Hey there, industry 3D animator here (television in vancouver)- you mentioned being on projects you didn't care about, how did you muscle through them?
hi fellow vancouver animator! if you're currently on a project that you don't care for then i'm very sorry, i know how exhausting it can be. especially if you feel like you don't have any other options. i've worked on a lot of projects, both tv and feature, that i didn't care for at varying degrees and it's never easy to make your way through them if you don't enjoy what you're doing. at one point it got so bad for me that i questioned if animation was even something that i wanted to continue doing because i was just churning out animation for a preschool show (which a lot of people enjoy and is very legit and stable work! it just wasn't for me). i ended up taking extra long lunch breaks and afternoon walks every day just to Not Work lol. it can be very tough. that was the only job i ever quit. luckily the next project i moved to reignited the animation fire in me and reminded me why i enjoy it
a few pieces of advice come to mind
make sure you take time for You. i know a lot of vancouver studios don't pay overtime; if they're not paying you then you don't owe them your time. decide what you have to do to make your work Good Enough to get you through your day and go home at 6
touch grass, and i mean this in a very genuine way lol. go for walks, explore new places, but mostly just get away from screens for a bit haha
keep your job options open. apply for jobs that start before your contract is up because you can leave that contract at any time, it's okay, you won't get blacklisted for it (as long as you give them two weeks notice). if it sucks, hit da bricks
if you have the means, try to work on saving up some money to take time off between projects. i know i'm speaking from a place of privilege on this one, but a couple months off can cure any level of burnout
work on your own personal projects! this can be hard to do if you're creatively burnt out though, i had to stop animating in my free time because animation was already taking up too much of my creative energy at work. i started doing a lot of writing while working on atsv and it was very refreshing to focus on something that was still creative but a completely different skill from animation
try to find the opportunity to learn something. even on projects that i didn't like, i still got something out of them. make your workflow more efficient by thinking about where you spend the most time and how you can make it faster (posing hands? create a hand pose library. counter animating the arms/head/spine? play with the rotation parenting on the rig. need a camera to do a big smooth sweeping arc? use a pivot point). think about common notes that you're given and set your scenes up that'll be easier to change if you get those notes. bonus, this will help you with #1 on this list and being a faster animator is always highly valued, even in feature anim where quota is sometimes one shot per... month

HAVE U SEEN THAT AS IT WAS BTS VIDEO😵‍💫 THE PART WITH THE BABY WAS 100% DAD!HARRY
Tumblr media
AS IT WAS BEHIND THE SCENES
dad!harry x reader
MASTERLIST
PSA: dorthy is a fan!
-
"Dorthy did you know Harry posted behind the scenes of As It Was?"
Just that sentence had Dorthy sprinting to her laptop. Immediately after opening the YouTube website she sees a video with Y/N and Harry on the thumbnail. Right away she clicks on it but when an add pops up she groans.
After a full 30 seconds Dorthy finally hears the voice of no other than Harry Styles.
"Are you having fun?!"
"Be careful!" Y/N laughs watching Harry and Beau dance on the spinning floor. Inez who was barley seven months old, was in her arms, sending a gummy smile to her father and brother.
Harry waves his hand at Y/N and Inez making Beau follow his actions. Both of Harry and Beau looked at Inez and Y/N with so much adoration, it made Dorthy let out an awe.
She still remembers when Y/N and Harry were first seen together. Paparazzi photos came out of them both on a beach in Malibu. Of course every girl went literally insane. And now, Y/N and Harry have children together.
It blew Dorthy’s mind the way she sort of watched Harry and Y/N grow together, every fan kind of did.
"He called me and asked 'Can we put Beau’s voice in one of the songs love?'." Y/N tells the director, mocking her fiancé’s English accent. Tanu, the director lets out a loud laugh which gets the attention of Beau and Harry who were still playing on the rotation floor.
"I know you’re talking about me!" Harry shouts making Y/N and Tanu laugh even harder. The camera stopped on Harry watching Y/N giggle. He was caught watching her with so much love in his eyes.
"He’s so in love with her." Dorthy whispers, observing the scene in front of her.
The next clip made a smile form on Dorthy’s face.
Y/N and Harry were both rolling on the floor together giggling, looking like teenagers. Harry had his arm tightly wrapped around Y/N’s lower back (closer to her ass) seemingly not wanting to let her go. You could tell their love was so strong.
Dorthy didn’t understand why some people thought their relationship was still a PR stunt. Countless times Harry had sued paparazzi companies for taking pictures of his family, yelled at fans when they would be overbearing and even defended Y/N on social media.
But still, there would be that one person thinking Y/N and Harry had children for publicity.
"It’s like rolling down a hill!" Harry says helping Y/N stand up. Right as her two feet are planted on the ground Harry picks her up and throws her over his shoulder.
"Harry! I swear to god!" Y/N shrieks making Harry let out a childish giggle.
"I love you too baby." Harry responds, tapping his fingers onto the back of her thighs. Y/N tried to stay serious but once those words came out of his mouth she smiled.
Dorthy grinned watching her laptop like an idiot. The interaction made her giddy. If her mom were to walk in and see her daughter freaking out while watching a Harry Styles video, it wasn’t out of the blue, it was a normal thing for her to do (since middle school).
"They are so cute." Dorthy sighs out, leaning her cheek against her palm.
The following scene took her breathe away. Literally.
Harry was holding his daughter with the biggest smile ever. He tried to help Inez stand but she just fell back into him. In the corner of the frame Y/N was seen crouching with Beau in her arms.
"You stood yesterday but can’t stand today?" Harry mumbles making Y/N laugh. He continues to encourage her to stand but she just keeps dropping back into his arms with a gummy smile.
"She loves testing you." Y/N tells Harry who immediately grins.
"Just like you love to do darling."
And with that the video ended.
"Can’t they be anymore fucking perfect." Dorthy whispers letting out a breath of air she didn’t know she was holding in.

I don't think I ever posted about this dream I had a few months back that was straight-up a creepypasta story conjured by my subconscious. It's nothing too wild but it's stuck with me. It went like this:
In the dream, it was like 10+ years ago when my little sister was still little and I lived in the house I lived in at that time. We were watching some cartoon on Nickelodeon and towards the end there was a little banner at the bottom that read "Up Next: Worried & Anxious" and I was like, hm, what a strange name for a show and decided to check it out.
So the show comes on and it's a sort of puppet/muppet style show like Sesame Street or Bear in the Big Blue House. It opens in a room with bright colored walls and cartoonishly proportioned furniture. The back wall is a big sliding glass door and outside is a colorful drawing of a sunny day. Bright, generically happy music is playing
There were two kids who looked maybe 12 years old standing in the middle of the room with identical big mascot-type heads that looked like cartoon child heads with curly hair. The heads looked like they were made of stone (kind of jagged) but painted so they were colorful. For the mouth was a cut out for the kids' in the costumes faces. The kids' faces were off-center like they were trying to pull the mascot heads off but weren't able to and they both looked distressed.
The camera focuses on one of them and a voiceover (the sort of classic cartoon little boy obviously voiced by an adult woman voice) says "I'm Worried!" and then the camera switches to the other kid and a different voiceover (noticably the same VA slightly changing her voice) says "And I'm Anxious!"
Frantic discordant music starts playing and the camera zooms to look out the sliding glass door and it cuts to another scene where it's like, the foreground is grass with a dirt path and it's rotating backward while the sunny sky background scrolls up to give the illusion of motion. A garishly red, pointy puppet is jerkily wobbling as though it's walking up the road. It kind of looked like a jinjo from Banjo-Kazooie with a bunch of red springs sticking out of its body (like... have you ever stretched out a metal Slinky? The springs looked kind of like pieces of stretched metal slinkys)
The camera slowly zooms on the puppet and I get the feeling the puppet is approaching the house and that that is really really bad.
And then I woke up so I have no idea what would've happened if the red puppet ever made it to the house.
Anyway, I had this dream months ago but I still think about it. I kinda think it would make for a neat analog horror short

