im so bored so what i expect from the new season (mean edition):

-lewis and george crash (silver arrows edition) and camera pans to nico rosberg

-lewis fans calling george racist

-checo moving for max quietly at the first race, max is faster than you checo

-max lapping checo (if in mexico, mexicans booing)

-toto crowdsurfing with george after lewis not winning one single race (once again)

-max saying something stupid to media to make everyone go crazy (once again)

-charles making more mistakes and his self confidence just disappearing but its ok he gets a free pass from the slanders bcs he is handsome

-charles quits f1 to become a full time ferrari influencer in social media

-george and lewis playing toxic mindgames to each other on sky and ted having a panik attack over it bcs he cannot decide who to back up (he chooses george and gets kicked out of sky for being racist)

-fernando actually being chill with lance (its a bad thing imo)

-carlos only there to thirst trap other drivers and fans (oh that is his every year in f1 already, nothing new!)

I don't really know why Max is continuing to lose followers at an increasing rate. I thought that because he posted something on IG for the New Year, he'd see a little spike but the post seemed to trigger the decline to be faster.

A possibility (and this would explain Daniel and Lando too probably) is that IG does mass clearing of bots at the end of a month/start of one. I've seen dips before during the end of the month/start of the next month but I don't have any sort of concrete knowledge that this is happening.

what do you think about the whole "stOp the hate f1" account on instagram

I don't think that platforming hateful stuff is an effective way of combating it. people who are saying the stuff that's featured on there - that they hope drivers crash or die - are doing it for attention and reaction and nothing about being called out will deter them.

it's also rather obviously got a pro-RB/Verstappen bias. there's nothing wrong with being a fan of RB/Max but the account itself has a clear agenda to showcase Lewis fans as specifically hateful. so essentially it's just stoking the fires that it claims, in rather hyperbolic fashion, to be combating.

F1 discourse is insane currently. I mean in the sense it is extremely mentally unhealthy; the level of aggression over the smallest things is completely disproportionate and it is not normal or healthy for people to be in this constant combative state.

take the now-48h old beef over whether Ricciardo is featured enough on McLaren's social. no one has any idea what the context of the fact he's not given as much prominence as Lando is - maybe Danny Ricc doesn't permit the team to re-share his personal posts, etc whereas Lando does (I think it's very naff social media to do it in any case but whatever) and with things like his TV appearance, it was that they are sponsored by a rival US network. or maybe there's a huge internal conspiracy at McLaren and they for some reason don't want to use 50% of the marketing opportunity on the two guys they pay obscene amounts but that feels somewhat more unlikely.

anyway, beefing McLaren would be one thing but instead fans are tearing into each other over whether Daniel or Lando is a better driver. which has nothing at all to do with the original point (which was why does Danny have less prominence on McL's social than Lando and which it'd be interesting to actually look into) and is just vicious beefing for the sake of vicious beefing.

innocuous comments are taking insanely out of proportion and fans of one driver are spending more time monitoring fans of other drivers to see things to call them out on. it's not normal sports discourse this is like when I used to run the Radio 1 social media and Zayn had left One Direction. or idk, centrists vs Uncle Jez or even TERF wars. maybe it's because F1 drivers are so much individuals not teams or something but it's very, very unhealthy and does genuinely need to be addressed.

the media has undoubtedly played a major role, especially in the way that the clashes between Verstappen and Hamilton were handled last year. there are also plenty of people (and I genuinely don't think I'm guilty of this, specific, twitter crime but maybe) who'll stoke it with faux insight designed to play to one side or another.

like, take fake water discourse, a new low in things people could reach violent disagreement over. there's just no need for it is there.

second year in a row Valtteri Bottas has had a stuck nut and we haven't even had the chance to properly enjoy it ffs.

I’ve just seen that the official f1 Twitter posted a video of George and Bottas’ crash in Imola last year and honestly it’s gotten me so annoyed. Yes George didn’t handle it the best and didn’t show him in the best light bit seems comments he’s made since he’s really learned from it. The comments are turning on George as usual and the cynic in me really thinks that they did it on purpose as George has not been baited into their nasty agenda against Lewis.

I’m also really nervous with the amount of points Charles, Ferrari can pull ahead by. Huge chance for other teams too. Fingers crossed the weekend treats the Merc boys well 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

100%, F1 is doing this because they have failed in turning George against Lewis to try to make Lewis look bad so they are restoring to do this. It is childish honestly. Yes, George was a bit of a dick towards Valtteri but he has grown from it, even he admits he was in the wrong. Tbh, if Imola does stay on the calender for the next few years, the F1 admin will drag up this video every year, I guarantee.

I hope Merc can solve (or at least get more of an understanding) their issues in Imola & hope it's a good race for both drivers until then, I hope Charles & Ferrari continue to beat Red Bull. I can deal with Merc not winning if it's Ferrari doing so instead 😂

Why has George been set up so much lately - firstly with all the comments with pundits wanting him to trip up with their agenda against Lewis and now the sports official social media posting days after each other the incident with Bottas last year, he was at fault for that but lately he’s done nothing but stick to the PR narrative and get on with his team mate. Other drivers are PR merchants too, in fact they all are.

