#i just think that because of the 'bad*ss will' idea forming in opposition to 'baby will' it's often done without much tact

hey guys so uhhh folks keep going back and forth between will being a baby or will being a bad*ss and i'm just so tired of it.......
like he is so much more nuanced than either one... (if you're going to read, please read the whole thing! thank you!!)
there are the baseline observations that will is quiet, sensitive, maybe a little shy; he's sweet and loyal and incredibly selfless; in addition, he's frequently a victim of terrible circumstances, with unfortunately little agency to fight for himself. none of these observations are objectively incorrect, even if they're just a fraction of the observations that can be made.
some fans flanderize how shy and sweet will is, framing him as a cute crybaby in need of protection (which is ironic, as will canonically hates when people treat him like that). to them he's a sad gay boy, a soft little angel with teary doe eyes; they attribute a stereotypical femininity to him, a helplessness, making him a fragile damsel in distress. these fans take the canon aspects of will's personality and warp them, not only making them larger than life but also romanticizing them.
an opposing interpretation of will seemingly came about in opposition to "baby will" - many fans were reasonably unhappy with this belittling take on him, and so highlighted other aspects of his personality.
great, right? it'd be nice for people to perceive will as a whole person as opposed to a list of stock traits... it'd be nice for people not to ignore character traits of his that don't align with their perception of his character...
but alas, these fans traded in "baby will" for "bad*ss will" - a take i don't like either.
"bad*ss will" comes in two varieties: bad*ss villain will and bad*ss hero will. the latter is better than the former, but not by much. both involve will being uncharacteristically violent and confident, standing up for himself in a way that often involves firearms.
before delving into either of these varieties i should point out that yes, will isn't just a sweet shy little boy. he's incredibly brave and incredibly resilient, able to survive the upside down for a week and stand up to the mind flayer - and yes, he canonically knows how to operate a gun. will is also shown to be stubborn at times; he's an annoying little brother, perfectly willing to point out how his siblings have no friends; he also does curse, even if that cursing is nothing compared to the constant swearing of his friends. will's a strong kid. i can't accept "baby will" because he simply isn't a baby.
...but does that make him a bad*ss?
some people really want will to stand up for himself in st5, to finally have agency, to fight back against everything that's harmed him; i completely understand that.
some people think that will should become the villain in st5, getting revenge on the people in his life who have demeaned him, neglected him, and bullied him. they think that will has been through so much that he'll snap, his kindness being broken down by pain. they want will to be a villain, a tortured soul with a traumatic backstory who deserves to give everyone the hell he got condemned to - they want him to be a bad*ss villain.
others think that will should become the hero in st5, getting revenge on the upside down for ruining hours life and the lives of his loved ones. they want to see him confidently wielding a gun against vecna, unfazed by the circumstances that would've caused him to run and hide in his younger years. they want will to rise up from adversity and stop being the victim - they want him to be a bad*ss hero.
what really bugs me about these interpretations is that they completely gloss over the aforementioned observations of will being gentle and cautious - even though they're true. saying that will is timid, that will is kind, or that will is scared is not the same as saying he's a baby - because being timid, kind, or scared doesn't make you weak. after all, there is no bravery without fear.
all of these bad*ss whatever wills are conjured up only after scouring off any trait picked up be "baby will" truthers, instead favoring vague notions of will's "sass" or the fact that he can operate a gun. they make will completely out-of-character all for the sake of a fantasy in which the victim miraculously becomes confident and powerful. yes, i want will to gain confidence, but nothing i've seen contributes any ideas about how that would happen - especially considering how in st4 will's self-esteem was as low as ever, tearing up when his best friend and brother say they care about him. if he's that surprised that they love him you can't seriously expect him to suddenly love himself.
not to mention how a lot of this "bad*ss will" stuff revolves around will using a gosh darn shotgun. the only thing being addressed is the fact that there is an association between will and the accursed weapon, and the fact that he has aimed it at an upside down monster before - while completely sidestepping the trauma the gun carries with it. will only learned how to use it because of lonnie's homophobic coercion, and only actually dared to use it when scared half out of his mind by an interdimensional stalker in his garden shed. in no world could will ever be slinging a gun casually, confidently, suavely - if he's going to be aiming the gun at vecna (which he would only do if completely necessary) he's going to be anything but calm while doing so. if you wanted that, you already have nancy gosh darn wheeler. (will does not need to be your girlboss.)
my point in saying this is that will is kind. he's stubborn. he's brave. he's hesitant. he's sarcastic. he's sweet. he's shy. and none of that is contradictory. will is a character, sure, but he's complex; if you dislike will's corners being rounded off so he can be called a baby, you have to understand why i dislike will's curves being sharpened so he can be called a bad*ss. i want will to triumph, of course i do, but i want it to be him triumphing. his whole self.
will was the victim. and he can be a hero. but he shouldn't need to be a different person too.
