Rukia knew that she had gotten too close- changed too much. This world and all the people in it, especially a certain substitute shinigami, had seeped into her skin and rooted into her heart without her knowledge.

Ichigo had taken her powers- siphoned almost every drop of her reiatsu, and now he threatened to take something else. Every day and every night was filled with him, with his overwhelming strength and relentless need to protect everyone, yes including her. She was finding herself concerned for him, wanting him to win, to get stronger and be better, even though she knew that it was all temporary and that she would be found and they would most likely kill him. The idea choked the breath out of her, waking her up at all hours of the night.

And he worried! He worried and fussed and would give her these looks that would make her shiver because he was seeing more than what she was willing to show. This was too much. She couldn't stay here any longer. She had to go.

Rukia's eyes snapped open, startled awake once again by the pressing anxiety. She took a deep, calming breath, trying to force herself to sleep.

"Rukia?"

The sound of her whispered name startled her. She turned her head towards the sliding door, opening it slightly. "Why aren't you asleep?"

"I could tell you were awake," Ichigo replied, his voice too soft in the darkness. Rukia closed her eyes.

"Hey, Rukia?"

"Yes, Ichigo," her voice is thick on her tongue. She heard the rustling of Ichigo's bedsheets as he turned to face her. She imagined his face and eyes soft with sleep.

"I wanted to say, in case I don't get to later, thank you. Just...thank you."

Rukia choked out a small, wet laugh. She hadn't noticed the tears, "Fool," she whispered. Soon after, Ichigo's steady breathing filled the silence as sleep took him. It did not do the same for her.

The following night, Ichigo lay bleeding on the concrete under the summer rain, watching her leave. Rukia turned if only to see him one last time. She told him to stay there, and that she wouldn't forgive him if he followed. And so, under the relentless rain, Rukia left a piece of her heart in Karakura City.

One thing I'm finding that I like about shipping is looking at the pair and going who is the most fun to see pining.

Like yeah yeah mutual pining is fine and all but Yuki pining after Muku is a lot more fun to think about then the other way around. Especially because Muku is just like that how can you really be sure he's not just being sweet little Muku.

That being said I also like to think about the "who fell first, who fell harder" thing and like obviously Muku fell first. And clearly, he fell pretty hard so I hope Yuki's okay.
