Buddy Brown, one of the first SR-71 Blackbird pilots, wrote down some of his adventures during his 30 years in the US Air Force. The following is in Buddy’s own words about his first flight over Hanoi with RSO’s David Jensen.
‘The first sorties I flew, Dave Jensen and myself were scheduled as a double looper over north Vietnam.
‘A double loop means you fly over north Vietnam once, descend… refuel in Thailand airspace, and then make a second pass on your return to Kadena. The route was generally: depart Kadena, fly subsonic to the first refill point ARCP approximately 200 nmi south of Kadena, get a max load of fuel, cruise to a point southeast of DaNang, skirting unfriendly radar on the flight down, turning north, flying into the Gulf of Tonkin, entering north Vietnam in the vicinity of Haiphong, crossing north Vietnam just took about 8 to 10 minutes. Deceleration into Thailand for a second air refueling, climb back to altitude, climb back to altitude over north Vietnam on the western border continue west into the Gulf of Tonkin and then again onto Kadena. Double engine flame-out
‘Dave notified me of the times when we were being looked at (Painted) by the Chinese and North Vietnam radar. And when a missile SA-2 was fired at us.
The sensors program via the ANS system to point angles when to turn on and off to operate normally.
At the start of our deceleration profile into our second air refueling, the problems began. At that time, My left generator went offline and wouldn’t reset. This is a NO-GO Situation.
At about the same time, I had a double engine flame out!🔥
‘We were going to make an emergency landing at Takhli AB, Thailand.
‘During the glide to restart altitude, of course, we lost cabin pressurization. So, our pressure suits inflate it, which made the cockpit movement a little more complicated. I called the tanker and said that we would be bottoming out early. At about 35,000 feet, I restarted both engines.
The second approach to Takhli I landed. Since a portion of the airbase was also a CIA compound, I taxied right into the CIA’s hanger. A recovery crew was sent down from Kadena the following day, and had the SR ready for a return flight to Kadena within a couple of days. The head of the CIA compound told me as I was dressing ready to leave.
“If you don’t tell anyone you were here, I won’t either!” This is a typical spy response they did however give me great service!’
Written by Linda Sheffield, previously published in aviation geek club, Scott Brown, son of Buddy is working on a book about his father. I can’t wait till it’s published. I will let you know.

hello everyone!! i'm the person who ran the TUA color polls for each of the seven siblings over the last few weeks. sorry it took so long but i'm here with results! i'm going to have charts first because they are flashy, easy to look at an understand, and also won't make the post too long above the keep reading :DD without further ado, the results of the poll: "Which color do you associate with [Hargreeves]?" !!
[keep in mind that the labels are above the charts, and viktor's may be hard to read because the chart maker i used only had a white background- same if you're on dark mode i apologize]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
analysis and words under here if you're interested lol :D it’s basically me just rambling for WAY TOO LONG about analysis lmao
okay so going into this, my hypothesis was that everyone’s colors were more or less determined by their s2 outfits. the fashion was iconic and stood out a lot, so it was very likely to stick in people’s brains.
my personal choices in order of siblings are: blue, orange, yellow, pink, green, red, and blue again. i chose green for five because of like.. chalkboards? i feel like he gives the green vibes y’a know? for the rest it was mostly determined by outfits and vibes etc.
but i’m sure nobody wants to hear me talk about my own opinions for too long [afterall, i didn’t even vote in the polls to keep them unbiased as possible] so here’s my analysis of YOUR choices
blue green and yellow were all the top choices for luther, which makes sense to me. blue ended up winning. they’re all generally cooler colors. when i think of luther i think of less stand-out colors, something solid and steady. blue is the most popular favorite color. it has a lot of range, just like luther. he wears it a lot throughout the seasons. blue is associated (not to bring color theory onto the color theory website or anything) with a feeling of sadness, and also responsibility. i really see him as a very tragic character tbh, à la s1 characterization.
diego was surprising to me, because even though my prediction of orange was correct there was a large amount of black in play. red was third after that. i don’t see it as that surprising considering his outfit from s1 lmao. let’s be honest they’re all emo anyways. red and orange are both associated with fire. diego probably would do arson if he thought he was doing the right thing. red is very agressive of a color, but orange is seen as a little less in your face. it can represent change too. but all in all, i think that it was chosen most often because of his orange and black polka dot shirt from s2. slay ig
allison was surprising to me at first, because i didn’t expect so much purple. i think that the pink might be because she’s a girl though. the red is what confused me the most. i would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts because i’m honestly not sure. @creepy-not-crawly (❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️) was talking with me about the polls, and said this about allison having yellow win:
Tumblr media
purple is associated with royalty and we all know she’s a queen. ofc, yellow won. we ALL remember that dress from s2. she’s also fairly optimistic for the first two seasons, and s3 largely revolves around her trying to force herself to be happy. yellow is associated with happy, and she was happy when she was with ray and trying to get it back s3. i have a post about the whole tone fuck up from s2/s3 here X so read that if you want!!
alright klaus. green came out (haha get it) in first and i think this one was essentially due to the association of ghosts and supernatural things in general with green. it’s SPOOOOOKY you know? it’s represents change and growth. the guy is trying. also the military is associated with green uniforms (at least in the US), so it can be easily linked back to the vietnam war incident from s1 and his connection to dave.
