'Some five years after it was announced, Andrew Scott’s take on infamously charming fictional sociopath Tom Ripley is finally coming to our screens.
Based loosely on the 1955 novel by Patricia Highsmith – which was also adapted into an acclaimed 1999 film – it tells the story of a con artist who swindles his way into the high life by befriending wealthy socialite Dickie Greenleaf.
The show boasts a star-studded cast and a plot with plenty of hairpin twists and turns – as well as being shot in classy black and white. Here’s our breakdown of who’s playing whom...
Andrew Scott as Thomas "Tom" Ripley
Andrew Scott plays the talented Mr Ripley of the show’s title. A small-time confidence trickster who’s struggling to make ends meet in New York City, Ripley’s luck turns when he’s approached by businessman Herbert Greenleaf.
Greenleaf’s son Dickie has fled to Italy to avoid joining the family business and Ripley (who says he’s an acquaintance of Dickie) is charged with bringing him back. This doesn’t go entirely to plan, and Ripley soon yearns for Dickie’s lifestyle.
Scott himself is an established star on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Dublin in 1976, he balanced school with weekend acting classes, and appeared in his first time role – in the film Korea – at the age of 17. He moved to London five years later and from there worked his way through a variety of smaller roles.
His breakthrough into the mainstream was as the villainous, scenery-chewing Jim Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes in 2010. Ever since then he’s been a mainstay on our screens – as Fleabag’s Hot Priest, in Black Mirror, and most recently in romantic drama All Of Us Strangers opposite Paul Mescal.
Now, he’s in Ripley. "You don't play the opinions, the previous attitudes that people might have about Tom Ripley,” he’s said about the role. “I have to have the courage to create our own version and my own understanding of the character... It was a heavy part to play. I found it mentally and physically really hard.”
Johnny Flynn as Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf
The easy-going Dickie is the son of a shipping magnate and tremendously rich. He has also fled to Italy with the aim of avoiding family responsibilities – and Ripley is hired to bring him back home.
Flynn himself is both an actor and a singer-songwriter (he plays in a band, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit). Born in 1983 in Johannesburg, he won a music scholarship first to Pilgrims School in Winchester and then to Bedales. He was one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow in 2005, and broke through in Channel 4’s romcom series Love Sick as the main character, Dylan.
Since then, he’s appeared in films such as 2020’s Emma (in which he played Mr Knightley opposite Anya Taylor-Joy’s Emma) and as the young Nicholas Wynton in 2023 film One Life.
Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood
Marge is Dickie’s friend, who becomes romantically involved with him as their Italian holiday progresses. When Ripley appears on the scene, she quickly becomes suspicious of him.
Fanning has been acting since the age of five. Born in Georgia to a tennis player and a baseball player, she started off in small plays before appearing in NBC medical drama ER as a car accident victim with leukaemia. Two years later, she became the youngest ever person to be nominated for a SAG Award for her work in 2001 film I Am Sam.
Over the years, she’s appeared in films including The Secret Life of Bees, War of the Worlds and even in the Twilight saga as vampire Jane.
Eliot Sumner as Eddie Miles
Eddie is Dickie’s close friend, who arrives in Italy shortly after Ripley does and stays at his Italian villa. The pair rapidly develop a strong disliking of each other.
Sumner is an English songwriter and actor. Born in Italy in 1990, they are the child of Sting and Trudie Styler and grew up on the family’s estate near Stonehenge. The family gave Sumner their first guitar at four or five, and they wrote their first song at 13, before signing a record deal with Island Records at the age of 17.
Their first band, I Blame Coco, released their debut album in 2010 (Coco was Sumner’s nickname growing up). Since then, they’ve also ventured into acting, most recently appearing in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen.
Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini
Not much is known about Lombardi’s character, but given his title, we can assume he’s part of the Italian police squad who set about investigating Ripley’s actions as the drama unfolds. No spoilers here, but things are set to get messy.
