so i had a couple ocs as a kid (made for a story that i never wrote a lot for) and i haven’t drawn any of them since i was like. 14. so it’s been a hot minute but anyway i realized the other day that out of the 5 main cast i have gotten 3 of their haircuts. i remember vaguely thinking that one character always seemed to have the haircut i wanted and i had that haircut for years but recently i got rid of that haircut and had another one’s haircut then i changed it a bit and dyed it and now i have another one’s. so i’m like man 12 year old me had great taste in haircuts. i should go down the list and do them all

Nat is called Sugar far less in season 2 than in season 1.
The nickname Sugar has a lot of significance.  Firstly, it’s notable because it’s an ingredient.  It’s used in the kitchen, but it has no agency in the kitchen.  We see in the flashbacks in season 1 that both Carmy and Nat are not allowed in Mikey’s kitchen, but it’s in different ways.  Carmy and Mikey cook together, but Carmy’s not allowed to take the final step and follow him to the Beef.  Nat, however, is rejected from the cooking process altogether – she’s belittled and stopped when she tries to add raisins, her cooking isn’t right, it isn’t good enough.  She’s an ingredient in the kitchen, nothing more.  Similarly in the present day she at first has a similar role: she’s in Carmy’s life, she turns up at the Beef, she comes across at first as miserable and nagging (which she is, and reasonably! Her brother just killed himself! Her other brother looks like he’s headed in the same direction!).  She hates the Beef and everything it stands for, so while she’s there, she takes no part in it, she refuses to engage in it, just as she is not allowed to engage in the family activity in the flashback.
(Notably, sugar as an ingredient is often dismissed as merely existing to sweeten food.  However, it’s crucial for many other aspects of baked goods such as moistness, texture, and sometimes leavening.  Sugar is seen by many as something to cut out, or cut down on, but it’s essential in tying together the finished product.)
Secondly, the nickname Sugar itself, we learn in season 2, comes from a place of humiliation.  This information further cements the idea that Sugar doesn’t belong in the kitchen – she mixes up sugar and salt, and she’s known forever for it, she’s known forever for the fact that she can’t cook, that she doesn’t cook.  Given how important food is for the Berzattos (clearly) this just serves to alienate her from the heart of the family.  Calling her that is a constant reminder that she’s not part of it all in the same way her brothers are, calling her that in the present is a reminder that she’s not part of the restaurant.  And when the restaurant becomes her brothers’ whole lives, she’s not allowed to be part of that either.  She’s estranged when we meet her, looking in, trying to reach out but struggling to do so.
I’m pretty sure Pete never calls her Sugar, he might be the only one not to.  This is because he’s an icon a legend the moment.  However, side note on Pete – he does cook.  In the Christmas flashback he brings tuna casserole.  His cooking, however, isn’t right for the family.  He was specifically told not to bring food (not to bring sustenance, not to bring care) and he does anyway! But this sustenance doesn’t fit with the rest of the family, with Donna’s expectations (and the episode is all dancing around Donna, around her dysfunction, and Pete’s steadiness and kindness doesn’t fit in a household like that), so it’s rejected.  It starts to make a lot more sense why everyone hates him in season 1.  Importantly also, I think, it’s tuna casserole.  This dish is often maligned as bland or boring or goofy, and Pete can seem that way when compared with the high energy and intensity of the Berzattos.  But it has staying power because it’s cheap and simple and it lasts, because it’s versatile, because it can be comforting.  Pete isn’t a flashy character, you wonder sometimes at first why Nat married him.  But he’s deeply deeply kind and comforting and steady, wholly at odds with the Berzattos and completely what Nat needs.  And to him, she’s not Sugar because she’s not alienated from him.
Obviously with time and effort Nat and Carmy get closer.  We find out she cosigned for the Beef, she is part of this even if she doesn’t seem to be.  She gets involved more and more with the building, at first out of necessity but later out of care.  Season 2 rolls around and she becomes project manager, she slowly admits she works there, she takes on more and more responsibility with it.  She gets closer to the other employees, it’s clear she and Syd have a real friendship going on.  She gets happier, she loves it! And I don’t have time to unpack it now but I think there’s something there about the fact that she’s pregnant and this is a family restaurant, that she gets to help make it better.  If the Beef is the family, Nat gets to make it something functional.  Something something breaking cycles.  And as she gets closer into the kitchen (to the extent that she’s wiping plates in the last episode, she’s got an apron on, she’s literally right there in the middle of it), as she gets less alienated and more involved, she’s Nat more and more often.  When she’s called Sugar in the Christmas episode it’s almost a surprise because she hasn’t been referred to by it for a while.  She’s not being made fun of for her outsider status anymore, she’s being let in.  She’ll never mix up sugar and salt again.

