What do you think about the possibility of El and Will not being exactly twins but half siblings? Maybe Lonnie was in the MK Ultra project for money and had an affair with Terry Ivis, so El was born. His sperm was affected, and Lonnie had another child with Joyce, who was born with repressed/hidden powers (I'm considering Jonathan was already born when Lonnie's balls were chernobyl'd). Then Lonnie took Will to the Lab a feel times for test, but they concluded he was born powerless, because he appeared to be a normal kid.
Upon coming across twelvegate, I did initially go down this rabbit hole! I made a shit-post about the possibility of Lonnie being both Will and El's dad, but more recently I've expanded on that evidence in an ask, discussing why I basically don't think that is the case anymore.
The main thing that makes me so confident about this, is that I'm certain Terry isn't El's 'mama'. Like pretty much 100% certain.
There are a few posts where I discuss this (here, here, here) so definitely check those out if you want a deep dive to better understand where I'm coming from with that claim.
To be fair, I did not subscribe to this up until recently. It was as if my brain blocked me from even merely considering the possibility that Terry isn’t El's mom because of how tragic her whole situation was. And so it felt almost insensitive to even speculate, I guess?
But as of now, after actually going back and watching her scenes for myself, as well as flashbacks featuring her that resurface in future seasons, I think that if anything Lonnie is a roadblock to the truth, in the same sense that Terry is. Because the evidence that Terry isn't El's mom is too alarming to ignore. Like, once you see it, it becomes very obvious they've always been trying to hint this to us, as subtly as possible, and they did it successfully bc it went over everyone's heads.
And so since Terry isn't El's mom, and there are certain details tying Terry to having some sort of connection to Brenner (ie Papa/Mama, Bonsai trees, Hopper's line about Terry's 'relationship' with Brenner), then it's very likely that, in the original timeline/universe or whatever we want to call it, Terry could have worked closely with the lab in some capacity, though ended up supporting Joyce’s claims over allegations about the lab and experimentation, ie. the article at the end of s1 including Joyce/Terry's testimonies. And so she was basically a confidant to them who went against the lab and was lobotomized for it and placed in a scenario that blocked out the truth very conveniently for them, while also essentially punishing her.
And when it comes to Lonnie... That is where it gets very complicated. Because I think it's likely that in the OG timeline, Lonnie was not the greatest guy. I think there was a lot of scary subtext surrounding him harming Will in s1 and it's possible that this dude has been given the role of their father in this timeline, which in the original timeline he is not. He's essentially Stranger Things' very own Biff.
This does make me very intrigued about what is going to be revealed in 'The First Shadow' play coming soon. We're said to get the backstory for not only Joyce and Hopper but also Lonnie and Bob (and Henry) apparently, so that is making for some interesting potential Back to the Future parallels from Marty’s parents’ 1955 timeline vs Willel’s parents’ 1959 timeline. Also the synopsis being young Joyce Maldonado and Jim Hopper dealing with the shadows of the past...
Arguably, it is crunch time. We're approaching the final season and this is a revelation that a lot of the audience are probably not going to be ready for, despite a lot of the hints in the details. I presume they wont have much time in s5 to rehash the mysteries of the past, beyond glossing it over, and so this was honestly a perfect way for them to go back and give context for what is to come in a really unique way that is canon, but without having to cram too much into s5 like they had to for s4.
I do think that Lonnie is very likely to return in s5. Though he referred to Hawkins at its most tame as a hell hole, so idk if he would be running back there during an apocalypse, seeing as everyone else seems to be trying to get out ASAP. It is possible though, and yet I just really don't think his arc is about this series long secret that he is both El and Will's father. If anything I think the revelation is much darker in relation to what truly happened to him and El, possibly in relation to the lab, as he could indeed have been an MKUltra volunteer like you said. It could also help to go read up on some of the cases/allegations put against MKUltra back in the day bc, though it is quite disturbing in parts, it could very well hold the answer to at least some secrets seeing as this is partially based on a real life program that did exist back in the day.
If Lonnie was their dad, I think he would have been a lot more prioritized in the overall story over the seasons, and yet they kind of introduced him in s1 with only a couple references to him in passing since then. If anything it's giving we do not want to give this character too much acknowledgement in the story.
I think a return for him would perhaps look like the storys way of revealing to us that he is not actually their father. Either via flashbacks to the og timeline or perhaps vecna visions at a point when we’re still assuming this is Will’s dad. I do think he very likely is connected to the darker secrets behind what really happened though, related to Will and El's original disappearances, leading up to them in the lab presumably.