Lombardi himself is an Italian acting legend. Born in 1973, he decided to become an actor after reading The Count of Monte Cristo aged 14. Since then, he’s appeared in 2016 show The Young Pope with Jude Law, 2020’s The New Pope opposite John Malkovich and Italian crime series Monterossi.
Francesca Romana Bergamo as Ermelinda
Ermelinda is Dickie Greenleaf’s housekeeper and cook at his private home. In the book, this is in Mongibello (a made up town on the coast); the TV series hints at Rome.
Neapolitan actress Francesca Bergamo has, up until now, mainly appeared in Italian language shows. Educated at the San Carlo di Napoli theatre, her main roles have included films such as Il ricordo di una lacrima (2015), Ivan e il suo strano tempo (2013) and Il ballo dei pomodori (2016).
John Malkovich as TBC
What role will the multi-talented John Malkovich be playing? So far, it has been kept under wraps, but the addition of Malkovich – who himself has played Ripley in 2002’s Ripley’s Game – is sure to spice up the show. He almost requires no introduction, but we’ll give him one anyway: born in Illinois in 1953, he made his start in 1976 when he joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago.
From there, he went on to appear in films such as Empire of the Sun (1987), Of Mice and Men (1992), Being John Malkovich (1999) and even the first Johnny English film in 2003. He’s dabbled in fashion (he set up his own fashion company, Mrs Mudd, in 2002) and has been an artistic muse (in 2014, photographer Sandro Muller released an exhibition of 35 iconic portraits of the actor).
Margherita Buy as TBC
Italian actress Margherita Buy has a career spanning decades. A native of Rome, she was born in 1962 and broke through in Duccio Tessari's Una grande storia d'amore (1986). She’s gone on to appear in numerous Italian-language films and TV shows – and is best known for Mia madre (2015), The Ignorant Fairies (2001) and Days and Clouds (2007).
Ripley airs on Netflix from April 4'

Welcome to the quaint Fantasy City of Southam, nestled amidst the sprawling forests and rolling hills of the countryside. Though now little more than a large hunting village, Southam was once a thriving settlement that fell into ruin decades ago due to a devastating earthquake. Despite its diminished stature, Southam retains a unique charm and a rich history that echoes through its cobblestone streets and timeworn buildings.
History:
Southam's origins can be traced back to ancient times when it served as a bustling trading post and agricultural center. However, a catastrophic earthquake ravaged the city, leaving much of it in ruins. Over time, Southam was rebuilt as a humble hunting village, its former grandeur a distant memory.
Arts:
Despite its modest size, Southam boasts a vibrant artistic community, with local artisans crafting intricate wood carvings, tapestries, and pottery inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The city's residents also take pride in their traditional folk music and dances, keeping ancient customs alive through spirited performances.
Famous People:
Among Southam's notable figures is Alaric Greenleaf, a renowned hunter and tracker revered for his unparalleled skills in navigating the dense forests that surround the village. Another beloved resident is Elara Songbird, a gifted singer whose melodic voice captivates audiences at the local tavern.
Castle:
At the heart of Southam stands the sturdy Stonekeep Castle, a relic of the city's former glory. Though weathered by time and neglect, the castle's imposing walls and towering towers still stand as a symbol of resilience. Stonekeep Castle serves as a gathering place for the village council and a refuge during times of need.
Food:
The cuisine of Southam is hearty and rustic, reflecting the village's reliance on the bounties of the forest. Game meats such as venison, rabbit, and wild boar are staples of the local diet, often seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices for a burst of flavor. Foraged mushrooms, berries, and nuts complement these savory dishes, providing a taste of the wilderness.
Major Events:
Southam's annual Harvest Festival is a highlight of the village calendar, celebrating the bounty of the land and the community's resilience in the face of adversity. The festival features feasting, music, and traditional games, drawing visitors from neighboring villages to join in the festivities.
