Wellenore College AU
Fandom: Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Dinner Party (Web Series)
Pairing: Lenore the Lady Ghost x HG Wells
Summary: Lenore and HG meet in college. Fluff.
Ao3
Lenore ran down the nearly deserted hallway, slinging her bag over one arm as she checked the time on her phone in the other. Ugh, ten minutes late, and on the first day too. Not that she had been looking forward to this class – “Time Travel” – it had simply sounded the most interesting. Unfortunately, after glancing through the textbook which was currently weighing down her bag, it was a lot more theory and a lot less time travel. Also, a lot of math.
She skidded to a halt in front of the door, quickly fixing her appearance before quietly opening the door.
The lecture hall was empty.
“Are you serious?” she asked out loud.
From the other end of the hallway, a figure dashed her way. A backpack hung haphazardly off one arm, an old-fashioned looking pocket-watch in the other, and a pair of very steampunk-looking glasses about to fall from their perch on his black hair.
He almost stumbled as she stopped in front of her. “Hello,” he said nervously. “are you here for the time travel class as well?” A cute accent lilted his words.
“Well, yeah, but it looks like the room number’s changed.” Lenore sighed.
“Oh, dear,” mumbled the guy. “And I’m already late.”
“Well, whaddaya say, Goggles, shall we find the right room together?”
The guy looked at her as though really seeing her for the first time. She was very pretty, much prettier than the people he’d normally socialize with. She had copper skin and black hair and the way her dark eyes were looking at him expectantly made him feel like melting.
Wait, expectantly? Right, she had asked him a question.
“Yes, that would be… lovely,” he fidgeted with his pocket-watch for a moment before putting it in his pocket.
“I’ll check the rooms on the left, you can take the right,” she walked over to the nearest door and peeked through the window. “Do you know what the professor looks like?”
“Yes,” he said. “She has short grey hair and is rather fond of colourful scarves.” He checked the next classroom. “Although, she never wears white, says it’s not her colour.” He glanced at the white lacy dress Lenore was wearing and blushed slightly.
“Yeah, well, not everyone can pull it off,” she said nonchalantly, checking the next door. “How do you know all this about her?”
“I… I have read a lot of her work, at least, the less complex parts. She’s one of the best in the area of study.” He said this all very quickly, a little embarrassed.
Lenore turned and looked at him, her eyes filled with an intense curiosity. “You’re really into this time travel stuff then.”
“Why, yes.” He hesitated. “Aren’t you? I mean, isn’t that why you’re taking this class?”
“To be entirely honest, I needed the science credit and it sounded like the most interesting option. I’m a fashion major.” She prepared herself for the condescending Oh, that’s nice that she always got from the science or engineering students.
“Oh, how interesting,” he said. And he meant it. Lenore wasn’t one to brag – okay, maybe a little bit – but her character judgements were usually pretty good.
“I’m Lenore, by the way,” she said, holding out her hand to shake.
“H.G.” said the guy. As he reached out to shake her hand, his backpack slid down his arm and he quickly slung it over his shoulder again. He laughed nervously and shook her hand quickly.
“Just initials?” Lenore asked, smiling and tilting her head to the side.
“You would go by HG too if your full name was Herbert George Wells,” HG said.
Lenore laughed – but not unkindly – and HG blushed a little and thought that it was the most wonderful laugh he had ever heard.
They continued to look into classrooms and lecture halls, earning some odd looks from students and professors as they went. Lenore did most of the talking and HG listened intently, commenting thoughtfully every now and then.
“… and to be honest, I have no idea how Edgar and I ended up friends,” Lenore continued. “He’s all doom and gloom and prophetic ravens, but somehow we’ve just always clicked, you know?” She looked over at HG, who realized that he should probably respond.
“Yes, well, it does seem that sometimes the people that we are most compatible with, either platonically,” he paused for a moment, then continued, “or romantically, are the people with whom we do not share many interests. Of course, there must be some connection between the two, otherwise they would have nothing to talk about and may never even meet.”
