I’m prolly gonna get Gwanon hate but fuck it. Gwen was not a good friend to Courtney, and her actions were inexcusable. It doesn’t matter that she (half assed) tried to apologize. It’s a shame what the writers did to her character, because she went from being a supportive, if a bit reclusive, character, to a hypocritical “victim”. Take what she said after kissing Duncan for Instance. She outright SAYS “I kissed Courtney’s boyfriend I’m a terrible person!”. She ADMITS that she fucked up. But in All STars (what a shit season) she’s like “I DiD NOthInG WrONG”. I mean, sure, we could blame it on crappy and inconsistent writing (both are true), but the truth is, that’s just a big flaw of hers. She is so used to being in the right, that she doesn’t see when shes in the wrong.

You know, it sure is interesting how Arthur never throws anything harder than a pillow or a generic insult at Merlin when Gwen is in the room. As far as I can remember, she’s never seen her best friend being actually struck or threatened by her romantic interest — almost as if Arthur/the writers are aware that abuse isn’t cute and Gwen would be measurably less interested in a man who treated her best friend like that 🤔

How do people think Pavitr is anything but a straight guy.Literally what gay/bi dude would see his friends who're a boy and a girl interacting and immediately start talking about het romance tropes yet not speak a single word on his other friend with blatant weird gender shit going on being five seconds from calling the boy* in question babygirl like come ON

Across The Spiderverse is a dream come true for me as someone who's had the Riordanverse as a special interest for a bit over a fucking decade now.The fem mc is a blonde white girl who's super smart but she has tons of nice moments to balance out her asshole tendencies to the point that she has an actual consitant personality instead of just mashed up 'pick me gf' tropes? The villain who hurts kids is potrayed as a bad person for it and there's no 'i had a bad life uwu' forced redemption for him?The poc are treated with just as much care and respect as the white characters AND they all have realistic features for their heritage???The lgbt rep in the cast is beautifully written rather stereotyping and torture p*rn???????Literally made for me specifically

Merlin killing a fellow magic user in defense of Gaius (and the monarchy) and Merlin using his first healing magic incantation on Uther Pendragon in s1 ep6 really set the tone on how he was gonna handle his destiny tbh.

spider-teens ★ D&D HEADCANONS
— hobie, gwen, miles, pavitr (+ peter b & mayday!)
Tumblr media
warnings: d&d jargon (there's definitions at the end if you're curious), shenanigans, miles being a NERDDD, a lil shorter than usual
a/n: how id imagine these lot playing d&d!!! ive only played / ran 5e so forgive me veteran players 😭 again feel free to add / disagree w me it's all in good fun
If MILES doesn't run the game, he plays a warlock for sure. Not because it fits him personality wise but because he wants to be a magic user but also not be held back by it. My man is thinking STRATEGY and takes every opportunity to geek out about the specifics of his abilities. He also definitely has a ridiculously fleshed-out backstory he's kind of too embarrassed to tell anyone about.
Either warlock or the nerd multi-classes and it confuses the hell out of EVERYONE... I feel like he tries a lot of the classes though so warlock is kind of a starting point when he's playing with his spider friends (he defo played fighter or sorcerer in the past)
Miles is the one who gets everyone together though (and jumps through universes to make sure everyone's on time 😭 he will NOT tolerate scheduling issues)
Peter B runs a lot of their games except he used to play 3e or Pathfinder back in the day (nerd...) so Miles is just like... gritting his teeth a little whenever Peter misses a little detail or a skill check. He probably used to play in high school / college I mean come on...
Speaking of Peter B OF COURSE he lets Mayday roll the dice. The entire party could depend on that roll and she's rolling it and everyone is TENSE (And he tries not to let her eat the dice... Tries.)
HOBIE plays a barbarian or rogue. He'd play a barbarian just for the hell of it (sounds cool) and would most definitely carry everyone by total accident because he's like... the only one alive.
Rogue also for the hell of it cause stealing is rebellious and that 😭 Though if he does play a rogue his character becomes one of the most unintentionally complex characters in the game.
