Name: Melon Bug (again)
Debut: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
(I wanted to write some more about Melon Bug, and I liked the original post just fine, so this post will be a continuation since that one was so short!)
An isopod! Oh, joyous day! It may not look like one at all with that big ol’ nose, but when it’s rolled up, there is no mistaking it! Here’s a very fun fact: when an isopod curls into a ball, it’s called conglobation! Use that in your everyday lives.
Tumblr media
Melon Bug technically isn’t an enemy, you know the drill, weird Mario friends, that usual thing. When curled up, Yoshi can lick them up and spit them out, defeating enemies they hit! Could this be the first instance of weaponized isopods?
The Player's Guide says "These feisty hoppers transform from bug to melon and back again." Feisty? They're only slightly more feisty than a real pill bug! And a real pill bug has a negative Feistiness Level. I don't think whoever wrote this has played the game, since Melon Bug is harmless! I also don't think they know about real pill bugs, because they clearly can't cogitate conglobation. A bug transforming into a melon? How unrealistic! What do they think this is, Trip World?
Tumblr media
I think "Melon Bug" is a very good name. An incredible name, even! When Melon Bug curls up, it, obviously, resembles a melon, what with both being round with stripes. While real pill bugs don't really have "stripes", their tergites (armor plates) do give a "lined" appearance. If you ask me, Melon Bug could be a good name even for real terrestrial isopods!
What do YOU call pill bugs? I've always called them roly-polies, but they have so many wacky names. Woodlouse? Yeah sure, a bug that lives under wood, why not! Butchy-boy? I don't get it, but it's funny. Then there are all the names comparing them to pigs which I just do not get, but groundhogs also get compared to pigs in common names a lot, so maybe people just don't know pigs as well as they like to think. And THEN! England gave them a bunch of CHEESE-related names. What is happening over there? Are British people somehow making cheese from isopod secretions? Why would you call this creature a CHEESELOG? That's a straight up food! I kind of love this name for them for being so ridiculous! Anyway, my point with all this is that Melon Bug would be more actually fitting than the majority of the common names these have been given, but sometimes it is more fun to be unfitting!
Isn't it weird how Melon Bug's art doesn't quite look like the sprite? Such bulging eyes in the art, but little dots in-game... well, we now know the reason!
Tumblr media
Remember Super Donkey, from the 2020 gigaleak? I feel like it's been far too forgotten for how interesting it is! Anyway, as I mentioned when talking about that game, Melon Bug was originally designed for it! It seems like the Yoshi's Island art was drawn before they decided to shrink its sclerae, and lighten its colors, but after they decided to give it little red shoes.
If you grew up calling roly-polies something else, or if you know fun names from other languages, I would love to hear them! And I hope you love and appreciate these creatures! They are so common and easy to observe, so rather than get jaded to their presence, celebrate them, and you will be able to find delight whenever you turn over a log!

How do you feel about Milsiril? Like what do you think of her interactions between the canaries, her goals, her intentions and morality? I keep seeing people with mixed feelings about her, some saying she's just toxic or morally grey or doing bad but with good intentions or that she's just a mentally ill and literally so much more, also with the comic about Otta calling Milsiril love for her children/Kabru as just love for a pet, I always saw people take it at face value and say yes, Milsiril did love them more as pets instead of children, did she take up raising/adopting non-elf children because she felt like none of them could ridicule her like the elves did because they didn't know what an elf was supposed to be like (and also because they were children) or did she inherently view them as less? I mean the canaries and I'm pretty sure almost all of the cast in dungeon meshi have some sort perspective on different races especially because how they were taught about them, i just think it was interesting to finally see someone interpret it as Otta just misinterpreting Milsiril, I'm just really interested in her, i think shes neat, sorry for the rant!
Ooh, well to preface this, I hadn't really realized Milsiril was such a controversial character before my last post, I kinda live under a rock. She's really not a character I had given much thought besides what I wrote there before it, but I can do my best to express what I have thought since with sources for it. I'm not sure what order to go thru so I'll just go by manga appearances and then extras, this will probably be quite a long post
Tumblr media
This is the first time she shows up in the manga, c h55, Kabru is wondering about what future they might have if the elves take them because of the ancient magic, he thinks about Milsiril as a get out of jail card, and mentions "There's a chance they would make us become permanent resident of the elven lands." with the image of Milsiril holding him. I don't think that means she would be the one to not let them leave, since this would be an issue of them being criminals, it does set up that Milsiril is quite overprotective tho, with Kabru's reaction to her teary hug. (rest is under a cut)
The next time she shows up is in ch61 right after Kabru falls down the dungeon along with Mithrun, he faints and has this flashback
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's being her overbearing self treating Kabru's little injury as if its something you need to be in bed for, feeding him like he's a toddler, and when he insists he wants to learn how to fight and be strong like her, she hugs him revealing to us for the firs time her arm scars, she's cleary in distress too, so you wonder "what has happened to her?"
Tumblr media
It continues in the next pages, as she tells him to stay were its safe and there's cake, and describes the bad things he might encounter. Until he tells her he will go with or without her help
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly this is a Kabru we don't see often, this is the version of him that is usually in thought bubbles, he's blowing out in frustation over being smothered and demanding straight up what he wants, instead of trying to manipulate Milsiril, very blunt for him. Milsiril straight up flips a switch into battle mode tho, when she decides to train him for real.
Tumblr media
I really thought this was funny, the visual of these cuddly toys and this Mom that was being so soft just a second ago completely flipping into something menacing is very amusing to me. The phrase "I'll give you an exhaustive, thorough training in how to use a sword... until you finally decide that you're ready to give up." although it sounds cruel, it seems she really trained him as best she could to make sure he would survive the dungeon, if he couldn't take the training with her he wouldn't be able to take the dungeon, but he was, so much so that he managed to go. I can see this being seen as her trying to prevent him from going but to me it seems more like some tough love from a traumatized war veteran in this case.
Tumblr media
The last thoughts he has is admitting his Mom was right, "Not only were there plenty of traps, monsters, and malice... but there were times when I felt so hungry and cold that I couldn't stand it.
And he concludes with "I never once thought that I wanted to go back there. That room where I could eat all the cake that I wanted..." While I can understand the interpretation that he means he would rather go thru all this than go back and I think its rather a statement to how committed he is to defeating the dungeon, the visuals show him in rubble vs him in a soft big bed, the rough reality he fought to face and the comfyness of what his life could be. Plus is mirroing exactly what Milsiril said to him. Admiting she was right about the bad things but that he won't give up for the safe easy life he had.
After that visuals of milsiril are used while Kabru tries to sus out Mithrun but she shows up again in Mithrun's backstory.
Tumblr media
Here she's straight up called Gloomy, which wasn't really the version of her we saw so far, gotta remember this is also how Mithrun saw her and that she was called gloomy as a way of bullying. Kabru mostly cuts off her part in the story until the end, when she's the one to find Mithrun after he was eaten by the demon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She doesn't really care much for Mithrun as we see in some extras, and she was ready to mercy kill him, but she is also the one to spare his life, this could be seen as her thinking he can still be of use, and it's how it sounds with how Kabru tells the story, but I do think this was mercy, Mithrun was in rehabilitation for 20 years after being saved, by the time he was actually useful for anything Milsiril had already left the canaries and adopted Kabru.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for extras... For Mithrun/The Canaries, Milsiril was cleary someone that hated the people around her. This is her extra in the Adventurer's Bible
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milsiril seems to be the type that hates "popular kids" so to say, her description says she was bullied by other elves for being so introverted so I believe she has a grudge against people that succeeded where she failed. Realizing he was a twisted person like her seemed to make her feel more sympathetic towards him, that's why I think she really did act as mercy when she saves Mithrun, he's now someone she sees as similar to her, she sees he also suffered like her
Tumblr media
It also mentions she left the canaries specifically because she was disgusted with how the Utaya situation was dealt with. Yet it seems like she came back to help Mithrun with his rehabilitation once she quits.
Tumblr media
There's an interpretation to be made that she did this only to get "revenge" on the demon since she just saw the destruction of Utaya and that she's using him. On the other hand maybe she want's to help him find a motivation to live, she's no longer a canary and she has time to actually help him now. I don't know which one is the truth but it's not obviously something self-serving if you ask me. Especially in the context that right before this scene Milsiril admits she wishes they could have talked before.