I won't claim to understand the memory/time-loop nonsense, because I think that it could also have a lot to do with Will's powers related to time and therefore probability perhaps, which ties really well into the whole X-Men 134 reference. And yet, obviously, I feel like it's too much to try to be certain about which angle go at it, despite having a lot of the pieces to perhaps figure it out? Bc we can guess all day what Will's powers will look like, but we still don't really know for certain? And so going too far beyond that feels like too much guessing to me.
I will say that what makes me even more confident about this theory, even more than the Terry evidence, is just the heaps of evidence connecting Will and El from the very beginning, and how that also connects to Joyce and Hopper more often than not.
If you're open to looking at evidence related to the whole Joyce + Hopper = Willel twins + Jon ? gate (?), or even just how byler also fits into this, bc tbh a lot of the evidence connects, these are a few posts below that might peak your interest. And this isn’t even all of it.
This is the MAIN one so if you read any of them, read this (first and foremost)
Twelvegate Evidence going back to s1 and oh so many unanswered questions
Twelvegate Evidence going back to s1 + Willel Twins
Deer Imagery following The Hoppers/Byers Family
David Harbour cryptically changing his IG pfp to twins, multiple times before S4 dropped:
The fact that Star Wars' big plot twist was that Luke/Leia were twins... That the Duffers are twins... That Noah Schnapp is a twin... 'IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT (MIKE), THEY'RE IDENTICAL'...
El: Me? I'm twice as happy now *cut camera to estranged twin Will opening van door for him and El*
The Wright Bros
Parallels between El being confronted, with Will standing by frozen
"She missed her dad. We all do."
El and Will reuniting at Nina and the remaining timestamp is 12:00
"Mom!"
I will alway say that I am subject to be wrong. The only thing I'm very confident about now is that Terry isn't El's mom, and it just so happens that everything else sort of falls into place after that.

Hi! Since you've seen the play a few times, would you mind answering a quick question? Does the Hawkins Library make any kind of appearance or otherwise get mentioned in the play?
Between its clock tower which chimes like Vecna's grandfather clock as the four gates converge at its location, and the fact it's where Will was taken to get slugged, the library is clearly a place of significance for Vecna -- but as far as I've been able to gather, the play doesn't seem to offer any explanation as to why.
Does The Hawkins Library Appear In TFS?
HELLO!! <3 Great question- sadly, the play does NOT touch on the library at all. It’s honestly a little weird that it’s literally never brought up whatsoever!
Which, I think it’s extra weird that the library never got brought up considering how the ST library clock tower parallels the clock tower in Back To The Future. Especially since in TFS, Henry is always running late, much like Marty McFly, and his code name was George during the auditions (much like George McFly), and then there’s also the changing newspapers about George McFly that change based on changes to the timeline, versus a.) the Henry vs Edward papers about the Creel murders in-show and b.) the weird TFS newspapers about the Creel murders that are completely different from the in-show newspapers about the Creel murders.
There’s also the whole thing re: “you have to be your dad” in TFS vs Marty McFly almost accidentally becoming his own father/erasing himself from existence.
Which, the newspaper thing is especially interesting re: the missing library considering that the newspapers were down in the library basement in s4 (well, specifically, the weekly watcher was/thats where we get the scene of robin grabbing the weekly watcher to look at) vs will being in the UD library’s basement in S1.
It also struck me as weird that there’s so many other things/parts of Hawkins that are mentioned on the posters in the theatre and that are relevant in-show (such as the first Snow Ball), but don’t even get a single throwaway line in the play. Even though there’s other locations (such as Henderson Liquors) that have the entire building on stage, both interior and exterior/Henry walks into it- not to mention the giant USS Eldridhe ship on stage. Point is, if they wanted to show us a location, whether interior or exterior, they would, so it’s a pointed choice for them Not to.
Which, this whole location weirdness is extra weird when we consider what I talked about in this post re: almost every location in TFS also being Hawkins High for some reason.
However, Will’s scenes underneath the library in S1 definitely have cave vibes IMO, and I think that’s definitely going to tie into some Henry parallels re: the cave that Henry was in when he was in Nevada/when he contracted the shadow.
