in the book!Death Cure Thomas was fully feeling betrayed by Teresa and although he was kind of starting to be like "oh i forgive you" he wasn't 'feeling the love' anymore. i agree with this ending for them. but in movie!Death Cure it looked like Thomas was both ready to forgive and ready to 'feel the love' until she fell to her death.

In honor of jdash confirming newt is gay

it's been 3 years since the tweet(s) and i still have a lot to say. the discourse surrounding it has long since calmed down, but to this day some people's responses bother me immensely and i wanna get a few things off my chest.

"it undermines his friendships"

um.. no ? i can't believe people still have this weird mindset. straight people can have friends of the opposite gender, gay people can have friends of the same gender. bi people ?? pan people ?? they can have friends. (don't even get me started on the weird spot nb people land in with this weird friend mindset some homophobes have).

if you never saw newt's relationship with thomas/minho (or even alby) as anything other than platonic before, then newt being gay literally changes nothing.

"he did it as fanservice"

no. if it was fanserice he would've pandered more to the ships; newtmas being the most popular but thomas was not mentioned. if it was fanservice and for any personal gain he would've hinted at other characters also potentially being queer. if it was fanservice he probably would've at least confirmed newt was into thomas; but he didn't. cause it wasn't about any romance, it was about newt and a part of his character.

the crank palace would've been the perfect opportunity to pander more to shippers if that's what he was doing, but there were no explicitly hinted romantic feelings there either. (there were certainly ways to read certain parts of this book as queer, but i won't get into that in this post.)

"he was forced"

yes and no.. the final push to him confirming newt's sexuality was because someone criticized him for donating the proceeds from the crank palace to lgbtq+ (and BLM) charities. however, the way his tweets were phrased leads me to believe what he says. he voices his apprehension to confirm something so long after the work was released in fear of it coming across as insincere. (*cough* jkr *cough*). he also mentioned in this same 2-part tweet that his upcoming series (at the time) would feature lgbtq+ characters much more prominently and explicitly (no plausible deniability).

tldr for this point: it was someone criticizing him that finally made it happen, but i do believe he genuinely stands for what he said. he'd gone through a lot of personal development during the 11 years between the first book's release and the tweets, i don't doubt that for a second.

"there were no hints in the books"

this is a hard one to talk about without outing myself as a newtmas shipper, but i have a few things to say.

james did not intentionally write newt as a queer character. if you read through the books and didn't pick up any queer subtext/undertones, then that was how he, at the time of writing, intended it. however . does this mean there was nothing there ? how come a huge part of the fandom read him as queer then ? it's all up to reader interpretation whether certain subtext is or isn't present in the work they're consuming.

newtmas opinions pls

Not sure if you're asking for my opinion on the ship or headcanons, so I'll do both!

First off, MY FAVORITE FUCKING SHIP! In my head, they're living happily ever after in the safe Haven so fuck Canon (no se habla the death cure)

Both in the movies and the books there were clear signs Newt and Thomas had feelings for each other. Thomas kept mentioning Newt's muscles in the books and they just had so much intense staring looks in the movies.

Headcanons:

-I would go for both ways, but I personally like the idea that Newt is a top and Thomas is a bottom

-Thomas would be the big spoon, tho, because after all the people's deaths he feels responsible for, he needs to hold on to Newt to make sure he hasn't lost his lover like he almost had before (Brenda got the cure, so Newt lives!!!)

-Newt would be the little spoon because after all the depression he went through (haven't recovered from Fever Code, btw), poor boi just needs someone to hold him 🥹

-Newt can't shut up when he's with Thomas so he rambles, which he gets embarrassed by sometimes but Thomas loves it.

-Minho is the captain of this ship.

-Newt likes to draw so when he finds a pen or a sharpie or something, he started doodling on anything he can find.

-He doodles stuff on Thomas a lot, and he always gets a little closer than he needs to.