“You’re so right,” Lenore said eagerly. “Take you and me, we’re in different programs in very different departments, but…” she smiled, gesturing around her. “we’re both lost on our way to the same class.”
HG nodded and couldn’t help but beam; Lenore had such an intensity about her, he felt energized just by being around her. He glanced into the next classroom and was dismayed to see that the professor standing at the front of the class had short grey hair and wore a bright blue scarf. As she turned to address the class, he was certain that this was the class they were supposed to be in. He glanced over at Lenore, who was already a few doors ahead of him. HG did not often make spontaneous decisions. He most certainly did not ever skip class. But there was something about this girl that made him want to change that. So, with a glance back into the classroom, he continued on.

Okay for the TV series thing (not actually saying any tv series because i dont think we watch any of the same, hope that's okay) : *drumroll* Poe Party, Harry Potter, Adventures of Serena Berg
Oh wow, so many! Thanks Hazel! :)
Poe Party:
my all-time ultimate fave character: Emily Dickinson
a character I didn’t used to like but now do: Lenore?
a character I used to like but now don’t: fandom has made me very very tired of HG Wells
a character I’m indifferent about: idk, Guy DeVere?
a character who deserved better: everyone who died
a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Wellenore
a ship I’ve never been able to get over: Emily Dickinson/George Eliot
a cute, low-key ship: Annabel Lee/Edgar Allan Poe
an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: Lenore/Annabel Lee MY GIRLS
a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: George Eliot/Oscar Wilde or George Eliot/Ernest Hemingway. They’re all just bros and George likes girls ok ok
my favourite storyline/moment: honestly I love that the reasons for the murder spree were (SPOILERS). Like such iconic classic lit debates of course they’d be the murder motives lol
a storyline that never should have been written: I just wish the ending wasn’t so sad. also killing off so many POC isn’t great
my first thoughts on the show: yesss more shipwrecked!
my thoughts now: what a solid and enjoyable show I really liked it overall
Harry Potter:
my all-time ultimate fave character: Hermione Granger
a character I didn’t used to like but now do: Lavender Brown (my personal struggle with internalized misogyny as a young teen was directly reflected in the changing of my perspective on her tbh)
a character I used to like but now don’t: tbh Dumbledore (#problematic)
a character I’m indifferent about: Theodore Nott. Why did so many people make fanworks about him? I’m????
a character who deserved better: Nymphadora Tonks deserved a long life and a cute girlfriend let’s be real
a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Wolfstar, like I like them but I’ve never been very enthusiastic about it
a ship I’ve never been able to get over: Ron/Hermione!
a cute, low-key ship: Ginny x Luna and also Dean x Seamus
an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: I once read an excellent Petunia Dursley/Hestia Jones DH fic
a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: Dramione, and also anything shipping any of the Trio with Snape or Voldemort
my favourite storyline/moment: I think it’s impossible to pick one favorite storyline or moment from the entirety of Harry Potter. Like, my favorite harry potter storyline is all of harry potter.
a storyline that never should have been written: Cursed Child. Just the entirety of Cursed Child.
my first thoughts on the series: “Hi I’m seven years old and the basilisk is scary therefore I hate everything to do with Harry Potter and will never read or watch it ever.”
my thoughts now: this story is so much a part of me that i couldn’t explain my love for it if I tried. It’s like coming home and wrapping yourself in a warm blanket and eating chocolate until all the dementors vanish.