And like I’ve talked about on here before, the clock also never shows up in TFS, even though we hear it, we never see it, despite the fact that there’s a whole scene in the Creel foyer, it’s a.) conveniently dark and b.) the clock just. Isn’t there, so there’s smthn rattling about that vs the library clock also not showing up in TFS and the parallels between the Creel clock and the library clock in S4.
I also wonder if the library’s significance to Vecna is going to tie into the whole Brenner-As-Vecna/Beenner having merged himself with Henry or Edward thing, and if the library was significant to Brenner because a.) we do get him tied to the library in S1 when Hopper reads those articles about him in the library and b.) TFS straight up had Vecna’s shadow pop up behind Brenner, and IMO, the Brenner-Vecna connection just gets stronger every day.
Anyway! I hope this answers your question/helps! :DD Thanks for the ask! <333

There are many interesting details in the posters inside the Phoenix Theater.
(screenshots by bugsbenefit)
These two remind me a lot of Joyce and Hopper (oh, hello Mind Flayer, lol). 'The strangest place to start your family future'. Hm, family, future... Are Hopper and Joyce the ST George and Lorraine Mcfly? And Biff is Lonnie
Tumblr media
This reminds me of Jonathan, of course (that 2.0 tho)
Tumblr media
Another film by Richardson (Dark of the moon) A scientist, a specialist (Henry: "She called a doctor, an expert") Richard(son) who wants you for your mind...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also this one. Horror in the Attic. J. L Ellis. Like Dr Ellis in 4x01? Dr Ellis and Six who are paralleled to Will and El at school. Hm

My Stranger Things Season 4 conspiracy theory
(Spoilers for season 3) Okay guys, I have a big theory. I’m not sure if other people noticed this, but I’m going to lay it down for you. So You know how they made so many allusions to back to the future in season 3? I think that El and company found a way to travel back in time through the upside down and they were there in episode 8, trying to save Hopper. Perhaps they found another test subject in their new town whose special power is time traveling? I think they succeeded. Here’s why:
So episode One it shows all of the Russians in their suits. They’re green suits with gas masks.
Tumblr media
and then here, right before Joyce pulls the plug, here are the workers in red hazmat suits, and for some reason they slow-mo step out and stare at Hopper and it zooms in on their eyes, and are those people familiar? Are they the kids, sort of grown up? One of them looks like Jonathan?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You might think this is just a coincidence, but remember: color coding. Earlier in the episode you see a bunch of workers running around, but there are some wearing green hazmat suits and some wearing red ones. The red ones seem to be trying to interact with our main characters more than the green ones.  Here are some in green:
Tumblr media
and then here are some in red, actually trying to shut off the machine, but they’re just kids, they don’t know how it actually works:
Tumblr media
And then the next shot shows the guys in green running to the right and the guys in red running to the room that Murray is in:
Tumblr media
You may think at first these guys in red are trying to arrest or kill Murray, but what if Murray messed up something and that’s what these time travelers are trying to prevent? What if they succeeded getting in there or told Murray through the door what to do? We don’t see very much of Murray after this, only one shot. But “aren’t you a little short to be a stormtrooper?” Isn’t that hazmat person right there a bit short? Maybe it’s Dustin from the future.
Tumblr media
I think that they found out how to work the machine so that it would not kill them, just make a blinding enough light that it would obscure Joyce’s vision of Hopper while El, walking up to her dad with her friends, could pull them into the upside down in time. After all, she was able to disintegrate herself and the demogorgon season one, and she survived.
Tumblr media
Hopper nodding for Joyce to do it.^
Tumblr media
^El and Jonathan and possibly people she meets in her new town.
And the upside down has a skewed sense of time. After all, Billy went into the upside down for what seemed like a long time, but he was probably just gone for a little bit. Will also goes into the upside down and seems to be gone for a long time when he’s actually just standing out in the field, hallucinating. This time anomaly will allow for Hopper possibly being popped out of the upside down somewhere in Russia and getting caught by the russians. This would account for the Russian’s mysterious prisoner, “The American”. It’s Hopper, and he’s been saved by El and her time traveling friends.
Tumblr media
One reason I think they would include this twist is because, as stated earlier before, they were making a lot of references to Back to the Future, even having them watch it, showing a poster, having the music hilariously when it cuts back to dustin, and oh yeah, Marty McFly wears a hazmat suit in back to the future, and it looks A LOT like the red hazmat suits, to conceal his identity.  Nice reference, guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^Marty, pretending to be “Darth Vader” from the planet “Vulcan”, threatening to melt George McFly’s brains unless he asks his future wife to the Under the Sea Dance.