Genuinely a shame that resident evil doesn't really go into food that much, but I also completely understand since the "food" you see being eaten 99% of the time is people and rot. However, this will not stop me from food related headcanons, so lets talk about eating traits for the recurring (3 or more separate RE appearances) cast:
Chris Redfield- Never been a picky eater. Before RE5, he pretty much let his metabolism do all the work along with his "stay in shape" workout regimen, so he ate whatever he wanted and most of the time it was junk food, fast food, and meals with a lot of bread and potatoes. When he started working out more, his diet shifted to eating more fats and proteins since they give him a steady flow of energy instead of quick bursts. It doesn't mean he's stopped eating junk food or eating out. His palette simply changed from eating bags of chips and a roll of cookies everyday to maybe a large bag or two of chips and a large pack of cookies that he slowly finishes over the span of a few weeks. Beer and water are interchangeable depending on the meal.
Jill Valentine- She's the pasta person that will use a fork and a spoon underneath to twirl her noodles before eating them. Loves anything covered in a good savory sauce, and she will tear bits of bread off to swipe the rest of her plate clean. She prefers chicken over beef and pork over tofu. Entered a hot wing eating contest once on a dare, and she lost, but she made sure to find out what hot sauce they used so she could keep a bottle in her pantry. She drinks a lot of water, and she likes the taste of it. Not a fan of tea unless it's iced and sweetened heavily. Otherwise not really a fan of sweets when it comes to candy or baked goods unless there's some tartness or sourness to it.
Rebecca Chambers- Her diet leans more into foods she doesn't need utensils to finish like sandwiches, wraps, tacos, and the classic pizza fold with thin crust. She has a sweet tooth, but this is mainly for drinks and hard candies. She loves soda. She doesn't like how gummy candy sticks to her teeth due to the texture. Baked sweets are okay as long as they aren't super sticky to handle, but she'll make an exception for things which have a heavy amount of chocolate. She has a bag of mini-muffins on her desk for breakfast in the mornings. People know not to take any unless they desire her wrath. She knows when Chris has eaten them when she see's a package of snack cakes and an apology post-it note in her drawer.
Barry Burton- Before the gun incident, Barry was the guy who ate primarily meats and very little vegetables unless his stomach was fighting him. After the incident, he opened up his palette more to show he appreciated the hard work put into the meal. Ask him what his favorite food is and his answer changes every time cause it's always what his wife cooked for dinner the night before. He's a dinner guy. He's either too tired in the mornings or too in a rush to go to work, so breakfast is a no-go, but dinners are spent with his family, and post Revelations 2, he cherished them even more. Only drinks water from the tap.
Albert Wesker- Eats expensive looking food because it has the least amount of mess during consumption, and is an ego boost to his god complex wherein everything has to be prepared exactly to his taste. If during his time with S.T.A.R.S they managed to drag him out to eat, he would get a drink and nothing else. He doesn't like limp vegetables no matter how much dressing people cover them in to compensate, and he hates greasy food. His taste towards sweet things are minimal. He enjoys sweeter cheeses like cream cheese or mascarpone, and he tried to like tiramisu, but he didn't like how soft angel fingers are. He will also only eat macarons with a dark chocolate filling sandwiched between. Neutral about water and enjoys teas and wines.
Claire Redfield- Was the pickiest eater as a kid. Hated it when the food on her plate touched, or the juice from one part of her meal touched the other. She had the special disposable plates where each part of her meal was separated so that she'd actually finish the food she was given. She was also disgusted with canned vegetables. As an adult most of those hang-ups are gone. She'll eat almost anything now, and she loves trying new foods from the places she travels to. Flatbreads are her best friend. Pita, naan, chapati, and so on, she can make a meal out of bread and butter alone. She still hates canned vegetables, but she buys fresh or frozen vegetables and incorporates them into her meals where she can. She also hates the taste of water. She'll go for coffee or tea first.
Leon Kennedy- Allegedly is relaxed with all foods except when there's one thing on it he doesn't want to eat. No pickles on his burger. No red onions in his guacamole. No sliced fruit in or on his cake. It's not even that he hates these ingredients or has a texture discrepancy. He just has preferences on where they should be and where they shouldn't. He'll put those same pickles on his club sandwich, or ask for red onions on pizza, and he loves a good fruit pie. He also eats so many of those pre-packaged fruit cups. Neutral about regular water but treats flavored sparkling water like a treat and sometimes hides it in his flask. It's a fun prank to play on Claire.
Ada Wong- Eats more vegetarian style meals, but is not a vegetarian. This isn't done on purpose or for any particular reason. Simply a lot of the meals she favors tend to have an equal amount of vegetables and grains to a lower amount of meat, and some cooks are much more scarce on the meat than others. This resulted in a palate shift where she's fine if there isn't meat on her plate. She's not a big fan of greasy, deep-fried foods, but her guilty pleasure is shrimp toast, and she only has it off the clock when she finds someone who makes it well. Her other guilty pleasure is cinnamon sugar donuts, and she has that more often as a snack to finish off her lunch. Neutral about water and has an iced coffee preference.
Ingrid Hunnigan- She likes rice more than bread and will eat several bowls of rice with whatever the main food is if they go together. Seasoned and spiced long grain rice or plain sticky short grain rice, she'll enjoy them all as long as it's prepared correctly. Loves eating tofu. She'll trade any meat for tofu except for seafood. She's the one ordering surf and turf or the dish with shrimp in it if the option is available. Yet, she cannot eat anything with a face. She doesn't care how pretty the presentation is, there shouldn't be a shrimp or lobster head on her plate when she gets it. She always orders dessert unless she's eating with others, and likes anything cherry flavored. Enjoys drinking water and has to drink water between her energy drink refills.
Thanks for getting to the bottom of this even if you don't agree with any of them! I'll gladly do more of these for any other RE characters if asked, and I'm open to playful debate/convo about the ones listed or not listed.