covergirl | OJ Haywood x black! Reader | October prompts !
Tumblr media
A/N: Thank you for your patience! I didn’t forget about this! Now that we’re in my favorite season of the year I decided to add something else to the mix and include this in my October prompts for 2022! It’s a short one but hopefully a good one.
+ Prompt: 6. “Is it just me or did it just get really cold in here?”
┏━━━✦❘༻༺❘✦━━━┓ ┏━━━✦❘༻༺❘✦
attention was never something you turned away from. You loved it. It was always all eyes on you, you know, like Tupac’s fine ass once said. Ask any of your siblings and cousins growing up, you were the main one who oozed star quality. Sorry. So you took that to your advantage, gaining tumblr fame quite quickly in your tumblr teen girl era and that later brought you to high-end modeling.
The only time your photo shoots were early was if you were overseas and it always ended up eventful. You weren’t much of a morning person but you adjusted once you were fully up. Plus you didn’t enjoy wasting anyone’s time; especially your own. Now that you were back in California, your agents knew to only schedule you for early afternoon shoots. Not to mention that you’ve grown to have insomnia once your career began to take off and a hint of sleep apnea when your body allowed you to disconnect for a few hours.
So sure sleep was a huge question mark when it not only came to modeling but you loved having “me time,” when you weren’t out with your friends.
Letting out a small yawn that you covered with a few of your fingertips, you glanced up at the ceiling for a moment longer as the makeup artist patted the setting powder underneath your eyes then gave you your space.
“Here you go!” A voice chirped shortly afterwards, “looks like I’m right on time too.”
Continuing staring upwards as you lounged on a faux fur multi-colored stool, you spotted a curly haired girl in baggy clothing as she held out a iced tan tea to you. “Heard you enjoy that London fog tea shit, it’s giving clay but to each their own I guess!”
Taking it from the familiar face you smiled around the straw before you sipped your beverage, “Emerald Haywood. Thanks for this, I didn’t know you worked behind the scenes?”
“Oh please, with a face like this? And charisma like mine?! You already know I’m in front of the camera just like your pretty self.” The brown skinned girl winked while you smirked.
“My apologies sis, I should have known.” You stretched, putting a arch in your back while Emerald shamelessly checked you out in your outfit, “what are you doing here?”
“I’m wherever the money is. Just ask your cousin,” Em raised one arm in the air, leaning over slightly as her hips rotated before she continued, “OJ and I had to keep the business running when daddy passed. After our asses got fired from a failure of a previous shoot, I did some research and found out somebody else needed horses. And you so happened to be here.”
“Riiight,” you pointed, “and here I was thinking you gained some sense and became obsessed with me instead of messing around with my cousin.”
Em quirked up a brow, “don’t tempt me with a good time…either way I talked to my therapist and we both agreed that it’s time for me to focus on myself.”
You hummed at that, not saying what you thought on it. You knew Em for a couple of months now, ever since your cousin, who happened to work at a strip club, began bringing em around. They were casual in the beginning—it seemed since your cousin had a issue when it came to dating; either the girls or non-binaries she dated got jealous over her profession/no longer felt comfortable with her line of work, turned out abusive, or decided to start sleeping with their therapist right after putting their relationship on a break.
Nonetheless you kept your mouth shut since your cousin said she would figure it out. So you respected it and you actually liked hanging out with Emerald Haywood. Your energies meshed well together and you hung around the same group of people. She was cool in your eyes minus the whole sleeping with your therapist two days after she called it quits with your cousin…but hey it was none of your business.
“Okay everyone, let’s clean up and get the horse in for the final shots of the day! I want to leave and get fucked up like the rest of you!” The photographer announced.
Pushing off the stool, you continued downing your tea as the assistants on the set removed the stool and large potted flowers out of the way. “That’s great, em. I’m sure it’ll all be worth it in the end.”
“You see the vision.” Em snapped her fingers, “I had no doubt you’d get it.”
“Of course,” you shrugged as another assistant came over to you, suddenly picking at your roots gently before placing a metallic cow-girl hat over your head, “self-love is the best love and whoever you decide to share that with and they understand? It’s even better.”
One of the assistants, Stella, you believed her name was, held out her hand to take the leftover drink before you lightly turned to see a dark skinned man catering to a white horse.
“I think I just found that someone.” You whispered, beginning to strut over to the man and your supposed prop for hopefully the next thirty minutes.
Em titled her head to the side in confusion as she watched you make your way over to her brother. It only took her a second to realize what was going on as you gently began stroking ghost’s fur who swayed his tail in response.
“Who’s the lucky guy?” You asked.
OJ peeked up and over from his side next to the horse and moved to stand in front of; to continue caressing it’s nose. He barely glanced at you as he responded, “this is ghost.”
“I’m not talking about the ghost, handsome.” Your voice was as sultry and light as you patted the horse, arm going up to rest along it’s spine comfortably.
OJ blinked, “oh. I’m just the guy with the horses.”
“No. There’s always more than what meets the eye,” you smiled, “I’m Odette and you are?”
“I’m aware,” OJ had his attention back on the white horse continuing to provide comfort, “your manager told us you go by Detty, that you’re gonna be on your Beyoncé shit and gave us a whole run down of what not to do in your presence. Which I understand boundaries…I just want to let you know that these horses—
“Deserve the same amount of respect as any decent human being,” you said, “I get it. I know a thing or two about horses and bulls. It was my grandfather’s thing. Sure he loved his bulls more than horses but trust me, I won’t hurt him. I’m capable of being gentle.”
That’s when OJ looked at you to see you slightly biting on the corner of your lip. He didn’t know much about you coming into this gig but his sister did. All OJ needed to know was the time, to provide reassurance for whichever horse he thought would be best for this, and the price. He wanted to bring lucky but this photoshoot requires a white horse for whatever reason and Ghost could be a bit finicky at anything lately. He was the last one Otis Sr. Was on when he was attacked so OJ knew that Ghost was going through a bit of PTSD at the moment.
“OJ! Get out the way and let the girl do her thang! Ghost also knows what to do!” Em called out to OJ, who cautiously stepped back as the assistants came over with another stool to help you onto ghost.
However OJ still found himself lingering close by while Em chatted away with others on set. OJ watched you as you carried on so elegantly, in your flowy attire as you seemed to be chatting with the horse here and there every time you shifted to a set poses. It did not take the photographer long to get multiple shots and finally the winning one.
“I think we got it!”
Claps started to surround until you asked; now sitting up from ghost, “you think or do you know? I still think outside for this scene would be better.”
“It’s not the look the magazine was looking for babe. We got the floral backdrop and your gorgeous face, that’s all we need.” The photographer answered, “that’s a wrap everybody!”
OJ watched as you rolled your eyes then shrugged. He moved over back to ghost as the stool was placed down again for you. Carefully you climbed down and moved to stand by ghost’s head. You caressed him once more, “thanks for your time, buddy.”
Everyone slowly began to clear out as you flicked your eyes over to OJ who was actually staring at you this time, “and thank you for lending us ghost…OJ, was it?”
“Mhm,” he dipped his head, “you’re welcome.”
Quickly learning that he wasn’t a man of much words you breathed out a small laugh. Normally most guys that couldn’t hold a conversation you lost interest. However there was something about OJ that made you have a little bit of time.
“What’s the O stand for in your name?”
“…Otis.”
“Odette and Otis.” You let it roll off your tongue, “Look at us sounding like somebodies grandparents. Doesn’t that have a nice ring to it?”
“Sure.”
“I think we could do something big with that.”
“Yeah? Like be somebodies grandparents?” He snorted, picking up that you were flirting with him.
“That and much more.” Your voice lowered as you held OJ’s stare.
The stare down was broken off once the lights suddenly shut off on you two. It only took seconds for a blur of white to fly by your sight followed with the clunking of Ghost’s hooves.
“Aye! Ghost!” OJ watched as the ghost ran around in circles in distress, the brimmed man trying his best to click his tongue to get the horses’ attention.
A side door suddenly opened, giving Ghost the opportunity to rush through it.
“Whoa! What’s wrong with ‘im?” Em asked, shades lowered as she glanced away from her phone.
OJ huffed as he began jogging over to the door which clicked behind the horse. Sighing you began peeling off the boots, wiggling your feet as you let out a yawn again.
“Did he get your number yet? ‘Cause we need to go and get some real food. What y’all had here ain’t enough to feed a damn fish.” Em muttered to you as you made your way over to her.
Before you could respond you listened to the rattling of the door handle that OJ pressed on.
It didn’t appear to be budging.
“The doors stuck.” OJ bluntly stated.
“You mean to tell me you don’t know how to open doors? You just push it!”
“I’m doin’ that!” OJ yelled back, “i’m guessing this is one of those doors that locks behind you.”
Em grimaced after attempting to get it open herself, “ohhh.”
Carrying the boots in one hand and lightly rubbing on your arms with the other, you began looking around the building. It felt much smaller with the lights out and not as comforting.
“Is it just me or did it just get really cold in here?” You asked, eyes wide as your eyes darted around the room.
Footsteps moved to stand beside you. Em tested your realization blowing into the air and found a puff of cloud went towards the air. It was on the tip of her tongue to just brush it off, assuming that the air temperatures increased when no one was around.
However…something felt like it was.
The three of you were quiet, picking up on the sound of something almost spluttering from above. Instantly you were holding your breath and you weren’t sure why as all three pairs of eyes shot up to the ceiling above their heads.
“What the hell—
“I think we should move. Now.” OJ ordered, not liking how that sounded and given what he previously witnessed with shit falling out of the sky with his own father, he knew this didn’t feel or sound right either.
Briefly he touched your elbow, guiding you and Em away from the center of the room to the bathroom door. All three of you crouched down in the doorway, peering out and wondering what that noise was. It sounded as if something was leaning, almost like a electrical tower about to give way to the ground. Not long after, objects came crashing through the ceiling but the most noticeable one…happened to be a traffic light pole along with a camera attached.
The object appeared to be damp from what you could tell in the dark surrounded by other miscellaneous items. Cautiously the three of you made your way by the fallen item with Em kicking at it and OJ peering up at the newfound hole in the ceiling.
“That’s strange.” You spoke, not knowing what to make of this.
Em nodded, “uh huh! Shit’s just falling out the sky for fun lately? This is honestly giving me the heebie jeebies.”
“Ghost.” OJ muttered, “he had to have known…he wouldn’t of just ran off like that if he hadn’t.”
“OJ…let’s not go there.”
“What?” You asked watching as the two shared words with their eyes, “hey, I’m here too! Whatever you’re thinking you can just say it.”
“…it’s nothing,” OJ decided, his eyes meeting yours. He could tell you didn’t believe that and something inside of him wanted to tell you about his dad but he wasn’t fully sure himself. It was a feeling that told him to get everyone out of dodge, “we should find a way out of here—
That’s when that same jammed door slowly creaked open, automatically making you take a step back, hand latching out to yank OJ back by his shirt.
Em already had her taser out, pulled from her crochet cross-body bag. The three of you waited for someone to peek in at you but after at least a minute, no one did.
“Yeah, I don’t know about y’all. But I’m gettin’ the fuck up outta here before these rich condescending folks think we did this mess so!” em chucked up the deuces before she jogged over to the door, crouching down as she had her taser ready.
Once she disappeared behind the door she yelled out to you two, “we’re good! I’ll be in the car, OJ!”
Puffing out a breath, you quickly let go of OJ’s bunched up shirt and returned your hand back to rub at the goosebumps on your forearm.
“I’ll count this as my weirdest day on set and I’ve had a lot of those.” You commented.
OJ hummed as he slowly turned to face you.
“I think it’s about to get weirder around here.” OJ mumbled glancing at the traffic light that fell through the sky, “no I won’t elaborate but I think we should all be careful.”
“Are you saying we just walked into the twilight zone?” You tried to joke but it also fell flat to you.
“I don’t think that was just some miracle.”
“What—never mind you don’t seem like you want to completely share your thoughts with me right now. Which I guess is fine, maybe it aligns with the whole introverted horse-loving tall dark and handsome thing you got going for yourself.” You ranted, “but this isn’t how I imagined the end of the shoot going either so we should head out. I feel like we’re being watched.”
“Okay, covergirl.” OJ nudged his head towards the door, waiting for you to fall into step beside him.
Both of you cautiously stepped outside to California’s humid air, sunny and as if nothing just occurred. Up ahead you could see Em waiting in the passenger side as you and OJ stood in the parking lot.
“On the bright side…I told you so.”
“Told me what, Odette?”
Keeping your arms folded you smiled, “that we’ll be apart of something much bigger together.”
Spinning you began walking backwards digging into your boot to grab your car keys, “you’re not getting rid of your future wife just yet. You and I both sense that by now don’t we? I’ll see you soon won’t I, Otis?”
OJ wasn’t sure how to answer this as he slowly trailed after you. He just shared a experience that was a bit strange with you and here you were trying to turn this into some possible dating adventure? He didn’t know how to take you so he just tipped the brim of his hat which made you scoff out a laugh, fully turning to your expensive car.
He moved to get into his own truck after he took his eyes off the sway of your hips, beside his sister and started the engine, just as the camera on the fallen traffic light flashed in the dark room.