Anyway, this has been my theory. I hope you like it!

what did cody said about klave?
Omg Anon okay so, twitter user umbrellaacademy invited Cody to do a twitter space with them which they did yesterday (8PM Friday EST) and Cody stayed for OVER TWO AND A HALF HOURS answering fan questions and saying SO MANY things about Dave and Klave and I am still so overwhelmed. I have recorded it and I’ve sent the video to the host and they’ve said they’ll release it soon (although the file is massive so I suspect they’ll have a bit of trouble wrangling it like I did so it might take longer). In the meantime, some highlights under the cut:
- Dave’s favourite thing about Klaus is his openness. He’s charismatic because he’s unafraid to be himself. Cody also finds it endearing that Klaus marches to the beat of his own drum.
- He likes the idea that the briefcase brought Klaus to Dave because of fate/destiny. Dave is the missing piece of Klaus, he fills a void in Klaus. He’s as interested as we are to find out if the timeline loops back in season 3
- Dave is soft spoken. There are qualities of Dave that have grounded and soothed Klaus but also Klaus has pulled Dave out of his shell. Klaus’ openness was like an invitation to Dave to open up and be goofy and strange, and this was a vibe Cody got from Robert as well in the bar scene, but then the dynamic shifted later and he felt that Dave was the one who was opening up first.
- Dave would go with Klaus to be with his family. He would want Klaus to take the reigns and would trust Klaus re- what kind of life they could have together post Vietnam. Although there would be no hesitation from Dave about his love for Klaus, there might be hesitation about planning a life together because of the time period they were in. There’s a sense of peace and wanting to settle from Klaus. Cody just basically being solidly on the Klaus bringing Dave back to 2019 to meet his family train.
-  There is a sensitivity and self awareness to Dave, Cody thinks he accepted his sexuality but just was careful about advertising it because of the time period. He also says that his Dave in season 1 didn’t have the experience we saw in season 2 with his uncle and that might have made him more open (I am staring directly at my reverse George McFly theory).
- Dave’s love for Klaus is unconditional, he loves him for exactly who he is. Dave’s unconditional love is a foil for the conditional love Klaus gets from his family. Klaus doesn’t really know what love is and then he gets fired this laser beam of love from Dave.
- Cody that been in a play where his character was in a relationship with a guy but he thinks Rob hadn’t done that before. The director set the tone that the kiss scene was an intimate and tender scene. He feels like there was a reassurance from Dave to Klaus in that moment.
- Dave was holding 4 shot glasses in the scene where he’s holding them with both hands.
- Cody describing Dave in 4 words - kind, sensitive, empathetic, soft. Dave would describe Klaus as free spirited, open, unfiltered, unexpected (he also put forward chaotic but didn’t stick with it and replaced it with unexpected).
- Dave’s first thought when he woke up and saw Klaus was “Is this a dream... We’re not sleeping much so this could be a dream, I wouldn’t put it past my brain” Also “The dream coming to reality but maybe not necessarily looking like what he thought.”
- He thinks Klaus probably took the dogtags off Dave after he died as a way to remember him rather than them exchanging them
- He wants Klaus and Dave’s storyline to end with love prevailing. He also floats the idea of Dave taking a dark turn and Klaus has to be the redemptive person to bring Dave back.
In preparation for playing Dave he watched the Ken Burns Vietnam War documentary series on Netflix and also looked up online about the Vietnam war. He also listened to music he thought Dave would be into from 1965-1968: He mentions Motown and Stones (Cody said he himself likes Motown)
- Cody’s favourite thing about Dave is the quality of how he loves Klaus. He describes it as pure and unconditional and simple and he talks about he thinks people need to love each other fearlessly - not just romantically but in friendships as well, especially with what’s happening now (and this sort of clarifies to me why he was talking about love over fear so passionately in the clever klaus q&a and what he meant by that)
- Cody is a fantasy nerd
- He would love to see Dave giving Klaus some agency
- He thinks that Klaus has some guilt about Dave’s death
- He would like to play a Commission agent (Commission Dave rights!!)
- Robert is very open and unassuming and funny and it was easy to have an immediate rapport with him. Cody also talked with Tom Hopper (about their mutual friend Bradley James). He also briefly met Colm and Robin and he also remembered he met Aidan (who here had a theory about a deleted scene with Aidan in the attic?)