My interpretation of her relationship with the canaries and other elves is that she's someone depressed that was mistreat for her 'quirky' side, the dolls are clearly one of the ways she used to cope with anxiety/depression but it only caused her to be bullied by her own kin, she's the daughter of an important family and it's shown in other extras, including one about Mithrun, that nobles send out the kids they don't want around to become canaries often. It's an easy way to get rid of someone undesirable and I think it was the case for Milsiril. (Pattadol even assumes her parents love her less for sending her to join the canaries).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No wonder than that now that she's finally free from the canaries she chose to seek her own happiness away from the society she felt she could never fit into, she clearly likes to take care of children too, I think it's mean to assume she only likes them because she's "superior" to them when there's no indication that this is the case.
And I don't think it's a coincidence she's so overprotective of Kabru after Utaya, it's literally the tragedy that was the breaking point for her, and he's a surviving small child from it, Milsiril cares about Kabru and wanted him to have a comfortable safe life after everything he went thru...
This ended up getting way too long so I'll make second part tomorrow about the rest of the extras and Kabru, and some other things I've seen said about Milsiril, but to answer the questions...
I don't think she treats her children as pets, Otta is just salty she was called out for dating like Leo Dicaprio.
Every single dungeon meshi character can be called morally grey because they all have flaws that in our world can be considered unforgivable, but they don't live in our world. To me Milsiril is doing her best in the context she lives in.
Who even is neurotypical in dungeon meshi, Milsiril is yet another flavour of a neurodivergent traumatized character among so many.
I believe she thought of the other canaries, especially Mithrun, as the same type of people that were cruel to her, probably because some of them really were, but that she generalized it to the point she thinks of all of them as bad by default. You can only get hurt so many times before you assume everyone will hurt you.

Seventeen as Pokemon Trainers
Genre: humor, crack
Note: partially inspired by @ugh-yoongi bts as pokemon gym leaders v fun way to break up the fic im working on. thinking about doing ateez if i get the inspo
m.list
Seungcheol
our leader but also the biggest baby girl. retired champion and uses the same team from his youth to this day. He’ll randomly show up places like some old man, talk about the good old days, and wait for someone to challenge him. The only person whose managed to best him is Jeonghan and his damn clefairy
team: charizard, dragonair, bronzong, spiritomb, lapras, aerodactyl
Tumblr media
Jeonghan
If you’re in the woods alone, Jeonghan will approach and ask for help while his pokemon pickpocket you. He likes the cute pokemon and has maxed them all out so he can scam people into battles and oneshot their entire team. Word on the street is his jigglypuff is wanted in multiple countries for tax evasion
team: tinkaton, jigglypuff, espeon, tandemaus, mime jr., clefairy
Tumblr media
Joshua
Gym leader and one of the first gyms you encounter. Copied the elite four in the sense that once you enter his gym you can’t leave unless you defeat everyone. Bug types are weak so he makes up for it by being a lunatic. Likes bug pokemon bc they freak people out. He’s more interested in people’s reaction to his team than winning but that doesn’t mean he’ll let up
team: vespiquen, drapion, gardevoir, dustox, parasect, galvantula
Tumblr media
Jun
Cats and cat adjacent. He’s literally just some guy that hangs around town and feeds the stray cats in hopes they’ll follow him home. So fars hes be successful. likes to have a staring contest with espurr that usual ends with them both falling asleep with their eyes open.
team: espurr, litten, purugly, glaceon, liepard, delcatty
Tumblr media
Hoshi
Gym leader and electric type enthusiast. Arcanine is the exception bc tiger is life. You hear him before you see him and if you do see him it’s probably because he's flying thirty feet in the air from a well timed thunderbolt courtesy of his Jolteon he can’t help but pet when thinking. one of the best gym leaders, also defeated the elite four but by then cheol was champion and hoshi learned a valuable lesson on why you shouldn't brag about winning with a one type team
team: luxray, jolteon, arcanine, electivire, zebstrika, emolga
Tumblr media
Wonwoo
All of his pokemon are from when he was an edgy teen and thought they made him look more intimidating because he wanted to be a gym leader. He’s mellowed out now and mostly battles for fun. A lot people think he’s scary but then he opens his mouth and goes on a 45 minute spiel about his absol’s favorite bedtime story and why hydreigon is simply misunderstood
team: hydreigon, absol, garchomp, mismagius, banette, lucario
Tumblr media
Woozi
Works out with his team so it's survival of the fittest. People think he’s intimidating because he is but actually very chill. Constantly asked why he doesn’t become a gym leader and the answer is always the same: he doesn’t w4ant to. He is content to sit back and watch Hoshi act like a psycho. Doesn’t really battle much but when he does his opponent is in for a world of hurt.
team: poliwrath, metagross, gallade, gigalith, hariyama, infernape
Tumblr media
Seokmin
Every pokemon he has starts with “well its actually a funny story…” dodrio just started following him home and seokmin was too scared to tell it to leave, same with lickilicky… and marill… and pikachu. But they’re basically a captive audience for his shenanigans and he sometimes will busk with chatot and makes a good amount of money
team: meganium, lickilicky, chatot, dodrio, marill, pikachu
Tumblr media
Mingyu
Aims for balance. Very bro with his pokemon except Cleffa who is carried around in one of those child wraps. Not on the journey to become champion, more so just wants to see the world with his besties. You can find him sleeping in a cuddle puddle with his team after sitting around the fire and eating too many marshmallows.
team: raichu, empoleon, emboar, tauros, cleffa, steelix
Tumblr media
Minghao
Appreciates the beauty of pokemon, especially ghost/dark/fairy. they fit his aesthetic. Has a few randoms to throw people off. You can find him sitting in a field under a full moon while they all meditate or just standing in a cave marveling at the nature (right before he sends you hightailing the way you came)
team: toxicroak, gengar, musharna, murkrow, houndoom, drifblim
Tumblr media
Seungkwan
My island boy… also a jock. Not a gym leader but a notoriously difficult trainer you meet later on the beach. His team is as sassy as he is and has no issue KO’ing everyone, including you. Hope you know how to swim!
team: blastoise, lopunny, ambipom, azumarill, milotic, blaziken
Tumblr media
Vernon
Average Mr. Chwe. Sometimes he’ll compete in tournaments if he’s bored or one of his friend’s drags him around. His team gets odd looks given he picked a few because they make him laugh but ngl they love him and are shockingly good in battle.
team: sudowoodo, slugma, squirtle, munchlax, mr. rime, combusken
Tumblr media
Chan
Living his ash ketchum fantasy. Next champion but Seungcheol keeps threatening to come out of retirement just to fuck with him. Josh sought him out just to KO his team before he even reached the first gym town. Hoshi found him on a random beach and let him win just so when he got to his gym Hoshi could destroy his team several times before Chan managed to land a single attack.
team: ivysaur, ninetales, krookodile, shelgon, gyarados, larvitar

Omg omg omg I just thought about uconn wbb team with their manager on live moments. Can we get a headcannon or fic for this?
I like to think that despite being the manager, she is best friends with the team and tends to be with them (they totally didn’t pull her from her work cuz she works so much noooooo, not at all)
(^ this could also possible be why people are suspicious of she has something going on with one of the team members cuz she’s almost ALWAYS with them even outside of school and it’s to a point where ppl are like “um🤨 she’s around y’all a lot to JUST be a manager.”Just food for thought👀)
BUT IN THIS CASE, as i mentioned before we can’t expect manager-baby to be in tiktok’s and other videos and just (somehow) not being pulled into their live shenanigans.
BUT this is where people see a. just how done the manager is with the girls and b. THEIR PERSONALITY
I guarentee the girls always say how the manager is like “she’s very witty/sarcastic/a smartass/sweet/hyper.” and ppl at first are like “??? you mean that manager with a mean ass death stare?? no way.” And this is where the live moments come through.
You can really see how much she cherishes the team and her bond with them, and no matter how much they may bicker and tease eachother. They love one another.
There’s 100% a tiktok compilation of the manager being sassy/a smartass in lives you cannot convince me otherwise. Also I think manager has a MEAN ass side eye.
Along the sweetness you can also see how much they fuckin bicker.
“KK, you’re delulu with or without a man involved.”
KK: “Okay you’re off the live.” *shifts camera*
—-
“Paige you have the confidence of a much taller woman.”
Paige: “Bro I’m LITERALLY taller than you.”
“That’s what makes it more embarrassing.”
——-
Also, THE TEAM PULLS OUT MANAGERS SOFT SIDE!!!! Manager may be strict but is very sweet and loving. I also personally headcannon that they’re one of those people that call their friends pet names like “baby” “babes” “darling” “love” “sugar” “pumpkin” etc. on instinct cuz of their sweet nature. And it’s not like they’re TRYING to fluster people, it’s just what they do. Manager loves platonic love!!!! They’re also the girls safe place.
Manager can’t help but melt when it comes to the team because she just cares for them so much and they just easily take away her tough guy mask.