five had the most votes and it ended up with the closest results to one color taking half the pie. blue won, and red and black followed. i think for the red, it might be because of the metaphorical and literal blood on his hands. as far as i can tell, his powers- some of the most distinctly colored in the show- were a major factor: (credit to @dead-peppermint and @the-time-travelers-admirer in that order)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and his iconic uniform is mentioned as well. (thank god the old man got a change of clothes in s3, manifesting for s4) blue represents responsibility and we all know he has so much on his shoulders (insert joke about how hunched over he was s3 because aiden gallagher has been aging over these past 5 crazy years but he’s supposed to be playing a 13 y o boy). blue is also associated with calm- the man needs some calm in his life, à la that one part of s3. and last of all, sadness. i think most of us remember “HE’S LOVED THEM FOR LONGER THAN THEY’VE BEEN ALIVE” (link post cus i can’t find it) and he spent so long mourning his family, and is probably still mourning them.
og ben is probably the most underrated character imo, so i was excited for this one. i predicted red because of that one scene (UGHHH SO TRAGIC) when he was a kid and covered in blood like “can i go home now” (🥺). my dear mutual @/deadpeppermint from before left these thoughts:
Tumblr media
blue and purple tied for first, with red and black in second. honestly the leather jacket? hoodie? thing? and generally emo vibe really lent itself to that lmao. i think purple and blue are also really good colors for him, because he is a king and also responsible as heck (or at least, he tries in comparison). i’m still crying over how he left in s2 ISTG BRING HIM BACKKKK (srsly tho line i want to make a post about his absence affected s3 ughfhfhfhfhfhh) but that brings us back to blue meaning sadness, and oh my lord does this boy represent grief!!! he’s soooooo <3
and finally omg we are at viktor! this graph is fucking hilarious to look at because it just looks empty. the white violin had an association with color, and you could NEVER GUESS which one (sarcasm). i actually forgot about this next was blue, and i think it’s cute that blue was on top three, even top two for 5 6 7. and the. @/deadpeppermint once again with thoughts:
Tumblr media
SO TRUE!!
sorry for all of the errors i'm losing my mind.
anyways if anyone (unlikely lmao) has actually read this, or even scrolled down- hi! also goddamn! i hope someone enjoys this post because i have literally postponed so many projects for this weird little side thing. MMMMM DATA. i would make some kind of conclusion, but i'm damn tired and i think that my whole hypothesis kind of worked out! TYSM TO EVERYONE WHO VOTED!! and the people who left thing in the tags or talked to me about it? A MILLION LOVE FOREVER
i plan on doing more analysis in the future, but this is kind of dipping my toe in with a more fandom centered analysis. also! shameless self promotion! this whole thing started because i made a little animatic? thing? and started wondering about the colors because i ended up assigning them. CHECK IT OUT HERE X SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON MR BEAST TIKTOK FORTNITE. anyway. i literally have two other things that have been done for a while which i'll be posting in due time. if anyone is wondering why i haven't been posting art (idk, maybe?) it's because i was holding off on this crazy monster of a post! i'm really excited to make animatics because the music bro it's got me ITS GOT ME THIS DAMN SHOW. i am a self taught beginner artist tho, so i mean be ready for that. (that makes me sound so pretentious STOPP) anyways here! 🎩👑👒🧢 swaggy hats and a 🦉🦋🐞🐠🪿🦜🐁🦔 lil guy to go with it! 🥰🫵 see ya besties ily. i am so ill.

what do you think klaus and dave’s first big fight was about?
Given that Klaus spent his whole life being immortal and not knowing about it, I imagine that probably made him, um, a little reckless sometimes. I can imagine him doing something foolish on the battlefield and that leading to a fight.
I imagine it probably went something like this…
Tumblr media
CW: Vietnam war setting = bloody violence
Words: 1,150
The whole thing was fucked up from the start. They were dropped from the chopper on the other side of the treeline in broad daylight, which meant anyone in a ten mile radius would have known they were planning an ambush.
Fuck knows whose bright idea that was. It wasn’t their place to ask; they took their orders and they carried them out, no matter how suicidal the mission, no matter how braindead the person giving the orders.
No wonder there were rumours from other brigades about commanding officers getting fragged in their tents in the night.
Myths, probably.
Maybe.
For what little good it did, they had crouched in the dirt and crawled their way to the trail, digging a trench behind a small hedge row from which to plan their next move.
There was only one way out in or out of the village - an oasis positioned in the middle of a patchwork quilt of rice paddies - and this was it.
It was agreed. They would wait until dark and pick off the target if and when they decided to leave.
As the sun set, a silence fell on the village. The lights were snuffed out, one by one. The cows in the paddies ceased their mournful lowing.
Even the crickets were still.
The night sky was blank with clouds. No moon or stars to see by.
Just endless, velvet night.
And then, in the darkness, something took to the sky. Something small and light. A moving shadow, the size of a fist. And now falling, falling, finding the earth with a soft thud.
“Oh, shit,” someone whispered, right before the trench lit up with an infernal blast, kicking dirt and body parts into the air. An ear-splitting boom rattled around the valley, followed by the panicked screams to open fire.
But there was nothing to open fire onto. No muzzle flashes, no movement. Just another shadow lifting into the air and then another, and another. Thud… thud, thud.
“Get out of there! Move, move!”
Dave grabbed him, tugging him to his feet by the collar. Together they scrambled out of the trench and towards the trees as more explosions shook the earth, softening the wet dirt under their feet and hands.
Klaus’ ears were ringing, he couldn’t get his bearings. Darkness lay in every direction.
How many of their comrades had survived? They couldn’t know. The voices of those still alive bounced off the trees, the groans of the injured echoed around them.
“Stay down!” a voice called out - whoever was in charge now.