Hobie would figure out the entire plot of the adventure completely by accident and Peter just laughs awkwardly and goes "You'll just have to find out next session!" and maybe dies inside (but it's not like he prepares for his sessions anyway 💀)
Absolutely crits at the most ridiculous times and derails the whole campaign because he decided to interrogate a minor political figure and now they're destabilising the region's government instead of fighting dragons
And he accidentally becomes the leader of like the whole village and maybe starts a revolution and Peter is sat there lips pressed together hands pressed together elbows on table like "...I guess that happens then."
Might cheat a little bit. Just a little. Not enough to ruin the campaign but enough to have Peter sweating 💀 A lil strand of web under his dice hurt nobody right? (Those goblins are DEAD dead)
Miles is gob-smacked and definitely a little jealous of him 😭
PAVITR originally wants to play a fighter because that sounds... cool as hell BUT when Miles explains the bard class to him he takes it and runs
I'd say Pavitr is relatively new to the game as are Hobie and Gwen but he hones in on the roleplay (not as seriously as Miles but definitely participates)
Probably leads the group and goes head-first into danger (Miles is literally pissing himself) and his character probably knows loads of languages cause he just conveniently picked a race with very useful languages for the adventure (as per Miles' suggestion)
But he goes out-of-character more than once to go "WTF????" when he doesn't manage to rizz up an NPC and they're have to roll for initiative (attempts to be a pacifist)
The goat when it comes to fights though he plays such a good supporting character and if he were to die everyone would totally be finished 😭🙏
GWEN plays either a monk or a wizard. I feel like she doesn't particularly mind but she plays wizard for a little bit before realising that she doesn't really like the magic stuff? Goes for monk and it's a lot simpler and more fun
More of an observer but is helpful when it comes to investigating areas and carries like EVERY item possible: potions, magical items, 20 rocks for some reason. Bag of holding girlie (like how she holds that trauma she has in real li—)
Has THE coolest weapons. Because her character can't rely on magic she's constantly upgrading or getting new weapons and her unique monk abilities come in handy again when exploring!!!
Totally makes fun of Miles (endearingly!) And maybe points out a plot hole in his backstory and he wants to curl up into a ball and disappear for a good minute (he rethinks his entire character for 2 nights straight)
Has an NPC she would protect with her LIFE. Barmaid at the inn? Anything for you sweetums 😁😁😁 *trips over and dies*
That's all given if they have an actually functional game... It takes them probably about like a year to finish a one-shot adventure
But it is SO worth the memories (albeit very chaotic memories.) Even when they're arguing over a roll (usually Hobie's) or someone's character has literally died they make it work through the power of friendship...! And a broken table
These guys are crazy I love them
"Embrace the chaos is the mood for tonight's session. AKA you guys are screwed... Roll initiative."
"What the hell?!"
"Don't swear in front of the kid!"
Jargon!
Campaign: A world containing one set of characters where different adventures take place
Dungeon Master / DM: The person who creates the story and runs the game
Skill check: Rolling a die to see if you've passed or failed a certain skill when performing an action (for example charisma when trying to persuade somebody)
Crit: Critical hit. When you roll a 20 on a 20-sided die. You deal loads of damage in a fight basically.
NPC: Non-playable character. Any characters who aren't the players within the universe. Controlled by the DM.
Initiative: The roll you have to make before a fight to decide the order of turns. "Roll initiative" means "you guys are in a fight now!!!! lmao!!!!"
🕸️🕷️💫
thank you for reading my insane midnight rant LMAOOO
i haven't played d&d in like 2 years so apologies if anything is diabolically wrong here 💀would love to hear your thoughts!

Sunset light bathes the battered desks and vinyl floors of the art studio, discussions of weekend plans and new movies hums lowly through the room; Thursday night classes had that effect on everyone, but especially those with no classes on Friday.