-Thomas likes to call them temporary tattoos as a joke because I just think he might (does he know what a tattoo is?)

-Eventually, Thomas tries to impress Newt by drawing on Newt, too, but it turns out ugly

-Newt pretends to like it anyway and Thomas is embarrassed and blushing bright red while he tries to rub the drawing off Newt's arm

omg i’m very excited to share my headcanons and ships <3 :DD

headcanons; - thomas is naturally a good runner, but his form sucks. he’s sloppy, unsure of his footing, etc, but he’s so quick - minho actually has a knack for cooking but hid his talent so that he could try to find a way out of the maze as a runner - side note for that last one, he practiced constantly at running (usually when everyone was asleep) so that he could save everyone - alby was terrified of being leader after nick and spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out how he would lead the gladers. sometimes newt would help him, but he gained extreme anxiety from the situation. - don’t know if this is canon or not, but the lighting above the glade (book canon) doesn’t feature a sun or stars or clouds. so none of the gladers knew what they exactly looked like. upon their first night outside of the glade, newt couldn’t stop staring at the stars - ivy trio, newt is the stars, minho is the moon, and thomas is the sun. i don’t make the rules. - ben survived his nights in the maze but never found a way out. when he finally gained the courage to go into the glade again, he found no one there. no one sending anything up, no one doing anything. so he spent his last days in the glade, alone (AHH why did i write this 😭) - newt would hold onto thomas’ hand as he slept after finding out he had the flare. it calmed him down while in the scorch - while in paradise, minho and thomas shared a hut for the rest of their lives there. whether it was romantic or platonic, the two of them were closest. everything they went through, they went through together and so they couldn’t sleep the night without the other

ships; - i AM a multi shipper - thominho is a fave of mine, i love them so much <3 - newtmas is a classic and so heartbreaking and they were my first ship from the series - nalby also heartbreaking but they were there for each other till the end of the line and i love that - brenderesa, lesbians unite!! i just love this ship because of the headcanons and fics :D - harriet x sonya, what is their ship name?? i don’t know but the thought of them keeping each other warm while in group b warms MY heart. also i love women

~ Intro

I’ve started these fan pages hoping to share interests with other TMR fans and share some of my own ideas, thoughts, and fan projects. Above all, I’d really like to share about my Newtmas fan fiction writing project. First, I thought I’d ask if there’s really anyone out there seeing this :’)

I might be seen as late, and that would be because I was too young to watch the Maze Runner movies at its time ;-; But after I did, I came to love the story, world, the characters, and their relationships.

~ I haven’t read the books, and I don’t want to—yet

Also something to note: I only know the movies, not the books. I wish to someday read all the books, but I want to stay only in the movie trilogy world for now. It might be ironic, since the books are this series’ origins, where it was born from, the original work, and I’m writing a fan fiction about it. But I have a strong feeling that Newtmas isn’t even a vibe in the books. That what I’ve written and am about to write would be very wildly unrealistic compared to the books. That maybe if I read the books, then my inspiration to write this fan fiction just might be crushed. So I’m deciding to purposely read the books only later down the road.

~ Before you keep reading this:

If you’ve gotten this far, and you don’t know Newt’s story from start to finish within the movies, then you shouldn’t read the rest if you don’t want to find out this way. I wouldn’t really say it’s a spoiler, since everyone already seems to know the events throughout the movies, but just in case, I’ll add this here.

~ Is anyone out there?

I’ve been thinking about the possibility that I might not reach people with my own fan projects either because the fandom isn’t as alive anymore, or because of some cases of the internet’s disappointing algorithms. I’ve been working on something that I’m really proud of, and I really hope to share it with other TMR trilogy fans someday when it’s finished:

~ Newtmas is a very beautiful, delicate thing

A Newtmas fan fiction!

It’s got to be the most popular Maze Runner trilogy ship (is it just me or does it seem even bigger than Thomas and Teresa? Thomresa? Teromas?) and here, I’m taking it and turning it into a fan fiction.