“We’re fucked,” hissed Dave. “We can’t see them, but they can see us. We’re sitting ducks.”
Klaus couldn’t make out Dave’s face, but he could certainly guess his expression, imagine the lines of his forehead coming together, the widened pupils and pale skin. A rabbit in headlights, awaiting the surety of its fate.
And that made Klaus thankful for the dark.
“What we need is a distraction,” he said.
And Dave had agreed. “That’s for sure.”
Thinking back on it, that probably wasn’t Dave’s way of giving him permission to do what he did next. But Klaus was never one to wait for permission anyway.
He rose to his feet and bolted from trees. “Yoo hoo! Over here!”
“Klaus, no!”
But Dave’s voice was already behind him. He darted across the trail, waving his gun high above his head, twirling in circles. “Hey, losers! Look at me!”
Bullets begin to whizz past his ears, pelting the ground by his feet. Klaus tapdanced around them as if starring in a Broadway musical.
“Wassamatter? Can’t kill me?”
From the trees where his comrades lay hidden, Klaus heard someone shout. “Motherfucker has lost his mind!”
“Who cares?” Someone answered back. “It’s working.”
The sound of gunfire exploded from the treeline. The enemy had made themselves known now, which meant his company stood a fighting chance. But it also meant Klaus was being shot at from all sides.
He ducked. Too late. A hard impact sent him flying to the ground. And then the open trench swallowed him whole like a yawning grave.
Tumblr media
He woke to Dave shining a torch in his face. A medic slapping him about the cheeks.
“He’s alive,” someone said with an incredulous laugh. “The crazy son of a bitch is alive.”
“Did I miss all the fun?” Klaus groaned, reaching a hand up to the back of his head. His helmet had fallen off and his hair was wet with a warm, viscous substance. His skull was pounding like hell.
“Klaus,” said Dave, leaning in to bring his face closer. “Do you have any idea what you just did?”
Klaus chuckled and tried to sit upright. “I believe I just saved the day with my spectacular dance moves.”
“No, you stupid bastard.” Dave grabbed Klaus’ vest with both hands and lifted him, pulling his face close to his own until they were almost touching and Klaus could feel Dave’s hot breath on his nose, the flecks of spittle landing on his cheeks. Dave’s teeth were gritted and his eyes were blazing with something Klaus had never seen there before: anger. “What the fuck did you think you were doing?”
“Woah, woah, woah…” Klaus attempted to wriggle free from the two hands holding him firm, but Dave wasn’t letting go. “Is that all the thanks I get? For saving your life?”
Dave’s voice pitched higher, the grip tightening in his two fists around Klaus’ clothes. “Don’t you understand. You could have been killed, you fucking asshole!”
And that’s when he saw it. Illuminated by the soft yellow torchlight. The look of fear in Dave’s eyes. The terror.
Klaus stopped struggling to break free and he felt Dave loosen his grip without letting go. The man looked desperate, distraught even.
“If something had happened to you…” he whispered, unable to piece the final jigsaw pieces of that sentence together.
“All right, all right.” Klaus wrapped his hands over Dave’s and brought his voice lower so the others wouldn’t hear it. “I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Dave let go of Klaus’ vest, allowing Klaus to sink back into the mud, which welcomed him again. He slumped on the opposite side of the trench, broken and defeated, and picked Klaus’ fallen helmet out of the mud. As he turned it in his hand, Klaus could see a hole at the back that wasn’t there before. Dave poked his finger through it and met Klaus’ eyes again.
“Just don’t… don’t fucking do something like that ever again.”
Klaus double checked the back of his head. Blood on his fingertips. But no bulletholes, no entry wounds. The bullet must have grazed him as he fell into the pit.
He let out a long breath and wiped his bloodied hand on his pants. “Okay. I won’t, I promise.”
And for once, he meant it.

okay so first of all listen to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
it's Dave's favorite song, do it for Dave. (it's also a bop, I knew this song before TUA and my jaw dropped when it was mentioned)
Now, here's an Umbrella Academy cold open we never got:
*The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance begins to play as the episode starts*
Now, we are in sun drenched Texas, 1963. The leader of the free world has just been shot.
David Katz is packing a bag.
He hugs his sister goodbye. His Uncle gives him a firm handshake.
Tomorrow morning, Dave will be at basic training. Two months from that--
Vietnam.
There is a montage of basic training, lingering moments of him disembarking for Vietnam, getting to base, Saigon, etc.
"From out of the East a stranger came, a law book in his hand, a man, the kind of a man the West would need to tame a troubled land,"
the POV shifts to someone in a dark suit preparing a sniper rifle and suitcase before taking the fedora that was beside the packing and putting it on.
"'Cause the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood, when it came to shooting straight and fast--"
A pause
"He was mighty good."
The short scenes continue, interspersing one another, the unknown person in a suit looking over papers, seemingly getting ready for something, Dave in the shit, fighting, camping, bleeding, and--
"The love of a girl can make a man stay on when he should go, stay on, just trying to build a peaceful life where love is free to grow,"
A sunny, warm shot of Klaus reaching out to frame Dave's face with his hands. It is a close shot, with the audience only able to see their faces from the cheek down to their shoulders, their smiles, and Klaus' hands, which are easily recognizable from the tattoos.
A shot of them embracing in the dark of night,
Another of them crawling through the jungle together
When the final showdown came at last, a law book was no good,"
The still unidentified figure it now in a heavily forested area, with similar foliage to what we've seen around Dave and Klaus, they are setting their things down and readying the sniper rifle.
