Head cannons <3
Joly is just too cute to be feared but when others try to pick on him Bossuet and Musichetta are behind him ready to step in.
Combeferre raises insects and everyone loves to watch them grow besides Bahorel, turns out the himbo doesn't like bugs.
Javert covers for Les Amis and get them permits because they are his boys, shut up I'll die on this hill.
Feuilly dressed up as Kitana from Mortal Kombat for Halloween once and killed it.
Courfeyrac, Grantaire, and Bahorel have to be watched when together because they tend to dare eachother to do stupid things for ten dollars. (Once Bahorel pants an Inspector and was arrested. Valjean broke bale and Javert gave all three an earful.)
Grantaire and Combeferre are like beasties (because I love them being close) and they tend to talk in Italian randomly in the middle of conversation which pisses Enjolras off. (The first time he thought the lack of sleep had finally gotten the him)
Enjolras is always being hit on, but he is very oblivious and just think they are being nice and are interested in the revolution so he smiles and talks to them non-stop, takes their late night calls, go on walks with them, and just is so oblivious to it all.
Musichetta eventually becomes the owner of the cafe and everyone was so happy for her, and Bossuet joked about having a sugar Mommy now, which earned a slap from Joly.
Jehan took everyone to a zoo once and he just spent the day by the Pengiuns saying "kowalski analysis" to a penguin who he tried to steal but the honk gave it away. Later Bossuet fell into the dolphin tank when he was booping its nose.
Cosette cried after Gavroche called her sis.
Montparnasse joined R and Bahorel in boxing.
Marius knows how to play the flute, oh how they all laughed about it.
Valjean approves of Eponine
Javert approves of Marius.
Cosette doesn't need their approval
Marius and Eponine do.
Gavroche is like the mother of all tricksters, and javert takes him to jail to show him what happen when you misbehave... somehow javert was locked in a cell while Gavroche sat at his desk eating donuts.
Bossuet once found a ring and returned it to the owner just for the owner to offer up her daughter for him to marry.... Joly was jealous and it was adorable.
Montparnasse knows how to do hair like super well. Like he is a hairstylist underneath that "tough" guy act.
Grantaire had an argument with someone about jumping off a second story building and surviving, so to prove that you would survive he jumped and broke his foot. Joly and Combeferre checked him out and would yell at him if he was walking without any type of support.... Joly threaten to hit him with his cane.
Eponine can hotwire a car as well as open locked doors, she doesn't use it for bad, most of the time.
Enjolras once had a bird land on his hand while they were chilling outside. It made him so happy, he petted it and it chirped a little song. The smile he had on his face was so bright it burned R's eyes and heart. He drew him and the bird (who Enjolras named Patria).
Feuilly grew out his hair once and than cut it to donate it. (First he offered it to Bossuet... he was not amused)
Gavroche stole a horse and found a way to get it in his room where it stayed for a month before someone found it and took it back.
Valjean once lifted Javert up when he refused to give him his seat back and it make Javert so flustered because he did it with such ease.
Courfeyrac kissed Marius on New Years as a joke which made everyone laugh except a very jealous Combeferre.
Grantaire and Combeferre invented a game where they would prank the others and you would get points if the fell for it. (Ex: Grantaire going on a rant about how marvelous the revolution is and how they can achieve everything they sit their mind to. Enjolras made him get a wellness check because he knows that was a whole bunch of BS.) (Another Ex: Combeferre talk about how he misjudge Napoleon, which made Marius so happy just for it to come crashing down.)
Cosette is a very crafty person and she makes very cool things for her Papa. She made a sweater for him once and he loves it.
Valjean is also a crafty person so he made Cosette a beautiful figure of a cat.

Japan day 1!
Started our day walking around Osaka castle and the gardens around it. It was raining but pretty. I loved the ivy moat and light up fish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the castle we went to the aquarium. I loved how close we were able to get to penguins, but the highlight was learning about these hilarious garden eels in a room dedicated to cute fish. They bob up and down to catch food off the current. Ingot a little keychain/ornament of one (and a little seal plate because I have no self control)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the aquarium we got Japanese pancakes, okonomiyaki, that has cabbage and eggs.
We then had time to kill before teamlabs at the botanical gardens so stopped at this little shopping street that randomly had an observatory that was weirdly Billikens themed and overall a weird and hilarious time. And a cool observatory
The team labs botanical gardens was a light up interactive garden that was super fun. When you walked by or pushed the installations the colors would change and spread to the other installations. It was a little rainy but otherwise wonderful
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got dinner at a yakinuki, where you grill your own meats and it was so delicious. The lights in the street of Osaka were so pretty near our hotel. I’m having so much just walking around and seeing the different street vibes.
Tumblr media
And now my overly long travel diary write up under the read more. I will not subject your feed to my word vomit, but I want it
Day 1 11/10
Slow wake up and some quality time with my boyfriend. We were going to do a day trip to Nara but decide it’s raining too much for that.
We head out and grab convience store food fo breakfast from Lawson. I get chicken nuggets and a pastry. And the chicken nuggets are shockingly good. My bf had said they were the best chicken nuggets he ever had and I’m still surprised by how good they are. The pastry is also delicious. We then wander around the Osaka castle gardens and see the outside of it. But we don’t have time to go in before our aquarium time. We do pay 200 yen a piece to go into a special section of the gardens. We see a cat chilling in one of the temple buildings. The leaves are pretty as are the grounds but it’s a bit of dreary day
The aquarium really funnels you through a certain path. Some of the exhibits get very crowded with everyone bunches up trying to see. The later exhibits have more viewing porta so things spread a bit. I loved seeing the dolphins and the giant tank with pacific creatures. There are gorgeous stung rays and some really giant mackerels. There’s also an ocean sunfish which is my favorite.
The best part tho was the “cute room” they had the finding Nemo fish and dory dish and the personal highlight of garden eels. They bury half their body in the sand and then bop up and down to eat plankton. It was so wild watching them go up and down like little wack a moles and swing their heads about eating. They looked like they should be in a childrens show. I acquired a stuffed one to use as a Christmas ornament from the gift shop. I also get a plate with seal faces on it. Idk what I’ll do with the plate but it’s adorable so it’s fine. 5.96 total
After the aquarium we grab food from the nearby mall. We get okanami pancakes. I get pork egg and cheese and bf gets pork and squid.
After lunch we start to head to the team lab botanical gardens but stop at a shoppingish area along the way. We walk for a bit and there’s a giant observatory tower. We decide to get tickets since the wait isn’t long. It’s one of the weirdest themed things I’ve ever done. It is all about the Billikens. And everything on the top floor is gold and everything on the second floor is disco and everything is so delightfully kitschy. On our walk through the levels in the way I take a picture with my head in a Billikens hole. It’s so weird but so fun.
Then we head to our garden tickets.
It starts to rain on our walk from the subway to the gardens but luckily it lightens up soon after we get there.
We walk around and play with the interactive blogs of light.
On the way back the by makes a reservation for dinner for nine. We stop at the hotel and I take a 30 min until it’s time to leave.
Dinner is grilling. The wagu beef and the flavor salt is so so good. I actually really enjoy the kimchi and most of the bimpap but there’s a couple flaovurs in there that aren’t my favorite. Tomorrow we will go to kyoto.

Entry 3
Date: 4/26/2024 Approx. Time Frame: 10:56am-11:50am Days Since First Contact: 10 Locations Visited: 4 - Tsubu Woods - Secret Inlet - Amile Forest - Nest Creatures Sighted: - Finfin (With picture!) - Heartbird - V-Rex (Sound only) - Palm Tree Snake (With pictures!) - Unidentified dolphin-bird - Piki Seal (With pictures!) - Floating Flora (With pictures!) - Shulu Bird (With picture!) - Windy Bird (With pictures!) - Hawatchi-Bird (With picture!) - Finfin Jr. (With pictures!) - Blue Eye (With picture!) - Pokari (With pictures!) - Hoverfly (With pictures!) - Finnina (With pictures!)
Notes and sightings under cut. Notes I deemed important are in pink bold italics. As you can see, I took a lot of pictures today, so this entry may be longer than normal. I will make separate posts of the pictures for each creature later.
Tsubu Woods - Visited Finfin in Tsubu Woods - He was in the middle of flying around the right tree and singing - He flitted around for a bit before returning to the right tree and singing his song again - Finfin left, now there is only the sound of howling wind - Picture of the Tsubu Woods today (~11am)!
Tumblr media
[Similar but notably different color from my picture in Entry 1] - The wind stopped. Now, only silence. Eerie...
Secret Inlet - Noting the Tsubu Wood's color reminded me to check the Perna Lotus Flowers, relating to an odd observation back in Entry 2 where they just disappeared out of nowhere - The lotuses are still absent. Maybe rollover to Late April really did occur at a bizarre time back then - Heartbird sighting - I heard V-Rex! No visuals to accompany it that I saw. I know in Rem River Bank, you can see V-Rex in the background sometimes, but I didn't spot anything in the background here - Palm Tree Snake! Took some pictures of her majesty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Can you tell she's my favorite?] - Unidentified dolphin-bird stuck their head out of the water and sighed. Who are you??? I've heard speculation, but I need confirmation! Tell me your name! - Piki Seal! Grabbed a couple pics! Here's one of them
Tumblr media
[How darling! I wonder if it's looking for Finfin]
Amile Forest - Caught up with Finfin in the Amile Forest - He was on the close branch when I arrived, but when I offered a yellow Lemo Fruit, he flew off to the far treetop - He soon flew to the left branch, and I took a pic (~11:20am)!
Tumblr media
[Something to note is that the clouds in the background are in these sort of cirrus shapes] - We had a nice moment as I dictated out loud while writing my notes and Finfin listened - Finfin flew away. See you later! - A lovely little plant driften across my screen! Got a bunch of pictures! Here are a couple of them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Seems to be a Floating Flora. It seems to be orange instead of the light pink seen in the Encyclopedia. Maybe color is random or seasonal?] - Shulu Bird! It's far in the distance, but I grabbed a picture anyway
Tumblr media
[I probably won't make this one into its own post, given the quality] - Windy Bird! Took some pictures, here are a couple
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[It appears to be green instead of the blue coloration in the Encyclopedia. I guess it's a similar situation to the Floating Flora] - Hawatchi-Bird! Got a picture
Tumblr media
[Lots of birds today!]
Nest - Finfin Jr. was already outside of the den when I arrived!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Just chilling!] - He soon kinda danced in place while singing softly
Tumblr media
[Getting lost in his own music] - After a bit, he turned around and walked towards the water, showing off his cute back stripes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Bright green and beautiful!] - Blue Eye sighting with a picture!
Tumblr media
[Seems like it's enjoying the partly cloudy weather on Teo right now!] - Pokari sighting! Got a bunch of pictures, here's my favorite!
Tumblr media
[Even Finfin Jr. looked on at it!] - I am so scared for Finfin Jr.... He got so close to the lemodoki on the right multiple times. I kept thinking he was going to try to eat it - Hoverfly! Got a couple of pictures of it and Finfin Jr.!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[I think it's stated in the Encyclopedia that Hoverfly and Finfin are friends. I wonder if they will be, too] - Seems like Finfin Jr. is trying to get the hang of flying!
Tumblr media
[He got a little bit off the ground for a while, just gotta work on that endurance!] - Finfin Jr. kicked a rocked up in the air, and it landed on his head. The poor thing began crying. Pictures if you're a miserly old coot who loves to see children in distress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Would it be a bad look to post these pictures separately? Eh, I'll decide later] - Finfin Jr. went back to the den and is calling out. Finfin come pick up your son from soccer practice - Finnina's here!
Tumblr media
[Momma's here to save the day!]
Tumblr media
[Nevermind...?]
Tumblr media
[Oh, she's just getting fish for Finfin Jr.!] - Finnina fed Finfin Jr.! Cute - I think Finnina has it from here. I'll leave them be

Masterlist // Read Before Requesting
(GIF NOT MINE)
Tumblr media
Ethan sat in his gaming chair in front of his monitors spinning side to side as he read the chat that was gliding up one of his screens.
“Spidie-cents, thank you for the bits!” He calls, eyes still following the words coming in.
He’d had an average day, nothing too outstanding and interesting about it. So why not spice things up with a surprise stream?
“When am I playing Among Us again? I don’t know. Hopefully sometime soon. I’ve been trying to get a lobby going with Seán, Corpse, Chris, and the rest of the usual bunch.”
He takes a sip of his water and checks his phone real quick. Nothing. He sighs and sets it back on the table, looking up at the chat.
“Are me and Y/N dating?”
Ethan becomes visibly uncomfortable at the question. “Uh, no. We just live together. Not dating.”
Chat goes wild, teasing him and asking a thousand more questions.
Ethan struggles with reading while the chat is going so fast. Only making out different ship names and heart emotes.
“Guys. Guys. Calm down. I can’t read chat.”
There’s a soft knock on his recording room door. “Yeah?” Ethan calls out. You step in, looking slightly shy and nervous. The stream can’t see you, which your thankful for. But they can see the way Ethan is looking at you. Smiling with loving eyes and excitement running through him.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Oh, am I interrupting?” You ask, concerned.
“Oh. No, your fine. What do you need?” He reassures
“Well, I was gonna see if - when your stream ends - you would want to come play some Mario Kart with me? And maybe order some takeout?” You’re fidgeting with your hands, trying to maintain eye contact.
Ethan smiles warmly and nods enthusiastically. “Yes! Totally. I’m ending my stream in about an hour,” he checks his phone for the time, “is that okay?”
You grin. “It’s perfect. Thank you. I can’t wait.”
Ethan expresses the same feelings before you both say goodbye and you leave the room, giddily preparing to order food.
✩ ✩ ✩
Ethan comes downstairs after his stream, excited for a game night with you.
You’re sitting on the couch, scrolling through your phone. You’re wearing a pair of dark grey sweatpants that you might or might not have stolen from Ethan, a black spaghetti strap shirt, and a silver chain necklace Ethan had gotten you for your birthday last year.
He smiles at the memory of you opening the box he’d been holding behind his back, gasping and giggling and completely at a loss for words.
You struggled for a few minutes trying to find a way and thank him for such a beautiful piece of jewelry.
You look up from your phone and smile wide. “Hey,” you greet, “whatcha smiling about?”
Ethan looks into your eyes. “Nothing, just thinking about your birthday present I got you.”
You absentmindedly reach for the chain resting on your chest and play with it, smiling.
“Thank you, again.”
He shakes his head, grinning, and saunters over to the couch. Ethan flops down beside you, placing his arm behind your shoulders on the back of the couch.
He slides down slightly, spreading his knees and rubbing a thumb on your shoulder bone opposite him.
Chills cover your body at every little gesture Ethan does. Especially the way his arm is around you and his thigh is pressed flat against yours. Your cheeks heat up and you pretend to focus on your phone.
“U-uh the food should be here soon. In ten minutes maybe,” you look over at Ethan.
He looks back at you, a goofy smile on his face. “Nice,” he squeezes your body against his with his arm and rests the side of his head on top of yours.
You start to get ready for a round of Mario Kart, choosing your characters and load outs and then moving on to which cup you should play.
“What cup do you wanna play?” You look over to Ethan.
“Well, I believe there’s only one good answer - the greatest cup out of the entire game.”
“The Star Cup.”
“The Bell Cup.”
You both blurt at the same time.
“What?” You ask incredulously.
“Star Cup?!” Ethan looks at you, shocked.
“What do you mean ‘Star Cup’? It’s the best one! It’s got Dolphin Shoals - which is hands down the best map in the game, Mount Wario, and Sunshine Airport. That’s the big three all in one cup!” You flop your hand to your thighs for dramatic effect.
“No. No. No. No. See, I hate to break it to you - but that’s where you’re wrong.”
You raise a questioning eyebrow and cross your arms over your chest.
“The best map on the game is Wild Woods, but the rest of the maps on the Crossing Cup suck. So that leaves Ribbon Road, Super Bell Subway, and Big Blue which are a trifecta of greatness.”
You shake your head. Before you can retort - there’s a knock on the door. The food has arrived. You thank the delivery person and grab the food, taking it to the living room and sorting out your’s and Ethan’s food.
“At least we can agree that Bowser’s Castle is the absolute worst,” you say, setting Ethan’s box in front of him. He nods his head, agreeing.
“Yes. Definitely.”
You both decide on Ethan’s Bell Cup first, eating your food and goofing the whole time.
✩ ✩ ✩
Halfway through the night Ethan realizes that he’s losing. In a desperate attempt to redeem himself; he snakes an arm around you and begins to tickle your side.
You jolt upward, almost throwing your controller while trying to fight him off.
“E-Ethan!” You cackle. “St-op!”
While you’re distracted, Ethan manages to send a blue shell your way and slowly crawl his way up to first.
You press the pause button and catch your breath. You both set your controllers on the coffee table and look at each other.
You’re panting and smiling at the goofy man next to you. “That... was so... unfair,” you accuse breathlessly.
“You never told me to play fair,” Ethan states like the five year old he is, smiling like a dork.
You roll your eyes and get up to throw your box of food away. Before you can get to it, there’s a hand gently in yours, pulling you towards him.
You crash into Ethan’s lap, giggling. “Lemme put my food in the trash,” you look up at him.
“In a minute,” Ethan looks down at you, pulling you closer to his chest - hugging you. You bury your face into his shirt, inhaling his scent. Your body relaxes into him and you smile to yourself.
This is all you could ever want in life. You and Ethan, holding each other, at peace. Then reality sets in. And you realize that you couldn’t be truly happy like this. Just friends.
All this is - is one friend holding another friend. And that’s all it’ll ever be. No ‘I love You’s. No kisses. No holding each other in bed every night. Just friends being friends.
You feel tears welling in your eyes and you try and hold them back but before you can Ethan pulls back to look at your face, smiling.
His face falls at the sight of yours, being replaced by fear and concern.
“Hey. Hey, what’s wrong? Did I do something?” He grabs your face, looking into your eyes.
A tear slips down your cheek and you shake you head but Ethan knows better. “No. Talk to me. What’s wrong?” He asks again.
You take a deep breath and move his hands from your face. “I—” you start but decide against it. Having no idea how to tell him. And do you really want to ruin your friendship?
Ethan’s eyes plead with you and there’s no way you can refuse him.
“It’s just,” you take a deep breath. “I don’t think I can do this,” you admit gently.
“Do what?” Ethan asks, concerned.
“Be just friends with you. It hurts too much to keep going,” another tear slips out. “I see you every day and I’m filled with this overwhelming sense of loss. And the pain in my chest everytime you look at me is so overbearing and I can’t keep putting myself through this every single day,” you look away from him, closing your eyes tight.
“Especially when I know you don’t feel the same. That’s the worst part about it, Eef. Knowing you’ll never feel the same,” you collapse into his chest, crying.
Ethan places a hand on your back, moving the other to the base of your skull and kisses the top you your head.
“Hey,” he says, softly. “Look at me.”
You look into his eyes, your own red and puffy.
“Who said I’d never feel the same?”
“What?” Your face contorts in confusion.
“Y/N, I’ve felt that exact way about you for so long. You have no idea...”
Your heart melts and you smile. “Really?” You wipe a tear from your cheek.
Ethan uses his thumb to wipe away your other tears and smiles. “Yes. Really.”
He slowly starts to lean in and you grin. “I think I do have an idea of what it was like.”
Your lips connect and move together in a sweet dance of love and tender longing.
You pull away and giggle, pressing your forehead against his.
You wrap your arms around his neck and pull him to the side, laying with him on the couch. You kiss him for longer this time with more intent.
“Can I go throw away my food now?” You almost whisper.
“As long as you take mine with you.”

You Send Me Flying
Chapter Six
Author’s notes: co-written with @nature-and-music, beta’d by @lady-jane-revisited. Based on The Dirt movie, as I don’t have the book yet. Warning: language.
I offered to go without hesitation, so long as I could be as far away from Tommy as possible. As I made my way down the stairs, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn’t shake the image of her from my dream last night, in that lingerie and how she made me hers. I tried to stifle these stupid feelings, especially the sensation of my blood rushing, and reminded myself that I would get in, get out, and go back upstairs. After knocking on the door, I heard the locks unlatching, and she opened up the door until the chain stopped her.
“Oh Mick, good morning!” she proclaimed with surprise and excitement in her voice.
The words were there, but they were trapped in my voice box. Even though I could see a little bit inside, I could see that she was wearing nothing but a towel tightly wrapped around her body. Her hair drenched and clinging to her face.
“Here, I’ll unlock the door. You can come in, just let me just get something on,” she quickly shut to unlatch the chain and then reopened it, welcoming me into her domain.
She mentioned that a fresh pot of coffee was ready and that I could help myself to the fruit bowl on the table. I gave her a quiet thank you as she headed back to her room. I caught a glimpse of her legs, still wet and so soft looking. I shook my head and distracted myself by looking over at the fabrics that were scattered about in the living room. There was an interesting mixture of her work being both organized and disorderly as I took in what I saw. I checked out the sketches on the couch and slid my fingers across the fabrics for my stage clothes; she was really talented.
She returned, “Sorry, did you need something?”
When I turned back to her, my heart rate increased. She stood there wearing an Aerosmith shirt and red dolphin shorts. Her wet hair was dripping onto her shirt, causing parts of her covered chest to become slightly transparent. She glanced down at herself, she felt self conscious as she pulled down on her shirt even though she was clothed.
She chuckled slightly in embarrassment, “Um… I haven’t done laundry in a couple days. This is all I have that’s clean right now. So what did you need?”
I stepped closer to her, she hardly moved a muscle, save for her eyes as they widened. I started deeply into her eyes and she did the same with me. I felt her hands on my waist, sliding up my torso and resting on my shoulders even as uncertainty shone in her wide eyes. My own hands wrapped around her middle, bringing her closer to my body. Our lips were just inches away from touching, all we could feel was the heat of our breaths. Our faces leaned in as we shared a soft kiss. Her arms slithered around my neck, her fingers burying themselves into my hair.
My grip around her tightened as I felt myself becoming hard, though she didn’t seem to back away. Our lips parted for a moment to allow us to take in a little bit of air, only for them to collide once more. One of my hands reached down to caress her supple thigh, my fingers centimeters away from touching her rear. I could feel her mouth opening up tentatively, silently giving me permission to lather her tongue and so I did. The vibrations of our moans rippled throughout our bodies and I grunted when her teeth bit down on my lower lip, pulling away from me as I moaned. I gave her thigh a slap and she quietly mewled, burying her face into my neck.
“Holy shit!”
We released each other and backed away as though nothing had happened. We turned to see, to our horror, Tommy standing in the open doorway completely awestruck with his jaw hanging low and his eyes wide open. He looked as if he saw the most terrifying sight in his young life. Well one thing’s for sure, his life was about to end indefinitely as I quickly ran after him back up the stairs, leaving poor Y/N/ behind. Tommy’s scream practically woke up the entire apartment complex as I chased after him. Nikki simply stood there and enjoyed watching the chase, casually following us to the shared bedroom. I was quick to grab the drummer by the wrist, but not quick enough to get the rest of him since he threw his towel in my face and swiftly locked himself in the bathroom.
“Open up this door Tommy! Open it you motherfucker!” I shouted, violently banging.
He was panic-striken, “No fucking way man! Not a chance!”
“You open this goddamn door right now!”
Vince was well awake, “What the fuck is happening right now? Mick what are you-”
I was too busy to acknowledge him, especially as he walked over.
Vince looked at me, “What is happening?”
Tommy was about to say something, but that only caused me to hit the door even harder, hoping to drown out the description of what he saw. There was no way I was going to let this come out, and from Tommy of all people! I was suddenly held back by my other bandmates. They told me to knock it and to chill out, that it was too early for this and that I’d end up waking the neighbors. As if they really cared what a bunch of denizens would say.
Tommy finally got his chance, “Mick made out with her! I saw them!”
Vince and Nikki held on tighter, refusing to let me go until I calmed down. I was like a bull ready to charge, but they refused to let me go, so I just yelled: “You fucker! I’m going to kill you!”
“Mick! Tommy! That’s enough!” We heard the familiar voice yell from the living room. “Mick stop!”
Like a trained animal, I heard her call and I stopped dead in my tracks. I could feel the strain of my muscles as a result of being held, my throat felt sore and dry, and my anger slowly started to dissipate. I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me as I slowly turned my neck to see her. Nikki and Vince backed away from me and I heard the bathroom door open, however she hurried to move my line of sight away from Tommy, holding my face in her hands. Her expression was a blend of anger, shame, and discomfort
“Mick, calm down. It’s okay.” she pleaded, her thumbs brushing my cheeks.
I could feel a sense of stillness when she spoke to me like that. I lost control of myself and she was here to bring me back to a more stable state, “I… uh, I...”
She held onto me, “Mick, just don’t do that again. The first show is coming up and you all need to work with each other.” She released me and marched over to Tommy, pointing a finger at him, “And you, enough with your jokes!”
Tommy nodded like a frightened child, gulping down his fear, hoping that this would all end soon and he could get himself dressed. She never took her eyes off mine as she addressed Tommy and Vince to get dressed. I could hear the singer complain about not getting his shower yet, but they both went back to their rooms. Nikki stood there smirking like an idiot.
“What are you looking at, bass player?” I snapped, though not as heated as I looked over at him.
He shook his head, still with that stupid smirk plastered on his face. “Nothin’, man.” And went back into the kitchen.
She leaned in and kissed me softly when everyone had gone, pulling back before it could turn heated and took my hand in hers, leading me to the couch. I moved slower than usual and winced slightly in pain, hiding it when she looked back at me with concern. We reached the couch and she instructed me to turn around with my back facing her. I opened my mouth to argue, but she gave me the same look I usually give the guys when they annoy the hell out of me. I closed my mouth and turned around for her.
She reached under my jacket and shirt, carefully pressing her palms against my back as she began to massage the muscles. I bit my lip to keep from making any sounds, but as she worked out the tension and aches, I let out a long deep moan I hadn’t meant to. Her hands were still, holding me in place so I couldn’t turn back around to see her expression, but I could hear her lightly shaking breath.
“Mick...”It was a breathless whisper of my name from her lips.
“Ok, I love you both and I’m happy for you. But, please, no sex on my couch, man!” Nikki laughed as he barged into the moment.
She slid her hands down my back, sending shivers down my spine as she stood up, just in time for the other two to come out of their rooms.
“Alright guys, let’s go get your boots!”