Those like Peter Parker - who’d only made the Friday Class Mistake once so far in his college career. The young college student, and part time masked vigilante, slides into an empty plastic chair just as the tutor enters the room.
“Portraits!” The tutor, a vibrant bespectacled man named Robin, reminds everyone of the plan for the class as he takes attendance in his head. There were only about sixteen people in this time slot so it’s an easy task.
“Your assignment was to find some portraiture you really connected with, take it apart, make it your own, I don’t need to remind you guys,” he waves a hand as a shrug. “Let’s jump in so we can all get on with our weekend. Who wants to go first for crits?”
The girl sitting next to Peter, an eager beaver named Marie, puts her hand up to have her work picked apart. And so it begins.
Person after person shares their screen to the projector and explains why they chose their setting, the subject, the colouring, why it was edited the way it was. Peter ends up being last, and he’s feeling pretty good about the photos he’d taken of you.
He’d had to bribe you, of course. Because you hated being in front of a camera but not more than you loved a burger from that place just outside of town - the place near a secret patch of wildflowers that Peter wanted to capture you in.
He’d been careful to make sure the flowers treated carefully and with respect. Then, he’d done the same with his camera-shy best friend.
You’d needed a lot more reassurance than the flowers had.
“I’m doing a terrible job.”
“No, you’re doing great,” Peter encouraged as he peaked out from behind the lens. “Tilt your head a little to the left, just a- perfect.” He snapped a few more shots before seeing you subtly squirm and draw in an uncomfortable breath. He lowered the camera and caught you in a gentle, level stare. “Hey. Just look at me.”
“You’re not the problem,” you argued and crossed your arms over yourself, “It’s that thing in your hand.”
He grinned at you. “Don’t look at the thing in my hand.” He saw you take another shaky breath in before you met his eye with an intense vulnerability.
“Yeah,” his smile softened, he pointed and clicked as he kept your focus on him. “Just keep looking at me…”
The photos turned out great, and it’s his turn to have his work critiqued.
He clicks a few keys, types in the screen-sharing code, and your face fills the large screen at the front of the room.
It’s an objectively beautiful photo of you. The colours of the earth and the flowers bring out that sparkle in your eye that Peter’s come to know as the starlight that appears when you’re laughing, or thinking of something cheeky to say in response, when you’re truly at ease and happy where you are. Your expression says peace. The flowers around you bring out something wild in your soft smile. Your stare is just above the lens, fixed on Peter.
Before he can explain why he chose this field, why he chose his best friend, Robin makes a noise of approval and turns to the class.
“Okay guys, see now this is the advantage of doing portraits with a romantic partner- with someone you have a real connection with. See that depth in the subject’s eyes, and see where the eyes are fixed? On the photographer, right? Now, that’s something that can’t be faked.”
The sun had set. The room has darkened. But Peter is caught too off-guard to worry if anyone can see the way his cheeks were burning, or the way his drying mouth was hanging open. But you don’t feel the sa-
“The trick, Peter, is going to be figuring out how you can pull this from other subjects going forward,” Robin throws the words out so nonchalantly, painfully oblivious to the way his student’s head is spinning. “Now let’s take a look at the setting.”
The rest of the feedback is a ghost to Peter. It drifts by, vacant, untouchable, warping time and reality. All he can think of is you and that look in your eyes. How long had you looked at him like that without him noticing?
Or, more accurately, how long did he notice but not really know what it meant?
Needless to say, he broke land speed records sprinting out of the building the second class ended, and ripping his skateboard down the sidewalk towards your apartment just off-campus.
Oblivious to Peter’s crisis, you pick up a fork and make your way to the fuzzy blankets calling your name. Your roommates were out and it was the perfect night for Doordash and a marathon of that show you’d been wanting to see. You settle onto the couch, ready to press play, when you hear a frantic knock at your front door and Peter shouting your name through it.
“I know you’re in there!” He yells, still pounding. You lower your brow and practically vault over the couch trying to get to the door before he breaks it down with his fist.
