i'm going feral about queer icon hob gadling thank you very much. I JUST CAN'T WITH HIM. i cry because in the comic in the 1989 panel there's a person at the inn talking about how "of course AIDS isn't a punishment from god." hob has to sit there and hear that and just. JUST. hob being visible! hob being vulnerable in his love! hob surviving all his friends. hob buying the fucking pub with the power of his queer money!!! committing the crime of graffiti to SPRAYPAINT A SIGN FOR HIS LOVE TO FIND

It is... probably because I am a queer historian and that is why I imprinted on Hob in the first place, but uh, yes, I have many feelings about this too, and the subtle way in which queer places and spaces work both in the show and in the Dreamling story specifically. Obviously there are many queer characters in Sandman (and we love it for that), but the White Horse, and then the New Inn, is one of the few physical locations I can think of that is a literal embodiment of queer devotion. Hob buys the old pub and builds the new one so Morpheus, if he does ever come back, can find him! He appropriated the spot where they met the first time, where their relationship was built over centuries, and he both saves the old one and builds a NEW one (new step in their relationship etc etc). And physically paints giant signs because his immortal boyfriend is very stupid! He makes it visible and explicit, he builds his devotion into every fiber of that pub, he does it especially so Dream can still come back and find him if he chooses, he waits patiently, and like... the New Inn is absolutely brimming with queer adoration, and ack.

Also, there was that tantalizing tidbit about the real, historical White Horse pub that the Sandman version was based on, being best known for being run by two women in the 18th century who called themselves "Mr. and Mrs. How." Granted, I found that in the IMDB trivia section and if I was writing an actual paper on it, I'd have to do a heck of a lot more research. However, happily, I am NOT writing a paper, and I say it's real because it feels right. In that case, the White Horse itself is embodied as a queer establishment, a place previously run by married lesbians in Hella Gay 18th-century London, and adds another layer to that being the place where Hob and Dream meet every century to conduct their careful, tentative, tender, unspoken romance.

But then! Tragedy! The pub has been bought and will be shut down, and with it, the physical and literal heart of Hob’s relationship with his "stranger!" As I wrote in my meta about the 1989 scene, everything is so careful, so subtextual, so unspoken, whether it is Hob saying he has been stood up and the bartender deliberately not assuming it was by a woman and offering oblique reassurance that Hob is safe here, as a queer man in violently homophobic 1989. So of course Hob can't stand to think of it going away, and has to save it both for himself and as a queer-friendly establishment! So he takes his queer money, as you say, and does something about it! Maybe bad people get to do whatever in this country with that money too, but so does Hob, and he can claw back a little of the place that has always most belonged to him (and him with Dream).

Hence the New Inn, where Hob absolutely hung Pride flags in the '90s long before it was cool or popularly accepted to do so, was able to use his status both as owner of the establishment and Queer Who Can Kick Your Ass to deal with anyone who had a problem with it, and otherwise keep it ready for the day when his love might get to show up again. It's beautiful! It's visible! It's symbolic! And then when Dream does walk in and make their relationship "visible," i.e. apologising and calling Hob his friend, they get to sit down together in that space that Hob has created and kept as an altar of queer devotion both private and public, they smile at each other adoringly, and then what scene/setting do we cut straight to??

THE GIANT BEATING HEART OF THE THRESHOLD OF DESIRE. FROM ONE BEATING HEART OF DESIRE MADE VISIBLE DIRECTLY TO THE OTHER.

They were insane for this, truly. Insane.

This is going to be unpopular opinion but the scene between Percy and Poseidon in the last episode is so disappointing. I do appreciate the few moments that we got and Toby Stephens is hella talented but they literally included only one of Poseidon's iconic lines, the one about "the sea does not like to be restrained". Where's the "You are a true son of the sea god", "Your mother is a queen amongst women", "I brought you a hero's fate and a hero's fate is never anything but tragic", "Whatever else you do, know that you are mine". I get the significance of Poseidon surrendering to Zeus to save Percy's life but it just seems something is missing without Poseidon's acknowledgement, reassurance and pride towards Percy from the book. This could have been fixed if this scene was just five minutes longer so that Percy and Poseidon could have their heart to heart properly. UGH

New girl - never fails to make me laugh. The crystal meth/aquarium rocks episode is a god tier episode.

Grishaverse - six of crows >> shadow and bone

Good omens - David tennant and Michael sheen are an absolutely iconic comedic duo.

This older post of yours came up on dash and I can't stop laughing bc at first I just saw the "that's the gayest thing I've seen" part and I immediately thought of like 10 different things Harry has done that's hella gay. Harry is a walking pride flag. 😤

Back after a long time...

For some reason I couldn't get my old account to work which was evopandawithalumpia. My last post on that account was 2016. When the site changed ownership and the NSFW stuff became banned my account got marked NSFW and I had issues making anything work anymore. I couldn't change anything, I wanted to change my icon for instance. The only solution I could think of was just deleting my account. I am not sure if I'll use this much since I am back at square one and I moved on to other social media. But since Twitter is imploding and I am not using Instagram much and Meta is imploding as well. Who knows?