#stranger things#will byers#st5#wise words from will#just for the record i'm not angry at anyone for drawing will with a gun#the potential of him reclaiming that symbol of stereotypical masculinity is something that can certainly be explored#and i'm not against him shooting vecna to be completely honest#i just think that because of the 'bad*ss will' idea forming in opposition to 'baby will' it's often done without much tact#without acknowledging how much he'd need to recover before he could gain even a fraction of the confidence people are ascribing to him#i don't really think will could ever be that confident. he could in no way be cool as a cucumber in this type of situation#even if he isn't actively afraid he could never be... posing hotly with a shotgun so mike can admire him?? idk it's not my fanart hhghhghh#y'know i'm just glad most 'bad*ss will' people want him to be a hero and not a villain#because people who think will would genuinely be a villain and would genuinely want to harm people drive me insane. i hate that so so much#if you think 'will should be the hero and he should shoot vecna' then i don't actually mind that much#it's when you start turning him into nancy 2.0 that it goes south for me#he can be a hero and he can have a gun but he will never be hot or a bad*ss or a girlboss while doing so#he will be shaking trembling crying saying to vecna 'i won't let you ruin anyone else's lives like your ruined mine! etc' before shooting#i want him to stand up for himself. but standing up for yourself does not mean you have to be fearless#shaking my head did we all just forget that el's strength comes from her emotion. from her love#why should will's strength come from anywhere else#he is sensitive!!! stop treating that like an antithesis to strength!!!!!! good grief#will byers shaky with the gun. i rest my case#also i hope you appreciate the dustin meme. i find it unreasonably funny

Your Protector
Summary: You're a shy person but the best at your job on Stark's tech team. A certain soldier joins the team and you stick close to him.
Pairing: Beefy!Bucky x Shy!reader
Warnings: None, fluff :)
Words: 1,392
A/N: written for @the-ss-horniest-book-club ♥️ hope you all enjoy it :) I really didn’t intend on writing so much but this really got away from me.
Tumblr media
You don't really know why you were so smitten with the newest member of the team. There was just something about the quiet man that lured you in. His beefy figure making you feel nothing but safe in his presence. If he wasn't in the room, you would find yourself searching for him and feeling calmer.
You would often watch him sitting on the couch reading a book. His hair would be tied back in a low bun and you were pretty sure he slept, showered and lived in that red Henley of his.
It was so unlike you since you're the shyest member of the tech team. But you're also very anxious and it doesn't take much to scare you. Even a simple thing can make you tremble for hours. You do your job very well and the team of superheroes absolutely adore you. You were more comfortable being open and talkative with Natasha more than the boys. And if Bucky was near, your throat would close up.
Your anxiety and shyness meant you are yet to say a word to Bucky. The things you've learnt about him, such as how he likes his coffee, or what food he likes to eat, you've learnt from conversations from other members.
You've also learnt what movies he enjoys watching. What flavor popcorn he likes the best. The team has also noticed you like to be near Bucky at all times. So it didn't come as a surprise when you asked Natasha if she could talk to Tony about moving rooms so you were closer to Bucky. Which he of course did.
And none of this escaped Bucky's attention. He's also become aware of your quiet presence around him. Sitting next to him during movie nights, at the dinner table, everywhere he was, you would be too. And Steve couldn't keep the shit eating grin off his face when he told him that you had asked to move rooms.
It didn't annoy Bucky at all. He was actually flattered but he failed to understand why. Why did you want to be around him so much? He knew from his observations you were very shy and timid. Was it because he was also quiet? He didn't know.
"Pal, I'm telling you. Watch Y/N sit next to you tonight during movie night." Steve said with a chuckle and a pat on his back. Bucky shook his head, he must be thinking too much into this.
So the members decided to test something, to prove their theory.
Natasha sat next to Bucky on the smaller couch. Tony, Pepper and Sam sat on the larger one opposite. Steve, Clint, Wanda and Vision took the reclining chairs. Which meant there was just the soft large memory foam bean bag to sit on, a seat Sam usually occupied.
Everyone was in their comfy position with their popcorn and snacks. A few minutes later you arrived with your bag of chips to share.
You looked around the room and noticed all the seats were occupied. Especially your favorite seat next to Bucky. Your face dropped and tried not to think too much into it. But thanks to your anxiety, you were wondering if Bucky had specifically asked Natasha to sit there so you couldn't.
Your anxiety was building up and you started to bite on your nail. You stood there, not knowing what to do. Steve's eyes landed on your uncomfortable form and he was worried this was a bad idea. You were trembling and your eyes were glossy.
"Hey Y/N. Come and sit down." Steve motioned to the bean bag. You didn't like the attention, you felt everyone burning holes in your face. But nevertheless, your feet moved on their own accord. You were still biting your nail and you looked down at Natasha and she smiled up at you.
"Hey sweetie." She mouthed and you relaxed slightly. Your eyes flickered over to Bucky and noticed he was staring at the TV, you assumed he wasn't paying any attention but he was. He was waiting to see what you were going to do.
"Can I... Can I sit here please?" You whispered. Your face turning a new shade of red as you felt incredibly uncomfortable in the spotlight all of a sudden.