Henlo all! This is my contribution to @burnthoneymint‘s birthday challenge! I hope you will enjoy it! Thank you Sil for hosting this wonderful event, and a very early happy birthday to you <3
Prompt:  Prompt: Person A gets injured on their birthday so they have to stay in, Person B tries to cheer Person A up.
I took some liberties with the prompt but the main idea of it is still there! I hope you don’t mind love  (´。• ᵕ •。`) 2nd person. Fem Reader. Mentions of injuries. Other than that, fluff!
Tumblr media
Ace was a ball of youthful energy. Always up for new adventures, always up for fun times. So when you had announced you maybe wanted to do something for your birthday this year, he had gotten to overenthusiastically planning out a bunch of unrealistic concepts. Multiple times you had to step on the break for him and remind him that: a, you were on a ship in the middle of the ocean, b, you would not be stopping for supplies anytime soon and c, that you still would have chores and such to do.
Ace pouted a little at the way you managed to block off all his huge party ideas, but had to admit that you were right about it all. You were snuggling in bed when you told him what you would appreciate most:
“What if we swap chores with someone so we have a day to ourselves? Maybe we can convince Thatch to make me a special birthday meal and y’know… just hang out? It has been a while since we’ve had some time for just the two of us.”
Ace let out a hum in response. Sure, you had a point, and sure, it sounded like a great plan, but was this really how you wanted to spend your birthday? It was nothing more special than any other day off, save for the special meal that he wasn’t even sure Thatch would have the time for. He looked at you as you turned around in his arms, your eyes bright with the expectation for him to agree with your (simple) plan. He simply couldn’t resist those puppy eyes and nodded, dipping down to place a soft kiss on your lips. “Sure, if that’s really what you want y/n” “Yes Ace, it’ll be perfect.”
Your last words were muffled a little as you nuzzled into his chest more, enjoying his warmth now that it was slowly getting colder outside. Already looking forward to a minimalistic birthday celebration, it did not take you long to fall asleep.
Of course, Ace followed suit, his talent to be able to sleep anywhere even when he didn’t get a narcoleptic spell kicking really fast with you snuggled up to him. But not before formulating a little plan in his head. If you didn’t want a big celebration, he’d accept your wishes, but he couldn’t help but try his best to make it a little more special than you had hoped for.
----
The days leading up to your birthday he assured you that he would take care of the meal and the choresswap, even taking over other people’s chores so yours wouldn’t be switched but taken over altogether. You were a little suspicious at his eagerness to arrange all the things for you, but you let him take care of it all without saying too much about it, you figured he was a little sad he couldn’t make his big plans come true and was now trying to compensate by fulfilling your smaller wishes as much as possible.
You watched as he haggled chores with fellow crewmates and even other commanders. You noticed how he spent quite a lot of time in the kitchen, trying to convince Thatch to spend a little extra time on something for you, just to make your day perfect. It was not clear if he had succeeded in his mission when the night before your birthday came up, but when he joined you in your shared bed, he had a slightly mysterious and satisfied-looking smile on his face.  You decided against interrogating him, enjoying some cuddles and already feeling giddy about having a day for just the two of you when waking up. It would be perfect!
The start of the day was in fact, perfect! Ace had gently woken you up with some breakfast in bed, singing some kind of happy birthday tune completely off pitch with a slight rasp in his voice, he had woken up a little early just to make sure his preparations were all done, and hadn’t spoken yet. You giggled at the whole thing, his morning voice was attractive, the breakfast delicious and the singing hilarious.
After you got dressed and ready for the day, Ace announced that he had one surprise for you. Your eyes immediately narrowed in suspicion.
“That wasn’t the deal Ace!” “Ssshhhhhhh, it’s your birthday, you deserve some special things! Don’t worry, it’s nothing too elaborate, I promise. ”
You sighed and followed him along the deck, only to end in a familar place: the back deck where his striker was. “Look, there will be something special happening nearby, so I figured we’d go on a tiny ride. It’s still following your plan of quality time, and we will be back in time to chill and enjoy your special birthday meal. ”
He seemed so enthusiastic, so full of hope, that even if you wanted to act a little mad for him not following your agreement, you couldn’t stop the corners of your lips from turning upward. “Fine, I’ll indulge you on your little surprised joyride. But only because that means I can hold you close for a little more.”
A slight blush tinted Ace’s freckled cheeks as he smiled widely, a triumphant ‘Yessss’ leaving his lips. He readied the striker for the ride, helping you get on as well. You wrapped your arms tightly around his upper body and got ready for the ride, you knew how reckless he got when he was enthusiastic.
Ace was indeed a little reckless in his steering, but never dangerous, not even when you neared a part closer to an island, the water shallow enough to have all kinds of rocks sticking out of it. He carefully maneuvered in between some of them, before stopping in front of one that was large enough for the both of you to sit on. He helped you up, and joined on the spot next to you in silence, and once you both were settled you looked at him with a questioning look.
“This is nice but wh-” “Oh! The show has already started!”
Ace pointed to a point a little further from you, and you saw something you hadn’t noticed before in your fear of him hitting one of the rocks. You had been too focussed on the potential hazard as well as the island nearing that you hadn’t noticed a huge school of dolphins, all rapidly swimming and leaping out of the water, almost as if to put on a performance for the two of you. Your mouth fell open in a surprised o-shape.
“They are always here apparently, I heard about it when we were on the previous island but didn’t think we’d get close enough in time. It was Marco’s idea to take the striker.”
You smiled.
“It’s a wonderful surprise, thank you Ace..” you turned to him to give him a proper kiss to thank him, when you noticed his eyes glazing over.
Shit. Not now.
It wasn’t the first time you had seen the subtle change that indicated that he was about to pass out, but you were too late calling out his name so he could prepare, and he slumped forward. You reacted on instinct, hooking your leg behind a protruding piece of rock and grabbed your boyfriend quickly, before he’d make contact with the seawater. You succeeded in your mission of saving your boyfriend,  but you heard a nauseating crack when you leaped forward, a white-hot pain spreading through your leg immediately. You let out a loud yelp, which woke up Ace immediately, completely disoriented and a little confused.
“Y/n! What happened?” He clambered back onto the rock, too confused to spot your leg yet, while you felt the tears spring in your eyes. You tried to bite them back, but your leg hurt a lot, you weren’t even sure if you’d be able to remove it from its awkward position without suffering. “You fell asleep and I helped you,” you replied through gritted teeth, the wonderful dolphin show now completely forgotten,  “Ace, I think I broke my leg.”
Ace then finally noticed the strange position you were in and his eyes widened in a panic. For the next few minutes the both of you tried to figure out what to do and how to get you back onto the striker without causing you too much pain. The best and seemingly only solution was Ace straight up lifting you up from the rock so you wouldn’t have to move much, and he held onto you as he got back onto the striker, apologizing through the whole ordeal.
“I am so sorry I ruined your birthday, it was meant to be a little surprise, and I just fell asleep like an absolute idiot, I am so sorry y/n.” He repeated it as if it was a mantra, and you felt back because you heard the agony in his voice. And while your leg was still hurting like hell, you didn’t want him to think that he had completely ruined your day. After all, it was only morning still.
“Tell you what Ace. You’re going to drop me off at Marco’s and he’s gonna help me fix that leg. Then, you will carry me to our room and we’re going to do what I had planned for my birthday all along: cuddle and be lazy together. If we’re feeling adventurous we can watch the sunset on deck. No need to do anything crazy” “Are you sure y/n? It’s not that exciting, and I had many more small things planned…”
“Ace, as long as I am with you, I honestly don’t care how we spend my birthday.”
You swore you saw his eyes gloss over momentarily before he regained composure with some new-found courage. “Okay, I will do whatever it takes to make this your best birthday still, even though I started out on the wrong foot”
“You sure you want to use that expression Ace? It’s not even correct” You raised a brow but let out a small laugh, almost forgetting the pain in your leg. “SORRY!!!!”
You knew he was gonna do his best. And you knew it was going to be a great birthday anyway. Broken legs or not.

ani....morphs.....
ok so picking up after the david trilogy, which hit hard as FUCK, we have book 23, which basically was a semi truck that ran over my corpse, jesus christ, they really followed up the david trilogy w/all that....
23 was so so good and also painful. its the culmination of a lot of tobias’s characterization in the series thus far and also we finally get the reveal we’ve been waiting for about elfangor....ooooh man
and there was a lot of painful stuff in this book but the worst imo was tobias wondering if it were possible that somebody wanted him and would take care of him, only to have it all come crashing down in the worst way when it turned out aria was visser three in morph, ouch.
that was so brutal augh. and when he figured it out and just crash landed and kept thinking about how he wanted to die and how he was stupid to think he could have a home...bro get these kids some THERAPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so yeah that book was absolutely brutal but also so good...and it further fleshed out the animorphs working as a near-flawless team, w/the whole setup of tobias meeting w/the lawyer being so airtight and well-planned
also more free hork bajir!! its cool that there's stuff happening w/them offscreen, I like that
I literally had to take a break from reading the books bc the david triology + 23 was like so much, and also bc the olympics were on and all my time got dedicated to watching those, but then I opened 24, not sure what to expect, and BAM it was the helmacrons lmaoooo
I don't even remember the helmacrons but ig a lot of people hate them? lmao so that whole reputation preceded the book and I was like oh wow time for a change in tone
which wasn't wrong but also I liked that book?? I was never bored, even tho the whole thing was patently ridiculous and also had very little bearing on the overarching story
but I think it would be a standout if it were a TV episode w/a good budget - the visuals were amazing even in text, and I can imagine all the cool shrinking/growing/cellular stuff would be WICKED cool visually (ideally 2d animation but an ant man-esque live action adaptation wouldn't be terrible if they had the budget for it)
whatever let me dream. so yeah I didn't hate the helmacron book even tho the helmacrons themselves were...sure something. lmao I think they come back? that should be interesting
next book is the arctic one, we have yet another alien of the week style adventure - I liked this one too, it felt like more plot-y stuff happened since they destroyed the base, and marco’s POV is always fun
I do find it funny/interesting how sometimes when the animorphs do something - like in this book, destroying that base in the arctic - it doesn't really seem to impact the yeerks much/it doesn't get brought up much after that. and then other things like them destroying the ground-based kandrona get mentioned a lot (that example is understandable tho bc that WAS a big deal). its just hilarious to me how blowing up entire building complexes has become so routine that it isn’t even worth mentioning at this point
Also I adore when they meet other random people/kids and are chill w/them, like w/that kid they met in the rain forest earlier on w/the time travel
the descriptions of the brutally cold weather were great. I hate the cold so I was like oof this is a nightmare lmao
also ig that was the first ghostwritten book and I did kinda notice it was slightly different than usual? maybe? I could be imagining it tho
okay but book 26 tho...BOOK 26. bruh
that was SO good and I really didn’t know what to expect - but when we finally revisited Jake’s dream w/crayak I knew it was gonna be good (but I didn’t expect it to be a chess game war epic..!)
basically I loved it. SUCH a good Jake book - I really appreciate his character now as opposed to when I was 10 and often overlooked him (sorry jake).
similarly, when I was a kid and read these I sympathized a lot w/the chee and felt bad for them towards the end of the series when they had to get more involved in the war (genuinely don’t remember what they even do but ik I felt bad)
but now I've basically 180′d and I'm like damn those chee sure are hypocrites huh.
like they could solve So many of the animorphs problems but their stringent adherence to nonviolence leads to them actively getting in the animorphs way sometimes? and obviously pacifism is a complicated topic, but in this case it also intersect w/the whole ‘child soldier’ thing, and as beings who are insanely old and wise, the chee probably shouldn't just leave all the dirty work to a bunch of literal middle schoolers
aaaaanyways. there’s so much I love about this book. the iskoort! they were sure something. and the ‘plot twist’ that they are actually 2 beings, the Isk and the Yoort - and the Yoort are essentially Yeerks - that slapped. the symbiosis of it all!
I loved the part where they all realize what this means, that this is why Crayak wants the iskoort destoryed - because someday the yeerks might come across them and realize parasitism is not the only way. I love it!
alas I don’t recall the iskoort returning in the story (but also my memory is terrible so who knows?) but still that would be cool
basically I feel like this is the book where Jake Truly comes into his own as a leader, in every sense. he outmaneuvers Crayak, and even the ellimist, who’s yanking them around in his own way
the scene where jake shoves the howler off the cliff and jumps off and morphs and acquires the howler...that was fantastic and tense.
also the murder is definitely becoming more overt. I mean, it has been for a while, but it isn’t really pointed out as much anymore. oof
more on the chee - as Jake points out in this book, and other characters point out in other books - the chee could have saved the pemalites, but instead just stood by while their creators were slaughtered. on the other hand, jake says, what do the chee do AFTER they’ve killed the howlers - where to point them next? when is the end of their violence?
buuuuut also standing by while atrocities occur is pretty damning, as is frequently mentioned in this series - from the very beginning, when marco initially doesn’t want to get involved in the war at all, and the other animorphs basically tell him that turning his back on the war and acting like he doesn’t even know it’s happening would be immoral and cowardly (which imo this reaction helps to push marco in the direction he ends up going, but I digress) - this topic comes up again in 19 when cassie quits the team and rachel is upset bc she sees it as cassie elevating her own feelings above the greater good (as in, as long as cassie feels good about how she acts, it doesn’t matter how much preventable evil the yeerks are committing while she turns away). etc etc. but that’s essentially what’s happening w/the chee - even tho they help w/intel, the lack of any sort of Action on their part means that they’re essentially allowing awful things to happen when they could prevent them. this is rambly but basically...animorphs deals so much in grey areas, and the chee are noticeably black and white in their actions, despite falling, in a meta sense, in an extremely grey area. its such good, thought provoking writing!
anywayssss I keep talking about the chee lmao what else was there. oh YEAH jake and cassie kissed for the first time awww that was super cute
and ofc immediately marco teases them as asks jake if he’s gonna kiss him next, and all I can say is...marco is a bicon
also I love the background worldbuilding w/the iskoort, how they have all these groups and guilds and stuff - its not dwelled on much, which actually works really well to give the world/species a sense of lived-in realness
okay oh man and the reveal at the end that the howlers were just like...children who thought the whole thing was a game...AUGHH man that’s sooo fucked
like, when jake morphs the howler and has rachel ready to knock him down in grizzly morph if he gets out of control due to the howler’s murderous instincts, and he morphs to find that the howler is...playful, like a dolphin morph. SUCH a good fucked up sense of dawning horror there
and the fact that as far as I can tell the chee KNEW this, but wanted revenge anyways, so they let the animorphs assume that the howlers were Evil On Purpose
also I love smaller moments, like jake seeing that ax is ashamed for briefly running away during one battle w/the howlers, and then entrusts him w/an important task bc he knows that ax will see that as redemption - and when everyone thought jake was dead and were so happy when he wasn't (they all love each other so much im gonna cry about these child soldiers augh)
basically that book was so good
man one thing I absolutely love is that the longer the series goes on the more obvious it is that andalites, despite inventing morphing technology, barely use it themselves
like, most of the andalite characters we see barely morph. its kind of a last resort to them, as they’re already plenty dangerous in their regular forms
meanwhile for the animorphs, that’s all they have to fight with. that’s their only weapons against the yeerks, and its so fun to see them use the power in so many varied ways, and so creatively, while the andalites have barely scratched the surface of their own technology
its also interesting to contrast against the yeerks who start out w/absolutely no technology, and the andalites share some but not all of their technology w/them...its too bad that morphing technology was just starting out cause that would’ve been interesting
like imo a lot of the conflict w/the yeerks could’ve been avoided if they could just nothlit into better forms - of course, there’d still be plenty of yeerks who want to go start wars or w/e, just like pretty much any species in the series, but a lot of yeerks would probably be like ‘yeah I'm good’ and just chill out as nothlits
also people online love to talk about how humans are alienfuckers and would definitely have sex w/sentient aliens and whatnot, and while I'm not saying that's untrue, its just funny bc in animorphs the truest alienfuckers are definitely the andalites
as of the hork-bajir chronicles, we now have a second instance of an andalite morphing another species to be in an inter-species alien romance (and eventually have kids)
speaking of, I don’t think I’ve talked abt the hork bajir chronicles yet??? even tho I read it a while ago lmao
HBC was great...I honestly haven’t really run into an animorphs book I’ve actually disliked at this point, I’m sure it’ll come w/all the ghostwriting and whatnot, but I’ve liked at least some aspects of every book
anyways HBC was great, and it’s funny bc I remember that I read this book as a kid, and yet rereading it now I didn’t remember a single bit of it lmaooo
I really liked the framing device of the free hork bajir telling this story to tobias. I also liked how we know from the beginning that this story wont have a happy ending - we know all the hork bajir end up enslaved by the yeerks, but it’s still somehow hopeful at the end? I think this is largely due to the framing device tbh.
also I love toby, and I love that the First free hork bajir named their kid after tobias ;_;
and oooh mannn I LOVED the different POVs from this book. all the characters were so interesting! aldrea was fascinating - I really like the increasingly negative view of the andalites that the readers are getting, all while maintaining the sense that they aren’t like, actively evil, just that they have their issues - like aldrea’s arrogance, and the general andalite arrogance which lead to the loss of the hork bajir. also, who knew andalites had their own brand of sexism? Ls
I did like getting a female andalite tho, that was cool. and dak was really cool, he was such a good, compassionate character who was able to maintain his morals in an interesting way throughout the story
and VISSER THREE...or should I say esplin 9466, because he’s not visser 3 yet...getting his ‘origin story’ was excellent - I really like how we’re learning about visser 3 backwards - we start off the series w/him as the main villain, and he’s campy and menacing, and then we see him in the andalite chronicles as a power-hungry sub-visser trying to climb the ranks and eventually getting alloran as a host, and then back even further here, w/the start of his focus on the andalites and the beginning of his ambition. its been very cool and interesting to see
plus, the beginning of the yeerks as we know them! seerow! alloran! it’s a party and nobody is having a good time, except for some of the yeerks.
I like how it’s pretty obvious that the andalites are well-meaning with their interactions w/the yeerks, but go about it the wrong way - they give them enough technology that the yeerks realize there’s a whole world out there to experience, and then they blockade the yeerks on their planet and tell them they can’t leave. nnnnot the best approach imo
again, as I said above, I’m interested in how things could’ve gone if the andalites had given the yeerks morphing technology early on - could a lot of the conflict have been avoided, or would it have been worse? the yeerks seem pretty evil in this book, immediately jumping to enslave anyone they can. otoh we hear from esplin that not all yeerks like having host bodies, and find it overwhelming, preferring to swim around in the yeerk pool as a slug - I assume as host bodies became more available this type of thinking was probably stamped out in yeerk society or w/e, but there are a lot of interesting what-ifs in the situation
I loved the scene where esplin first experiences having a host, and immediately knows he can’t go back. there are a bunch of great sensory descriptions, and it’s a nice scene to pinpoint as a foundational moment for the visser three in the current story, who spent a lot of time and energy getting what he sees as the best possible host body, an andalite
I find it interesting how much visser three clearly respects the andalites, even while constantly deriding them. and you can see the origins of that here as he immediately focuses in on the andalites, working to become an expert on them in order to make himself useful enough to move thru the ranks
another thing I like is how esplin seems a lot more crafty and ambitious than the visser three from modern times - I would guess that reaching his goal (andalite host body) and being given all that power was detrimental, playing on his weaknesses instead of his strengths. basically, I don’t think it’s ooc or anything, I can see how HBC-esplin became animorphs-esplin, especially w/TAC in between
as for seerow...poor dude. you really do have to feel for him, because you get the sense he really did just want to be kind to the yeerks, but it was borne from a place of pity, and he (and the other andalites) consistently held too much power over the yeerks for the species relations to ever be truly equal and functional
AUGH I have so many thoughts about alien space politics. omg. I need to talk about the actual story lmao
so yeah I also feel for aldrea, she had a rough time, watching her entire family die and being thrown into a hopeless war
and then the andalite council or w/e not listening to her bc she's a girl AND seerow’s daughter...oof
also, I really really liked the running theme of the andalites - specifically aldrea - looking down on the hork bajir as ‘simple’ and constantly underestimating them, especially dak
and I like how this is portrayed as a bad attitude for aldrea to have, and she still remains and interesting and sympathetic character even while having obvious flaws. it’s about being 3-dimensional baby!
and oh man I love that dak realizes that aldrea looks down on him, and his entire species, but he can see that that’s how the andalites are, and it all connects back to the beginning of the story w/the yeerks, bc the andalites looked down on the yeerks and treated them with pity and kept them pinned under their proverbial thumb ‘for their own good’ and look how that turned out
but dak is wise and kind enough to not hate aldrea for this, even acknowledging when she’s using him, but not pushing her away because he recognizes good in her too - and she ends up changing, partially because of his faith in her
and I feel like it can all be compared to that scenario of like - a hypothetical creature that lives in a 2D world suddenly being thrust into a 3D world, and comprehending what its seeing, and understanding that there’s so much more out there outside of the flat lines of its world - and then its dropped back into 2D-land with the knowledge of all the stuff its missing out on, and no way to get back to it or explain it to anybody else
I loooove that ‘trope’ or w/e you wanna call it, and it’s done beautifully here w/the yeerks - whos the say they wouldn't have been fine in their pool swimming around; as esplin said, a lot of the yeerks were terrified of having a host, it was only from the andalites’ perspective that their lives were sad and pitiful, and the andalites showed them what the world could be like, and then said ‘no, you can’t travel the stars like we do, you have to stay here on your planet and do what we say.’
and then again, w/the hork bajir - dak talks about how, even though he drinks up the knowledge that aldrea gives him, in the end it might have been better to just have lived peacefully, not knowing what was in the sky or the Deep - as aldrea says: “It was too late for Dak: he knew that the stars were not flowers.”
plus the hork bajir having to go from a completely peaceful species who don’t even understand the concept of violence, to a bunch of soldiers fighting a war...oof
basically everyone in this story uses the hork bajir. the yeerks use them as hosts, the andalites use their planet as a convenient place to dump seerow and then take their sweet time coming to help, and the arn created them as means to stabilize the planet, but block them off from their society and refuse to help when the yeerks come
like, the arn modifying themselves to be un-infestable by the yeerks and then being enslaved for physical labor instead? oof guys. if they had teamed up w/the hork bajir resistance things might have gone better, but probably not
more on aldrea - throughout the story I was always thinking ‘how am I supposed to see her? as a good person, or as a bad person?’
as a POV character, especially a ‘good guy’ andalite, you just start off automatically thinking of her as a good person, but as the story goes on, she starts getting lost in revenge and begins using dak and the hork bajir, and you’re left wondering if this is a story about her slide into darkness, and then towards the end of the story her character development culminates in her making the decision to stay w/the hork bajir, and the be with dak, and that’s about when I went ‘ohhh right this is animorphs so every character is pretty much gonna be grey’
I feel like that moral grey-ness was on full display w/aldrea, and I really enjoyed that. I love so much when characters who are good do bad things, for good or bad reasons, especially in media like animorphs that’s aimed at kids. it’s so compelling.
oof, and the ending when aldrea convinces dak to mobilize the hork bajir and teach them violence...and dak asks her if she’s ever killed another andalite, and she’s horrified, and says of course she hasn’t, and he says that that’s what she’s asking him, and all the hork bajir, to do - to kill their own people, even if they are being controlled by the yeerks. biiiig oof. I love that dak can keep up w/aldrea and her andalite supremacy attitude - it seems that the non-andalite characters who get along best w/the andalites are the ones who wont take their bs
what else happened....oh my god how could I forget about alloran, and his quantum virus. oooof. I like how we find out about alloran in parallel to visser three, in the same backwards way - in animorphs he’s the tragic host of visser three, in TAC he’s the disgraced but still semi-respected war-prince who becomes the first ever andalite controller, and here he’s the guy who decides to commit some war crimes because, hey, we haven’t tried that yet
but yeah that was fucked up, I love it. I’ve said it before I think but I like that alloran isn’t some perfect martyr tragically taken by the yeerks - it’s a lot more compelling that he’s a very flawed person who was taken as a controller partially due to his own bloodthirstiness.
but yeah, the part where aldrea morphs alloran and ‘sneaks’ into that room was great. aldrea’s dedication to disposing of the virus is a great indicator of her character development - it really feels like the straw that broke the camels back w/re: to the andalites not being what she thought they were, w/their tardiness coming to help the hork bajir planet and the way her father was treated being the precursors to this realization. it all culminates nicely in aldrea saying ‘fuck this actually’ and nothlit-ing into a hork bajir.
and it’s really tragic but realistic that even though aldrea and dak end up seeing eye to eye at the end and getting together, the virus ends up being released anyways (and fails in its objective to stop the yeerks from using the hork bajir - the whole thing was p much a lose-lose situation oof), and aldrea and dak still die fighting a hopeless war
but then we have the free hork bajir on earth, including toby, who, like tobias, has andalite ancestry, but no DNA to show for it - I like that they have that connection as well as tobias being her namesake
so yeah I enjoyed that one and its many-layered themes
WOW this got long uuuuuhhh ok I think i’ll leave this one off here. at the time I’m actually finishing the writing and editing, I’m on book 35 lol so I have some backlogging to do. never fear, I have a lot to say....