Also more rare clips of manager lowkey (high key) flirting with the team, which is something she tends to do off camera but sometimes slips out when the cameras rolling. (There’s 100% someone on the team that calls the manager their wife. The “yall argue like a married couple.” people)
-🐹
yes, nonnie!! manager is really close with the team because she's known them for so long and she spends sooo much time with them, it's kinda bound to happen
at first i feel like people would not like manager just because she's the friendilest (AT FIRST!!!!) but when they begin to make tik toks/do lives with her, everyone falls in love with her!!!!!!!
she's very much the glue of the team and like, she has a dynamic with everyone on the team. her and nika are like BEST friends, kk and her have a little/older sister dynamic, paige and her have an old married couple dynamic, so on and so forth. every loves a good dynamic so everyone just falls in love with her!!
oh my god, YES. she becomes a staple in UConn "fandom" bc like, she's just so iconic like??? there's like a million compilations of manager side eyeing people bc its sooo funny
the whole petname thing is SO real, thats also why people start to believe that she's dating one of the players😭😭 ALSO, when she meets fans and stuff, she will call them petnames (again cus it's like normal for her) and again people just fall in love w her
there are more random manager headcanons coming soon promise 🫶🏼
SEND MORE THOUGHTS, I LOVE READING THEMMMMM!!!!!!

Jason Grace as Percy when he forgot about everyone but Annabeth?
Jase only remembers reader, his best friend (who he is in love with but haven't confessed to each other yet) And everyone stays because they realize their connection And maybe at night they try to talk about it and he's being completely direct like "I think it's because I love you, like Percy doesn't love Annabeth" and reader is like ?????? "I love you too but that was abrupt" MVNZVKZJKSFKSA SORRY I LOVE HIM
.˚ 𓈒 ࣪.𝝑𝝔 Prophecy-Crossed Lovers!! ´ˎ˗
Jason Grace x Fem!Juno!Reader Synopsis: after Jasons disappearance, you just had to tell him how you felt the next time you saw him!! Tag(s): reader starts unclaimed, prophecy of EIGHT, cursing if it must be said I suppose Word Count: 3042 A/N: you absolutely ATE with this one holyyyy, also I really need to stop saying I suppose its actually a problem omg
Tumblr media
"C'mon Jase, its okay not to be so humble all the time," you joked.
"What," he chuckled. "All I'm saying is that when you like your job it isn't hard."
"You risk your life every time you step out of camp Jupiter, you can brag you know."
"Fine, maybe I am humble."
You and Jason were out around 9PM, walking around New Rome together just talking and laughing like normal. He was your best and you were his. You both had a massive crush on one another, but with his job taking on all his time, you wouldn't assume he had the time for crushes, so you kept your mouth shut. Then again on his defense, he just didn't think you liked him back.
"C'mere," you grabbed his wrist and dragged him toward the nearest bakery. "Let's get some cupcakes!"
"You just love to run though my wallet don't you?"
"Well, I mean, if your offering," you both laughed. Jason paid for the both of your cupcakes, you got strawberry and he got vanilla.
"Here," the cashier handed you both the baked goods. "I added on the couples discount for the two of you."
The cashier winked and walked off, leaving you and Jason hot in the face. You both looked at each other, quickly looked away, and walked off and sat outside together at a table together.
"Cashier was funny," he mumbled into his vanilla treat.
"Yeah," you mumbled back.
"We're best friends right?"
"Yeah, I'm always here for you, you know," you slid you hands across the table, and he held them in his. You both were very close with one another, and the line between friendship and romance was so blurred neither of you dared to speak up on it. Why possibly ruin what you have?
"We should head back, its getting late," he smiled.
"Yeah of course," you both stood up, not letting go of one another hands as he walked you back to your cabin. It always a goodnight when Terminus doesn't start a riot. "Well, goodnight Jason, see ya tomorrow."
"Of course, goodnight Y/N," he waved as you shut the door behind you. Walking through the doors of the fifth cohort, you walked over toward your bed trying to sleep. You tossed and turned till finally falling asleep an hour later.
You woke up in your bed, except you didn't really wake up. The air around you felt like static, and when you stood up, it felt weird to move. You were in a dream, a demigod dream.
You don't remember the last time you had one, so you were nervous. When you looked at your feet, there was a faint golden trail leading you somewhere. You followed it, then you realize you're walking towards Jason's cabin. When you walked in, all the beds contained a sleeping camper except for one. Jason's bed.
You were weirded out, you walked toward and saw the bed was empty and made. You walked toward the bathroom, to see no one was in there. Looking at the clock, it was 6AM, not even Jason wakes up this early.
'He's gone.'
You looked around, not seeing anyone who could've whispered that in your ear.
'He might even die before he comes back.'
You start freaking out, even hyperventilating, dreams intensify emotions and this was absolutely terrible.
'Will the memory of you alone be enough to bring him home, back to you, alive?'
You shot up in your bed, absolutely coated in sweat. Fellow campers were starting to crowd around you, looking at you with concern.
"Hey.. Y/N are you okay," one girl asked.
"Yeah, you were, like, groaning and you sounded like you were having a nightmare," another boy said.
"What time is it," you spat out.
"Like 9:50AM," someone said. You eyes shot open as you threw your blanket off and ran toward Jasons cabin. You slammed through the doors, and only saw some stragglers hanging behind, they were normally early risers here.
"Have any of you seen Jason," you asked frantically. There were confused murmurs of nos and nopes running through the room. Reyna walked out the bathroom in her normal attire as you rushed toward her. "Did you send Jason out?"
"No, I woke up later than normal, I thought he'd be out with you or something," she responded.
"No, he's not," you nodded.
"Is something wrong?"
"Yes."
She quickly led you toward her Preators office, beckoning you to sit in front of her. As you explain to her the dream, you can see in her eyes as her expression starts going sour.
The next few months were depressing to say the least. He was your best friend, and the guy you're in love with, so him being missing is like, well, you're missing. Right now you were sitting in your bed reading a book and a newcomer, Hazel Levesque, comes and sits by the end of your bed. You two became close, she knew what it was to lose someone close to you.
"Y/N," she said softly.
"What's up," you looked up at her.
"Can I asked you something," she asked, and you just nodded. "What was Jason like. He must've been pretty awesome, since you know, how longs its been, and... yeah."
She didn't want to cross the line and say more, but she didn't have to. Everyone knew of your feelings, except Jason. You started going on and on about Jason, all his amazing qualities. His loyalty and kindness that knew no bounds. You stopped before you started gushing about just how hot and good-looking he was, and then had just found yourself daydreaming about what he could be doing right now. Had he made new friends, found a girlfriend maybe?
﹒º. ౨ৎ
"Dude, I'm working as fast as I can," Leo complained.
"I know you are, sorry man," Jason apologized.
"Whats up with you bro?"
"We need to go back to my camp, what if she's still there? It sucks that she's all I can remember but can just barely remember what we were before leaving. It's just stressful."
"For a guy with amnesia, you use the word remember a lot," Leo joked and Jason just rolled his eyes. "But seriously dude. Spill. Whats she like, she's got to be amazing if you swerve all the, and may I add, really hot girls here for the literally memory of her."
He sighed and took a seat on a nearby work bench, while Leo continued working on the Argo II, "She was my best friend. Ever since I'd made it to camp Jupiter, she'd been by my side. She made me laugh, she helped me to get over my Preator troubles, she just was there for everything. And before you ask, she's beautiful."
Leo just listened to his whipped friend go on about about this mysterious girl. "You sound like Annabeth, but at least she's actually dating Percy."
"Are we talking about how whipped Jason is," Piper said as she announced her presence.
"You guys are so annoying sometimes," Jason laughed.
"Careful, if she's everything you hype her up to be, might just have to steal her away from you," Piper joked.
"You might have too, maybe then he'll finally get the, whats the word, ambition? To make a move," Leo added. Jason sighed, looking disappointed. Leo took the chance to walk up next to him and comfort his friend.
"I just wish I knew what she was to me, was she just a friend? Because I don't think people spend this much time thinking about someone whose just a friend."
Leo rubbed circles onto his friends back. "Must suck being anemic."
"Amnesiac."
"Whatever," Leo smiled, he leaned in pretending to plant a kiss on Jason's cheek, before he laughed and swatted him off. Leo went back to working on the Argo II, while Jason and Piper went off and did their own thing.
"Hey, you think you could send an Iris message to a Roman," Piper suggested.
"We'd never even heard of them over there, so probably not," he groaned. Piper felt bad, but thankfully by just about next week they would be flying out to camp Jupiter to pick up the rest of the eight.
﹒º. ౨ৎ
"He sounds amazing," Hazel smiled.
"Yeah, he is," you smiled back. Before could say anything else, another newcomer, Frank Zhang, came running in.