Adventures of Serena Berg:
my all-time ultimate fave character: probably Serena, she’s such a complex fascinating frustrating yet lovable character
a character I didn’t used to like but now do: Rags grew on me a lot
a character I used to like but now don’t: idk
a character I’m indifferent about: Rosie and Eddie whoever?
a character who deserved better: Roxanne Roberts deserves the world
a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Roxanne/Chris
a ship I’ve never been able to get over: Serena/Roxanne
a cute, low-key ship: honestly Roxanne/Deena
an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: I don’t know, maybe me lowkey shipping Deena with myself because she’s a badass bisexual queen who could take me to parties and teach me to socialize and it would be adorable
a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: Roxanne/Tony, thank goodness it would never ever happen
my favourite storyline/moment: I love all the moments when all the girls are just hanging out and talking and supporting each other, honestly friendship goals
a storyline that never should have been written: I’m a little confused about what the Rags/Lissa plotline ever had to do with anything? but it does give some good character-building for lots of characters I guess
my first thoughts on the show: omg Shawna and Elizabeth made a webseries! I’m so proud of them! I cannot wait to support them and watch every episode!
my thoughts now: I love everything about this show but am always wary of new episodes because they’re probably angst galore

Well, Lenore Part II
The staff at Montecristo Hotel had never seen such a gathering. The waiters swapped rumors about the things they’d overheard the guests saying.
“I heard a woman ask when George Eliot would be arriving,” said Clayton, hanging up a coat. “George Eliot. Like the writer?“
“That is ridiculous,” said Sinéad. “And besides, George Eliot wasn’t even her real name. It was Mary Ann.”
“What!?” cried Clayton.
“I heard one guy say, ‘Edgar Allen Poe should be here any minute,’” said Ashley, who’d been scouting for juicy gossip all morning. “Do you think they mean—”
“Of course not, Ashley,” Joey snapped. “Edgar Allen Poe has been dead for centuries.”
“Actually, he died in the 1800s,” said Mary Kate, polishing a glass behind the bar. “So it’s only been about a hundred and fifty years.”
“So, a century and a half,” said Joey impatiently. “Either way, there’s no way he’s alive now. So get back to work before Sean comes back and yells at us.”
In the lobby, several dead writers had gathered. There was an emergency.
“I heard H.G. hasn’t written his vows,” said Ernest Hemingway. He took a swig from a drink nobody saw him get. “What a shame. Lenore’ll have a fit, I’ll bet anybody $50.”
“Good! I could use your $50 to buy a new shirt,” said Oscar Wilde, looking down at his outfit. Ernest humphed and took a swig from a different drink that probably wasn’t his.
Annabel Lee sat in a chair by the door, looking worried. Emily Dickinson stood nearby, waiting for someone to say something to her. Mary Shelley broke the silence between them after drinking the dregs of her wine.
“Well are we going to just sit here like a couple of ingrates?” she said. “Surely one of us could help H.G. with his vows.”
“I’m sure he’ll think of something,” said Annabel. “I hope.”
“I agree,” said Emily, but nobody seemed to hear her.
“Well, what can we do in the meantime?” asked Ernest. “I’m not just going to sit here like some Himalayan sloth. The wedding is supposed to start any minute!”
“Perhaps we could stall,” said Annabel, standing with the force of her new idea.
“Stall?” said Oscar. “But what do you expect us to do?”
“Perhaps if we all took turns talking about H.G. and Lenore,” she said. “We could keep the other guests entertained until H.G. finishes writing his vows.”
“We could talk about funny stories!” cried Emily.
“Oh, I have an idea!” said Mary. “We could tell funny stories about Lenore and H.G.. Funny stories are quite a lot like eulogies, you know, and I am—"
“We know,“ everyone present said in unison. Clayton, who was just taking George Eliot’s overcoat, heard the whole exchange and wondered what the end of the sentence would be.
“Who is ready to watch H.G. finally tie the knot?” asked George as she entered. Oscar cried a greeting, but otherwise nobody else was moved because just then the man in question had entered the lobby.
His— friends?— gathered around him, all talking at once and demanding to know what was going on.
“Just a minute,” said H.G., pushing through the small crowd. The writers fell silent, watching.
In the center of the lobby stood a small podium, with an enormous leather-bound book opened to a scrawled-on page. He approached it almost reverently, and began to flip through the pages quietly.