Lost in the Lights Ch.5 |Brittana
A/N - Hey friends! Homecoming is finally upon us - brace yourselves, it's the longest chapter yet. Big thank you to everyone that's sending in those lovely messages, it's very much appreciated! So much so that I've already got a jump on writing chapter 6. Thank you all for reading and I hope this chapter jingles your bells.
To my fellow Steeler Nation, 11-0 baby!!! (Even if that last game was so horrible🤦🏽‍♀️ )
Available on ff.net (x) ao3 (x)
Homecoming is finally here and Santana is a bag of nerves.
She’s trying her hardest to keep her cool and do the things she normally would in preparation for the night, but nothing’s able to distract her. It’s actually embarrassing how nervous she feels and she’s so relived that Quinn isn’t around to point it out, Lord knows that girl would get such a kick out of it.
Santana’s nearly done applying the finishing touches to her make up when Maribel knocks at her bedroom door. She lowers her mascara wand and calls out for her to come in while she turns down the music.
“Oh mija,” Maribel coos as she takes in the sight of her daughter all glammed up in her usual choice of color. She brings her hand to cover her heart as a smile stretches across her face, “You look beautiful.”
“Thanks mami,” Santana mumbles a bit bashfully.
Maribel reaches out to fix a whisp of Santana’s waves that’s gone out of place, “You know I use to curl my hair just like that when I was your age.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before I did all this?” Santana jokes, “I would’ve opted to go straight.”
Maribel gives her a knowing look and Santana can’t decide if she wants to laugh or hide her face in her hands. She’s already a nervous wreck, but thankfully her mom doesn’t linger too long on her phrasing.
“Hey, your mother was hot back in the day,” Maribel warns playfully, “Who do you think you get your good looks from? Papi?”
“True,” Santana giggles.
“How come you and Quinn didn’t get ready here?” Maribel mentions, “You always do.”
Santana shrugs, “We decided to change things up this time. Her mom was getting jealous you always got to see Quinn first.”
“I see,” Maribel nods, “Well, who did you decide on taking? You never told me.”
Santana bites her lip as she turns away to find her purse She was hoping to avoid the questions until after the dance, but she should’ve known better. Still, she tries to be vague about it all.
“I’m going with someone on the football team like always,” Santana says dismissively hoping that’ll be the end of that.
“It’s not that Puckerman boy, is it?” Maribel warns as Santana comes to sit at the edge of her bed to put on her heels, “Your father hates him.”
“No, it’s not him,” Santana answers easily, too easily that she doesn’t catch the slip-up before it happens, “She’s new to the school.”
Santana freezes as panic starts to settle into her bones. She’s not sure what to expect from Maribel so she just stares wide-eyed at fumbling with the straps. The seconds that tick by feel like hours but then Maribel finally says something.
“Brittany,” Maribel says softly, “That’s her name, right? You said she was new to school the other week.”
Santana takes a peek over at Maribel to find that she doesn’t look angry. She’s just looking at Santana in that soft way moms do when they see their kid struggling with something.
It makes Santana want to cry for some reason; out of relief or out of guilt? She’s not sure.
“Yeah, I – I’m just…” Santana starts stammering for an excuse, “She was going to go alone a – and she…we thought that it would be okay because I’m a– “
“Santana,” Maribel coos as comes to sit next to Santana. She wraps an arm around her daughter’s shoulders, “You don’t have to explain.”
Santana just nods; the lump in her throat too big to get any words around. Her sexuality is still that thing no one talks about – mostly because of her father – but she’s always terrified of alluding to it too. Maribel makes her feel like it’s a little okay though as she just rubs at Santana’s shoulder until she feels the tension slowly start to ease.
“Wait,” Maribel turns to look at her, “You said she’s on the team?”
“Yeah.”
Maribel gives her a sideways smirk, “Now that you have to explain.”
Santana feels herself smiling too, “She’s the new quarterback. She’s actually really good too.”
“Is she now?” Maribel’s brows shoot up as her smile widens, “That’s amazing! Will she come to pick you up?”
Santana’s smile falters, “No. I – I didn’t know if Papi was going to be here.”
Maribel matches Santana’s frown but nods, “I understand.”
Santana gives her an apologetic smile but Maribel just leans over and kisses her temple.
“Well, I’d like to meet her one of these days,” Maribel says kindly, “If she’s dating my daughter the same rules still apply. Girl or boy, they have to come introduce themselves.”
Santana’s eyes bug out, “Oh, no. We’re not – that’s not a thing. We’re just…we’re friends.”
Suddenly Santana’s phone begins to ring loudly, making the pair of them jump at its interruption. Santana scrambles to catch the call, relieved to see the name on the screen.
“Oh thank God. Sorry Mami, Quinn’s calling,” Santana says, “Could be a fashion emergency.”
Maribel only nods as she gets up to leave the room. Once the door closes behind her, Santana answers the call but she doesn’t get a chance to say anything before Quinn’s hitting her with 21 questions.
“Have you asked yet?” Quinn says in greeting.
Santana rolls her eyes, “Asked who what?”
“You know who and what.”
“Ugh. No,” Santana says firmly, “No, I haven’t.”
“What’s the hold up? Are you really waiting until the very last minute?” Quinn groans. Santana can practically hear the girl pacing now, “It’s almost 7, Santana.”
“I don’t know if I will ask, okay?” Santana tells her firmly, “I haven’t decided yet. This is all very, very new to me and I’m scared as shit so just chill the hell out, Fabray.”
There’s a sigh at the other end of the line but it isn’t out of angry frustration. It’s sympathetic and full of understanding.
“Okay. Well, we’ll be there if you change your mind. I think you should come, maybe it won’t be so scary if you’re with your friends, you know?”
Santana nods even though Quinn can’t see her, “Yeah. Maybe. I’ll let you know.”
“Okay. I’ll text you the place,” Quinn tells her before they’re saying goodbye.
Santana tries to settle her nerves again and looks to the long mirror set up at the corner of her room. She knows Quinn means well – she always does – but right now Santana just needs to focus on getting her head right. She tries remember all the little mantras she use to tell herself to get pumped up.
It worries her when they don’t really have the usual desired effect.
But then she thinks about Brittany and how that’s who she’ll be spending most of her time with tonight and that seems to do a better job of easing her nerves before she has to leave.
\\
When Santana arrives at Brittany’s house, she realizes she actually hasn’t done this before – the whole picking up a date thing. Usually the guys pick her up at hers and Hector grills them while Santana finishes getting ready upstairs. It’s all very traditional – no surprise there.
But this? This is new territory and like she told Quinn – it’s kind of scary.
She sucks in a deep breath though and goes to ring the doorbell. She can hear Brittany’s little brother yell out something before Whitney’s opening the door.
“Oh Santana!” Whitney sighs dramatically, “Look at you, you’re gorgeous! Come in, come in.”
Again, Santana blushes at the motherly tone. Whitney has this way of making her feel kind of shy and at-home all at once and it’s kind of nice.
“Thanks Mrs. Pierce,” Santana answers bashfully as she wanders in to awkwardly stand in the foyer.
Pete is just sitting on the end of the stairs staring up at her in awe. It makes Santana giggle.
“Hey Pete,” She waves.
Pete’s cheeks bunch in a familiar way as he straightens to sit taller, “Hi.”
Santana takes note of the blue and yellow jersey he’s wearing with the number 12 on his chest and smiles, “Nice jersey.”
He looks down at it and his smile grows even bigger, “Thanks! It’s my sister’s from a long time ago. She let me have it. Wanna see the back?”
Santana smirks at his enthusiasm, “Sure!”
He jumps up and does a quick spin, “See? It has Pierce on it and look at the sleeve! It’s a dolphin. That’s Danny the Dolphin, he went to our old school.”
“That’s very cool,” Santana compliments, “I love those colors.”
“You do?” Pete’s jaw drops, “Blue is my favorite color. It’s Brittany’s too!”
“No way,” Santana looks just as surprised.
Pete jumps up to sit on the edge of the coach right next to where Santana stands, “What your favorite color?”
Santana taps at her chin, “I think it might be red.”
“I thought so,” Pete replies, “You wore red the last time you were here and now you’re wearing red again.”
Santana just chuckles at this kid’s amazing memory.
“Britt, come on now!” Whitney calls up the stairs, “Santana’s here.”
“Sorry! I’m coming,” Santana hears Brittany reply followed by quick steps that turn into heavy thuds as the blonde hurries down the stairs.
Santana steps forward, “Oh, there’s no rush – “ but the rest of her words stop in their tracks as she catches sight of Brittany for the first time. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting Brittany to wear – her outfits at school were always pretty eccentric yet tasteful – but this tops all of them.
“Oh,” Is all that Santana manages to get out.
Brittany’s baby blue tulle skirt adds the usual playfulness to her outfit while the fitted white blazer and dress shirt class it up. Santana finds herself smiling at the black bowtie around her neck; only Brittany could pull off such a combo.
Santana’s too busy staring that she doesn’t notice Brittany doing the same exact thing.
Whitney’s laugh breaks up the silence, “Both of you girls are stunning!”
“Yeah,” Pete nods and looks to Santana, “You’re really pretty.”
“Agreed,” Brittany adds as she finally comes down the last couple of steps and closes the distance to Santana, “Sorry I made you wait. I couldn’t figure out how to tie this thing. It took me like three tries. Does it look weird?”
She waves at her bowtie and Santana chuckles.
“It looks great,” Santana goes to give it a straighten before she realizes what she’s done and quickly pulls away, “Uh don’t worry about the wait, there’s no rush.”
“Okay cool,” Brittany smiles then looks around shyly, “So, do you wanna…”
“Oh! Yeah,” Santana straightens, “We can go.”
“Hold on,” Whitney stops them both as she fetches a couple of small boxes, “I’ve got a little something for you both.”
“Mom,” Brittany sighs out of embarrassment, “I told you not to get those.”
“Hush Britt, they’re just daisies,” Whitney jokes, “You can’t go to a dance without accessories.”
Brittany begins to blush as she looks to Santana and whispers, “We can take them off in the car if you want.”
Santana gets the reluctance. Corsages are something dates get for each other, it’s not really a thing friends do. Or maybe it is and Santana just hasn’t ever experience it? But seeing Brittany clam up about it has Santana smiling – at least she isn’t the only one nervous about this whole arrangement.
Santana gives her a look, “Don’t be mean. She’s got a point and I do love to accessorize.”
Brittany rolls her eyes, but relents as Whitney passes her a couple of corsage boxes.
“Hey Pete, will you help a girl out?” Santana asks sweetly as she takes one of the boxes and crouches down to Pete’s level. He’s eager to come over and carefully slides the corsage on Santana’s wrist with her guidance.
“Like that?” He asks.
She admires his work and gives him a high five, “Nice job.”
Whitney smiles at the two and glances to Brittany who’s still looking reluctantly at her own corsage. Before Whitney can offer to help though, Santana beats her to it.
“Come on. Give it here,” Santana instructs playfully, “I’ll do yours.”
Santana isn’t sure where all this confidence is coming from, but she isn’t going to complain about it now – especially when she doesn’t know how long it’ll last. It’s kind of nice having the upper hand for once. It’s rare that she sees Brittany waver, but this sort of embarrassment brought on by her mom is relatable and…kind of cute.
So Santana makes quick work of getting Brittany’s corsage onto her wrist. She’s aware of how her fingertips brush against the soft inside of Brittany’s wrist – it’s probably the first time they’ve really touched. She’s surprised neither of them flinches from it.
“Thanks,” Brittany mumbles once her corsage is secure.
“Sure,” Santana nods and takes a step back to put some distance between them, “So ready to go now?”
“Yup!”
“Wait!” Whitney stops them again.
Brittany instantly pouts, “Mom, please.”
“What? Let’s get some pictures,” Whitney says, “Let me see your phone, Britt.”
That’s when Santana’s confidence streak runs out.
Pictures get posted on the internet and once something is on the internet it’s there forever and does she want this on the internet forever? She’s overacting; she can feel it but there’s that nagging fear at the back of her mind that forces its way to the forefront. She’s been burned before and she’s still recovering from that.
“Wait,” Santana pauses just as Brittany’s handing over her phone. She’s trying to figure out a realistic excuse without making Brittany feel like she’s ashamed to be pictured with her or something like that, but she falls short.
It’s just…too intimate for her liking.
“Oh honey,” Whitney says softly, “We don’t have to if you aren’t comfortable. You both just look so beautiful.”
It’s those simple words that banish Santana’s fear for a moment. It’s the kindness and the consideration that Santana’s not use to and it has her relaxing just a little.
“Yeah,” Brittany agrees with a gentle smile, “We don’t have to if you don’t want to.“
Santana shakes her head and tries to box up the rest of that terrifying feeling.
At some point she has to stop letting it win. At some point she has to take back the power. Maybe her confidence streak was spurred on by the being there at the Pierce’s and the safe space that they unknowingly created? Maybe she can practice taking back her power here?
“No,” Santana says, “We can. I just…can you hold off on posting them anywhere?”
“Oh yeah,” Brittany nods, “Of course.”
“Thanks,” Santana says softly.
“Alright you two,” Whitney shoos them together, “Say cheese!”
\\
Pictures don’t take up too much time; in fact, Whitney only snapped a few before Brittany was reaching for the phone.
“She gets camera-happy,” Brittany had told Santana, “I’m saving us both from the blurry pictures and unflattering angles.”
Now they’re in Santana’s car pulling out of Brittany’s driveway. Santana had given Brittany free reign on music choice, so Brittany’s busy scrolling through songs on Santana’s in-dash unit. Now that it’s just them, Santana starts to feel a little nervous again.
Really, she’s caught in between feeling giddy for going with Brittany to Homecoming and feeling guilty that she’s hiding her true self when Brittany’s been so confident and accepting. Santana finds herself wishing she could be like her.
Maybe one day?
“Oh, I love this song!” Brittany cheers as she starts to play something upbeat.
Santana smiles her way even though Brittany doesn’t see it. She remembers what Quinn said about Brittany being a good person to have around – how she’d be a good influence on her – and that has Santana testing the boundaries of her comfort zone again.
“So,” Santana says with a glance in Brittany’s direction.
“So…” Brittany prompts with a chuckle.
“Have you eaten already?”
“Like dinner?”
“Yeah.”
Brittany ponders, “No, I guess not.”
“Well…did you want to?”
She can feel Brittany’s eyes on her, but she focuses on the road instead.
“Quinn and Mike invited us to meet with them if we wanted,” Santana explains shyly, “I forgot to bring it up before. It was a last minute thing. I just wasn’t sure if it was something you might want to do.”
“No, I’m totally down!” Brittany beams, “I mean, if you want to.”
“Uhh, yeah. I think it could be cool,” Santana admits for the first time since Quinn mentioned it last night.
“Awesome,” Brittany grins her way, “Where are we meeting them?”
\\
“Breadstix? Really?” Santana deadpans instead of a greeting when she approaches Quinn.
Brittany rushes over to compliment Mike’s snazzy suit. He and Quinn had been waiting outside of the restaurant for Santana and Brittany to arrive.
“Uhm, you love this place,” Quinn replies but barely hides her smirk.
“Exactly,” Santana says, “You knew I wouldn’t be able to resist coming here. This is a trap.”
Quinn just rolls her eyes, “You ever think that this is the only damn restaurant in Lima that isn’t infested with rats?”
“Oh gross,” Santana crinkles her nose, “I don’t want to think about that before I have my ‘Stix.”
“Okay then, stop complaining,” Quinn jokes before lowering her voice, “Glad you changed your mind.”
“Don’t make it a big deal,” Santana warns quietly, “I’m barely holding it together.”
Quinn just pats her shoulder, “It’ll be fine, Santana.”
“Let’s hope so,” She says as they start to walk over to Mike and Brittany.
“You two look cute by the way,” Quinn whispers quickly.
Santana can’t even say anything witty in reply. She kind of agrees with her best friend for once.
\\
Despite Breadstix being a popular meeting place before and after any McKinley event, the four of them are able to snag a well-hidden booth towards the back and avoid getting spotted by anyone they know. It’s strange how easy it all felt once Santana wasn’t so focused on the fear of someone seeing them together.
She slipped into the booth next to Quinn while Mike and Brittany slid into the one on the opposite side respectively. Santana thought it was a good move sitting next to Quinn instead, but she clearly didn’t think it through because now she’s directly in front of Brittany and it’s kind of hard not to stare when she’s right there.
She still can’t get over how pretty Brittany looks with her hair done up and just that tiny bit more make up on. She doesn’t think Brittany’s the type that really needs to apply much, but man…when she does, she’s stunning.
Santana also finds pretty quickly that Quinn was kind of right about it not being so scary if she’s out with her friends. It’s a weird thought, but she kind of feels safe with them like this. She can actually imagine the four of them doing this again and that thought makes her smile.
Once they order their food, they fall easily into conversation and Santana begins to give in to having a good time. In fact, it might’ve been one of the best times she’s had in awhile.
Usually Santana’s date would bring her here and they’d end up cutting dinner short so that they could make out in his car before the dance. She always hated that part; making out with guys kind of felt like a chore to her so it lost its effect a long time ago, but the messing up of her hair and make up was the annoying part. She learned pretty quickly that if she pinned their hands or told them not to touch it only made them want her more.
Now that was something she could get behind.
It gave her the upper hand and that’s kind of how she established a little reputation for being the dominant one and guys loved that about her. It was like who was man enough to tame Santana Lopez? No one was ever successful obviously because no man ever could.
She lost that power when she was outed though, but things are a lot different for her now in more ways than one.
Even if she is only going with Brittany to Homecoming as a friend, there’s no pressure of having to put out or sacrifice her dinner because she has to go make out with her date. Not that her past dates ever made her do anything, she just did what she needed to in order to solidify her status.
But with Brittany, she doesn’t have to worry about any of that and it’s a fucking relief for a change. Maybe she can actually enjoy the dance for once instead of looking at it like it’s a game that needs to be won? Then again, there’s still the matter of who will win Homecoming King and Queen and that puts things back into perspective for Santana.
She has to win – she has to – especially when there’s so much riding on this for her. It’s not just a crown: it’s her reputation, it’s her image, it’s her popularity. It’s a big fuck you to everyone that has talked shit about her behind her back.
“Santana,” Quinn calls out loudly with the snap of her fingers.
Santana blinks and notices three pairs of eyes staring at her. They all have the same look on their faces – concern, worry, confusion.
“Sorry,” Santana brushes off, “I zoned out.”
“Seriously, you looked like you were in another dimension,” Mike jokes.
Santana forces out a chuckle; she kind of was.
“Mike was just talking about his meeting with Ms. Pillsbury about college application deadlines,” Quinn supplies but there’s still a touch of worry in her brow, “Didn’t you have your meeting already too?”
Santana nods as she nibbles on a breadstick, “Yeah. She got me pretty early on. I swore she’s meant to go in alphabetical order or something? I bet my dad had something to do with it.”
“Right? My dad’s been on my case since Freshman year,” Mike chuckles and then looks to Brittany, “Have you had your meeting?”
Santana looks to Brittany too, suddenly curious about what Brittany’s plans are after graduation. Most of the students here – at least the ones that care about their futures – can’t wait to get out of Lima. She wonders if Brittany thinks the same since she’s new to the area, but she can’t imagine anyone actually wanting to stay here longer than they need to. Brittany doesn’t have to grow up here to feel the same.
“I have, yeah. It’s kind of cool how she’s checking in on everyone,” Brittany says, “With the move and being new, I thought I’d slip through the cracks or something so I did most of my college prep beforehand.”
“Where do you plan on going?” Quinn asks before Santana could.
“I’ve got a few places in mind,” Brittany shrugs as she starts to play with the straw in her drink, “I use to want to go to Florida State because some of my favorite athletes went there but I don’t think I could move that far away from my family now that we live here. I’m hoping to get an offer from Ohio State. If not, Louisville is as far as I’ll go.”
“Makes sense,” Quinn nods, “I’m looking at Yale. The farther from here, the better.”
“That’s a great school,” Brittany notes, “Why so far from home?”
“Most people here can’t wait to get away from their family,” Santana explains. She can see Quinn nod in agreement, but Brittany just shakes her head.
“Not me,” Brittany replies, “I couldn’t imagine being that far from mine.”
“That’s because you’ve got a cool mom and even cooler little bro,” Mike compliments which instantly lightens the mood.
Santana’s experienced how supportive and kind Brittany’s family is and it makes her wonder how different she would’ve turned out if her family acted similarly. She probably would’ve had a way easier time coming to terms with who she is, that’s for sure!
“Here we are kids! Have at it,” The waitress says as she brings over everyone’s meals. Once the plates are down, the previous conversation is long forgotten and they all focus back on getting excited for the dance.
\\
Once they arrive at McKinley, that feeling of safety and security quickly leaves Santana. Now she’s back to being out in the open – exposed – and it makes her feel just a little more unsettled.
Mike happens to park close by so the four of them regroup and make their way to the entrance together. There’s strength in numbers and Santana tries to remember that as she walks alongside Brittany to the end of the line that’s heading inside. Santana makes sure there’s enough distance between them so their hands don’t accidentally touch or something that would make everything weird but knowing that’s even something she’s being weary of is weird already!
She shakes her head at how she’s already overthinking things when Brittany bumps her with an elbow. The blonde doesn’t say anything, just tilts her head at how Mike’s hand rests at the small of Quinn’s back.
Santana sees and they start to smirk. It’s enough to distract her from the meddling thoughts as they continue to wait in line.
“Oh! There’s Kurt and Mercedes,” Brittany says when she spots her friends walking up from the carpark. She then looks to Santana, “Do you mind if I go say hi really quick?”
Santana quirks her brow, surprised by the fact that Brittany’s even asking. Usually if her date saw someone, they’d just up and go to them.
“Uh yeah,” Santana nods, “Go ahead.”
“Sweet!” Brittany beams, “I’ll be right back.”
Quinn glances over her shoulder to smirk at Santana, “She’s so chivalrous, isn’t she?”
Santana narrows her eyes at Quinn before glancing down at Mike’s hand placement. She smirks when she sees Quinn blush and instantly turn out of his hold to face Santana fully. Mike just looks a little confused but turns around too so that they’re all facing each other now.
“Slow moving line, huh?” Mike comments since the two Co-Captains seem to be having a telepathic conversation.
Before either of them can respond, a booming voice calls out from behind them.
“Sup Chang!” Karofsky says and slaps Mike on the back. Azimio lingers beside him and they both look between Santana and Quinn then back at Mike, “No way you scored both of these pretty ladies.”
Santana instantly rolls her eyes and moves closer to Quinn.
“I’m here with Quinn,” Mike tells them simply, “Santana’s here with Brittany.”
Azimio shakes his head first, “Of course she is. A shame really.”
Santana feels her heart start to pound and her fist tightens, “What’s that suppose to mean?”
“Means it’s a damn waste,” Azimio laughs as he waves his hand at her, “Hot piece like you had to go and switch teams.”
“I don’t see you two idiots here with dates,” Quinn challenges. It’s enough to give Santana a boost of courage too.
“Unless you’re here together?” Santana adds.
“Fuck no! Rather come alone,” Karofsky retorts and gives Santana a grimace, “That shit isn’t natural.”
“What the hell did you just say?” Santana snaps. She feels her whole body ignite as her blunt nails dig into the palms of her hands. She can’t decide if she feels like ripping his head off or bursting into tears.
“You heard what I said dyke,” Karofsky bites back and the way the last word falls makes Santana’s skin crawl.
“Hey man!” Mike steps in. He stands a little straighter but he still looks like a twig compared to the hulking guys, “That’s enough. Don’t you two have somewhere else you can stand?”
Azimio waves him off while Karofsky just laughs, “What? You in on it too?”
“Sticking around for a show later?” Azimio adds as he pokes at Mike’s chest.
Mike slaps his hand away, “Back off, dude. It’s not like that.”
Azimio doesn’t take too kindly to being challenged and soon he and Mike start to shove at each other.
“What are you gonna do?” Azimio instigates, “Lady Lips isn’t here to back you up. You’re all by yourself.”
That’s when Mike shoves Azimio hard and it has Karofsky and Azimio fired up. They start to egg Mike on even more while Santana and Quinn try desperately to pull him back before it gets any worse.
“Go ahead, let him go!” Azimio challenges, “Let’s see what the Asian’s got.”
Thankfully Coach Beiste sees the commotion and jogs over. She puts herself between the guys and shouts, “What the hell is going on here?”
Azimio and Karofsky settle instantly, “Nothing Coach, just messing around with Mike here.”
Mike’s fuming still but Quinn’s got her hand in his and she’s rubbing at his arm with her free one. Santana just keeps glancing between the guys and Coach Beiste.
This is exactly why she has been so terrified. The people at this school are so damn ignorant and she’s too sensitive about it all to defend herself. She can’t rope Brittany into this, she can’t subject her to the bullshit she has to deal with.
“Well cut it out or you’re not getting in,” She orders, “Now go! End of the line!”
Azimio and Karofsky just huff before moving on. Coach Beiste glances at Mike but he just gives her a nod before she’s heading back to the entrance.
It’s then that Brittany jogs back over with a cheek-bunching grin on her face, completely oblivious to what just happened. It instantly falls though when she notices Mike still relatively frustrated and Quinn trying to console him – even Santana doesn’t realize she still clenching her firsts until Brittany speaks.
“Hey,” Brittany greets softly and looks to Santana, “What’d I miss?”
Santana looks to Mike and she gives only the subtlest shakes of her head. She doesn’t want to get into this tonight. She doesn’t want her drama messing everything up so it’s best to keep Brittany in the dark.
It’s enough that he understands what she’s trying to say without saying so he only looks away.
“Nothing,” Santana smiles and hopes that Brittany doesn’t try questioning it. She nods ahead of them, “Oh look, the line is finally moving.”
Brittany spins just in time to see everyone begin to move forward and that’s the end of that.
\\
Once they enter the gym, the group moves to find an empty table near the rest of the Cheerios and Titans. The lights are dim and there’s enough going on between everyone arriving and the music that Santana’s able to avoid Brittany’s curious stares.
“There they are!” Sam cheers once the group gets close enough. His date – Sugar – is hanging off his arm while she chats excitedly with one of the girls on the squad. He reaches over to bump fists with Mike and Brittany, “You guys look really great! You all do. Santana and Britt, you guys got the whole fire and ice thing going on. It’s so cool!”
Brittany and Santana glance at each other’s outfits – Brittany in blue and white, Santana in red.
They chuckle at the coincidence.
“Thanks Sam,” Santana answers then glances to Sugar who’s finally turned to acknowledge the newcomers, “Hey Sugar.”
“Hey Lopez. Hey Quinn, Mike,” Sugar waves then looks to Brittany and goes to fist bump her similar to Sam, “Sup Britt.”
Brittany just chuckles, “Hey Sugar.”
“Come sit,” Sugar says to them with the wave of her hand, “We saved you seats near us. Sammy? Can you and Mike grab us some punch?”
Santana rolls her eyes at Sugar’s bossiness. It’s nothing new to her; Sugar’s kind of known for being a brat but she’s mostly harmless. She slips you twenties for a multitude of reasons so no one really complains.
Sam just shrugs, “Sure thing.”
When the guys head off, Sugar leans on the table and lowers her voice, “So I heard that Missy Gunderson is in the lead for Homecoming Queen.”
“What?” Quinn gasps like it’s the most scandalous thing she’s ever heard.
Santana just leans back and shakes her head, “No way. That’s bullshit.”
“Who’s your source?” Quinn questions, “JBI?”
“You know I can’t reveal that,” Sugar replies, “Just know that they’re reputable.”
“So not JBI?” Santana jokes.
Brittany watches the whole thing unfold and does her best to keep up. Santana notices and it has her itching to comment on how hard the blonde is concentrating. It also has her itching to tell her she’s kind of cute for it but she catches herself before that slips out.
“It isn’t JBI,” Sugar tells them, “But they always know the juiciest gossip so I trust it.”
“I don’t know about all that,” Santana says instead, “Remember the last time you heard something? You were completely off.”
“True,” Quinn nods.
“Okay so I have like a 95% accuracy rating,” Sugar brushes off.
“Says who?” Santana laughs.
Sugar looks at her like she’s lost it, “People, duh. Who else?”
“I’m not believing a word you say,” Santana continues to laugh, “I don’t even know how you came up with that number, but if anyone’s going to win it’s either me or Quinn.”
Sugar just looks to Brittany, “Who are you voting for?”
Between Santana and Quinn, they know the answer but it’s a little funny seeing Brittany put on the spot like that.
“Uh well,” Brittany chuckles nervously, “I’ve already sworn my allegiance to Santana so…sorry, Quinn.”
Quinn fakes an eye roll, “I’m honestly heartbroken.”
Sugar just shrugs, “I’m just going to vote for myself like always.”
Santana only shakes her head as Mike and Sam return with their drinks.
“We did not think this through,” Mike jokes with Sam as they hand out cups of punch. They’re both extremely cautious of the red liquid sloshing around but manage not to spill a drop.
“I’ll go up again to grab ours,” Sam offers, “I think I saw some snacks over there too.”
“Thanks guys,” Brittany says before she’s offering to clink her cup with Santana’s.
A small smile tugs at Santana’s lips as she obliges.
“Cheers,” They say in unison before they take a sip.
This is why she decided to come with Brittany; this carefree feeling she emits is something Santana only hopes that she can absorb by just being around her. It seems to be working so far and she instantly feels much lighter than earlier.
\\
“Hey, there’s Kurt!” Brittany cheers a moment later as her kicker takes the stage with some others she recognizes from the Glee Club. Her call out was loud enough for him to hear so he smiles shyly her way.
To Santana’s surprise, no one at the table starts to boo.
That’s usually what the Titans would do when one of their own does something like sing on stage in front of the whole school, but now that Brittany’s Team Captain a lot has changed. Santana eyes the team and none of them say a word – they just watch the performance quietly. She even sees Puck bobbing his head and again she’s surprised that no one’s calling him out for it either.
Maybe Brittany really is changing things around here?
When Kurt finishes his song, Brittany rises and starts to clap. She’s the only one at first, but then Mike and Sam join her along with the rest of the Titans then the entire room is clapping.
Santana just looks to Quinn to see if she’s seeing this too. They’re both pretty shocked.
“Go Kurt!” Brittany hollers then starts to pump her fist in the air.
Kurt just blushes through his thanks and scurries off the stage as Rachel comes out next. The Titans settle back down but Santana’s just staring at Brittany like she can’t believe her eyes.
“What?” Brittany chuckles.
Santana averts her gaze, “I – I’ve never seen the Titans cheer for someone that’s in the Glee Club. That’s like…unheard of. Making fun of them is a core belief.”
“Well not anymore. At least, not for the Titans,” Brittany says simply, “Kurt’s apart of this team and my guys know how I feel about being supportive of him.”
“Wow,” Santana lets out a disbelieving chuckle, “There’s no way that would fly on the Cheerios.”
“Why not?” Brittany asks. Her tone isn’t challenging, she’s just genuinely curious and it makes Santana’s smile falter. “Aren’t you and Quinn Co-Captains? Don’t you have the power to change the culture of your squad if you want?”
Santana and Quinn exchange a look, because it’s not something they’ve ever thought of before. Coach Sylvester makes it hard to do anything different since she’s been coaching the Cheerios from the beginning of time. The culture isn’t something created by the squad or the captains, it was created by her.
“No one on our squad is in the Glee Club,” Quinn comments but it doesn’t exactly answer Brittany’s questions.
“Maybe that’s because they never felt comfortable enough to join?” Brittany suggests, “Maybe that’s something you two can change before you graduate? Something positive to leave behind rather than the same hurtful cycle.”
Santana softens, suddenly feeling a little guilty.
She can admit that she hasn’t always been the nicest and she can try to make an excuse for it but really…there isn’t one. There are certain expectations she has to honor because of her social status, but the same kind of expectations are applied to Brittany too whether she knows it or not.
The only difference is that Brittany doesn’t let those expectations define her. She has no problem breaking tradition if that tradition sucks.
“And that’s why you’re gonna win!” Sam says proudly and goes to high five Brittany.
Brittany just gives him a playful eye roll before meeting him in the middle.
\\
A while later, the Co-Captains and quarterback make their way over to cast their votes. The music is loud and upbeat; Quinn’s leading the way along the backside of the dancefloor with Santana and Brittany following side by side behind her.
Santana doesn’t miss the longing stares Brittany sends towards the crowd. She looks like she’s seconds away from running off to join them and it makes Santana chuckle.
“You know, you can go out there if you want.”
Brittany looks away to find Santana smirking, “Are you going to come with?”
“I don’t dance,” Santana tells her. She hears Quinn huff from in front of her and she can just picture Quinn’s hazel eyes rolling at her answer.
“I don’t believe that for a second,” Brittany jokes with her brow quirked, “I’ve seen the Cheerios’ routines. You dance.”
Santana rolls her eyes at Brittany’s teasing tone, “That’s not dancing.”
“Okay then,” Brittany laughs, “Show me what is.”
Santana’s eyes go wide at the challenge and it feels like her heart skips a beat too. Brittany’s giving her that famous mega-watt smile and Santana’s finding herself wavering the longer she stares. Of course she dances, but it’s different if she agrees to dance with Brittany.
Brittany’s her date and they’d definitely turn a few heads if they were to go out on the dancefloor together. She’s not sure if she wants that kind of attention though.
But…Brittany’s also her friend and friends dance together all the time. It’s like the perfect loophole and that’s kind of their thing now, right? Skirting the lines between what Santana will allow and what she’s too afraid to try.
She feels like she’s at a crossroads and has both the devil and angel on her shoulders whispering away. One’s telling her there’s nothing to worry about while the other says she’s crazy if she thinks anyone’s going to make this easy for her.
Really, she just wants both of them to shut up already.
Meanwhile, Brittany’s still patiently waiting for a response so Santana just goes with her gut instinct – which happens to be a complete flirt apparently.
“I’m not sure you can handle that, Pierce,” Santana says.
Brittany just chuckles again, “Yeah, you’re probably right about that.”
Quinn looks over her shoulder and gives Santana an impressed nod. Santana doesn’t let it get to her head though as they come to the polling booth where Coach Sylvester sits at small table staring everyone down.
“Hey Coach!” Quinn greets.
“Q, Sandbags,” Coach Sylvester gives them a nod before glancing at Brittany, “I don’t have a name for you yet.”
“It’s Brittany,” Brittany supplies.
“Don’t care,” Coach Sylvester shrugs, “You ladies here to vote?”
“Yes Coach,” Santana and Quinn answer almost robotically. Brittany just nods.
“Alright then. Single file, I want eyes on each of you,” Coach instructs, “There isn’t going to be any funny business this year. Not on my watch!”
Quinn, Santana and Brittany do as they’re told and fall in line.
“What does she mean by funny business?” Brittany whispers to Santana while they wait their turn.
“Last year some idiot stuffed the ballot box with write-in votes for Butt-Muncher McGee,” Santana answers, “It was a whole ordeal.”
“Pretty sure that was Puck,” Quinn adds.
Santana nods, “Probably.”
Coach Sylvester then beckons for Quinn to step up so that she can hand her a ballot before directing her into the booth. When the Coach looks back at the remaining girls, her eyes cut to Brittany.
“You,” She points out, “Lady Titan.”
Brittany stands taller, “Yes Coach?”
The Coach’s eyes narrow like she’s trying to analyze the quarterback.
“I saw that no-handed cartwheel you landed at the Pep Rally yesterday,” Coach informs her, “Your execution needs some work.”
Santana glances up at Brittany but she continues to stand as stoic as ever.
“Thank you for the feedback,” Brittany says politely just as Quinn exits the booth.
“If you were on the Cheerios I could turn you into a champion,” Coach replies then looks to Santana, “Come and grab your ballot, Lopez.”
Santana nods and does as she’s told again but she much rather stand and watch whatever’s going down between the Coach and Brittany.
Once inside, she sets her ballot down on the counter and reaches for the pen. It’s weird; she has never really given too much thought when it comes to voting. She just checks off her name and whatever Titan is up for King without a second thought purely because she never cared about who became King just as long as she was Queen.
This time though, the only Titan there is Brittany.
Seeing the blonde’s name diagonally from her own makes her feel…fluttery inside for all sorts of reasons – reasons that she doesn’t want to unpack at the moment. Most of the time these things are just popularity contests, but for once Santana sees someone on the ballot that actually deserves to win.
And God, she’s really hoping that this isn’t some elaborate prank.
She wants to believe Quinn and Sam so bad, but a part of her can’t shake the fact that the students of McKinley have a history of being assholes. If it ended up taking a turn of the worse, Santana doesn’t know what she’d do…maybe trying kicking everyone’s ass?
She’s not sure how far she’d get though.
“What do you say, Blondie?” Santana hears the Coach ask, “Being a Cheerio is quite the privilege…”
Santana’s brows rise at the offer.
It’s rare that Coach approaches anyone so Santana quickly checks off her boxes: a vote for herself and a vote for Brittany. When she slips the ballot into the box and exits, she finds Brittany smiling politely at Coach Sylvester once again.
“Cheerleading isn’t really my thing,” Brittany tells her as she steps up to take a ballot, “Thanks for the offer though.”
Coach Sylvester grimaces and gives a nod to the booth, “Go.”
“She’s so pissed,” Quinn whispers through her smirk as Santana joins her.
“No one turns her down,” Santana replies, “She doesn’t usually offer spots either.”
“Yeah,” Quinn nods then there’s a pause before her tone turns playful, “So can we talk about how you two were shamelessly flirting earlier? You can’t even deny it because I saw that face you pulled. Are you really not going to dance with her?”
“Oh my God. I’m not doing this,” Santana groans although her cheeks instantly flush. She avoids Quinn’s stares by walking away.
“Santana. Santana!” Quinn calls after her, “Stop walking away from me, we have to wait for Brittany. Santana!”
\\
Santana ends up finding an even better loophole and wanders out onto the dancefloor with Quinn, Sugar and Brittany where they dance together in an awkward little circle. She’s probably the only one that thinks it’s awkward though, everyone else is having a blast. Quinn’s doing her usual sway from side to side, Sugar looks like she’s being electrocuted and Brittany’s…just perfect.
Seriously, the way she moves is so fluid and she actually has some rhythm. It’s hard for Santana to keep her gaze moving. If she lingers too long on Brittany, she’s sure those moves would have her hypnotized. All in all though, she really is having fun dancing with everyone. This night might go down as one of the best she’s had all school year.
“Attention students,” Principal Figgins announces as the song fades, “Will the candidates for King and Queen gather on the stage.”
Suddenly Santana’s weirdly nervous again, not only for her but for Brittany too. When she looks to the blonde by her side, Brittany’s just giving her a lopsided grin.
“Good luck,” She whispers with a soft touch to Santana’s shoulder before she’s making her way to the stage.
Santana gives her a single nod before she glances to Quinn who’s gesturing for her to follow in the opposite direction.
It feels like they’ve done this a million times before but the nerves have never been like this. Usually she stands proud with her chin held up high as she awaits the winners to be announce. Usually she isn’t afraid because when you’re popular there isn’t much to be afraid of; you’re at the top of the food chain, none of them can touch you.
But again, this year is different.
They’ve seen her crack before. They know she has a weakness, everyone knows it aside from Brittany. Still, she does her best to muster all the courage she has and finds her place beside Quinn and Missy.
“I love your dress Santana,” Missy compliments but Santana can tell by her tone that she’s being fake like always. It makes her eyes roll.
“Wish I could say the same for you,” Santana quips, “I see we’re recycling last year’s dress.”
Missy’s jaw drops and the fake niceness is gone, “Are you kidding me? I had this flown in from New York. It’s custom made.”
“You should ask for a refund,” Santana smirks; even that little bit of banter has her feeling somewhat normal.
“The votes are in,” Principal Figgins says flatly, “This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for where we announce our Homecoming King and also Queen.”
Santana feels her hands go cold and clammy despite the hot spotlights they stand beneath. She swears Figgins is talking even slower than usual and it can’t just be for the dramatic effect.
She chances a glance towards the other end of the stage where Brittany stands between Rick and Scott. Santana thinks Brittany might look a little anxious too, because her usual mega-watt smile isn’t as big and bright.
“Roll the drum, please,” Principal Figgins instructs as he opens the first envelope, “This year’s Homecoming King is…”
Santana finds herself holding her breath at the long pause. She glances to Brittany again then back at the crowd like she’s trying to guess what Figgins is about to say, but their expressions are unreadable.
“Brittany S. Pierce!”
Everyone applauds; the Titans are the loudest – Santana can hear Mike and Sam over all of them – as Brittany steps up to be coronated. Her cheeks are a little pink but her smile is back to being cheek-bunching and bright.
“PIERCE! PIERCE! PIERCE!” Mike and Sam chant in unison while the other Titans pound their fists against the table in perfect rhythm.
“Quiet down,” Principal Figgins tells them but they keep on going for a few more seconds until Brittany’s waving for them to settle down.
Santana’s surprised; not because Brittany won, but because it doesn’t seem to be a prank.
One look at the crowd has Santana’s mind changing. She watches the edges of the stage for anything out of the ordinary like a group of Puck Heads with extra large slushies or Karofsky and Azimio up to no good, but no one is there.
The only ones that look annoyed are Rick and Scott and the guys from the Hockey team, but they always look like that.
“Congratulations, Miss Pierce,” Principal Figgins says as Brittany does a little curtsey before the crowd.
Santana finds herself smiling proudly as Brittany does her best royal wave before the crown is placed upon her head.
“She really did it,” Quinn whispers to Santana.
Santana’s still too surprised to say anything.
Typically, nominees that attend the dance together usually end up winning together as well so to see Brittany win has Santana feeling giddy. It’s a bittersweet feeling though because this is exactly what she wants, but it would also make her the Queen to Brittany’s King and that both excites and terrifies her.
Then she gets to thinking…maybe the prank isn’t on Brittany?
Maybe the prank is on Santana instead?
“And now,” Principal Figgins continues as Brittany takes a step back, “Your McKinley High Homecoming Queen is…”
Santana’s heart is racing. It would make sense; Brittany’s not phased by being nominated King but the whole school knows what it would do to Santana if they made her Queen.
She’d have a total meltdown!
She’s waiting for a vat of pig’s blood to be thrown on her like in Carrie or the cold whiplash of a slushie facial, but then Figgins is announcing the winner and it’s a weird mix of relief and disappointment when she finds that…it isn’t her.
“Quinn Fabray!”
Santana can hear the surprised gasp from her best friend as the crowd erupts. She feels like all eyes are on her, watching and waiting for a reaction. She gets that same feeling she had just before the Pep Rally like the walls are closing in on her and she can’t breathe.
This is it. This is the end of her reign as one of McKinley’s biggest and baddest.
She feels cold fingers wrap around her forearm and it pulls her from her thoughts.
“Santana,” She hears Quinn mumble.
Santana can feel herself smiling but she knows Quinn can see through it. It isn’t genuine because she can feel the tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
“I’m – “
“Stop,” Santana tells her even if her ears are ringing. She can just hear the apology forming and she doesn’t want to hear it, “I rather it go to one of us then that stuck-up bitch.”
Missy Gunderson scoffs at them.
“Miss Fabray?” Principal Figgins prompts but the two continue to hang on to each other.
Quinn shakes her head, “It should be you. I voted for you.”
Santana feels her throat tighten, “Don’t worry about me. Go get your crown, Q.”
Quinn nods and puts on her pageant smile as she approaches Figgins.
“Congratulations, Miss Fabray,” Principal Figgins says as the crown is placed upon Quinn’s head.
Santana claps the hardest, but it doesn’t cover up the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
“And now, behold the tradition of our Homecoming King and Queen sharing their first dance,” Principal Figgins announces as the Glee Club takes the stage.
The nominees are directed off stage while the students on the dancefloor create a circular opening for Brittany and Quinn. Santana watches longingly as they make their way down the steps.
She joins Mike, Sam and Sugar standing at the front of the opening as the band starts up with the first chords of Miguel’s Pineapple Skies. Artie’s on lead vocals and Santana would be in awe of how good he actually sounds if she were able to focus on anything else but her best friend and her date dancing together.
And maybe Quinn’s right, maybe it should be Santana out there but Santana doesn’t know if she would be brave enough. Quinn obviously has nothing to worry about, no one’s ever questioned her sexuality before.
But if it were Santana there instead? She can just hear the questions now: So Santana really does play for another team?
And if she were to say yes, what would happen? Would she endure the same kind of treatment everyone else who is different endures? Would they make her life a living hell like they did last year?
“It’s so cool Britt won,” Mike says to her while they watch Quinn and Brittany groove to the music, “She’s awesome.”
“Let’s hope that’s the only reason why she won,” Santana mutters without thinking. A part of her is still paranoid that something bigger is going on and she keeps an eye out for anything suspicious.
Mike frowns though, “What do you mean?”
Santana shrugs as she watches Quinn try to twirl Brittany, “You’ve seen how people at this school treat those that are different. Just look at Karofsky and Azimio earlier. How do you know they didn’t do this?”
Mike instantly softens, “Those guys are jerks, Santana, but I promise they have nothing to do with Brittany winning.”
Santana looks up at the sound of him being so certain.
“Everyone on the team agreed that she should win,” Mike explains, “We all voted for her, couldn’t have a Puck Head as King, but it’s more than that. She’s our quarterback.”
Santana’s lips part but she says nothing.
Once again, she let her own insecurities take her on a joyride.
“Plus, you’ve got to admit she’s a pretty cool person,” Mike shrugs as Quinn lets out a laugh at Brittany trying to do the robot, “Maybe she’s starting to change people’s minds about what it means to be different? Maybe they’re starting to see that it’s okay?”
Santana bites her lip. Maybe Boy Chang is on to something?
“Well…they could’ve at least amended her title,” She replies, “Just because she plays football doesn’t mean she wants to be a King. Female quarterbacks can be Queens too.”
“True,” Mike nods, “But she doesn’t look too bothered by it.”
They both continue to watch Brittany and Quinn dance together. At least it’s an upbeat song so they don’t have to do the whole awkward slow dance thing. They both look like they’re having a blast though and Santana finds herself wishing she could be that carefree.
“She really does look beautiful though,” Mike comments dreamily.
“Yeah she does,” Santana whispers with her eyes still on Brittany.
He glances to his side and quickly amends his previous statement, “Quinn, I mean.”
Santana only smiles, “Yeah. She does too.”
She doesn’t realize what she’s said until Mike’s raising a brow at her and there’s a small smirk starting to grow.
Santana narrows her eyes at him, “Don’t say a word.”
All Mike does is gesture that his lips are sealed before turning away.
Santana really isn’t worried about him. Of all the guys at McKinley, Mike’s probably the most decent one there is so she knows she can trust that he’ll keep her slip-up to himself.
Still, she can’t believe the slip-up happened in the first place.
It’s probably the first time she’s ever voiced her attraction for Brittany out loud and now that she’s said it, it’s harder for her to deny. It also makes it harder for her to watch Brittany dance with Quinn.
Santana recognizes that she’s becoming a little jealous and immediately feels guilty about it. It’s not Quinn’s fault that McKinley chose her, that’s not why she feels jealous. It’s because she’s not the one still struggling to accept a huge part of herself and that makes Santana feel even worse.
She’s just so tired of caring too much about what everyone’s thinking about her.
\\\\\
Shortly after the honorary first dance, Brittany is quickly swept up in people wanting to congratulate her. Kurt is one of the first and he practically launches himself into her arms for a big hug.
“You make a magnificent King, Britt,” He compliments before he pulls away to bow.
Brittany giggles at the display then Mercedes and Tina are congratulating her next. Before she knows it, she’s surrounded by Titans and Cheerios and other students she recognizes from class. She’s polite and thanks them all for their votes – even if she’s still trying to wrap her head around the fact that so many of them chose her – but she’s quick to notice a particular someone missing from the crowd.
Brittany’s able to dodge the rest of the students as their attention is drawn to Quinn who has pulled Mike to her side. She bumps into Sam and Sugar as she starts to look around.
“Sorry. Have you seen Santana?” Brittany asks, “I saw her standing with Mike just a minute ago.”
Sugar only shrugs, seemingly unbothered or bored, then goes over to talk to Quinn. Sam scratches his head and looks around too.
“Sorry Britt,” He says, “I didn’t even notice. Maybe she’s gone to the bathroom?”
Brittany nods, but she has a funny feeling that Santana won’t be there.
She saw the look on her face when they were on stage, it was like Santana was about to puke up there. Brittany didn’t get it; wasn’t Santana meant to be a pro at this stuff? Could it be stage fright? No, that’s silly. She’s a Cheerio, she performs for crowds all the time so there’s no way she’s terrified of the spotlight.
It has to be something else and that has her worried.
“I’m going to go check on her,” Brittany tells him.
“Sure thing,” Sam smiles before going to join the rest of his friends surrounding Quinn and Mike.
\\
Brittany actually finds Santana rather quickly. She was on her way to check the bathroom when she noticed someone sitting outside in the courtyard. She recognized Santana’s red dress through the foggy glass of the window and slowly made her way out to join her.
What she doesn’t expect to see is the cigarette in her hand; she didn’t think Santana smoked.
They’re still on school property so to see Santana being so open about it kind of shocks Brittany, but at the same time it doesn’t surprise her at all. With Santana’s bad girl reputation, Brittany wouldn’t expect anything less. Whatever makes you look cool, right?
“There you are,” She says in order to make her presence known. She sees Santana flinch and lower the cigarette from view. It makes Brittany chuckle; as if that would be enough to hide the fact that’s she’s out here smoking.
Santana looks over her shoulder as Brittany comes around to sit on the stone bench across from her.
“Hey Pierce.”
Brittany smirks, “You know I have first name, right?”
“I know.”
“And yet, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say it.”
Santana matches Brittany’s smirk before taking another drag, “Nice crown.”
Brittany touches it like she forgot it was there then shrugs, “It’s alright. I’ve seen better ones at the party store.”
Santana gives her a wry chuckle before exhaling. Brittany’s quick to pick up on the tension but she can’t determine what’s the matter.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah,” Santana answers but her voice cracks. It looks like she didn’t expect it too and quickly averts her gaze and focuses on taking another drag.
Brittany ducks her head and softens her tone, “You sure?”
There’s a deep sigh, “No.”
Santana’s still looking everywhere else but Brittany. The blonde isn’t deterred though; eye contact is spooky especially when you’re feeling vulnerable.
“What’s up?” Brittany asks trying to sound casual.
She doesn’t give an answer for a long time. They just sit in a heavy silence until Santana has to stub out her cigarette. Now that her hands aren’t busy, they wind together in her lap.
“I haven’t been very honest with you,” Santana admits so softly Brittany almost didn’t hear her.
“Okay?”
She has never seen Santana look so small and it has her crossing the short distance between them without even thinking about it just so she can sit closer. She’s not sure what Santana could possibly be lying about, but she’s an understanding person. Whatever’s going on, Brittany just wants to show Santana that she can be a good friend.
Santana takes a shaky breath and twines her fingers so tightly together that her knuckles begin to pale. Brittany so badly wants to reach out and ease them from the harsh grip, but that’s sure to be overstepping some boundary.
“So,” Santana breathes out. Brittany watches her lips part before she laughs dryly at how the words seem to get stuck, “Fuck.”
“It’s okay,” Brittany whispers encouragingly, “Whatever it is, it’s okay.”
It’s then that Santana finally looks up at her and it makes Brittany’s breath hitch. Her brown eyes are tinged red and they flicker between Brittany’s like she’s searching for something there.
Then she’s licking her lips and preparing to speak again.
“So, There’s another shaky breath and an even longer pause then she says, “I’m gay.”
“Oh,” Brittany exhales without thinking. She instantly blushes because that’s not what she wanted to say but she’s so surprised that it was all that came out. Santana’s still looking on edge so Brittany quickly gives her a reassuring smile, “Wow. That’s great, Santana.”
Something shifts for the brunette and it’s like a sigh of relief hits her. The stiffness in her shoulders ease and the anguish on her face starts to fade.
“I can see why people struggle with finding the right thing to say,” Brittany jokes in attempt to lighten the mood. Her cheeks feel hot, “I’m sorry, I’ve never been on the other side of this before. I wish I could’ve thought of something cooler to say.”
That seems to ease Santana yet again, even a small smile starts to form.
“But seriously,” Brittany continues as she ducks down to look Santana in the eye, “That’s really awesome, Santana. Thank you for telling me.”
Santana’s small smile falters as she shies away from Brittany’s gaze, “I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you sooner.”
“Don’t be,” Brittany assures her, “That’s a silly thing to be sorry about. You should tell people whenever you feel comfortable enough. This is about you.”
Santana bites her lip, “I guess I’m not use to that as an option.”
That makes Brittany wonder, but she doesn’t go for a deeper dive.
“Well I appreciate you telling me. It’s a brave thing to do.”
“Brave?” Santana scoffs, “I just wanted to tell you before someone else did.”
So others know? Brittany wonders.
“Well even then,” Brittany replies instead, “I’d still wait for you to tell me yourself. I’d never want to assume, not about something like this. I know how it feels and it kind of sucks.”
Santana looks up at her through her long lashes, “So you are…? Am I allowed to ask?”
Brittany chuckles at how unsure Santana is – it’s a little adorable – but she quiets down and gives her a nod, “I’m bisexual.”
“Okay,” Santana nods too, “I’m…I’m sorry if that was insensitive. I don’t really have much experience when it comes to this as you can probably tell. I’m not friends with anyone else who’s…you know.”
“Gay?” Brittany supplies easily. She softens when she sees how the word makes Santana tense, “You can say it, it’s not a dirty word unless you make it one.”
Santana smiles at that, “I think I’m still trying to get use to saying it out loud. Shit, I’m still trying to get use to saying it in my head.”
“I get it,” Brittany chuckles, “I’m sure the people at this school don’t make it easy for you to be yourself, huh?”
Santana sighs, “Something like that. You’re probably the last to know.”
“Okay,” Brittany goes to bump her shoulder with Santana’s playfully, “You don’t have to rub it in. I know my gaydar isn’t the best.”
Santana chuckles and it makes Brittany feel a little accomplished, but the feeling fades when Santana gets swept up in a deep thought.
“Why do I get the feeling that there’s more to this?” Brittany asks hesitantly.
“Because there is,” Santana answers, “But I don’t want to get into it tonight.”
Brittany respects that, “Is that why you’re out here?”
Santana shrugs, “Kind of.”
“Okay,” Brittany says and goes to straighten up. She opts for a lighter tone, “Well, we don’t have to talk about it then. We can just sit out here if you want? Talk about how cute Mike and Quinn are together?”
Santana glances her way with a quirked brow, “Did you see how they were holding hands earlier?”
“Uh, yeah!” Brittany beams, “The sparks were totally flying before I came looking for you.”
Santana chuckles and after a moment she says, “Sorry about that. Didn’t mean to ditch you.”
“It’s all good,” Brittany shrugs as she looks up at the dark sky. A couple stars twinkle above and it makes her smile, “It’s kind of nice out here.”
Santana nods and they fall into a long, comfortable silence. Brittany’s fine with it, it’s a nice break from the crowd that was forming around her inside. It’s nice to just sit with someone.
“You know,” Santana starts quietly, “I’m out I guess but sometimes it feels like I’m not. It feels like I’m still that scared little girl hiding in the closet.”
Brittany frowns at the brokenness.
“I’m just so over being afraid all the time,” Santana grumbles, “It sucks pretending to be someone I’m not. It sucks feeling like an embarrassment.”
The last word is what confuses Brittany the most, “An embarrassment?”
“Yeah,” Santana shrugs and she looks so helpless again, “I just…I wanted to prove to everyone tonight that I still got it you know? So what if last year was shitty for me? I can still rule this place because nothing has changed. I’m still the same person.”
Brittany’s questions are piling up but the way Santana’s voice cracks again grabs her attention.
“I just can’t believe I lost,” Santana croaks and Brittany swears she can see tears in Santana’s eyes, “After all of that, I couldn’t even win a damn crown.”
Brittany frowns at the sound of Santana’s bitter laugh and she’s trying so hard to bat away the tears before Brittany can see them fall. It’s like she can’t let Brittany see her in such a vulnerable state and it breaks her heart.
Brittany doesn’t think before she reaches up to remove the crown from her head.
“Take mine then,” She offers.
Santana goes to argue but her words fall short when Brittany places the crown on Santana’s head instead. She smiles at how it’s a little crooked and a touch too big.
“Looks good,” Brittany compliments.
“I – I can’t take this,” Santana says as she reaches up to remove it, “This is yours, you earned it.”
Brittany stops her hand from moving any higher, “I don’t mind giving it away, especially when it means so much more to you.”
Santana’s lips part and twitch to form a smile at how Brittany’s hand lingers atop of hers but then her brows furrow as she pulls away, “I wish it didn’t.”
“Yeah,” Brittany nods, “But in this moment while we’re young and dumb and care about silly things, it does and that’s okay. It isn’t just a crown for you. It’s acceptance.”
Santana looks at her like she’s surprised by what she hears; Brittany is too if she’s being honest.
Santana catches another falling tear with the back of her hand and lets out a embarrassed laugh, “God, this is so stupid. Why do I have to care so much about what everyone thinks of me?”
“One day you won’t,” Brittany assures her as she reaches into her blazer. She finds a couple tissues there and offers them to Santana.
“Thanks,” She whispers behind a watery smile.
Brittany just nods, “I think it’s only natural to care, especially here. Everyone cares way too much about what everyone thinks of them. It would drive anyone a little crazy I think.”
Santana dabs beneath her eyes, “It sucks.”
“Yeah,” Brittany chuckles, “It kind of does.”
“Were you always like this?” Santana wonders while she tries to dry her tears, “So sure of who you are?”
“I was being called a tomboy from when I was like 6,” Brittany jokes lightly, “People have been trying to tell me who I am and fit me into a box my whole life. I wasn’t very sure of myself for a long time.”
“Oh,” Santana frowns.
“I’m not an angry person but it always made me a little mad inside and that stuck with me as I grew up,” Brittany tells her, “I only made it even worse when I started playing sports in school. It felt like everyone was labelling me before I could even explore who I was.”
Santana sighs, “I can relate.”
“I guess after awhile I got tired of being so annoyed by it all,” Brittany says, “People are always going to talk, they’ll always have their own ideas about who you are, and you can’t really change that. What you can do is change how you react to it.”
“Makes sense,” Santana replies.
“Maybe I grew a thicker skin or something or I finally became immune to listening to what everyone else had to say about me,” Brittany continues with a shrug, “I stopped focusing on them and started to focus on me. I embraced all my awesome and once people saw that, they embraced it too. I was being the authentic me and I’ve been told by at least one person here that it’s kind of inspiring.”
Santana smirks at the sound of Brittany trying to joke with her again, “Was it Kurt?”
“Yeah,” Brittany giggles.
Santana just shakes her head as she takes a steadying breath.
“I’m sorry about this,” She says with wave at herself, “I didn’t really anticipate having a whole breakdown at Homecoming. It’s probably not what you signed up for.”
“I signed up for a night out with a friend,” Brittany assures her with a smile, “It’s been good to me so far. What about you? You know, aside from the obvious.”
Santana chuckles, “It’s been good to me too.”
“Sweet,” Brittany beams then leans back to look up at the night sky as they settle into another bout of silence.
Brittany’s just replaying their conversation in her head.
She learned a lot about Santana tonight and maybe the most important thing she learned is that Santana is pretty sensitive at heart. It’s so unlike the persona she puts on at school around everyone else but it makes sense, because that’s the role she feels the most comfortable playing.
It’s no wonder she’s struggling to adapt.
When Brittany glances at Santana, she finds the brunette staring up at the sky too. Her crown still sits perfectly tilted on Santana’s head and it makes Brittany feel all fuzzy and warm inside. She hopes that she’s able to offer Santana some type of comfort whether its her words or by giving away her crown, because Santana doesn’t deserve to feel so horrible about herself.
Brittany hopes that maybe in some small way she has shown Santana that the things she feels are normal and she isn’t alone and if she needs someone Brittany can be that person for her too.
But just for good measure, Brittany adds one last thing.
“None of this is really matters – you know – like in the grand scheme of things,” Brittany mentions and it has Santana looking back at her, “Years from now when everyone’s moved on, no one’s going to remember who won what. It’s all a stupid game with stupid prizes and none of it is going to matter once you graduate. At least that’s how I look at it.”
Santana softens, “You’re kind of a genius, Pierce.”
Brittany doesn’t think anyone’s ever called her that before and the smile she wears shows it.
“Do you want to go back in?” Santana asks awhile later, “We’ve been out here long enough. You probably want to get back in there.”
“Only if you want to,” Brittany shrugs but as soon as she says that she remembers the horde of people still wanting to talk to her. Maybe she would rather run far, far away instead?
“I usually don’t stay the entire time,” Santana tells her.
Brittany quirks a brow and jokes, “Too cool?”
“Maybe,” Santana smirks, “You want to get a coffee instead?”
“A coffee?” Brittany laughs, “It’s nearly 9:30.”
“What?” Santana teases, “Getting close to your bedtime?”
“Maybe,” Brittany quips before rising to her feet, “Is the Lima Bean even open at this time?”
Santana shakes her head, “I know place.”
Brittany just shrugs before holding her hand out to Santana, “Let’s go then before one of us turns into a pumpkin.”
“If it’s only 9:30 I think we’ll be safe,” Santana giggles as she lets Brittany pull her to stand, “I’ll just let Quinn know we’re going first.”
“Okay sure,” Brittany starts to walk towards the door when Santana catches her by the wrist.
“Uh…you might want to wear this so no one thinks I stole it from you in a jealous rage,” Santana says jokingly as she pulls off the crown.
“I think I could take you,” Brittany laughs then bends down a little so that Santana can place the crown back on Brittany’s head. She makes a few adjustments so that it sits just right before tucking a stray hair behind Brittany’s ear.
“Perfect,” Santana compliments as she pulls away.
Brittany only blushes as Santana opens the door for them both.
\\\\\
As soon as Santana told Quinn that she and Brittany were leaving early to get a coffee, she swore Quinn was going to pass out from all the excitement. She ignored all of Quinn’s usual comments in favor of teasing her about Mike and how they’ll be spending their night instead.
That shut Quinn up real quick.
\\
Now they’re at Elliott’s Fairgrounds – a café Santana found halfway through her Sophomore year – and they’re chatting away over a couple of hot chocolates. Aside from some old guy that looks to be asleep in one of the arm chairs near the fireplace and the two baristas behind the counter, they’ve got the place to themselves.
“Woah,” Brittany breathed out when they first entered the small townhouse that had been converted into a cozy café, “This is so much better than the Lima Bean.”
Unlike their competitor, Elliott’s Fair Grounds was a lot more down to earth and gave off such a laid back vibe. The owner – Elliott – prides himself on creating a safe space for all kinds of people and that’s really what drew Santana in. Most of the time the place is filled with students from the local community college busy studying, but on a Saturday night it’s usually empty – just how she liked it.
Brittany’s still wearing her crown and Santana can’t get over how the blonde doesn’t give a single fuck about it. Not that any of the staff here would ever tease her, but Brittany just carries on like usual and Santana kind of loves that about her.
“It’s so cool being in a café at night,” Brittany comments as she swipes her finger through the whipped cream atop her mug, “It’s like an alternate universe or something.”
“Yeah. No one here to bother me,” Santana chuckles before admitting, “The Lima Bean can get a little crowded. I use to come here all the time last year.”
“Why’d you stop?” Brittany asks as she cleans off the tip of her finger.
“Uhh…” Santana swallows dryly and glances at the baristas behind the counter just so she doesn’t stare but it only further reminds her of the answer. She’s already spent so much of their night talking about herself so she opts for something simple, “I guess I’ve just been busy.”
Brittany seems satisfied with the answer, “Well maybe this can be our new thing then? We can like…come here once a week or something?”
Santana smiles at the thought of doing something like this together on a weekly basis.
“Yeah,” She nods, “I can be down with that.”
\\
After the drinks and the conversations, Santana gets Brittany home at a respectable time even though Brittany said she didn’t really have a curfew. Santana was instantly jealous – if she isn’t home by 11 on the dot, her parents would kick her ass.
That had Brittany laughing as they pulled up to the Pierce residence.
“Well you’ve got about 15 minutes left,” Brittany jokes, “Think you’ll make it?”
Santana chuckles, “Totally. I don’t live too far from here.”
“Okay good,” Brittany grins, “I don’t want to be the reason you’re getting into trouble.”
“So considerate,” Santana teases and then they fall into a moment.
Santana recognizes it the second it happens.
They’re alone in her car at the end of their time together at Homecoming, Santana knows what usually happens next from her past experiences. This is where the guy would put his heavy hand on her thigh and lean in for a messy goodnight kiss. Some dates were better kissers than others – for example, Puck even if he’s an ass – and Santana would oblige because that’s what she’s supposed to do.
Girls kiss boys, boys kiss girls.
Only, that’s not always the case because here she is and she’s not sure what to do. Brittany’s her friend but the things she feels in the pit of her stomach aren’t feelings she gets around a friend. She tries to imagine that it’s Quinn in the passenger seat and they’d usually hug before she leaves.
Is she allowed to do that with Brittany? Should she ask? Is that lame as hell? Probably.
“Wow, you are really spinning those gears,” Brittany chuckles which has Santana going beet red in an instant.
“I – I was going to tell you something but I couldn’t remember what it was,” Santana lies.
“Right,” Brittany nods, “Well, text me if you do. I’m going to hug you now because it looks like you need it.”
“Oh,” Santana chuckles at how easy Brittany makes it all seem as the blonde leans over the middle console. Her long arms wrap around Santana in a warm hug and it’s hard for the brunette to keep from humming at how nice it feels.
“Thanks for a great night,” Brittany says softly and her breath tickles Santana’s ear, “Thanks for telling me about you too.”
Santana’s heart feels so full it’s about to burst. Brittany’s probably the best date she’s ever had. No one’s ever shown her this kind of kindness and understanding. She actually doesn’t want this to end so soon now.
“Thanks for listening,” Santana ends up saying in reply as Brittany pulls away.
“Well goodnight, Santana,” Brittany says as she goes for the door. She gives her a soft smile, “Get home safe.”
Santana just nods, “Goodnight.”
\\
It’s not until Santana’s at home getting ready for bed that she notices she hasn’t stopped smiling since. Even as she’s brushing her teeth and she has a mouthful of suds, her grin is still ever so prevalent.
It only grows bigger when she sees her phone light up on her night stand. She walks over to check it while her toothbrush is still hanging out of her mouth. There’s a text from Brittany and she’s quick to open it.
From Brittany – Here’s all of those pics we took earlier. You can do whatever you want with them, I don’t mind. I think we look pretty good, don’t you?
Santana stands there for a moment admiring each and every one of the pictures attached to her text and she can’t help but agree. Brittany’s beautiful and that smile…man, Santana hasn’t seen a prettier one in her whole life. She looks pretty good herself too, but for once she’s not looking too much at herself in these pictures.
They kind of make a good-looking pair in these and maybe she even sets her favorite one as Brittany’s profile picture in her phone but she doubts anyone needs to know about that.
It’ll just be her little secret.

