@emmalostinwonderland: The story is gripping, the characters are compelling, and the myth they chose is really under-appreciated. I rode the entire rollercoaster of emotions with this one, and I would gladly do it again.

anon: A really sweet, in progress, NHL AU. It's in progress but It's really enjoyable so far, especially as it draws a lot of similarities to book moments, without being a copy.

Heartaches and Cupcakes and Sunshine Boys by @everwitch-magiks

anon: This was the first RWRB fic I read, and it's still my favorite! Henry as a writer (and her skill writing as Henry) and the emotional depth of this fic are things I need in every fic!

love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves by @kapplebougher

anon: I am simply OBSESSED with this oneshot, I scream about it to anybody that will listen. I come back and read it every time I read the climax of Alex and Henry's argument in London. It is Henry POV and the first time I read it I truly wondered if it was CMQ writing Henry fic on AO3. Not only does it build on the signet ring and give background on what it means to Henry and parallels it with his parents, but it also weaves fire/water symbolism for Alex/Henry. The thing that gets me is the quote at the end though. It's just like the queer historical quotes from the emails in the books and it makes the ending SO PERFECT it just makes me go feral. I wish I could give it all the kudos!

Hey anon, thanks so much for the ask! Sorry, I got a bit verbose on these ones lmao.

6. Do you have your work beta'd? How important is this to your process?

I do. These days the lovely @cricketnationrise and @celeritas2997 are my main document gremlins. I never used to have my work beta'd because I felt like I didn't really want critique (I get enough of that in my day job), but now I pretty much send them all my RWRB stories. For one, I get in-line screaming comments about phrases or parts that are exceptional, and for two, they make suggestions that have definitely made my stories better. For example, the epilogue to Please Don't Let Me Be So Understood originally ended slightly differently and tbh I wasn't 100% happy with it but didn't know how to fix it, and cee made a great suggestion to help keep it a bit more in character and a little lighter, not to mention that she actually suggested the last line that people have loved (thank you cee!). So yeah, I find their feedback very important these days.

7. How do you choose which POV to write from?

Usually it depends on what kind of story I want to tell. For one shots, I figure out which character's feelings I want to be the main framing of the story. Each story is often about one of them more than the other, so it usually just feels right. I also think about what information I want to keep hidden or reveal. If I'm building up a mystery or need someone's motivations to be unclear, then that plays into it too. Funnily enough I find myself writing Alex & Henry more exclusively from one POV or the other than I ever have in past fandoms (where I more frequently did POV changes). I think that's because we canonically know a lot about their feelings, so keeping things interesting in a new story can sometimes require keeping the reader in the dark. That said the next big thing I'm writing (You've Got Mail AU) has pretty rapid POV changes!

All right I'm assuming this means other people's fics and not my own, but who knows. Also this is HARD, so I'm not really answering favorite of all time, because I don't think I could, but favorites I've read recently (which. I'm so behind on, omg). These are all firstprince.

we’re right here for a reason [M] by @smc-27, which is a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days AU that's funny and sexy and full of heart.

Nebuchad-never had a friend like me [E] by @clottedcreamfudge, in which they have DRAGONS, because DRAGONS (and also because it's amazing and hilarious and full of exceptional magical realism worldbuilding).

Going Platinum [E... very very E] by @cricketnationrise, in which Alex is a camboy and Henry is a subscriber, because it's so creative and scorching hot, and I never thought I would be into a camboy au but cricket proved me dead wrong.

Okay look. I am reading Red White and Royal Blue. The movie, while in spirit in some ways has captured the same heart, is like Guardian cdrama to Guardian novel. I love them both and they're both a bit different experiences. But wow does it feel GOOD to watch a movie that makes me smile and my heart ache with things i relate to as well as happy moments I long to have. And on that note, a list of queer romance movies I recommend for cheering you up on a heavy day:

Red White and Royal Blue: theres a touch of realism in how it hits the heart, a heaping helping of fantastical with the premise of son of the president getting with the prince of england, a dollop of politics (which I've not seen in a romcom before much so I was happy for it, but if you want more get the book), a lot of loving references to the 90s kids generation in a way that makes this romcom hit in a way old 90s romcoms never could For Me be as close to home, and it's just <3 it's The Romcom for me.

But I'm a Cheerleader: gay conversion camp but make it campy, save the queers and help us love ourselves and accept we can be Whoever We Are (a message that applies to all watcher honestly), a very loving make love scene with violins that rwrb's scene reminded me of (in a good way, queer movies deserve more of this tbh), natasha Leone and Clea Duvall and Dante Basco (I'm gayer just reading that), and best of all? The cheerleader falls in love and her love chooses her back. This is THE first truly happy queer romance film I watched as a teenager, had a happier outcome than my own life at the time, and really made me believe I deserved happiness and good things and that I belonged to existing in this world as myself as much as anyone does. The overt queer politics in this film means it might hit too close to home if you're not up for that, but it's handled with humor (a LOT like rwrb handles politics) and so I'd say if you're looking for political and optimistic? This is another excellent choice. This will forever be one of my favorite movies.