"Hey Hazel," he stumbled. He was adorable, and clearly had a thing for Hazel.
"Oh hey Frank," she waved. "Is it time for our guard duty?"
"Yeah."
"Bye Y/N," she waved. You waved back as you watched them walk off together. 'adorbs.'
You decided it was time to get out of bed and go for a jog. Something you did before with Jason before he left. After about half an hour, you were walking towards the mess hall for some food. Except you were quickly stopped when you saw a bunch of people running off somewhere together, so of course you followed.
They all ran toward the camp entrance, and what you saw was insane. He was making typhoons like it was nothing, was he a god? Frank and Hazel stood back in disbelief as they watched this rugged looking guy take down two gorgons like it was nothing. He was so powerful, and had been out in the world. Maybe he knew something about Jason?
After the whole incident unfolded, you noticed an old lady standing off to the side. She thanked - Percy, his name was Percy - for bringing her to safety, then she started... glowing?
Gasps were flying around as people started kneeling, but you couldn't tell why. "Why aren't you kneeling like everyone else?"
Instead of an old woman, she looked somewhat younger, taller, and more regal looking. "Who.. are you?"
People started murmuring around you, "My my, I'm Juno," you inhaled sharply. "Unclaimed I see. Don't worry my darling, soon enough you'll play your part."
Then, she disappeared. People were struggling to look between you and Percy, not knowing what was more shocking anymore. Reyna quickly whisked the both of you, with Hazel and Frank, to her office. She sat down, you zoned out as she asked your two cabin mates what happened, then interrogated Percy.
"Y/N, what Juno said.. have you had anymore of those dreams," you shook your head, disappointed you couldn't help more. She understood and let yourself be excused. (You pressed up against the door and listened to Reyna quickly offer Preatorship to Percy, and him claim to have a girlfriend and turn her down. Wow.)
Percy walked out the door and you quickly stopped him, wanting to have a word. "Percy?"
"Y/N?"
"I need to know, while you were out there what was happening, and did you ever meet a guy named Jason, or at least heard of him? Please, I really need to know."
"Sorry, no. All I remember is my Annabeth, and that I really need to make it back to her... Is Jason like, your boyfriend or something," he asked. You looked down at your feet, softly shaking your head again. Percy put his hand on our shoulder before speaking up again. "I'll help find him, alright?"
"Alright," you smiled.
Quicker than you thought, though you weren't surprise at this point, Mars made an appearance and for some reason Percy seemed to know him and wanted to rock his shit??? Whatever. Not the point. He got sent off on a quest with Hazel and Frank. Now you were alone again, but whatever. Not like they'd be gone long, you supposed.
As quick as they left, they were now back to camp. Safe and sound might be a strong way to put it, but they were back. You took the three of them to your favorite bakery in new Rome for some brownies. Coincidently, this was the last place you went with Jason, but that wasn't the point, or maybe it was, shut up.
You were looking down into your brownie with a neutral expression when Percy suddenly pulled you out your gaze. He was pointing into the sky, and there it was. Percy told you his Greek friends would be on their way, but you hadn't realized that they spared no expense it seemed. The four of you went running, and the closer you got, the more you noticed it. Or him.
There he was, standing in his Preator's uniform on the front of the ship, you almost broke down right there, but you stayed strong. There were four people on the ship and they all dropped down from a ladder, except one. You saw him from afar waving his friends off as he walked back inside.
You stood there starstruck, and when you turned to Percy, you both had the same look on your faces. It was like time froze, and you two went running. Percy landing into who you assumed was Annabeth, and you in Jason's arms. Jason hugged you tight enough to swing you around while you snuggled into his neck. "I missed you Jase," you whispered into his neck.
"I miss you too," he said as he pulled away. You both turned when you heard a thud, Percy was getting judo flipped. LOL! "Anddd she missed him, too."
You laughed and walked toward them. All the romans around were weary when Reyna left to speak with Annabeth while you and Jason left to speak alone. "So... where've you been?"
"It's a really, reallyyy long story. But first things first, we need the rest of the four."
"Percy, Hazel and Frank," you spat out with no hesitation.
"Your not gonna offer to come?"
"What help could I really offer? I'm not even claimed," you shrugged.
"Y/N..."
"What? I mean... it sucks but it's true," you sighed.
"I want you to come with us."
"You think I don't want to? That's all I want, I don't want to see you leave again without me. You don't understand what it was like staying here without you for all those months Jase," you didn't want to sound whiny, gods only know what he's been through, but still.
"You're coming with us because-" BOOM! Both of you whipped your heads around and saw the ship everyone flew here on was firing shots. Without a second thought you both went running and saw the Romans trying to fight off the Greeks. You tried helping Jason to stop the fight, when suddenly you saw something flying towards his head.
"JASON," you yelled as you ran your way towards him. You saw him on the floor passed out and ran by his side. You watched as a native girl helped to hold off the Romans while you sat by his side. You saw more people approaching from behind and grabbed the dagger you always keep by your side and started fending more people off.
One person, one person who completely ticks you off was making his way, and it was Octavian. "Why're you defending these traitors??"
"They're not traitors," you started. "They're gonna be the ones to save the world. And don't you ever talk on Jason that way again."
You slammed your dagger back into Octavians chest and slammed him into the ground, then you noticed a glow from above you. You looked in a haze and saw some rings and flowers above you. You'd never seen this before, nor did you know it was even possible.
You had just been claimed by Juno. And were now sure that Jason was right.
You turned and saw Jason starting to sit up, "Frank," you yelled. "Grab Jason and we have to go!"
You had recently learned about Frank's new ability and did it come in handy. The eight of you rushed onto the ship and said bon voyage as fast as possible!! The first moments of landing were rough, between Percy grilling some latino on what happened on the ship, and you helped Jason onto his feet while he directed you towards his room to lay down. "Some preator I am, huh?"
"Lookin very snazzy in your uniform Jase," you chuckled as you took a seat in front of him. "Did you see, I got claimed."
"I can't believe I missed it," he groaned. "By who?"
"Juno."
"Hm. Juno and Jupiter," he chuckled.
"What were you gonna say? Like earlier, before the explosion happened?"
Jason paused, all the confidence he had slowly draining away, but he pushed through anyways. "That I didn't want to be separated again. That I think I'm in love with you."
Your jaw slightly dropped and your eyes widened. "That was abrupt." Not at all what you meant to say.
"Abrupt? That's.. it?"
"Well I mean, I know I love you, so you thinking you love me too is nice to hear, but still, you really just spat that out didn't you," you laughed, causing him to laugh, too.
"But I really do, and I wanna say it before I accidentally go missing again," he joked.
"Hey, chill with that."
"Too soon?"
"Quite," you smiled. You looked into his icy blue eyes, then down to the scar on his lip and the way it moved when you smiled. Without thinking you just went for it and kissed him. You had the sides of his head in your hands as Jason pulled you closer by the waist. You took the chance to move your legs around his waist. His grip on your body tightened as you slid your tongue along his.
﹒º. ౨ৎ
"You think he finally said something," Leo said while he was chowing down on some ice cream.
"I hope so," Piper made eye contact with Leo. "Wanna find out?"
"100%," the two walked to Jason's room. Leo held onto the doorknob and silently counted to three before throwing the door open. "Hey guys!!"
Leo and Piper were starting to regret walking in without knocking. You both sat there embarrassed with your frizzled hair and no shirts, awkward!! Jason just groaned and threw a pillow at the duo standing at the door as they laughed and shut the door behind them. "This might be our sign to start knocking."
"Just might be.."

I’m obsessed with this show and fear a hyperfixation anyways here are my thoughts on every character in the show
Edwin Paine: forever my favorite, even back before the show when I read the comics! I think it’s funny that basically every man in the show wants him? I’m intrigued by his character arc throughout the story regarding his sexuality as despite dying in 1916, he seems to have had time to slowly become more accepting of gay people (I’m guessing in part due to Charles, who is pansexual), to the point where there’s only mild internalized homophobia if at all, which just exhibits itself in him denying any possible feelings for Monty. I love how face-value and logical he is while still being a sweetheart
Charles Rowland: he has a pan flag pin on his jacket which confuses me bc can ghosts only wear clothes they would’ve worn when they were alive, or how do ghost clothes work? Because he died in 1989 and I’m near positive he didn’t wear that pin back there. Anyways I do love him but I wonder about some design choices, like the one earring (not sure why it just kinda annoys me). That was more a rant abt his design than his character, which I have nothing notable to say abt since I LOVE HIM he’s so real
Crystal Palace: sometimes she was a bit annoying the way she was trying way too hard to pry into everyone’s lives, but honestly that was just momentary annoyance since nothing could make me hate her. I love how her past was slowly revealed (as someone who already knew it from the comics) and how she came to terms with the person she used to be vs the person she is now. She’s so cool!