Minecraft: Story Mode Blender Rig - Tips and Tricks #2
Hey everyone, and welcome to the second edition of Minecraft: Story Mode Blender Rig - Tips and Tricks! This post will showcase some tricks I've learned using ThePlayaJam765's Minecraft Story Mode Blender Rig Pack he kindly compiled which can be found here. The last Minecraft: Story Mode Blender Rig - Tips and Tricks post can be found here. Be sure to have the latest version of Blender installed, too! Enough talk, let's begin.
Loading up a rig into Blender, (I used Season 2 Lukas for this example, but other characters work nearly identically) let's create a basic pose.
Click on the armature (the strange black skeleton inside your character of choice), click on the top left drop down box and that says "object mode" enter "pose mode". Now lets make a simple pose of the character! I recommend using the previous post to help move elbows and knees
Tumblr media
Wait, hold on! How'd we get the arms and legs in the exact same position as each other. It's simple: on the top of your 3D viewport display, find a butterfly icon with an X. Click the X so it turns blue.
Tumblr media
Now try rotating an arm. Nice, the other arm is mirrored just like that! Next, how'd we get the elbow and knee bones aligned correctly with the arm and leg bones so it doesn't look like Lukas broke multiple bones in his body? Here's a picture of Lukas who may have some broken bones in his body.
Tumblr media
In simple terms, we have to changed the rotation orientation from "Default" to "Normal". Go to the top of the 3D viewport display, click the dropdown box next to the word "Orientation" and click "Normal". Be sure to change the rotation tool, and you can do the same thing for the movement tool by repeating the same process while the move tool is equipped. Great, but that expression is... scary. What if I want my character screaming, talking, or smiling? Luckily, there's a simple fix. Go to the sidebar on the far right of your screen. It should have "Scene Collection" under it. Open up the collection titled, well, "Collection" and go open your armature.
Tumblr media
There is a lot of objects that have strange names and icons. Don't worry! To get rid of the default mouth expression, uncheck the eye and camera button and scroll down. These icons both mean "viewport" and "render" respectively. Experiment with which mouth expression you want for your render by checking and unchecking with the eye icon. Once you find your desired expression, check the camera icon as well.
Tumblr media
Nice, now your character has much more life! Anyway, that about wraps it up for this post. Next time, we'll be experimenting with changing the texture for your character, importing multiple characters into a scene, and much more! If you have any questions, contact me and I will do my best to help. Thanks for reading, and thanks to ThePlayaJam for compiling the rig pack!

