Hi again! I couldn’t stop thinking about Taka being in a Les Misrables play in college and I just gotta know how it went! I wonder if he had bonded with his fellow club members during practice to the point where they crack inside jokes together and laugh along with each other over a blooper they found funny during practice. Maybe once the show is over, they all get emotional over the club members being in their final term of college (since it would be their last show). I remember back when I was in my high school drama club, we would all go out to dinner the weekend after the showtimes to celebrate. Maybe Taka and the rest of the club could do something like that! (Taka would invite Leon of course. And maybe Kaede, Maki and Kirumi if they went to his college lol).

Oh hell yeah! Les Mis would have been his final Uni performance for sure! As big as Hope's Peak was, I don't think they'd have enough students (what with the canon reserve course being...well...not that important lets say...). And ya gotta have a lot of people for Les Mis!

I'm not sure many of his Hope's Peak friends (emphasis on friends) would have gone to the same Uni as him - apart from Leon obviously. But I said in a previous post that Mondo's around, so he would definitely go.

Anyway! Enough procrastinating! Let's get writing! Slipped in some jealousy too so hope you don't mind? Thank you as always for the ask and I hope you enjoy!

• Seeing as he enjoyed the theatre club in Hope's Peak, Taka naturally gets involved in something similar in Uni.

• Leon is hoping to join too, seeing as he got involved in one of the final shows back at school, but baseball practice falls on the same days and so he just can't make it.

• That's not to say he doesn't go to see every show - both the opening night and the closing night without fail.

• And boy, does Taka still shine.

• He doesn't always get big roles now, which suits him just fine seeing as the clubs put on shows much more regularly with the amount of students involved.

• But he still manages to bag a few decent roles - Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and Dr Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror Picture show being Leon's particular favourites (for totally different reasons...)

• But Taka's crowning moment was also to be his final stage performance.

• Javert in Les Mis.

• He'd been listening to Stars ever since starting on the stage and told himself that Javery would be the last character he ever played.

• And of course, he was instantly cast in the role.

• He put his absolute EVERYTHING into it, making sure to go out with a bang.

• Each of the five performances went incredibly and on his final night, while taking a bow, he couldn't help but cry.

• He's built such great bonds with this group. And although they still have two more shows, he knows its the end for him.

• The club is all super emotional when he tells them backstage and immediately insist on sending him off with a bang.

• Leon and Mondo, who are waiting for him, are invited along - even though they know practically no one there.

• And oh boy, is it weird.

• Its not that they're annoyed at how popular Taka is with this group of people.

• On the contrary - its lovely to see the boy finally enjoying life outside of their company.

• But there's SO MANY in jokes - stuff they'll never find as funny as everyone else.

• No matter how hard Taka tries to explain it to them when he gets two seconds to speak to them.

• Mondo's just glad he has Leon there to talk to and so's pretty chill with the whole thing.

• Leon, though, is suffering with his irrational jealousy again.

• Of course he wants Taka to succeed and have friends and be happy. Of COURSE he wants that.

• But he can't help but worry about the girl Taka had to kiss on stage when he was J.D in Heathers the Musical.

• She's practically fawning over him and she's batting her lashes at him and he KEEPS PICTURING THAT SCENE and Leon just...just...

• He needs to just calm himself down and let Taka enjoy his moment.

• He needs to stop being so damn hypocritical about stage kissing.

• It's acting! Pretend! Make believe!

• It's not like Taka CHEATED on him.

• And hey, Taka is ENTITLED to stage kiss. God knows Leon's kissed plenty of people in the past. It isn't like Leon's ANNOYED and JEALOUS that he isn't Taka's only kiss anymore...

• Ugh. He needs air.

• He excuses himself and Mondo and they head out, Mondo lighting up and Leon DESPERATELY wanting to.

• Mondo knows better than to bother him so they stand in silence.

• Until Taka comes out, and Mondo slips back inside.

• 'You okay?'

• 'Yeah, I'm fine.'

• Lies. Sweet sweet lies. And Taka knows it.

• And eventually Leon slips and says he'd better go back because...

• 'SHE'LL be waiting?'

• 'Who?'

• 'The girl that's been all over you all night.'

• Ah. Okay, now Taka gets it.

• Leon's jealous of his co-star. The one he had to kiss. And ironically, he has no idea that he's jealous of a lesbian.

• He smiles and takes Leon's hands, pulling him in close.

• 'You know one of our favourite in jokes?'

• 'Hmm.'

• 'Whenever we had to practice our...scene...we both took ages getting into that moment. You know how we did it?'

• 'No.'

• 'We both had to pretend the other was our partner. Yui pictured Niko. And I pictured you.'

• Ahhh damn it. Leon KNEW he was overreacting.

• 'Sorry.'

• 'Don't be. But don't ever forget...offstage, I'm all yours.'

• After that, the party is much more enjoyable!

Do you have any sexuality headcannons for Tales characters in the games you played?

Oh boy, I do! Let’s see, I have to dig around my brain for them...

Symphonia:

-I’m actually pretty content with these characters. Or at least, I haven’t thought too hard about them. Their relationships in the game are very straightforward and solid to me. I do have a bunch of headcanons that don’t have to do with sexuality, though, which you can find here!

Vesperia:

-Yuri is Bi, mainly because while I do ship him with Flynn I also wouldn’t mind if Flynn and Yuri were just really good friends. He’s pretty cute with Estelle, too. But! I also like to play with the idea of Yuri being Trans.

-Flynn is Bi! For the same reasons, mostly.

-Estelle is Pan! I’m pretty sure she would accept anyone as they were. She’s very headstrong and loves all kinds of people. So I feel this is very fitting.

-Rita is def a lesbian

-Judith is Aro! Because I can’t really see her being with someone, I feel like she cares more about familial and friendship bonds than romantic ones.

Abyss:

-I want to say Luke is ace, but he’s also like 7 so

-Jade is for sure dating Peony, but it’s a side thing because Peony is still emperor and there has to be a successor and all that jazz. But those two are definitely gay.

-Ion is gender fluid! I catch myself using they/them pronouns a lot with Ion

Graces:

-Asbel is still a suppressed gay who has convinced himself he’s straight

-Sophie is Aro/Ace

-Richard is gay, in love with Asbel, but values Asbel’s happiness more than his so he stays quiet about it.