David the demon: honestly kind of caught me off guard at first bc the person I’m dating is named David but I actually enjoyed his character. LOVED when Crystal dealt with him in the end. He was very interesting
Niko Sasaki: I love Niko, but I have some problems with her character. First of all, I feel like ditsy anime-loving cutesy Asian girl with dyed hair is a weirdly common trope? But whatever my main issue is that it feels like characters who normalize the fetishization of gay men are so common. Like if Niko had been a guy obsessed with lesbian manga evb would be weirded out, so why is it different? If we ignore all of this tho I absolutely adore her and I’m actually praying she’s in the next season bc she was one of my favorites (esp her relationship w Edwin)
Jenny: She is so hot and cool and funny I’m in love with her
Esther: oh my god words cannot come close to describing how much I love her character. She felt powerless and weak in the past and now she’s become obsessed with making sure nobody has that power over her ever again. She was so fun and I loved her attitude! I’m sure she won’t show up next season, as she was the main antagonist of s1, and while I love her, I kind of hope she doesn’t since I think her arc was finished.
Monty: His personality was like 2020 “soft boy” who acts nice and dumb but is lowkey a manipulator. So obviously this kind of made me like ☠️ bc why is he acting like that… but I still love him to bits because he’s just a crow guys he didn’t ask to be human,, Anyways yeah his personality annoys me but also I love him so much so? It’s confusing. ITS COMPLICATED. I will cry if he’s not in s2
Kingham and Litty: I honestly thought they were annoying but I can’t lie they were so fucking funny. Every time they were on screen I laughed.
Cat King: oh my god. He is so camp. I love him. There’s honestly not much to say he is simply iconic. Love how he’s afraid to be alone so chases after other people, he’s so real AGHH I love him
Night Nurse: Ruth Connell the woman you are… 😍 she reminds me of Muriel from Good Omens, in a way, and I love her! I really hope we get to see more of her in relation to the guy in the fish, and see her get to better understand human emotions and why they choose to cling onto the human world rather than pass on!

2024 Book Review #19 – Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
Tumblr media
This is the third book I’ve picked up as part of my whole aspirational ‘read a piece of non-SFF capital-l Literature every month’ New Years resolution. Of those three, it is the second I opened only to discover it actually is science fiction and/or fantasy after all. Which is just a very funny thing to happen twice, and also meant the book was significantly less outside my comfort zone than I’d expected. Which did make it quite a pleasant read.
The story follows Klara, an AF (Artificial Friend, a companion robot for children) in a broadly sketched and mildly dystopian future America. At first it just follows her life in the shop where she’s kept, observing the world around her and interacting with the store manager and the other AFs, but the meat of the book is her life with the family who buys her. Over time you learn that Josie, her child, suffers from severe and increasing health issues as a consequence of being ‘lifted’ (genetically enhanced, in some unclear way) in the womb. Klara, being solar-powered and having quietly developed a one-robot religion underpinned by a firm belief in the power and benevolence of Mr. Sun (and a moral opposition to Pollution, which obscures and drives him away) does her best to invoke his help in nourishing and restoring Josie. At the same time, she learns that her job is not just to comfort Josie but, should she die, to be her mother’s replacement goldfish and imitate her perfectly.
The setting is broadly sketched and never really exposited upon – it’s just not something Klara is particularly interested in – but it’s a very modern sort of dystopia. Much of the populace, even among the American professional elite, have been left ‘post-employed’ by robotic automation. The remaining meritocratic elite have embraced novel and risky genetic enhancements for their children, as the only possible way of ensuring they get into a good school and one of the few good careers left. There are fascist militia compounds off in the distance somewhere. The overall feeling is that of a society dimly aware it’s midway through collapsing, but with no ideas of how to arrest its fall. But since Klara has no interest at all in either politics or economics, we only see this as it directly intrudes upon the story, with nary a lecture or manifesto to be seen.
I’ve only ever read one other book by Ishiguro, so I really don’t know how much this generalizes, but the similarities to Never Let Me Go really were striking. Both books are set in really rather horrifying societies, but portrayed in an utterly normalized way by someone who never even thinks to question the real rules they live under. Which is even more striking because in both cases the protagonist is seen by society as only quasi-human – like a person, but existing only in relation to and for the benefit of the people who really matter. And in both cases the story follows the protagonist who lives their life moving through the role they were made for without ever really resisting it, let alone changing it. Not that the roles of ‘friend to sick child’ and ‘mandatory organ donor’ are exactly comparable but, you know.
A definition I’ve always kind of liked for what makes literary fiction, well, literary is that it’s as or more concerned with the beauty and presentation of its prose than it is on the information the prose is conveying. Not at all true in terms of how the term’s actually used (genre is marketing), but it works for me, and lets this book count as literature quite handily. The whole story is told quite tightly from Klara’s point of view, and it’s a pleasure to read. Even if it took me more than a few pages to really understand how she described scenes, always foregrounding the ways they were divided by grids or patterns of the sun’s light.
Portraying the normal human society through the eyes of a naive and somewhat alien narrator to get away without explaining everything is a classic sci fi trope for a reason, but it’s overall used really well here as well.
I’m still not entirely sure how to interpret the sudden intrusion of magical realism with the ending. But otherwise, really quite a good read.

Topic of the night: Max Verstappen’s dominance in formula one
@flyingcakeee you’re being tagged because you deal with my yap seshes 24/7
Max hate got so bad across platforms, had to specify that I indeed support his dominance in this sport. And will not be participating in the; “praying on his downfall” day.
Thank you.
No but in all seriousness. I get WHY people say “it’s getting boring” and to some extent I do agree, being able to anticipate who’s gonna win takes away some fun. However, it only adds to the enjoyment of NOT knowing another outcome. When Max dominates, majority of you guys don’t think of other possibilities. “What if Charles gets the lead?” “What if this is Landos first win” Max’s dominance allows us as fans to not only enjoy his progression in the sport, but also the anticipation of not knowing what else can happen.
of course, never would I pray on a drivers downfall. Every driver has their ins and outs. Max has been a personal new grid favourite of mine for a while. As has Lando () however, when he wins I get excited. Not for Redbull, but for him [or checo] individually.
Claiming that the sport is getting boring purely BECAUSE he’s winning is so ridiculous, at least in my opinion it is. I won’t fight you on it, that’s not what these yap seshes are for. I can come to terms with different opinions and thoughts. Hell if you don’t like Max, that’s totally fine. No one can truly bash your ideal driver lineup. But purely placing the blame onto him, as if he has a choice, is funny. He’s given a damn good car, and he’s a damn good driver who can control said car. Of course he’s going to take it home every race. He’s talent, skill, and ability mashed into one. It’s not “the car” it’s him.
here’s what I say; if you give a driver a good and fast car, said driver needs to be able to control it.
Redbull has given Max a very good car, as they should, and he’s been able to control it. THATS what the sport is about, good driver = good car, good car = needs a driver that can control it. It’s not about him reducing his wins because fans think his dominance is wasted or repetitive.
Even if Redbull didn’t give him a worthy car, yall think Max wouldn’t haul its dusty ass to 1st still? He proved way back in his early years that even when the car is absolutely shit, that he’s able to control it well enough in the points.
Rounding back. I can see why the sports getting boring. I too find it a bit boring, but that’s not because of his dominance, but because everything is really happening off-track more than on-track. And unfortunately the times good shit happens, it spirals out of control and things happen [AHEM Daniel AHEM Lance AHEM] also because I’ve watched this sport for so long, sometimes the excitement doesn’t catch up to me in time. I’ve always found Indy more entertaining, but F1 comes a damn close second along with WEC.
Anyways this is my propaganda against Max hate.

Something honestly a bit befalling to me and just kinda funny is that almost every statement made by an ex admin confusingly starts with "I had a lovely and perfectly fine experience working here and have only just now found out other people had a way worse time then me" and then they proceed to explain their experience and it sounds like everyone else's or sometimes worse and im like ...???? You sure about that??? Im sure this is just because as their writing their statements their fully remembering the harder times and also because the good may outweigh the bad for them and thats very very valid of course. I guess I just always think its kinda funny to see them downplay it a bit at the beginning and then proceed to tell you about all the awful workplace abuse like...sweetie your standers please treat yourself well!
