice. “It’s a more interesting route. Want to take it?”
Michael thought for a moment.
“Sure.”
Success! Taryn looked away to hide her grin.
She led him through an alley that went to the space behind the street. On the other side was an expanse of grass with a small hill in the middle. If you walked through this field on a diagonal path, up and to the left, you would reach the street next to the one where Taryn lived.
“It’s dark out here.” Michael looked around. “Are you sure about this interesting route?”
“I’ve walked this path a hundred times,” Taryn reassured him. “Wait a little bit, then it won’t be so dark anymore.”
They walked to the hill and climbed up its gentle slope. They were well behind the street now, and it was almost pitch-dark: the sun had fully set, and the moon was but a thin crescent tonight. Michael was about to say something when they crested the top of the hill and he saw what Taryn had been talking about.
At the bottom of the hill was a long lane of bioluminescent plants. They were a different species from the lamp-plants used to light homes and streets: instead of small yellow-leaved herbs, they were tall sunflower-looking plants with thorny stems and blue petals. The petals were where the light came from. Not wasting a moment, Taryn and Michael went down the slope and into the pale light.
Normally, Taryn would’ve occupied herself by looking at the flowers. She never got tired of them. But tonight was different: tonight, her eyes were drawn only to Michael’s face. His strong nose, his sharp jaw, the fluffy hair that fell into his eyes, all silhouetted by the ambient cyan glow of flowerlight… he was so handsome.
Suddenly, a loud chittering sound came from somewhere within the flowers. Taryn jumped, and Michael staggered back. A yelp came from behind her, accompanied by a sound of crunching leaves: he must’ve fallen over.
“Are you okay?” she asked, rushing to help him up.
“The thorns cut me up a bit.” He winced as he got to his feet, and Taryn could see a tiny line of blood on his forearm. “What the hell was that?”
Taryn looked in the direction the sound had come from, and promptly spotted the culprit. A huge insect, a cricket or something similar, was perched on one of the leaves.
Taryn stared at it. It wriggled its antennae back.
“It’s just an insect,” she said.
“Would’ve been good to have known that,” Michael muttered. “I thought it was something dangerous.”
“I don’t think there are any dangerous animals around here. We’re still in town, you know.”
“Right. It just looks wild out here, that’s all.”
It was then that Taryn realized she was holding hands with Michael. With a slight blush, she wondered whether she should let go. On the one hand (no pun intended), it would be less awkward, but on the other hand… did she really want to bring this moment to an end?
Michael looked down at their clasped hands, evidently coming to the same realization.
A flicker of apprehension went between them. What should they do? Should they unclasp their hands, or…
Before she could reconsider, Taryn squeezed tighter.
Was it just her, or could she feel his heartbeat quickening in his wrist? And if she could, could he feel hers too?
“Let’s go,” she said.
They walked, hand-in-hand, to the end of the lane of glowing flowers. Then they ventured through the darkness again. Finally, the two of them reached another alley and stepped out onto the sidewalk. They were almost home: Taryn’s house was just across the street. As they started to cross it, Michael suddenly coughed.
“Taryn, before you go home…” he started, then wavered.
“Go on,” she said, knowing - or hoping she knew - what he was about to say.
“I just think you should know that I like you. I like you a lot.”
“I like you, too,” Taryn replied.
That was it. It was so easy.
What wasn’t easy was deciding what they should do next. Should they kiss or something?
“What about a date?” Michael asked when they stopped at Taryn’s doorstep. “We can go tomorrow.”
“Great idea! Where?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. You choose.”
Taryn thought for a moment, and remembered that Michael liked trinkets.
“Let’s meet at the thrift store on Cinnamon Street,” she said. “Ten o’clock.”
“It’s a date!”
They bid each other goodbye (and goodnight), and Taryn stepped inside.
“How was the party?” her mother asked, rushing to greet her. “I was starting to get worried.”
“It was great. Just went on longer than planned.”
“What do you want for dinner?”
“Pasta’s fine.”
As Taryn ate her dinner, and until she went up to bed, she couldn’t stop thinking about the date to come. When she fell asleep, that route of luminescent flowers showed up in her dreams. But there was no dark grass on the other side: instead the flowers led to tomorrow, a promise from a budding love.

“SHYLIGHT” by studiodrift
the concept of these moving flower lights comes from looking at its defence mechanism and how some flowers close at night to conserve its resources. the idea is to make the lights look “alive” as if to replicate nature as well as its behaviour, and to bring it indoors - accentuating its beauty and discarding its vicious life cycle with technology.

Bolylight LED Cherry Blossom Tree 8ft Review https://youtu.be/tPOF7lNR9IQ This light looked cool in the product listing, but I was afraid it'd be very hard to put together. It arrived in a box similar to a christmas tree box and was well secured so nothing had moved during shipment. It was easy to take out and super easy to put together. The whole thing took less than 10 minutes and I was filming the process as you can see in the video, so would have been even faster without that. The branches slide in nicely and there are bolts to tighten down to keep it more secure. I didn't arrange the branches to make it look ideal for this review, but was very impressed with the initial product. The branches move easily and it comes with a remote as well. The cord is long enough so you don't have to place directly in front on an outlet. It also came with small stakes so could use outdoors by the looks of it. It doesn't tip easily, but is light enough to move around without difficulty. I would definitely recommend and may get another for our patio area. Spirits, Ghosts and Cryptics
(This info was originally meant to be kept exclusive to my series bible "Guide to the Land's Star" but I've decided it would be fun to share this here too!)