-I’ll probably get flack for this, but I see Pascal as Aro! I just canNOT accept that her and Hubert are technically canon. No. Can’t see it. Feels forced.

Xillia:

-Jude is trans, but I’m also fine to leave him as a dude who just isn’t very masculine/doesn’t have many masculine interests.

-Milla is Pan! Also uses She/They pronouns!

-Leia is Bi, you can’t tell me otherwise

-Julius is totally gay

Zestiria:

-Sorey is Ace! And gay

-Mikleo is also gay, these two are just so nice for each other.

-Alisha is Bi! I like to think she started to have feelings for Sorey, but once she saw Mikleo with him she decided to respect that relationship.

-Rose is total Lesbian

-Edna is Aro/Ace!

Berseria:

-Velvet is Aro! As much as I love all the ships, I feel overall she wouldn’t have an interest. But her friend Niko was definitely trying to flirt with her and catch her attention.

-Magilou is Pan!

-Eleanor is a closeted Bi

And that’s pretty much it! I hope it suffices, they are just my own head canons. There’s quite a few Aro ones which is probably just me reflecting myself onto them.

Random story idea, I wanna make something with this. Please note it's nothing krbk related and it's a lesbian love story.

Don't Tell My Mother.

Niko (the main character) has an awkward relationship with her mother. Her mother talks about potential boys for her daughter. Niko wants to fall in love with a girl. That's when she meets Hikari (love interest). They hang out and paint. Listen to music and sleep in. Niko's mother classes them as really good friends. They have a secret. They start dating after confessing to one another. They tell Hikari's parents who seem to be very accepting of it. They don't tell Niko's mother because their scared of what she'll think. So they hide if from her. Until they get caught..

Sword Dance by A.J. Demas

Series: Sword Dance, #1 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5

The quote: I think this masculine-feminine thing isn’t just because I’m a eunuch. I think I would have been like this—sort of wanting to be both—even if I’d grown up as a whole man. But I might not have known what to do with it. — Varazda

I did not know what to expect when I read this. I did decide to read it because of the nb angle and likely the enemies to lovers concept. But it was a beautiful story with well-written characters and just a beautiful relationship. The plot reveals itself in a timely fashion while there perhaps some elements of slight predictability to it. The beats are familiar even if the people hitting them are not, if that makes sense. But that said it isn't about the plot for me so much, it's about the characters. On the setting, it's only in the afterword that A.J. Demas confirms the setting for the novel. “set in a fictional world loosely based on the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean”. Pseuchaia feels a bit like it could be Greece, Zash/Sasia could Turkey in that case. Look I like geography even fictional geography. I figured it was in a Mediterranean setting quite early but it was nice to have hat confirmed.

On the characters, it is quite a substantial cast but it is largely focused on the main characters Varazda and Damiskos. Varazda (formerly Varazda son of Nahaz son of Aroz of the clan Kamun) is called Pharastes by everyone other than Damiskos. They mean the same thing, warrior, but most people in Pseuchaia can't pronounce Varazda so he goes by Pharastes. Varazda is a eunuch, a former slave and a highly talented sword dancer. His being free is a rarity and he lives in a super cute found family with two other freed slaves and a precious little girl (all of whom I believe readers meet in Saffron Alley). There is no sexual relationship between Varazda, Yazata and Tash. Varazda is nonbinary but is always referred to by masculine pronouns, importantly his nb-ness has nothing to do with his eunuch-ness. I adore Varazda he is so well written. He is unexpectedly complex for a story of this size. Because of his past he has major trust and intimacy issues, he doesn't have an interest in sex now after years of sexual assault. But Damiskos just works for him. Its a combination of factors mostly acceptance and willingness to come to his level ie speaking Zash. “Aristokles’s slave was lovely in a way that seemed somehow basic and elemental, as if he were really neither male nor female, but a being of his own unique nature with a beauty that had no relation to either”. Varazda is stunningly attractive a wonderful blend of masculine and feminine. The way he is written is intelligent. He flows between masculine and feminine contextually, his movements are usually almost catlike which is quite appealing for a dancer.

Damiskos Temnon is the narrator. A former soldier he is lame (as in crippled) due to something in his past but as a soldier, he was an elite soldier. He is not what he appears. He's severed in Zash and has some understanding of where Varazda is coming from. The breakup of his engagement in Zash is closely tied to Varazda. It is worth saying that Damiskos is a man of principle and a master strategist. It's an interesting combination in a single man (something Varazda finds intoxicating). “I don’t know if you’ve worked this out, First Spear,” came Varazda’s muffled voice, “but I fancy soldiers.” I'm going to be honest the dynamic between Varazda and Damiskos is enjoyable to read and so well written. Their intimacy is unexpected and fully triggered by laying out of the truths. Varazda wants to explore the sexual attraction he so rarely feels. Damiskos is just revelling in the uniqueness of Varazda. Their flirtation is so much fun.

The supporting cast is broad and largely female. This is definitely aimed at women, the leading men are endearing and in love the women are strong and sure. Their strength comes from loyalty and love for each other and family. Nione Kukara is a badass woman who did well in her prior role and is now making her way in the world. I think she likes people to underestimate her. Her long-running friendship with Damiskos is part of the set up for the story and honestly to be admired. They have been friends for over 15 years, both of them in roles where that would be unusual (well with someone of the opposite sex at least). Niko is something of the comedic relief, a child slave in Nione's household. He's a piece of levity as the plot grows dark. The old men are just stupid in that way that you want to facepalm over their actions.

Sword Dance ends at the right place. It allows for Saffron Alley to fit right in but if a reader wanted to read only one book that would work too. I really like the writing style. It's almost visceral. "The kiss lingered on his senses like a vanished phrase of music, tantalizing and irrecoverable. The cool softness of Varazda’s lips; the tiny, fleeting brush of his fingertips along Damiskos’s jaw; the scent that he wore, citrus and something spicy, neither masculine nor feminine.", basically anytime Varazda's dance or fighting is written it is truly enchanting. A.J. Demas does a great job of getting the reader in the narrators head. The characters are beautiful and their coding is intelligent, no one is two dimensional. Sword Dance is wonderfully aware of some of the potential issues in play. Damiskos does think his attraction to Varazda could just a kink. Varazda knows the difference having experienced his identity being used. The potential distractions that their chemistry may cause in a fight, neither of them try to stop. Also, the whole concept of what is being written "the idea of catching Varazda when he dropped from a railing suggested midnight assignations and romantic fiction more than escape from a reconnaissance mission gone wrong". There is a deep appeal in Remi's existence and Varazda's whole family that is a fantastic use of the found family trope and Damiskos's acceptance of the situation no questions asked.