Natasha gave a knowing smirk and nodded her head. She sat down on the bean bag and sighed, sharing a look with Steve as you took a seat quite close to Bucky.
"Guys! I totally forgot. Should we go and get some pizza to bring back?" Tony suggested as he pointed to the others except you and Bucky.
He needed 8 Avengers to go and get some pizza?
"Great idea. We'll be back in 20!" Sam spoke up.
"Oh and kids. Don't do anything I wouldn't do. It's a new couch." Tony warned and your face heated up at the suggestion. You could barely talk to the man next to you, let alone anything sexy.
When the others left. You and Bucky were sitting in silence. It felt awkward and you didn't know what to do.
You were about to get up and leave when he finally spoke.
"Why are you always near me?"
You blushed and stumbled over your own words. You bit on your nail again and your eyes darted around the room.
"I mean... Why ME exactly?" He pressed. Turning his body so he could face you directly. He noticed your anxiety was going crazy and he felt bad for not wording it lighter.
"I uh... I...uhh..." You were close to crying. You weren't good at forming words and your heart beating itself out of your chest wasn't helping the situation.
"Hey. Calm down, it's alright. I'm not mad okay? It's just me. I'm just curious s'all." His flesh fingers pulled your finger away from your mouth and he noticed the bit of blood pooling on the corner of your nail where you had bitten it so badly. He tucked a strand of hair behind your ear and offered a soft smile. It unfortunately did nothing to calm your nerves though.
“I just feel...safe...with...you.” You blushed and kept your gaze in your lap. Your voice was so quiet that you weren’t sure he heard you.
But he heard you perfectly. Bucky was taken aback by your confession. You felt safe with him? How was that even possible? Had you not heard about the carnage he was responsible for during his Winter Soldier days? The pain he caused hundreds of families when he was sent to assassinate a target? How could you feel safe next to someone like that?
“I.. know it’s weird... I’m weird... I’m sorry.” You whispered and went to stand up. His large hand wrapped around your smaller wrist to keep you next to him. His brows were furrowed as he tried to make sense from all of this.
“You feel safe with me?” He asked. He needed to be sure you didn’t use the wrong words. But by his furrowed eyebrows and straight lips. You were worried you went too far.
“I do.”
“But why?” He asked almost immediately. You licked your lips and gathered your thoughts.
“You’re a big strong man. Quiet, don’t... let harm...come to others.” You were having a hard time finding your quiet voice. “I just feel safe near you.” You offered him a sweet smile, which eventually he returned.
Bucky pulled you into a tight hug and your nose brushed against the stubble that was growing on his throat area. His cologne was strong, but gorgeous. Your hands fisted his henley as he held you. Bucky would never know what made him transition. He had so many questions, but there was just something about you that made him want to protect you at all times. For now, those questions didn’t matter. You were innocent, timid and shy and if you felt safe with him, then he was going to make sure he wrapped you up in bubble wrap to protect you from the evilness of the world.
“I’ll always protect you, doll.” You grinned into his chest at the pet name and you were thankful he couldn’t see the new blush on your cheeks.
He would be your protector. And there was absolutely nothing you could do in the world now, to make him stop protecting you.

Breath of the Wild Daemon!AU
Ok so! I’m working on an actual fic using these concepts and this version of the BotW world, but I thought that maybe some of you might be interested in my ideas so here! I’m putting pretty much everything under a readmore, because this is copypasted from my planning document, which got very long and doesn’t even have anything to do with the plot of what I’m writing ^^’
Enjoy!
Link’s daemon is a Hyrule Field Mouse (lol get it) named Firielore (fih-REE-ehl-ohr), Firi for short. From Fi, Ciela, and Farore. They settled early, when Link first drew the Master Sword. Historically, the Hero most often settles as a wolf, but other forms are not unheard of and he isn’t the first Hero to settle as something more unassuming.
Pre-Calamity, most people, even other knights, thought that Link and Firi’s behavior was odd. Neither of them ever spoke (Link is mute, but Firi can speak and just doesn’t), and Firi was just as stoic and inexpressive as her human. As a mouse daemon, she was always on his person, usually on his left shoulder as was uniform for smaller daemons of knights and soldiers, but was rarely seen out of that position except for when she would turn to increase their field of view or leave him briefly to scout stealthily around corners/over boulders and the like.
Relating to the issues that make him canonically selectively mute, Link’s lack of self preservation re: his Duty translated to Firi as well. Things like stretching their bond too far for too long for the sake of getting the scope of a situation or enemy, but not letting the pain show externally where someone else might be brought to their knees with it. Other things like Firi using herself as a distraction, running from Link’s arm to the Moblin’s to divide its attention and leaving them both exposed to give Link a chance to strike. The monsters don’t know the difference between hitting a daemon vs. its Hylian, and that makes the contact less bad, but not insignificant. There were rumors throughout the castle that Link and Firi had been separated traumatically or that the Master Sword allowed them the distance, but both are untrue- their bond was no different than any other Hylian, they just pushed it further in the name of duty.