team fortress classic modelling notes
long post below:
here are my notes on the models lol. its not rlly a reference guide. more of an observations collection. absolutely no ref sheets here. just modelling discussion.
polycounts: demo: 733 engineer: 793 heavy: 769 medic: 668 pyro: 714 scout: 769 sniper: 826 soldier: 742 spy: 722
engineer is the only one to have any kind of ass/chest modelling. everyone has their ass cheeks modelled seperately but engineer just has that detail of the chest also. its also comparitively quite big.
all of the models seem to share a base. fingers are not modelled. it is only the thumbs. tbh i would struggle to say that they use a lot of phototextures. i just think they look like that. i think it is a byproduct of the way things from the era got shaded and the fact that the textures have to be 256 colour bitmaps. they were modelled in 3dsmax.
there are no squares in this model. everything is split into triangles.
everything is very blocky as to be expected and i think everything was just extruded from rectangles. nothing fancy here animations are also re used. so are the bones. i dont know qbout every animation but most are shared. there are no saved skins. it is not like how in tf2 you have colour changed options baked into the model. i have never encountered this ive never seen anything like that outside of the game. i genuinely dont know how it works lol. ive decomplied the models many times with various programs and i have looked around. i dont know.
really specific infomation:
all the models have this really weird thing happening at their necks. like theres this triangle that sticks up. makes everyone look like they have very bad posture.
Tumblr media
very specific info: the tip of the noses are modelled as a flat square.
there is a pretty wide range in skintone. id say heavy and demo are the lightest though. engineer is very clearly the darkest. you cannot see snipers skin so that can be whatever you want.
scouts face is modelled weird that triangle going down from the lip really catches a lot of shadow and looks strange. the noses and ears are the only things every single model has modelled on its face. also big photo so have a view of the legs. all the models share these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want to port them to blender use the blender addon sourceio with the mdl files in your tfc install it works perfectly. or just use jeds half life tools for a model viewer (it also exports and imports textures)