"From the moment a girl gets to be full-grown, the very first thing she learns,"
Lingering shots on Klaus' actions as they head into the fight. Dave's last.
Klaus squeezes his hand for good luck, jingles Dave's dog tags where they rest around his neck, waiting for Dave to the do the same with his switched tags.
"When two men go out to face eachother, only one returns."
The US troops are position, fighting the Viet-Cong.
Everything goes silent. The fighting hasn't stopped, but there is no noise. No music, nothing.
A single bullet. Klaus' screams.
Everything returns to normal.
"Everyone heard two shots ring out, a shot made Liberty fall,"
The camera begins to track backwards, away from enemy lines, towards the thick wooded forest behind them.
"The man who shot Liberty Valance,"
The camera begins to slow, coming upon the figure with the briefcase and sniper rifle.
"He shot Liberty Valance,"
The camera slowly rises on the figure, from the grass, up to where they are kneeling, and to where they are holding the rifle. Their sleeve is pulled slightly down, revealing an Umbrella insignia tattooed there.
"He was the bravest of them all."
The camera allows a single look at an adult Number Five.
The screen goes black.

buzzcut moment real... as far as The War goes and this mans crazy ptsd how long do you think it took for him to open up abt his triggers to dave and for the two of them to work on addressing his mad trauma 🎤🤨🧡
ohhh man im imagining a couple of different scenarios for this but they all involve him being crossfaded as fuck because this man would never say this shit sober
the first is buzzcut and van d as the last couple stragglers at some sort of out-of-school staff party, maybe even before they start dating (idk if these happen irl but they did something like that on bob's burgers). they're in someone's backyard, just the two of them, and van d's holding out a joint and lighter and he's like "would you mind if-" and buzzcut gives him the go-ahead. van d lights up, takes a hit, and passes it to buzzcut, who says "fuck it" and goes for it, even though he's a very infrequent weed user (like, occasionally at parties, though i feel he doesn't get invited to many LOL; he probably used to smoke it more often in vietnam)
anyway, after a while, they're crossfaded on that, maybe even another joint and a few too many shitty beers. at some point they're just chatting and the walls come Down. bradley starts talking about (NOTE: most of this shit came from the backstory i gave him) his shitty childhood and how he ran away from home at 16-17 and lied and joined the army and got sent out to vietnam. and how it Fucked Him Up (well, it continued what fuckery his childhood started). i can't decide if he cries or not. van driessen holds his hand. later, when they're both sober, dave discreetly slips him some therapy pamphlets, but also offers to talk with him if he so chooses - which he does.
the second scenario is similar, but it's a few months since they've started dating. they're sitting in one of their backyards, it's late, late at night, and they're either sitting in cheap patio chairs or they're lying in the grass/dirt. the stars are out, it's pleasant and warm and calm. once again, after some chitchat, the walls come down and buzzcut opens up, though this time he's more angry than sad, not angry with david, but with everything he's gone through. van d listens and comforts him, and speaks about his own shitty childhood in turn. this becomes somewhat of a routine, getting plastered and blazed on a friday night and swapping stories of childhood trauma. it becomes their own, cheap version of therapy.
side note (i may also be stoned myself hehe): buzzcut straight up has not shared this shit with anyone in part because he's worried about burdening people with his trauma, and he initially doesn't want to "burden" van driessen because he loves him more than anyone else, but he comes to the realization that david is the only one he's okay with "burdening"; he's only willing to be vulnerable with van d and he knows dave will listen and and still be there at the end of the day. dave loves him and he loves dave and well there's just a lot of love going around okay! i'm high as fuck and i love love sooooo much peace and love on planet earth 🩷☮️✌️
THANK YOUUUUU 💖🩷💕 this is so long and most likely incomprehensible. i went insane

Post-Vietnam Klaus struggling with fireworks. Drug use, PTSD, fear, trauma, etc. Canon divergent because it feels like it would happen not long after he was in Vietnam, but there wasn't that opportunity in the canon timeline.
-
“What the hell are you doing?”
Klaus, busy with handfuls of dirt, doesn’t bother to answer. It should be obvious. How can it not be obvious?
“Klaus!?”
“Shh!” he hisses, not stopping. “Go away.”
As Ben crouches beside him, something curls tightly in Klaus’s stomach, alongside all the drugs he’s taken that aren’t enough—are never enough.
“I’m hiding,” he grits out, trying to dig deeper.
“In a flowerbed?”
He can hear the disdain in Ben’s voice, the judgement, and he hisses in frustration, that sensation, the frantic urgency turning his blood and organs to acid. He needs to dig harder, to go deeper, to get away before—
The first one is distant. The muted pop of it is still sharp, though, still too much. Klaus feels it echo in him, heightening his fear. It’s not just one he is afraid of, one he could handle. No, it’s all of them, the knowledge that soon the sky will be filled with light and explosions, the night shattering and fizzling with terrible things. His heart beats faster than it ought to, fear buzzing in his veins, adrenaline pushing him on, the drugs he’s swallowed not enough to give him the edge to beat the impending onslaught or to dull it down enough to endure.
Somewhere at his side, Ben is still there. Saying something. Klaus doesn’t hear. With the last, precious window of time he has, he tries to claw a safe space for himself from the earth.
He fails. He’s too late, too useless, and the night around him explodes, shattering the fragile thread he was holding onto. Exposed, he throws himself down, still trying to find shelter in the earth, to flatten himself against the dirt as he covers his ears and screws his eyes shut against the torment. He shakes with it, with the sound, each explosion everywhere around him, each shudder of his body, and wonders what would make it stop. It has to stop. It has to. It must.