If the sound of a Newtmas fan fiction already catches your attention, then you might have read some Newtmas fan fictions before. You might have seen how off-character the characters can seem or how much the writer sometimes butchers their relationship… Here, I’m doing everything I can to handle Thomas and Newt gently and carefully, because Newtmas is a very delicate and fragile thing, that can be easily failed by any fan writer who might be impatient or who might force the relationship too far too quickly. Thomas and Newt’s relationship is easily loved by TMR trilogy fans, and such a relationship is curiously, unexplainably valuable, but it’s also very delicate. So in my fan fiction, I’m doing everything I can to handle them in the most careful and gentle way, keeping their personalities and character, and I intend to build on their relationship in the most realistic way.

~ Newtmas should have been endgame ;-; / Why I’m writing it

There are so many ways Newt could have been saved. (I could list a whole bunch, but I’ll probably save that for another time.) Seeing that he didn’t make it, it felt like I was robbed of something. Even though the movies gave us this beautiful relationship between the two, it felt like it should have lived on. It felt like it ended too soon. We were given something amazing, but it was taken away too painfully, too quickly. I know Newt died, and that’s how the story goes…but imagine if he didn’t. Imagine he was saved (by one of the many possible ways…) and lived on, and eventually became the most special part of Thomas’ life while living on the safe sanctuary by the beach.

~ My style of writing it

The main focus is Thomas and Newt’s relationship by the end of it all, but it won’t be writing purely all about the two. It won’t be like the other characters don’t exist; it won’t be like the other characters don’t matter. Because they really do, even when the main focus and main inspiration of the writing is Thomas and Newt’s relationship. The other characters are a part of the world and are still a big part of Thomas and Newt’s lives. And the writing also won’t be solely all events focused on only the relationship. Another thing that might seem off about Newtmas fan fictions is that it might be all about them, as if no other characters exist or as if nothing else happens except for their relationship growing. In my fan fiction, other things will happen, and the other characters will still be a big part of it. It’s like a way to care more for Thomas and Newt’s relationship by lessening the overall focus on it a little. I *really* don’t want to overdo anything or rush their relationship, and I’m sure that’s pretty clear by now.

~ My concluding questions

1. Do you think you might be interested in this fan fiction once it’s released into the public? I’m planning to put it on Wattpad once it’s ready, which will be in quite some time, but unlike other fan projects, I’m determined to successfully finish this one. I’m working hard on it for both myself and any other TMR trilogy fans who might have interest in or appreciation for it.

2. Do you agree with my “Newtmas is very delicate” opinion (out of curiosity)? If you do, then you’re sure to appreciate my fan fiction :)

3. Is this fandom still relatively active? :’) Hopefully this amazing series is so great that it still has an active fandom?

4. Not a question, but if you aren’t as interested in the sound of my fan fiction, but know someone who might be, I’d really appreciate a share! And even if you are interested, I’d still very much appreciate a share! I really hope to spread this news about my work-in-progress Newtmas fan fiction. Hopefully it can motivate me to write it not only for myself and my close friends/family, but for other, new people as well. So I’d be very excited to find any encouraging enthusiasm!

End note about this Newtmas fan fiction:

This fan fiction all started with my ideas, my Newtmas-inspired motivation, my thoughts, and is the written form of my ideas. It started with me saying, “I’m going to do this. I’m going to make Newtmas happen, because I refuse to be robbed of it like that.” I’m the writer of it, but so is my sibling, who is working on it with me as a two-collaborative-authors kind of project. We’re in the place of one author, using mainly my foundational ideas, and we’re both writing it together. Some descriptions are mine, and some descriptions are my sibling’s. One thing for sure is that my sibling is a lot better at descriptive and creative writing than me, but I try my best. My sibling is also there to edit and add to my descriptions for the most amazing improvements. My sibling knows the characters a lot better than I do, and can provide judgement or input on a lot of my own ideas about our project, and also suggests ideas of their own. In the end, equal credit goes to the both of us.