[LONGPOST] I just finished... Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
I wanna write down all my thoughts before I delve into more in-depth online opinions. I'm writing this on the same day as having done the last two chapters of the game, so I may have not had time to process the story completely. However, I've been playing this game for the entire month and I got a lot to say. Obvious spoilers ahead, but I'll still try to keep some things vague enough.
Tumblr media
Okay Square Enix, you win, I'll use photo mode
Graphics in video games are like how attractive a dessert looks, it doesn't dictate how it will taste, but it makes you want to try it. Rebirth feels like one of those games that is finally showing what the PS5 is capable of, with environments extremely rich in detail, superb lightning that's both colorful and conveys the right emotion for each scene, this is the prettiest Final Fantasy has ever looked, even compared to 16 which had some optimization issues and dull lightning in some areas, specially towards endgame. No single location in Rebirth feels half-baked, what used to be single screens and flat textures in the original have been completely re-imagined to have their own identity. I will talk about more about the open environments when I talk about gameplay and exploration.
Tumblr media
Reliving the moments: Going above and beyond
The cutscene direction for this game is absolutely phenomenal, I love that they have amped up the campiness of the original 7, while also being faithful to the serious and emotional moments. What shines even more in Remake is the excellent writing when it comes to the characters, their performances are full of charisma, and it made it clear to me why the cast of seven ended up becoming so iconic to gaming as a whole. Every scene with these characters interacting, no matter if it was the dullest of sidequests, made everything entertaining. But the best part of Rebirth, like its predecessor, it's when it brings back the iconic moments we all wanted to see. The Junon Parade, Costa del Sol, Red XIII and Cosmo Canyon, Barret and Corel, and many more of these moments have barely altered from how they happened originally, reliving these moments feels like watching a high production TV Series based on a book you loved as a kid. If you love the original FFVII but have no intentions of playing the remake due to how things change, I at least recommend you look up the scenes that do stay faithful.
Tumblr media
Some things left me wanting
Still, Rebirth only covers up to the end of Disc 1 section of the story, and has some blatant teases from trailers and the game itself that left me wanting. The Planet's weapons are mentioned and different versions appear, but there's no Diamond or Ruby weapon superboss yet. Both Cid and Vincent make their debuts near the final chapters, but are not playable for now, which left me a little disappointed. And this lets me segway perfectly into the other best part of Rebirth...
Tumblr media
Can I just say I love the portraits in this game? Love me some PNGs
When I first played Part 1 of the Remake saga, I felt like I had no idea of what I was doing with the combat, I found the action-hybrid system too complicated and visually cluttered I felt like I was brute forcing every fight and not really enjoying myself. I finished the game and didn't come back to it until early this year where I decided to do Hard Mode for the Platinum, and this time I had a way better time, now understanding the combat system and each fight better. It makes for a flashy, semi tactical game with very visceral and satisfying animations, powers, character building thanks to materia, the importance of positioning, blocking, switching aggro, it felt like the realization of what games like FF12 and 13 aimed to be.
So imagine my surprise when Rebirth made it even better. Fundamentals are still the same, new skills were to be expected, but my favorite new addition are synergy skills. Not only do you get special commands you can perform with your partners in the party with extremely satisfying animations, you also have synergy real time action commands which reward you for being more reactive and agressive, now adding perfect blocks and counters, now every time you play with a different team composition you're gonna feel the difference of having Barret or Red or Yuffie as your partner, as you get access to different skills.
They also help you build ATB for characters not actively controlled at any given time, which is an excellent quality of life improvement. My only nitpick is that despite the menus allowing you to have 3 different party compositions and even allowing you to set the leader for each, Cloud is mandatory. Cloud is of course good at everything, so it's not the worst thing, but it does suck that I can't play as a team of Barret, Red, and Yuffie at any time in the open world. Though you can do that at virtual combat challenges or the colliseum. This feels like an oversight.
Fortunately, this meant I was playing around different characters all the time, because they're all great, and it feels super satisfying to set the right materia for each one according to what you envision them to be and complement their abbilities. Some are obvious: give Yuffie the steal materia, give Aerith healing materia. But who gets to be the mage, the debuffer, the buffer, the tank, that's up to you. I found Red XIII + Darkside materia works extremely well thanks to his Reaper Claw abbility and his health regeneration, sort of like a bestial Dark Knight, great crowd control and support all around. Cait Sith takes some work to get used to, and requires lots of setup, but his luck based gameplay can have some serious benefits, I'm sure he will come in handy in hard mode. Yuffie plays almost identically to her DLC, and she is excellent for handling boss fights with multiple parts or different weaknesses.
Tumblr media
Exploring will either be fun or tedious, depends on who you ask
I feel like the other primary component of the gameplay, which is the exploration and traversal, will be a bit more divisive. It takes tropes from standard open world games like towers, points of interest, fast travel, loot locations, hunts, there is nothing new or original about it. However, that doesn't mean it can't be fun. Completing areas feels like I'm playing a collect-a-thon akin to Sonic Frontiers, where while it may not be the most exciting thing in the world, it is very relaxing for me, as I take in the sights and look for ways to get to new areas and find the next rare fiend. What I enjoy about the world design is that areas are not large, but are very packed and designed in such a way where you can't get everywhere by just looking at markers on the map, sometimes you do have to look for clues on the environment to get to where you need to, meaning you're looking at where you're going more than your tracker, which is great, but you still get the benefits of one. So it's a nice compromise, not as open ended as BoTW or Elden Ring, but not as braindead as a Ubisoft game. However, completing these areas can take a while, and if you're like me and plan to do all of them, don't be surprised when each area can take you up to 10 hours if you want to do everything.
Tumblr media
"No seriously Cloud, I'm still waiting!" -Sephiroth, 100 hours into your game file
If you remember FF16 (I love that game too btw), you might remember how universally hated the sidequests were, not so much for their stories, but for their large amount and lack of variety. It seems like Rebirth is an active effort to avoid those same mistakes. Most sidequests in this game has you doing something different, have an entertaining story or character development attached to them, or even have you doing something dumb like bringing chickens back to their sweet innocent mother, or following an Ex Shinra employee in some brutal gold saucer challenges. I won't say every sidequest is a winner, at the end of the day, they're still busywork, and never will a game make you feel good saying "Congratulations on your progress, you have unlocked even more sidequests to do!". Still, I have to commend them, they do not bombard you with them, you can do a few at a time and be good for the next area, and the rewards allow your party to access more skills.
Tumblr media
They have some of the most fun music too
The sidequest also introduce an excuse to have you do more of the minigames and take on their harder difficulties. And BOY did they add soooo many minigames, I could not believe I was encountering a new one what feels like every hour. There's something both horrifying and admirable about the devs commitment to bring back the spirit of a ps1 classic in this way. Have you noticed that triple AAA games basicly don't do minigames anymore? Yea fishing games are still around I guess, but Rebirth is not ashamed to harken to those videogamey roots and sheer goofiness. Red football, Fort Condor (love the reinterpretation), Super Dolphin Sunshine, and so many more. Enjoy youself with these minigames, and pick your least favorites too because there will be at least one that will make you want to break your controller. Contenders for me are Glide de Chocobo for it's terrible camera, and Gears & Gambits for having an overwhelming amount of Gambits for such a simple minigame (even FF12 had you start with a small amount). Still, there is more bad than good here. What I was not expecting was a brand new card game, akin to Triple Triad in 8 and 14: Queen's Blood.
Tumblr media
*Insert Yugioh abridged reference here*
Not only did I not expect a new card game 2 hours into the game, I did not expect it to be so good, and have me thinking about different deck builds, deck synergy, strategies, and ways to one up your opponent with some smart plays. Queen's Blood is an extremely fun time sink and nice break from all the combat and normal exploration. It can be overwhelming at first, and having so many different cards with effects each is a hassle I've seen many not even wanting to bother with, finding some of its rules to be too confusing. I will say that if you're not constantly updating your deck with better cards you won't be making much progress, but you also won't know what cards are better if you don't play enough to get what your objective is, so it's best to start getting into it the sooner you start the game. Do make sure you take note of some of the later puzzles and challenges, as they can teach you strategies to make comebacks on hard duels.Screw the survival challenges, though.
Tumblr media
But the journey isn't quite the same, after all
Perhaps the stuff I have the least things to say about, are the new elements to the story, which are more prevalent during the beginning and ending sequences of the game. I was honestly intrigued at the start, the tension and anxiety felt in this unknown timeline Zack has walked into, and the mystery surrounding the true fate of our protagonists, as it shows you bits and pieces of more information the further you progress, I was curious to where things were going. Unfortunately, the ending provided even more questions than answers, and I still feel like it's not as emotionally impactful as perhaps it intends to be, maybe due to the lack of clear information. I understand it wants to keep itself vague with the idea of multiple timelines and universes colliding, or what Sephirot's actual plan is. But it does make things like the Whispers feel even more pointless than when they showed up in Remake, but at least their presence has been reduced, as expected. Areas where changes to the story were most effective were when they were not pointed out to be a product of a split timeline, like the conclusion to the Junon festival, or the Gongaga reactor sections.
But of course, what most people were more curious about, was how was the ending going to change, we all knew it was going to be different no matter what. And while I feel like these convoluted elements do take off some of the emotion of the original scene, there is one element which does seem to align these new events with the emotions of the original: Cloud himself. For he experiences the events of the ending differently from the rest, and it's left unclear how reliable is his perspective. Add Sephiroth's manipulation of Cloud's emotions and he becomes this genuinely creepy and ruthless shell of himself. This new problem does not completely go away by the end, as Cloud is not fully aware of it yet. But with how the new version of the ending has unfolded, it left me with these feeling of doubt and... hollowness, confusion, not sure if to be sad, or hopeful. Which I feel is exactly how Cloud feels as well, as his human nature is questioned.
Despite thinking a faithful story remake would have been more satisfying, I can't deny these new events had me thinking about the story of FInal Fantasy 7 in ways I could connect emotionally to it even more. Perhaps, what this game truly achieved for me, is remind me just how much I love this franchise, for its extremely creative worlds and creatures, to its unique stories and unforgettable characters. Rebirth is a celebration of Final Fantasy, a joy to look and play, to relive and to guess. It's got one more part to prove if these changes to the narrative were really worth it, nonetheless. And honestly, I hope they don't keep relying on vagueness as much.
But when they are not being vague, I promise you, every moment, old or new, will feel exciting.