DEBS: I especially recommend this to any queer teen girls out there, and any former teen girls who wished they had their own teen romcoms with lesbians growing up! It's like Agent Cody Banks meets Charlie's Angels, tonally it's Totally Spies and Teen Movie 100%, so it's silly and campy and nothing is ever actually horrifically serious and sad. A teen spy girl (our Charlie's angels for queer teen girls) falls in love with Lucy Diamond, the biggest Super Villian in the world. What ensues is falling in love, overcoming differences, overcoming heteronormativity, and friends loving and supporting you when push comes to shove. It is absolutely a fun action romance romp for queer girls. It's Charlie's angels if they were all gay and made for the queer girls to crush on Especially. It's delightful and lighthearted and fun.

Zerophilia is an AMAZING and weird indie movie with a happy ending #and it plays with the sex of characters and the idea of what does gender even mean or have to do with attraction #but it was made a long time ago and no one really was talking about trans people much let alone nonbinary people #but for me? as a nonbinary person it was sort of this escapist wish fulfillment with a happh ending and felt very freeing.#also like. To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything is HEALING #but it may hit too realistic for some to be totally cheerful. and its not a romcom so much as it is about friendship and love in that way

last song: i am my own muse by fall out boy, from the new album. ("got to throw this year away, like a bad luck charm"-- yes, yes we do but let's not tempt fate yet. still got three months to go.) i'm listening to the album off and on so I can decide on my next tattoo.

last film: Uh.. Oh! Red, White and Royal Blue, duh. Before that though I have no idea.

currently reading (or last read): I'm such a bad reader this year always. I did reread RWRB before the movie came out.

currently watching: talking about rewatching the mdzs donghua! but haven't started yet.

current obsession: literally just started editing my pre-chengxian fic that everyone probably though I'd abandoned (but I haven't). also, I started watching a fall out boy interview on youtube last night and was like... extremely charmed by pete/patrick so. is 2024 gonna be the bandom resurgance? I could dig it. (broken robots sequel when? haha joking but not really). but also, mdzs is making a comeback!

and, always and forever, queer as folk. not giving up on being obsessed with brian/justin until they get that happy nyc ending.

last song/currently listening: Tilted, by Christine and the Queens orrrrr bad guy by Billie Eilish (two different music players, you see)

favourite colour: RED. RED RED RED. So that line in Enchanted where 'he wears your favourite colour just to match your eyes' has literally never felt true for me.

currently watching: Only Connect, NZ Taskmaster, UK Taskmaster, Strictly (I am a middle-aged woman) (I'm 33, but still), Ghosts starts up on Friday, hoping for a Great British Menu happening later this year.

other stuff I watched this year: Good Omens S2 (wonderful), Ted Lasso (incredible), Schmigadoon! (loved it but was VERY ill at the time so don't recall much of it), Shadow and Bone

shows I didn't finish: Shadow and Bone - we moved. Also we'd seen the Ben Barnes kiss by that point, so what was the point?

last movie: Barbie at the cinema!

currently reading: any and all RWRB fanfic that comes my way, special shout out to @clottedcreamfudge for her Midsomer Murders one, back issues of Gramarye, a million terrible KU romance books.

I don't understand why being happy on a 100% score is a bad thing. We all expected a lower % from the start and bad reviews, of course we are happy. It's only 10 reviews true and it'll go down but no one said anything when RWRB had 90% with 10reviews, I even remember that it was brought up to make comparision with those praising Anyone but you and the 80% score it got. Since when celebrating small successes is a problem in this fandom?

It's not! Of course it's not. I guess what the Anon was saying is, for them, it wasn't telling enough to be celebrate -- or to be celebrated as much as it had been.

I guess what we both saying is what happens inside a fandom and for a fandom vs what it represents for the outside and for a general audience is really different and sometimes people tend to forget a bit about that. When you're deeply involved in the fandom even the smallest things feel really intense and big and life shattering. But if you zoom out a bit, people who are a bit outside of it, even if they do love Nick, will find some reactions pretty disproportionated compared to their own experiences of things.

But it's also understandable for people who has been following and supporting Nick for many years, to be really involved in his achievements. We're all have different experiences. If you want to celebrate, feel free to. Hence the importance of finding your own people in a fandom/group. It's also relevant for previous Anon. I'm guessing they're not going around telling people who were celebrating to shut up. They come to me because they rightfully felt like I might share some of their feelings. Just because they're (or I am) annoyed by someone's else behavior, doesn't mean the said behavior is wrong. Hateful/insulting/toxic comments are never ok but everything else can co-exist even if people will disagree. Be happy for a grade. Don't be happy for a grade. Be objective. Be subjective. It's no big deal.