It's so weird how you can find parallels between Fandoms. Like take Harry Potter and The Maze Runner. You have Jegulus (James Potter and Regulus Black) and Newtmas (Newt and Thomas).

The main difference between the two is the Jegulus barely exists and Newtmas is the single most shipped thing in the Fandom (I mean there's other ships but the sheer amount of content for Newtmas is mind blowing), but besides that, they're basically the same thing.

For starters you have the fact that in order to write something about these two ships, it almost always has to be either an AU or a fix-it fic because one member of each ship died absurdly young (I think Regulus was 16 and idk Newt's exact age but he was a teenager). And also the entire fandom is always collectively crying about these two.

Also. In both ships, one of the characters has a sibling (Sirius and Sonya/Lizzy) and said sibling is put in a gay ship that's always in the background of any fanfic about them (Sonyarriet or however you write it and Wolfstar).

There's always that one friend that ships it to hell and back (Minho and either Sirius, Remus, or both).

Then there's the ignored canon love interest (Lily and Teresa, although Teresa is significantly less canon). Now here's the only difference I can find. Lily is almost always made gay and with Marlene or Mary or Dorcas, while Teresa is shipped with literally everyone (although there is a tendency towards Minho and Aris). It depends on the author, but they can both be made to be kinda evil or just a hard-core shipper.

Neither one of the ships is ever a background ship, either it's the main plot or it's almost guaranteed to not be there.

And yeah that's everything I can think of. But I'm sure there's more.

Looking for a Six of Crows/Shadow and Bone roleplay. A few things to bear in mind if you’re interested. I want to characters to be the age they are in Six of Crows books, e.g. Kaz would be 17-18 and Inej 16. I would be the one playing Kaz and I am mostly looking for Kanej ship wise: though I am open to found something platonic between Kaz and the other crows. The other thing to bear in mind I would be playing Kaz as Ace, that isn’t to say I am not open to Romance and I do have a plot:

Kaz finds himself falling for Inej but tries to deny it at first. He is pretty sure he liked her romantically, or is starting to, though it takes him a lot of courage for him to eventually admit his feelings towards her, though eventually he does and the two start dating. Only After several near-death encounters, do they both gradually acknowledge their feelings for one another, inching closer and closer to a romantic relationship.

Also looking for Rp partners for a Maze Runner rp. I would play Newt, I won’t do BxG pairings with him unless it’s solely platonic, I only do BxB ship rps with the character. I am looking mostly for Newtmas for this idea, though I prefer my partner to play Thomas for that ship. I do have a list of headcannons I am working on which I send to rp partners and also I do work from both book and film; I actually have an Au idea for after the events of Death Cure, which is kind of like if Newt ended up surviving, If you’re interested my Pms should be open. I am still working on some information for the way I prefer to portray so I don’t have that at the moment but I do have a start to my head-cannons list. I do have a plot point taken from the films of Scorch Trials and Death Cure I can explain to anyone who is interested.

I am semi-lit to advanced lit but I’m have a higher preference for lit to advanced to advanced lie because I do better with detail. The more detail the easier I find it to reply, and the less detail it he more I struggle to reply. My only real triggers are the death of my character, I don’t mind near death especially if it’s a plot point in the book or tv show or film in question etc. though. I allow Oc’s but more comfortable with CCxCC. If Interested comment here.