After I deleted my account I should have at least saved the follower list to see if anyone is till around. I searched my old name and found one person. I thought I backed up my old account but I guess I might have just deleted it and/or never backed it up in the first place. There is still remnants of the site on the way back machine if anyone wanted to see what it looked like.

I think its gone forever which I think might be good as most of the posts were of me being hella emo going from one toxic relationship to the next. I don't need to reflect anymore on that pain but I will for this post just so people have context for my return.

I had substance abuse issues and went in relationships with people who wanted to keep me in the dark, they were ashamed of being with a trans woman. It fucked with my psyche at the time. I didn't have that much self worth back then I just wanted to be loved even if it was from people who didn't really respect me. I also was on a low dose of estrogen during most of my time on the site and I know that I was erratic because of it. I am now a bit more level headed now that I am back on a normal E range due to a lab error that finally got recognized years later.

One of things that changed since I last used this site was me quitting drinking(three and a half years sober) and try to stay away from hard drugs. You won't be seeing posts about me going to the club a bunch which was something I used to do often. I would say I am a lot less social than when I ran my old blog so you wont be seeing a bunch of party posts. I had a falling out with a lot of my old friends many of which I mostly just drank with and did drugs with. I stopped doing activism for the most part due to SD Trans Pride wanting cops for security and I wasn't about that. I am a bit more on that "Arm Trans Woman" vibes so I sticked to that side of the internet post my first Tumblr blog.

I also am single and haven't been in a relationship in a while. I don't really feel the need to get in a relationship and I am happy for the most part being single.

Some of my old best friends I have moved on from. One of them kicked me out of his house after I moved to his place, he then apologized and wanted me back but the damage was done. One of my good friends because a Q-Anon conspiracy person and after seeing some posts she liked that were trans-misogynistic I gave up on her.

If I do use this site I will likely use it as a diary again since I like just doing word vomit in general and I find it cathartic to share my feelings. Instagram/Reddit/Twitter aren't really good for long writtern format.

- the trio of nonwhite guys (they looked latine?) that were all dancing together, grinding on each other, and taking turns being the middle person of the dance-sandwich. every ~5 minutes they would lean in and all three-way kiss. it was immaculate and they were all v cute and i was jealous asf

- i went to my town's pride fest and saw someone in a super cute corset top. they were with their partner, and both of them were cute femme goths. i asked them where they got it, they turned to their partner, and went "baby where'd you get this from?" iconic. get you a partner that buys you lingerie omfg (it was from victoria's secret)

- my neighbors, a mixed wasian family (which is why i noted them in the first place lmao) were also at the pride fest w their kiddos decked out in hella rainbows. they also have been in to my work (i work at the queer center on campus) and complimented my sticker design :)

37. What instrument do I play?

Hella awkward if the first question someone asked and I had to answer was n/a... I play the piano. I'm decent, but insanely rusty. I actually HAVE a piano that is severely neglected. Maybe that will be my thing in 2023... 50. Name a book that you would cherish for a lifetime.

UGH SO HARD TO PICK because there are some that are so incredibly near and dear to me or that were formative or particularly nostalgic growing up... But I think I'm going to say The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis.

It's one of the first real chapter books I ever read (if not THE first). My mom and I read it together one summer, then after my dad passed away and we moved to a different state and were also so poor, mom surprised me with a paperback box set and we read the entire series together every night. I read it again many times myself when I was in elementary school, and then I read it again in my later teens and was old enough to be able to recognize the more complex themes. Plus it fed my imagination as a child and when I read it in my teens fed into how my brain started to play around with fan fiction.

I love the magic of Narnia. I love the Pevensies. I love Tumnus. I love the badgers. The White Witch was so terrifying. I loved the visit from Santa and reappearance of Christmas. I loved it from first to last page.

Also, I think it's something I will read to my children if I ever have them. Grandchildren, etc. 54. Who is your dream girl or dream guy working in film/tv and why? Is it too easy to say Sebastian Stan?

Actually I am going to say Emma Thompson.

She's had a career. She's done so much, worked on serious pieces, comedies, had fun. She's ridiculously talented. She also started DOING STUFF - like making stuff happen for herself - at a relatively young age in the industry, I feel like, ESPECIALLY as a woman. She writes, she directs, she produces, still acts... She is beautiful but in a way that has always felt like REAL beauty, not manufactured beauty.

Late Night gives her this range of reprehensible to redemption. Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Let's not even talk about how she brings me to tears in Love, Actually. SHE is the one who wrote the dialogue for Charlotte Lucas's speech to Lizzy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice that just...that made Charlotte a real character more than almost anything that's ever been portrayed about her.

And she's articulate and brilliant as hell - and she says exactly what she can and needs to in any situation. She's charming, but she'll also call people and/or society on its shit, and in an undeniable way because it's measured and correct.

Seriously if I could BE her in some ways - because I know I can't be her in every way. But wow. True icon.

9. What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

I worry about if I'm striking the proper balance between romanticizing and realistic. Yes we write fiction and it's fiction, but I don't want my males to come off as completely OOC from reality. I want even my most unrealistic characters (supernatural, villains, heroes, robots, whatever) to have something relatable that grounds them in humanity.