“What’s he doing?” asked Emily. Nobody answered. Emily sighed and walked over to H.G. She watched him for a moment, and noticed he was tracing his fingers across certain phrases. The book contained hundreds of strangers’ stories about how they met their spouse or details of their wedding that had taken place at the hotel. H.G.’s hands brushed across the glossy pages, quietly but desperately searching.
“What are you looking for?” asked Emily.
“Nothing,” said H.G., without looking up. “Merely… inspiration.”
My hubby David and I worked the night shifts together at the Montecristo for six years before we tied the knot. Whitney, June 17th, 2002. Lauren was a guest here for one magical night, but I have never forgotten her face. Lauren, if you ever come back: 770-909-8877. — Jim I first knew I loved Ryan when he took my hand without any warning and started serenading me in this lobby, fifty years ago today. Jessica & Ryan, March 28th, 1998
H.G.’s eyes skimmed the summaries of strangers’ love lives. He was looking for a formula that connected all of the professions of love he read, so he could apply the formula to his vows.
But he couldn’t find anything. Nothing linked these mini-stories. Nothing was common among them.
He murmured under his breath, and his hands flew faster and faster through the pages, scanning lines feverishly.
Then, a name caught his eye.
Guy and I are getting married here today!! xoxo, Lenore
H.G. stopped dead. The room seemed to fall away from him.
If you could time travel to any point, when would it be? she had once asked him.
To your wedding day, he’d said.
What? Why? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I looked hella fab that day, but I look the same now.
So I could save you, he’d said. Lenore had been speechless.
But if you’d saved me, she’d said, we wouldn’t have met.
“We wouldn’t have met,” said H.G. aloud.
“What was that, old sport?” said Ernest. He tried to clap a hand on H.G.’s shoulder, but it went straight through him.
“We w-wouldn’t have met if Lenore hadn’t died,” said H.G., in a daze. Ernest raised an eyebrow, and took a flask from his coat.
“Kind of macabre to think about on your wedding day,” he said before taking a long drag from the flask.
H.G. began to speak very fast. “At first when I saw this, my first instinct was to use time travel to visit Guy and ask him for advice—”
“Odd,” muttered Ernest. “Get to the point.”
“—and I realize if I were to time travel, I’d just save Lenore but that would be problematic for the space-time continuum—"
“Good God man, get to your point!”
“I’ve found an idea for my vows,“ H.G. said, rubbing his hands together.
Ernest stared at H.G. mid-swig.
“Go, old sport,” he said, leaning on H.G and nearly falling through him. “Go and write your truth, my friend.”
In the ballroom, George Eliot told a story to the crowd of waiting guests and an increasingly impatient Lenore.
“The first time I met this ghost over here,” said George, gesturing with her champagne glass. “She mistook me for a damsel! Me!”
She paused for the smattering of weak laughter.
“I, being a gentleman, gently and manly set her straighter than I am and asked to see the billiard room should she need proof!”
“Mary Ann, we all know you’re a woman,” said Lenore. “You let me borrow your face moisturizer two days ago. And it’s fab, btw.”
“That’s because you’re using that exfoliator I recommended,” said George. She caught herself. “I-I mean, I’m not sure what you mean! I shave every day, that’s why my skin is so…soft and luxurious.”
There was an awkward pause. Oscar stood and applauded, signaling to George that her turn was over. The guests and ghosts clapped lightly and Emily Dickinson took the stage.
“Um. Hi,” she said. “I’m Emily Dickinson. And I wrote a poem for Lenore on her special day.”
Lenore smiled thinly and gulped the nearest glass of wine. Bloody Mary exclaimed in protest, but Lenore held up a finger to stop her. Emily began to read.
Nobody heard what she said, however. Because as soon as Emily began to start, the doors opened with a bang! and in walked none other than Charlotte Brontë, her arms crossed and scowling.
“Sorry I’m late,” she said. “It’s such a nice day for a white wedding.”