Fic, Off of Land, Out of Water, Part 4, Moving
This is uuhhh... part 4. Sorry it took so long. I was in a couple of intensive summer writing classes and they nearly killed me.
Warnings: There’s like five cuss words and some offscreen death. 2,358 words.
Abstract: Why we’re all here. Where we are. No answer yet about what’s coming next.
First Previous Next
4. Moving
“An entire community was uprooted. You can’t expect us to be perfectly fixed after just one generation.” Logan huffed.
He looked at his reflection in the polished glass and angrily scrubbed at the scales on his face with a dead bit of coral.
“Everyone around here expects the city to be the way it was up north. We’re in tropical waters now.”
Gentle hands came from above him and got him to surrender the coral.
“You’re going to make yourself bleed again if you’re not careful, honey.” His Mom said, turning upside down and pressing her forehead to his.
“Mother…” Logan started.
“None of that. I don’t want you to be thinking about politics this early. You’re too young to be thinking about that.”
Logan sighed. “You make a fair point.”
The mermaid smiled. Her short black hair moved around her like seaweed. The scales cutting through it and going to wrap around her left arm were the color of seaweed.
“I always make fair points.”
“Mother, everyone is wrong sometimes. So when is father getting back?”
Her happy expression twitched.
“It’ll take a while. Magic takes up a lot of energy and there’s a lot of oil up there. I think it’s time we go to sleep, guppy.”
Logan sighed. “Mother, I’m 17. I could technically live on my own.”
She pulled him close. “Well let’s hope that you don’t have to.”
They locked the door and held each other close, prepared to sleep.
“Mother?” Logan asked.
“Yes, darling?”
“Should I go help him?”
“Listen to me. Don’t go to the surface. I don’t want to lose you. Now go to sleep.”
“But people younger than me go up all the time. How would you lose me?”
“You’ll know when you’re an adult, Logan. Now go to sleep.”
“Yes, mother.”
……….
Virgil swam downward, pulling the body along with him.
It became darker. The chill became more intense. Creatures swam past him that he didn’t recognize. Most of them weren’t the type of thing he wanted to linger on for too long.
The small sunlight pendant tied around his neck did almost nothing down here. It was getting harder and harder to breathe as the water pressure increased. When he looked behind himself the tip of his tail disappeared into the blackness.
He was grateful for the darkness. Grateful that he couldn’t see her properly in the darkness. Grateful that he couldn’t see the grey mixing in with the brown of her skin, her wine red scales flaking off, her black eyes rolled back in her head and her long grey hair floating around as if dead now. No live thing making it move in circles and s shapes in the water.
Finally it became deep to the point where he knew if he continued that he would soon die. He stopped swimming and tapped the little light tied to his neck. It went out.
Now it was just him, the darkness, whatever creatures were swimming in the pitch black of the ocean, and what was left of the sea witch Val, whose mer name translates to “sunlight near the surface”.
The body smelled. He held it close and felt the ceremonial cords that the people in town had tied around her. It was assumed that everyone grew up being told how to perform a mer funeral but Virgil, of course, grew up on land and had no idea. He had to quietly pull the schoolmaster aside and ask.
Of course he was the closest thing to family she had and of course Logan was afraid of the depths and didn’t want to return after his parents’ funerals. So of course Virgil had to face this alone. The Catholic in him wanted to say a prayer. Something. But that’s not how they did things down here.
Instead he detached a sharp stone from the cord around his neck and held the body away from himself by the ropes tied around it.
“You were loved. To the depths you go. For your sake may you never be found.”
He cut the rope and let go of it. He swam upwards and didn’t look back. He didn’t turn his light on. If he did that might distract her soul from finding where it’s supposed to go, or anger the gods that would guide her. Or so the teacher had told him.
When he saw light he didn’t stop swimming. When he got to the town he didn’t stop. As soon as his body adjusted to a new depth he kept going higher. Somewhere in his frantic swimming he dropped the necklace with the bottle of sunlight and sharp rock. He swam further and further, his heart pounding from with the anxiety or exercise, he didn’t know.
Then he broke the surface and saw that he was alone with nothing on the horizon.
There was nothing and no one left to blame so he spent some time insulting the moon.
……….
Logan sat on the rock, his bare feet hanging in the water. There was something about the place where two elements met. Something good. That’s something Roman or one of the spiritual leaders down there would tell him though, so he’d never admit that out loud. He had a reputation after all.
He waited there, his feet in the water. Roman had offered to wait for Virgil with him. Logan told him no. No, he didn’t want Roman there for this. Virgil had been underwater for two weeks now, leaving him with his brothers. They saw Logan as their brother too now, but they weren’t Virgil. Besides, there was one talk that Virgil hadn’t finished with him. One he’d wanted since the day he’d broken the surface.
One that he now knew had been waiting for him since he was born.
……..
When something impossible happens, the universe will likely want some payment in return. Existence itself is impossible, so as a consequence of it existing it has to be complicated. If existence was possible, it would be a lot more straightforward.
If intelligent beings were meant to exist they would be a lot kinder and a lot more rational. However, they weren’t meant to exist and so they go around starting wars all the time.
By the time the universe got around to mermaids it was tired of symbolism. Being intelligent, the species would be suffering enough already, so why put the entire species through the wringer? That had already been done to humans, satyrs, dolphins, crows, octopi, and elves. Why do it to another species?
The thing was though, the land and the sea were mad. They were mad about everything. First the land takes away some sea life with evolution (which shouldn’t have existed) and then that life got intelligent and started cutting things and inventing magic. Then it had the audacity to return to the ocean again. The whales were bad enough, but humans returning? Unacceptable.
The universe decided that in this case it wouldn’t fuck up all humans and merpeople. Both of them had enough problems already. Instead, it would epically fuck up one human and one merperson about every hundred years or so, forcing both of them to move between land and sea. It would be really inconvenient for them and everyone that knew them. That was enough give and take to keep order, it decided.
Exactly six thousand seven hundred years later, Virgil got that scar on his stomach after a long day involving a broken car and a crying three year old screaming about how he didn’t want a little brother and Logan was too small to force his way out of his egg so the nurse had to cut him out of it. Both were born early. The ocean and land are impatient pieces of shit. The universe tried to cut them some slack but even the universe can’t stop intelligent creatures from being intelligent creatures.
Intelligent creatures are too stupid to see what’s right in front of them.
……….
Virgil pushed his bangs out of his eyes and slicked them back with water.
“And that’s the only thing they ever had me memorize.” he said.
Logan squinted at Virgil through his glasses. Ever since he’d gotten the hang of speaking with flat teeth he’d noticed how slurred Virgil’s speech was when he was a merman. The pointed teeth just weren’t designed to make certain noises and the way his vocal box interacted with air made it sound like he was talking with a bunch of cotton stuck in his throat.
“It’s… short. And crass.” Logan said. “Who came up with that?”
“I think it was translated to English in the 1980s.” Virgil said. “By a British person. It kind of sounds like reading a satire novel, I know. I think the original language is dead. The English was translated from… North Atlantic dialect? I don’t know. I’m not a fucking intellectual and neither was the guy that translated it, probably.”
Virgil dunked his head underwater and took a deep breath before raising up again and spitting the water out.
“Sorry. I can breathe air but it starts to taste nasty after a while.” he said.
Logan folded his legs, a trick he’d learned from volunteering with Patton in a kindergarten class, and thought for a second.
“So what were you doing in your private lessons all that time if you only had to memorize the story of how we got here?” Logan asked.
“Teaching human history and stuff.” Virgil said. “Whenever you get back down here they’ll probably have questions for you. They like to take what I teach them and turn it into poetry so it’s easier to memorize. Sometimes they change details so it sounds better though. I suspect that’s been happening for thousands of years now and so uh…”
“The history I’ve memorized is probably less than accurate.” Logan said.
Virgil let out a whistle of agreement and sympathy, something Logan had figured out by now that was a lot easier to do than speak in a more human way when you had a mer body. Virgil had caused himself a great deal of discomfort teaching Logan English for all those years. For Logan had never found it to be difficult. Virgil said the fact that human speech was easy for Logan clued him in to the fact that Logan was the one he was supposed to be looking for. His counterpart that would hopefully have a full childhood before he was exposed to the air. And he had. Sort of. He’d had to become more independent than most merpeople after his parents had died, but he did live underwater, blissfully unaware of what was coming.
And seeing what had happened to Virgil, that was likely for the best. He was supposed to be introduced to the ocean when he was twenty one, but like a typical teenager, he rebelled. So high school was binged in short homeschool sessions and socializing with other humans was done in small bites. As a result merpeople found him to be too threatening and humans found him to be too blunt. His unusually deep voice and not-quite-ridiculous-but-still-tall height didn’t help him blend in either. So he did what he did best. He avoided everyone except for Logan, his brothers, and his talent agent and made a living off of doing voiceovers and video game sound effects. A job that could be binged and he usually got quite easily with his deep voice. Nobody had to see his face. Except for when somebody dragged him out to do something “fun”.
……...
In the same way Logan was able to speak human languages fairly easily, Virgil was able to whistle and make other sounds like clicking or hissing with his mouth in a much more complex and nuanced way than other humans could. Logan found he lost the ability to fully speak mer language without sounding like a two year old with a mouth full of seaweed when he was human but Virgil’s mer speech on land sounded like it always did. Clear with a slight irregular sound that Logan now knew was a non native speaker accent and not a speech impediment.
This ability made Virgil a very good voice actor and voiceover artist. A voice actor and voiceover artist known for never appearing at conventions or taking interviews, but could occasionally be heard whistling like a bird in a Disney movie at an open mic night at a certain coffee shop that one of his brothers dragged him to. The one that wasn’t a drag queen, his fans would say. Wait, that drag queen is related to Virgil Sanders? The other fan would answer them that it was crazy right? Then they would go back to arguing about animation styles and bad movie trailers.
……..
The toddler sat on the box labeled “board games” and his oldest brother braided his hair.
“Why are you braiding her hair, Roman?” Virgil asked, tugging at his overalls. He hated wearing overalls.
The eight year old huffed. “She needs to look good for the new house, Virgil.” he said.
“That’s stupid.” Virgil said. “Houses can’t see.”
“Are you three arguing again? I’d better not hear you pulling on Trish’s hair!” came a voice from the next room.
“No, mom!” Roman called out.
Their mom left the house and soon enough they heard arguing from outside near the Uhaul. All three of the children were smart enough to try and drown it out. The one who wasn’t called Patton yet started hiding his face in his hands. Roman tied his hair off and gave him a hug. Virgil started whistling. He sounded like a bird from a movie.
“How did you do that?” Roman asked.
Virgil shrugged and just kept whistling. Outside their dad yelled something about missing the ocean and their mom yelled something about safety. Roman pushed a stuffed animal into the toddler’s hands. Virgil stopped whistling and closed the window. He wondered how he’d sleep without hearing the waves outside. He also wondered why he’d never gotten close to them.