Overtake! Episode 1: The Man Who Races
Tumblr media
I really like cars, so of course I'd like racing. I heard of the concept for Overtake! and was immediately on board, then I saw the previews and was a bit more apprehensive. But, I watched today's episode, and I'm very surprised. Lots of great stuff to chat about. If you were on the fence like me though, I'd say to watch it.
So, obviously, the racing. That's what I'm here for. It's what I was concerned about, and for very little reason it seems as the execution on it is impressively good.
Working with CGI you need to understand the flexibility you're given to convey that three dimensional space. Troyca grasps that very quickly and uses all the tricks in the book to make things look great through this stretch.
The use obstructions like the fence to mask detail, as well as shots that aim to follow the subject so that they don't appear perfectly still in the scene. Following that up they make use of "camera shake". That is the movements are non-linear, they overextend on their panning or rotation and have to come back in slightly. It's a simple detail but important to add to the believability. The depth of field/focus shifts also help with that a great deal. They even mix in 2D shots of the characters driving for extra effect.
I think the only thing I really say is somewhat subpar is the visual information with the cars. Initial D/MF Ghost understood the assignment and added visual effects to denote the pace of the vehicles. Not that they feel slow, but that they feel too clean in some shots.
Anyways, the 3D racing is incredibly good and features some really great work throughout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, as an episode it's not all about racing (though a lot of it is), and not all of it is 3D. There's a lot of impressive work on the 2D front as well, and the direction very strong throughout the episode. Lots of use of space and perspective that provides very strong and standout scenes and layouts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personally speaking, I think I got a little tripped up by the 3D aspect of this series, so I wasn't expecting the level of quality apparent in the 2D animation, which was a considerable mistake. It's not balls to the wall 24/7 or anything, but there's a lot of character acting that really has effort placed into it.
Tumblr media
That's enough about the production though, let's start into story. I think... it's okay. I don't have anything that really grabs me by the collar right away, but I can feel the potential. Koya's afraid of taking pictures of people due to a traumatic experience of his past. He can't find a reason to further explore his passion, and Haruka is the catalyst for that passion. It's somewhat straightforward, but aside from a sort of grating exposure to Koya's trauma, I can sense a good bit of potential.
Also surprisingly, Overtake! fits in a sizeable chunk of information regarding how formula racing works. It's not too heavy, nor does it take ages to explain. It might make the first race seem a little convenient, but it does a good job of covering quite a bit of information both with exposition and just plain old exposure. The idea of using Koya as a vehicle for viewers to understand the sport was a good idea.
All in all, it was a good series to cap off this Sunday with. Lots of energy and excitement, and pretty clear dedication to the sport of formula racing. Intense action and pace as well as emotional beats and character driven stories being set up. I smell quite a bit of potential for this series as a racing anime, which is great to see considering how dry the genre has been for so long now.

Spirited Away: Live Stage
I watched the Spirited Away Live Stage in theaters on Sunday AND Thursday because there’s two sets of casts for some of the major characters~ just wanted to write my thoughts down. This is me trying to be organized but gets a bit rambly later.
Prior to watching: I already learned about some of the cast. TBH, the only names I knew right away were Hashimoto Kanna and Kamishiraishi Mone--both of them playing Chihiro on separate shows. I’ll just refer to them as Show A/Cast A (Hashimoto) and Show B/Cast B (Kamishiraishi) when talking about them~ Another name was Paku Romi who was part of Cast B. I was familiar with both actresses from different movies: Hashimoto as Kagura in Gintama and also Kamishiraishi as Kana in Chihayafuru (and voice of Mitsuha in Your Name) so I really wanted to watch both shows because I was really excited to see how both actresses would interpret the role of Chihiro.
Thoughts: I love the use of the projections and stage mechanisms that they used to depict movement, and changing of scenes. I think a lot of it was very very very cleverly used.
+Stage projections: I especially loved the part where they projected the Japanese title 「 千と千尋の神隠し 」(literal translation is something like “Sen and Chihiro’s Spiriting Away”) on screen, and they took the kanji 千 from both Sen and Chihiro to form the little torii ⛩ (gate commonly seen in shinto shrines that separate the mundane and sacred worlds) that they drive right through (in the movie they pass by one that’s just leaning there), kind of to represent the moment when the Ogino family entered a different realm.
+Stage mechanisms: The very obvious ones was how they just rotate some big parts to show different scenes, like Kamaji’s boiler room, Chihiro’s room, the inside/outside of the bathhouse, Yubaba’s office, etc. I liked how they made use of ladders, walkways, and doors/entrances. The whole train scene was amazing too~
+Stage hands: So many things were definitely made possible thanks to all the stage hands!!! It’s interesting that instead of black, they went for a brownish color, but I think it fits very well. I know some people might feel a little distracted by them, but I learned to really ignore them lol. It’s thanks to them that we have Kamaji’s arms/hands, the really cool scene of Haku grabbing Chihiro and running through/past many doors (that one part where they purposely did a “slow-mo” moment during their run when running past the pigs was really cool), the elevator scene, as well as the movement for the soot sprites, mouse-Bo, fly-bird, dragon Haku, and many other things. Oh yeah, and major props to them for the part where they lifted Chihiro and Haku up in the final scene where they reveal Haku’s name.
+Funny oopsies caught: Because it’s a stage play, not everything is full-proof and completely “perfect.” Although I tried to ignore the stage hands, there were some moments that made me giggle a bit. One of the earlier ones (Show A) was the scene where Chihiro is eating the onigiri from Haku and the camera just happened to show Chihiro handing off the onigiri to one of the tree stage-hands to hold onto. Another funny moment was (Show B) where a hurt Haku turns back into his human form, and again, the camera just so happened to show an angle where Haku’s actor sneaks onto the set and tries to quickly hide into the little doorway in Kamaji’s boiler where he waits to “roll out” when his dragon form disperses.
+Unique moments: There were def things that I noticed were unique and great specifically for the live stage play. I loved all the extra singing that was added. I absolutely love the sung version of 神々さま with the whole bathhouse cast. I know this song actually exists but every now and then I wonder if I dreamed that a sung version of this song exists because there’s no full version online. My Googling skills only helped me find the lyrics and clip of it. I also liked that they expanded the scene of everyone cheering/dancing when they freed the River Spirit, and for the play, they had everyone dance and Chihiro was dancing along with them. I loved that they added a (new?? pretty sure it is) theme song for No Face/Kaonashi, and there’s always that same musical motif that plays when he appears. NGL I felt like Kaonashi was extra creepy/scary in the live stage play >< There’s also a song that Kamaji sings and a sung version for The Sixth Station with the ladies which I found were quite nice additions too. Definitely appreciate all the music that was added.
I actually teared up both times during that scene when Chihiro goes back to her parents in the beginning and sees that they got turned into pigs and she was screaming in a panick as they were getting hit and those strange things started to appear around her. I think they were amazing at depicting how scary of a situation it is when a kid finds themselves in such a situation and seeing all these strange apparitions too. I personally felt that the parting scene for Haku and Chihiro more sad and bittersweet in the live stage version, especially when Haku is telling Chihiro to not look back, and in the live stage play, you can see that initial hesitation she had. My favorite added tidbit was the part at the very end where you see Haku standing at the entry of the tunnel. THERE IS HOPE IN THEIR PROMISE!!
+Additional thoughts: I really loved Hashimoto Kanna’s depiction of Chihiro. I really think she was the perfect Chihiro. There was that one scene where she was just about to cry when eating the onigiri and I think the camera angle was perfect because you see her eyes getting shiny just as she starts crying and I was just kinda wow’ed by that (angle wasn’t quite the same for Show B at that scene). I was kinda on the fence on how I would feel about seeing Show B with Kamishiraishi Mone, but she exceeded my expectations~! I still love Hashimoto’s Kanna more though. As for Haku, I’m a bit partial towards Cast B’s Haku, but I appreciated that Cast A’s Haku appeared to be the better dancer??? I liked that he had a little dance thing in the play. I was also really excited to see Paku Romi in Show B, but tbh I got a BIIIIIT distracted by her voice because I can’t help but go “kyaaa it’s Paku Romi!!” Oh yeah, small thing but I loved that they had Chihiro trying to read her new name and went “Chi” and Yubaba was like “CHIGAU (wrong!) it’s Sen!”--it made me giggle.
Overall, I think the stage play did such an amazing job at being true to the original movie, and even expanding a little more on some scenes. I was skimming through the original movie and soundtrack while writing this, so there were some things that made me go “wow, they actually were able to include this and this and this into the stage play”??!” They even copied some of the same guests/patrons of the bathhouse, but I was a bit disappointed that Ootori-sama was only mentioned but didn’t actually appear in the play (unless I was blind both times)?? Not sure what else I missed out on but will edit this post if I remember something important later~
tl;dr Spirited Away Live Stage is an excellent adaptation for the original movie. 100 out of 10 recommended! Also Blu-ray has been announced for July as well as return/rerun of the play in August with both Hashimoto and Kamishiraishi reprising their roles!! So exciting!!