- He doesn’t know how time works in the afterlife or how Klaus’ power works but Dave would have waited 50 years for Klaus
- Calem joined the space and they said that they hadn't interacted before but they had a bit of a chat. Calem said that his filming in season 2 was 4 days but about 1 month apart. Calem’s internet kept cutting out and then he disappeared.
- If Dave was one of the 43 children his power could be the care bear love blast and he could fire hot beams of love out of the hole in his chest. He would give Dave a more passive power to round out the more active powers the other Hargreeves have, like a healer
- The scene in the tent was filmed at the studio. The scene on the bus was shot outside. The scene in the trench was partly shot outside but some of it was shot in the studio as well (I wonder if he’s confusing that trench scene with the hallucination at the Rave though?)
- He said the scenes were beautifully lit (I beg to differ, Cody!)
- Klaus helped unlock that part of him (I think he means Dave’s sexuality) and he also says that Klaus was a very specific target to Dave’s love. Klaus seems like one in a million. When you love someone there’s something specific about them that pulls that out of you.
- Calem returns! He was in his room where the internet crapped out on him but then he went downstairs. Cody asked what it was like for Calem to come in and play an established character. Calem said he purposely didn’t talk with Cody about the character before playing him because he’d done the audition without knowing anything about the character so he didn’t want to risk doing something too different from what he’d done in the audition, but he did watch season 1. He also said he was a bit anxious about what the audience would think of him playing the character, and Cody went into acting mentor mode and said that he doesn’t think the job is about appeasing the fans but about trying to be as true as possible. He also said that Calem did a good job and he shouldn’t be hard on himself but Calem then said that he quickly got over it and he wasn’t thinking about it on set, just afterwards. Calem mentioned that he creeped Cody’s IMDB and he said that his dad was a camera operator on Lizzie Borden Chronicles this Cody guest starred in an episode of.
- Dave loves music like Cody. He mentioned Four Tops as another band and then Motown again. He thinks the bar scene shows Dave’s love of music but he wasn’t thinking about that at the time.
- Dave would be overstimulated at first if he came to the future because we’re bombarded with a lot more stimulus than in the 60s. The internet and iPhones would blow his mind. He let’s a “we’ll see” slip, which he then quickly corrects to “we would see”
- The kiss in the bar was definitely the first kiss and he thinks it happened a couple months into the tour. He thinks the feelings were mutual quite early, but that it would have taken some time to act on them and to be able to gauge if each other were really giving off the signals that they like each other.
- He’s appreciative of the fan love and he tries to make a connection with everyone he can
- Dave is an optimistic force who thinks that love will prevail so he would have wanted to do something to make it work despite the obstacles they faced
- Cody doesn’t know how close to the vest Klaus kept the stuff about his powers and the time travel etc but he did see Klaus appear so he does know there’s something strange about him. Dave trusted Klaus and even if it wasn’t explicitly talked about there was enough trust to go “wherever you go I’ll follow, wherever that leads.” When Klaus conjures Dave, Dave is excited to see him but isn’t really surprised or put off by any of the circumstances that Klaus is in.
- He thinks that Dave is more the listener of the relationship, but he could certainly see Dave telling Klaus about Dune and Klaus indulging him.
- Rob is very genuine, very unassuming, very immediately open, very funny, definitely puts you at ease, incredibly thoughtful, very considerate, good dude (wow it’s the complimenting Rob speed run! 8 in a row!)
- The aspect of Dave that Cody connects to most is his non-judgemental quality
- Dave would connect with Vanya’s softness and Luther’s moral compass (he said Diego’s moral compass in the cleverklaus q&a so not sure if he just mixed them up). He thinks Dave might be a bit too sincere for Five and Ben would appreciate being able to unload Klaus on Dave.
- He thinks Dave is not a tattoo guy but Klaus is impulsive so getting a tattoo really aligns with his personality. He thinks that Dave’s actions speak louder than words written on him
- He connects to the fractured family theme of the show on a personal level
- Dave being jewish was something he only learned about through looking at the dogtags, it wasn’t in the script or anything
- Dave might have studied Philosophy if he’d gone to college instead of joining the military, he feels like there’s a dreamer quality to Dave
- Even though Dave was pressured into joining the military, he thinks that Dave believed he was going the right thing by enlisting
- Colm is a Canadian Hall of Fame actor and Reginald is such an intense character so Cody would love to do a scene with him. He would also love to do a scene with Elliot.