“I’m coming! Jeez, Pete!” You yell back right before your fingers flip the deadbolt and you pull the door inwards. “What the hell’s the matter with y-”
“How long?” He demands, waging a glare so intense you suddenly feel like you’ve done something super wrong. Your mouth falls slack as Peter brushes past you to enter your apartment.
It takes you a moment to recover, to try and put together what the hell he was on about, and by the time you realise that he’s out of line coming in here with vague accusations, so you close the door and turn to face him, you’re met with the sight of his open laptop screen on your kitchen counter.
It’s a photo of you, from the wildflower fields. Something deep in you wants to internally cringe but… it looks real. Honest.
When you meet Peter’s eye, he looks the same way. Except there’s something desperate in his gaze.
“How long?” He repeated, breathless and wanting.
You open your mouth to respond and quickly realise you don’t know how to. Thankfully, Peter fills in the blanks.
“How long have you been in love with me?”
It’s a punch to the gut. That question. It sucks every bit of air from your lungs, from your throat, tears spring to your eyes and you don’t really know why. Maybe because it’s so out of left-field and you have no time for any other reaction. Maybe because of the despairing way he was looking at you, and you had no idea why he’d be doing this.
“Peter, please,” you choked out. It was useless to lie to him. “I’ve never expected anything more from you, I’m happy with-”
He takes a step forward. “How long?”
You cover your eyes with the heels of your palms and sniff in a cry. “I don’t know. A while, I guess.”
You feel him take another step towards you and you’re sure you’re done for. He’s going to step around you and walk out and never come back and-
“We’ve wasted so much time,” his gentle whisper comes. His touch comes too, weaving through your own, tugging your palms from your eyes just far enough for him to place his hands, cradling either side of your face.
You brave meeting his eye, and… peace.
Your shoulders release their tension, your jaw unclenches, your hands find rest around his wrists. In a feeble attempt to explain, you mumble, “I didn’t know if you were ready.”
The metaphysical mention of Gwen sends a bolt of grief through Peter’s heart. But it’s a grief he’s grown to greet like a friend; one that will always be with him, one that wants him to grow.
His thumb traces the warm blush on your cheekbones, wiping away a tear in the process. He didn’t do this right. He should’ve done this better but the pain and recognition and the want all melded into one and-
He stops overthinking and doesn’t waste any more time.
Peter ducks his head and kisses you like it’s the easiest thing in the world. Like he already knows the contours of your skin, like he’s memorised the steady beckoning in your breath.
He’s a welcoming home. Under his hands, you find a refuge. When he steps into you, closing the space between your bodies, the heat of him is an all-encompassing embrace. You kiss him like it’s something you’ve done a thousand times before. It feels so right. The taste of forever is sweeter than any time you’d ever dreamed of it.
Because this time it’s real.

ok uhh okay. spiderverse 2 thoughts. in bullet points for the sake of my churning brain cuz im just not rly sure how i feel abt it rn. like it was a good movie? i enjoyed it it was fast paced i didnt realize 2+ hours went by which also segues into  my first thought but like. yeah i have thoughts.
first of all that was like a super weird ending decision to make it a part 1 of 2. zero warning for that. and i sat in that theater till credits bcuz i genuinely thought i was being punked and the movie was going to finish, bcuz it did not at all feel like a place to stop for the movie. it ends like right before the climax?? yes they really. extended themselves damn far for this one and it would be a lot to tie up in like another 45 minutes of movie but also like you couldve done it.. i really dont. understand. like ppl just sat in the movie theater like wait is it done. theyre ending it here? for real? like it wasnt the kind of ending you expect from this movie
animation was obviously gorgeous and insane i dont even need to talk about what eye candy it was. the different styles all together the fight scenes ugh so good yeah yeah everyone knew it would be a trip
rly cannot stress enough what a Direction this sure was. i dont like say it as crit necessarily just like. did they over extend. maybe. they sure Extended. i would expect this maybe for a third movie not a second but they were clearly trying to blow the first one out of the water. it was just.. a lot looser. it needed to be tighter. i dont know what theyre planning for the 3rd movie but i really did not like. vibe with that ending decision
they changed peni’s design slightly and gave her a cooler mech so thats nice. maybe they listened 2 criticisms abt that
i cant decide how i feel abt a lot of the dialogue tbh it rly wasnt my thing a lot of the time like. the changing writers were kind of.. obvious. and there was a LOT of dialogue bcuz this movies purpose seems to be a very Character Driven story to prepare for the next? like theyre TRYING to say stuff thats for sure. also it was rly quippy in a way that i feel has gotten kind of tired with dialogue writing like SOME dialogue was genuinely funny and good to me like i wouldnt say it was BAD or something (some of it was bad.) it was just.. noticeably different? the tone for this movie was changed from the first which again isnt bad youre telling a different story it was just Different yeah. some things i rly thought couldve been handled like with more subtlety.