He’s not numb enough. The realisation makes him groan, because how can he not be numb enough? He should have taken more. He should have done more. He should have escaped. He should never have been there, in the midst of it all, caught in hell, watching the only person he ever truly loved leave him forever. The next bullet might take him too, bring him to Dave, allow him to follow…
But the bullets don’t come. The explosions stay just out of reach, hovering above him oppressively but never setting him free, like a heavy blanket that smothers the sleeper without stealing the last of their breath. He wants the weight of it, the finality, but he fears it. He wants to run, he wants to scream.
Instead, he lies curled up in a ball, dirt and tears staining him as he sobs beneath the onslaught, the chemicals in his veins bringing him no closer and taking him no further, just twisting the world, leaving him gasping for relief.
And, next to him, still at first and then bowed beneath the weight of suffering he can do nothing about, Ben settles at Klaus’s side so that, at the very least, he’s not alone.

TUA S3 Thoughts
Tumblr media
I understand now why some of the reviews complained that the Sparrows were a little flat.
Hard to be a complex character when you’re DEAD.
Unless you’re Klaus.
That said, Marcus, Alphonso, Jayme, and Christopher got the worst treatment of the Sparrows. We didn’t get enough of them. My favorite Sparrow was Fei.
Fei was born with eyes and the birds pecked them out. The scarring was severe enough to cover the empty sockets and remaining muscle.
The Sparrows weren’t identified by ranking: they were identified by name. Which is so interesting. Reggie had the brellies numbered as soon as he bought them (evidence on Klaus’s receipt). So what happened? Also, it seems like the Sparrows actually decided who got what number. At the very least, their leader was negotiable and not assigned in infancy.
Loved Luther this season. And Five getting drunk and calling him a “monkey space virgin”? Mmwah.
Everyone’s saying fuck now, cool.
Can’t believe Lila jumped out of the tub and just fought with Five. Like, girl, you are WET, you are SLIPPERY, put some shoes on, at LEAST.
Sissy and Harlan’s experiences made me feel things.
As soon as Harlan told Viktor he could “feel” the presence of Viktor and others “like Viktor”, I knew he killed the mothers through this connection. However, I did NOT recognize that as the direct cause of the Kugelblitz until Allison more or less said it.
Speaking of Allison, I actually liked her character development. She was due for a breakdown. And seeing her use her powers in desperation, in anger, was really interesting.
Allison in the comics does not need to say, “I heard a rumor” for her powers to alter reality.
Klaus in the comics isn’t explicitly immortal, but he’s shot in the head at one point, sees God, and is told to go back to Earth. He also goes to a place between life and death he calls “The Void” and really likes it there.
So when Luther’s like, you gotta go back, and Klaus is all like, but this is MY place! I like it here! LOL.
Mothers of Anarchy was a Satanic biker gang that comics Klaus worked for in exchange for drugs.
The White Buffalo was also in the comics. Except it was a hint some dead guy gave Klaus to find money buried in the desert. And it was a toothpaste ad.
Oh and no Dave. Klaus seems satisfied that he prevented Dave’s death in Vietnam and moves on.
Luther’s concern that Viktor wasn’t feeling loved after his transition was so cute.
Would have liked to see more interaction between Allison and Diego re: race and Viktor and Klaus re: gender. Idk, Allison was pretty direct, but Diego was a lot more vague. And Viktor and Klaus never talked about Viktor’s transition. Or being the only obviously “out” members of the family, if that makes sense.
Kind of surprised to hear Diego speaking Spanish this season. The character had some Spanish lines in the first season, apparently, but David Casteñada thought it didn’t make sense, so it was omitted.
Also Stan was such a mouthy little dumbass I actually believed he was Diego’s son.
The Kugelblitz eating all of the earth except for this little island of land around the hotel was kinda wild.
The reveal that Hargreeves either killed or allowed a child Klaus to die and timed the reanimation was news to me. In the comics, Reggie had experimented on him, but that was more like a “I’m gonna strap you down in this Frankenstein looking shit and see if I can amplify your reach” kind of deal.
Still pissed they didn’t give him telekinesis. And that his powers weren’t more important to the plot.
Actually apprehensive about next season, if there is a next season. I love the characters, I love that the show isn’t a typical superhero show, but part of the draw is that the characters have these insane, unbelievable supernatural powers that make living ordinary lives nearly impossible. They make decisions no one else has to make, they accidentally hurt the people around them, or they’re terrified of their abilities. And if that’s taken away for too long, I might lose interest in wherever the story is going.

it is possibly an indicator of my experience with volunteering when tired that I've had the song "Luang Prabang" ricocheting endlessly through my head for a couple days now. (I still think there's no other way to guarantee that a thing you want done happens besides either paying for someone to do it or doing it yourself. It's just that sometimes you end up with nothing but air where your balls used to be, even if you are a fucking hero.)
It's a pretty baller song though as antiwar Vietnam protest songs go. Look, give it a listen. It's right here.
Stop me from trying to fight that Genius annotator about the line for "a wooden medal". It is not a reference to the military Purple Heart also sharing a name with the purpleheart wood; it's a snide reference to medal inflation leading up to the war combined with the notion that a wooden medal is the cheapest possible medal to create in bulk without value.
please stop me from fighting that guy, I have a strong belief that other nations have actually resorted to handing out wooden service medals when wars were going real bad and there were no resources left to drum up morale but I cannot for the life of me find specific historical examples
save me from my torment

since its klaus birthday, can you give us some headcanons of what dave would do for klaus’ birthday during vietnam please?
