Finally got around to watching Being the Recardos on Amazon Prime after procrastinating for months... ugh, why do I torture myself? I knew it was going to be God-awful.
I generally hate biopics. It’s just too hard to cram an entire person’s life in 2 hours. I much prefer to read a biography or memoir which offers deeper insight and can be thorough and detailed or watch a doc. Real stories are always more interesting than dramatizations. That being said, my main issue was with the casting. I just couldn’t see Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem disappear into the roles of Lucy and Desi. They looked NOTHING like them. I will give props to Kidman to at least nailing Lucy’s voice, but otherwise, her hair and makeup was atrocious and did not embody Lucy at all (it looks better on the obviously photoshopped poster, trust me... it looks like utter sh- in the movie). I generally like Bardem but he was miscast as Desi. So he’s got an accent so what? A guy who was shorter and didn’t speak in a deep baritone would have been a better choice. I would have preferred unknowns in these parts. When you use A-list actors who are supposed to be representing Icons, it’s hard to see them as the people they’re meant to be portraying because they’re too recognizable themselves.
Tumblr media
I also had issues with the actress playing Vivan Vance as well (too lazy to look up her name). She was about the right age as Viv maybe a couple years younger but much too thin and pretty. Viv was an attractive woman when she wasn’t playing Ethel (they always made her look frumpy and older than she was irl) but you have to keep in mind she wasn’t a pin-up girl, either and she wasn’t old but she wasn’t that young either. She was 42 albeit classy but still... the hair was all wrong and I just couldn't see her as Vivian. In fact, after comparing their pictures side by side I think Vivian was much more glamorous but she wasn’t supposed to look that glamorous as Ethel... they let Ethel be glammed up in the later episodes and this was an issue that cropped up in the movie but still. The actress didn’t even try to do her voice and sounded nothing like Vivian so she just didn’t do it for me. The only actor that completely fit his part was JK Simmons as William Frawley. Maybe he was thinner than Frawley but he got the voice and mannerisms down pat that if I closed my eyes I could totally see Frawley speaking. Now if only the rest of the cast was as good as he was, the movie would have been at least partly bearable.
Tumblr media
I gather this movie was intended to be a low budget TV movie because that’s exactly what it felt like. No effort put into it all because it went direct to streaming.
Also there were so many historical inaccuracies, too many to list off but purist Lucy fans would spot the inconsistencies from a mile away (the most glaring issue was how Lucy and Desi met on the set of Too Many Girls in 1940).
Honestly... the costume department couldn’t have done a worse job...
Tumblr media
Was this supposed to be Lucy’s natural brunette hair? Cause no.... no it’s not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry but Kidman just couldn’t capture her beauty at all...
The Communist speech was also really cheesy... the audience reactions could not be more forced and you can tell when they were told to gasp and look shocked. If Desi’s speech was staged for the cameras I could forgive the forced reactions but it was not staged and the audience irl was not expecting Desi’s speech. If you look up the actual address Desi gave to the studio audience it was much less dramatic and easier to suspend one’s disbelief.
The film offered nothing new either... in fact the crappy 1991 TV movie Before the Laughter did a more entertaining job of capturing Lucy and Desi’s rocky marriage than this movie did. I didn’t care for Maurice Benard as Desi but Frances Fisher KILLED it as Lucy. It was not a great movie by any means but I’d rather watch that one any day over this hot mess.
The only thing I can say that was positive was that it was a wise choice to zero in on a single week of filming the I Love Lucy show as opposed to showing their entire lives and careers. we see parts of that but there was too much to show in 2 hours so focusing on a single moment in their lives and what led up to that was for the best so that it didn’t feel too rushed. Biopics work best when you’re focusing on just one thing. But that being said the movie still fell flat on its character development and there was no emotional connection to Lucy and Desi at all. In 2 hours I felt like I still didn’t really know who these people were. It was a very surface level movie with no real deep commentary or themes or anything. I also hated the fake interviews with the writers as the movie’s opening it was very weak and cliche. They were trying to push this movie as a docu drama but it wasn’t. It was just another bad dramatization of two Hollywood Legends with no new insight.
But then I didn’t really expect it to be a good movie so can’t say it met my expectations or really disappointed me because I had none going in.
I’m definitely going to watch the far more superior documentary Lucy and Desi directed by Amy Poehler. Docs are always 10000x better than crappy biopics.