This is a book that plays with LGBTQ themes. There are multiple characters of varying identities, nonbinary, lesbian and I'm guessing bi or pan. I want to add a warning there is a not-insignificant amount of hate speech in Sword Dance. Some is directed at the eunuch main character, Varazda. The rest is directed at well almost everyone else in the world, the antagonists have a whole thing with ‘Phemian purity.’, racial purity. Both of these can be problematic for people but works well in context.

Everyone knows Haru's mom is barely home and he sucks at taking care of himself so they find all sorts of stupid excuses to stay over, which is also pretty much canon

Especially Hime though. She isn't slick, trying to spend all her free time with him but thankfully they are both very oblivious and think when the other says "i love you" they mean it as like, a friend

Self-Indulgent Legally Blonde the Musical AU Because I Can

Yes I’m doing this, and no you can’t stop me. This is specifically for Legally Blonde the Musical, not the movie. The characters in the musical are a little different from the movie, so my choices here may not be the same for the film. Also, my choices are all heavily affected by my personal Cats headcanons and ships. Basically, I’m very biased and these might not be the roles most people in the fandom would assign to these characters. Please assume all kitten characters are aged up for this au.

Elle Woods - Victoria

Enid Hoopes - Rumpleteazer

Emmett Forrest - Plato

-I don’t think I need to explain why Plato is Emmett, that’s pretty self-explanatory. Tori is Elle because the colors work and it just makes sense to me. Although, ngl Teazer could also make a good Elle since she’s a chaos child who probably wouldn’t give a flying fuck about law, but I think Tori suits the role better. Teazer is Enid because lesbian, and Enid is also implied to have a crush on Elle. A big change in this au is giving Enid a much more prominent role in the show. Why is this? Because I’m going to make Platoriateazer HAPPEN damn it.

-My idea here is that Teazer/Enid now comes from a similar background as Plato/Emmett, and the two of them bonded over this and became inseparable prior to coming to Harvard. They’re besties right off the bat when we get introduced to them. Teazer/Enid is now present for all of the bonding moments, like “Chip On My Shoulder” because she has a similar background as Plato/Emmett now. She’s there to help Tori study alongside Plato, and also gets transformed by Tori in “Take It Like a Man” (she gets a suit too because what else would Teazer wear?) and of course she’s there to provide comfort in “Legally Blonde.” Basically, her involvement and role in the show is almost identical to Plato’s/Emmett’s. At the end of the show both her and Plato get proposed to by Tori.

Callahan - Macavity

Warner Huntington III - Alonzo

Vivienne Kensington - Cassandra

-Macavity as Callahan is self-explanatory. However, I’m so sorry I made Alonzo Warner, I’m really doing him dirty here, but like, he makes the most sense for that role. You could argue that Tugger could be Warner, but on what planet would Tugger go to law school? Or get a “serious” girlfriend for that matter? I just can’t see it. And for the record, musical Warner is a lot less of an asshole than movie Warner, he actually gets redeemed a little bit, receives a happy ending, and remains friends with Elle after everything, well, they hug it out at least, which signals to me that they stayed friends. Do I even need to explain why Cass is Vivienne? That one’s also self-explanatory. Similar to Warner, Vivienne is less of an asshole in the musical than in the movie.

-Okay, I know Jennyanydots would make more sense for Paulette (in fact this could work really well with Bustopher as Kyle and Jenny as Paulette), but HEAR ME OUT, imagine Asparagus Jr. or Munk doing the bend and snap, you’re welcome. For real though, the reason I made it like this is because I’m not fond of the Skimbledots or Jennypher ships, I just don’t like them personally, and I did say I was going to be biased in this. Skimble is Kyle because Kyle is the package delivery guy, and Skimble runs the midnight mail train, they both deliver mail therefore they are the same character. Also, if we’re taking into account 2019 Skimble, who is definitely Kyle materiel, then I don’t think I need to explain myself further. Bomba as Brooke is self-explanatory. I didn’t have the heart to make any canon characters Chutney, so I’m using expendable, vague Admetus, female version probably.

Kate (Delta Nu girl) - Jemima/Sillabub

Margot (Delta Nu girl) - Etcetera

Pilar (Delta Nu girl) - Electra

Serena (Delta Nu girl) - Tantomile

-Jemima/Sillabub is Kate because I can see her being the one who helps Tori study. Etcetera as Margot is self-explanatory. Electra as Pilar and Tantomile as Serena don’t really have any reasoning behind them, I just knew I needed to make then Delta Nu girls in some way.

Aaron Schultz - Coricopat

Elle’s father (uncle in this scenario, we’re cutting the mother character) - Bustopher Jones

Beer Bash guy (the one who sings “whatchya want, you wanna be”) - Mungojerrie without a SHADOW of a doubt.

-Cori would definitely be a law student, so he’s here as Aaron. I wanted to get Demeter in here somehow so I made her the court judge, because she would be a court judge. Bustopher as Elle’s uncle/father character is self-explanatory. Jerrie as the beer bash guy? Very self-explanatory. I don’t have anyone down for Dewey because I already used my evil character (Macavity) and I already used my expendable character (Admetus) sooooooo, I mean Dewey is only in one scene anyway so he can be some generic character maybe.

Nikos - Rum Tum Tugger (yes this is going based off that amv, sue me) GAY OR EUROPEAN?

Carlos - Mr. Mistoffelees (also from that amv) GAY ANNNNNNND EUROPEAN.

For generic roles (like the people at the beer bash or the people at the salon) - Pouncival, Tumblebrutus, George, Jellylorum, and Grizabella.

Unfortunately I couldn’t manage to get Old Deut or Gus in here, one of them could have been the court judge but I really wanted Demeter in this. They could probably be in generic roles, maybe hang out at the salon, or be generic professors at Harvard idk.