Major Exports and Imports:
Southam exports prized furs, cured meats, and handcrafted goods to nearby towns and cities, trading them for essential supplies such as grains, textiles, and tools. The village also serves as a gateway to the wilderness, offering guided hunting expeditions and outdoor adventures to travelers seeking to explore the untamed wilderness.
Beautiful Sights:
A particular structure that catches the eye in Southam is the Whispering Grove, a tranquil clearing nestled within the forest on the outskirts of the village. Here, ancient stone pillars stand sentinel among towering trees, their weathered surfaces adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Southam's storied past. Legend has it that the Whispering Grove holds mystical powers, granting wisdom and guidance to those who seek solace within its hallowed grounds.
Leader of Southam - Lady Elara Southam:
Lady Elara Southam, a descendant of the village's founding family, inherited leadership of Southam following the untimely death of her father. Raised amidst the rugged beauty of the wilderness, Elara possesses a deep connection to the land and its people. Known for her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering determination, Lady Elara has earned the respect and admiration of the villagers through her tireless efforts to rebuild and revitalize Southam in the wake of the earthquake. Her leadership is characterized by a commitment to preserving Southam's traditions while embracing new opportunities for growth and prosperity.

Welcome to the transformed city of Muggalgrur, once the peaceful Southam, now reshaped into an Orcish stronghold following the invasion five years ago. The vibrant tapestry of Southam's cultural heritage and natural beauty has been replaced by the harsh stamp of Orcish dominance.
City Transformation:
Muggalgrur is little more than a shadow of its former self, now an Orcish inverse of the once-thriving Southam. The elegant architecture and quaint charm have been replaced with crude, imposing structures adorned with Orcish symbols and banners. The streets that once bustled with life are now eerily quiet, save for the occasional grunt or snarl of passing Orc patrols.
Orcish Rule:
Under the iron fist of Warchief Bloodlick, Muggalgrur is governed with ruthless efficiency. The city has become a hub of Orcish activity, with thralls toiling under the watchful eyes of their Orcish overlords. Former citizens of Southam have been reduced to servitude, forced into labor and subjected to the harsh rule of their new masters.
Hunting Lodge:
Castle Stonekeep, once a symbol of Southam's resilience, has been torn down and replaced with an opulent Orcish hunting lodge. The lodge serves as Warchief Bloodlick's residence, boasting lavish furnishings and adorned with trophies of Orcish conquests. From its imposing halls, Bloodlick oversees the city's operations with a keen eye and an iron will.
Leader of Muggalgrur - Warchief Bloodlick:
Warchief Bloodlick, a short but powerful Orc known for his mastery of horseback riding, rules Muggalgrur with an iron fist. He earned his title through bloodshed and cunning, rising through the ranks of the Orcish horde to claim leadership of the city. Bloodlick's leadership is characterized by brutality and ruthlessness, with dissenters swiftly dealt with and obedience demanded without question.
Alaric Greenleaf and Elara Songbird:
Alaric Greenleaf, once a revered hunter of Southam, met his demise defending the city against the Orcish invaders. His corpse now hangs from a cage at the city entrance, a grim reminder of the price of resistance. Elara Songbird, once a beloved singer, has been reduced to a thrall in service to Warchief Bloodlick. Forced to sing every night as the Orcs dine in their opulent lodge, her melodic voice now serves as a haunting echo of Muggalgrur's tragic transformation.
Exports and Imports:
Muggalgrur exports weapons, armor, and enslaved thralls to neighboring Orcish strongholds, fueling the war machine of the Orcish horde. The city imports rare materials, precious gems, and luxury goods to satisfy the extravagant tastes of its ruling class.
Orcish Sights:
A particular sight in Muggalgrur is the Sacrificial Altar of MOG, located within the once-tranquil Whispering Grove. Here, Orc Priestesses perform gruesome rituals during the Harvest Festival, sacrificing a Snaga virgin to appease the bloodthirsty deity. The grove, once a place of serenity and reflection, now echoes with the chilling chants of Orcish worshipers and the cries of sacrificial victims.