YOU BET I CAN so first of all i think klaus complains about sharing a birthday with his six siblings all the time but he only mentions the actual date once offhand in like, june. so klaus isn’t expecting much, he figures maybe he’ll remind dave day-of and they’ll do something fun up against a tree like they did for dave’s birthday. but dave committed that shit to memory like there was gonna be a pop quiz, and he slides klaus a little flower along with his coffee in the morning, and klaus is like, oh my god
and dave’s like okay i know you’re not technically exactly a year older than you were on 10/1/2018, time travel is complicated, but this is the day you’re gonna be born, so i think it’s still important, and i got you something. and klaus is like please yes, thinking he’s about to get smooched. and he does get the smooch, but i also love the idea of dave tracking down something practical that he noticed klaus would be able to use - maybe a new pair of boot laces that aren’t fraying at the ends, or a bandanna to keep klaus’s hair out of his forehead when he gets sweaty during the day. it’s not fancy, but it’s thoughtful
then it’s the potent combination of a) klaus misses his siblings, ofc he does, this was always something he shared with them even when they weren’t together, and b) klaus has probably never really celebrated his birthday in the traditional sense, and he’s definitely never had someone put time and thought into a gift for him just because they’re happy he got born. so there are maybe some tears. some emotions are expressed. dave doesn’t 100% believe that this is the best gift anyone’s ever gotten klaus in his life, but he’s glad he made klaus happy enough to say that
and then klaus is like oh my god all i got you for your birthday was head?? and dave is like well you’ll get another chance next year, also there’s a part two of my gift c’mere

who do you think said i love you first, klaus or dave? was klaus scared of falling in love?
Tumblr media
Oh, I definitely think Klaus said it first. He's effusively generous with his verbal and physical love language. On multiple occasions he is the one who bites the bullet with a shy or guarded loved one and says the nice thing first. I think Dave, based on what we saw in s2, was terrified of coming out of the closet and carried internalized homophobia right into Vietnam with him. Klaus definitely had to take the lead in the relationship, with drugs and booze in all those Vietnamese clubs and bars as a social lubricant that emboldened Dave. I don't think Dave had any queer romance before Klaus, and I think Klaus taught him pretty much everything about it, and was characteristically patient and nonjudgmental.
Klaus was still afraid to fall in love, certainly, because he was raised to believe that love is contingent on usefulness (thanks, Reginald, and, according to Viktor's book, thanks siblings, who found their own "unique ways to be cruel" as they got older). He has also believed all his life that he is, as alt-Reginald puts it in s3, "more trouble than he's worth," and has operated on that assumption all his life: never put all your eggs in one basket or you'll be abandoned, because you're just "sexy trash."
This is why, while I don't actually focus too much on the Klave relationship except in writing flashbacks, Dave is absolutely a seminal figure in Klaus's personal development. He is able to look past his own pain and desired numbness for the first time when someone shows him unconditional love. But I also don't believe first love is a final destination. For those who ship it hard, and like to write AU's in which Dave survived, they have my blessing: I can see the poetry, the romance, of it. I'm just hoping to see what's next for Klaus in the current scenario in which Dave is gone. I want Klaus to give himself permission to grieve and move on.

☝️ during his 30 years in the US Air Force. The following is in Buddy’s own words about his first flight over Hanoi with RSO’s David Jensen.
‘The first sorties I flew Dave Jensen and myself were scheduled as a double looper over north Vietnam.
‘A double loop means you fly over north Vietnam once, descend… refuel in Thailand airspace and then make a second pass on your return to Kadena. The route was generally, depart Kadena, fly subsonic to the first refill point ARCP approximately 200 nmi south of Kadena, get max load of fuel, cruise to a point south east of DaNang skirting unfriendly radar on the flight down, turning north flying into the Gulf of Tonkin, entering north Vietnam in the vicinity of Haiphong, crossing north Vietnam just took about 8 to 10 minutes. Deceleration into Thailand for a second air refueling climb back to altitude, climb back to altitude over north Vietnam on the western border continue west into the gulf of Tonkin and then again onto Kadena
Dave notified me the times when we were being looked at (Painted) by the Chinese and North Vietnam radar. And when a missile SA-2 was fired at us.
About the same time, I had a double engine flame out!
‘We were going to make an emergency landing at Takhli AB, Thailand.
‘During the glide to restart altitude, of course we lost cabin pressurization. So, our pressure suits inflate it which made the cockpit movement a little more difficult. I called the tanker that we would be bottoming out early. At about 35,000 feet I restarted both engines. The second approach to Takhli I landed. Since a portion of the airbase was also a CIA compound I taxied right into the CIA’s hanger. A recovery crew was sent down from Kadena the following day and have the SR ready for a return flight to Kadena within a couple of days. The head of the CIA compound told me as I was dressing ready to leave.
“If you don’t tell anyone you were here, I won’t either!” This is a typical spy response they did however give me great service!’