He can do basic magic, he can light himself on fire in a blue magic flame before it spreads around himself. telepathy, teleportation, and "invisibility" (that's more lore stuff) not really a power but he can control his appearance (his was born with baby blue skin and light purple hair but his mother taught him to hide that side to blend in with humans) he has a ribbon spell that he can call them to wrap his wrists and his controls them (i.e pulling and wrapping up his targets) he has another spell that does the same thing called flower power (this with rose vines) that he uses to hurt someone if need be. okay this is getting too long but he has more.

Why Someone Might Love Them: He is such a sweet kid and lights up the rooms he is in. you can't help but love him.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: Red can be a little troublemaker and cause chaos for fun. which gets annoying when shit goes down.

How They Change: Red always thought he was just a weapon, a tool for a war that was never coming. as he grows up and lives on his own with Angel, he changes to be someone full of love for not just others, but himself.

Phobias: the water. just- the water.

Famous For: bringing the dead back to life with ease.

Arrested For: Killing witches who mess with Red.

OC Shipped: I ship her with Niko, two crazy girls who just want bodies.

OC Murder: Iris again, or Lexi (not doing her, she isn't too important rn)

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: she doesn't watch movies that often because she is ya know.. trapped. but when Red can watch something other than kids movies, Angel finds herself loving romance movies, hasn't picked a favorite yet. Books though? cook books! she enjoys learning about food even though she can't eat.

Least Favorite: Horror, just like Red. or anything with water. nothing against mermaids or wildlife, but she's seen enough of the sea for 10 lifetimes at least. Cliche would be evil necromancers, screw that.

Talents: Her painting are to die for. powers??? now this is going to be fun. Angel can bring back the dead, use her magic to move things and grab people. over the course of her time trapped, she has learned how to possess whomever wears her, which leads to some fun beat downs with both Red and Angel working as a single unit. oh did i mention Angel really loves to mess around with blood magic? she was the only one who was able to master it before the witches attacked.

Love Them: Someone would love her becauss how passionate and nurturing she is. also because she enjoys cracking jokes in the safety of the clockwork during the WORST of times.

Hate Them: the witches hated her for her powers and that she was "sick" in the head for enjoying blood magic.

what’s your favourite character from 1?

ATLA is one of those magical shows where I love/like most of the characters. But my fave (to the surprise of no one probably lol) is Zuko. His character and story has been making me over-emotional since 2005.

who’s your least favourite character in 2? Other than the random awful men that got killed off fast, it has to be Niko. I find him boring and unnecessary at this point. I'm an unapologetic misandrist and heterophobe *bows*

Hmmm....tbh I always find it difficult to choose a #1 favorite episode of Shameless. The Mickey stan in me wants to just say "Emily" (and I do love that episode) but there are a lot of early episodes that I love for other reasons. So I'm not sure.

Tbh it's been such a long time since I watched Buffy that the seasons kind of blur together for me lol. But I THINK I remember really loving S3.

Mel has a cold and Niko buys half the pharmacy, is always a hair’s breath away from calling 911, but when Mel can convince her to calm down, she’ll stay lounging on the couch with her all day.

15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote?

They can’t watch cop dramas together (Niko hates them) but they do like a solid fantasy genre film. Mel has last say because Niko couldn’t possibly deny her anyway 😌

21. Where do they get nervous about going with one another?

The police station—not exactly the best environment for an interracial lesbian couple. After Niko’s “retirement” from the force, they get nervous about going to that coffee shop where Mel used her powers. It’s like every time they plan something there, something big happens in their lives

23. Where is their favourite place to be together?

On the couch in Vera-Vaughn manor, cuddled under a knitted blanket watching Netflix with the sisters. Peaceful bliss.

26. Why do they need to have a serious chat?

They really need to tell Greta what happened, or a version of it that doesn’t leave Greta completely confused for the rest of her life. Twice, Niko did this to her!!

They’ve been through a lot, not just magically, and the universe just keeps gently nudging them together. I think Niko helps ground Mel to the world when she could otherwise get lost in her anger, and Mel helps Niko step out of her strict view of life and the rules of good and bad.

Chamrand’ded (2018-) Season 1

So, I’ve been familiar with the Charmed series, probably since the early 2000s. I’ve even read some of the comics which are set after the series finale of the TV show. It was a show that my mother enjoyed and I, and my younger sister wound up picking the fandom up, at least to a degree. I’ve probably watched the entirety of the original series’ eight season run at least six times, likely more. In terms of fandoms that I’m a part of, it’s among the earliest in my repertoire, alongside the likes of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!

Consequently, I was mildly skeptical of the reboot, but told myself that I’d watch it in its entirety out of respect for the original, no matter the quality. For the most part, I think the reboot is a mixed bag. There’s some things that it does that I like, and other choices that it makes that I really do not. The show tends to give off a feeling like the writing staff was constantly at war with itself for the duration of the season.

I’ll start off explaining the premise, and then I’ll dip into spoilers.

The show is set in 2010s US, specifically a college town in Michigan called Hilltowne. The show tends to utilize the local college as a hub for a lot of the episodes. This works decently well for the most part, but has a habit of tending to shrink the world instead of expanding it. Essentially the majority of stuff of import happens to revolve around this college.

This is a modern fantasy setting, with the main cast of three being revealed as the chosen “Charmed Ones” after their mother is killed under mysterious circumstances. They’re each granted magical powers and begin to study witchcraft, under the guidance of a guardian angel called a “whitelighter”.

The main characters are as follows:

Macy Vaughn- The oldest sister, an estranged half-sibling who is separated from the family and was raised by her father without knowledge of her mother. Upon learning of the death of the women she suspected to be her mother, she makes contact with her siblings. She’s a bit awkward, nerdy and headstrong. A lot of the time she stays more independent than her siblings. Her power is telekinesis. Of the cast, I think she’s one of the stronger performers and generally tends to have fairly strong plots.

Mel Vera- The middle sister, who despite living most of her life as the elder sibling, fits neatly into the role of the defiant middle child. An outspoken lesbian feminist with a tendency to make rash decisions. She’s the staunchest defender of personal lives away from magic in the group and tends to dislike authority. A lot of her personal plotlines tend to revolve around her romance interests with mixed effectiveness; despite this, I think her plots tend to have the most intrigue as a whole. She has the power to control time. I find her to be very derivative of Piper from the original series, without the same kind of character development that Piper had to reach the comparable mindset. She has a very genuine, close platonic relationship with the sister’s whitelighter, Harry, that develops quite organically over the course of the season, despite originally being openly hostile to him. I like this relationship a lot, despite Mel being my least favorite member of the main cast.