RIGHT ???? I saw that before his testimony he said he had a great time and things weren’t bad for him and i was like oh that’s nice we know not everyone was treated the same so it’s cool that some of the admins enjoyed their experience
and then it’s like « i was paid 400$ max a month for making models and then started coming up with most of the island lore, writing it in game, make artworks, all of that with no raise and under crazy deadlines while being told i wasn’t doing much ahah » JAW ON THE FLOOR 😳
employers better fight to hire the ex qsmp admins bc these people were working 10 jobs at once and were good at it like theyre so talented damn

What I Thought About The Owl House Pilot
Huh. Never thought I’d get to do this again, but oh well.
Salutations, random people on the internet! I’m an Ordinary Schmuck! I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
And, above all else, I LOVE talking about The Owl House. I have an entire masterpost dedicated to talking about every single episode of the show and I’m halfway through a six-part review discussing everything that I love about it (Part Four's coming when it’s done. Let’s say…late June. Early July at the latest). I figured that after I’d finished that whole deal, I wouldn’t have anything left to talk about when it came to this series. Then, out of nowhere, the show’s original pilot leaked online…Sort of. It’s just an animatic with the show’s original voice cast voicing MOST of the lines, but it’s very much the pilot episode. It’s just not a finished product and I won’t share a link because I don’t think it’s exactly…legal. BUT I will at least share my thoughts about it because, well…Look at my blog. The Owl House has become the BIG THING that I obsess over for a reason and I love that I got to see what’s basically an alternate version of the show that I love. What do I mean?
Well, a pilot is MUCH different from a first episode. Where the first episode is meant to sell the show to the audience, a pilot is meant to sell it to a STUDIO. It can happen at any point of the story or act as the show’s first episode. Just as long as it shows off the characters, concepts, and tone, a studio can look at it, greenlight it, and allow the show to continue, BUT with some extra notes. Sometimes, those notes can change the rest of the series where others can keep the pilot good enough to stay canon. Some best examples off the top of my head are the pilots for Regular Show and Rick and Morty. You can tell that not much changed from the pilots of those shows and what was initially pitched, but there are clear changes in tone, animation, and even personality. Skips sounds a little more illiterate and Benson being more informed of the consequences of something as simple as rock, paper, scissors in the Regular Show pilot and Rick is noticeably more reckless and unprepared for situations in the Rick and Morty pilot. Nothing is set in stone with a pilot episode, even the ones that are canon. For the case of The Owl House, it’s pilot is no exception. A lot of it is just the same as “A Lying Witch and A Warden” at least in terms of plot and themes, but there are so many changes that show off what the series COULD HAVE been instead of what it was. How different? Well, let’s go through it all.
But real quick, I’m not going to do the “Like/Dislike” format I’ve done for previous reviews. Instead, I’m going to look through this pilot, note the changes it has, and share my thoughts on them. There’s also going to be a few spoilers to what happens in this pilot, so if you haven’t checked it out then I suggest giving it a watch wherever you can find it. It really is interesting to get a peak into what’s basically an alternate version of my favorite show.
With that said, let’s get into it.
Some Things Stayed the Same: Like I said, it’s basically an altered version of “A Lying Witch and A Warden.” The plot is that Eda uses Luz to get King back his “crown of power,” with some bits and pieces carrying over. Certain jokes that must have been too funny to get rid of, specific lines of dialogue that hit just the right notes, and some aspects of the characters’ personalities being just the same, proving that they're already perfect the way they are. It’s the changes, however, that makes for something more interesting. For one…
There’s More of an Emphasis on Comedy: As much as I love The Owl House, I’ll always admit that humor isn't its strong suit. It CAN be funny, really funny. But the jokes don’t land as well as something as Gravity Falls or Amphibia. I can say that a part of that could be because Dana Terrace wanted a more serious show, and we definitely get a sense of how serious it could be later in the series. Here, in the pilot, it definitely seems like there was more of an attempt to make the show comedic. King’s crown isn’t in a warden’s cell held within a magical barrier that only a human can get through. It’s in a Principal’s high school, locked in a human locker that Eda and King treat as something devious. Amity’s friends aren’t preppy mean girls who seem like they could cause conflict to Luz and her friends. They’re characters used for jokes who are amazed by Luz standing up to Lilith. There’s less of an edge and more of a lean towards cutesy fun, waiting until the very end to reveal something heavy. To me, it makes the pilot feel MORE like a Gravity Falls clone than the final product. Because while Gravity Falls has its serious moments, it makes it clear that it was a comedy first, both in the pilot and final product. Any moment of heart or drama was overshadowed by one hilarious joke after the other. Now, “A Lying Witch and A Warden” had a lot of jokes too, but there were also these moments that hinted at something more. You have the oppressive looking prison, the grand beam of light hiding human collectibles, a crazy chase from a threatening looking warden. And yes, the reveal that Warden Wrath was trying to go out with Eda was hilarious, but a warden who tortures a prisoner for speaking her truth gives a hint of how dark this world can be. Meanwhile, a principal sending a student to demon detention feels more like a joke, exaggerating how strict some principals can be.
And keep in mind, I’m not complaining about the pilot leaning more towards comedy. I actually laughed a lot more with it than I did with “A Lying Witch and A Warden.” I’m just trying to explain how the tone is definitely going for something different than the full series. It might have that darker twist in the end, but even that is nothing more than a surprise. I'll get into why later, but while it has darker implications, it doesn't detract from the fun times to be had. Not by much. From what I can gather from the pilot, it’s definitely going for a series with goofy, fun adventures with a bit of heart to it. It’s just missing that personal touch that’s in The Owl House. One good example of how?
There’s Not Even a MENTION of Camila: Before you say anything, this has nothing to do with me being Camila’s number one fan, to the point where I almost made a side-blog dedicated to her (I really should get on that, though…)
I bring up this change because Camila grounds the story in “A Lying Witch and A Warden.” She draws Luz close to reality and is the first thing that comes to Luz’s mind when in real danger, saying, “If I die, my mom will kill me!” More than that, though, Camila is the one real connection Luz has to the human realm. She has no friends nor adventures, but Luz always has Camila, with even the first episode hinting that. So when Luz starts getting herself into trouble or choosing to lie and stay in the Boiling Isles, it lets the audience get ready for the inevitable drama that could unfold when Luz finally tells Camila everything. By removing Camila, though, the anticipation of Luz telling her mom goes away with her. At least, it tells ME that there’s less of a worry about Luz basically running away from home. Either this version of the show is holding off from that for a future episode or that Luz and Camila’s relationship isn’t close enough where it matters. This is speculation, of course, but I still stand by that a sense of something personal with Luz is lost for the sake of having fun and epic fantasy adventures with entertaining characters. It’s still good and entertaining, and the pilot does offer something else that’s personal, but it’s not the same as The Owl House we all fell in love with. Though, it’s notable that our main cast stayed the same.
Luz, Eda, and King: Overall, I’d say that these three, personality wise, didn’t change much. King’s probably the least altered, being the exact same character he was in Season One aside from MAYBE having a design change (It’s hard to tell through storyboards). As for Luz and Eda, they’re more or less the same. There’s a BIG change with Eda (That I’ll get to later), but her devil-may-care attitude is very much the same, as well as her snark and soft nature towards Luz and King. It’s her magic that gets the real boost, being able to do more like teleport across the Isles and turn into a…softer version of the Owl Beast at will. It’s pretty cool to see the power that this alternate Owl Lady has. And then there’s Luz, who’s still the lovable weirdo we all know. Though, this version seems a lot more dim and I’m not really a fan. How does she mistakenly give a book report in geometry class? How did it take seeing Amity’s witch ears to realize that she belonged in the demon realm? Luz had her dumb moments in the show too, but not to this extent. There was still a sense of maturity and cognitive understanding that made Luz feel like someone that seemed weird but intelligent enough to think herself out of a situation. This Luz seems more weird and focused on using brute force on a problem. In a way, it makes Pilot!Luz more of an…emotionally driven Star Butterfly. A fun and capable character, but not the same kind I had made several posts and reviews talking about how much I love/personally connected to her. But, comparatively, I guess it IS the most minor change that could be done to this character. Now let’s move onto BIGGER changes.
The Boiling Isles: The look and feel of the Isles remains the same, but the fact that it’s more connected to the Human Realm is intriguing. From what I can tell, the Demon Realm treats traveling to the Human Realm like it’s going to a new country. You visit, make some memories, and, for some, send your children over to be a foreign exchange student of sorts. Except that racism seems to be encouraged in this regard as the demons and witches don’t see humans worth breathing the same air as them. And some think it’s more than okay to hunt down and kill if one human trespasses into their realm. And the reason for THAT is implied to be Belos’ doing. Er, I mean–*Checks the leaked pitch bible*--Emperor Pupa? Uh…I’ll just stick with Belos.
