Re: Winged Lion fulfilling Laios' desires + "Marcille will no longer have to be alone"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout the lion's persuasion, Laios has been acting reluctant / defensive / angry / embarrassed. He tells the lion that his desires of having monsters attack a village was a foolish childhood fantasy. Concerning Falin, the lion tells him he's being a hypocrite because he's wishing for a peaceful world and they can't revive Falin without magic, then the lion says they'll move onto more cheerful topics and digs into Laios' "true" subconscious desire to become a monster (reflected in the succubus chapter).
Laios is clearly uncomfortable but the lion continues digging in. The lion mentions Laios' own desires of becoming a monster, loving monsters, desires that define Laios as a person, and almost glosses over his will to revive Falin? Because we all know he loves his sister and wants to save her. It's a noble and sympathetic act. But turning in a monster and potentially terrorizing or at least scaring people? Just because he wants to? To make up for his lack of social tact and his seeming distaste for humankind? That's not noble. So naturally Laios clings onto his goal of saving Falin (evident in the scene when the lion curses him and Laios immediately thinks of Falin), and just as naturally, the lion wants to uncover that and make him confront his "true" desire.
Laios loves his friends and his party, but I think the lion isn't granting them full livelihoods out of pure selflessness on Laios' behalf. Because his party, despite everything, accepts him. They cook with him, they journey with him to save Falin, they trust him, they support him. In the dungeon, Laios' monster knowledge is respected and valued by his friends. Right before the confrontation with the lion, Laios gives each of his party members something to do, in particular telling Izutsumi to kill him. This is probably because of her skills and the fact that he's known Izutsumi the least (and they're less close compared to, let's say, Izutsumi and Marcille). But regardless of how long he's known them, he trusts them. He feels comfortable and confident around them. He feels supported. He knows his friends will do what he told them to do. And in a world in which Laios struggles to navigate due to his social skills, his companions are very precious to him. The party is aware of Laios' shortcomings but they follow and love him anyway. Keeping them unharmed is a noble act, but also selfish, because Laios likes being accepted and cared for.
Keeping the party safe is a vague concept, but then the lion goes for the kill— Marcille's lifespan.
And you can see Laios' expression instantly changes. There's a whole panel of his face. Previously, he's been uncomfortable and defensive. Even when the lion points out his "embarrassing" and "selfish" desire to be a monster, he's not as affected as he is. Now, he's shaken. He twitches. He knows something inside him just wavered. And the lion pounces on it.
Regarding why Laios wants Marcille to not be lonely, I have some thoughts:
Sympathy
Laios is the one who saw Marcille's nightmare and knows acutely what she fears. She lost Falin and was traumatised because of it. The whole party got killed and she was also traumatised. And Laios probably thinks it's his duty as a friend, party leader, and someone who saw into her nightmare to protect her and make her happy. Falin might never come back and maybe Marcille's already lost a loved one, and Laios doesn't want that to happen again even though it inevitably will.
2. Marcille's time as a dungeon lord
Laios' argument against lord Marcille is that she can't force everyone to eat from the same menu and not everyone wants to live that long. This might be a translation issue, but the lion doesn't say it's going to extend everyone's lifespans. No, it focuses on Marcille herself and says "Marcille will no longer have to be alone". Not "everyone will live as long as Marcille" or "Marcille will live as long as everyone else". It's not about ages, it's how Marcille feels. Which is something Laios obviously cares about.
Lord Marcille was unable to fulfill her desires. What if Laios does it for her, in a kind of "two in one" demon deal? Logistically, in order for the party to keep Marcille company, they'll have to live as long as she does (note the 999 years), or as the lion says, make up a fake version of themselves to keep her company. It might not be real, and with a bit of thinking, this dream crumbles, but the lion deviously targets the emotions and it overshadows rational thought. What if it's impossible to keep Marcille company for as long as she lives? Maybe the lion will magically make it work. Just maybe. And Laios holds onto this shred of hope.
3. Solidarity of being alone
Marcille, Laios, and Falin all experienced loneliness / feeling outcasted growing up. During the nightmare sequence, Laios says Marcille is different from him because her dream takes place in a library to show how hardworking she is. But ultimately, they are people who don't like being alone. Marcille warms up to eating monsters and accepts Laios for who he is. Laios rescues Marcille from the nightmare and the lion. They are each other's comfort zones and they keep each other company.
Laios doesn't want to be alone, hence the lion offering to save his friends. And he doesn't want Marcille to be alone, because he cares for her, and she's just like him in that regard.
Mentioning Marcille's feelings is what tips Laios over the edge. He isn't embarrassed or angry, he's frozen to the ground, shaken and persuaded. Arguably, saving Marcille is also a "noble" goal in the way saving Falin is a noble goal, but I think L+M has developed so far that saving her will feel like saving him because they both just want someone to keep them company (especially with the context of having lost Falin, who keeps them company and loves them for who they are).
Before all of this, Laios trusts Marcille with his precious gourmet guide. It's his hint that he's turned into his ideal monster, but the fact that he's given the embodiment of his dreams and desires to her shows how much he trusts her and feels comfortable around her. And it's Marcille who passes the guide around their friends as they all realise the monster is Laios. Even as a monster, Laios is recognised, his friends cheer for him, they want to save him.
I don't think I've seen anyone talk about this before, but later, Marcille tries using her summoned serpent / monster to eat monster Laios. (Like how she used it to eat her friends when she was a lord.) And Marcille's monster actually swallows Laios. But then Laios claws open its stomach and breaks free. Consumption is a form of love and salvation. I liked seeing their different monsters: Marcille's being a sleek serpent with flower motifs, kind of resembling her sky fish familiar that she used to rescue Senshi and Laios' almost chaotic chimera full of bits and pieces he picked up and carefully selected (including the scylla head he picked from the succubus). Marcille tries to save Laios by using her monster to eat him. They all save Falin by eating her monster parts. Even though initially Marcille was the one most picky about eating monsters, in the end she summons her own familiars and monsters and engages in her own way of creation / consumption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after all of this, it's Marcille who finds human Laios first. She doesn't berate him or anything, just treats him normally, tells him everyone is waiting for him. Because they accept each other and keep each other company. That's one of their core desires. Their character arcs intertwine and in the end they live together. Neither of them will have to be alone.