Link and Firi’s character development (in the memories) is subtle just like in canon. Through the Yiga attack she is always on Link’s left shoulder, even when they and Zelda are just traveling. On the hill with the Silent Princess is the first time she’s not there- she hops off his shoulder when he crawls forward to look at the flower and she moves closer to it. After Zelda’s failure at the Spring of Power, Firi touches Zelda’s daemon to comfort him, just for a moment.
Firi had and has (Impa gave it to them with the Champion’s Tunic) a small set of custom armor for protection, but rarely wore/wears it; she’s fast enough that any attack that would possibly hit her in battle would probably kill Link as well. On the battlefield she would either deftly scurry around Link and warn him silently about attacks from behind, or slip into a small armored pouch that existed to protect her in one-on-one combat unless an opportunity to assist presented itself. In the present, she doesn’t participate in battle the same way she would 100 years ago (with the aggressive distraction and the like), moreso providing Link extra ears and eyes in a fight.
Post-Calamity, she is considerably more physically active, but she still doesn’t speak out loud- except very occasionally to Link himself. I.e when they first wake up in the Shrine of Resurrection, Link hears Zelda’s voice first and opens his eyes to Firi sitting on his chest, also saying his name. However, she’s still a very quiet daemon, especially considering that Link communicates via signing and it would be considered acceptable for her to talk for him. In Post-Calamity Hyrule she’s more outgoing towards other daemons and will greet them physically if appropriate.
Zelda’s daemon, Hylayrune (hih-LAE-roon), Layrune or Rune for short, is unsettled until the moment she awakens her power, when he settles as a Snowcoat Fox (Real life equivalent: Arctic Fox). His name comes from Hylia (all Zeldas daemons’ names start with ‘Hy’), (La)Nayru, Hyrule, and rune/ruin. Before he settled, he took atypical forms for the sacred princess’ daemon that were more representative of Zelda’s scientific pursuits, such as bugs (usually a bee), frogs, and lizards. Almost always, the Princess settles as a bird of prey (often owl, occasionally eagle or loftwing), or in some cases a small dragon (as the three dragons Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra are said to be the daemons of the three Goddesses, with Hylia’s being most often depicted as a golden dragon or occasionally a huge, golden Loftwing).
Rune’s late settling, and his preferred forms before settling, were a huge cause of anxiety for him, Zelda, and their father. This is all tied into their self-doubt about awakening their sealing power and being able to fulfill her duty as the sacred princess, but it’s also personal for the King. His daemon is a Mountain Crow, which though known to be clever and resourceful are seen as a bad omen, even a curse, within Hyrule. It puts stress on his regime, and the idea that his daughter prefers frogs and lizards over forms that have become symbolic of the royal family and the sealing power is deeply troubling. Rune takes “appropriate” forms only at official appearances and ceremonies, and even then, usually a more wild hawk over an owl, eagle, or dragon.
Other characters:
The Old Man/King: Mountain Crow (real life equivalent: Raven)
Urbosa: Islander Hawk (with kind of a more desert coloration. real life equivalent: Harris Hawk)
Riju: Unsettled, usually a Sand Seal bc they love them
Impa: Blue-Winged Heron (real life equivalent: Great/Little Blue Heron).
Beedle: Hylian Retriever (A golden one, fight me)
Other random stuff/past Links:
- The Princess traditionally settles when she first unlocks/uses her powers, and the Hero traditionally settles when he draws the Master Sword. There are some exceptions, like the Hero of Twilight being old enough to have already been settled, and the Links in games without the Master Sword settling in other ways.
-Hero of Time and Twilight both had Wolf daemons. Their wolf forms are kind of a combination of them and their daemons’ appearances. Time had a lighter colored wolf and Twilight had a darker colored wolf.
    - BUT Hero of Time’s daemon is usually a mouse as a child, when he’s unsettled, alluding to past and future heroes.
    - The mouse thing (here and for the Hero of the Wild) comes less from personality and more from the feeling of facing an enormous dungeon boss as Link, like a mouse about to fight a lion.
-Both the Hero of Wind and Four Swords/Minish Cap Link also had mouse daemons.
    - For Wind this is because of the mobility he needed re: moving on a ship (also kind of like a ship rat? Disclaimer: I’ve never played WW)
    - For Four Swords/Minish this is because he shrinks down and is pretty much the same size as his daemon (she’d have to shrink a little bit too but not as much) and I just think that’d be really cute
-I’m not sure what Skyward Sword!Link’s daemon would be. Not a loftwing because it isn’t possible for anyone but a Goddess or a sacred princess (with Goddess blood) to settle as one, but I’ve never played SS so I can’t really say. It would have to be small enough to ride on a loftwing with him, or a bird of some sort- probably all of the people in Skyloft settled like that, now that I think about it. Maybe a beetle?
-Link from the original games probably has a wolf daemon, as well as LttP/LBW Link.
- Spirit Tracks!Link has a white dove daemon and she rides on his head like the birds in the game and its adorable
-Ganondorf always has a boar daemon in any iteration. When he transforms into Ganon they merge, similar to Wolf Link, but grotesquely instead of dissolving together in Twilight.