- Cody remembered waiting on set to film the scene in the club and he, Rob and Tom were in an 80s hotel with a heart shaped jacuzzi (??? oh was this the set with the Handler and Agnes maybe?)

Character/Movie List
Below is movies and TV shows I like personally and are lsited as a reference. If you don't see something you're interested in, it is not that I don't like it, it is because I most likely forgot it because I love so many movies/shows tbh. Just ask, and I'll answer! Earth Angel (please will you be mine?)
1985
The cabin was bathed in soft lighting, a few small lamps leaving an orangey glow. Empty plates of eggos were left on the small dining table. The TV light reflected off Mike and El’s faces as Back to the future played in the background.
El’s head was rested comfortably against Mike’s shoulder, his arm around hers in an action that was so natural now. It was almost second nature to be touching somehow, an arm or a hand, almost unconsciously reassuring each other that they were still there. Still together.
He looked down at El and couldn’t help but smile when her eyes met his. On screen George and Lorraine had begun dancing at the prom. It made Mike think of the Snowball, the first time he danced with El. He remembered the feeling of his hands lightly on her waist, her hands around his neck as she pulled him closer to her.
Earth angel, Earth angel
Will you be mine?
He stood up off the couch, holding his hand out shyly to her. She looked at him for a second, trying to read his face. Her eyes darted back to the screen, seeing the couples dancing. El smiled but looked down. He didn’t like it when she did that, as if she were embarrassed of her smile. He loved her smile, wanted to do everything in his power to see it as often as possible. She took his hand and he helped her up, pulling her closer again.
My darling dear
Love you all the time
Mike thought he would be brave, and took one of her hands in his, placing the other on his shoulder and his other hand on her waist. They begun swaying around the small room, the song still playing from the movie.
Mike spun El around like he’d seen on TV. She let out a small laugh and wrapped her arms around his neck when he pulled her closer. She buried her head against his shoulder and Mike could feel his heart beating in his throat. El hugged him tighter and when she pulled back, her eyes locked with Mike’s. Whenever she was that close to him, she could see every last freckle on his cheeks. The closeness just reminded her that it was real. That all of this was real. She was safe, she was back. She had him.
I’m just a fool
A fool in love with you
She pressed on her tiptoes, knowing exactly what she wanted. Every time she tried, they were interrupted. But this time she would be the one. There was a brief millisecond while Mike processed what was happening, but then he relaxed, smiling against her lips.
They opened their eyes, both noticing how their cheeks were warm. But El pressed her forehead against Mike’s, pulling him close. They still continued to sway slowly in a circle, too caught up in each other to notice the sound of Marty McFly singing Johnny B. Goode.
***
Hopper was walking up the path towards the cabin, noticing the soft glow coming from the closed curtains.
He slowly opened the door, not wanting to startle the two teens but he stopped when he heard the music. The door was open only slightly, but Hopper could make out the shape of the two slowly swaying to the music, similar to the couple on screen.
He smiled at the scene, catching the two in a moment where the outside world simply didn’t exist to them. They seemed to be the only two in the world.
Hopper quietly closed the door, deciding to let them have their moment. He couldn’t interrupt something so sweet, so innocent. Wheeler was a good kid, he wasn’t surprised why El had chosen him. Hopper sat on the porch, lit a cigarette. The summer evening was warm. He shook his head, laughing to himself. It wasn’t until he heard the sound of laughter from the cabin that he knew their moment was over. But somehow he knew he’d experience this a lot more in the future. Mike wasn’t going anywhere, even if he wanted to. El would make sure of that.

HC where they see Back to the Future and ponder what it would be like to travel back in time.
First off, Will loves Marty McFly. He watches him play guitar at the Enchantment After the Sea Dance and is in love.
He insists Mike is just as cool as Marty. Mike laughs and tells him that just because they’re dating doesn’t mean he has to lie. Will isn’t.
But then, lead man aside, Mike and Will start talking semantics. Like, why did George keep Biff around after he assaulted his wife? And how did Marty’s lasting commentary to his parents back in 1955 not freak them out? Will and Mike have so many theories, and a long walk home.
More than anything, they keep thinking about what they would do if they traveled through time accidentally. Waking up in 1985 is scary enough as it was, they couldn’t imagine 1955.
They ignore the fact they couldn’t even have gone on their date back then. They can barely go on their date then.