Checked out 2 different f n a f inspired porn games. Night shift at Fazclaire's Nightclub and Fap Nights at Frenni's Night Club. Both are full 3d environments with 3d models of porn parodies of the cast both with the concept that these animatronics are for sexual services during normal hours but are too dangerous at night.
But the tones of both are different. Frenni's is more humorous. Reminds me of the sex kitten sim dates in having irrelevant references. But due to that reminder I don't find it bad. One unlock is an animatronic dr livesly that you can use as a distraction by having him wait in place and on command distract the others by playing that walk meme song he was associated with. Phone guy is an alcoholic who threatens you with pay deductions and an ass blasting.
Frenni's club is a compact club where you are randomly each attempt tasked to clean up semen in the bathroom, put away co workers bong, stock the bar with wine, restock the condom vending machine.
Fazclaire is a more down to earth one with a straightforward phone and a more threatening environment. The club is a sprawling place to run around in. Aside from finding items hidden around the place, you must flip circuit brakers in 3 different rooms in time or the whole power cuts off, including your flashlight. It's a binding darkness. Frenni's has a golden frenni sometimes trip the power, but at least you still have a flashlight working.
The sex scenes in both are about equal. Frenni's has full camera rotation including pov while fazclaire seems to just be pov though I need to play more fazclaire.

Bazaar - Hiding from Daipai
I dearly love each and every Bazaar photo shoot fig set I have - there is no limit to the number I would buy! So imagine my delight when a clever fig maker decided to immortalize this (technically) off-camera moment!
The inspiration comes from a video taken by a very enterprising daipai. A daipai, if you're not familiar with the term - and I wasn't either, until this fandom - is basically paparazzi for hire. They will follow celebrities to get pictures of them to sell, and also will sell their picture-taking services to fan sites.
Here, they were sneaking shots of Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun. Gong Jun is famously eagle eyed for catching daipai and fan photographers, wherever they are hidden, but this time Zhehan spots the photographer first, since he is facing towards them. Gong Jun is posing for the camera in the exact opposite direction.
This fades out at the end, but I've seen a longer version of this at one point too. Junjun wasn't very happy with this daipai - he looked away very pointedly. It's not easy being a celebrity, no matter what anyone says!
Tumblr media
I wasn't sure if the balcony railing would be sent in a different box or how they would do that, but it was sized to fit in one of the boxes.
Tumblr media
Here they are! Zhehan's fan isn't removable - it came that way. Neither is Junjun's, for that matter.
Tumblr media
Paparazzi certainly aren't loved for the way they invade people's privacy, so the truly epic frown on Junjun's face is fantastic. You know I like smiling figs, but this is just so perfect here. I love it!
Tumblr media
I love, love, love the blue streak in Zhehan's hair. His whole Bazaar hair style, for that matter. And Zhehan did too, given that he set a picture from the shoot as his Instagram pic. I also love the moon symbol on Junjun's shirt, which echos the complementary star on Zhehan's. You can't see the star yet, but you will as we rotate around!
Tumblr media
Neither of them would stand on their own at all. I got a bunch of figs in this ocean shipment, and I swear a good half of them don't stand! The fig standees are pretty essential, really.
Tumblr media
Ahaha, it's been a while, but you can see we are back to the typical Zhehan and Gong Jun fig proportions. Zhehan curvy, Junjun slim.
Tumblr media
Love Zhehan's gold studded belt here!
Tumblr media
Zhehan's hair is really my favorite in this style.
Tumblr media
Look at it, the ponytail is so cute!
Tumblr media
There's Zhehan's star on his chest! It's a little hard to see, but it's there.
The choice to put Junjun in fingerless gloves was masterful. I know they're a bit hard to see in the video, but there's these big chunky buckles at the wrist which are very cool. Junjun's hands are very elegant in the black leather - very long and beautiful, and the heavy buckles both highlight and complement how they look.
Tumblr media
And we're back around, this time with the railing! Junjun sure looks a little like he's contemplating smacking someone in the head with the fan, doesn't he?
As you can see here, the fig stands fit perfectly underneath it with no problem at all. Looks a little silly, but there's nothing to be done at all about it, since they won't stand up otherwise.
Well. I mean, I know exactly what I'm going to do about it, which is to order a long and thin single standee, and stick them both to it, and have it slightly more hidden behind the rail.
Tumblr media
Junjun makes me laugh - his pose with the fan really does look like he's thinking some thoughts!
Tumblr media
Every angle of that ponytail is adorable!
Tumblr media
As you saw from the earlier unboxing photo, the set came with a bonus add-on of a magnet. My file cabinet is half full on one side now from all my magnets!
Tumblr media
The delightful matching artwork on the boxes. I get plain white boxes so much with the resin figs that it's always nice to get the PVC ones for the fancier boxes!
Material: PVC
Fig Count: 431
Scene Count: 29 (I don't think a balcony rail counts)
Rating: Two fans are better than one!

Heavenly Delusion #2 - Two Confessions
Tumblr media
Screenplay: Makoto Fukami Storyboard: Itsuki Tsuchigami Episode Director: Kai Shibata Animation Director: Tooru Iwazawa, Yuuko Yoshida, Itsuki Tsuchigami, Haruo Okuno, Mayu Gushiken, Kai Shibata
I'm two weeks late as Saturdays just aren't very good days for me in terms of watching anime in general. I was planning on catching up and just writing about episode 3, but this episode was too amazing not to write about genuinely. I'm not going to mince words about it; this episode just kicked ass. It's easily one of my favorite episodes of the year so far. The first half featured some of the best lighting I've seen in anime for a dark scene like this. It's scary, thrilling, and makes you feel as if you're in a horror video game, not knowing when the monster could attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cinematic aspect ratio change contributed greatly to the change in tension and threat level of the situation and made your eyes solely focused on the screen. I'm not truly familiar with Kai Shibata or Itsuki Tsuchigami, but both of them came together to create an amazing action scene that is complemented by Waki's beautiful and in-depth composition.
Waki's control over the usage of light is genuinely mind-bogglingly great, from creating a lurking sense of danger amidst the darkness to the flashy impact sparks of a monster attacking.
There are so many things to talk about just in this whole scene against the Hiruko. I haven't even mentioned the camera rotation usage. The slow turn of the camera creates a feeling of something creeping toward you with your eyes being naturally drawn to a pitch black background and is a great showcase of anticipation. On the other hand, when the Hiruko attacks, faster movements of the camera emphasize the imminent danger.
The sound design was great for the entire episode, as it has been throughout the series. The quiet ambiance during the fight scene increased the creep level to a maximum, and the impact sounds of the Hiruko attacking remained sharp without being overpowering or unfitting for the scene. The silence when the landlady is sliced by who she thinks is her son is also well-executed, keeping within the established ambiance. It's quick, and the suddenness of it creates a more impactful moment than any loud swinging sound could. However, the great sound design is not to this Hiruko scene. In a simple scene where one of the kids at the facility is climbing up a pillar and falls, the sound of the fall is not exaggerated. Instead, it's a brutal and blunt sound that truly makes you worry for the kid. It's just one of the simple scenes that shows you the consistency of this show in almost every element.
As a manga reader, I already know what will happen to the story. Therefore, I don't have much to say in terms of the mystery setup and questions they have developed in this episode because I don't want to spoil anybody. However, as a manga reader, I'm more than satisfied with what we have gotten in this adaptation so far. It's been a thoroughly amazing experience and has even forced the sloth that is me to write up on this episode, which I was planning to skip and just do a write-up for episode 3. But most importantly, I hope you guys are enjoying it too. If you're curious about my thoughts on the pacing, it's completely fine with me. I've heard some people think it's going a bit too fast, but I don't think so. The way the story is told feels natural to me, and compared to many other anime adaptations, it's near perfect, which is a huge credit to Makoto Fukami. I didn't even really have space to talk about the second half which is simply me trying to tell you to just go watch and please experience it yourself.