Navarrete defends his WBO junior lightweight world title against Oscar Valdez on Saturday, August 12, at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona & LIVE on ESPN
SAN DIEGO - Three-division world champion Emanuel “Vaquero”  Navarrete is ready for an all-Mexican war.    Navarrete puts his WBO junior lightweight world title on the line against former two-division world champion Oscar Valdez on Saturday, August 12, at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.   Navarrete-Valdez, Raymond Muratalla-Diego Torres and Richard Torrez Jr.-Willie Jake Jr. will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.   Promoted by Top Rank, tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.   Navarrete (37-1, 31 KOs), the fighting pride of San Juan Zitlaltepec, captured the WBO junior featherweight world title by defeating Isaac Dogboe in December 2018. After five defenses, he moved up to featherweight and defeated Ruben Villa for the vacant WBO title in October 2020. The 28-year-old defended his crown against Christopher Diaz, Joet Gonzalez, and Eduardo Baez. In February, he became a three-division world champion with a ninth-round knockout victory over Liam Wilson. Valdez (31-1, 23 KOs), from Nogales, represented Mexico at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. The 32-year-old captured his first world title in July 2016 with a second-round stoppage win over Matias Rueda. In February 2021, he became a two-division world champion with a 10th-round knockout against Miguel Berchelt. Valdez suffered his first loss to Shakur Stevenson in April 2022 and is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Adam Lopez in May.   After a recent training session at The BXNG Club in San Diego, this is what Navarrete said:   "The training camp has been intense. The preparation was very tough. Fortunately, we were able to carry it out quite well. I had always done things in a conventional way, but now we have included a physical trainer, Francisco Javier Orozco. This fight with Valdez merited that change, and I will come into this fight much better physically." "Winning this fight would boost my career significantly. Personally, I would feel complete. What has been missing in my career is precisely a victory against someone like Valdez. It would fill me with pride to be part of such an iconic fight between Mexicans and come out victorious."   "People know that I throw a lot of punches and that I’m always in attractive fights. Now, with Valdez, I believe it will be twice as spectacular. Valdez is a fighter who doesn't hold back. We always see him moving forward and throwing punches."   "He says he's going to knock my head off, but let's see whose head comes off first. Let's see what Valdez has to offer, and let's see how much he can endure and how much I can endure, too."

The Best Actor Oscar race is in full speculative swing right now. Many critics out there hedging their bets between critical acclaim, life time achievement and classics updated with diversity, giving chances for actors not usually offered the classic roles. I’ve been trying to see all the performances, but I’m probably only a third through them. So I want to talk about my take on some of the front runners.
I want to start with Will Smith. I have never seen Will be anything else than Will Smith. Until King Richard. He plays Richard Williams, an older man than himself, who by sheer determination, a solid plan, and extremely talented daughters, pushes and sculpts the girls journey into professional tennis. Will plays Richard as single minded and driven, breaking rules, doing things his way, not following the traditional path in order to catapult his daughters into the pro tennis world. It’s a character based on a real person. There are few surprises about Richard, many of us know his story, and we’ve seen characters break barriers down before with talent, determination and conviction. It’s a pleasing movie, we all know the plot and the ending as we sit down to watch. It’s uplifting, and Richard’s hard work pays off. Will does a good job. But is the role extraordinary? No. A character we will refer to in the future? I don’t believe so. It’s a good bio pic, solid performances all around. But this isn’t Will Smith as Best Actor, not in this tight field.
Next is Andrew Garfield in Tick, Tick,…Boom! It’s a great performance by Andrew. The film takes us into the life of stage musical writer Jonathan Larsen, on the cusp of success, yet to write Rent and become a Broadway icon. Have we seen it before? Yes. The drive, the screwed up relationships, the sacrifice, the poverty of unrecognised genius, the determination of gifted souls. Fosse/Verdon comes to mind, but Andrew excels in this role, showing us more talents than we knew he had. It’s a good film. Outstanding or groundbreaking? No. Is the role one of which audiences will refer to as important in the history of cinema? No.
Leonardo DeCaprio in Don’t Look Up gives us a solid performance of a scientist loosing it big time as he tries to warn the world that an asteroid is going to hit earth. Leo does not rely on his looks or leading man status, he looks like a geek professor in any university here. During the process of trying to inform the citizens of the US that they only have 6 months of life left, his character, Dr Mindy, has a wild affair with a news announcer (Cate Blanchette) gets some fame from his TV appearances and finally resigns himself to the reality of human nature. It’s a good performance, funny at times, terrified at others. But once again the role itself is not iconic. I loved the movie but it’s not the best of the year.
Javier Bardem as Desi Arnez in Being the Ricardos may seem miscast, as does Nicole Kidman as Lucy, but this movie is not solely about their comedy. It’s about their business sense, their politics, so the two actors fit well into the plot. It’s a bio picture, so nothing really new or surprising here. Bardem’s Desi is a player, an ambitious man who adores the USA and wants to achieve his own American Dream. He loves life and Bardem shows us all these facets beautifully. Again, it’s a bio picture, so it’s difficult to create something brand new, never seen before or outstanding. I doubt Academy voters will vote this into the race.
Finally there is Mahershala Ali in Swan Song. A good solid performance but one we’ve seen before. His character is dying and technology provides him with a human avatar, a synthetic human replacement. Mahershala is a great actor but this isn’t the film people will remember him for.
So, Benedict Cumberbatch is so far my only pick for a win in Best Actor category. His Phil is an iconic role, repressed, lonely, missing his partner in all things; Bronco Henry. He is a conflicting personality who never escaped the grief cycle . A bad guy with issues. An iconic villain role, albeit one with depth and pathos. I do think Phil will enter the halls of great characters, villains, misunderstood historic figures. The repressed and toxic closeted gay cowboy, the bookend to Ennis and Jack. So far, and I admit I am bias, Benedict Cumberbatch knocks this one out of the park. He already leads the field in Best Actor winners from the various critic groups in the US. Surely the Oscar is his?
(I will return to discuss Macbeth with Denzel, Peter Dinklage in Cyrano and others later in the New Year.)