I think the reason Charles never refers to Hawkeye by his name is because it’s a nickname, because he’ll call BJ, Margaret, and Klinger by their names without issue, and I could write up an entire post about Charles’ approach to names and nicknames and I might come back and do that tomorrow when it’s not so late
For now I just want to make the point that there’s a scenario in my head where Charles tried one (1) time to call Hawkeye Benjamin in casual conversation and the entire conversation ground to a halt because they both got incredibly uncomfortable about it because it sounded so WRONG and they agreed to never talk about it again

What's your take on the way Gojo dresses after being unsealed? Other than the fact the after he changed outfit he got killed, so maybe he shouldn't have done that...also, merry Christmas/have a happy Monday!
happy holidays! hope you're well :)
gojo's outfits can be tied to his emotional arc. i know you asked specifically of his outfits after being unsealed but i think context is needed to see where i'm coming from.
when we first meet gojo in jjk0, his outfit is oversized and his eyes are covered— it hardly gives away his body language, or any emotions he's feeling, really, unless he's being particularly boisterous.
which sort of makes him an enigma to his students who haven't been in jujutsu society as long as he has; who don't know him or his past. the scene where he goes from sunglasses and casual clothes (when he meets the higher-ups) to bandages and uniform (when he goes to meet his students) comes to mind.
Tumblr media
while the bandages within the world of jujutsu kaisen maybe simply serve the purpose of relieving the strain in gojo's eyes. on a meta level, they also hide a lot. the eyes are the window to the soul after all. a lot of cultures believe this— japanese included, though it seems that the idiom goes, "the eyes are the mirror of the heart" instead.
Tumblr media
which is ofc why they're completely uncovered when gojo meets geto at the end of jjk0. and also why, framing-wise gege distances the reader from the scene. we only see the back of gojo's head in the manga when he says the words that fluster geto. in the anime adaptation, we only see his lips. his eyes aren't shown to us (only geto sees them then), creating the sense that we're kind of intruding.
this all leads me to believe that gojo's eyes being covered is strongly tied to the masking or suppression of his emotions. his blindfold later in the series serves the same purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so when gege decided to depict gojo with his hand over his eyes instead of a blindfold (precisely after having him mention his "dream")— gege probably wanted gojo to be perceived as someone that is both honest and yet still omitting some information. specifically about where his "dream" stems from (his blue spring/geto). it's worth mentioning that his jacket is uncharacteristically zipped down a little too (chapter 11, p. 2).
as for his youth, gojo sported glasses most of the time. it seems to represent his haughty attitude? him speaking his mind brazenly. since he can easily tilt his head or remove his glasses to show his eyes. as an adult, he uses them when he spoke to the higher-ups as i meantioned before in jjk0, during the baseball game he proposed for the students' sake, and in megumi's flashback (and some other minor instances).
Tumblr media
so overwhelmingly, at this point, it seems like gojo doesn't sport eye coverings at all in (1) serious battle, or (2) when he's confronting geto emotionally (when he seeks him out) or being confronted by his feelings surrounding geto (when he hears about what he's done). gojo's clothing is also overwhelmingly loose. he doesn't ever show much skin, and he mostly wears long sleeves. especially as an adult.
i want to say everything shifts after shibuya, where he's confronted with himself (and his past); the feelings that he's repressed. (remember the eyes are the mirror of the heart?)
Tumblr media
so when he's eventually freed from the prison realm, his uniform jacket is torn to pieces and he's not wearing his blindfold over his eyes (that we know for a fact he had with him when he was sealed).
Tumblr media
something that stands out to me too, is how he doesn't ever cover his eyes again after this. also how the first thing he chooses to see is geto's body. as if he is no longer suppressing the truth. he is bearing his heart to the world; he goes on to be extremely sincere to many people. my favorite example being his conversation with ijichi.
later, in shinjuku, during what is essentially a ceremony of jujutsu to determine who is the challenger (him or sukuna), gojo dons traditional robes. i think this is purely because of the context. worth noting, gakuganji and utahime who represent kyoto, otherwise known as "jujutsu's sacred land" are also present.
Tumblr media
gojo quickly disposes of the robes once the pleasantries are out of the way,
Tumblr media
and basically goes on to shine as himself to the very end, until we're shown his face more intimately than we have ever seen it before—
Tumblr media
(right after we see him encounter his blue spring/geto again, and he tells geto everything about his fight as well as how he always wanted him by his side).