Thoughts on the weirdest, most balls to the wall Castlevania game? :P
Tumblr media
this is a serious game about revenge
Curse of Darkness is a marked improvement on almost everything in Lament of Innocence, but still not quite enough.
The plot is simple at first: three years after C3 (I love when games have connections to each other like this), in an Europe ravaged by Dracula’s curse, Hector is on a quest to avenge the death of his girlfriend (of course): he used to be a general of Dracula’s army, having the important role of Devil Forgemaster, but he grew tired of the senseless death and turned his back on the Lord: as revenge, his former friend Isaac accused his girlfriend of being a witch. There's more revealed in the tie-in comic, but it's not strictly necessary. This is a good premise for me. I like both Hector and Isaac: Hector for being a former villain and his aggressive demeanor, and Isaac because... well, look at him <3 also Trevor is thrown into the mix, because we need a Belmont in our Castlevania. (no Sypha or Grant, surprisingly. Alucard was napping so he’s justified, I guess, but really, Trevor’s OP wife decided to stay home?)
The rest of the plot is more.. random? There’s a woman who looks like the spitting image of Rosaly and she’s a witch and she’s also Isaac’s sister and of course she gets together with Hector at the end, there’s a honest-to-goodness time lord involved which at the end of the day does nothing except give you a boss battle, then a priest was Death all along (and, really? Zead, Death?)...
Also, while the dubbing is okay, with special shout out to Crispin Freeman and Lian O'Brien chewing the scene as Hector and Isaac (Julia OTOH sounds like she's reading the lines for the first time), the translation is pretty ridiculous, full of "t'is" and trying too hard to sound old-fashioned. But it's charming :P
Also also, I will never let go of the scene where the highly flamboyant Isaac impales Trevor from behind, very very close to him, and kisses his hair as the poor guy is grunting in pain (bur surprisingly lucid). I cannot make this up. What kind of game am I playing.
(sadly this scene marks the end of Trevor being present or even mentioned in the game. It’s like they wanted to get him out of the way... and that’s how they chose to do that. okay)
Onto the gameplay!
There have been many improvements. While you can't rotate the camera, it rotates with you and you can adjust it with L1, and that’s really nice. Warp rooms are finally back, and smartly placed too, but you can also use warp tickets if necessary. There’s more incentive in fighting enemies because you level up, and Hector himself moves in a snappier way than Leon (although he seems to slide all over the place). Enemies display a level, which tells you how easily you can beat them. There are even some small but appreciated improvements, like smoother transitions between doors, and a pointer that appears when you’re near a save room or a warp room, in case you don’t recognize the door.
They didn’t fix how slow you move, though, and this time it feels even worse because corridors are much longer and much emptier. The jump is also even stiffer than in LoI, reminding me of Amy’s in Sonic ‘06: its only purpose is to go higher, to attack airborne enemies or more rarely to climb on ledges. Not that you need it much, but I was hoping for a form of faster movement...
Some other nitpickings because I can: I’m also not a big fan of the automatic lock on as soon as you guard. No weapon in the game justifies a lock on feature, and it’s just disorienting. Hitting enemies in the air is a little awkward, because the depth perception is still a problem. Also, they nerfed the dodge mechanic, and you need much stricter timing to be invincible lol.
You can find material to fuse with your weapons, which is similar to DoS but far, far easier. The weapons are all useful, with different properties: personally, while swords are by far the best weapons, I even had a kick using the knuckles, which are so fast that they compensate for their lower strength. There are so many weapons that the subweapons are for once absent: the hearts are used for the Innocent Devil system.
The ID system is... peculiar, and ngl at first I was overwhelmed by the 5 pages or so of information, but it’s not bad. These little critters help you in various ways, from healing you, to fighting with you, to letting you glide... The biggest draw is evolving the IDs, thanks to the differently colored EVO Crystals that you collect. This allows for much more replayability, gives you a reason to experiment with different weapons, and it’s another incentive to fighting enemies even when not forced.
Tumblr media
The possibilities are nearly endless!
The structure of the game is different. Instead of a bunch of “dungeons” to explore in whatever order you like, the progression is more linear: you go from the Abandoned Castle, to the Baljhet Mountains, to the Garibaldi Temple, to the Mortvia Aqueduct, etc. Sometimes, you have to backtrack to get to the next area (you need to find the Brute Force power in the Temple to open the iron gate in the Mountains that lead to the Aqueduct), but overall, it’s basically “get from point A to point B”.
Overall, this definitely feels like a game where combat was placed on a much higher priority than platforming or exploration: fighting enemies is fun, even cathartic, but the game is even more fond of locking you in “defeat all enemies to proceed” rooms than LoI; and as for the maps... I’m torn. Let’s use Baljhet Mountains as an example:
Tumblr media
Look how big it is. You can even spot some backtracking moments, secrets to be found once you have the right power, in true Metroidvania fashion. But it’s far, far more linear than even Lament of Innocence, which had more branching paths: it just looks more complex because of the winding path. The branching paths here seem to be here more for the sake of making 100%ing the maps more laborious. There are also far less secrets, one breaking wall per area more or less. The equivalent of that is doors that can only be opened by a special ID power - a vine door that has to be burned down, big gaps to be crossed by an evolution of the Bird ID, a switch that can only be pressed by a particular evolution of the Fairy ID... it’s not possible to 100% the game on your first try unless you’re lucky, but it does give you yet another incentive to experiment with your IDs.
The lack of platforming is especially egregious in the Eneomaos Machine Tower. The clock tower has always been hard as hell, with dangerous gears and annoying Medusa Heads. Here? Just some tough enemies and some gears to hit in order to move. There is a room that is full of gears and conveyor belts, and I thought I had to jump on them, but my Bird ID kept slamming into invisible walls. I had to hit one gear, and a cutscene would open the wall for me. I don't know why I got so irritated near the end of the game, but yeah, the devs went from an extreme to the other.
Even the complexity of the maps is irregular. Some maps are really labyrinthine, like the Garibaldi Temple...
Tumblr media
The Eneomaos Machine Tower is linear, but has a cool ascending motif...
Tumblr media
... but the Aiolon Ruins are just a straight line.
Tumblr media
Infinite Corridor should have been the subtitle of the entire game :\ no wonder the game has a fetish for chairs, poor hector much have constantly sore feet
Dracula’s Castle, the endgame, is by far the biggest area in the game (not counting the optional areas), with a whopping 10 floors. This is not a good thing: it’s basically going up, down and all around fighting annoyingly strong enemies, in rather boring-looking rooms. No secrets to find, no gimmicks whatsoever. Barely an improvement over the Pagoda in LoI.
Also wow is this game stingy with money. By the third area I still had around 200 coins - that’s enough to buy one healing potion. Only near the end of the game I could rack up more than 500 coins, and mainly through selling Devil Shards. Also, suddenly putting a cap on healing potions seems like an arbitrary way to make the game harder.
The bosses are... a bit of a step down? I didn’t find most of them as well designed as the ones in LoI, they’re just tanky. St. Germain and Trevor were really fun though, challenging until you understand their rhythm (also the former caught me off guard with his third life bar lmao). Dracula's second form gave me some trouble, but more due to his obscene HP :P
Interestingly, accessing the bonus boss here is much easier than in LoI. In the previous game, you had to find an item in the very last area, after some annoying platforming. Here? You only need to backtrack to Garibaldi Temple after finding the Devil ID. I don’t think you even get anything aside from the satisfaction of beating a hard boss.
Visually, it’s about the same as LoI, but less elegant. The areas can be either murky and uninteresting (the "nature" areas and Dracula's Castle) or atmospheric (Garibaldi's Temple, Infinite Corridor). Cordova Town is probably the most interesting area in a Castlevania game so far: I would have never expected a zombie town! The cutscenes are also a step up compared to LoI’s: I especially liked the choreography of the Trevor vs. Isaac fight.
Musically, well, it’s Michiru Yamane taking advantage of real instruments, what can I say? :V The OST overall ditches LoI's atmospheric style, having more in common with SoTN’s style. It’s far rockier than the usual too:
Abandoned Castle is one hell of an introduction for our revenge-thirsty protagonist
Followers of Darkness -The First- is the equivalent of the Werehog battle theme: I hate it because it plays so much, but I can’t deny that it’s a badass theme
Garibaldi Temple is your typical Yamane classical goodness. It reminds me a lot of The Prayer of a Tragic Queen and Wood Carving Partitia.
Cordova Town, much like the area itself, is nothing like a Castlevania piece, preferring clean guitars and a gloomy tone; I like how it brings back the synth heard in Abandoned Castle
Eneomaos Machine Tower fits how high up you ascend
Dracula’s Castle screams “endgame”, and it’s a constant crescendo of tension
Followers of Darkness -The Third- is just a good, pumping boss theme
Young Nobleman of Madness and its shredding guitars are perfect for the unhinged Isaac; it seems to be a companion piece for Festival of Servants
Legendary Belmont is scary, and truly conveys how out of his depth Hector isagainst the man who defeated Dracula.
also, this exists. I wish I can convey in text the face I made when I stumbled into this room :V
So, in summary: CoD feels a little like Metroid 2, in that I can't say that it's Castlevania in name only, but it's so different that it barely belongs in the same genre. It reminds me of the first part of OoE, all combat, little to no exploration. But with OoE, I could at least see a timid experiment in bringing the Metroidvania genre closer to the Classicvania one, but here? Much like LoI, it seems to be a consequence of Igarashi’s lack of experience with 3D games.
I had fun with this game, but not for gameplay reasons. CoD is charming: the sheer amount of stuff you can craft, including absurd anachronistic weapons, the complexity of the ID system, the hammy performances, Isaac, the many many out-of-place chairs... it’s engaging! It has that ShTH-esque over-the-topness that I find so endearing :P The game itself, though? Ehhh. It’s not bad, certainly much better than LoI, but it feels like there’s something missing. Still, "okay" seems to be a great accomplishment for a 3D Castlevania game.