Hello creators, I'm alive and I will talk about the mazer book again. Btw spoiler alert if you haven't read the books yet, I think. I am at the part where Teresa is awake, and the doors won't close. And I kind of like Teresa, but she comes more over as the love inters for tommy, and I ship newtmas. That why i don'tlike here, and i know what happened in the movies. (Btw I am to the song history hates lovers. Not on purpose, tho) but every time they talk about the connection between them, her eyes and tommy nit want to leave her. I hate it. When I first read the books I went in expecting to ship newtmas because I’d heard about it a bunch but I just couldn’t see it. Thominho and nalby just had way better dynamics. I was kind of like “I mean newtmas is good but thominho and nalby are better”

Then I got to the fandom and so much of the content was newtmas it got annoying. I just wanted to find other stuff but it was just them. I’ve also seen a bunch of toxic newtmas fans (yes I know there are good ones too). I also saw some of them writing fics or AUs making Alby Newt’s abusive ex which made me very upset (because he was never like that at all and there are some racist undertones to that)

I also hate how the fandom puts so much into the scene where Thomas shoots Newt making it romantic. Yes there are powerful emotions there but people romanize Newt going crazy and begging Thomas to shoot him in a weird way I just can’t deal with. Like they take it too far.

Anyway I just really don’t like it, but I’m fine with it existing and those who ship it

Thomally, I'm a thomally shipper as much as a thominho one. All I have to say is MAJOR "he loves me, he loves me not" vibes from some parts of the books. Thomas has (mostly) forgiven Gally for killing Chuck, as he was under the control of WCKD. This ship would need an uncanon storyline to help it, but it is a good ship if done properly in this book

Thoresa, okay. This one is mostly platonic. Thomas canonically friendzones her, so I don't ship them romantically, but the friendly vibes are real (RIP Newt and Teresa BTW)

favorite thing about him

his selflessness!!! throughout all the events of the series (both the books AND the movies) he's consistently putting everyone else's needs before his own. he was one of the leaders of the Glade, which meant he worked day and night to keep the order and safety there. and outside the Glade, he pulled his own weight and even put himself in danger to protect the others on several occasions (saving Minho from the lightning storm is what immediately comes to mind but I know there's a lot more). and even in the death cure, when the flare is taking over and he can feel himself changing, he still stays focused and doesn't let that distract him or anyone else from the end goal. to me it's just....heartbreaking, really. he suffered in silence because he didn't want his friends to grieve him while he was still standing there, and so he had to deal with slowly losing his mind by himself

the fact that he was so focused on the group's survival just added so much more angst to the story and it causes me PAINNNN. like!! in the movies specifically, they were SO CLOSE to giving him the cure!!!!!!!!! they were so achingly close!!!!!!!! but he'd been fighting the virus for so long and it finally took over and he died only moments before the cure arrived. meh nothing really....strikes me as a nOTP tbh. in fact I don't really actively ship anyone in this series! usually when I hard-core ship something, it's because I felt unsatisfied with the media/felt like it's an interesting dynamic to be explored. I was fairly satisfied with the series as a whole and I felt like the overall point of them was complete without romance, and to add a lot of romance (excluding the thomas/teresa thomas/brenda stuff that was already there) would have just....blocked out the horror and morally gray themes, ya know? so idk I don't really have strong feelings about any romantic pairings in this specific piece of media

in fact, I saw someone point out that it would've been a stronger and more potent narrative if Thomas and Teresa were SIBLINGS instead of romantic partners and tbh that hasn't left my brain because they're RIGHT. it would've been soooo compelling ughh I'm going insane just thinking about the parallels here

all that being said, it's kinda fun to play with the narratives a bit :] most of the fic I intend to write in this fandom is friendship/family based, because of my feelings as stated above, but I'm not immune to the newtmas or minewt here <3 there's just something about two best friends who have been through hell and worse together getting to kiss <3

Newt actually left notes for EVERYONE, not just Thomas. he even left one with Thomas intended for Teresa, despite everything she'd done, but ofc she never got the chance to read it so Thomas just kept it in a pocket by his heart. and maybe one day, years later, after he finally found some semblance of peace and healing, he burned it to ash to finally say goodbye to them both

listen I love Newt but the fandom has a tendency to shove Minho aside to make room for him (especially hardcore newtmas shippers) which is... :/ let's all examine why that might be !