Constructive criticism: Watchmen (2009)
Ah yes, Watchmen. It began when comicbookwriter  Alan Moore proposed a story to DC, featuring characters that the company had acquired from Charlton comics. As his proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced him to create original characters instead. Together with artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins Moore created Watchmen, a deconstruction and satire of the superhero concept that reflected the anxieties of the time. It depicts an alternate history in which superheroes emerged in the 1940s and 1960s and their presence changed history so that the United States won the Vietnam war and the Watergate scandal was never exposed. Freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most former superheroes have retired or are working for the government. The plot of the graphic novel follows a group of superheroes coming out of retirement to solve the murder of a government-sponsored superhero. The grapic novel was critically and commercially successful. Nicholas Barber described it as "the moment comic books grew up". Moore opposed this idea, stating, "I tend to think that, no, comics hadn't grown up. There were a few titles that were more adult than people were used to. But the majority of comics titles were pretty much the same as they'd ever been. It wasn't comics growing up. I think it was more comics meeting the emotional age of the audience coming the other way." Several attempts have been made at turning it into a movie. Fox asked Alan Moore to write a screenplay based on his story, but he declined. The movie spent some time in development hell and at one point Terry Gilliam was attached to direct. Alan Moore himself called the comic "unfilmable", not just because there`s too much goin on in it to fit into a three hour running time, but because it does things that can only be done in the comicbook medium. One example is the chapter "Fearful Symmetry", which is drawn in a way so the first page mirrors the last (in terms of frame disposition), with the following pages mirroring each other before the center-spread is (broadly) symmetrical in layout. In 2010 Dreamworks animation created their own deconstruction of the superhero concept with Megamind. An animated movie telling the story of Megamind, a highly intelligent alien supervillain who regularily fights the superhero Metroman. Oh, and the year before that, Zack Snyder directed a movie adaptaion of Watchmen that was, at least visually, faithful to the graphic novel. I can`t deny that Snyder put a lot of work into this movie. It is very faithful to the story and even how it is visually told where he sometimes even uses the comicbookpanels as storyboards. But it feels like he didn`t quite get what Moore was trying to say. The movie feels like it`s telling an Alan Moore story through a Zack Snyder lens. Alan Moore`s mindset when writing the comic was "People who dress up in colourful costumes to fight crime would, if they existed in the real world, be a little messed up in the head and look rather silly." But Snyder`s mindset feels more like "The best kind of hero would be a dark, broken antihero who is reluctant to answer the call to adventure." It just feels like there is a dissonance going on here between the story and how it is told. There are also a few things in the movie that could have been introduced better, like they could have been subtly foreshadowed in the movie instead of just thrown in from nowhere. So, I think it`s time for me to give this film the old CC treatment. Now, if I could travel back in time and make some changes to this movie... What would I change?
Don`t do it I`d tell them not to make it. Leit be. Accept that not everything should get the old Hollywood treatment just because it`s popular and move on to something else.
Aand that`s how I would do it. Well... that was short.
Now, if you excuse me, I`m gonna go and invent a teleportation device to be used for something.
What, you guys are still here? All right. I`ll come up with someting better. How about...
Turn it into an animated series Instead of trying to fit the story of Watchmen into a feature length movie they could turn it into an animated series. That way there`s enough room for all the plotpoints that needs to be there. It could be closer visually to the comic with how the characters look, the colour palettes and everything. It would work better since the difference between comicbooks and animation are not as big as the difference between comicbooks and live-action.
Aand that`s how I would do it. Well... that was also pretty short. Oh well.
Now, if you excuse me, I`m gonna go and genetically engineer a giant squidmonster for some reason.
You guys still here? Fine. I`ll talk about the live-action movie. I want you to know that I don`t hate the movie. I admire the ambition and acknowledge that a lot of work has clearly been put into it. Snyder knows how to make his films look cool. Where he falls short is in the script department. He`s not interested in character driven stories but prefers plot driven ones, where the characters do whatever the plot wants them to whether it feels natural for them to do that or not. Now, with that said, let`s take a look at Watchmen.
Who watches the SPOILERS?
The fight scenes This is an example of the whole "Alan Moore story told through Zack Snyder lens" that I wrote earlier. The movie seems so fascinated by it`s own violence. The fightscenes are spectacular, well-choreographed, stylized, impressive and the heroes seem almost superhuman. For Snyder the fightscenes are COOL. But in Alan Moore`s Watchmen the fightscenes are not stylized or super choreographed and they are only there when absolutely necessary. The Comedian`s fight with his attacker in the beginning could have been messier, shorter and a little bit "Jason Bourn-ier". Rorschach`s fight with the police after he jumps out the window when they try to arrest him just feels unnecessary. I mean, Rorschach is a normal human, his body has limitations. It`s like Zack Snyder was afraid of letting his protagonists die or get caught without having a COOL fightscene. For this scene I would have stuck with how it happened in the grapic novel.
Ozymandias In the Graphic novel Ozymandias is a peak human athlete. In the movie the protagonists are, as I wrote earlier, almost superhuman. Since Ozymandias is supposed to be faster and stronger than the average human they had to make him superhuman in the movie. It stretches the believability and people not familiar with the graphic novel will probably wonder "How did this guy get superpowers?". The ordinary people should be human and Ozymandias should be an ordinary peak human athlete. Maybe it`s just me but I feel that that there is a subtle hint of villainy in the actors performance almost a little emotionally cold and calculating. I would have preferred if he had been more like Michael Keaton`s Bruce Wayne. Intelligent but not cold. The "With the right leadership" scene: I know, this is nitpicky, but I`d prefer if some other person than Ozy took the initiative to create and lead the Crimebusters. (Like Captain Metropolis or even Nite-Owl.) Ozy was just there to observe, to see if an idea like Crimebusters could work. Also, I prefer how his costume looked in the graphic novel. In the movie it looked more like a jab at the Batman suit from the Joel Schumacher movie than a costume made by a man trying to emulate the ancient pharaohs.