The clans, like many societies, have other beings they believe in or pray to, such as certain spirits, ghosts, and cryptics. Here are the most famous among the Land's Star:
The Sun- This spirit is said to be the father of the ancient clans and of cats themselves. Cats also believe that he is the creator of all living things on the earth, though not necessarily the planet itself
The Moon- AKA Silverpelt. She is said to be the mother of the ancient clans, and of cats themselves. Clan cats believe she watches out for them, taking a rest only one day a lunar cycle for herself. She lets cats come to live within her pelt when they die in the mortal world so she can protect them for the rest of existence. This is where Starclan resides. Cats believe she is the being who gives prophecies for Starclan to relay, and casts judgement on those who arrive in the Twilight Passage. She's also believed to be the one to give out powers. This is the only divine spirit that Oceanclan wholeheartedly believes in, as the moon is believed to control the tides
Lionclan, Cheetahclan, Tigerclan, Leopardclan, and Lynxclan- Ancient clans said to exist long before cats were created. Their stories didn't come into existence until after the clans had formed. The names of these beings were coined by former kittypets who had learned of these big cats from magic vision boxes in their Twoleg dens. Each big cat represents one of the modern day clans: lion for Marshclan, cheetah for Grassclan, leopard for Treeclan, tiger for Oceanclan, and lynx for Mountainclan
Wisp Of The Mist- A ghost who's said to watch out for Mountainclan. She is a beautiful white cat with long glossy fur and bright silver eyes. Many Mountainclan cats believe she is a protector who looks out for the innocent and guides wandering kits to safety. Queens and apprentices especially believe in this entity, claiming to see her crouched in the darkest corner of their dens, or silhouetted against the moon when they're out hunting at night. It's said if one listens hard enough when patrolling through the mountains, you may be able to hear her speak to you; but only if you're pure of heart. It's common for kits to claim meeting this mysterious molly in dreams, or when returning to camp after sneaking away without permission.  No one knows exactly where this spirit comes from, but it's believed that Wisp is the soul of a cat who was alive during the time of the ancients, or around the time of the colonies
Church- A ghost of kittypet legend. Some housecats believe this spirit comes to guide the recently deceased to the stars, and teaches them how to be like their ancestors. This tom has no specific features, but its said a cat will recognize Church upon first meeting
Sea Breeze- A spirit who was alive as the clans were founded. She's said to be a silver and white tabby with long wavy fur which resembles waves. It's said that her spirit appears to those who are lost-moreso in a metaphorical sense than literal-so that she can guide them. This ghost is mostly believed in Oceanclan
Flowerlight- The first Den Mother of the Land's Star. Queens pray to this spirit in particular for guidance with parenthood, especially if they are raising their first litter. They also pray to her for protection of their litters against illness such as kitten cough and The Fade.
The Birch-Furred Monster- A gorgeous pale gray cat with spots on their fur that resemble the pattern of birch wood. They present themselves as a molly at first, to draw in toms (and molly attracted she-cats). Once she's reeled a victim in, she'll transform into a terrifying monster who consumes the cats she's enchanted
Ashensky- A vengeful spirit who seeks out unfaithful cats and lures them to their deaths. Legend has it this cat was cheated on in life, later sacrificing themself in battle to prove their love, of which would never be returned. Instead of resting in peace, they willingly returned to the living world as a ghost, seeking to write the wrong they had faced in their own lifetime. To those who's hearts have been broken, Ashensky is a saint whom they pray to and hope to meet. Meanwhile, those who think impurely about a cat who is not their mate will live in fear, hoping to never be tricked by this angry spirit. This cat has no set gender, as it changes to accommodate with their latest victim's romantic/sexual preference.
Skin Snatcher- a terrifying cryptic that's said to lurk within the fog. No one knows exactly what this creature is; sometimes it looks like a fox, another time it may look like a raccoon, a dog, or a cat. Occasionally it can stand upright like a Twoleg. It's most tell tale feature is its odd pink skin and bulging eyes. Stories say that if you're out lurking alone at night, and a dense fog rolls in, you might begin to be stalked by the Skin Snatcher. If it catches you, it will shred off your fur and steal your skin. The rest of your remains disappear, never to be found. Though this cryptic is mostly discussed as a means to scare kits and apprentices into staying in camp at night, it does continue to scare cats long into their adulthood. Many elders do believe this to be a real creature ((and it technically is! The legends are based on animals who have mange or some other type of skin problems which cause one to lose their fur))
Screech Beast- A monster said to be faster than the wind, and louder than anything a cat has ever heard. They're made of metal and are as large as two trees. Dead or injured Twolegs can often be found around it, partially digested, victims of it's carnage. Screech Beasts have been confirmed to exist, many years ago, but only one has ever been found and it was dead. Although there are rumors of cats seeing them alive, feasting upon Twolegs like prey in lines. But nobody in the Land's Star has seen one in recent generations. Though kittypets might occasionally mention them, referring to them as "air planes". They've tried on numerous occasions to convince the clans these monsters are the same beings as the odd loud birds they see flying in the sky every once in a while. But cats of the Land's Star consider them to be different species, as one is incredibly small and always out of reach.