-Only the Hylians, Sheikah, and Gerudo have daemons
-The Sheikah have mostly same-sex daemons, with opposite-sex daemons being about as rare as same-sex daemons among the Hylians and Gerudo. No one’s quite sure why.
-The Zora have sort of a connection to their jewelry and weapons, but not necessarily a physical one. More of a literal “put your soul into your craft” type thing, which is why Zora armor is the way it is and most of the Zora have specialized livelihoods like sculpting and smithing.
-The Gorons don’t have a physical Thing, they have a special brotherhood with other Gorons. It’s why you rarely see Gorons traveling too far from Goron City, and almost never alone. They can be alone, like a Zora can be without their craft and affects, but it negatively effects them after a while.
-The Rito have their songs; though not all of them are musically inclined, its a cultural thing and not a physical requirement. Kass would be considered very spiritually aware and expressive, whereas Revali would not, but a non-musician Rito doesn’t suffer for it. There would only be an issue if there were no bards among the entire Rito race, and the songs faded from memory.

D is for Dic- Dictionary
Reader X Brian
| Masterlist |
Words: 1,470
Warnings: profanity
You can’t get your work done, but Brian’s always got your back.
/
As a student, managing work was frustrating. The work itself wasn’t difficult. What was difficult was mustering the sheer amount of patience it takes to not grab the dictionary you’re using and whack a certain dimwit over the head so that he can learn how to define the phrase I’m trying to finish this assignment. The boy only had two classes with you and immediately decided that you were his best friend, following you like a lost puppy.
“(Y/N)!” He shakes his phone in front of your face as you barely get through your second sentence that night. Perhaps, you think as you reluctantly turn to him for the hundredth time, working at the library was a bad idea. “Look!” He’s playing a video on his phone and he glances at you to make sure you’re watching, “this is the video my friends took after I drank too much.” You wince as the on-screen version of him laughs at a shaky camera. “This is after I dumped my girlfriend,” from the corner of your eyes, you see him glance at you for your reaction, but you’re already squinting at your computer screen and trying to ignore the drunk droning coming from his phone.
“(Y/N),” he whines too loud because you’re in a library for goodness sake and the last thing you need is to be kicked out. You eye your dictionary because you’re really, really starting to consider how hard you would have to hit him so that the force will knock him out long enough to finish your assignment if it didn’t kill all his brain cells in one hit, but even then, maybe that was for the best considering how he probably doesn’t have an-
               A cough interrupts your thoughts.
The both of you whirl around. Low and behold, there stands your savior in the form of a tall boy who’s ruffling his mop of bleached hair. A frown is embedded into sharp features as he eyes the nonexistent space between you and your classmate.
“Sorry to interrupt,” he snorts unapologetically, “but can I have some time alone with my best friend please?” He stands unmoving until your classmate falters. The both of you wince at the angry screech of chair meeting floor as he storms out the library.
“Thanks, Bri,” you’re sighing in relief.
“Anything for my bestie,” he grins sheepishly at you, tough Brian gone. “You looked ready to pound him in the head with that dictionary.” You tiredly grin back as he takes the chair beside you. “He should be the one thanking me for saving his life.” Your relief turns into a flood of gratitude because here Brian is, mouth wider than the diameter of the moon, eyes watering as he yawns and you’re reminded of how little sleep he gets.
“Oh,” he remembers why he came to the library in the first place and wrestles with his business textbook before slamming it open and pointing at a heading, “can you explain this?” You hum as you scan the text and for once your brain is able to hear itself think as you quickly explain the chapter. For the next half an hour you both work in peace, just the way you like. But that’s when sh*t hits the fan.
Your classmate and three more of his friends come storming back in. His ‘friendly’ persona is gone and he’s red in the face, swearing, and causing an absolutely unacceptable ruckus.
“There he is!” Your classmates point at Brian and as you watch in alarm as two of them hoist him out of his chair by his arms, dragging him backward. One of his groupies circle like a wolf does a lamb. The stupid f*ck smirks as you stand from your chair, glaring at him.
“What are you doing?” You hiss as you glance around nervously. “This is a libra-“
He interrupts you with a laugh so dumb and so ugly you almost lose all your brain cells and go blind. Almost.
He stalks up to you and leans in so close, you can smell the alcohol in his breath and the stink of his cologne. “I’ll let your bestie go if you promise to go out with me,” he sneers.
You wrinkle your nose in disgust as you tippy toe to peer over his shoulder and exchange a look with Brian. Brian just shrugs back helplessly. You almost miss the look of surprise on your classmate’s face before anger takes its place. “I’m right here,” he snaps as he pushes you back with a little shove.
Just when you’re hoping you can avoid a fight, Jae and the rest of your friends come bristling into the library and you recognize the Superman theme in the song that Sungjin is whistling, that dork.
Dowoon shoves your classmate away from you and Wonpil comes to stand in front of Brian’s capturers, Sungjin in tow. Jae sends you a cheesy grin. Your classmate’s anger grows into a snarl.