Maggie Vera- The youngest sister, an empath who tends to be the glue that holds the group together. She’s more bubbly and outgoing than her siblings and is a freshman in college, unsure about what she wants in life. She’s reminiscent of Phoebe from the original series, but isn’t nearly as derivative as Mel is in regards to Piper. She’s portrayed as generally capable and quite stable, yet naive. Her plots tend to revolve around a sorority at the college, and honestly they get old quite quickly as it’s quite apparent from the onset that she won’t officially join the Greek system. Her better plots tend to involve her “bad boy” significant other, Parker.

Harry Greenwood- The sister’s guardian angel, assigned by the powers that be to guide the sisters. A resurrected British man from the mid 1900s. He develops a genuine relationship with each of the sisters as a friend and confidant. He often plays the role of the comic relief and the all-knowing cast member. He winds up living in the sister’s house for the majority of the season. He’s honestly the most complicated member of the cast, despite being rather upstanding. He follows the rules, but personally isn’t infallible. He has baggage and relationships with characters in the world. Despite being sometimes played for comedy, he’s never portrayed as incompetent. I did a longer breakdown of the character in the middle of the season. His powers include, age resistance, teleportation, healing, memory manipulation, limited clairvoyance, limited illusions, limited telekinesis and self healing. My second favorite member of the cast.

Minor characters include:

Parker- Maggie’s half-demon “bad boy” boyfriend. Believed to be the host of the Source of All Evil. Actually does almost nothing wrong all season but is often discriminated against by much of the cast, both good and evil. Reminiscent of Cole from the original series.

Niko- One of Mel’s romance interests. A police officer who’s presence tends to cause a lot of issues tangential to magic. Reminiscent of Andy from the original series.

Jada- Another of Mel’s romance interests. The forbidden child of a witch and whitelighter pairing who’s affiliated with an organization called the Sarcana. A character who I quite like.

Galvin- Macy’s romance interest. A geneticist who works with her, has a family background associated with the occult.

Charity- An Elder with a history that includes Harry. Somewhat untrustworthy, but competent.

Alastair- A powerful demon who wants to bring about the apocalypse. Often portrayed as the main villain of the first season.

Spoilers from here on out.

Generally speaking the first season revolves around the sisters coming into their powers and forming a bond, particularly revolving around Macy’s relationship with her sisters. The main plot points revolve around the Sarcana coven and the assassination of Marisol Vera, the sister’s mother, Parker and the Source, and Harry and Charity’s involvement in the loss of Charity’s sister, Fiona, a powerful witch known as the Keeper of the Sacred Flame.

Generally speaking, the plot is at it’s most powerful, when pushing the third narrative, as it is the most distinctive and intriguing of the three main plots. It gets wrapped up in the second plot when Alastair needs the Sacred Flame as a pawn in order to evoke the Source of All Evil. The first plot is largely resolved in the first half of the season upon it being revealed that Charity was responsible for Marisol’s death. It begins to bleed into the third plot when the Sarcana saves Fiona from her banishment.

It is revealed that Maggie and Macy are full sisters, not half, and that Mel is the one with a different father. It is also revealed that Macy is the product of necromancy and has the potential to develop a demonic power called the evil sight at the cost of her humanity.

Parker’s full-demon brother, Hunter acts as a recurring villain over the course of the series. The brother’s father is Alastair, who also owns the lab that Macy works for.

The strengths:

The season really shines in its ability to keep things interconnected. Parker’s parents are affiliated with Macy’s work, Niko is investigating the Sarcana, the Sarcana save Fiona, Fiona is needed to summon the Source, etc.

Additionally the character interactions tend to be fairly strong. I really believe the interactions between the members of the main cast, particularly Harry and Macy’s.

The reality warping that changes the timeline in order to save Niko might not have been the easiest, or obvious solution, but it was the most interesting.

There’s an episode with Harry and Mel where they go to the UK that really cements their relationship. It’s incredibly sweet and really shows how much Harry means to the Veras and the degree to which they trust him. It ends strikingly bittersweet and is likely one of the most well-written episodes of the season.

The reveal that the Sacred Flame and the Source are ultimately the same force that seeks an ideal host is very well done.

The last two episodes of the season are extremely strong and subvert expectations, particularly the penultimate episode. Macy takes on the Source, kills Alastair, prevents the apocalypse and essentially becomes a god with the power to massively manipulate reality at will. Maggie and Mel have to rely on the bond they formed with Macy over the course of the entire season to get their sister out of the corrupting influence of absolute power.

The weaknesses:

The show has a bad habit of flip-flopping on character relationships. Harry and Charity are on and off, Mel and Niko and Jada have a back and forth relationship all season. Maggie’s pilot boyfriend is on and off. Maggie and Parker are on and off. Macy and Galvin are also on and off. I just kind of wish that the series would portray a stable relationship.

The powers of whitelighters are somewhat inconsistent. They manage to be stronger than their original series counterparts, but also weaker. Essentially it creates a situation where I wonder why the Elders don’t create an army of immortal whitelighters to support do-gooders. They make more righteous dead people every day after all.

The show has a bad habit of taking back decisions on an episode to episode basis. It’s bad enough where there are episodes where it feels like you miss an episode in-between despite watching episodes back to back. It really feels like writers conflicting over what they want on an episode-to-episode basis.

The sorority plot is stupid. I like Maggie well enough, but Lucy should have shown up consistently in the first half of the season and like twice afterward.

I feel like a lot of the “demon of the week” episodes were wasted airtime because of the pace that the series has been taking. The original series could do that in the first season because the build up to the source took almost two seasons and happened in the middle of the series. The reboot pushed the Source as the big narrative that the first season is trying to overcome. It needed every second of the airtime it had to properly build that up, and I feel like it squandered a lot of it. The finale could have been pretty incredible if they focused more on the lead up to that the entire season.

The Conclusion:

Charmed 2018 isn’t necessarily for fans of the original; it’s for people who watch the CW. There are some cute nods to the original series that you can tell were snuck in by clever writers.

Honestly, I find a lot of problems with it. The show is certainly a little more rough around the edges than the original series. Despite this, I enjoyed almost every episode. It nods to the original, but tries not to copy it and explore its own ideas that branch off from the concept.

I honestly think that if make an effort to take more risks in the second season and branch away from college setting, they can recapture some of the magic of the original.