Patricia, Fabian and Victor for the ask game
OH THIS IS GREAT
Tumblr media
i love patricia <3
"war crimes" is a bit harsh but if she wanted to i'd let her commit war crimes :)
the "specific other characters" are joy (speaks for itself), eddie (speaks for itself), fabian (insane that they're foils by the end of the show), alfie (the scene in the laundry room in s1 is so good that i'm one hyperfocus day away from writing an essay about it), and nina + kt (for pretty much the same reason? and the aforementioned foiling relationship between fabian and patricia being through their relationships to these people/how they reflect their relationships to someone they care about deeply that left abruptly/how poorly they deal with that lol)
by "taking her from the narrative" i mean change how the sinners work and give her satisfying character development in 3b instead of being functionally annihilated to further the development of other characters xx
Tumblr media
I LOVE FABIAN <3
relationship to specific other characters refers to nina (literally writing a fic about this), joy (literally wrote an essay about this), patricia (see above), amber (i cant explain this concretely theres just something There that i love), victor (if fabian and patricia are foils, then fabian and victor are literally the same person and it makes me insane), and eddie and kt (forever thinking about the crypt scene)
only person who can do their fucking job may be a bit too generous but like. relatively speaking. i think it's fair
he's not the most interesting character in canon. he's the most interesting character in my head where i add all of the interesting parts :) (he is interesting in the show but when you're being compared to patricia/joy/jerome...it's simply not fair)
in that same vein: the taking him from the narrative is somewhat for the same reason as patricia but also because i want to damage him more elsewhere (and like, fix him later. i guess.)
that does NOT mean i want to kill him with a gun. i want to put him in the microwave for twenty minutes and watch him rotate. very important distinction
Tumblr media
i SCREAMED when i saw victor
when i say "doesn't do it for me out of the narrative" i mean he IS the narrative. without it the core elements of his camp nature cease to exist and i lose interest. what even is the point
specific other characters: sarah/rufus (self explanatory), fabian (foiling), joy (implication of her being his favorite/i mean, The Whole Child Abduction Thing), nina (the season 2 finale w his father's ring...Help), and vera (not because it's enjoyable to watch them flirt but more that a) he never noticed her giving Evil Looks to the Invisible Camera and b) she single-handedly turned him from intimidating antagonist to bumbling guy in the way 95% of the time in s2 which was the best choice they made with victor's character after s1 imo)
i want to kill him with a gun but more because it'd be funny, not because i want him super dead (that would mean my source of comedy is gone). kill him but he survives somehow so he could die again as a surprise twist/punchline would be ideal, thus both affectionate and derogatory
the "flavor" is not one that tastes good, but it sure is Stored in Him

ok ok ok so like
this post has been rotating in my brain for weeks and i’m finally gonna make it bc FUCK but this song gives me geraskier feels ok???
so just to start off, right off the bat
blankets off and windows open to the pouring cold / in a room so full of lies and lives of you i’ll never know
kaer morhen vibes anyone? angsty tho so post s2 for sure. those halls are full of memories of geralt’s life he never thought it was important to share with jaskier, aren’t they? brothers he never heard of, hurts he never got the chance to soothe, stories he never heard and inside jokes he never shared, because why would he? they aren’t friends, right?
but you hold me as though i’m addicted / and you hold me as though you’re alone
this just hurts my heart thinking about that hug in the jail cell. how jaskier clearly tries to be angry but can’t hold it, he gives in, because he *is* addicted, actually, no matter how geralt makes him feel. and there’s something about how the one moment of true affection, of genuine care we see from geralt, (“i missed you too.”) without any grumbling or posturing, comes when they’re totally alone, and no one can see him being vulnerable. he isn’t willing to show that same affection to jaskier where people can see, at least not that they show on camera.
gloves are off, our faults more naked than they’ve ever been
*chanting deliriously* mountain scene mountain scene mountain scene
in my foolish years i dreamt i’d make of you a better man
toss a coin, need i say more?
cos you don’t seem to know / where you’re going / and you can’t understand / where we’ve been
idk this line just gives me feelings about geralt refusing his destiny over and over and over until it’s too late for him to plan or do anything in a safe or healthy way, while everyone around him can see he’s headed right for where he swears he’ll never go, he’s just gonna get there angry and alone and unprepared
i came to you a child / and loved you like you were a man
i mean this one is obvious, but also i get so fucking emotional thinking about how geralt thinks of himself as so distinctly separate from humanity, and everyone he’s ever met sees him as a monster, and jaskier never, for even one single second, sees him as anything but a man
there were lights, and lust, and guilt, and damage / they could never understand / how i loved you again / in an instant / and i’ll leave you if i / ever can
geralt hurt him so badly, and rejected him over and over, but also i think it’s naive to assume jaskier didn’t hurt him back just because we don’t see any clear examples on screen. when you love someone for that many years, you’re going to hurt each other. you’re going to fuck up. if you’re lucky, you’ll figure out how to apologize and make up and compromise and find a way to live together, and if you’re not, the hurt keeps compounding until something breaks. jaskier keeps going back, and geralt keeps not ditching him, and i think it’s more than fair to say they both have their share of guilt and more than their share of damage. and maybe continuing that relationship isn’t a choice everyone would make, but they do, because it makes sense to them if even it doesn’t to everyone else.
but we see in that jail cell that jaskier absolutely does love him again instantly, and we can also see from his demeanor on the way to cintra that even if he’s forgiven geralt, he hasn’t forgotten. that hurt is still there. that apology didn’t make it go away, and maybe jaskier realizes that maybe he should go, even if he knows he won’t. even if he doesn’t want to.
i will love you again / i will love you until / the day i can’t
i mean the chorus definitely has “i will keep coming back even though you hurt me until you finally push too far and send me away for good” s2 vibes but also there’s big Mortal Jaskier energy here which is physically painful to me, so.
ANYWAY i recently rediscovered this song i bought in 2013 after i saw the singer perform with the seattle rock orchestra and got hit with all the Blorbo Feels, so now y’all have to suffer with me. enjoy!