I wasn't around by the time RWRB got 90% and I don't know where previous Anon was at that time either but I'm pretty sure I would have say the same, that 6 or 10 reviews weren't enough to draw any conclusion on anything. Well I'm not even sure I'll give a 90% to RWRB (probably not 💀) and I still love this movie and the people who have made it.

I'm really happy Nick had a successful premiere. Not because I want the movie to be a success (I'm really not excited about the project, so i don't care that much if it does well or not. Nick is talented enough (and not even the 1st on the call sheet) so it doesn't affect his career that much if it doesn't do well) but because Nick got to experience a bit of the love and support he deserves. The day showed even more that fans will follow him from projects to projects. A large part of the audience was there for him and from what I understood, they made the experience of the screening pretty special. I think this says more and is more important than any grade. Grading creativity doesn't make much more sense to me as comparing people so, this isn't something I see worth celebrating, I guess.

TLDR: I could have summarize everything by saying: a fandom is not an unity with one universal book of rules that everybody should be following. What might be a problem for some isn't for someone else and it's ok as long nobody isn't insulting anyone else.

Fic Writer Asks!

I was tagged by @read-and-write- and happiness-of-the-pursuit

ao3 username: Muddbloodpotter05

Fandoms: I have only written for and published for two fandoms- EastEnders (British Soap), but I write for my Ben and Callum “Ballum”, specifically. They are my ride or die ship for that show. I also write for Red, White and Royal Blue.

(Though I did write for HP and crossed that over with Charmed way too many years ago, 😅)

Number of works: 11! (Four are for my EastEnders, Ballum ship and Seven are for RWRB, though one of those for rwrb is my catch-all for any drabbles or drabbles that exceeded the 100 word only requirement).

Work I spent the most time on: this one is a bit harder to answer…of my published stories, I would have to say it is between 3 stories. Two of them fall in my EE fandom for Ballum and those are Someone to Watch Over Me and Your Final Words. For RWRB it would have to be my Now and Then. All three of these took about the same amount of time (roughly two ish months) for each of these because I tend to agonize over my writing and wanting to make sure I frame it and get the flow how I want).

This is likely to end up changing due to the current story I am working on, which is tentatively titled “Time and Time Again” for RWRB.

Work I spent the least time on: besides any drabbles…it would be between two stories If Only for One Night, for EE and Ballum and then Lacrosse My Heart and Hope… - both of these stories just flew out of my brain and into a doc within a single day and then posted to ao3 a couple days later after my wonderful Beta went over them!

Longest fic: this would have to be Now and Then for RWRB. Again, this is likely to change as my new story is currently sitting a little over 8k and that is just chapter 1!

Shortest fic: my drabbles, definitely, though some exceed the 100 word maximum, so I will also list Is that my sweatshirt for RWRB. (It my newest story and contains smut and was inspired by some amazing art of Henry running while wearing one of Alex’s jersey’s.)

Most hits: Bump In the Night which clocks in at 5,540 hits!

Most Kudos: that would be Is that my sweatshirt and has 206 kudos! I love this for my one shot! (Again, mind the tags for Smut).

Total word count: 105,989 (published at this exact moment)

Favorite work of my own: oof, this question sort of hurts, 😅, but if I have to pick I would say any of those listed in the question about the ‘work I spent the most time on’. Those three have to be the ones I’m most proud of!

Fic you want to rewrite or expand on: it would probably have to be Now and Then, but only because I have ideas/thoughts that didn’t make it into the story.

Share a bit of a wip: this is from chapter 1 of my current multi-chapter story-

It’s old. Worn, but still seems to be in good condition. An antique. One of the drawers seems to be stuck, maybe locked. The last time he saw one that looked like this was on a trip to the Smithsonian in his Junior year. So yeah, a fucking antique it may be, but it was the only desk that Alex had found that sparked any sort of joy. (Thank you, Marie Kondo!)

That joy being: it was dirt fucking cheap and he was past being picky.

Well, not exactly. Or not only the price, exactly.

He didn’t know why, but when he looked at it…Alex felt wistful.

Maybe it was his lack of sleep. Maybe it was the air of history hanging about it. Maybe it was haunted! (Not that he believed in ghosts and crystals, voodoo and magic…that was all his sister, June) Or it could very well be the curry from the back of his fridge that he should’ve thrown away. Still, none of those were going to stop him from making this purchase.

@heybuddy-drabbles: Well, I can now confirm that I'm 100% cerified a pridepages fan. The way she picks the themes of the original source and uses them in a different setting is just absolutely flawless, the same happens in Little Pages. It's gives you the same feelings of reading rwrb but also reading something new and different all at the same time.