Cooking w/ Tommy
Tumblr media
- usually depends on what your cooking to see if you will both burn it or it will actually turn out decent
- You guys would probably be baking a cake out of straight boredom
- You guys would over do something while cooking for sure like to much milk or to many eggs
- “Hope for the best” vibes, no instructions, no baking help nothing just you both with a box of cake batter and the ingredients
- He would put some batter on your face for sure resulting in you both to have a good fight
- Bc of that you would both end up only having enough for a cupcake a single cupcake
- Either you run out of batter while fighting or you guys were eating it all in one go as soon as you made it
- You guys would over bake it or under bake it because you didn’t read the instructions
- Now if you guys were cooking actually food you would definitely have to have Phil or Wilbur with you because you both can even be trusted to put a glass of water
- Either one of the adults would guide you to cooking as you both ignored them and just winged it all
- The food wouldn’t come out that bad (Phil would just make you eat what you made and Wilbur will probably make you guys re do it until it comes out edible)
- It was edible at least so that’s ok
- If you can cook good tommy is just a watcher and a tester for the food
- He’s Like those food judges that just try the food and because of that they act like they know everything because they use fancy describing words
“This flavor, has such a neat and tasty texture and is this butter? Mhmmm! This adds such a delicious salty after taste”
- overall tommy is pretty fun to cook with if you guys don’t burn anything or him alone 👍
Bonus:
- If you could cook well (or can’t even it doesn’t matter!!) he would call some friends over to be like judges to judge your food but would always joke around to make you feel good about your cooking
- He would probably even stream it if you were comfortable to get more hyper and support from chat
- He wants you to be proud of your cooking especially if you want to be a baker or just be a master at cooking in general
Scenario:
Tommy smiles as you guys were both cooking together in his small apartment kitchen. He decided to play some music so went to grab a speaker. You were just finishing up the food before putting it in the oven as he started to come back. He then connected his phone and started to blast Greek tragedy making you look at him as you closed the oven. “Let’s dance around a bit as it cooks :)” he said, “it will help pass the time and make us more hungry.” In reality Tom Simons wanted to spend time with y/n and found it the perfect time. Y/n chuckles as they nodded their head and him and tommy started to dance around his small kitchen doing all sorts of moves together. The room as filed with the sound of the song and your laughters that echoed around. If that oven didn’t beep when it was done you would have ate cold food that night.

Onward Fan Art Shout Out - 14
Theme: Desserts! 🍰 🧁 🍪
It might not seem like it at first glance but even desserts can be art too!
Just about once every week or so when I look in the Onward tag on instagram there's usually a post in the mix that contains one or more of the following: frosting, sugar, chocolate, icing, candy...you name it!
But there are two other important things I see in those posts as well, and that is—talent and Onward!
Not only are the desserts I find so amazing (like for real some of them I could never make myself! they're so extreme!), but the thought, time, and dedication to make each of them in the first place shows me that Onward is not invisible and very much appreciated, that all these people who make desserts see how special it is! and actually choose to highlight what stood out about it to them!
So Quest Masters...let's give a hand and credit to all of these chefs and bakers, for crafting all this Onward culinary art!
and if any of us want an Onward-themed birthday sometime or dessert ideas for a future Onward anniversary or a potential fandom in-person get-together, hopefully these choices serve as great inspiration!
(also gonna sneak in this chef emoji—👩🏻‍🍳—next to any desserts that come with a tutorial on how to make it!)

Artists
titeyscake - this whole cake looks absolutely lovely! a very nice drawing of Ian and Barley! love the sparkly blue night sky aesthetic behind them and around the cake! and the 3D-ness of the wizard staff!
emmalou_cakes - this is one of those cakes where I wonder why you would want to eat it in the first place! like this is a pure sculpture! everything about this cake is so amazingly detailed and clean, especially guinevere! and the placement of the bros? awesome job!
cookingandcraftchick - the editable gelatinous cube! which I believe won't disintegrate your mouth, throat, stomach, or digestive system if you eat it lol, but ngl this would make a great Onward themed party snack because it speaks Onward specifically and a thrilling scene that was in it! 👩🏻‍🍳
sugar.by.jeanette - ok but to recreate Wilden's bottom half like this definitely takes a lot of time and effort! like this isn't your typical round or square cake! this cake has a lot of different parts to it to bake and put together! it blows me away!
macarons_by_agatha - fact: I love a good macaron every once in a while. and the purpley pink and blue color shades of these onward macarons are positively gorgeous! also the added shapes and images on them are very adorable too!
pnw_neen - it would be just a crime not to include cupcakes in this post! so here they are! it honestly might be the lighting but I love the sparkling and glittering effect the frosting of these cupcakes are giving off! it speaks magic! also it's blue you can't go wrong with that!
kooky.crumbsandcrafts - wow lots of 3 year old birthday desserts on this post apparently! yay for 3 year olds!! thank you for loving onward! it means so much! anyway...ahhhhh! these are beautifully colored and beautifully drawn cookies! and it's done repeatedly too! the re-drawing on each cookie is very nicely done!
cherrycakeco - okay...this recreation of the Lightfoot house is undeniably AMAZING, like this cake artist nailed down lots of great detail from Ian's window to the mushroom roof to even their yard! I wanna say you could easily confuse this as an actual 3D model! that's how remarkably real it looks! 👩🏻‍🍳
graysons.mom.makes.cakes - not to be confused with the pretzel wizard staff with the strawberry phoenix gem, this is a chocolate and buttercream cake with glass candy! the detail on the staff is amazing and the glass candy makes a really great gem texture!
kyscakes3 - the curse dragon!! they put the freakin CURSE DRAGON on this cake! the design and placement of it around the circular surface is so well done! and the colorful gems provide such a nice touch too! oh and the frosting looks absolutely yummy!