heavily recommend seeing Luca in theaters more than once (if able). I went again today, and it was SO MUCH BETTER the second time around. The prospect of Holy Shit It’s Happening It’s Finally Happening had worn off & it was easier to actually pay attention to the movie, rather than being distracted by the excitement surrounding fact that It’s Happening

okokok do you ever think about how declan was supposed to find niall's body right. do you think he was guilty that ronan had to see it? do you think that some part of him was glad in some guilty way that ronan found it and wasn't quite so innocent anymore? does he feel a slight weight lift off his shoulders, if only for a moment? (and is this when the nature of ronan's dreams changed, from childhood innocence and whimsy to darker and bloodier things?)

Here's how the Zoey 102 movie is gonna go. I would literally bet money on this.
Quinn and Logan are super rich and successful/possibly famous in some way. Because, I mean, his money? Her brains? They were bound to be! Anyway, because of this Logan proposes to Quinn publicly and they're expected to have this over the top wedding (complete with multiple events, statues that get destroyed by Zoey's "boyfriend" with that car, and headsets for some reason?).
So Quinn asks Zoey to be her maid of honor and Zoey accepts, but she's worried about all of the events because Chase will be there. To prepare for this, she hires an actor to play her boyfriend. Chase is also nervous, so he also hires someone to play his girlfriend. Because duh! If Zoey's nervous, then Chase must be crawling out of his skin!
Anyway, everyone from PCA gets together and has a good time. They remember old days and what not. Stacy and Mark are together for some reason. (Guess they hooked up at Prom after he hit her with Michael's car?) In doing all of this, Quinn starts to realize that she misses being this way. She wants to be more down to earth, less lavish. And of course she will wait until the day of her wedding to do anything about it!
This also gives Chase and Zoey plenty of time to exchange longing looks.
So we get to the wedding. It's ass. Quinn leaves, not because she doesn't love Logan, but because she doesn't like the theatrics. I don't think Zoey and Chase will decide to use the venue for themselves Mamma Mia style (maybe Mark and Stacy will bc fuck a marriage license ig?💀) since we see them talking at the beach after, but I do think this will give them more time to reflect and decide to get together. I also think this is when they will reveal that they both had the same fake partner plan.
After Quinn leaves, Logan decides to propose to her again but in a way that is much more toned down. Only close friends are there this time around. I believe there are two proposals because 1. Zoey found out about their engagement over the phone. How could she been there, standing behind Quinn, if there aren't two separate proposals? 2. Logan is holding a tie in his hand when he proposes. Throughout the entirety of the trailer, he wears a suit and tie (even at the bar. Bleh!). Taking the tie off to propose is symbolic. It's him trying to meet Quinn where she's at.
As you can see in the trailer, Quinn says yes. They actually get married, everyone dances, and they live happily ever after. THE END.