i guess we only had one movie with the original cast but some stuff just like i personally was sitting there trying to figure out if it felt in character or not. its rly hard to explain if u havent watched it i think and maybe im just crazy i dunno. im absolutely not opposed to making ur characters fuck up and make mistakes but like. huh. i guess. i would not expect otherwise from gwen bcuz shes a teenager but i was.. surprised that peter was going along with it like ? hes a middle aged man lol he wasnt like taken advantage of or manipulated in any way. not like they were trying to say that w the like spider group anyway, like i dont think they were tryingto say gwen was necessariyl taken advantage of or anything, like they werent trying to make them read as ‘evil’ if anything just like wow these ppl sure have Problems they are going thruogh. but like still? im not invested in peters character even it just felt kind of weird. miles went fucking through it too like jesus christ im still trying to wrap my brain around all this it sure does feel like theyre putting these ppl thru comic book trauma
what i went through emotionally wheni realized they were going to do Dark Miles i dont even mean that as criticism or anything its just a bold move man. buti was sitting there like yeah of course they would. hope they make it work
i dunno i probably have more thoughts im just kind of like sitting here lol like what a weird decision. if they hadnt ended it like that i probably would have my thoughts more tied together bcuz the movie itself wasnt tied up?? so its kind of hard to even like think through everything on one watch

TWO SUGARS FEEDBACK FROM CIRT
Before I start I just want to say that I think the group, very much including myself, started doubting our film and not feeling super confident with it a couple weeks before there crit. It’s a shame because we all worked so well and hard to get the finished product but It might just be because it’s been a busy busy term and we just wanted things to be done. That’s not saying we rushed it but it definitely affected our mood for the crit.
CLASS FEEDBACK:
- Good casting.
- Great edit. Flowed really well and was easy to watch because it was put together really well. (Congrats Rosie!)
- Lots of people responded really well to the naturalism of the first scene.
- The eye movements of the characters eyes was executed really well and accompanied by some really good blocking.
- The green jumper wasn't as clear as it should be. Needed to be some cut aways to jumper to signify the importance of it to the story.
- Atmos sounds needed for the first scene.
- Strong performances especially Conor (Cameron).
RESPONSE TO FEEDBACK
I’m really glad that the class liked it for the most part. I was really nervous to see what they thought of something that we worked really hard on and I'm happy with the responses to it.
CATRIONA FEEDBACK:
- liked the performances however thought at times that Sarah was a little too theatrical.
- Had the same point about the jumper. It didn’t work in the film and needed to serve as a more important object.
- The script was good and easy to follow.
- Cinematography: Thought the lighting was very good in the first scene, didn’t like the wide shots and though that we needed more coverage.
- Edit with consistent and confident in itself- knew hat it wanted to be and stuck to it.
RESPONSE TO FEEDBACK:
Overall I'm happy that Catriona liked it. I was having doubts about the script shortly after our shoot but that seems to be okay after the crit. I get what people were saying about the jumper. It was heavily implied in the script however we just didn’t manage to capture it correctly in the film and I think having a couple extra insert shots of the jumper would have helped a lot.
ANDREW FEEDBACK:
- Thought Conor was very watchable and well written.
