Salvaged from the ruins of Beirut after 1982, Abu Ali's early film has only recently been made available. Shooting under extraordinary conditions, the director, who worked with Godard on his Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere), and founded the PLO's film division, covers conditions in Lebanon's refugee camps, the effects of Israeli bombardments, and the lives of guerrillas in training camps. They Do Not Exist is a stylistically unique work which demonstrates the intersection between the political and the aesthetic. Now recognised as a cornerstone in the development of Palestinian cinema, the film only received its Palestine premiere in 2003, when a group of Palestinian artists "smuggled" the director to a makeshift cinema in his hometown of Jerusalem (into which Israel bars his entry). Abu Ali, who saw his film for the first time in 20 years at this clandestine event noted: "We used to say 'Art for the Struggle', now it's 'Struggle for the Art'"

John Parker, other Gaza solidarity activists detained in Cairo, Egypt

Nov. 30: John Parker, a candidate for California’s 37th congressional district, is being detained by the Egyptian National Security Agency, along with other participants in the Global Conscience Convoy in Cairo, initiated by the Egyptian Syndicate of Journalists.  

He was taken into custody along with others when the group unfurled a banner that read “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free.” Parker and other detainees from Argentina, Australia and France have yet to be released.  

John Parker stated: “The Palestinian people desperately need food, fuel, water, medicine and aid.  The Rafah crossing must be opened so that people of the world can get needed supplies to the Palestinian people. Anything less contributes to Israel’s criminal genocide.”

Parker is a founding member of the Los Angeles based Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice and a reporter with Struggle-La Lucha.  He traveled to Cairo to be a part of the Global Conscience Convoy for Gaza. 

The Embassy of the United States is aware and informed of the detention. The Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice, Struggle-La Lucha and the Peoples Power Assembly are demanding the U.S. embassy seek Parker’s release and that Egyptian authorities release all four detainees immediately.

Contact the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Egyptian consulates in the U.S. to demand the release of all those detained.

Seeing fan discussions about Blue Eye Samurai and especially Mizu's identity is so annoying sometimes. So let me just talk about it real quick.

First off, I have to emphasise that different interpretations of the text are always important when discussing fiction. That's how the whole branch of literary studies came to be, and what literary criticism and analysis is all about: people would each have their own interpretation of what the text is saying, each person applying a different lens or theory through which to approach the text (ie. queer theory, feminist theory, reader response theory, postcolonial theory, etc) when analysing it. And while yes, you can just take everything the authors say as gospel, strictly doing so would leave little room for further analysis and subjective interpretation, and both of these are absolutely necessary when having any meaningful discussion about a piece of media.

With that being said, when discussing Blue Eye Samurai, and Mizu's character in particular, I always see people only ever interpret her through a queer lens. Because when discussing themes of identity, yes, a queer reading can definitely apply, and in Mizu's story, queer themes are definitely present. Mizu has to hide her body and do her best to pass in a cisheteronormative society; she presents as a man 99% of the time and is shown to be more comfortable in men's spaces (sword-fighting) than in female spaces (homemaking). Thus, there's nothing wrong with a queer reading at all. Hell, some queer theorists interpret Jo March from Little Women as transmasc and that's totally valid, because like all analyses, they are subjective and argumentative; you have the choice to agree with an interpretation or you can oppose it and form your own.

To that end, I know many are equally adamant that Mizu is strictly a woman, and that's also also a completely valid reading of the text, and aligns with the canon "Word of God", as the creators' intention was to make her a woman. And certainly, feminist themes in the show are undeniably present and greatly colour the narrative, and Episode 4 & 5 are the clearest demonstrations of this: Mizu's protectiveness of Madame Kaji and her girls, Mizu's trauma after killing Kinuyo, her line to Akemi about how little options women have in life, and the way her husband had scorned her for being more capable than him in battle.

I myself personally fall into the camp of Mizu leaning towards womanhood, so i tend to prefer to use she/her pronouns for her, though I don't think she's strictly a cis woman, so I do still interpret her under the non-binary umbrella. But that's besides my point.

My gripe here, and the thing that spurred me to write this post, is that rarely does this fandom even touch upon the more predominant themes of colonialism and postcolonial identities within the story. So it definitely irks me when people say that the show presenting Mizu being cishet is "boring." While it's completely fine to have your opinion and to want queer rep, a statement like that just feels dismissive of the rest of the representation that the show has to offer. And it's frustrating because I know why this is a prevalent sentiment; because fandom culture is usually very white, so of course a majority of the fandom places greater value on a queer narrative (that aligns only with Western ideas of queerness) over a postcolonial, non-Western narrative.

And that relates to how, I feel, people tend to forget, or perhaps just downplay, that the crux of Mizu's internal conflict and her struggle to survive is due to her being mixed-race.