Harvest Festival:
The Harvest Festival has been transformed into a celebration of Orcish farming, where thralls are forced to dig up Orcroot bulbs, Thistlepods, Sweetleaf, and Zaza, Orc crops that are only palatable to their Orcish masters. The festival is a grim reminder of the thralls' servitude and the Orcs' complete domination over the land and its resources.
Muggalgrur stands as a stark reminder of the brutality of Orcish conquest, its once-proud heritage twisted into a grotesque mockery of its former self. Under the oppressive rule of Warchief Bloodlick, the city's inhabitants suffer in silence, their spirits broken and their hopes for freedom extinguished in the shadow of Orcish tyranny.

Patti Labelle: Filmography
With Commentary by Nesha
IMDB Filmography
Patti made a lot of hits in the era of music videos, so this isn’t for those, since she’s a singer by trade and that list would be a lot for me. I loved her music in the 80s/90s. But, this is for some of the roles that I know of. I didn’t include her TV movies either, but they exist.
A Soldier’s Story, 1984: Big Mary
Tumblr media
A Different World, 1990 - 1993: Adele Wayne  Yes. If you didn’t know, Patti was a Black TV mama in the 90s of a main character on one of the Blackest and best shows ever,
Tumblr media
Out All Night, 1992-1993: Chelsea Paige... THIS SHOW WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHORT LIVED SHOWS. Patti Labelle was the owner of this bar/nightclub and I believe a former singer, or some type of famous lady who now out this night spot. This was the first thing that I can remember seeing both Vivica and Duane in (I think I’d already seen Morris in Boyz N The Hood), but one or both of them worked at the spot and Vivica was Chelsie’s fun loving daughter, who I very vividly remember proclaiming, “Excuse for a partay!” God, I loved this show. And that was when folk used to put they foot in a theme song and get this... PATTI SUNG THE THEME SONG. Ugh. We had some gems and they would not let us be great. This show shoulda had at least 3 seasons. AT LEAST.
Tumblr media
Idlewild, 2006: The Real Angel Davenport
Tumblr media
American Horror Story: Freakshow, 2017: Dora Brown I. Don’t. Know. How. Ryan Murphy projects be getting all these dope ass Black women to come through there, but despite my relationship with his shit, Patti was up in there and it is a popular franchise, so I’m mentioning it.
Tumblr media
Daytime Divas, 2017:
Gloria Tomas ANOTHER show I loved that was great and deserved more time. Vanessa L. Williams having her own daytime panel and them guest starring hella folk on their amidst drama and hilarity? We can’t have nice things.
Greenleaf, 2018: Maxine Patterson - I can’t lie to you, I don’t watch this show. I don’t think I got passed the pilot, and I feel like I went back a few times to try, but I couldn’t get into it. I had enough church drama in my many years in church, I guess. But, I do know that it’s a Black show and they have some talent up on there.
Tumblr media
Star, 2019: Christine Brown - My last comments... goes double, maybe triple for this show. But, shoutout to the cast and guests. I wasn’t finna sit through no more of Lee Daniels’ terrorism at the time it came out and don’t know if I’ll ever circle back to it.

Ultimate Playlist: Women’s Names, F-J
Now we run into a few letters of the alphabet that aren’t quite as popular for women’s names. One F, two G’s, one H, and one I.
Miss Fritchie by Eddie From Ohio Based on a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, this song tells the story of Barbara Fritchie, who waved her Union flag as Stonewall Jackson marched the Confederate army into Frederick, Maryland.
The Simple Joys of Maidenhood by Lerner & Loewe, sung by Julie Andrews From the musical Camelot, this song finds Guenevere singing to St. Genevieve about her hesitancy to marry and become queen.
Ginger Faye by Eddie From Ohio “This here’s the story ’bout Ginger Faye,” a young woman from the University of Virginia, recently married, who arrives in Queensland, Australia, only to be pulled off the dock and drowned by a crocodile.