And that’s extra fascinating to me because Belos being a witch hunter was a major twist that spoke VOLUMES of the kind of people he represents. To find out that this version is more anti-human makes me curious of what kind of angle the show would have taken. Would Belos have been your bare-bones fantasy villain or would the writers find a different way to tackle his symbolism? And is the reason why the Demon Realm is more open up to the Human Realm because he hopes witches and demons can report about their enemies for a possible invasion? There’s no way to know for sure because that version of the story will never come to be, but it’s interesting to think of all the things we COULD have gotten. The same goes for other characters.
Amity: To think, Amity was considered important enough to be included in the original pitch pilot alongside our main trio. It makes sense. Dana Terrace has gone on record in saying that Luz and Amity’s relationship was something she wanted from the get go, so it’s smart to establish it as quickly as possible. Though the route they take is definitely different. Instead of being enemies to lovers, Lumity, in the original pitch, went for the friends to lovers trope…kind of.
Luz, in this version, is someone so desperate for positive attention and respect that she latches onto the first person in school that was nice to her. Except that Amity was looking for some quiet and just so happened to look like she was supporting Luz when telling everyone to leave her alone. It was an act of kindness, but not one done in generosity. It still meant the world to Luz, though, making her go ALL IN with friendship. Only to be a little too forward and creeped Amity out to the point where she was polite enough to say “Thank you,” but you could see the desperation in her eyes to be anywhere but next to Luz. Yet Luz doesn’t see that. She’s still too focused that someone was actually nice to her that she blindly follows Amity into a new world just to return a weird looking passport. Because Amity’s Luz’s friend now and friends do nice things to each other. Only for Amity to accidentally reveal that she couldn’t care less for Luz and shatter her hopes and dreams in one fell swoop.
In a weird way, I’d say Luz and Amity are off on a better first impression here than in the original series. There’s no attempted dissections or witch’s duels. Just…Amity trying to be polite in Luz’s presence only to act like your typical mean girl when she THINKS Luz isn’t around. Tossing away the drawing is harsh for sure, but here’s the interesting thing: Amity didn’t know she was talking to Luz at that moment. She didn’t even get rid of the drawing until someone drew (haha) attention to it. If anything, it’s worth noting that Amity still kept the drawing on her. Almost like, despite being weirded out by Luz, Amity felt as though the drawing WAS cute and only got rid of it when she thought someone would question her for having it. Can’t have that Little Miss Perfect status shatter over something some human gave her.
Am I reaching as a Lumity shipper? Oh, most certainly yes. But we all know the inevitable conclusion between these two. We know where they’re headed. Dana has been pretty adamant about wanting it from the start and this pilot sets the groundwork well. Knowing where these two will end up, it’s easy to make connections and hypothesize what means what. Plus, look at the face of shock and amazement on Amity’s face when she sees Luz standing up to Lilith. That looks like a girl who’s…feeling things for this human weirdo. They’re not off to a ROARING start, but I can see how things could improve between Luz and Amity. And who knows, maybe this version of these two might end up dating sooner with how quickly they seem interested in each other. Again, am I reaching? Most definitely, but I went without any new Lumity content for over a year so LET ME REACH!
The point I’m trying to make is that this version of Amity definitely seems a lot more chill and polite at the start, even though it’s likely she still has issues of even being FRIENDS with a human. But not everyone starts off polite.
Lilith: Crazy to think that Lilith started out as…basically a one-off villain like Warden Wrath. At least, that’s what I gathered from the pilot. The pitch bible hints that there COULD be more to her, but at the same time she gets sent to a fire dimension and loses a hand. That’s one-off villain energy if I’ve ever seen it. But if she is meant to be something more, I would love to see what differences could come of her being the headmaster of Hexside instead of Bump and how she could either develop into someone better through Luz’s influence as a student or regress into someone worse as she makes Luz’s school life a living hell. Whatever could come from her, it was kind of fun seeing Lilith act as more of a threat with her…out of nowhere ability to turn into a bat monster. It’s a pretty cool design and I love that it was brought out due to Eda’s constant pestering, proving that Lilith is still the same insecure nut that I love. And it is pretty great that this pilot confirmed that Lilith really did dye her hair to look more serious. You CAN’T tell me that’s not why the Lilith we know ditched the curly red hair.
But that’s about it when it comes to changes towards characters and locations. Let’s talk about the potential differences in the ongoing story.
Luz Stays Trapped Instead of Choosing to Stay: I mean, technically she chose to stay by breaking that key for no reason, but that’s more of a consequence of not thinking things through. She didn’t NEED to break the key, Luz could have just as easily pulled it out. Instead, she kicked the dang thing, leaving herself trapped in this new world. And it’s here that I would like to once again point out how this makes Pilot!Luz different and what’s lost by not including Camila. The Luz WE know would have been more careful. She always felt like someone who fought smarter, not harder, even in that first episode. Luz didn’t fight Wrath head on, she rallied a prison riot that distracted him long enough for her to hit a firework ball into his mouth. She’s intelligent and resourceful, where this one…kind of is? It was smart to send Lilith to the fire dimension, but again, not a great plan to break the key. Plus, without Camila, this doesn’t feel like as big of a deal as it could have been. Camila was the first person in Luz’s mind as she destroyed the portal door in the Season One finale. In the pilot, with no Camila, it feels like a non-sacrifice or even that big of a deal. She’s stuck, sure, but Luz doesn’t really seem to care that much. She feels happy being with Eda and King and doesn’t seem to be in that big of a rush to get home. Plus, it’s not exactly complicated to get back. There was a whole line of portal doors in the beginning that Luz could potentially sneak through and there’s not yet an established cannon that makes it seem like getting a new key would be difficult or even complicated. Once more, it gives the impression that this version of The Owl House would be focused less on personal stakes and more like giving Luz that fantasy adventure she’s always been craving for. It would make for a fun show, but not the SAME show. However, it is worth noting that there could be some potential drama. Especially for one twist that was a JOLT to my system.
EDA WORKS FOR THE EMPEROR?!: WHAT?!
I’ll admit, I feel like the reason why this is so shocking is because of the Eda I know and the Emperor I learned to fear. I mean, Eda, the woman who would sooner eat her own fist before even CONSIDERING helping Belos, even before the witch hunter business, was originally meant to HELP him. Of all the changes that the series could have made, this was by far the biggest. Everything that I thought to be constant turned out to be a lie and I was NOT prepared for it!
But again, the reason why I got that big of a reaction is because it goes against everything I knew about Eda. If this was my first introduction to her, it’d be less of a shocking twist and more of a…hook. Like how Invincible’s first episode (Don’t watch if you’re a baby) ends with a character you THOUGHT you could trust doing this intensely dark thing. The rest of the season is leading you to figure out WHY this was done and how the other characters would react, making you want to see more as the show inevitably leads up to this big conclusion that changes everything you once knew. The same applies here, with the reveal making me wonder why Eda would do this, how long she’s been doing it, how it will affect her relationship with Luz, and whether or not it’d be an easy fix. And much like the ending of Invincible’s first episode (Seriously, NOT meant for babies), this hook makes me interested in wanting to see what comes next. Except I never will know because that came from a version of The Owl House that will never exist.
The pilot is interesting because it shows me what The Owl House COULD have been. I wouldn’t say that it’s better than what we got or even that it’s a better first impression than “A Lying Witch and A Warden.” It’s definitely FUNNIER, I’ll give it that, but it doesn’t make the original pitch better, it makes it different. Everything looks the same and sounds the same, but the overall feel of this pilot makes it something that would have had a different story, tone, and ideas on how to develop these characters. Would I have liked it? Absolutely. It seems like a fun time. But that doesn’t mean I like the show we got any less. This was more like…getting a peek into an alternate universe where a show I already love would have been vastly different. And after over a year without any new Owl House content aside from stuff that fans have made, this was a very pleasant surprise that leaves me excited for the NEW fan content that springs from all this.
But that’s enough talking about a show that could have been made. Time to get back to a series that came into existence and I still love so much. See you all then as you all milk this gift that the internet has given you.