Origami doodle! idk the further I get into prime defenders the more intrigued I am by this guy. The big switch from nervous museum man to acting alcoholic caught me off guard for sure in the newer episodes
the more I think about it the more I think about how so many people In prime don’t really have that Dakota cole-esque hero mentality. With Jason, he was just a guy. But since he was one of the only three heroes emerging, it’s probably impossible to back down from the responsibility. In retrospect it makes sense that the hero life can easily be too much for people, so Jason falls back on what’s familiar but sort of coincides with being a hero (acting), and stress makes most people let go of higher ideals
If you have powers you’re always expected to use them for the greater good, regardless of your own thoughts on the matter
(it’s interesting how different he turned out from ms g and Harlem)
he’s sort of like William! Big power, which becomes too big to handle to the point you just want to be some guy again
Anyways I just think he’s neat

> Someone remind me to elaborate on how I want to characterize Kirby later
:) ? I'm curious now
Like I said on the post that prompted this, he's a nice silly boy who's also the strongest being in the known universe. He's pretty emotionally mature for his age and always wants to help people out. Kirby radiates positivity to everyone around him. He's the kind of person that makes a really great friend.
He loves simple pleasurable things, like eating and sleeping and playing. When he's not saving the world, he's out somewhere enjoying himself, probably with a buddy.
His life isn't perfect. He's unsure of himself and doubts if he deserves everything he's got. He feels guilty for not always being able to save everyone, regardless if that's even possible. He loses his patience sometimes, most often with people like Marx or Magolor who like to push his buttons. He struggles with identifying and dealing with his feelings, especially negative ones.
When he feels bad, though, his friends have his back. They care about him a lot, especially his closest friends like Bandana Waddle Dee and Gooey.

this might completely be nothing…
but isn’t it so interesting that we never see buck and eddie sitting across from each other? like for buck, it’s always with his dates that he sits across from them and eddie until this episode was the same (but we know he’s over-correcting for something)
so like them sitting next to each other instead of across because they are partners - it’s so different than how other relationships (romantic and platonic) are blocked in the show, they are a steady presence in each other’s lives that they don’t need to look to know that they are beside each other

Im not sure of anyone's pointed this out before but the language used in the Boiling Isles is weird. Specifically the fact they have and use words like "witch" and "demon"
It's strange that they use this human terminology, words that are very Christian in origin, in order to refer to themselves, and it gets even weirder when you think about what those words actually mean in the Boiling Isles. For example:
Tumblr media
Willow is a Witch. She's a person with humanoid appearance and sentience, who possesses the innate ability to do magic that comes from bile sac attached to her heart.
Tumblr media
Hooty is a demon, he's a creature, with a very different physical structure to a human. He cannot do magic as he has no bile sac, however he has the same amount of consciousness and sentience as Willow.
Those seem like very easy, cut and dry definitions right? Wrong. Look at characters such as Eileen.
Tumblr media
Eileen is a person, she has full sentience and a (mostly) humanoid appearance, as well as the bile sac which gives her the ability to do magic, she is studying at hexside, along with Willow, however she is referred to as a demon.
There's no real pattern, no scientific way of absolutely concluding what group an individual would belong to. It seems to be at least somewhat based in outward appearance, more human-like characters are witches and everything else is a demon, but other than that there's no proper biological or philosophical system. Some demons have bile sacs and human intelligence, but aren't considered "witches", and others are basically animals.
It's also weird that a colloquial term for the Boiling Isles is "the demon realm", when it seems to be mostly populated by witches.
The point of all this, was to get to the root of why these words are used on the Boiling Isles when they seem to virtually have no real meaning. My theory? Belos.
I think that it's more than likely that Phillip, upon coming to the Boiling Isles, assigned labels from his Puritan understanding of the world to the people and creatures he met. The people who look human but are practicing magic? Those are witches. The strange, otherworldly creatures, some of whom can also practise magic? Those are demons. This place must be Hell or some other demonic realm, etc.
As he rose to power, these words began to enter common terminology, the Emperor used them, so everybody else began to as well. This also applies to the idea of "Covens". Belos' system is likely called that because it was the term used by Puritans to refer to a group of witches.
Basically, I think that the reason the Boiling Isles share so many human world terms related to things like witchcraft, is because Belos popularised those words and ideas when he took over. This is also the reason the categorisation between a witch and a demon seems to be almost entirely based on appearance and not much else.

I personally kinda hate how Zadr fics will have Dib date Gretchen, Zita, etc. And not mention how much he dislikes how blind they are to Zim, its shown that Dib doesn’t like people who believe Zim.
And Dib respects Zim in intelligence, its implied that he almost views him as equal (and shown with Zim as well)
I’m not saying that Dib wouldn’t get with anyone at his skool, but either he would have to change or they would have to.