“Quit playing superhero. You’re outnumbered,” he’s face to face with an unruffled Jae. You open your mouth to correct that if he could actually count, he was that one that was outnumbered, but no one’s paying attention to you so your mouth snaps shut.
Tension grows as said classmate begins pacing around Jae.
“f*ck off,” Jae snorts coldly. “Can’t take a single no, can you?” He sneers and every hair on your arms stands as you brace for a fight to break out.
“Um, guys, I really don’t thi-“ you start, but your classmate interrupts.
“Shut up!” You glare at him as he raises his arm to punch an unfazed Jae.
“Oh, for f*ck’s sake,” you snap as he grabs Jae’s collar, “listen to me,” but no one pays attention.
“What if I beat you,” he points at you “and take her?” There’s a snort from Brian on the opposite side of the library as he mutters you can try. It earns him a cut on the lip.
Then all hell breaks loose and you’re standing helplessly to the side as people are launching themselves at each other. You spot Brian under a heaping load of dumb*ss and you try to fish him out, but squawk when someone runs into you. You tumble to the ground.
Red. All you see is red. And from the tips of your fingers to every toe on your feet, you feel red, you hear red and all the screaming can. Go. To. Hell.
Maybe that’s when all the exhaustion from the night really gets to your head. With one stride you pick up the closest book, which happens to be the dictionary, and focus on your target.
One breath in and your eyes narrow with all the concentration you were never allowed to have, chucking it with all the force and accuracy as if you had done it thousands of times. One concussion coming right up with a side dish of fried douche bag and a hefty serving of *sshole.
“TAKE THAT, YOU f*ck NUGGET!” you screech at the top of your lungs and the dictionary goes flying. It hits him square on the back of his head and he drops to the floor with a heavy thud. “This is a f*cking library! Fight to death somewhere else, you inconsiderate dildos!” You’re gasping for breath.
Everyone but Brian is staring in frozen shock. The silence is broken as he grins something suspiciously along the lines of I told you so.
___
You brace against the cold winds with your textbook tucked to your side and Brian teasing you on the other.
“Seriously,” he’s almost giggling, “f*ck nugget?” You trudge on miserably as he prances about like a little girl. An adorable little girl. “But, man, you turned into she-hulk back there.”
You ignore him to wallow in your misery instead.
“Brian, I was kicked out of the library,” you whine, “how am I supposed to finish my essay?”
“Yeah, for destruction of property,” he’s wearing a sh*t eating grin. You object. The dictionary’s pages were still intact and technically still could have been used; none of this was even your fault. Each clump of snow is your classmate’s face and you try to kick at them with as little pettiness as you can. Keyword: try.
Another cold wind and you’re shivering so uncontrollably that Brian stops his teasing, catches you by your hand, and tugs you in the opposite direction.
“Let’s go to my dorm to finish up your essay! I have hot chocolate!” He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively. You don’t protest, rather, let him tug you along and somewhere along the way, you see his eyes soften and cut lip turn up as he teases, “Thanks for saving me back there.”
You smile back. The warmth of his hands is enough to melt your heart.
“Anything for my bestie.”
______
A fun fact about this piece was that this was completely based on my own experience. The only difference was that I didn’t have a superhero best-friend Brian *sobs*

winters/liebgott for the ship asks if you're still doing them :) because your fic of them got me hooked on the idea but there is nothing else out there for them!!! :D
Ahhh, I love being the source of all things random, lol.
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter random human:  (For whatever reason, I just can’t picture Dick as a hunter - be it monster hunter or game hunter.  I dunno why.)
Come on now…  Lieb is wolf, through and through.  Ignoring the pack elders who preach a balance of man and beast, Joe spends most of his time as a wolf.  He enjoys the feeling of power, of freedom, and he doesn’t see the big deal.  He hasn’t lost his mind to the wolf, it doesn’t rule him.  Then he meets Dick.
Dick had got lost in his book and totally missed the sun setting.  It wasn’t too late though, and he felt comfortable enough walking home.  It all happened so fast - being shoved to the ground, the glint of a knife, and then, as unbelievable as it seemed, a large, lanky grey wolf leaping from the darkness and taking out his would-be attacker.  There was lots of blood and noises Dick didn’t think he’d ever unhear, and for a heart-stopping second, when eyes turned on him, Dick thought he would be next.
Imagine Dick’s surprise when the wolf didn’t make Dick his next victim, and instead decided to follow Dick home like some hellhound of a bodyguard.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman:
Dick is supposed to be “getting away from it all” and relaxing, but he thinks this trip is having the opposite effect.  He should be enjoying himself in this paradise, but every time he tries to, his mind wanders to the horrors he’s been running from - his men blown to pieces before his eyes, the blood and carnage, the screams.
He signs up for a guided fishing trip and swears he really is losing his mind when he sees mermen watching them.  Dick says nothing to his guide and attempts to enjoy the day, but for once it’s not his memories distracting him.