it took me nwar 5 hours but i finally got the reference sheet 4 aphmau in my redesign done 😎😎 under the cut will have some explanations 4 my design choices 😎😎
(reblogs>likes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off-why is she red? in pdh and occasionally in mystreey aphmau has a few red clothes n they just look sm better than the purple im sorry im not wrong,,,,anyways i decided that it would be cool if irene n aphmau wore red instead of purple/blue
markings:the markings aphmau has
first contact:i like that she just appears in the woods i think its funny n whimsy (and also a lot more but thats another post) the only thing she has is a cloak that encompases the entirety of her, nothing else, no memories, no belongings, just a cloak and a name.
loaned clothes: when she arrives at the town of phoenix drop the people give her simple clothes that they can spare, a shirt, a skirt, and a belt. she declines the offer of shoes after trying a pair on.
lordhood: in my rewrite phoenix drop deeply respected their previous lord and their family, leading to them not choosing another lord from the citezens of the town. they refused to choose from outsiders aswell, weary of their motives for seaking loedhood of their village. when aphmau shows up and helps them all, without even knowing what a lord is or what power it could give her, they decide she would be a good fit. because of how deeply phoenix drop respected their previous lords they kept the headpiece bangles and shawl indicitave of the lord status. why is it red? irene is red and its seen as a very lucky color
sleepwear and hair length:just small things i wanted to showcase. the sleepwear is red and aphmau has long as hell hair because she deserves it
formal:in my rewrite, thwre are at least some events, like neighboring weddings of lords or important people, or even meetings of lords to talk business, that means aphmau would have to dress up for.
armor:aphmau was fighting constantly, she wears this most of the time while traveling and if she knows thwres going to be a fight
irene: i wanted something that showcased the glowing tattoos, and looked suitability extravagant. the cloak she wears does have space inside of it, because thats cool. she has wings and the golden horns come together in an almost halo like shape.
the cloak:the cloak, when she wakes up, is the only thing aphmau owns. she wears it with every outfit of hers, aside from the sleepwear. and yes that is space n the universe inside it i love whenever thats a design choice
shoes:where the fuck are they??? idk she hates them. the only time she wears shoes is with her armor n thats it

out of curiosity what's the moment being a hardcore Ruben stan really clicked for you
Really good question, thank you for asking.
I enjoyed when he was onscreen, even on first watch, but that's not exceptional. Brennan does great voices etc, he's a very funny presence, but all this can apply to Gertie, or a billion other NPCs. His art is so huggable, but that wouldn't be it on its own.
He kept growing on me slowly every time I went back through scenes to fact check and he was there. Even when we actually had the episode where we found out about Jace's involvement in his life and the confrontation with Henry, I got more engaged with his character but I wouldn't say I reached my full tipping point quite yet.
But what happened was, there were a couple posts where people thought it might be a trick, and that Henry was being inappropriate. Jace snapped because he was under stress, but ultimately he wasn't wrong in telling Henry to butt out, kind of thing.
I don't want to shame anyone for having that idea, it's a mystery season and I think it's normal and fine to reach for possibilities that stretch what's likely sometimes. But ya know, I went back through the scene to double-check my memories, and get the quote about Jace saying that he didn't even read all of Henry's concerns. (Which I feel like made Jace pretty clearly Wrong in that scene, even if he had turned out to just be a shitty teacher/administrator and not Ankarna-connected.)
And as I was again going back through his scenes and he kept growing on me, I was making more posts about him and realizing how few other people were posting about him in the tag. I got to thinking about it, like
"well hang on, we have this character with a great design. he's presented a lot like the emo equivalent of Zayn's caricature of gothness in season one. they've already investigated and found out he doesn't have a history of being toxic to anyone even though he's famous now and has the opportunities. and we just got huge evidence that the 'maybe some of the RGs are being manipulated and actually fine' that people wanted for Oisin in particular might actually be true for him."
and my first instinct was to check myself and go like "well remember just bc you're super invested in small NPCs doesn't mean anyone else would be, he's actually very minor and has little screentime-HANG ON A MINUTE. he's had more screentime than any other Rat Grinder! So then why-ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" And idk something about this kid who had more people going "maybe his uncle is evil for trying to protect him" than "oh damn we just found out he needs to be protected" made me go you know what. if nobody else is gonna take this corner of fandom than somebody gotta
And I rolled up my sleeves.

just got caught up with bob's burgers, and so far I'm enjoying season 14 much more than I expected to!
not to say I went into these new episodes assuming I wouldn't like them, but certainly the past few seasons (10–12 for sure) have fallen into a rut where like, there's a handful of episodes that are pretty solid, there's one or two that annoy me enough to skip over on any rewatch, and the majority are deeply neutral. the plots are just okay, the jokes are a little lacking, but the fundamental dynamics are still there, and I like those enough that bob's remains one of my go-to shows to have on in the background, even if I don't feel inspired or compelled enough to engage with the show the way I used to
but season 14 has been an unexpected departure (and actually, I think the back half of 13 as well) — it's funny, because I don't actually think the show is as funny as it used to be, but they're taking bigger swings with the plots in a way that's very rewarding to watch! I don't mind that there are fewer jokes, because I'm invested in the more emotional turns the show is taking
like—holy shit, "the amazing rudy"? a standout from start to finish. and I think a great example of what this season is doing in terms of its emotional arcs, and what I'm glad it's leaning into
I've felt very neutral toward bob's the past couple years, because it's felt so staid. there's an accepted level of consistency that bob's or any other animated sitcom maintains, and I get that, but I think the show really really struggled in its recent seasons with honoring that consistency, roughly maintaining the status quo, while also creating plots that were—and this sounds bad to say—but, plots that were interesting. there were a lot of low stakes, anticlimactic resolutions, unexciting premises—situations where there's not a lot of room for the writing to go, and not a lot for the characters to play off
but what I think this latest season is doing so well is leaning into its history, taking advantage of all the episodes of relationships and interactions and story they've developed to create setups that really fucking land! "the amazing rudy" is a phenomenal episode, but would it have hit as well in season 4 or 5, when we've only met rudy a handful of times? maybe, but I think it's so much more rewarding as this late series entry, when it can pay off all the previous mentions of rudy's home life, his relationship with his dad, his relationship with his—until this ep—unseen mom, his hobbies, his anxieties, his friendship with louise, the role the belchers play in his life—it's so good!!
this season is a couple eps shorter from the strike, but really hoping that the rest of the 14 and what's to come in 15 follows the trend, because it feels like the show is finally starting to figure out its voice and its footing again

PCB ESSAY (gone sexual) (gone shitty) (gone trance music) (500 words not enough space to talk about things in detail)
Videogames are becoming increasingly relevant in fine art echelons. Whilst historically dismissed as “lacking in imagination” and “passive”, (Gavinor, 2009) videogames, like films, have the potential to encompass artistic expression, attaining “specialness bracketed off from ordinary life, made seperate” (Dutton, 2006). As videogame graphics and sound design improves, their aesthetic qualities become harder to dismiss. However, just as a photorealistic painting is not more meaningful than an Impressionist painting, a pixelated, old videogame does not hold more art than a photorealistic, 3d rendered videogame like the ones made today.
Take Touhou Youyoumu – Perfect Cherry Blossom, as an example (hereafter referred to as PCB). Released in 2003, the game has a charmingly ametuerism aesthetic to it, from the badly drawn characters to the pixelated displays. It’s the seventh game in the well-known doujinshi bullet hell game series Touhou Project, entirely developed and produced by a single person – Jun’ya “ZUN” Ota. It’s a series well known for its music – Ota intially started making games to showcase his music composition skills (Davison, 2013) and the music in Touhou Project is so iconic that it’s spawned its own satellite community of remixers who thrive entirely off the music written by Ota.
Bullet hell games require a very high level of concentration from the player. One may even call it a “trance state characterized by intense focus” cumulating in the “loss of a strong sense of self – providing access to types of knowledge inaccesabile in non-trance states” (Becker, 1994). The player has no time to think – just react, and the “dexterious manipulation of the fictive prop... becomes muscle memory” (Gavinor, 2009). The electronic musical compositions of Ota help put players into this mindset, “responsible for onset trance” in the player. The music of stage 4 of PCB, as well as the music tracks used for the game;s penultimate boss both share similarities with other genres of music capable of inducing trance states – notably “abrupt changes of rhythm”, “acceleration of tempo” (Rouget, 1980), and “looping collages” (Teles and Boyle, 2015). Stage 4 is unique in that the movements the player must make to avoid bullets mimic the tune of the backing tracks, as it looks as if the player character is dancing. Ota describes the track as “a stratospheric intrusion... violent yet sorrowful” (Ota, 2003). Alternatively, the final boss battle at the end of stage 6 offers a distinctly trancelike musical progression, with two tracks utilized to provide a drastic increase in tempo and mood representing the “rebirth” of the characters in game.
The intention of video game soundtracks is to act as a “territorial zone of protection” (Deleuze and Guatarri, 2004). Ota’s compositions seek to induce a trancelike “altered mental state” (Phillips, 2014) via use of strong, multilayered electronic music. Even the sound affects in such games add to the overall composition, so much so that “paying a game generates a musical product” (Whalen, 2007) Likewise, the playing of PCB is a piece of performance art – like the work of many classic composers, the art is in a state of “becoming” in collaboration with the player, a “living being” as opposed to the “static, preformed object” of a more traditional piece of art (Demers, 2010).