Apologies for the rant. I know there are more important things to worry about in the world, but it annoys me so much!

It’s a difficult one. I think the short answer is, it’s the effects of moving from a team at the back and flying under the radar, to moving to a team at the front and getting considerably more attention. Tall poppy syndrome. People build people up to knock them down.

The him v Lewis narrative is stupid. So far they couldn’t get on more if they tried, but we all know tension sells more than harmony.

I don’t think he’s any more or less “PR” than other drivers, I just think he’s sometimes more awkwardly blatant with it. Praising Mercedes? That’s not PR, that’s his job. Advertising his car in his personal IG posts? Lol, that’s where he maybe goes a step beyond but it’s just funny to me rather than a bad thing. People give him grief for it then criticise him when he comes out with something that’s decidedly not PR. Basically he can’t win.

The worst offenders are the ones that hate Mercedes, hate Lewis, hate anyone that won’t buy into their agenda and so it’s a waste of time worrying too much about them.

Imola is one of those incidents now that will unfortunately get brought up for the foreseeable future, in time it’ll get replaced by something else. He did something dumb, he went away, thought about it, admitted it was dumb and apologised. There’s nothing more he can do. The people involved have moved on, if people who weren’t can’t, we’ll I guess that’s their problem really?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tales of Symphonia: Japanese Notes (Part 4)

I’m currently recording a playthrough of Tales of Symphonia with the Japanese voices, which was at least partly done so I could take notes of the differences between the Japanese and English in this game.

In Episode 4, we talk about things that weren’t translation errors, and a couple different ways one can say ‘you’ in Japanese..

> This episode opens with some, er, “Desians”—Can I call them Renegades at this point? They’re Renegades, okay, I’m keeping a lid on some spoilers but not fucking all of them. Anyway it opens with them discussing how it’s unfortunate, there’s no way Lloyd will escape execution. However, if you know anything about the Renegades, you know that “killing Lloyd” is not on their agenda list. @texanona contacted me wondering if this was a mistranslation—it’s not!

Here’s screenshots of the lines in Japanese just for posterity. (Thanks again to EmriuTheKnight and their playthrough in Japanese!) They say essentially the same thing as in English.

Guard 1: …if that’s the case, I feel sorry for Lloyd

Guard 2: Yeah, there’s no way he’ll escape execution.

The thing of note here is that we don’t see the entirety of what Guard 1 is referring to, just that “Lloyd won’t escape execution”. Perhaps Guard 1 is talking about how Lloyd won’t be able to escape the Desians, and the information was just omitted to make Lloyd and the player think that Lloyd was in immediate danger of execution, hence the need to escape. Otherwise, Renegades this far down on the ladder just aren’t privy to the full of the plan, I guess.

> At 1:41, Lloyd’s battle intro translates to “This will be an easy victory!”

> The English has Yuan say “Why you little—” but in Japanese he just straight up says kisama, which is the most insulting second-person pronoun you can use, often translated as “you bastard” but like most Japanese swears is only a swear if you choose to translate it as one.

> The next line is: “An exsphere! You’re Lloyd!?” which in Japanese is まさか、きさまロイドか？ It’s not a big difference other than that まさか (meaning ‘It can’t be!’, roughly, or other generic exclamations of surprise) was cut out, though Yuan’s surprise is probably conveyed well enough in his words/tone alone, really. Also he uses kisama for Lloyd again.

> The Renegades all call Yuan リーダー, literally, “leader”, said in English.

> Yuan uses watashi as his first-person pronoun of choice.

> Botta uses polite speech when addressing Yuan.

> Honestly I have never heard Yuan use a second-person pronoun for Lloyd that isn’t kisama, though perhaps towards the end of the game that changes. We’ll find out when we get there, I suppose.

> Raine shows up and says “Ah, Lloyd, Genis told me what happened. I’m sorry for the trouble he caused you.” It’s roughly the same in Japanese, the Japanese just feels more like “Genis told me a lot of things. It seems like he’s a troublesome child, isn’t he? I’m sorry.”

> Lloyd uses anta (instead of say, omae,) when addressing Kratos during the night scene in Triet. They’re both words for “you”, with the only difference being that anta is “more polite”. It’s hard to make definitive calls this early in the game, but since Lloyd uses omae pretty consistently with Genis and Colette (Genis especially), it’s possible that Lloyd’s use of anta @ Kratos (which is a common thread) is indicative of the slight distance in their relationship. Like, they aren’t distant enough for Lloyd to use super polite forms or anything, but they aren’t close enough for Lloyd to use omae, you know? Maybe I’m reading too much into it.

> (I said in the first episode’s notes Lloyd uses omae for Kratos at some point, but I forget what I was referring to? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a thing that happens late-game, after they become closer, nor would I be surprised if it only came up in Tales of Fandom vol 2, which is post-game. I’ll keep you updated on this, as well, I suppose.)

> Since everyone loves swearing: Lloyd says kuso, here, which is translated as ‘damn’. This is pretty standard. Of course, kuso can be translated as ‘crap’ if you want to be more tame, or ‘fuck’ if you want to be more extreme, but this game is rated PG-13 so we ain’t getting anything more explicit than ‘bastard’.