It’s a seven out of ten from me, but it has potential, especially if they’re willing to commit in the same way that they did in the last few episodes. I’d be all too happy to see more.

=Chapter 2

The next day, Weiss braced herself as she walked past locker 134. But this time, nothing happened. The Dragons all looked at her, and Yang’s expression held a strange mixture of emotions. The others looked a little smug. Still, none of them said a word. The looks on their faces haunted her so badly that she barely noticed what she was doing, stumbling through her day.

“What’s the matter with you?”

Glancing up, she flashed a wan smile over at her friend. “Oh… nothing, Pyrrha; it’s fine. I just feel a little weird.”

“Weird in what way?” Studious as always, Pyrrha Nikos had already taken her notes from the board and was now happy to focus on her friend. What a sweet soul. There was a reason the two had been thick as thieves for so much of their lives.

“Well… I’ll tell you at lunch.”

So she did. It was hard to get through the rest of class, but she managed, completing her notes even if it took her twice as much effort to concentrate as usual. Then, once they had gained the relative quiet of the cafeteria, she unloaded all her woes onto her friend.

“She kissed you?!”

Face beet red as she tried to focus on her tray of underwhelming school food, Weiss whispered, “Keep your voice down! And… yes.”

“But that’s…” Glancing very briefly over at the table on the other side of the room, where the Dragons were holding court, the red-haired amazon whispered, “You’re both women!”

“Really, Pyrrha? Am I a woman? What gave that away?”

Frowning, Pyrrha looked back down to her tray. “I’m sorry. But I’m not sure what else to say.” After a pause, she added, “Did you like it?”

“I… I don’t know.”

“Really?!” At least she was keeping her voice down now. “Weiss, I thought you were going to tell me that it was disgusting, a-and that you wanted my help reporting her to the authorities!”

“Reporting her for what? Feeding me a cheeseburger and giving me a kiss?”

“Well, when you put it that way…”

The prissy platinum blonde deflated, all fire and vinegar leaving her. “It was nice. But it was also disgusting. Sorry I can’t describe it any better than that, because I really don’t have any other frame of reference. I’ve never been kissed by anyone before.”

“I’ve never been kissed by anyone still.” Scratching the back of her neck, she reached for her milk carton with her other hand. “But it really wasn’t bad? Kissing a woman? I mean, you said ‘disgusting’ but you also said ‘nice’, which sounds like… it wasn’t the worst thing you’ve ever experienced.”

“It wasn’t.” The two simple words took a lot more effort to get out than they should have.

“Wow…”

“H-hey, you know that I’m telling you this in confidence, right? Don’t go blabbing it around the whole school.”

Looking quite offended, Pyrrha urgently hissed, “I would never! You’re my best friend! Even if I don’t really know how to feel about… well, about this, that doesn’t mean I could-”

They were both interrupted by someone bumping into Weiss’s back as she walked past. It was one of the Dragons - a dark-skinned girl with vibrant green hair. She didn’t even glance back at them, but merely kept walking toward her comrades.

“Rude,” Weiss grumbled.

“Hey, what’s this?” Pyrrha asked as she bent to the floor. When she straightened back up, she had a folded sheet of notebook paper between her strong-but-dainty fingers.

“I don’t know, what is it?”

“She dropped it. Emerald, I mean.”

“That’s her name? Emerald?” But they were both too curious about the note to focus on the identity of the one who dropped it. There weren’t many words to read:

‘Princess. Same place same time. Or not.’

Weiss was reading it through again when Pyrrha whispered, “What does it mean? Do you think she… dropped it by you on purpose?”

“I don't know.” Sliding it into one of her books, she added, “But I suppose I'm going to find out.”

Weiss shivered in the slight breeze as she waited in the school parking lot. The weather wasn't turning to Autumn chill quite yet, but Summer was definitely over. Besides, her cheerleader skirt let more air in than it could have; she should start wearing tights underneath soon.

“There she is. Right on schedule.”

That wasn't Yang’s voice.

After a second of hesitation, she turned to see three of the Dragons bearing down on her. They were all wearing the standard black leather jackets, elegant art of an Asian-style dragon on the backs, but their outfits varied beyond that. Emerald was wearing jeans, a low-cut top that matched her hair and baby doll pumps. The Italian-looking girl had leather pants and a white tank top on, black boots that more suited the jacket. And the third…

Weiss found herself getting lost in the smoldering eyes. They were somehow hypnotic. Her simple red dress flared out around her knees, and the trim tapering legs disappeared into matching strappy heels - the open toes were a tiny bit scandalous in their conservative little town. In some ways, she looked far too delicate to be a Dragon… except for her fiery gaze was more fierce than even that of Yang herself.

“The Dragon sends her regards,” she purred in a silky voice.

“So the Dragon can't come see me herself? That's nice. I can tell she really cares about me when she sends her flunkies.”

The Italian girl scowled before snapping, “Hey, watch it, Pep Rally Princess. Yang can't always be available; she has responsibilities.”

“Then what was the point of this?”

“To test your interest level,” the fiery girl susurrated. Her hand reached out and nipped a strand of hair behind Weiss’s ear, prompting her to shiver before taking a step backward. “Heh… nervous little thing.”

Folding her arms over her chest, Weiss grumbled, “Thought you were supposed to back off if I let her try charming me once. That was the deal.”

“Have we bothered you all day?” Emerald insisted. “No. This is just checking in. And like Cinder said, we want to know if you would be open to more fun with Yang or not. But you showed up, so you must not be too mad about last night.”

“I'm not a homosexual.” When they all giggled, she snapped, “What? Why is that funny?!”

“So many girls have said that,” the one called Cinder laughed easily.

“Said that to Yang?”

Emerald offered with a little smirk, “To all of us.”

“Oh.” She took another little step backward, a hand raising to ward off sudden advances. “You're all lesbians? Like a… a group of delinquent deviants?”

The Dragons laughed. And instantly, it was back to the way things were before; an entire gang of girls laughing, making fun of her. Looking down on her as some kind of simpleton, a pleb who didn't understand the world as intimately as they did. Weiss wanted to disappear.

But then Cinder cackled, “I like the alliteration. And it's close enough to true that it might as well be.”

Maybe this time they weren't laughing at her. It helped relieve some of her fear, her shame. And her curiosity could take center stage again. “Really? You all… kiss women?” A nod from all three. “Why don't you just kiss each other, then?”