hello nickle i am going to scream into ur imbox abt SAM
so. SAM. I was going back through my notes and realized i said it was supposed to be in first person, but I hate writing in first person for WIPS. easy to change, right? except most of if not all the subplot depend on being able to explore the characters' feelings and thoughts in extreme detail and i'm not sure if i'd be able to do that the way I want with a third person pov so I am screaming and crying over this
then there's the rotation of the pov. it goes in this order: morowa, harper, jisung, ivy, vale, and kaya. this is driving me mad because by following that order, some scenes end up told by the wrong person. i reviewed the outline three time and wrote out shorter outlines trying out different orders, but nothing works as well as the one i have currently even with its issues. i cant just say fuck all and not have an order, because the same thing will happen but worse and also everything will be disorganized and thats terrible. can u tell ive never had a rotating pov with so many characters. can u.
in short, i am considering quitting writing and running away to be a sheep keeper in iceland. good day!
ok, so, i am someone who wants to Solve Problems so i'm gonna give this a go
Problem one: you hate first person, but you want to be able to do deep and intense emotional exploration.
This is the harder problem, I think, but I've had it before. My advice is, genuinely, to consider the story as if you were still writing it in first person but then write it out in third person. You will need a very, very close camera; when you're writing, imagine the story literally through the character's eyes.
Everything they're thinking, everything they're sensing, what they would notice, how they would specifically interpret this situation. If you get those details in, you'll still have a very, very close POV, which should work. I also advice to cut out as many words as you can like "felt" and "thought", instead just stating what they're thinking and feeling, to make it feel closer, like a less extreme version of Deep POV.
Problem two: the revolving cast.
guess what! i just had this problem with GFS. And..... uh.... i said "fuck it" and abandoned order. sort of.
I created a general order by dividing my estimated chapter count and listing how many chapters I want each character to have at least or at most. I expect about 43 chapters in GFW1 and have 6 narrators; Rowan has no more than 3, I want Hope and Bea to both have 6, and I want Corey, Oliver, and Angel to have 8. That's 38, and gives me about 4 more chapters of wiggle room. Then I just make sure I won't be putting, say, 5 Hope chapters in a row.
I suggest you figure out roughly how much time you want each character to have, then go through your outline chapter-by-chapter and figure out which 1-3 characters would be best for each (they're in the right spot, they know something the others don't, their mindset will make it interesting, their emotional investment is different, their arc aligns with what's happening, whatever). Then you can go through again and assign each chapter one of those 1-3 characters, keeping in mind that you're not straying too far from your original rough plan of how much time each will get. It's different from a revolving in order cast but still gives the feeling of structure to how the POV works out.
anyway whoops i went into like. writing advice voice there. but yeah i hope your Troubles and Sorrows are perhaps quelled a bit? if not, tell me what's Not Working and i'll try to look at it from a different angle
(i say this because i think i might have a better chance of figuring it out than you, since you're so close to it and i'm further. kinda like how beta readers find plotholes that the writer missed)

Development post #5
With the end of the project getting dangerously close, it was time to knuckle down and get an MVP (minimum viable product.)
I still did not have the asset for the player's car, which took longer to retrieve due to my partner's technical issues with photoshop at home. Coming back to college meant i was able to get the last of the assets, assisting in an MVP.
Tumblr media
For the player model, I chucked the car sprite and Frankie on top of each other for now due to the time left.
Tumblr media
When the car was inserted into the viewport, it needed resizing and rotating for reasons I'm not aware of. It took a couple minutes but it was finally the correct size and my partner wanted the camera to be tilted upwards a little bit more to meet the perspective of the car. Here's a look of it ingame:
Tumblr media
Next up was to make the car change sprite when the player moved it left or right.
Tumblr media
To begin with I created a function that gave the sprite required when the necessary input was pressed with the compare float and set sprites. On the right arrow, the right facing sprite was selected, on the left arrow, the left facing sprite was selected, and the forward used the front facing car asset seen in the screenshots above.
Tumblr media
This function was then added onto the custom pawn movement the player had so whenever the pawn went left, the left sprite played etc. After the sprites were sorted, it was time to attempt to get the tire audio working as I had tried this out before but I quickly gave up.
Tumblr media
The branch here allows the code to understand if the movement is 0 or not, with no movement being true, no audio would be played and the code would then reset and check again. If movement was true, then a random pitch between the values 0.9 and 1.2 would be selected.
Tumblr media
The audio was also put into a timeline so that the audio would decrease, allowing the audio to feel like they loop more seamlessly. The tire audio is then used as the target for a volume multiplier that increases the volume when the player turns to the left or right a lot. Here are the turning sprites:

By the time this was done my teammate had an idea. He wanted to see if I was able to create a sun to use in the background to add even more atmosphere to the desert the player drives through.
I created a new actor called 'SUN' which only consisted of a sphere. Looking back on it now, there is not much reason as to why it is an actor as I've realised it will still work perfectly fine if it was just an object with a custom material.
Tumblr media
I then created a custom material for the sun. Luckily I have used glowing materials quite a lot throughout my projects so I was able to do this fairly quickly.
Tumblr media
I set the colour to be an orangey yellow, matching the temperature of the level to give it a yellow hue. I then multiplied the colour by 1250 which is the value me and my teammate settled on after experimenting. Here's a screenshot of when the sun was too bright:
Tumblr media
This is what the sun looked like after I was done manipulating the glow values. Once this material was complete, I slapped it onto the actor and manipulated its size so that it mimicked the sun at the end of the road.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After putting it in it was a bit surprising to see how well it had turned out. And eventually we were able to see how it was in game.
Tumblr media
We were both very pleased with how this turned out and it will stay. It may have been a last minute addition but I can't imagine the game without it now. Here's a gif of when it was too fast:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, the sun being an actor proved useful in the end. Despite how cool it looked, it was a bit boring for the sun to stay in one place, so I made it slowly move over time. This code here has added the sphere into the scene which is now being rotated on the Y axis at the value of 0.0001. This now means the sun is able to slowly arise as the game progresses. I did experiment with the Y value as if it was too fast then there would be no sun for half of the level, so it was made just slow enough that it would move, but also remain on the screen for the duration of the level.
Tumblr media
With a majority of the necessary work done for the MVP, my teammate was asking if I was able to add a couple things that have some priority but aren't necessarily needed. One of these things was enemy variation which mainly involved him drawing the different cars, he believed that we should do this so that the enemies were not the same every time and to add a slight element of surprise to the player.
Tumblr media
I started by duplicating the original zombie car actor so that the other two would retain the important code of being able to be destroyed and target the player. Before the assets were sent to me, the cars were different coloured rectangles. I then went into the zombie car spawner actor and created a new array for the actors to go into.
Tumblr media
In the original car's code, the spawn actor of class was just set to the default car, so I plugged in the new variable so that there was more than one actor that was capable of spawning.
Tumblr media
To ensure randomisation, I attached a random integer in range, allowing me to set two numbers and the float draws a number within the range between these numbers. I was able to recall all of my randomisation work from before which is why I was able to do this so quickly. After the 'GET' node had the information of the zomvariations variable, it was then set as the class of the spawn actor, allowing all three classes to be spawned in.
Tumblr media
With the police zombie car, we decided it would be best to include siren sound effects. To make the audio not sound like it was in your head, we used an attenuation so that the sirens got louder the closer the car got to you. I was luckily able to transfer my skills over from the previous project where I did a lot of audio work to achieve this swiftly.
youtube
Here's how our conversation went.
Tumblr media
The taxi zombie car does not have any sound effects as we believed there would be too much going on in the level and to prevent overwhelming the player, the taxi is silent.
Tumblr media
The sprites had paper 2d texture applied before they were turned into actual sprites to ensure the quality was sublime.
Tumblr media
With the enemy cars being able to ram into you from any direction, it didn't make sense for Frankie to be facing forwards when shooting backwards. In the first level of Da'Car, Frankie would change the direction he was facing according to whereabouts the mouse was placed on the screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having done this previously, it seemed a lot easier to gain an understanding of how it was achievable. In the car player pawn there was already a custom event for the mouse lock which was used for previous mouse tracking, we could just use this for the front and back facing sprites.
Tumblr media
The mouse lock only sets the x axis which only records the up and down movements of the mouse, so the greater than is able to distinguish the top and bottom half of the screen whilst also getting the world location for specifically the x axis. The select then helps distinguish between whether or not the front or back sprite is displayed, regarding the position of the mouse. Once the mouse passes a certain threshold on screen, it finally sets the correct sprite for the direction the player is shooting.