My Brother’s Keeper by @indomitable-love (book-verse)

@janetical: Written in Philip’s POV, it tackles all the canon events in a frustrating yet heart-wrenching way. I knew what I was getting myself into when I noticed the POV, but I really did hate Philip less at the end of this fic. Everything is entailed in this little story: unresolved daddy issues and grief, internalized homophobia and Philip acknowledging Henry’s first time. It will make you cry, and it will end on a somewhat happy note.

@suseagull04: This is a fic I couldn't put down! I'm always a fan of Henry being a writer in fics (so the description alone caught my eye), and the mix of cute moments with firstprince (and David) and plot twists had me hooked! It's also such an interesting look at the life of a writer and how difficult it is for them to have anonymity, which was especially interesting to me because of the writers strike in Hollywood.

@heybuddy-drabbles: This is just so beautiful. It's basically about Henry mostly. I didn't expect the "past" part would hit so hard but it did. I had to put it down a few times because it was truly heartbreaking but it has a happy ending. Don't be fooled like I was about it being all fluff. It's not, it's very nostalgic and they are apart for a long time but I still recommend it because, like I said, it's really beautiful.

Deep Blue by @myheartalivewrites (book-verse)

@thesleepyskipper: This was just a stunning piece of writing that does such a wonderful job of evoking images of the seaside cliffs, swimming in the cove and spending lazy days in the cottage above. At the same time, we get all that delicious pining and FWB to lovers fun within that beautiful setting. The spicy bits are beautifully done too! Highly recommend!

@babiemonk: So amazing, I didn’t want it to ever end. The angst was so good. The kidfic element was perfect. Possibly the perfect fic.

@dot524: I absolutely loved this one. Such a ride and I enjoyed every bit of it. I also really enjoyed the character of Alex’s daughter. Lots of complexity, great story arc.

God Save the Blessed American President Mom by @zipadeea (book-verse)

@babiemonk: This fucking broke me I cried for at least an entire day

@suseagull04: This is such an introspective look at Alex and Ellen's relationship (and Ellen as a character in general) and it's so good!

@indomitable-love: A really lovely and sensitively told conversation between Oscar & Henry, where Oscar catches Henry sneaking out of the lake house. This one got me right in my emotions. Very healing.

Bite Your Tongue On Purpose by Woodsarelovely (book-verse)

@darwinsfinchesx: Coffee Shop AU with a twist. This fic has some of the best dialogue I’ve ever read. It’s delightful, funny, and the characterization is on point. It leaves a big smile on my face every time I re-read it.

@gwiazdziarka: Sleeping beauty AU, where they don't need to fight with witches or dragons but there are... other problems. I love modern-day solutions to fairy-tale problems and here it actually just makes everything more complicated.

Mr. Bodypillow by @inexplicablymine (book-verse)

@gwiazdziarka: Yes, I recently recommended this one as wip, but now it's complete and I just need to bring it up again, because it deserves all the attention. Alex and Henry have the most amazing relationship here that goes outside of usual norms. It's also the warmest and the sweetest thing that I've read in a while. And it has great ace representation.

@read-and-write-: Is Ace!Alex very special to you? Do you want to feel like someone is wrapping you in a soft blanket? Then Mr. BodyPillow is for you! It's beautiful and will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside

@suseagull04: This fic will both make you laugh and give you all the feels. An awkward first interaction when Henry requests an Uber ride leads to an instant connection and sizzling chemistry, all leading to a conclusion that, although satisfying, will leave you wanting more of this verse!

@myheartalivewrites: A Tour de France, rivals cyclists AU! Keeping a lot of the book dynamics, Alex and Henry find themselves competing against each other on the Tour — and then falling into bed. This has everything: thrilling sports passages (even though I haven’t ever watched the Tour in my life!), romantic tension, a great read.

Love-Love by @smc-27 (book-verse)

@myheartalivewrites: a tennis AU set at Wimbledon, which obviously holds a special place in RWRB hearts. Alex and Henry as rival tennis players who’ve hooked up once, and then end up as doubles partners. A quick read that left me all warmed up from the inside.

a flicker, a spark by acastle (book/movie-verse)

@daisymae-12: Wow I don’t have the words to truly convey how much I loved this fic. It diverges from canon at Kensington and the events that follow are so beautifully written. This fic made me cry over an OC, made me feel seen when I recognized parts of my own cultural background woven into a story, made my heart ache for everything Alex and Henry have been through and made me tear up some more. This is one of the most heart-wrenching canon-divergence fics I’ve ever read and I know I’m going to be thinking about it for a long time.

Baby, All At Once (This Is Enough) by @iboatedhere (book-verse)

@daisymae-12: This fic is such a lovely look into Alex & Henry’s life post-canon and had me absolutely melting from the softness of it all.

Will You Brie Mine? by @cha-melodius (book-verse)
