Aglaia: I love you a lot. Hephaestus: I love you more. Aglaia: No Hephaestus: You're shorter than me so your love capacity isn't as strong as mine so it's physically impossible for you to love me more.

Aglaea : Just my love for you.

Is there anything in the classical texts that states Hephaestus and Aphrodite got divorced after her affair with Ares was discovered, or is that a presumption people have made to reconcile how Hephaestus is married to Aglaia in The Iliad but later married to Aphrodite in The Odyssey?
Hi! There is no myth or ancient greek text stating that Aphrodite and Hephaestus got a divorce, but many believe that the Iliad is implying it. At the start of the book we are told the story about Aphrodite and Hephaestus’ marriage and her infidelity, but towards the end Hephaestus is married to Aglaia and Aphrodite freely consorts with Ares.
In the Iliad, Hephaestus wants Zeus to give him back the betrothal gifts that he gave him. Here’s a quote explaining betrothal gifts in Mycenaen Greece: “The son-in-law and father-in-law became allies (ἔται, etai, "clansmen") through the exchange of gifts in preparation for the transfer of the bride. Gifts (δῶρα dora) signified the alliance between the two households. The exchange also showed that the girl's family was not simply selling her or rejecting her; the gifts formalized the legitimacy of a marriage.”
So by asking Zeus to give him the betrothal gifts back, Hephaestus is delegitimizing the marriage.
Plus, polygamy wasn’t common in ancient greece, so if Hephaestus and Aglaia are married then that implies that he must have terminated his previous union.

Aglaea: I make out with Hephaestus? He's fine. I kiss him on the nose? He's a mess. Aglaea: I slap his ass? Doesn't care. But if I hold his hand and kiss his knuckles? He's inconsolable. Aglaea: Why does simple affection break him? I do not know.

It’s interesting how Hera refuses to divorce Zeus no matter how much he cheats but the millisecond Hephaestus found out Aphrodite cheated he divorced her. Learning from your parents flaws and mistakes to heal generational trauma me thinks.

I think the reason why Ares x Aphrodite is portrayed not a healthy couple in modern media bec they dont have a lot of myths together??? They only myth they have is that golden net incident. And Aphrodite curse Eos for sleeping with Ares. And also where Ares turn into a boar and kill Adonis bec he is jealous (there are other version who kill Adonis, the other version is either Artemis or Apollo who kill adonis, or its just an ordinary boar who kill him). Or maybe they just assume since Ares is war so hes bad and mistreat Aphrodite 🫤 ...
Or I can be wrong do you know if they have other myths together aside from the one I mentioned above?? (I'm so sorry English is not my first language, I hope you understand what I mean).
I don't mind people who prefer Hephaestus x Aphrodite but I wish Hephaestus marriage with Aglaia - his 2nd wife - is more popular ☹️ Hephaestus is so much more happier with her and and they have 4 daughters. They are also one of my favorite greek myth couples together with Ares x Aphrodite and Dionysus x Aridane.
I like this approach!
Personally I thought that this toxicity was derived from the diversity of their natures. Most people don't think that Love and War can coexist in harmony, so they portray this couple in a bad light.
Afther reading your question I straightly went to look for other possible myths around these two, and to be honest I didn't find anything specific. I searched on theoi.com and I didn't land on anything different rather than those myths you referred above.
You made me question myself soldier🤭
But still, I disagree with the way both of them are depicted in modern tellings.
Hephaestus and Aglaia are soulmates! I believe that Aphrodite wasn't for him, she was more dedicated to Ares. But still, both Hephaestus and Aphrodite found happiness in the end.
Dionysus and Ariadne... What can I say? He took her under his protection after Theseus abandoned her. But still it was a trickery ever since Dionysus threatened Theseus to leave her, but imagine how much he wanted her if he did something like that☺️
Thanks for the question amd sorry for the late reply! 😅🤗

Aglaia: just how big is it? ;)
Hephaestus: uhhh, sizable?? *opens door to show massive Lego collection*
Aglaia: oh wait- you really were talking about Legos. that is pretty cool though *nods appreciatively*
Hephaestus: what did you think I meant?
Aglaia:
Aphrodite in the background: *cackles*

Hera and Zeus are married
Aphrodite and Ares are long term lovers, but not exclusive to each other
Demeter, Apollo and Hermes are not wed, but they had many lovers
Artemis, Hestia and Athena are maidens by oath
So five married. Three sworn to chastity. Two that are in a long (open?) relationship. Three single.
Four that have spouses that aren't Olympians

I will never understand those people who prefer to force Hephaistos and Aphrodite in a relationship no matter what, whether by villainising Ares and making Aphrodite chose Hephaistos, or by turning a forced marriage and a public infidelity scandal leading (sometimes) to divorce into a so-called "open relationship", instead of, Idk, exploring Hephaistos' marriage to Charis/Aglaia or maybe his family with Kabeiro and not pretending that making a woman love a man she never chose for herself or forcing someone to tolerate their spouse's infidelity when they are absolutely not fine with it in the source material is actually more progressive than two incompatible people breaking up and moving on from a bad marriage.