Oh we ARE impertinent
okay since @annabetncnase asked for it, my big ole post, UNEDITED about the Lightning Thief Musical on Broadway. good luck to anyone who attempts to read this shit
ACT 1
Prologue/Day I Got Expelled
Alright so there is big boom lightning at the very very beginning of the show because Of Course there is? But it also comes with a huge flash of light, which startled liTERALLY everyone in the audience. Very fun, good use of technical effects. First guy on is James Hayden (Luke + Some) and he opens with the line. Then KRISTEN FUCKING STOKES (whom I have grown to ADORE) and the rest of the ensemble (Sally, Claiese, and Grover) come on and have this AMAZING choreography. They’re singing and all and then these curtains (which have been up and are on my pic) get pulled away from both sides by the whole onstage cast and CHRIS runs up and does this slide thingy to the very tippy top of the stage, where he sat for a moment, then turned to the audience and started. I about screamed and I’m not joking, he’s so expressive and such a great Percy (god I’m in love with him great work). As the song progressed, I was impressed by the ability with lighting use and all these cool stage tricks to have the Mrs. Dodds and also the pen/sword thing! Jorrel plays Grover so well, he’s so empathetic and caring toward Percy and I!!! So the whole story of him getting expelled is explained and god it is so fucking sad. Percy’s voice cracks. Percy’s fucking upset clearly and doesn’t understand and ouch…. ‘So if you think you are a half-blood’ is said so gently, and then THE DANCING. Chris can dance. Like well. Very well. So during ‘THis ain’t Odyssey’s Odyssey” he did a big ole kick and danced his heart out. SO good.
Strong
So obviously there’s some talking in between the first piece and this one, and there was a scene change when the lights went out and now they’re in Percy’s apartment with his mom and Gabe. Gabe is like… god you seem him and you loathe him bc he’s played so well. Percy sprays a chan of ‘aerosol’ at one point bc Gabe smells. And Chris just captures Percy’s compassion so well… He tells his mom that she doesn’t have to stay with Gabe and doesn’t deserve that and ugh so good. There are genuine blue marshmallows. and the way they did the little fire with the fog in the bucket and Percy’s mom’s comforting him hhh.
The Minotaur/The Weirdest Dream
The transfer to this scene/piece is very quick, Grover comes running in with a trash can over his head and he asks if Percy told Sally about the field trip and she said no and it was just a big mess of miscommunication. He basically gets to the point where he says the Minotaur is after Percy and holy shit. This boy is massive. And the design of it is insane and it’s got red eyes and wow. ‘I hope you’re really a SWORD” and he fight and it’s all just great. Sally goes away, Percy kills the beast and then ‘Don’t pass out…” Poseidon is in a tank top and a open Hawaiian shirt as well as flip flops and just “oh look, a man in a Hawaiian shirt’ He takes the seashell and is just the most confused. And then they bring in Annabeth, pushing her on one of those dolly things and she’s ‘floating’ and the whole thing is a big dream. Up until she tells him “You drool when you sleep” right and the thing is… the banner for CHB unfurls and the lights come back up and all of that and just it’s a true rude awakening. Then he looked around the camp and was so confused, Annabeth (beautiful, amazing, badass Kristin) started explaining what was happening and he had no clue. She then calls for Mr. D
Another Terrible Day
I don’t think you guys realize how good Jorrel is. Maybe you do but we stan Jorrel. But he comes out dressed in not matching clothes with a bright button up (pink) and plaid shirt, suspenders. He’s angry. Percy explains that he has no clue what’s going and everything’s getting explained to him with the other demigods. The other demigods are so cute and I love them so much. And he’s yelling through a megaphone. Jorrel can do so many roles so well and he did a great job. “You’re a horse?!” also he just clops. Like it’s human legs. Clip clop bitch. With a tail.
Their Sign
Again the transition from the first song to this second one is really fast. Chiron’s comforting but god is Percy angry. I love that tbh. Chris is clearly upset and he feels for Percy. And he shows it. He’s upset and then Percy’s voice goes all soft… Love that. Luke starts being buddy-buddy and showing him that it’s gonna be alright. Supposedly.
Put You In Your Place
Fucking. Sarah. Goddamn. I can’t believe how good she is. We stan so hard. Her fit? Great. Her voice? Belted. Awesome. Annabeth truly out here though. SHe’s intimidating as fuck and she knows what she’s about. There’s so much cool battle choreo in this scene and it just looks great. There’s blocking and stabbing and it looks awesome. Also that guitar riff that she comes in with is rad. And then the bathroom thing. Great. Percy’s cornered and it clearly shows that his powers came as a last resort with stress and the way they flashed the blue lights is just great I love that so fucking much. And they’re asking about the way he figured out those powers and they’re freaked out. Cool shit. Also “The plan would have worked either way.” Holy fucking shit. Annabeth is fucking scary as hell. She gives zero fucks about Percy at the beginning
The Campfire Song
The way they made the campfire is so cool! Very techy. And I didn’t realize they’re sitting around the campfire eating dinner together as a camp. Very family much love I’m a big fan. They’re putting the food into the fire and then complaining and I love it. Percy’s so sweet trying to talk about his mom and then come back around once they tell him what’s going on. Also they have a cute dance they do together. SO unified and lovely. And then THE FUCKING SIGN COMES. Percy’s sign. The whole thing. They’re looking and he’s like “Is that a fork?” “I’m the Son of Poseidon? sweet!) Everyone freaks out when they’re sure he’s a son of Poseidon. Percy is told to go see the “Mummy in the attic” “That’s old people talk for Mom, right?” Cue the Oracle.
The Oracle
This sounds so dumb but kinda like… found the Oracle impressive. Spooky. 10/10 Also… side note… Chris plays Percy with a lot of random mannerisms and movement and it’s really quite fun to watch. Anyway the Oracle is big spooky and she’s in a huge dress and she’s pointing to him and it has all the people who are in the next scene sitting there underneath and moving the dress. Big cool. And the vocals! Sis can sing. And it’s just beautiful bc then Percy has to see Mr. D and Chiron, the first of whom wants to turn Percy into a dolphin. “Percy you have no choice.” “You’re expelling me again?” Basically Percy is getting kicked out of camp bc of his unwillingness to do the quest. And there’s the transition to Good Kid my friends.
Good Kid
Guys oh fuck. Oh shit. Chris just really came out here to kill with the vocals tonight. And My heart? He kinda does a fist thing toward what would be the Big House and walks off to sulk, starting the song and walking around being angry ugh. He climbs up the back of the stage (which is essentially scaffolding) and sits at the end to deliver the sad part of the line when everything goes piano-y and soft and essentially that’s him sitting at the docks at the lake and watching the water. Luke later finds him (“If you’re a son of Poseidon, don’t hide at the lake, that’s where everyone will look.” and talks to him about the quest, where they figure out his mom would be in the Underworld if she was anywhere. Also there’s a trident where Percy is the middle prong and the other two are blue and shine on him UGH yeah
Killer Quest
“Yeah I’ll do it!” Was delivered so well, so sweet and innocent. This kid just misses his mom. Also since when did Luke and Percy get a bro handshake? Grover shows up with a bunch of bags and says he’ll go too (Luke’s chilling in the background) and he gives him the official questing backpack. I think Luke leaves at this point to get some shoes. Annabeth is there with a bag telling him that she’s going too and that her mom will be excited and they’re all dancing together and god I’m so emotional. They dance and they all work as a team so well great work you guys. And the lights turn out with them starting their quest!
Lost
Return from intermission with a literal bang, as there are three demon triplet math teachers on the bus, with Percy on top and Grover and Annabeth inside. The driver’s screaming, they’re screaming, Percy hops off the top and then fights the fury outside and eventually… The bus explodes, with confetti raining over the audience. Awesome. The piece of paper is in Annabeth’s bag pocket actually. And Percy’s trying to be a reassuring friend to Grover, who’s freaking out, and he’s trying to keep Annabeth safe too… ugh great stuff. They move all together when they say “We’re lost in the woods” for the first time. Their priorities really become clear later in the song when they talk about what they’re wanting. Grover could not be more enthusiastic about the squirrel. Also this is the first time we see Annabeth laugh at Percy “I think that’s kind of nuts” is the line and she turns around to laugh into her hand. PURE AS HELL. Wandering aimless through the forest occurs for a minute longer until Percy decides. This point in the musical made me realize that these kids are young. Like 11 or 12. I love that. I felt that in this one. The kids go into Auntie M’s art studio. Annabeth’s asked to take a picture and she’s checking her hair in her dagger, meanwhile Percy’s getting a bad feeling now and Grover’s looking more and more intently at Uncle Ferdinand. Percy is then asked to join in. No camera you say? MEDUSA REVEAL. They do a big battle and Grover ends up picking up Percy and swinging him around to cut off Medusa’s head. Which gets thrown in her own fridge for the time being. Grover leaves.
My Grand Plan
Bitch. This was the moment I teared up a lot. She sat down and started singing and I felt. I FELT. I’m depressed as fuck at the moment and I started feeling things bc of this damn song. Kristin Stokes I love you. Anyway, she’s singing and Percy intently watches, and she’s telling the gods to Wise Up by pointing directly to the sky. SHe’s saying BITCH YOU WILL NOTICE ME. And the pain in her voice when she explains her family situation. The soft part? She’s talking directly to Percy and looking at him, telling him what’s going on. Dear god did I feel. I’m so proud of her my queen Annabeth Chase. She finishes explaining and Percy says: “No more fighting” and she says “Not between us anyway” and they shake on it. I love that. Then Percy decides to have a little fun with the gods and boxes up Medusa’s head. “THey’ll think we’re impertinent Percy.” “Oh, we are impertinent.” He writes both Annabeth and his own name on that box and ships it via the Hermes express. Grover comes back in. “While you guys were in here not solving all our problems, I found these!” “Three Amtrack tickets!?”
Drive
We boarding the train. WE singing. Life is dandy again. Percy sticks his hand in a dog cage and it bites him. They take a tractor which is scaffolding tied to a wheelchair which a guy pulls. They meet Bianca and then they meet Ares after arguing with each other. Cool guy. Also Percy looks so free and proud of himself when he’s on the back of the motorcycle “I mean, look at where I am!” He’s so PROUD holy shit. Also they all put one foot forward during the different lines god the Choreography so fucking cute dear lord. Anyway they’re going and going and they meet Bianca who’s got braids and then they move on!!! I love them! I’m proud. They take another bus. “This time we just won’t blow it up.” They’re sitting on the bus (or train not really sure) and all asleep. Percy’s dreaming now. And Annabeth and Grover are also sleeping. Each is on a chair and it’s kind of cute tbh.
The Weirdest Dream (Reprise)
Percy’s standing there in his dream and he’s very confused. This is ‘scary” and I love that. He’s standing and listening to the these people in his dream talking. Kronos is so fucking scary they literally make him scary. His voice is so deep and spooky and fuck man. Luke’s talking to him (downward, into a pit, technically on the top of the scaffolding) and he’s in a cloak and Kronos says Percy’s name and the lights flash all sorts of colors and then he’s back in his seat. Chris does a bunch of spins until he gets back to his seat and Grover’s shaking him awake, saying he was screaming. Annabeth can’t sleep either. Everyone’s on edge. Thalia’s name was mentioned in the dream and Grover sits up straighter and says he hasn’t heard that name in awhile.
Tree on the Hill
Oh shit this was so emotional. So Grover explains that he didn’t tell Percy this any sooner because he was afraid Percy might not want him to come. Big sad. But he starts the song and let me tell you I never felt like crying more. So Grover’s narrating this story and Percy’s listening on the train and above them, like with the main bridge, Annabeth, Luke and Thalia are slow mo acting out the details of the story until Thalia becomes a tree. Thalia is the same girl that plays Clarriese, and every other character almost omg. But when he’s explaining her turning into a tree, Annabeth and Luke stand behind Thalia and become the branches. So symbolic and so beautiful. Percy comforts Grover and then it’s the last stop.
DOA
THis song. At first I didn’t like it on the soundtrack. Skipped it. But goddamn what a bop. The sparkly dress, the funky tunes, the control of all of the kids so they all dance together. Also dying in a really big bathtub. Yeah. Real. The way they did the elevator with the lights moving in the background was actually super convincing and I Loved that. The dress sparkles all over and all the other background people are in cloaks are dancing too, including James who makes this beautiful jump I love it so much. But they’re all scared and cornered against the light and then have to reconvene together. They all get up from the ground frazzled and then Percy’s shoes start doing something weird. His feet start flying away from him and he’s confused and freaking out and all of a sudden they’re in front of the pit. Oh god the pit was so cool. I thought the feet were shaking and it’s so cool and and the pit literally looks like a pit. I know they’re looking into a light but it’s so scary! The shoes go down into the pit and the tartar sauce joke is made. I love this. SO scary. AND BOLT REVEAL. The line that Percy’s says “betrayed by a friend’ that accuses Annabeth after she pulls the bolt from his bag. I gasped. And then Hades comes around and he’s in a sparkly jacket and says he’ll have his friends and his mom back if he gives him the bolt and then gives them a chance to decide. Everyone walks off stage and he stands there and debates.
Son of Poseidon
Percy’s mom comes out and tells him that what belongs to the sea can always return. She does a little loop around him and he spins in a circle and follows her for a moment. He starts singing and GOD CHRIS. He’s realizing that he has the shell and all that. He blows the conch and a blue light shines on the right side of the stage, the PORTAL. They jump through the portal and they’re all excited that they survived. Standing on the beach and Percy pulled new shoes out and starts putting them on. He tells them that they’re his two best friends and he hugs them close and fuck man the original trio feels. They summon Ares. Ares comes out and he’s fucking ripped and got a pipe. A literal pipe. They start fighting and it looks like they’re losing, Annabeth lost her dagger (which was strapped to her thigh goddamn) and Grover’s down, Percy’s lost his sword. “Percy get to the ocean” He runs to the stage, Kristin and Jorrel run backstage and deliver the blowers with TP. “How about a lot of it!”He yelled and theres the music and he’s relishing the moment, Chris is just giving it his fucking all and there’s a lot going on and I just.. Was amazed beautiful. Great work cast. Ares is washed away and then Percy says: “You can escort us, back to camp.” They’re escorted back.
Last Day of Summer
Percy is standing there and he’s stunned essentially. What does he do now? He gets a letter from his mom with her newest sculpture and that she’s going to school. Annabeth passes him and talks to him about going home and she calls him Seaweed Brain. He and Luke battle when he accuses Luke of being the lightning thief. Luke fucking says yes right and then STABS HIM after trying to convince Annabeth to pick the right side (his side) and she disarms him but he takes a knife and stabs Percy. He runs away, Percy’s on the ground, Annabeth’s at his side and holding him. She’s giving him emergency ambrosia as he’s dying and he looks like he’s gone but then he comes back. She says Seaweed Brain and he says Wise girl and hugs him to her and SHIT man.
Bring on the Monsters
Percy motivates the camp. Tells them it’s real, shits getting real and they need to get ready. He’s got his sword and his fresh stab wound and he motivates them to get going, all of them sing and then Chris does his beautiful solo thing and stands in front with his sword and they’re all singing in the background. When he maintains his line on the bottom people are passing back and forth around him and touching his shoulder as they pass him and he yells excitedly back next summer at one point. And they all stand together in the back and the spotlight hits him as he says he’ll be back next summer and the guitar ends. damn.
The curtains come up and they’re all there taking bows and I love them. Main points: these boys flexible, they’re all doing kicks and all sorts of shit like that, jumping up and down and dancing as well as singing, I’m very impressed. also Chris plays Percy so well. He’s got all the things that were in my head for Percy for all the quirks and ADHD and UGH I love that. Kristin rocked my fucking world and Jorrel played every character so cleanly and had such great vocals. I love them. I love them all. The end.
If you made it to the end of this fucking long ass post send me an ask or a message bc I’m proud of you and you deserve a reward