You think it's just a flat image on those cracks? No, it has a 3D effect to it. And it took me two days to figure out how to put everything together.
I am so proud of it...
( Yes, everything has changed here. The mask is an item convert. The animation is a re-rig of the skeleton from Midlander to Miqo'te. The clan marks are baked into the texture. Both eyes are different. There is so much going on but she's near 80% accurate for the RP my friend and I was doing... )

1/29-30/2024
monday-tuesday
moving is so depressing.
maybe just because of the exhausting nature of it, plus i didn't eat at all today really. i'm so exhausted, so i'm not really doing much music stuff rn, maybe i will after posting this, but idk, the song is okay-ish. it's just a lot of tiny dumb adjustments i feel like i need to keep making. trying to figure out, for instance, why it doesn't feel right, or perfect, or something.
the place is at least looking more like a house now. or a home. not a house, since it's an apartment.
i am addicted to trying to make this right, listening to a band now is giving me ideas, 1 is i try and pan harder, like basically all the way left and right but i leave some in the middle, and then maybe i do a send where it takes panned stuff and sends it to the center again on a delay by a few ms. that should be very quiet. then on the right guitar i bump up the body by a tiny bit. another thing is i need to get the distortion tighter. that might mean shaving off some frequencies pre distortion on both ends.
this is going well, at least.
the job called today, they told me i'm going in on thursday for orientation, which is good because that's after our last day to move. we are making good enough progress on moving at least, we have all the big furniture out of the place, as well as a lot of/ all the organizing stuff. now we just need to collect a lot of the tableware, cooking stuff, things of that nature, as well as a lot of clothes, but clothes shouldn't be too hard i think. idk, hope not.
i am excited to stop moving and have everything setup so i can start working out again, that's probably part of my malaise, i am not doing the things i want to do with my body. somehow lifting all of this stuff and doing all this physical labor/having to work this way makes me very dysphoric. it feels, even though it is not the case, that i am being treated a certain way, i know this is all normal it just reminds me of all the really stupid and pointless labor my stepdad used to make me do.
now i am just thinking about how best to clean these floors, they are sticky, so that means cleaning residue, and there's dust, so i need to hit all of it w/ soap and water first, which i have hit a good chunk with, and then maybe i'll do vinegar and maybe idk, like i was thinking of doing some vinegar + baking soda cleaning. but it could be too much. these floors are just so dumb, they are too textured, and strangely too, not like real wood, like linoleum. ugly stuff.
i think this is definitely the best this song has sounded, the panning is getting a little less hard but that's good, puts things in greater focus, directionally, i guess.
yayyyyy. the song is good now, mostly, bass in the middle section is off a bit and maybe i just automate that louder, i am waiting on that though, now i just kinda wanna mess with a sound i have in my head.
and i made a sound i like, and it's like, made a song happen. that's fun. that will be for another thing maybe but who knowssss. it might make it on. it could replace another short song i have even.
anyway it's late. this week i have work isn't that crazy.
and funny, i can hear a guy's car speaker thumping now. i hear a lot of stuff around here, i'm thinking maybe i can get away with vocals here idk. 1 hour a day, noonish, whenever i am free at that time. i should avoid screeching but that seems like the way to do it if necessary, regular vox should be okay ofc.
while i'm up, i'm trying to re establish regular habits, even in the middle of everything being hectic and stressful, i'm looking at fashion scans again, these are from vogue girl korea and they're streetsnaps from london it seems, around 07, they're so funny to me.
Tumblr media
look at his crazy pins... wtf. bejeweled guy. like it trips me up how 2d they look.
Tumblr media
the hat, the vest, the clip on bowtie, the motto: concentrate on career. he is probably a good drummer, i figure.
Tumblr media
the ecce homo shirt and untied shoes go crazy. i also love the rainbow necklace + the pins.
Tumblr media
and i just love this dress.
i also love the graphic design bit of the text bubble, making you imagine all of these people are walking up to you and saying this to you. seems like a fun thing you could play with, just putting total nonsense in a textbubble like that. maybe i should trace those bubbles, lol.
n e wayssss. my head is killing me, so i need to sleep, so
byebye!!!!!!!!!!!!

Development Project 02 Part 5
In Substance Painter, I decided to texture the main body, the sword, and the clothes separately. Later I realised that it would have been much easier to organise my textures if I had worked on them all in one Substance Painter file. While texturing the body and the head, I used a default skin material as the base and used hand painting on top of it.
For the props, cloth, and sword, I mostly used existing smart materials and just played with the settings and masks to create the effect I wanted. For the eyes, I sculpted and painted them using polypaint in ZBrush which I exported to Substance Painter for baking along with the normal map.