- Liked the lighting in the first scene however thought it could do with more production design.
- Wide shots were his least favourite and he also agreed with Catriona about not having enough coverage.
- Needs to be a beat longer at the end to see her reaction better and to hold on her face.
RESPONSE TO FEEDBACK:
I agree with Andrew about the final shot of the film. It was a last minute change to the script and I think it would have worked if we had a longer take of looking down at Gwen or even a reverse shot from Gwen’s POV looking at the hand move from Cameron’s shoulder. I think if we had added a few more beats the tension of it all would have landed better.
LAURA FEEDBACK:
- Liked the performances and thought they were believable and casted well.
- Was also a bit lost with the green jumper on first viewing it.
- Likes the title of the film.
RESPONSE TO FEEDBACK
I’m so glad that Laura liked the casting of the film. Working as producer and writer wasn't easy I will say and will try avoid it in the future. It was really hard balancing casting calls, risk assessments, conversation with Bonnie about story and writing draft after draft however it thankfully has paid off and I'm so glad.
ZOE FEEDBACK:
- Good handling of recording dialogue and very clear with the actors on screen.
- Thought the off screen dialogue was a little bit lost and can be improved and cleared up a bit.
- Didn’t like the credits as it didn’t seem to have anything to do with the film.
RESPONSE TO FEEDBACK
With regards to sound I can’t say much but I know Jenny worked really hard on it and I'm really impressed with how far it’s come so well done Jenny! with the credits I think everyone in the group wasn’t that surprised by this comment. We kind of just did it cause it was fun and we were getting a bit sick of the film and were on a downer so decided to do something fun and creative.
LEO FEEDBACK:
- The sound needed a bit more space to breath in relation to the cuts in the film.  Just enough so it sits with the audience better.
OVERALL:
I’m happy with the feedback we got but I just wish I was happy with my own work. Everyone in the group were amazing to work with and it was such a creative team however I think self sabotage was quite bad within the group. starting the project I was super confident with the script but seeing other groups work I just started doubting myself thinking I could have done so much more but that’s just a personal thing. I definitely think the film shines in areas such as the edit, blocking, sound, lighting and there are definitely things we could/ can work on.
If we were to revisit the film I would definitely work on the representation and symbolism of the green jumper next time. I would also not do producing and writing together because it definitely restricted what I could do in terms of focusing on one thing at a time along with other roles from other modules. I did enjoy the role of producing however felt it quite intense in moments but I think that was to do with the work load.

Okay, okay. Still thinking about the Gwen scene. If the point is to show he can get away with murder, then how is it that he can't get around the ancient lands rule (which explicitly stated in canon then proven by his actions)? Is it somehow more serious than killing a colleague for no reason? What even is that logic?

okay so bbc merlin really wanted to have an egalitarian arthur who looked past class/social status, but i think it fails in this by keeping merlin a servant. or, more specifically, by not really changing that arthur treats merlin differently than the knights or gwen because he’s a servant. and even when you have moments where he doesn’t it doesn’t really speak to any consequential change? or you have moments like the end of 5x03 where there’s the serious conclusion of the episode that he wants everyone in his kingdom to be equal, but then it’s directly undercut by joking about how merlin’s still a servant and doesn’t get the same respect as other people.
and having a lowborn guinevere goes a long way to accomplishing what i think this show wanted their version of king arthur to primarily stand for, but then they don’t really develop what her being lowborn would mean in her approach to being queen, and anything that’s gained from what they do with her story is again undercut by how merlin is treated.