Compersion: Chapter 1 - The New Girl (Jolyne x reader)
Hoooo boi, I initially intended this to be a one-off Anasui/Reader/Jolyne threesome fic then somehow managed to create this monster of an AU. This is now going to be a multichapter poly relationship fic, hopefully with decent character development? I just love Stone Ocean so much  @peachfyzzy my angel you can consider this series as my contribution to your self ship week since low key, this is my self ship guilty pleasure 💗 Special thanks to the lovely @cocojumbohno for discussing the bar cameos with me! 💗 This chapter is purely Jolyne x Reader  Warnings: clubbing, alcohol, lots of making out, heavy petting, a small sprinkling of other ships if you look closely, sort of public sex/slight exhibitionism?
Modern Retail AU 4952 words NSFW under the cut
Green Dolphin Street has always been one of your favourite parts of town, its quirky atmosphere and cute stores drew you in and now here you are, lucky enough to have a job at Miu Miuller’s, an independent boutique specialising in bright, outlandish fashion.
You enter the back office a few minutes late. Weather Report is sat at his desk reading a TV guide, he’s possibly the most chill manager in existence so not even an eyebrow is raised as you put your belongings in your locker and join your co-workers.
“Morning!”
Aside from your manager, there’re two others in the room: Anasui who looks up but doesn’t bother to acknowledge your greeting any further than that and Gwess who’s just made coffee offering you your usual with a good morning and a huge grin.
No customers are currently on the shop floor but you’re curious why all of the staff have gathered in the back, you don’t remember a meeting being scheduled. You thank Gwess and take a sip of the hot, bitter liquid, revelling in the feeling of it slowly waking you up.
There’s a rapid series of knocks on the door, Weather Report puts down the guide and gets up to let in the visitor. Your breath catches as you watch the woman walk in, to say she’s gorgeous feels like an understatement. She’s tall, tattooed and with glossy, bluish-black and green hair tied in an elaborate style, her spider web print outfit a perfect fit for a place like Miuller’s. She looks like she could beat you up and spit you straight back out without so much as breaking a sweat –in other words, the woman is completely your type and it takes all your early morning energy not to gawk at her.
Weather’s soft voice cuts through the stunned silence.
“I’d like to introduce you all to our new employee, Jolyne Cujoh. She’ll be joining us for a few months.”
Shit. She’s going to be working here? This could either go really well or most likely really badly. Workplace crushes can be a pain in the ass.
Gwess has the fakest smile forced on her face as she introduces herself in a sickly, sweet voice, grasping Jolyne’s hand a little too hard. She always hates newbies, it took even you a while to gain her favour and you expect she’ll try to rope you into pulling a few pranks on her later.
You’re next, you say your name trying not to stutter, why do you always have to get so flustered? Especially now, you’d read you only have 7 seconds to make an impression on someone and you feel you’ve already messed those seconds up. The handshake you give her is as brief as you can make it without seeming rude, not wanting her to pick up on their light trembling.
Anasui’s attitude has completely changed, he’s making that face…looks like you aren’t the only one who’s interested in the new girl and if Anasui is your competition this is going to be hell for you, he’s extremely possessive to say the least. You hope he hasn’t caught on, you don’t think you’re that obvious when you fancy someone, not to him anyway. When she offers her hand, he goes in to kiss the back of it but her reflexes are too quick, she jerks her hand back before he can do anything. Quite frankly his actions are giving you second-hand embarrassment, it’s like he doesn’t understand this isn’t appropriate at work or in general if you think about it, what a creep.
Weather Report turns to you unfazed with what has just happened, you suspect he’ll be having a private chat with him later. “Y/N, I’d like for you to show Jolyne around. Demonstrate how things work around here.”
Before you can agree Anasui starts whining. “Weather, you should let me do it. I have a lot more experience. I’ll do a better job at training her.” Weather Report looks from Anasui, to you, to Jolyne and sighs. He’d prefer Anasui to help with the accounts but is it worth dealing with him complaining all day if not all week?
“Okay but you’re doing these spreadsheets when you’ve finished.”
The phone rings and Weather Report reaches over to answer it. “Excuse me.”
With Weather distracted, Anasui grabs Jolyne by the wrist and leads her into the main part of the shop. You turn to Gwess when you’re sure you two are alone and out of earshot of the others. “What the fuck was that?”
You hear an ‘ow’ from the main room which taking Jolyne’s apparent athleticism into account is probably her paying back her captor. How he hasn’t been fired yet you do not know.
“Looks like Narc’s got a new obsession …are you a little jealous?~”
“Me? Jealous? No way. I’m just saying this is going to be a fun summer.” You say with a hint of bitterness that Gwess doesn’t miss, jealous isn’t the word you would have chosen but you hate how right Gwess can be sometimes.
“I can tell you now that girl is trouble, you don’t need her you’ve got me~!” Her smile becomes sinister. “It’ll be entertaining watching her suffer with his bullshit, don’t worry we’ll have so much fun messing with them~”
The rest of your morning is spent sorting out the new stock without Gwess’s company so you’re relieved when it’s finally your lunch break. You’re surprised by Jolyne coming to sit next to you nibbling on a cookie she’d stolen from the kitchen as you begin to dig into the food you’d prepared that morning. Apparently she’s managed to free herself from Anasui’s grasp, though with what happened earlier this should not be a shock. If anyone could do that, it was her.
“How’re you finding it here?” you ask.
“Better than I thought. I’d heard a rumour that Miu was a ratty, stuck up bitch but I showed up late on my first day and no one even said anything!” she smiles gleefully.
Jolyne isn’t wrong about Miucca Miuller from what you’ve seen of her although you’ve only met her once; luckily she has a few other branches and other business to attend to.
“Don’t worry about it, we barely see her. I’m nearly always late too. I literally entered a few minutes before you,” you laugh. “So I could sleep in and no one would tell me off? Awesome!”
“I wouldn’t push it. Weather is usually calm but you do not want to make him angry, trust me.”
She leans in closer to you, “Got something to share?”
You look around and lower your voice, “You should have seen him when this Karen-“
Anasui slams the door open, of course it wouldn’t take him long to find Jolyne again like he’d allow himself to be separated from his brand new fixation. You’ll give him credit where it’s due the guy is relentless and if looks could kill well…you’d be very dead.
“Jolyne, I need you back here.” He spits out. Reluctantly, Jolyne gets up and brushes the crumbs off her pants onto the carpet.
“I’ll catch you later, yeah?”
You’re totally not staring at her ass as she walks away.
***
Over the next few days you spend more time with Jolyne which manages to piss off both Anasui and Gwess. Each day that passes you find yourself falling for her a little more. She fits in nicely in the dynamic of your team, the bunch of weirdos that you all are.
One day Emporio comes over from the bakery next door with some freshly made treats and immediately takes a liking to Jolyne, it warms your heart seeing her as she thanks the kid for the pastry patting him on his head and striking up a conversation about baseball, recognising his uniform. Can this woman get any more perfect? It’s just so adorable that she’s the type to have a tough outer shell and a soft, squishy centre. If you really think about it of course she isn’t perfect, even in the small time you’ve known her you’ve seen this, most recently you witnessed her getting a little bit too feisty with the customers though you don’t blame her, retail takes a toll on anyone’s patience.
Saturday finally arrives and after a long week you’re glad you aren’t covering the weekend shift. Your friend from Uni, Dio, has invited you out to the local LGBT bar, just the two of you. Your relationship is purely platonic, having met him in your first year and somehow you two had just stuck together ever since. He lives only a few streets away so you’d decided to get ready at his, spending a good few hours making sure you look your best. Dio, persuasive as he is, gets you to take wine into the taxi much to the annoyance of your driver, sharing it straight from the bottle as you catch up with each other’s lives.
You can hear the dull thud of the beat vibrating through the air as you exit the cab outside of the bar. The bouncers thoroughly check your ID before allowing you both in, Dio pushing the inner doors in overdramatically and posing as Sissy That Walk plays in the background. You just know you’re not drunk enough to deal with his club bullshit yet and gesture to him that’ll you’ll be going over to the bar at the side of the dancefloor.
You head over expecting him to follow you, there’s not too big of a queue but some ginger guy is badly flirting with the bartender, you say badly but somehow his cheesy lines are working; the two seem to be enthralled in each other to the point where people are not getting their drinks. You suspect the bartender gets hit on a lot, because not only is he unusually handsome but his deep purr of a voice you can just make out over the music really is something else. The man standing to the left of you is becoming increasingly irritated at the exchange.
“Um HELLO can I get some service please?” he yells, snapping his fingers in their direction.
The bartender caresses the ginger’s face before walking past the man who huffs some expletives and something that to you sounds like “Don’t you know you I am!!!” you have no recognition of him if he is famous but you’re familiar with the attitude. You feel no sympathy for him as the bartender stands in front of you ignoring the man entirely and instead asking what you’d like. You order something light and watch in amusement as the other guy storms off, from your experience probably about to give the manager hell.
Instead of joining you, Dio has already captured the attention of one guy, he has always been remarkably good at picking up people, they’re already kissing…maybe you should ask him for some tips sometime. Well fuck, you can’t exactly join him now, you scan the crowd for potential groups to join as you take your order and drink.
There’re some other very interesting people out tonight. You observe a woman in a Marilyn Manson t-shirt yelling at the fruit machine in corner hitting it with each time she loses and a guy in a cow? (you think it’s meant to be a cow) suit is throwing shapes in the middle of the dance floor, next to him… your heart pounds as you spot the familiar black and green of Jolyne?
It’s definitely her. Although her hair is styled differently today instead of a braid her spare hair runs loose down her back, it really suits her.
You down the rest of your drink pretty quickly and use the sudden burst of confidence it gives you to approach her, pushing past the cow man to reach out and tapping her back to grab her attention.
“Jolyne, hey!”
She whips around and glowers apparently prepared to fight off some sleazy guy. It takes a second but all the aggression melts away as her face lights up in recognition and she squeals out your name and basically jumps on you, you’re glad it’s dark because no one can see you get all flustered.
“It’s so good to see you!” she says in your ear before turning back to her group and pulling you into the circle. “Hermes, F.F, meet Y/N”
The one she points out as F.F gives you a wave and Hermes gives you a nod, the surroundings are too loud and chaotic to bother with formal introductions.
“We’ve heard a lot about you-” you don’t see it but Jolyne elbows her friend who hisses in surprise and quickly changes the question, “did you come here by yourself?”
“No, I came with a mate but he’s busy…” You gesture to Dio messily making out with his victim in the corner on one of the leather sofas, it’s shocking to you that he hasn’t left with the guy already. The girls flash you a look of sympathy and F.F pats your shoulder.
“You should join us!” she chirps.
You take her up on her offer and dance with them as the alcohol tingles in you veins. Some of your favourite songs come on but you’re dancing so near your crush that it’s all you can think about. The crowd has grown much larger now and your forced closer to Jolyne, you’re practically grinding on her at this point. A song you don’t recognise with a slower, more sensual rhythm begins to play and you feel her hands snake around your waist, pulling you closer as you sway to the beat. You turn around in her arms so you’re facing her, your chests now pressed together instead. When did her mouth get so close…
“I didn’t know you were-”
You don’t even know if it was you that leant in or her but your lips meet cutting off your sentence which you’re happy about really because it’s was a pretty big assumption to make, a variety of people come here but the thought quickly dies at the softness of her mouth that starts to move against your own.
The kiss is slow, an ebb and flow of lips and tongue, maybe it’s the alcohol talking but it’s the best kiss you’ve ever had like this.  The people and the sounds around you fade into the background as you focus on the girl before you. The combination of the heat from her body flush against yours and the alcohol makes you grow so hot, the feeling is addictive and you think you could do this forever.
“Ewwww, gross!” Jolyne moves her head up pulling away from the kiss to see Hermes make a face teasingly.
She sticks out her tongue and flips her the middle finger of the hand not wrapped around you. ”You’re just jealous I’m making out with a hot girl and you aren’t!”
“Oh yeah?” in response Hermes turns to F.F and gives her quick peck with a loud mwah. The three burst out laughing and you wonder if there’s something more going on in this friendship but hey it’s none of your business. You focus on the contact you have with Jolyne, you’re held so close to her you can feel the curves and edges of her body, smell the heady scent of her perfume and feel her breath fan over you. Fuck you need more of her. Your hand instinctively entwines itself with hers, your palms are sweating but you hope she hasn’t noticed as you take a leaf out of Dio’s book, pulling her out of the crowd and guiding her onto the nearest free space of sofa with a light nudge of her shoulders. She willingly sits, a look of utter surprise plastered across her face, as you swing your leg over to straddle her. In this position you feel a mild discomfort at the pool of wetness in underwear as your hips press into her, you ache for release.
You take a new approach to kissing, trying a style that you feel is more her than you, lightly biting her bottom lip, sucking on it before tangling your tongue with hers past her teeth. She reciprocates by pushing back playfully, massaging one of your breasts and her other hand sliding down to your ass as you continue with your mouth until your head spins and you can barely breathe.
You sit up completely flushed and breathless, in your peripheral vision you see Dio flash you the filthiest smirk and a thumbs up from his corner. You roll your eyes, he’ll probably tell you later this was all his grand plan to get you laid.
“I never expected you’d be so wild…I have an idea, come on!”
This time it’s your turn to be dragged, Jolyne leads you across the dance floor forcefully pushing through the crowd, you hold on to her tightly so you don’t get lost amongst the sea of people. You see where she appears to be leading you and you can’t help the excitement grow in your core.
There’s not a single person in the girl’s bathroom which for a Saturday night is pretty weird, you’re lead into one of the middle cubicles giving you two even more privacy. Jolyne closes the stall door behind you and slides the lock shut.
The heavy feeling of anticipation sits in your stomach as you see Jolyne fully for the first time in the bright light of the bathroom, her lipstick has smudged (your heart flutters as you realise you were the one to do that) but it just increases her hotness and your arousal.  You meet her striking gaze free from the stares of others and without the constant pressure of the crowd around you.
Not a moment later you’re pinned to one of the walls and you cry out as her mouth finds your neck sucking at your skin as she pushes your legs apart with her foot. She brings her thigh up to your aching pussy and starts rubbing it slowly back and forth against you. You’re glad no one’s around because you can’t stop the sounds that leave your mouth and they’re loud. Her lips find your mouth again swallowing the sounds and her tongue slips inside as a hand touches under your shirt and into your bra to tease one of your nipples. The combined sensations are so pleasurable your legs shake and you grip onto her arms to hold yourself steady, her barely able to support you like this. Spurred on by your actions Jolyne repositions herself and uses her strength to lift you up, your back still pushed against the cubicle wall. In this position, your legs instinctively wrap around her waist as you continue to make out. In the quietness of the bathroom the little noises of your messy kissing echo lewdly.
There’s a loud bang as the door is pushed open and it sounds like a large group of girls have entered from the volume of the talking. Jolyne retracts, putting you down gently as not to make too much noise and places a finger against your lips. A tingle of arousal flows straight through you as you realise if you make sounds the others will instantly know what’s going on. She brings up her thigh once again this time gripping your hips and forcing you down, sliding against you more rigorously, you can’t stop yourself from enjoying this, your hips frantically moving on their own in her hold. The pressure of pleasure inside you builds faster than you can handle and one more stroke hitting your clit is all it takes to push you over the edge releasing all of the tension in your body. You moan letting the feeling wash over you but predicting this one of Jolyne’s hands comes up to cover your mouth managing to suppress the majority of the sound.
You pant into her hand, legs weak as the aftershocks cause you to tremble in her arms. This is so unfair… so of course you decide to get payback and catch her by surprise by boldly thrusting your own hand down the front of her pants and begin circling the pads of two fingers over her. The reaction you get is more than you expected, her body tenses and she gasps, a bit too loudly. You pause, wondering if you’ve gone too far but she breathes into your ear in the quietest voice imaginable, “Don’t stop.”
You shudder, with two simple words she’s managed to turn you on again. The girls don’t change their conversation and no one sounds like they are acting any differently than before if they’ve heard so you begin moving your fingers in circles again, dipping down to gather more of her juices before gradually increasing the pressure and speed of your movements on her clit until you find a rhythm that makes her bite her lip. She rests her head on your shoulder and you realise she’s about to reach her peak, your other hand holds her as steady as you can in your state as she digs her nails into you cumming on your fingers, muffling the sound of her release with your skin and clothing.
You carefully pull your hand out and you two make eye contact, with the release of the tension it seems like you’re both trying hard not to laugh.
It only takes a few minutes more with the sound of the door closing all need you let out the laughter you’d been holding back.
“You could have got us caught!” you giggle.
Jolyne raises an eyebrow, “Do you care?”
“Not when it’s you.” you say as you move in to kiss her briefly again, it’s a stupid line but you’re drunk and that’s how you feel.
Your touch the skin of her exposed waist, brushing against her navel piercing. You may have both just cum already but you can’t help but want more. You stumble at bit your balance still off from your orgasm and get down on your knees before her, not caring that the floor is filthy and tug at the waistband of her pants attempting to pull them down.
There’s another bang as the bathroom door opens once more. Looks like you two will have to be quiet again, you’re hoping you’ll make her scream this time.
“Jolyneeee! It’s 2 am we’re leaving!” You recognise Hermes’ voice in your haze and Jolyne throws her head back with a groan of frustration.
“Yare yare you two have the worst timing! Can’t you wait, like, 10 more minutes?”
Two voices shout back no.
“Fuck’s sake, fine I’m coming out now.”
You stand up and reach out to her with a sense of desperation; you don’t want your time together to end. “Come home with me.”
Jolyne takes your hand interlocking your fingers and running her thumb over the back. “Earlier I kinda promised Hermes and Foo we’d have a girls night with takeout and movies.  I’m not gonna let them down, sorry.” She pulls you towards her and gives you a tight squeeze. “If I took you back with us, I wouldn’t be able to take my hands off of you…” her other hand ghosts over your thigh before she moves away completely.
You try your best not to look dejected but your smile doesn’t quite reach your eyes. “It’s okay, I get it.”
“We’ll continue this where we left off another time.” The words ‘another time’ catch in your mind and your hopes rise, she wants to see you again! “Have you got a way to get back home?”
You nod. You’ll have to see if Dio is still here which is unlikely so you’ll probably just catch a cab from outside.
She reaches into her pocket and pulls out her mobile offering it to you.
“I can’t believe we’re only exchanging numbers now.” You say entering your number and handing it back to her. She taps the screen a few times and your phone vibrates in response. It’s a text with just a single heart emoji and you blush, it shouldn’t affect you this much you think as you update your contacts.
She leans into you and places a chaste final kiss on your swollen lips which you are reluctant to let her draw back from. Her hand untangles from yours and she unlocks the door, stepping out to greet her friends.
“Text me when you get home!” you call out.
“Byeee, get back safe!” her two friends wave you goodbye and exit the bathroom, Jolyne turns to give you one last glance back, winking seductively before following them out.
You gaze at your reflection in the mirror, you’re all messed up but your mind is preoccupied, racing with what’s just happened. This is what you’d be fantasising about but it brings up so many annoying questions. What are you to Jolyne? Is this something casual or something more? She said she wanted to see you again, but in what way? Ugh you wish you’d just asked her how she saw you because now you’re gonna not stop thinking about this or maybe it’s too early to even think about it. You don’t know. With her being a co-worker you’ll have to be more careful than usual with this, fucking up the workplace dynamic is not on your agenda, although watching Anasui throw a bitch fit about you getting with Jolyne would be hilarious…
More girls enter the bathroom and you decide it’s time to leave, there’s no use wallowing in your thoughts here.  A woman with short, pink hair stands at the sink next to you and begins topping up her lip gloss, before reaching back into her expensive-looking bag and pulling out a pack of wet wipes, turning to offer you one.
“I love your make-up, but from one girl to another you might want to lose the green before you head back out.”
Green?
You stare at your reflection once more. Fuck. How had you missed Jolyne’s lipstick that has managed to get everywhere. Next time you’ll suggest she should wear a matte liquid type instead of her usual or not… it’s sort of hot. You thank the woman and wipe off the stains, under them there’s the telltale sign of marks that, although are light now, will fully darken by the morning. You hope some heavy-duty concealer will be able to cover them otherwise you’ll be wearing a scarf in the height of summer…
It’s quarter past 2 when you make your way through the crowd of sweaty, writhing bodies and head out towards the sofas, Dio is still there so you decide to let him know you’re going home.
“Aww did your lady abandon you?” Dio taunts as he judgementally looks you up and down, “You’re a right state.”
You scoff but you’re too tired to come up with any witty banter right now.
“You don’t look much better, I’m going to head back now anyway.”
“We were just thinking of leaving too. Would you like to share an Uber with us?” Dio’s lover asks, sounding awfully polite while Dio narrows his eyes in a way that screams “don’t you dare say yes.”
“Yeah that’d be great!” Dio facepalms and you’re satisfied to have thrown a wrench in the works, serves him right for ditching you at the earliest opportunity without a hint of remorse. That’s just Dio though and you aren’t really that mad at him, he is what he is and to be fair, you did choose the bar over him.
The journey back is awkward. Dio’s partner, whose name he has told you but you’ve forgotten (even drunk, you’re too embarrassed to ask again) tries to start a conversation with you. Dio can’t stand this and forces himself in at every opportunity, not that you mind in this instance, you’re too busy thinking about Jolyne.
By the time you arrive the two have gotten pretty handsy but still you follow the pair into Dio’s place, they find another room as you gather up the belongings of yours you’d left there earlier. Through the walls you start hearing loud, deep moans so you sneak out without a word, shutting the door behind you as quietly as you can…there’s no point interrupting them and if you did you’re sure Dio would kill you. Instead you send him a text to say you’ve gone home. You predict you’ll be getting some juicy gossip back in the morning.
As you walk back to your place your phone buzzes, your pulse racing as you see that it’s from Jolyne and you open up the message, too eager to wait to read it.
Heyyyyyy we got pizza did u get bk ok? 😘❤️
It’s a simple friendly text but you can’t help but goofily smile at your screen as you reach your front door. You type back that you got home fine and that you want pizza too, you spend a good few minutes trying to choose an appropriate emoji before sending off the text, using the bathroom and heading to bed without bothering to remove your clothes or makeup. She doesn’t take long to reply.
Let’s grab sum after work maybe we can eat something else too ;)
You think it’s a good idea to send some dumb gif in response, the tiredness hitting you like a truck and you allow yourself to drift off to sleep still fully dressed, blissfully ignorant of the drama you might have just inflicted on your workplace.