No explanation for Rorschach`s mask How did Walter Kovacs get that mask with the black inkblots that move around and create new patterns on his face? He doesn`t really strike me as some kind of genious inventor that could have created the material himself. If this is something that was explained in the extended version I wonder: Why couldn`t they fit it into the theatrical version? I understand that in movies you sometimes need to leave certain scenes on the cutting room floor because of the pace, runningtime or other reasons. But you shouldn`t take out scenes that help the movie make sense. How about: Rorschach tells his psychiatrist that when he was young he found work as an unskilled garment worker. One day they got a new fabric that fascinated him. It was made possible through technologies developed by Doctor Manhattan. Two viscous liquids, one black and one white, between two layers of latex, continually shifting in response to heat and pressure, forming symmetrical patterns like a Rorschach inkblot test. That`s the fabric that he used to create his mask. The movie doesn`t have to get more detailed than that.
Leonard Cohen`s Halleluja This is probably an unpopular opinion but... Leonard Cohen`s version of Halleluja is not the best version. They probably couldn`t use John Cale`s version since it came out 1991, or Jeff Buckley`s version which came out 1994 with the movie taking place in 1985. I would have used an instrumental cover with violins and a piano.
How Dan knows that Laurie doesn`t have cancer How does Dan know that Laurie doesn`t have cancer? It`s not like the symptoms of the decease show up over night. Was there some scenes in the film where she goes to check if she has it that ended up on the cutting room floor? How about this: When she and Dan are in the diner she could mention that after she heard about what happened to people close to Dr Manhattan she went to see if she also has it. And then later when she and Dan are watching TV she could open an envelope and sigh in relief because the tests came back negative.
Bubastis just showing up so late Bubastis`existence could have been forshadowed earlier in the movie. How about: Early when Dan meets Adrian to tell him about his visit from Rorschach he could pick up a photo that Adrian has on his desk. A photo of Bubastis. Adrian could say say something like: "Remarkable isn`t it? The leaps we`ve made in science over the years thanks to Dr Manhattan. Genetic engineering for example. A few years ago that was complete science-fiction." This introduces Bubastis early and explains to us how such a creature can exist in this world.
Several things in the end How we are introduced to Ozymandias` bullet catching ability It`s just mentioned by Rorschach in a voice-over when he drops off his journal. How about this: When Dan meets Adrian to tell him about his visit from Rorschach he could ask him "Is it true what they said about you back then? That you were so fast that you could catch a bullet?" Adrian: "Sorry to disappoint you, but that was just an exaggeration. It was really good for my reputation though." Ozymandias telling the gang that he`s trained himself to feel the pain of the people whose lives have been destroyed There`s a rule in film making: Show don`t tell. Instead of him telling us this: He can watch the TVs and see all the pain and destruction he`s caused and we can see this pain in his face. Nite-Owl witnessing Rorschach`s death Lose this scene. Or rather: lose Nite-Owl from this scene. The only thing that this scene needs is Jackie Earle Haley`s acting. Nite-Owl is just there to get upset so Zack Snyder can justify him beating up Ozy, which brings me to my next point. Nite-Owl beating up Ozymandias Don`t get me wrong, what Ozy did was wrong but beating him up then and there is pretty pointless. Lose it. Dan and Laurie says goodbye to Dr Manhattan and leaves him with Ozymandias. Ozy asks Dr Manhattan: "I did the right thing right? In the end?" Dr Manhattan: "Oh Adrian. Nothing ever ends." And then he teleports away, leaving Ozymandias alone with his own thoughts and regrets. Seymour and Rorschach`s journal In the movie it is hinted that Seymour definitely will pick up Rorschach`s journal from the crank files. I prefer the ending of the graphic novel since it is left more ambiguous.
On the fence: the S.Q.U.I.D Not crazy about the "Create reactors that imitate Dr Manhattan`s energy signature and then blow them up and make it seem like Dr Manhattan did it" plan. But I don`t hate it. Honestly, I barely even expected them to keep the part where they were too late to stop Ozy because he had already done it. The movie was already pretty long, so I`m willing to let it slide. But when I stop and think about it the idea of a genetically engineered monster could have worked without adding too much to the running time. The movie is (according to Wikipedia) 2 hours and 43 minutes long. The whole alien squid idea doesn`t have to be as long as it was in the graphic novel. There could be one scene in the first act that takes place in an Antarctic base where two scientists, who are on a break, talk about their "creation" (that`s the word they use for the creature, I want to keep it vague). Then later, when Ozy kills the scientists who worked for him, with poisoned champagne, these two could be among those scientist. It would probably add five to seven more minutes to the running time. But then again, Zack Snyder is not a stranger to making long movies. There`s also another thing about the alien squid invasion. The alien squid makes people realize that "this is a threat that we can beat if we unite and work together." The Dr Manhattan way may stop them from fighting, it may unite them, but first and foremost it makes them live in fear of the Damocles sword hanging over them, held by an old testament style god who watches their every move. The Squid is also like a Damocles sword, but can be beaten, through teamwork. Dr Manhattan can`t be beaten. The Dr Manhattan method is not bad per se, the squid is just slightly better.
Aand that`s how I would do it.
Yes, I know. Zack Snyder put a lot of effort into this movie. A lot of effort into making it look visually impressive and sticking pretty close to the source material of an insanely rich graphic novel that many said was unfilmable, and here I am complaining that it wasn`t more faithful. But, like I said earlier: it`s an Alan Moore story told through a Zack Snyder lens. The writer has one idea and the filmmaker has a different idea, so there is some dissonance.   Yes, Snyder put a lot of work into it, but Idon`t think he quite got the point of Watchmen.
Now, if you excuse me, I`m gonna do something that I should have done 35 minutes ago.
