honestly, i think the biggest issue with choice based games currently is that they're all praised for being the same thing rather than something that breaks the mold. there's no room for uniqueness anymore! there's no room for storytelling! if you aren't a supernatural horror story with the same types of characters, then you shouldn't be a story at all. i thought this was just a thing in the dark pictures fandom, but i've seen it in other things too now and it's just. tiring. people turning their noses up at games like man of medan and little hope and demanding an until dawn 2 is exactly why the quarry was the half baked game it was, and yet is also why said game got much more positive feedback then the other two games mentioned. it was their until dawn 2 ; it had supernatural monsters, it was action heavy, and the characters were just vague enough that anyone could project anything onto them. and if that's your type of game, fine! no harm to you! but it's exhausting seeing creators be hated on when they try to do anything different. the dark pictures anthology was never supposed to be anything like until dawn, yet every bit of criticism was about how it wasn't. players don't understand the difference between personal preference and actually critique anymore, it's just. “ if this game isn't exactly like this then i don't want it and it's objectively bad! ” which couldn't be more wrong lol

little hope and man of medan did something different, whether they did it well or not is up to debate, but at least they tried -- in a space where that isn't common at all. and they did improve in some aspects! they were able to focus on the characters more since the group was shortened, a flaw they had in until dawn ( and then the quarry, most obviously ), the monsters designed in those two games were vastly creative in every regard, different for each individual character ... something that immediately changed in house of ashes and the quarry, since people only wanted an until dawn 2. it's just sad to see creativity get stomped on in a genre that should be more artistic than ever! and it's becoming more and more obvious as time goes on that people don't care about originality as much as they claim they do, they just want their favorite game over and over again. i've been seeing the same thing happen with as dusk falls and it's getting irritating to say the least. gamers claim they want something new, and then they get a game that's made the way it is simply because it's trying to challenge what's the norm, and then they throw a fuss about it. there's nothing supernatural about as dusk falls, it's not action heavy because it's not an action game ; it's a choice based game, which it does indeed deliver on! but since it's not your until dawn, or your twdg, then that means it has to be trash. story and characters don't matter the way it used to, and i wish people would simply acknowledge how biased they are rather than pretending to the gordon ramsey of gaming, since they're the very reason why games are following the same formula nowadays.