The initial render
Once I was satisfied with my textures I decided to import them into UE5 for lighting. After everything was imported, I created materials for each one of them. There were some problems with the texture of the cloth, so I used the low poly mesh from Substance Painter instead. I also realised that the scale for the sword was too small which caused problems in UE5 so I had to export the scaled version from Zbrush and convert the already done textures to a smart material so I could apply it to the scaled model. I noticed there were some changes I wanted to make so I shifted the colours of the cloth and re-imported the textures. For the lighting, I used the same scene I used for development one to make the process easier. I tweaked the light colours and positions and added some extra lighting to the scene. These are my final results.

Kitchen Makeovers in Sydney
Do you have an outdated kitchen that needs a facelift? A kitchen renovation can help you fall back in love with your home.
The key to a successful kitchen renovation is to keep your expectations realistic. There are many ways to make a dramatic change without breaking the bank.
Layout
A kitchen renovation will add a new level of beauty and functionality to your home. There are many designs that you can choose from depending on your needs and budget. You can opt for a Single Line layout, Island design or a Galley design. These are the most popular choices for Sydney home owners.
A cosmetic upgrade will keep your current kitchen makeovers in Sydney structure intact and include changes to the appearance such as updating benches/cabinetry, taps/fixtures and re-tiling. This is a cheaper option and can be completed in a short timeframe without changing your kitchen layout.
A high-end kitchen renovation will include a redesign of the layout of your kitchen including structural and electrical work. This type of reno can transform your kitchen into the heart of your home.
Cabinets
A kitchen makeover is a cheaper option than a full renovation as it keeps the structural structure of your kitchen intact. It involves updating benchtops/cabinetry, taps and fixtures with stylish high-quality materials and painting.
If your cabinets are functionally sound but just a bit dated, paint them yourself or use a cabinet spray-painting service (for a fraction of the cost of new doors). Or, get creative and remove the doors entirely and turn the cupboards into open shelving for an airy look.
Upgrade your old appliances to energy efficient models to lower utility bills and increase your home’s sustainability. You could also consider eco-friendly materials like bamboo and salvaged wood for your cabinets or flooring. You may also want to replace older cabinet hardware with modern pulls and knobs that are more streamlined.
Countertops
Often overlooked, countertops are a huge part of the kitchen. They can create a focal point and add personality to a room that is otherwise fairly bland. A backsplash can also add a pop of color and texture to the space.
To give this kitchen an uplift, designer Sarah Stacey created a neutral color palette that combines black and light wood cabinets. Black stone counters and an antique runner add contrast to the neutral scheme.
Changing your kitchen benchtop can be a cost-effective way to give your kitchen a makeover. By reshaping your countertop, you can save money by eliminating waste and reducing the need to purchase an entire new benchtop. This is also a great option if your benchtop is in good condition and only needs minor repairs.
Flooring
A kitchen makeover involves updating the appearance of your kitchen with stylish high-quality materials for benches/cabinetry, taps/fixtures and re-tiling. It also includes painting and is less costly than a renovation which may involve changing the layout of the kitchen or repositioning plumbing and electrical.
Ceramic tiles are a budget-friendly option that come in a variety of colours, sizes and patterns to suit any design style. They’re durable, resistant to moisture and stains, and easy to clean.
Timber floors add natural warmth and texture to a kitchen makeovers design. Choosing wood flooring that matches the wood featured in cabinetry and even shelving can create a cohesive look. However, it is important to remember that wood is prone to scratches and can be abrasive on delicate surfaces.
Lighting
Modern kitchens are used for everything from preparing meals to catching up over coffee and cocktails with friends. That means it’s critical to have the right mix of task and ambient lighting.
To ensure your cooking area is well-lit for tasks like chopping or baking, consider upgrading your ceiling lights. Downlights are a common choice, while LED strip lighting under cabinets is great for lighting up dark corners and making it easier to find things in your pantry.
Madsen says that Dan Kitchens designers typically only use two medium-sized pendant lights, as one can look lonely and three or more overpowers the room. He also advises choosing a light that suits your style, as this will help set the tone for the space and influence how people feel about it.

Introduction to Substance Painter
Discovering Substance Painter
after I learned about how to Properly UV unwrap I looked for a software that would allow me to texture my models that was better than Blender's Texture Paint, I looked around for a while before I found out about Adobe Substance Painter where UV unwrapped models could be imported as an FBX file to be baked into different maps that would allow for better texturing like adding details to crevasses and shadows. Excited to learn more I watched a few videos showcasing what substance painter was capable of, seeing how it could change a basic white shape and give it details of a real life object pushed me into getting substance painter. with my free adobe licence given by the university expiring I couldn't access substance painter, so I applied for a free trial for 30 days so that I could try it out, loading it up I was immediately overwhelmed with the controls as I have become very accustomed to Blender's and so did not know how to traverse the interface so I watched a beginners tutorial.
youtube
My first Substance Painter Object
watching the tutorial amazed me on how detailed the textures are and how they adapt to the UV's once they are baked to add rusty edges and stitching lines, to follow along with the video I made a table model in blender and exported it as an FBX file.
My table model in Blender
Tumblr media
the model was made to be low poly so it would be easier to unwrap, I then exported it into Substance painter where I encountered an issue involving back face culling as the table was partially see through due to the Normals of the model were flipped the wrong way.
Part of table with wrong face orientation in substance painter
Tumblr media
The fix was easy fortunately as all I had to do was go back to the model in blender, select those faces and flip their normals to make sure they are faces the right way. to avoid the issue happening again I started to check my models with the face orientation view in blender where faces in the correct direction appear Blue and faces in the wrong direction appear Red letting you know which faces to flip.
Face orientation view in Blender
Tumblr media
this view is a real time saver when I remember to use it which helps save me from the stress of having to go back into Blender after already exporting the model to fix something so avoidable, another way to see face orientation in Blender is by enabling back face culling in the texture settings. after fixing the simple issue I re-exported the mesh into Substance Painter where everything looked fine so I started to bake the mesh, baking the mesh creates several maps that will help when it comes to applying textures such as the Ambient Occlusion map which calculates the shadows in-between parts of the mesh, the maps can also calculate the edges of the mesh to add details like edge wear.
Ambient Occlusion map in substance painter
Tumblr media
With everything baked I could now add textures to the model, there was a few wood textures to choose from. I went for a darker wood texture and added some darker edge wear using a Black Mask and Generator, using the the black mask you can isolate an area to texture and with the generator you can add dirt, edge wear or rust.
Textured Result
Tumblr media
I am really pleased with the outcome of using Substance painter to texture the table as it looks professional as I wanted my textures to look from the start, the table is a very basic model though and so I wanted to try and texture something a little harder such as a character model.