“Some of us have,” Emerald admitted - and she saw one of Cinder’s eyelids twitch, and the Italian girl’s hands went into her jacket pockets. “But mostly, we don't date inside the Dragons. We're all like sisters to each other, so it would be weird.”

“Oh. Well… I guess that makes sense. As much as any of this does.”

“And not all of us date only women. Coco is going steady with that boy Fox, even though she keeps Velvet on a short leash, too.”

Weiss looked over at the Italian girl, who shook her head with a slight smile. “No, I'm Blake. And I'm all about pussy.”

“You really are,” Cinder muttered, and the other two laughed.

The word “pussy” was still making Weiss blush, but she found her voice again. “O-okay, so… so you all like girls, and you all like me? Or what? I'm not really… sure why you…”

The three had turned to stare at her, and she was stuck by how intense their gazes could be when they let the full brunt of them fall on a single target.

“Someone thinks she's real cool cat,” Emerald snorted.

“Well, she is,” Cinder said in that low, silky tone of hers as she began to pace around Weiss, the latter turning to keep her in sight. “Those sweet cheeks, long, skinny legs… and it's so cold today. Really committed to showing her school spirit.” Her fingers flipped the very edge of Weiss’s skirt to illustrate.

“H-hey, it's not that cold! And I could say the same about you, with that dress!” When Cinder took a step toward her, she stepped back. “What are you doing?!”

“Testing.”

“Well, I have had enough tests for one lifeti-”

Her heart leapt into her throat in a way it hadn't done yet when she felt not one, but two bodies connecting with her back. A hand apiece from Blake and Emerald fell to her arms, not quite gripping tight but still boxing her in as Cinder stepped forward, completely taking over her field of vision.

“Smells good,” Blake observed, voice low and intimate in a way that sent shivers up Weiss's spine. “Jasmine?”

Terrified, Weiss whispered, “M… me?”

“I agree; it's jasmine.” Cinder sounded completely at ease, which only made Weiss feel less so. Her hand came up to pet along the side of her neck. “Soft skin. Really takes good care of herself.”

“W-wait, I'm… what are you doing to me?” No answer. The three petting hands were joined by two more in the small of her back, and she clamped her eyes shut. “What… are you going to… do?”

Lips next to her ear told her in a whisper, “Whatever you want.” She couldn't even tell who they belonged to.

“Please… I…”

Something she would never have predicted in all her life happened. She realised that beneath her fear, and how little she wanted those three to be pressing in on her from all sides… it was also the most exciting thing that had ever happened in her short, sheltered life. Her hands came up to slap Cinder, or push her away, and only wound up resting on her shoulders.

“Golly gee,” came a husky voice from her left side. Probably Blake, if they hadn't changed positions. “I think… she's into it.”

“Naturally.” Weiss finally opened her eyes, only to see the burning embers staring back as Cinder whispered, “I think this has been a very successful test. Don't you?”

Weiss swallowed. After a moment, she managed to breathe, “I… I d-don't… please stop, I’m-” Instantly, they all backed off. “Huh?”

“Now I'm more worried about Yang being with you than you being with Yang,” Blake laughed. Of the three of them, she was the only one who looked a little flustered.

“You stopped.”

“Mmm, we did,” Cinder said with a smug smirk. “The word ‘stop’ was pretty clear. Besides, our goal wasn't to start a foursome in the middle of the parking lot. Just to see if you were… open to courting one of us, or if our fearless leader would be wasting her time.”

Emerald patted her arm, and it was a lot more platonic. “Looks like you're our kinda girl, Schnee.”

“No,” she breathed. But she sounded less than sure. Yang's kiss returned to the forefront of her mind, and her already-flushed face turned darker.

“It's alright,” Blake offered gently. That was enough to make her feel a little flare of affection for her, simply because it was the kindest thing any of them had said since this sapphic gauntlet began. “None of us are going to judge you, obviously.”

Cinder let out a harsh little laugh. “Pampering the new blood? No. Let her figure it out on her own like we had to. It will make her stronger.”

“I'm not joining your little social club,” Weiss said defiantly. Though her voice shook, at least she did it.

“Listen to this rich girl. What a-”

“That's alright,” Blake cut her off. “Take your time. Girls?”

At Blake's prompt, Cinder and Emerald began to walk away with her toward their bikes. It was only Blake who looked back, though her expression was unreadable. The entire encounter had left the pampered princess shaken and her legs buckled, sending her down to the pavement. There she remained, trembling and completely useless, until Pyrrha arrived.

“You alright?” she asked gently, reaching down a hand to help her up as her green eyes stared down in concern.

“Just… take me home, please?”

It took twice as long for her to finish her homework that night. Pyrrha stayed with her, and listened when she needed to vent about what was going on with the Dragons. After a while, the subject became the prime focus.

“So do you think they might be right? That you're… like they are?”

“Of course not!” Weiss burst out, flopping onto her back on her canopy bed. “I like boys! Sun, that football player? O-or… um, I don't know, um…”

The taller girl shrugged, penciling in another answer. “You don't have to prove anything to me, Weiss. But it doesn't sound like you wanted them to stop.”

“Like I…” Blinking, she turned toward her more fully. “What do you mean? I was terrified!”

“No, of course! I'm sorry, I didn't mean that you wanted them to keep going, either - or that they should have done that! Still… the way you talk about it doesn't make it seem as if the event itself was bad. Only that you didn't trust the people doing it, so you weren't comfortable with it going further. That's all I'm trying to say.”

Her cheeks were already darkening. “So I would have been alright with it if it was Yang, is that what you're trying to say?”

“I don't know! I've never had to think about girls going with girls before!” Sighing, she reached over to pat Weiss's wrist. “Please know that if you tell me you're not interested, then I believe you. But if you're asking how this sounds to me…”

“Oh…” She sighed, putting her hand over Pyrrha's. They shared a tentative smile. “You're right, I'm sorry. I'm just really on edge. Let's get back to work.”

Late that night, a sharp sound startled Weiss awake. When she went to her window to see the source, she was just in time to watch a rock ricochet off the glass. Staring down at the ground a floor below, she was able to make out the dim figure of Yang Xiao Long.

“What are you doing?!” she mouthed after opening the window. All Yang did was motion for her to come outside. “No! It’s almost midnight!”