Lieb thinks the man is rather attractive - for a human - and doesn’t even flinch when their eyes meet.  Rather than raise a fuss, the guy just goes back to fishing, throwing Lieb and his friends glances every now and then, as though checking to see if they’re still there among the rocks and reeds.
Lieb’s only a little surprised when the human shows up again the next day, this time alone.  Though he is pretty shocked when the human starts to talk to him.
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar:
Joe knows that he drives his familiar up the wall.  In fact, his familiar has told him this on multiple occasions.  Joe knows those are the times he’s really fucked up, because the red fox is typically mild mannered and calm to offset Joe’s hotheadedness.
There are days Dick isn’t sure what he’s done to deserve such a fate.  Then he ends up snuggled beside Joe and remembers it’s not all bad.  He really loves Joe, probably more than he should, but there’s not exactly anything he can do about it.  He’s an immortal familiar - an animal - and Joe’s a human man - a man with magic, sure, but still mortal.
Then one day, Dick feels as though he’s being ripped in two, and it’s with horror that he realizes he can’t feel the bond he shares with Joe.  His witch isn’t dead, he can see that with his own two eyes, but someone has severed their connection, and Dick wonders if this is what death feels like.
“Dick?”  Joe’s voice sounds weak.  “Dick, don’t leave me.  Please.  We’ll find the bastards that did this and make them pay.  I swear.  Just, please don’t leave me.”  There’s tears pricking the corner of Joe’s eyes and Dick’s shocked to realize he’s reaching out with a very human hand to wipe them away.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict:
Dick isn’t thrilled about needing a second job, much less that it’s in a coffee shop of all places.  But, right now, he needs the extra money and he can’t be picky.  At least one of the regulars is enough to brighten his day.
Joe comes in every morning about the same time, comic books in hand.  He orders coffee, sometimes their seasonal blends, but never anything more complicated than that.  Then he sits at the corner table and reads for a bit before leaving to his own job - apparently Joe’s the manager for the comic book store just up the block.
Dick has zero interest in comics, but he does have an interest in Joe.
who’s the professor and who’s the TA:
Professor Winters is the guy everyone wants to have a class with.  He’s patient, assertive, and has a way of teaching that just seems to click with everyone.  Including Joe.  After taking one of Winters’ classes his freshman year to fulfill a credit requirement, he’s been scheduling at least one of Winters’ classes for every semester since.  Getting to be the man’s TA?  Well, Joe would be lying if he said he didn’t want an excuse to spend more time with Winters, not that he’s about to admit having a massive crush on the guy too.
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss):
Despite being a prince, Richard never took the easy way out.  He could have allowed himself to be pampered and shielded, barking orders at all those he considered lesser.  Instead, he spent time among his people, listening to them, and training alongside his knights.  He always appreciated that Liebgott never took it easy on him, and has always considered him one of his closest friends of all his knights.  There was his best friend, a nobleman, Lewis, and the head of Richard’s protection detail, Knight Speirs, but Richard liked Liebgott in an entirely different way.  If only their stations didn’t complicate things.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent:
Come on, Dick is the best teacher ever.  Dick started out with a specialty in early childhood education, but he soon became frustrated that school boards didn’t feel the same about what kind of curriculum they needed to be teaching.  They either didn’t have enough faith in the kids and thus went too easy, or pushed standardized testing and bullshit syllabus models.  Dick still gets frustrated, but he thinks being a junior high teacher has helped his sanity and he feels like he’s making a difference at a vital point in these kids’ lives.
Joe is fucking this all up.  He knows it.  No matter how much his buddies Chuck and Tab try to assure him otherwise, he’s fucking everything up with his daughter.  Maddie’s almost a teenager and she needs her mother, not the moron that’s had no clue what to do with a kid the moment Maddie was born - or when her mother died as a toddler.  Now, his precious girl’s acting out, and growing up, and OMG WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SHE GETS HER PERIOD?!  He’s so not ready for this.
Then an angel comes in the form of Maddie’s new teacher, Dick.  Apparently the guy took psychology classes too, or something?  But he realized that Maddie wasn’t a bad kid - as though Joe didn’t already know - and she just had some issues to work out and needed someone to talk to - God, she was too much like Joe at that age.  Joe ends up talking a lot with Dick, who seems to have taken Maddie under his wing, and seriously, Joe feels himself falling hard and fast for this guy who went out of his way to protect Joe’s daughter.
who’s the writer and who’s the editor:
Joe is a brilliant comic book artist and writer.  He’s been published since HS.  He doesn’t need some asshole sitting behind a desk somewhere telling him what’s good and what’s not.  But this guy really takes the fucking cake.  Plot holes?  Shoddy character development?  You gotta be fucking kidding me.
Now, someone go write, like, all of these.  Especially the witch one.

Recently, Australian-bred designer Daniel Patrick presented his self-named Spring/Summer ’18 Collection at the Men’s Capsule + Liberty event. We recently were able to catch up with the designer to speak about his new collection, the struggles of becoming a designer, his favorite hip-hop albums, favorite places to eat & much more. Check out the exclusive interview below.