So I’m thinking about how Alberto is an optimist and it’s kind of making me cry a little.
First, Alberto was made to be complimentary to Luca (or, his opposite). Luca starts out pessimistic - he’s anxious, worried, frantic, and always assuming everything is going to go wrong. Alberto, on the other hand, believes that everything is going to be fine. Everything is going to work out smoothly with time.
Which is kind of 2D. At their core, optimism and pessimism are two-dimensional characteristics that give you very basic characters, and while Luca’s pessimism might be kind of basic, Alberto’s optimism is not. Because when you apply optimism to a character like Alberto, a whole world of depth opens up.
Stripping away his personality for a moment and just looking at his story alone -- he’s gone through a lot. He’s removed from society, deemed as bad, freak, weirdo, mess-up, etc. for an interest he can’t entirely control by all those around him, including Luca. (See: “Of course [it’s my first time on the surface]! I’m a good kid!”) We don’t know where his mother is, but she isn’t around, and he is left in the hands of his father, who is implied to be negligent and verbally abusive until he was abandoned as a preteen. He survived over a year on his own - again, as a thirteen-year-old boy - with not a single person to give him a good word.
Alberto has Every. Single. Right to be a pessimist, yet he is not. And oftentimes when you see an optimistic character like him that has gone through lodes and lodes or horrible shit, their optimism is often chalked up (either contextually or explicitly) as the thing that keeps them going, but this time it doesn’t.
Or, it does, but not always, because Alberto’s steadfast optimism is a flaw. It hurts him and the people around him over and over again, both before, during, and after the movie.
In the movie, as he threw himself into the waters so Luca could see that he has no chance among the humans - that is also an act of optimism. He did not see how it could backfire. He did not see that Luca could betray him. He did not see that he could get hurt, because he was sure everything would go over in his favor. That is optimism at play, being a knife (or harpoon) in his side, though it isn’t quite the best example of it.
The perfect example of this is, in my opinion, revealed in the tower scene when he uncovers the fact that he’s been abused and abandoned by his biological father. He counted for three-hundred and eighty-three days. He waited, hopeful, optimistic in his father’s return. In each of the tallies, there was optimism at play. It goes into the “if you never hope, you can never be let down” idea, and Alberto was let down.
Hard.
But then again, what could have happened if he had not looked for him? What could have happened to him if he had not hoped for his father to return, and turned to pessimism much quicker? He was completely alone - there was no one to turn to. There was nothing he could hold on to.
Though optimism might cause him a great deal of misery, it just might have been necessary for his survival.
So in short: His optimism serves the purpose of not only his greatest lifeline, but also his greatest bane. What a character

I hope this is coherent! I’ve been thinking of winter celebrations more and more from an anthropological? view I guess, and like how it is kinda really important to have them because winter is a really sucky time (kinda like how everyone enjoys summer because it’s associated with the break time you get as a kid and the actual season itself is too hot, too sweaty, too annoying)
Idk, I have to take two buses to get to home, and my transfer is at a layover station, and that bus I’m waiting for only comes once an hour and so sometimes if my previous bus gets delayed I have to wait there for an entire hour because I missed it by minutes and it sucks, there’s no restroom, the benches aren’t comfortable, it’s cold, the train is so loud, and the sky gets gray and dark really quickly and it’d actually be terrifying waiting there because of it
But the whole area is decorated with lights for the season, so there’s a sense of fun to it, and then I’m not thinking of it, I look at them and start thinking of winter break coming up and holiday parties and getting some hot cocoa, it’s just that winter can be such a dreary time so it’s important that there’s a focus to make it not so dreary
And that’s not even bringing up the work of the community during this time and making the emphasis on people getting in contact with loved ones so they’re not by themselves during this time
And yeah sometimes the stuff that’s supposed to make this season fun actually makes it worse for people (holiday stress, family drama, makes some people feel more alone, alienating to people who don’t celebrate the holiday that’s most common in the area they’re in, etc) but I think a lot of us can agree that it’s still important to try and celebrate something in this season, right?
Anyways the whole point of this post and what my thoughts have been turning to lately is aliens realizing that it’s important for Humans to have celebrations so they try to throw their Human crewmates winter parties, and what that would look like
(current thoughts is that it accidentally becomes a sorta campfire party where there’s a ton of hot drinks like tea and cocoa and everyone huddles for warmth by bright lights and tell each other exciting stories to get their spirits up which just turns into telling horror and horror parody stories)