Stu x reader fic where they go on a carnival date and Stu tries to win all the games for his s/o
Carnival || Stu Macher x Reader
Tumblr media
School was out, and you walked out of your English class witha skip in your step. You had no work today, the weather was beautiful, and Stu saidhe had a surprise for you after class! As you headed down the stairway, thelanky male came up behind you and gripped his hands around your waist, pickingyou up bridal style. “Hey babe!” He said as you giggled. The two of you lockedlips for a good few seconds as he carried you the rest of the way down thestairway. It was late September, and autumn rolled in with its beautiful multicoloredleaves. “So, what about that surprise?” You asked as he set you down on the sidewalk, digging the keys to his car out of his pocket. “You’ll have to see!” He explained, now holding your hand with his keys in the other.
Giggling, the two of you headed towards the parking lot and got into his car. He crankedthe engine and you two were on your way. Little did you know; this was going tobe an amazing night. Stu had realized lately you’ve been having a pretty shittylife, and he really wanted to cheer you up, so a surprise date would surely dothe trick!
Afteran hour and a half of a drive, you woke up to see that you were two towns over,in their annual autumn carnival/fair parking lot! Stu had a huge smile on hisface as he poked you awake, “Wake up baby!” he hummed into your ear. “We’re here!”He said, unbuckling your seatbelt for you. You stirred in your sleep, sittingup and yawning. “You brought me to the carnival? Oh Stu…” You didn’t know howto thank him, so you trapped him in a hug from over the center console. Hehugged you back, tighter than you could. “Let’s go have fun now, hm? I love you.”He gave your head a big kiss and then let you go. You returned his “I love you”and stepped out of the car, racing him up to the ticket booth.
As youstood in line behind five people, you two were bouncing out of your shoes. Thenyou paused, quickly looking down, heart dropping. “Whats wrong, baby?” He askedyou, throwing one of his arms around your shoulder. “I… didn’t bring any money.”You admitted. “Its okay! I was going to pay for you anyways, don’t worry aboutit, sexy.” He smiled at you, giving your nose a cute little boop. You weakly smiledback, regretting even bringing it up now.
Afteryou two got your tickets to get in, you stood in awe at the lights from all ofthe rides and games.  Stu dragged youalong, going on all of the rides first of course! You particularly enjoyed theswing ride. Stu’s favorite was the teapots! You almost threw up from how fasthe spun the two of you, but he really enjoyed getting to see you smile andlaugh like you hadn’t done in so long.
Thencame for the games. Stu tried to beat you at bottle toss but you were too good! You got him a tiger keychain and he hooked it to his belt loop, treasuring itdearly. He tried his best at the Test your Strength game with the hammer, andgot you a pretty big teddy bear. He spoiled you in stuffed animals that evening. He got you a dolphin in a basketball game, a lizard in a shooting game, a cowin a balloon game, and another bear in a fishing game! Stu got some heartglasses in the shooting game for himself.
As youtwo were hanging out by the snacks, chilling with cotton candy and fries, youpointed out a huge llama plushie. It was so oversized, you didn’t think it’dfit in the car, but he was bright yellow and so fucking fluffy. You wanted him.Bad. Stu strutted up to the game, which happened to be a Duck Rack game. It seemedeasy. Throw the ball, knock over the ducks that went by on the little rack. Youhad to hit seven ducks in a row to get a big stuffy, five for a medium, threefor a small, and anything less would get you a keychain or a tiny plush.
Stu had a pretty good aim, so youcheered him on, holding all of your babies to your chest. He strategically sentfive ducks down, but as he hit the last two, they just wouldn’t budge. He grewangry at this, though seemingly calm at first. “Hey! It was stuck!” He said, brows furrowed. “I’m sorry, man, that’s just how the game goes. “No, the gameis rigged, and you had the ducks so they can’t fall over!” Stu’s face was redwith anger, and you sure as hell didn’t want to see him like that anymore, soyou lightly grabbed his hand. “Come on, it’s okay! I’ve got a bunch anyways, don’t worry.” You cooed, and he sighed, nodding. “You’re right. Let’s go home, away from this jackass.” He huffed, and led you to the car. As you got in, hestood still in front of the door. “Hey, one sec, I think I forgot something.Stay here.” He said with a smile, and ran back towards the place.
Thirty minutes passed pretty slowly, and you were getting worried as you sat in the dark, locked car. Flashlightsstarted to shine around the parking lot and before you knew it, there you sawyour idiot boyfriend, Stu, running for his life with a huge, bright yellow llama. You unlocked the car, grabbing it from his hands and shoving it in thebackseat, the two of you laughing wildly as the car sped off, leaving the copspissed. Once you got home, Stu carried you and all of your stuffed babies into yourhouse, and you cuddled, falling asleep.