Because while she can blend in rather seamlessly into male society by binding and dressing in men's clothing and lowering her voice and being the best goddamn swordsman there is, she cannot hide her blue eyes. Even with her glasses, you can still see the colour of her eyes from her side profile, and her glasses are constantly thrown off her face in battle. Her blue eyes are the central point to her marginalisation and Otherness within a hegemonic society. It's why everyone calls her ugly or a monster or a demon or deformed; just because she looks different. She is both white and Japanese but accepted in neither societies. Her deepest hatred of herself stems primarily from this hybridised and alienated identity. It's the whole reason why she's so intent on revenge and started learning the way of the sword in the first place; not to fit in better as a man, but to kill the white men who made her this way. These things are intrinsic to her character and to her arc.

Thus, to refuse to engage with these themes and dismiss the importance of how the representation of her racial Otherness speaks to themes of colonialism and racial oppression just feels tone-deaf to the show's message. Because even if Mizu is a cishet woman in canon, that doesn't make her story any less important, because while you as a white queer person living in the West may feel unrepresented, it is still giving a voice to the stories of people of colour, mixed-race folks, and the myriad of marginalised racial/ethnic/cultural groups in non-Western societies.

I've read and heard from many sources over the years that average people (at least in the west) tended to share beds more often in ye olde times because beds were expensive and also Lil' Ice Age temperatures were a thing to contend with.

And American college students wept, for there were no more causes for protest - LGBT rights were guaranteed forever, racial bias finally put to rest for good and with reparations. Reproductive rights received ironclad legislation, and native rights were finally achieved with a good mutual consensus. Global warming went the same way as the hole in the ozone - the US lead a striking, globally coordinated effort to finally mitigate and undo the damage - and all finally breathed fresh, clean air. The refugee crisis at the border was of course a thing of the past - either well integrated into society or sent back to homes finally made safe. Police violence and racial profiling, of course, were non-issues now - especially with inclusive, community-based and social policing replacing the heavy handed protection-and-serving-of-the-few of the past. Their own higher education was of course now fully funded by the state, and the concept of predatory 'student loans' seemed laughable. Medical care, transportation, shelter, nutrition - all became enshrined in law as human rights. Preventable deaths from hunger, from exposure, from mental illness - all went down into insignificance.

And so finally they looked out to the world for injustices to correct, but they were hard pressed to find them - Ukraine and Russia were at peace, finally, and reparations and assistance to rebuild in Ukraine were ongoing. Russia was, of course, free from tyranny, and undoing decades of stagnation, nepotism, internal racism, LGBTphobia -no, they had to look elsewhere. China, of course, had long freed the Uyghurs to live their lives with dignity, afforded numerous new freedoms to its citizens, and made a brave series of agreements with Taiwan and the US and Japan to end decades of suspicion and mutual jabs.

Romani anywhere in the EU were finally properly guaranteed their safety, alongside Irish Travelers, Canadian First Nations, Assyrians, the Bashkir (well, we already said Russia was doing better now!) -

And Sudan - well, the process of peace and reconciliation was tough, but inspirational. The hundreds of thousands dead, displaced - all wrongs were finally acknowledged and put to rights. Haiti is finally recovering from its own upheavals, Boko Haram, ISIS, the Taliban all agreed to disarm, vowed to compensate all they have wronged, to rebuild from the damage. Syria and Lebanon were no longer tormented by despots, and Iran with them - finally, again, the pride of Persian heritage, a place of dignity and comfort for all its people.

On and on the American college students looked for causes - some even went so far as to reignite pineapple on pizza, but society has of course moved on from such divides - so naturally, there could only be one remaining issue at hand. Clocking in at roughly 10 thousand kilometers away as the crow flies, depending on where you take off and land exactly, in an objectively tiny strip of land, there was one war they had to weigh in on. All other issues, near and far, greater in every possible metric, were finally fine - it was time to tell one country it shouldn't exist in favour of another, to harass people of that country - or even those basically unrelated to it, who were still somehow unclean for not working to dismantle that country. The American college students wept tears of joy, now, for the last and most important cause was at hand.

I have plans for her meeting Thor now, yes, I managed to work out a timeline section for it! Hilariously, despite the way Jane's abilities aren't technically like, punchy punchy I fight good type abilities, they're incredibly useful in a way that almost everyone can use, so there are a lot of folks that are gonna end up on her doorstep looking for help eventually, including Thor, although Thor's gonna be a bit more chill about it. It's going to be fun, though, seeing Jane interact with a giant golden retriever of a Viking god, although I feel like they have some stuff they'll be vibing on together, so it should also be a little, aww.

Just Jane in the background merrily wandering in and out of the wider MCU in between adventures with Matt and White Coat cause everyone's gonna lose their magical set of keys eventually.