Heather Graham by Da Vinci’s Notebook This comedic, a cappella group sings a song about having a crush on the popular, American actress.
Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls The song eclipsed the movie it was written for, City of Angels, which is about an angel who is willing to give up his immortality to be with the woman he falls in love with.
Jane by Jefferson Starship A hard rocking love song about a woman playing hard-to-get.
Jane by Barenaked Ladies Co-written with Stephen Duffy, the song was inspired by a grocery store clerk Duffy was attracted to. In the song, after an initial relationship, Jane decides they should just stay friends.
Salvation Jane by INXS Salvation Jane is the name of an Australian flower, and the lyrics of the song seem to be about humanity’s impact on nature, but there’s definitely some personification going on.
Janey Don’t You Lose Heart by Bruce Springsteen Janey has apparently been having a hard time of it. Bruce’s compassion is going to hold her up.
Janie’s Got A Gun by Aerosmith This Janie is in worse shape than the previous one. Tired of being sexually abused by her father, she shoots him in the head. The song was inspired by two news articles Steven Tyler read in Time and Newsweek.
Little Jeannie by Elton John The lyrics of this love song were written by Gary Osborne about a specific person with a different name he never revealed.
8675309 / Jenny by Tommy Tutone This song amounts to a joke, the punchline (found in the bridge) being that the singer found Jenny’s phone number written on the wall of a bathroom stall. Unfortunately, as the song hit #4 on the charts in the US back in 1981, one unlucky woman received 22,000 phone calls.
Jelly Man Kelly by James Taylor Yes, the song is titled after a boy, but in the second verse, we find “the part about Jenny Mahenny. She’s the fireman’s daughter.” James performed the song on Sesame Street episode 1,800 in 1980.
Jolene by Dolly Parton Named by Rolling Stone as one of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” this crossover country hit was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with Dolly’s husband while they were newly married.
Why Judy Why by Billy Joel Named after Billy’s sister, whom he often turned to for support growing up, the song is about a man going through a breakup and turning to his friend Judy for comfort.
Justice and Independence ’85 by John Cougar Mellencamp A political allegory, the song tells the tale of a man born on the 4th of July named Independence Day who married a girl named Justice. After giving birth to a son called “the Nation,” she leaves.

“We have been here for an hour,” Thranduil says, “and the first and only person who pulls over to assist us is a mechanic?” He was hoping that elaborating on the improbability of it all would cause the hallucination to give up the ghost. “Yep,” says the hallucination again. “Funny how that works, isn’t it? Tell me about the car.” Thranduil tells him about the car, working under the assumption that it will not make the situation worse to do so. Somewhere in the back of his mind, hope is beginning to reassert itself, hope that this hallucination is not a hallucination after all. 'ROME, ITALY: Calling all crime drama devotees! Prepare for a thrilling trip back to the 1960s with Netflix's brand-new series, 'Ripley'.
Based on Patricia Highsmith's legendary novel, 'The Talented Mr. Ripley', this series isn't your average 'whodunit'. This fresh take boasts a powerhouse team: Academy Award-nominated director Steven Zaillian and the captivating Andrew Scott, best known for his chilling performance in 'Sherlock'.
The story centers on Tom Ripley, a cunning con artist who gets sucked into a dangerous game of deceit and murder after being hired by a wealthy man to convince his wayward son to return home from Italy.
Filmed in a timeless black and white style, 'Ripley' promises to be an immersive experience, perfectly capturing the suspenseful atmosphere Highsmith's novels are renowned for.
Curious about the cast and how this adaptation breathes new life into the classic story? Let's dive deeper and discover what makes 'Ripley' a must-watch!
Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley
The enigmatic Tom Ripley is both protagonist and antagonist in 'Ripley'. A young hustler yearning for a better life, Tom cons his way into the life of Dickie Greenleaf.
BAFTA winner Andrew Scott portrays Ripley's many personas, from petty criminal to charming confidante, all while harboring a dangerous obsession.