Mantas and dolphins and whales, oh my!
Tumblr media
Today I start my adventure on the big island!  The Big Island is probably most known for its active volcanoes and the recent eruption of Mount Kiluaea in 2018.  Because of the tectonic plates on earth, the Hawaiian island are actually moving Northwest over over a “hot spot” of volcanic activity.  Over 5 million years ago this hot spot formed the oldest of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai (at the north of the chain).  As the islands shift north, the volcanic activity slows and eventually stops and the surface begins to erode, which is why Kauai is smaller than the southern most island.  The Big Island, which is the most “southernly” island, is the youngest (One million years old) and the most volcanically active, due to its proximity to the hot spot.  Currently, another Hawaiian island is formed under the Pacific called Loini and if any of us live to be 10,000, we might be able to visit it.
I flew into Kona on Wednesday evening.  I am in love with the Kona airport.  If I thought the Kahului airport was “open air” then this airport is basically outside.  It is completely open air, with some roofage.  So amazing.

I very excitingly went to pick up my rental car, so no more bus adventures for me.  I forgot how luxurioius and freeing it is have a car.  I never did it in Australia because I was scared t drive on the wrong side, but not a problem here.  It’s also such a life upgrade to have a car that DOES NOT have a tape player.  Modern technology is awesome.  Thanks Kia Rio!
Ok, anyway, I checked into my hostel, aptly names “My Hawaii Hostel.”  If I thought the last one was halfway decent, then I will need to severely downgrade it compared to this one.  This hostel had furniture other than a bed, decorations on the walls, a rug and multiple pillows and blankets.  I know that sounds like a given in a hotel room, but not in a hostel.  Absolutely dreamy!  The hostel itself is absolutely charming with a little garden and an open aiir living room and lots of outdoor seating, just a few minutes walk from the beach.  I am living my best Hawaiian life, for real this time!

Thursday morning I headed off for the next phase of the ocean part of my trip.  I signed up for a morning “Ocean encounters” tour and a Night “Manta Ray Swim” trip.
Note: You are going to be disappointed again by the lack of photos, because I bought an underwater disposable camera for the trip, but some of you may remember, that you have to get those photos developed.  (I actually am unsure of how I’m going to do that in this modern age, but that is a future me problem.  Anyway, the tour company promises to post some photos in the next few days, so there will be another update post once I have those.  But keep reading, it still is exciting and there is a sweet video I took that you should see!)
The morning snorkeling tour started out with swimming with spinner dolphins!! So, wild dolphins are the best.  They are nocturnal, so we were visitng them during their daytime nap time.  Hilariously, while they are sleeping they still swim on the bottom in a big pack.  I have no idea how they do this.  How fascinating.  Anyway a few of them woke up and swam up ot the surface to say hi.  When we got into the water they headed down towards the bottom again.  It was amazing to snorkel right above big pods of dolphins.  There must have been at least 20 in some of the bigger pods and there were several pods around us.  Just as a few more of them were waking up and coming to the surface, our captain said we had to go.  I’ll be honest, I was pissed.  I had dreams of high-fiving a dolphin and Captain Taylor was ruining my dream.  But I’m glad he did, because what happened next was SOOO worth it!
Next we headed out to a site where whales had recently been spotted.  When we arrived, we discovered there were several large whales around and a BABY WHALE.  This whale was only about a month old and still absolutely gigantic.  The baby whale was splashing around in the water very close to us.  Just like a human toddler, it seemed to be having a blast splashing aorund, trying to breach (jump out of the water) and stick its head up.  It was still really floppy and uncoordinated in the water, which was absolutely adorable.  It was so funny to see a whale just playing around.  I don’t know how it had so much energy to do all that.
Eventually we saw the mam whale  pop up around the whale, apparently keeping her eye on it and maybe helping from below with its practice breaches.  While we were distracted by the baby whale someone yelled out that there was another whale further off that was breaching.  (Whales often will breach several time in a row, because they are communicating with other whales and trying to get their attention.)  I looked over just in time to see a huge whale breach completely out of the water.  It was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.  It was like it was happening in slow motion. It’s entire body was up in the air and it seemed like it just hung there until it crashed back into the ocean with a huge splash.  Just like on Animal Planet!  I thought I had really seen it all until we looked back over at the playing baby whale and realized Mama had surfaced on our side.
All of s sudden I see her huge humpback surface like it is facing us.  It is coming right for our boat.  Right in fron of us, she lifts her tail and dives right under the boat.  I was both incredible and a little scary!  Seeing her SO CLOSE to us, it is astonishing how huge they are.  Just her back was probably as tall as the deck of the boat and she was easily twice as long.  It was shocking to see her giant tail come out of the water right in front of us.  Despite my fear that she miht capsize the boat, the crew said that they are insanely spatially aware and can get within inches of a boat and not hit it.  They have sonar like bats.  When I say this was a bucket list activity, I would almost say this was better than what I imagined being on my bucket list.  Even the crew was freaking out and taking video and photos.  They said that never happens. I will remember that moment for as long as I live.  I do have a video of the encounter.  Honestly, it doesn’t do it justice, but you can kind of see what I’m talking about.  Watch here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/QTA9JieqQdEWPfag6
Now as if that wasn’t enough, we went to a third spot to find Manta Rays.   We made a quick pit stop at an amazing place along the coast known as the Grotto.  It’s the outlet to the sea for a large series of lava tubes that run miles underneath the island.  The waters were the most incredible aqua color and crystal clear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Grotto
To add to the incredible day, we ran into two huge manta rays (In case you are worried they are not sting rays...who killed the crocodile hunter.  They are harmless plankton eaters.  One of our guides said we found his favorite manta named Amanda Ray.  She is the friendliest and has one bent fin.  Both mantas were about 10 feet long.  They can actually grow to have a to 15 foot wingspan.  They are beautiful to watch.  We hoppped in the water and snorkeled with them.  They looked like they were flying on the bottom of the ocean, completely gracefully.  This was preview for that evening.
After the snorkel adventure I decided to head to the beach.  I’m not really a beach person, but figured I should do it once.  I went to what they call a dark gray sand beach, which is half white sand and half black volcanic sand.  How do gray and black sand beaches form?  Well, when the hot lava hits the cool water it basically explodes and shatters like glass, spewing small particles of lava rock, which eventually breakdown into small pebbles and sand like particles.  The beach was very rough, but beautiful.  Its incredible to see the lava rock solidify in the form it was when it flowed into the ocean.  Very surreal.

Lava rocks at Kahalu’u Beach
After lunch and beach chill, I headed back to the marina for the night manta swim.  For this one, they take you out onto big boogie board looking things with lights.  Here’s a photo I did not take, that demonstrates this:
Tumblr media
The lights on the bottom of the board attract plankton, which then attracts other fish and manta rays.  This was both an awesome and miserable experience.  The weather up to this point had been absolutely perfect.  *0m degrees and sunny everyday.  However, storms had come in that night and it was cold and raining.  The water was freezing, but the experience was still pretty great.  One of the coolest things that I didn't expect was that the lights also drew in tones of fish.  There were a bunch of fish that looked kind of like big sardines that swarmed around us in big schools, it was really interesting to be that close to so many fish.  The highlight of the trip was that a big manta swam right next to me and did a backflip to eat the plankton right under the board.  They have awesome white bellies and gills and huge gaping mouths.  Its really otherworldly.
After the manta show we headed back to the boat for the long and extremely rocky trip back to the marina.  I generally have a pretty good stomach for boat rides, but this was a rough one.  I had taken Dramamine earlier, just in case, and still feeling like I might lose my lunch.  It was close to a repeat of the Great Barrier Reef puke episode but disaster was avoided, thank goodness!
All in all, a dream of a day.  I am officially hooked on snorkeling and boating, in general.  Who knew I’d be such a water baby.  I spent most of my life avoiding getting my hair wet.
Next stop:  Farm tour day in Southern Kona.

List of My Favorite Things in The Lightning Thief Musical (as heard on audio)
Disclaimer: someone got me an audio of the show from 2017, so no, I have not seen the show. This is all gained from simple audio. Also this list used to be way longer like I have more awesome moments but I had to tone it own a lil’
First of all, Chris McCarrell started singing and i started cryiiing. This man lays so much emotion in Percy AND IT’S WHAT HE DESERVES
“Their father Kronos” “KROOONOOOOOSSSSS” (this happens two times btw it’s awesome)
Okay so on the cast album when Grover goes like “you’re not exactly...” and then Percy finishes it off with “normal” and Percy sounds angry and fed up. But then here he says it in a really sad and disappointed way and SOMEONE GIVE THIS BOY A HUG PLEAS
“we saw all this x-rated art. Museums are crazy” “the headmaster called me” “about the art?” (convo between Percy and Sally)
I love that James plays Chris’ step-father, uncle and best friend-turned-enemy and definitely more in one musical.
“If he was my kid-” “He’s not.” I stan Sally Jackson with all my heart ugh (convo between Gabe and Sally)
okay so i’m pretty sure that the last note in Strong is sung by both Sally and Percy on the cast album but not here and honestly??? it just shows that Sally realizes she can’t take care of Percy anymore and that he now has to do it alone; be strong on his own and i just made myself cry
“Hey look a goat! Hey little guy - GROVER????” (also this means that at some point Percy can only see his legs which makes me wonder what position Grover is in)
“is a Fury after Percy right now?” “Oh no no no (as in don’t worry no)” “oh thank god” “IT’S A MINOTAUR” (convo between Sally and Grover)
THE CHAIRS CONSTANTLY BREAKING DURING ANOTHER TERRIBLE DAY
“Mr. D can be a bit- well, he hates children”
when grover comes to apologize to Percy for what happend he’s all talking himself down and being like “i’m the worst satyr in the world” and then Percy says “I’m so glad you are here” and i can only assume they hug at this point
“admit it, i’m the smartest person you know” “yeah, you’re also the toughest so i would admit it either way” “you think i’m tough?” (convo between Annabeth and Luke)
First of all, that above was Clarisse erasure but whatever
“are you ever going to wear pants ever again?” “nope” (convo between Percy and Grover)
okay so hearing this without seeing it makes it kinda confusing at most times but at some point percy makes light saber noises???? so like??? i assume he’s holding a sword and thinks that’s appropriate????
“YOU’RE MY DREAM GIRL” (as said by Percy Jackson)
“sexist much?” (said by Annabeth when Percy assumes only male gods can have children)
i’m very gay for kristin stokes and sarah beth pfeifer
“[clarisse] could have killed me” “the plan would have worked either way” (convo between Percy and Annabeth)
also PARALLEL; when realizing that Annabeth used Percy as a distraction he says “you set me up” which is like also literally what he says to luke so foreshadowing that Percy is going to get played
*everyone talking about how they hate their parents* “hi my name is percy and i love my mom” (i know it’s on the cast album but it’s too iconic not to mention)
“my dad is Poseidon? SUH-WEEEEET”
“Mr D wants to kill you - I MEAN TALK TO YOU”
“why is Zeus mad at me?” “Um you were born??” (convo between Percy and mr. D)
*Mr D talking about the lightning bolt* “and we’re not talking about some crowny tin foil zig zag from some off-broadway play”
“okay so what happens now?” *amidst a coughing fit “dolphin”* (convo between Percy and Mr. D)(also mr d constantly wanting to turn Percy into a dolphin is everything)
“the underworld is in los angeles” “really? actually, I’m not surprised” (convo between Luke and Percy)
"he claimed me because he needs me? where was he when i got kicked out of school or we couldn’t pay our rent???”  aaahhhh yesss angsty percy i love him
“you’re expelling me. Again.” (aka MORE ANGST)
also i know he climbs the scaffolding during good kid so i need a video of that someone come through
Act II has barely started and they’re already being attacked which I think accurately describes Percy’s life
How is Percy the only one who thinks that maybe getting your picture taken by a strange woman in a garden full of human statues is a little sketchy?
also these 3 are idiots. how did they not die in the first book
“Your mother and I are old nemesisss... nemesisssss... WE DONT LIKE EACH OTHER”
*in the most dry tone ever* “ow. my head.” (said by Medusa)
“Just tell her it wasn’t your  fault.” “You’re right, it’s yours”
“Medusa used to be beautiful until... *mumbling*” “until?” “until her mom turned her into a monster! *laughing* .... oh look, a bunch of empty boxes!!!” (Annabeth - Percy - Grover)
“you don’t even know how to hold a sword.” “yes i do - wait *presumably fumbles with sword* *very smug* yesss, I do.” (convo between Annabeth and Percy)
Tree on the Hill has NO BUSINESS being like that
“are we sure we’re ready to do this?” “not at all. let’s go.”
“we drowned. in a bathtub.” “all three of us.”
“guys... i think this pit... is Tartarus?” “LIKE THE FISH SAUCE????” (convo between Annabeth and Percy)
“why would Kronos want my shoes?” “they were really cool shoes” (convo between Grover and Percy)
“there is no way in HELL... sorry” (said by the sass master Percy)
“[Your father] doesn’t care about family. Or his brother, who he never visits. He’s too busy playing with mermaids and dolphins and thinking he’s soooo cool in his Hawaiian shirt.” Damn Hades, chill with the salt already
“Does [gabe] have some magic power or something?” “you could say that. his smell.” (convo between Percy and Poseidon)
“have you ever heard of Hercules and the Augean stables? That guy smells worse.” (said by Poseidon)
*very touching speech from Father Poseidon to his beloved son* “still, I am sorry you were born.”
“as our official protector you can escort is back to camp.” “and you’re conscious this time!!!!” (convo between Percy and Grover)
“you met my dad? ... Did he mention me?” (said by Clarisse)
good kid reprise is giving me all the feels and i am crying bye.
also can we appreciate the strength it must have taken Annabeth to turn her back on Luke???? Like here’s this guy who’s been protecting her since forever, who literally was a hero to her because without him she wouldn’t have been alive. She probably idolized him, and she definitely loved him (as a brother or silly crush). But still she turns her back on him. That is strength.
And those were a few of my favorite things so you can probably guess how much i love this musical.

friends to lovers!au mark lee
Tumblr media
gif credit
i was inspired bc my sister recently confessed to her best friend and the way she did it was hella cute soo....
when you first entered high school you didn't know anybody since you just moved in town
nd it was rlly hard trying to adapt since you were a new kid + u were socially awkward
on ur first day of school u sat down in ur seat in English nervous as hell bc there are so many... unfamiliar faces.... hELP
and next to u is your seat partner who is this guy who has brown hair and is wearing a pink sweater nd ur like .... ok u can do this u can make conversation with him
but then the teacher interrupts and ur like WeLP THERE GOES MY SOCIAL LIFE AND MY CHANCES OF MAKING FRIENDS :)))))))))))))))
ur teacher basically just talks about the syllabus and other boring stuff nd honestly his voice is so monotone that u just feel like napping
nd u notice that the guy next to you is also trying hella hard not to sleep and you smile to yourself at how his head cutely falls down as he's dozing off but then he immediately wakes up nd pretends like nothing happened
your teacher just keeps on talking and at one point he's like "i hope nobody's fallen asleep yet! :D" jokingly
and under your breath you're like "... we're literally all about to pass out"
you expect nobody to notice but then u hear the boy next to you let out a small laugh nd u look over and ohmygod he looks so cute whenever his face scrunches up from smiling!!
when the bell rings you're about to get up and the boy suddenly approaches u and is like "hi... i'm mark... i'm from canada"
nd you just laugh and go "hi mark from canada i'm (y/n) from ___" nd then he gets rlly embarrassed bC WHY DID HE SAY THAT
but its ok bc u thought it was cute
nd from then on he introduces you to his friend group which is just filled with a bunch of crackheads honestly
u join their squad and for the next highschool years you basically become best friends with all of them
but mark... he becomes your #1 bff immediately
you're both awkward & dorky so when u two are laughing to eachother about some dog meme on Instagram haechan and jisung judge you two so hard
you two like to go on adventures together in town like maybe riding bicycles to a park OR going into costume shops just to have fun trying on wigs
during English the teacher probably hates you two bc instead of focusing on how to write an analytical essay u and mark are listening to music while playing endless rounds of tic tac toe
anyways the whole school year passes nd now u two are sophomores
a lot of people gossip about u two and speculate when u two are gonna start dating but ????? you don't see mark that way and ur 2971301% sure he doesn't see you that way either
in fact u two like to make a lot of dating jokes and pretend to be a youthful, happy couple so y'all can get free things from cashiers who can't resist your adorableness
yet sometimes.... u wonder what it would be like to actually date him but u convince urself that a) mark doesn't like you THAT way and b) being best friends is just as good
jeno is your #2 best friend because he's actually the most normal one in your squad + he's actually rlly compassionate and reasonable like DAMN husband material
nd u tell jeno that u always wonder what it would be like... to have mark has ur boyfriend and he'd be like Well not much would change right?
whenever ur away from mark u two are either facetiming or texting
whether it's just sending eachother funny memes or tagging eachother in videos of cute animals ... u never go a day without interacting
one day he suddenly doesn't reply to any of your texts or calls and you're ??? ok mayb he's just busy bc he does play basketball a lot with the boys
but then..... u start getting worried so u ask ur groupchat where he's been
you: has anyone seen mark? he's not responding to any of my messages
dream groupchat~
bitch #1 (renjun): why ???? r u worried about him ;)
bitch #2 (haechan): OOooOoOo bc u care about ur Boyfriend?!!
bitch #3 (jisung): omg i'm blushing u 2 are so cute uwu
you: omg shut up i hate you three
jeno<3: i heard he's at the hospital
nana<3: yea he injured his foot
dolphin: yah not to be a snitch BUT he told us not to tell you
you: wait what?!
you rush to the nearest hospital on ur bicycle and when you find mark just chilling on a hospital bed with a cast on his foot u almost pass out
nd he's rlly surprised at first but when he sees tears stream down ur face he immediately feels like the worst guy on Earth
he has to hug you nd tell you 194820 times that he's OK and that he's sorry for not telling u abt the injury
when u find out that some guy ran over his foot with a skateboard u immediately find the guy at school and almost kick him but the whole squad holds u back
at school chenle privately tells u that mark didn't want to tell u abt the injury bc he didn't want you to worry about him but ??? that's BS!!
chenle tries to imply that mark cares about u in a Special way but u completely miss it
in fact, the rest of the dream squad always talks about u two behind your backs and are like "when tf r they gonna realize their feelings"
even tho haechan wants to just leave you guys in a room to talk about it the rational ones (aka Jeno & RenJun) are like "no just let them figure out on their own"
junior year starts!! and u feel...... different
everyone around you starts to date and you wish you could too
some ppl have asked u out before but u kindly rejected them all.... but why?? why don't u have feelings for them?? they're cute and probably ur ideal type yet u still don't want them
nd whenever all ur frieds are in relationships u feel left out
Jaemin tells u that u don't need to date to "fit in" but you don't understand why u're not attracted to anyone
so imagine how ... lost ... you feel when mark starts dating someone
he's mentioned this girl a couple of times before and how she's pretty nd u would always agree and encourage him to make a move
but it's all too sudden and unexpected when he texts you about it
chat with mark-
morkypoo: (y/n) i'm dating her
you: who? that girl you mentioned a few times?
morkypoo: yea
morkypoo: you're not mad right?
you: no! i'm happy for you! why would i be mad
morkypoo: idk
and you WERE happy for him!! but u kinda just relied on him to stay single forever with you so y'all can make fun of the other dream boys when they date
besides that.... you sort of feel.... jealous?!
so ur on a phone call with jeno panicking and ranting abt how you're so confused!!!
and jeno just calmly listens and is like "okay let's see here... why would you be jealous?"
nd u would be like "because i want him to be my best friend and i don't want him to ditch me for someone else i guess!!!"
"any other reason??"
and you would think hard about it and suddenly
oh shit
you like mark.
in your panic you hang up on jeno and throw your phone somewhere
and your heart.... aches.
like there's this sharp pain around it and wow. This sucks.
the tall boy from Canada whose face scrunches up whenever he laughs, the boy who you share blankets with during movies, the boy who you have as your lockscreen is actually ... your first love...
so in order to forget your pain you try to deny it
its normal for friends to sometimes feel attraction right??? it's okay for you to think about kissing your friend right???
without even realizing it, you start distancing yourself from mark in an attempt to figure out your feelings
mark is confused about why you stopped tagging him in Canada memes and why you always go to sleep earlier nd can't call him anymore
during school you two still talk a lot ofc but whenever mark's gf comes around to kiss or hug him you immediately turn around and leave
the dream squad watches this happen for a month before they finally decide to deal with this shit themselves
haechan: ok squad our lovely couple is falling apart we need to save them
renjun: haechan we aren't going to lock them in a room!!
jeno: well (y/n) is sad about mark dating someone else
jisung: that idiot... why'd he have to date that girl
jaemin: idk bc we all know he doesn't really like her
chenle: ur right she's annoying af
haechan: i watched them talk before... the conversation was STALE
and as the boys try to figure out a plan, you lay on your bed contemplating everything with your heart feeling stuffy
junior year ends and summer starts
but now, you're certain of your feelings
mark offers you to get ice cream at night and you agree
when you both arrive at the ice cream store you realize how much you loved just spending time with mark
and how you would die if your friendship fell apart bc of your stupid feelings
after you two are done, you say your goodnights and you enter your car with a clouded mind
and you sit in your car, not even budging, just thinking
before u know it, you grab your phone and you dial mark's number
he answers after the first ring and is like "(y/n) what's up?"
"i know this is really embarrassing and i'm probably going to regret saying this but... i think i like you. no. i like you, mark."
the line goes silent and you can tell he's shocked
after seconds you hear him go, ".... oh okay." nd you scramble to hang up the call, thinking you messed everything up
he sounded really surprised and you start beating yourself up over it
when you drive home, you get a text response from mark that says
morkypoo: i think i like you too
morkypoo: no, i like you.
after your confession it seems like things are back to normal except now you cuddle closer to him and hold hands with him a LOT
your favorite thing is to surprise him with pecks to his cheeks bc it gets him so freaking embarrasing and flustered!! and now he's scrambling for words bc u literally made him forget what he was about to say
u two decide not to tell the dream squad abt your relationship until a few days
but ofc the plan goes wrong bc suddenly as u two are watching Netflix while sharing popcorn mark gets a call from haechan
nd mark is ? and answers it
AND haechan is like "hey mark let's meet at the library tomorrow at 2:00pm"
mark, suspiciously: u never go to the library...
haechan: uHHHHH i want to read books ok bye see you there!!!
then he just hangs up and mark is is hella confused and you're just staring at him with the same ? expression
not even a second later your phone starts ringing and guess who it is. yup, haechan.
haechan: let's meet at the library tomorrow at 2:10 pm! oh yeah and don't tell mark!! ok bye!
after discussing it with mark, you 2 come to the agreement to just play along with whatever game haechan was pulling
and once you arrive at the library you're immediately pushed into a study room by haechan and he's like"TALK OUT YOUR FEELIINGS" then locks the door
hmm and guess who else is in that room? mark.
u 2 look at eachother then start laughing bC HAECHAN WAS TRYING TO set you guys together but y'all were one step ahead
to surprise haechan (who was trying to pretend like he wasn't spying on you two from the door's window), you kiss mark on the cheek
the door bursts open and haechan is like ???WTF that fast???wow i'm good at this-
you: no we were already together
haechan:
haechan, pulling out his phone: i'm telling the squad that you two are fake friends for not telling us this earlier