I'm much in the same Mind
David Holz, founder of Midjourney Discord AI image bot, on how AI will transform the world and the everyday gaming experience.
The founder and CEO of Midjourney, David Holz, has some truly inspiring views around how AI image generation will transform the gaming industry. During the short time we spoke this week, I had to hold myself back from falling too deep into the AI rabbit hole. In the process, I discovered Holz's view on how this kind of tech will develop and how it's likely to benefit the gaming industry, as well as human creativity as a whole.
Holz believes that one day in the near future, "you'll be able to buy a console with a giant AI chip and all the games will be dreams."
It's a beautiful sentiment for sure, but it's the physics of current technology that's holding us back from exploring the full potential of AI in games. Right now these kinds of AI generators use excruciating amounts of graphical power (opens in new tab), and it's just not practical for the kind of utopian visions Holz and I have dreamed of.
He tells me that Midjourney's produces images (opens in new tab) using algorithms that "all run on the cloud, and they're running on very big GPUs-like $40,000 GPU servers … I think it's fair to say that it's the most compute-heavy consumer application that's ever existed."
That's a lot of energy and a great deal of money to sink into anything, but Holz truly believes in the benefits of the technology Midjourney is pioneering.
He tells me it's already being used as a way of self soothing after a traumatic event. "Some of them are actually using the AI in a purely therapeutic process. And it's hard to understand that, but you'll see weird images and you'll ask them 'why are you doing Maltese dogs in heaven?' And they'll say 'it's because my dogs just died.' And you're like 'oh my god, are you okay?'"
Of course, there's always that looming fear around AI replacing humans, but Holz has a much more positive outlook.
"We're not trying to build God, we're trying to amplify the imaginative powers of the human species," he says.
He makes it clear it's not about designing tech to replace people, it's about the "proliferation of the visual means to express yourself. It just means that people will become more visual in our culture, and more appreciative of those kinds of things. And there'll be more opportunity around that than there was before."
The barriers between consuming something and creating something fall away
I'm much in the same mind, and having come from a game art and design background I can certainly see its potential in idea generation for concept artists.
"Before you see video games being generated on the fly, you're gonna see the technologies being used for every step of the asset generation pipeline, to increase the creativity of the content, the quality of the content, and the amount of the content," says Holz. "...you're gonna have game studios using AI to help bake out lots of assets, textures, terrain, layouts and characters. discord server Even if it takes ten minutes to make a high quality character, that's still much faster than it would take during the normal production process.
"One would hope that in ten years time there's no longer static content because everything is generated on the fly. So in theory, the barriers between consuming something and creating something fall away, and it becomes like liquid imagination flowing around the room.
Best gaming monitor (opens in new tab): Pixel-perfect panels for your PC Best high refresh rate monitor (opens in new tab): Screaming quick screens Best 4K monitor for gaming (opens in new tab): When only high-res will do Best 4K TV for gaming (opens in new tab): Big-screen 4K PC gaming
"Everything between now and then is a combination of increasing the quality, being able to do things like 3D, making things faster, making things higher resolution, and having smaller and smaller chips doing more and more stuff."
So it seems we just have to wait for the technology to catch up. And it is catching up, fast. There are, albeit less powerful, AI image generators that run on consumer hardware (opens in new tab), and it's only a matter of time before these algorithms are even more efficient and involved, so we can get down to generating entire triple A games as we play.
Screw sports, Katie would rather watch Intel, AMD and Nvidia go at it. Having been obsessed with computers and graphics for three long decades, she took Game Art and Design up to Masters level at uni, and has been demystifying tech and science-rather sarcastically-for two years since. She can be found admiring AI advancements, scrambling for scintillating Raspberry Pi projects, preaching cybersecurity awareness, sighing over semiconductors, and gawping at the latest GPU upgrades. She's been heading the PCG Steam Deck content hike, while waiting patiently for her chance to upload her consciousness into the cloud.

ADHD is a blessing and a curse. It is horrible, yet outstanding.
It's like a pie, okay? (Everything baked, in a beautiful pie🎶)
It's DELICIOUS. Fucking amazing! Best pie you've ever eaten.
But the texture is shit. It's repulsive; makes you gag; you cannot fucking TOUCH it.
And it hurts you not to eat it because it is so good!
No matter how much it hurts you not to eat it, despite it being a rejuvenating, renewing, re-lifing pie because that's how fucking good it tastes: you cannot eat it.
That is what ADHD feels like. (For me at least)
