— ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ luffy. sfw. +0.9k words. no warnings.
Sometimes, you feel like you know everything about Luffy. Then, you learn something new about him.
The sea takes the sun’s color the more and more it begins to set, reflecting on your hands and you feel it kissing them with its heat as so it does with your face — it is definitely less scorching than a few hours ago, it would make one thing that it is not so merciless after all, the more and more the moon tugs at it, asking it for a moment to come out and see the things in the very same perspective as it does.
“It’s cool!” Luffy peeks from your shoulder, his neck stretching just a little beyond its natural capacity with a little help of his devil fruit powers. Dark, curious eyes blink once, twice, thrice. You don’t hear it, until you feel his chin rest on your shoulder. You turn your head to the side, surprise tinting your expression as you catch a sight that never once would you have imagined.
“Were you reading?” Comes your question, the same surprise in your face reflects in your intonation.
“Yeah, why not?” He retorts, his gaze never peeling from the piece of paper, “You looked like you were having fun.”
Surprise has silence arise in the atmosphere, only the sound of the gently breaking waves against the Sunny Go can be heard, plus the faint sound of seagulls at the background — if you listened close enough, you could actually hear the clanking of metal in Zoro’s weights, or Sanji’s curses at Usopp and Chopper asking him for the same drinks he had prepared for Nami and Robin. But all that matters is now. You become aware of Luffy’s warmth, his chest lying just right against your back, and the gentle brushing of his fingers, dangling from his bent knees, against your forearms.
“Hey, you’re really good at this,” He chuckles, one of his hands traveling to the top of your head to give it a pat.
You’re not aware that he has gone back to reading, his gaze growing wider and wider as, word by word, he chases after your pen, until he reaches a dead end behind the abrupt end of your pen in the middle of a sentence.
“I wanna know what happens next!”
Stare — is all that you have been able to do ever since that confession that, to him, seemed to go unnoticed, but to you it meant something.
“What’s wrong?” He finally turns to meet you, his neck stretching a bit further just to get a good look at you. His expression contorting into a frown as he catches the way your eyes gleam with the sun, your lips barely parted. You can feel the way the heat pools at your cheeks. If you could look at yourself, you would bet you looked like a fool at the moment. Well, that is if you could even think about the way you looked.
Luffy calls for you, tilting his head as his frown deepens. In a moment, he’s crouching right in front of you — being careful not to fall over the Sunny’s head — and only then do you only snap out of it.
“N-nothing, I…” You try to look for a coherent explanation, but there is none. What are you going to tell him? That you are amazed that he is showing interest in reading? No, because that is just not it.
“What is it?” He asks once again, but this time he is leaning in, as if he could decipher whatever is wrong with you with just a closer look, “Are you feeling sick? Do you want me to call Chopp—”
All it takes you to give him a response is a quick lick of your lips, cup each of his cheeks, and bring his face towards you, your lips meeting his in a deep smooch; it melts in a deeper kind of kiss when his hand rests on your forearm, and when you feel his head tilt just a little. Tender, sweet — it is just what he is.
When you break away, he doesn’t quite understand why the sudden urge to kiss him, but before he can ask he is reminiscing about that moment in which you told him that sometimes one does not need a reason. So, he learned to be more free about them, sometimes even surprising you when his neck stretched straight from the Sunny’s head to pull you in for a kiss before you entered the kitchen to help Sanji, or maybe while you lounged along with the girls, earning a giggle from them both at just how cute you both are.
“I just love you. That’s all.” You smile, and just like a mirror, he reciprocates it, a giggle leaving his lips; he’s so bright, he’s sunshine, and he could brighten the darkest places with just a laugh of his.
While you stroke his cheeks, and laugh along with him, you dwell on the thought: Sometimes, you feel like you know everything about Luffy. Then, you learn something new about him. His capacity to be astounded at the simplest things is a view that sometimes you envy. Everything is an adventure to him, in every sense of his life; it is as if he is discovering something new, every time. It is as if everything took a newer, brighter side every time he found out something new about the world.
Only now do you realize it happens the same to you when it comes to him.
Sometimes, you feel like you know everything about Luffy. Only then, and when you least expect it, he surprises you.