They begin to wonder what they’d change if they went back. It starts innocent; Mike would go back and see what his mother was like in high school– before he became his “uncool” mom. Will would go back and see is step-dad because there’s no way he was ever an actual teenager.
Then Will starts to wish he could go back in time and get his mom to date Hopper instead of Lonnie– he wants his mom to always be happy. Then Jonathan wouldn’t have to raise Will, taking away from his own childhood. He’d get his happy family.
Will doesn’t say this out loud, instead he jokes that he’d want to go back and play eighties music and scare everyone. Mike pretends he doesn’t see Will’s face falter in the conversation’s lull.
He takes Will’s hand and they walk home from the theater together. Will is quiet the whole walk home. Mike eventually gets him to laugh quoting Biff’s idiotic one-liners.
Mike wishes he could go back and force Will to stay over that one night back in 1983. Will wouldn’t have disappeared and he wouldn’t have that dark, deep distance in his eyes. Mike wishes he could go back in time and save Will.
But he doesn’t say that out loud either.

a little nervous here bc while there are sus clues in the show that could be telling us abt willel being biological twins, there's also some stuff that could hint at mike and el being related too..☠️with all the strange creel x wheeler similarities and theories abt henry possibly being el's biological father.☠️ the latter is less luckily imo and personally i don't like the theory of willel being biological siblings very much either but i cant deny there's something really sus going on
Henry is definitely NOT El’s biological father, nor Will's. So you don't have to worry about that being a possibility. And so even if the Wheelers ended up being related to the Creels somehow, El nor Will are related to Henry by blood.
Joyce is 100% Will’s mom, and so because of all the twin imagery being associated with Will and El, I’m fairly confident that means Joyce has gotta be El’s mom too.
My theory relies on time trickery/false memories/memory stealing in general, which is why Joyce and Hopper don't know Will/El are their biological twins.
But also just to be clear, in 1959, Henry was 12 and Joyce and Hopper were 17… So yeah, he’s not El nor Will's dad.
I also think the play The First Shadow being added to canon as a prequel of sorts, supports this theory. The fact that it's set in 1959, and is going to focus on young Joyce and Hopper, dealing with 'the shadows of the past'...
It's likely that once Henry 'figured out' that he could turn back the clock (important to note that the clock in the Creel house little Henry watched turn back, was on the same time as the clock in Hawkins Lab...), then it would make A LOT of sense for him to go back to 1959, a time when Joyce and Hopper were together, to ensure they still had Jon/Will/El, but to change the events surrounding it so that they would essentially have no idea.
It's very much giving Back to the Future Part II, where Biff goes back to the past and messes up the trajectory of the future timeline, leading to George McFly dying, essentially leaving the kids with an absolute shit stain of a father whose not actually their father, aka Lonnie...
I'm still not certain about how it would all work and that's bc the implications of time trickery complicate things, making it near impossible to navigate. Not only are we dealing with turning back the clock, we're also potentially dealing with time-loops, where time could be getting turned back over and over and over again, without the character's knowledge that they've done this before.
And so if this is their 5th, 6th, 7th, or thousandth time going through this, they apparently aren't aware of it (at least not fully), which means their understanding of their past/present is pretty shaky as it is.
Though tbh I think where I get most confused about how all of this works is when it comes to the Hawkins Lab's stake in what's going on? Do they know about Henry's plans? Do they know there is time trickery going on? Are they playing a big part in orchestrating certain things?
Technically, in s4, Brenner and Owens admitted that they're keeping part of the truth from El. They literally showed her the 'true' events of the lab massacre in 4x07, only to reveal that wasn't even the full truth privately without her around? And so clearly, they know about something that is being hidden from us that we still haven't been clued in on, meaning it's being saved for s5. And so, what is it?
For now I'm not certain about everything, but there's a lot of evidence supporting this as a series long revelation.
And the fact that David Harbour has been saying for years that there are Easter Eggs in s1 that are going to lead to a really beautiful ending, makes it sort of click for me that he was probably talking about this...

Note
Hmm something about how Lonnie starts out being George Mcfly-coded and ends up being Biff Tannen-coded. 🤔
Especially with the theory on how Hopper and Joyce may have been married in another timeline. In BttF 2, Biff creates an alternate timeline where he kills George, marries Lorraine and is Marty’s stepdad.
OOHOHOHOHOHOHH GNAWING ON THIS OMG ESP WITH ALL THE CREEL TIMELINE WEIRDNESS!!!!! GODDDDD