Scott is best known for assuming the role of Jim Moriarty in 'Sherlock' and the captivating 'hot priest' in 'Fleabag'.
Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf
Dickie Greenleaf, Tom's target, is a wealthy playboy enjoying a carefree life in Italy.
Unlike the spoiled portrayal in previous adaptations, this Dickie possesses a sweet naivete beneath his confident exterior. British actor and musician Johnny Flynn brings Dickie to life.
He's known for his roles in 'Lovesick' and 'Stardust'.
Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood
Marge Sherwood is Dickie's girlfriend with a sharp intuition. Unlike others, she sees through Tom's facade and becomes suspicious of his motives.
Dakota Fanning, who rose to fame as a child actress in 'I Am Sam' and 'War of the Worlds', portrays the intelligent and wary Marge.
Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles
A stark contrast to the obnoxious portrayal in the 1999 film, Freddie Miles in 'Ripley' is a sophisticated friend of Dickie.
Freddie becomes suspicious of Tom from the outset. English actor and singer Eliot Sumner takes on this role, having previously appeared in Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen'.
How to stream ‘Ripley’?
'Ripley' will be available to stream on Netflix from Thursday, April 4...'

But this man must be a hallucination, because if he is not, he looks very like a miracle.

‘Twain at Play’ Readings
I’d like to look at Twain’s “Whittier Birthday Speech.”  Thought the framing of Twain against Boston Brahmin brought up in class was really interesting and something I had not considered yet.  I find it interesting because the comparison all at once contrasts Twain by class, culture, and location.  Twain’s lifetime is basically the same period that the Boston elite lose cultural dominance and centrality in American culture to ‘young money’ in New York—a cultural elite that more resembles what we might recognize in today’s American elite.  And Twain participates in that shift away from the Boston Brahmin both culturally and literal location.
Twain is born in the south, moves to California, then New York.  Whether a Southerner, a Californian, or a New Yorker, Twain is decidedly not a Bostonian socialite, and Boston Brahmin would have marked him as such.  Twain’s social circle, especially through marriage to Olivia Langdon, included many critics of the established Northern upperclass, such as William Dean Howells and Harriet Beecher Stowe.  And Twain also shared in the culture of wild invention and investment that eventually symbolized New York, idealizing the complicated inventions and techno-marvels of the time.
With this in mind, I find it a convincing reading that Twain is at least intentionally contrasting himself from the Boston Brahmin.  He sets his story “Californiawards” with the characters himself, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Windell Holmes, and John Greenleaf Whittier.  All these writers could be considered part of the Boston cultural centrality of the time, as all were educated in and from Massachusetts if not Boston itself.  And Twain writes their dialogue in ‘improper’ English with literary quotes sandwiched between, the quotes reading stuffy or disconnected in a manner that pokes fun at their literary forms.
Then, toward the end in response to the miner bemoaning the “littery atmosphere,” Twain jokes these characters “were not the gracious singers to whom we and the world pay loving reverence and homage; these were imposters.”  This joke is actually not fully explained and can be interpreted a few ways.  One is just straightforwardly that these characters were imposters, fakes pretending to be the authors, quoting them tastelessly.  In this reading the imposters, even though not the actual writers, are still satirizing some of the Bostonian culture, generating a sense of artifice artifice by quoting the writers.  One can read either the miner or the “littery atmosphere” as equally out of place here.  And with the miner supposedly being Wittier, yet still as false-seeming as the imposters, we can question his place as well.  Which leads to an alternate reading of the “imposters” being the real authors themselves, their “littery atmosphere” the fake.
Whether Twain actually intends that reading, it seems he’s definitely at least aware of some of this dynamic and unlike the other characters, no matter how the story is read, Twain is an outsider.  In the decades following, New York would grow eventually overtaking Boston as the national cultural and wealth center.  So I find this speech fun to read as a small moment preceding that transition, Twain touching on what would eventually become a real shift.
