I don’t quite know what’s going on here, but what I do know is that this probably the most New York City picture I’ve ever seen. Grandpa’s the third guy up from the bottom, with the rest of his crew. We’re not entirely sure what block this is on, but we know Grandpa grew up on the Lower East Side...especially if that’s the Williamsburg Bridge in the background (and if anyone has any further info, we’d love to hear it!) #vintage #nyc #newyork #lowereastside #nychistory #myfamily #historicnewyork

A magnificent example of Justus Danckerts' 1690 Novi Belgii or map of New York, New England, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Some call this the 'farm animal map' for its novel incorporation of farm animals, ranging from horses and cows to chicken and sheep, in its decoration – a propaganda embellishment unique to Danckerts' editions. It is considered the final map of the Jansson-Visscher Series, although there is some reason to cast doubt on this assumption. Some scholars suggest that this map was first produced in 1655, predating the Visscher map, while others, most notably Philip Burden, argue that it was most likely first issued in 1673 to capitalize on general interested associated with the Dutch recapture of New York in that same year. The failure of the Danckerts clan to date either their maps or atlases only contributes to this confusion. Like most maps in the Jansson-Visscher Series, the basic cartography here dates to the Jansson map of 1651. It covers from the St. Lawrence River to the Mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and from the Susquehanna River to the Penobscot River, incorporating in the process most of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. This edition features a number of important updates and revisions over the Visscher maps. The Delaware River is now fully redrawn such that it correctly does not connect to the Hudson – a common misconception in early maps. Pennsylvania is at last properly named. https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/novibelgii-danckerts-1690 #geographicus #raremap #raremaps #antiquemaps #antiquemap #visscher #newyorkmap #newyorkmaps #newyorkcity #historicnewyork (at Geographicus Rare Antique Maps)

One of the prettiest houses I have seen in recent times is 17 Grove Street, one of the few wood-frame houses left in NYC that is referred to as “that wooden house on the corner.” Wooden structures were outlawed in 1866 in NYC because of fire laws following a series of massive fires in Manhattan 1776, 1835 and 1845. During the Great Depression, the Great Fire of 1835 wiped out much of lower Manhattan. . William Hyde was a window sash maker in 1822 when he built his two-story home and his quaint wooden workshop behind it. Both are still intact! In 1870 the third floor was added. The house was a private residence then a tea room and now a residence again. During the Civil War, the home was said to have served as a brothel. In 1987 the house was purchased for $1.1 million and beautifully restored as a private home again.  Grove Street is only a span of five blocks and has had several names changes through the years: Columbia Street was first then Cozine Street (after a respected family living in the area) then Burrows Street (named for early 19th century Naval war hero William Burrows) and now Grove Street due to the abundant greenery in the area. #17grovestreet #historicnewyork .