“Come on!” Yang mouthed, glancing around nervously.

“How?!” Her hands swept wide to the roof. There was no way for her to get outside without going through the entire house. Yang pointed to the corner; there was a trellis lining one side of the porch. “Oh…”

“Hurry!”

Cursing her own stupidity, Weiss put on her heeled slippers with white rabbit fur pom poms and cautiously climbed out the window onto the thin lip of roof that stretched over the porch, knowing she was about to fall and break her neck. The one time she glanced over, she saw Yang was a lot closer now, standing just below where Weiss was crouching. Ready to catch her if need be. A little at a time, she made her way over to the trellis until she could safely climb down.

“There,” Yang whispered now that they could hear each other properly, cradling her in her arms like a lifeguard with a drowning victim.

“Put me down!” Yang did, though she looked regretful. “Thank you.”

“Great. C'mon, let’s take a walk.”

Once they were down the block and away from her home, Weiss demanded, “Alright, what is so important it couldn’t wait until tomorrow? My father would blow his stack if he found out I was sneaking out in the middle of the night like this!”

“Blake told me what happened.”

Gulping, she felt her shoulders go stiff. “And?”

“And… I wanted you to know, I had nothing to do with that. Like, I was gonna give you a few days to figure out how you felt. They weren’t supposed to rush you.”

“Oh.” The tension didn’t leave, but her ire began to wane. This wasn't what she had been expecting at all. “I suppose I believe you. They never said you asked them to do it, and I didn’t see you looking at me after they dropped the note.”

“Note?”

As they walked, Weiss recounted her side of the story on the after-school encounter. Yang mostly just listened, hands stuffed in the pockets of her leather jacket and expression impassive. They had reached a cul-de-sac when the tale finished up.

“You could have punched Cinder in the tit. She talks a big game, but she’s really only dangerous if she’s got a knife in her hands. Or fire; she’s a terrible firebug. Otherwise, you could probably take her if you needed to.”

“But could I have taken all three of them? When I’ve never so much as thrown a punch before?”

Yang snorted. “Fair point.”

“They really thought I wanted to… I don��t know, date all of them at once? But that’s crazy!”

“You were into it, though.” Before Weiss could protest, she held up a hand. “It was new. You liked the attention, and it felt real neat and exciting with them being so close, even if you were scared and might not have really wanted it if you had the chance to think.”

The accuracy of her assessment stunned the prissy girl. “Yeah. That’s… that’s it exactly.”

“I get it. And they’re all really hot.”

“That’s less pertinent,” she sighed.

“Really? Which one isn’t hot?”

“None of them! To me! I mean, I like boys!”

“Do you?” she pressed, reaching over to take up Weiss’s hand and swing it idly between them. Weiss didn’t pull it away. “You can like both, you know. Like Coco.”

In a small voice, Weiss whispered, “But I don’t. Before now, I’ve never really thought enough about dating anybody at all. Boy, girl, wooly mammoth… nobody. Even if I do think Elvis is dreamy.” Yang laughed. “Stop making fun of me all the time!”

“Wooly mammoth,” she chortled, and Weiss finally cracked a reluctant smile. “Good one.”

“Thanks, I guess.”

“But seriously, I meant it when I said I would back off if you weren’t interested. But I didn’t want you thinking they were shaking you down for answers for my sake. They were being overprotective all on their own.”

“Protecting you against me? That makes no sense. You’re so…”

One of Yang’s eyebrows went up, but Weiss didn’t finish and she didn’t force the issue. “Even Dragons are human. Well, these Dragons are.” Sighing, she looked up at the sky as they paced down the sidewalk. “Lot of crap in my past I’m not proud of. Pain. I broke some hearts. A couple girls broke mine. Whatever. But they know that when I go all-in on a girl, I go all-in. No beating around the bush.”

“And… they don’t want to see you get hurt again?”

“Yeah.”

“Wow,” Weiss breathed. “I didn’t expect you to admit you get hurt.”

“I get hurt all the time. Of course, my response is usually to hurt back.” Her grin was lopsided, and for some reason it made Weiss’s heart skip over a beat. “But hey, sex is just sex. If you did decide to try a little fun with all three of them, I wouldn’t care.”

Now her heart was just stopping dead entirely. It took a few seconds for her to resume normal breathing and hiss, “YANG! That is so inappropriate! I w-wouldn’t- that isn’t how I-”

“Whatever. I’m not here to pass judgment. ‘Let whoever is without sin cast the first stone’ and all. You wanna chase another girl? Have at it. I got no room to talk.”

Weiss’s face was still hot enough to fry an egg on it, but she was too startled by the quote not to respond. “You know the Bible? You?”

Taking offense, Yang straightened a little more. “Yeah, me. My stepmom used to take us to Sunday School all the time. But that was before…”

The particular flavour of silence Yang lapsed into somehow told Weiss she shouldn’t push that topic. So she didn’t. Instead, she squeezed Yang’s hand a little as they walked. In that moment, they both seemed to notice they were still holding hands and let go, walking a little further apart.

“Okay, here’s your stop.”

“Right.” Glancing at her house, she looked back toward Yang. “Um… I feel like I should thank you, but I’m not sure why.”

“Then don’t,” she snorted.

“Oh wait - thank you for telling me you didn’t ask them to flirt with me so much. It really… I mean, you might want to think about whose company you keep, but at least it helps me feel less, um, like prey.”

“You’re still prey. I’m just a sporting hunter.”

Weiss’s stomach dropped away as Yang put her hands on her waist. She thought for sure something was going to happen - but instead, she merely lifted her up to the trellis so she could climb to her bedroom. Every time she felt those hands on her body, she lost her breath and her power of rational thought. It was intimidating and frightening and exhilarating all at once.

She had only gone halfway up when she lost one of her slippers. Yang picked it up and hissed, “You want this now?”

“Wait until I get up there!” she whispered, climbing the rest of the way. Then she turned to catch the slipper…

Only to see Yang pacing away. As loud as she could muster without worrying about waking anyone up, she hissed, “Wait! That’s mine!”

“I’ll keep this as a souvenir, Cinderella,” she hissed back at her, twirling it around in her hand and winking at its owner. “Maybe you can be my queen someday.”

Then Weiss was alone, standing next to her open window with only one slipper and trying to figure out why her life had taken so many incredible turns.