You are originally from Sydney Australia and moved to California in 2011. What was it about California that attracted you the most? • What are some of your favorite places to eat in LA and NYC? • I actually have a sister who lives in Melbourne, AUS. I plan on visiting her next year. If you could give me 3 places to visit where would they be?
DP: I originally wanted to move to NY before visiting either city, but found LA spoke to me more in terms of the weather and the space, and life was set up to create for me. In saying that, I still love NY but I feel like LA has space for the soul to breathe.
In LA there are so many great places to eat. I love Mastro’s steakhouse, Roku, and EP & LP. In NY, I love La Esquina, Ruby’s and Chelsea Market.
I’m from Sydney so I don’t have too much intel on Melbourne, to be honest, but I can tell you the coffee in Australia is the best.
I noticed you are a big fan of hip-hop. What are some albums right now that you are currently listening to? • Were there any artists that you were surprised to see wearing your brand? • If you could live with 3 Hip-Hop albums for the rest of your life what would they be? • What’s your favorite song right now?
DP: Right now I’m listening to Frank Ocean, Drake and Travis Scott, and their respective latest releases.
Favorite song right now, Drake ‘Signs’ 3 hip-hop albums: Travis Scott – Birds in the Trap Sing Mcknight/Rodeo, Kanye West – 808s and Heartbreak
In terms of artists wearing my clothes, I was surprised when Usher wore it back in 2011, and actually it’s very exciting when I see any new artist wearing my gear.
What are some things that help you get inspired to design?
DP: Listening to music, working out etc. I never really sit down and be like “alright I’m gonna design right now and need to make such and so.” For me, it’s sporadic and ideas just flood to me throughout the day and then I get to work and eventually the collection comes together like that. You make one thing and it inspires another and snowballs to a degree also, and the collection becomes cohesive. Staying busy inspires me and life inspires me.
At what point of your career in fashion did you realize, “oh shit, this is taking off”?
I feel like, to be honest, it has been a gradual increase so it hasn’t felt like a big bang but there was a point where I felt like finally I can do this full-time and month to month rent was not the stress it used to be anymore. That for me was a joy and relief; a joy that I could do what I loved to do every day, and a relief of not having to struggle to make ends meet as I previously had when moving to LA.

What’s one piece from your new Spring/Summer ’18 collection that defines what ‘Daniel Patrick’ is as a brand? • What are some qualities in your brand that are relative to you as a person?
DP: SS18 for me was an evolution of what I feel like ‘Daniel Patrick’ as a brand is representing moving forward. It was the first time since the early days that I held back and made a full collection in one go. It’s funny because so many great pieces missed the cut for the show. I feel more at home with color whereas in the early days of the brand we were merely black and white. Color represents my personality more than the sterility of black and white. Even though I mostly wear black I still like to offset the fit with a bright color sneaker. So one piece that defines what we are about would be hard to pinpoint.
The gym shorts and the track pants would be a couple of staples. The gym bag I really love as it is like a bomber jacket in the form of a bag. I want the brand to be functional designer sport, that is not just stuck in the lane of being activewear but stuff you can wear from the gym to the streets to a night out. I feel that represents me more and my background playing rugby.
Growing up in Australia, sports was a big part of my life. I played every thing—rugby, cricket, athletics and swimming. I was the athlete of the year in primary school and from there went to a sports high school for rugby where we even had rugby as a class subject. My Dad also played pro rugby and there is a bomber jacket in the collection that is a throwback to one of his tracksuit jackets.
What are some things that we can expect to see from ‘Daniel Patrick’ in the near future?
A designer running shoe is in the works. But we are always looking to evolve the brand and create a lifestyle. Slides, toiletry bags, bath robes, homewares, etc.
What makes ‘Daniel Patrick’ different from other high-end fashion streetwear brands?
DP: I feel like we are true to our DNA and our pieces are always recognizably ours even if it is just a basic tee. So details, quality, fabrication, and colors are recognizably ‘Daniel Patrick.’
What advice would give someone trying to get into fashion?
DP: Work hard, be persistent, be consistent, and always look to improve. That for me is huge because nothing can be perfect and you can look at that as a negative or a positive. I look at it like this: if nothing can be perfect then it can always improve, hence I can never get complacent and think something is all that it can be. This doesn’t mean that I don’t deliver the best I can. Quite the opposite, I deliver the best with the knowledge I have and each season with more knowledge under my belt. I deliver the best again with that new knowledge that is a step ahead of the past season. I also try to just focus on me rather than worry about what others are doing.
What’s the worst job you ever had?
DP: I wouldn’t say any job I’ve had is bad, because if one is observing what he can gain from any experience he can learn something that he can apply to what he really wants to do. But I’ve done some jobs I’d rather not do again in saying that. I did construction for a month and getting up at 4:30 am and digging ditches is not easy work, but builds character and I feel a lot of kids these days could learn a thing or two from a hard days work like that. Even that experience is not to be discounted and I was grateful to have that job when I did to pay the bills. It was also a catalyst for me to get out of there and get the line going.