My biggest gripe with Miles and Gwen. They did NOT have to do them like that, their dynamic was almost perfect but then they had to pull out this amatonormative ass trick yet somehow made it more obvious HOBIE liked Miles and ALSO somehow didn't think to adress that Gwen and Hobie were literally a t4t couple before they were in-universe because of the ship tease and Hobie being implied genderqueer and then had the audacity to bait us THRICE but this time with black love(Margo's own Miles tease).I love Ghostflower a lot but this is why i don't want them to be endgame,it feels unsatisfying

Hello. I have seen your Merlin crit posts and they seemed to be really interesting. However, I wanted to ask your opinion about something in the show (not anything political or such)
What is your opinion on the fact that in s5, the friendships Merlin had in the previous seasons with Gwen and the Knights are non - existent? Who do you think would be capable of helping Merlin during the season, apart from Gaius and Killgarah (he was mostly useless but still)?
What is your opinion on the episode "Lesson in Vengeance"?
@fanficwritinggremlin
At s5x07, merlin is running on fumes and is directionless.
See s5x05: The Disir MERLIN It won't always be like this. One day we will live in freedom again. MORDRED (looks up hopefully) You really believe that? MERLIN I do.
He has A Political Goal which is "one day we will live in freedom again" but still has no idea of the following:
(1) how to get there:
(2) what it actually looks like.
-->By s5 Merlin still has no concrete plans nor timeline and no step-by-step agenda to achieve his Political Goal™
And due to various previous circumstances, he had been cut off socially (or by rank/class), emotionally, psychologically and physically from everyone who used to genuinely care about him or want to see him at his best.
Now... how is someone else supposed to help the dude:
who have been conditioned in the past 8 to 10 years that he alone could fix thirty years of worth of genocide, the propaganda surrounding the genocide and its far-reaching side-effects?
who've had everyone he loved dead because they protected him or he have had to sacrifice them (without their knowledge) for the greater good?
who even now, never tries to negotiate properly with his opponents on equal and honest terms?
who has lied to the state repeatedly and thus destabilized it from the inside because of his withholding of important state secrets?
..........................
The only thing Merlin had left was a real show/display of his own power in public. A magic reveal.
why?
because Merlin does not have any real court power. He was never advanced socially in rank by his sovereign bosses. He has no true allies who can actually help him get near his Political Goal.
Merlin really really needs to have political power if he wanted his Political Goal to be achieved. Since his sovereign king and queen never gave that to him, at season 5, then he needed to show why he deserves some.
Therefore at s5x07 the only one who can actually and efficiently help him is himself.
.....................
Consider his narrative equal and foil, Morgana.
What they both have in s5x07
advanced use of magic
dragons
fortified kingdoms under their control
justification
What Morgana had that Merlin didn't have
name, reknown, fame, a political kind of "brand"
support of almost all armed non-magic and magic factions and entities that want to destroy camelot
legitimate claim to the throne
money, machinery and people after 1-2 years of regaining everything from scratch
What Merlin had that Morgana did not have
just some vital pieces of information.
support of a dwindling indigenous faction who will never take up arms
You see what I mean? Morgana had allies, strong allies, who helped her plan her strategies and support these plans at every aspect. This is because they knew her and they trusted what she could do. And she got to trust them too.
Morgana did her best to gain as many allies as she could through any means, because Morgana knew she could never overthrow Camelot on her own.
Merlin had none. Even in his relatively safe location inside Camelot, he never built a network of other entities who can actually support him. Gaius kept forbidding him to reach out to others. Kilgharrah advised against it many times. Merlin was made to believe that fixing everything thru only his own power and alone was the best way to do things.
That's why Morgana was perfect foil to him. She had huge political influence and power. Moreover, she was systematic and delegated a lot of revolutionary/rebellion tasks and activities to her allies. They were empowered and did well because she rewarded them too.
Merlin had a lot of advantages as her but Merlin's indoctrination and training did not allow for him branch out and step into a prime political position just like Morgana did. He took the lone wolf path too far and was surprised when over time, nobody in Camelot was truly left in total support for him.
......................
The bottomline is... Merlin reveals himself -> he gains much needed political power and court influence -> he is closer to his Political Goal.
............
addendum you might ask: what if arthur executes him??
-> that's merlin's problem for being so treasonous in the first place. if he's really destined to become the most powerful warlock kingmaker and advisor, then he can talk and live through any threat arthur would give him.
