A light haze filled the atmosphere painting the sky a color gradient of orange and blue. You were enamored by sounds of the chirping of the birds that was accompanied by your daughter’s soft humming— Aurora “Rory” Burrow, who just turned four last month, was quietly walking beside you as she picked up a few dandelions from the ground— humming and skipping as she walked.
Earlier this morning, Rory up ran to you with much more bounce on her step as usual— she politely asked you if you could take her to the park so she could pick flowers for her daddy— the sentiment almost bringing you to tears as you enthusiastically agreed to the idea.
Your husband, Joe has been on the road for three days now for his games and he will be returning tonight— Joe has been working hard and endlessly throughout the season and because of that Rory wants to surprise him.
You later suggested to Rory that you could go and buy flowers at the nearest flower shop from your house but she simply shook her head, no— her little pigtails shaking profusely.
“No! I pick flowers for daddy, mama,” she babbles lifting her chubby arms up showing you her pink princess basket— silently implying that she will be picking those flowers for her daddy.
Seeing the serious yet determined look in her soft face made you giggle in reply. Her baby blue eyes, that shadows Joe’s looking at you with a pleading look as if almost asking you to not stop her.
Nodding your head, you placed kisses after kisses on her soft face— from her cute and squishy cheeks to her forehead, tickling her in the process, earning you a squeal and a hearty laugh from Aurora.
“Of course you can pick daddy flowers, baby! Pick all the flowers you want! Mommy will help you.”
Watching her humming and skipping with her pink basket and denim overalls, you couldn’t help but fawn over your daughter’s love for Joe.
Rory was a daddy’s girl— she has been since day one. She loved spending time with you, from playing her toys with you, dressing up and shopping with you but whenever Joe is around she almost always needs to have his attention— and you don’t blame her, your baby girl got it from you after all.
You were brought out of your thoughts when you heard a soft gasp come from Rory’s mouth.
Looking down you see her cradling her pink basket that was filled to the brim with flowers, however, all her attention was focused on the shop in front of her— that is when you noticed that you two have reached a pet adoption center.
From the corner of your eyes you see Rory up against the glass with her face pressed up on it— her baby blues moving in a lightning pace as she looked at the animals up for adoption in their little houses.
“Mommy, look! Doggy mama! Doggy is sleeping!” Rory whisper yelled as she pointed her small fingers on the glass.
Joining her from her spot, you watched as the small furry brown dog that Rory has been eyeing lifted its head up and carefully watched her before bouncing up and down— its tails wagging excitedly.
The four year old was now jumping up and down copying the dog before turning to you with her big blue eyes and her hands clasped together on her chest, her basket of flowers hanging off her arm.
“Mommy can we get doggy? Pwease? Doggy my fwend.” Rory asked as she continued to look at you with pleading eyes, her baby voice finding it’s way to your heart.
Fuck
You’re screwed.
“Why don’t we go inside and ask the lady about the doggy first, okay, baby?” You crouched to reach her level, negotiating to the best of your abilities.
“Owkay, mommy.” She nodded and smiled at you like the good girl she is.
One thing about your daughter is that no matter how much you and Joe spoil her she was always so polite— from such a young age, whenever she wanted something she would say please, whenever you or Joe say would no to her requests— she nods her little head and says “that’s owkay, next time only.” She is their sweetest girl which is why both you and Joe spoil her anyway because of how polite and understanding she is.
With her small hands grasping on your own— the two of you walked inside the shop, greeting you was one of the employees of the shop.
“Hello, how can I help you today?” She smiles at you and Aurora who waves her little hand, “Hello.”
“Hi, we are wondering about that puppy over there?” You pointed at the brown dog Rory wanted.
The lady nodded her head with a smile before walking over and opening the puppy’s enclosure— the tiny little thing was cradled in her hand. She knelt down towards Rory who had her small arms out already— her mouth open ajar and her eyes wide watching the puppy in awe.
“This is a Maltipoo— a crossbreed between a Maltese and a Poodle.” the lady explains as she carefully placed the puppy onto your daughters awaiting arms, the puppy automatically nuzzled itself closer to Aurora making you pull out your phone from your pocket and taking numerous photos of your daughter.
“This one right here is a ginger Maltipoo and it’s a girl and she is just nine months old— are thinking of adopting her?” She asks and in turn Rory looks up at you again with those pleading eyes.
“Pwease, mommy. She’s my fwend.” your daughter says as she carefully smooshes her cheeks against the puppy’s soft fur.
With a sigh, you crouch down next to her, “My, love we cannot get her now, okay?–” with that said Rory’s little face saddens in dejection as she hugged the puppy closer towards her but nevertheless your ever so sweet girl nodded her head, her baby blue eyes slowly turning misty making your heart ache in the process.
Fuck it you’ll let Joe deal with this.
“How about this— we wait for daddy to come home tonight and you give him the beautiful flowers you picked up earlier and then we ask him if we can get the doggy, okay?” you smiled at her, caressing her soft cheeks to prevent her from crying.
Aurora nodded her head enthusiastically at the reminder of Joe— instantly loving the idea of her daddy meeting her new furry friend.
“Good girl. We need to head home now and wait for daddy— now say goodbye to your friend, we will see her again soon.”
Nodding her head, Rory carefully placed the puppy down on the ground, petting its head as she mumbled her farewell to the dog.
While your daughter was occupied, you turned to the lady next to you and whispered, “Put her on hold for me and can you please prepare the necessary papers cause I’m a hundred percent sure we will be back tomorrow.” You offered a grateful smile before lifting Rory up, carrying her cause she looked exhausted from walking, her arms circling around your neck with her fingers still tightly holding onto her basket.
Before reaching the door you felt movement at the back of your neck— Rory was fiddling with her basket of flowers, turning around, the little girl in your arms, raised her hand as she held out one of the daisies she picked.
“Thank you for taking care of my fwend doggy!” She mutters with a yawn before reaching out to hand it to the lady who held her hand to her chest in awe.
“Thank you.” You bid goodbye, placing a kiss on Rory’s forehead as she nuzzled into your neck— her breath steadying as she lulls herself to sleeps.
Your sweetest girl.
Once you reached home, you tucked Aurora in bed for her nap before cooking dinner and tidying up the house for Joe’s arrival— your husband just texted you saying that he was on his way home and you couldn’t be more excited.
The wide range of flowers that Rory had picked out was now tied together with the sparkly pink ribbon that she made earlier this morning— the once scattered and separated flowers now forming a bouquet.
An hour has passed and your little girl waddles out of her room, her tiny hands rubbing the remnants of sleep in her eyes as she clutches her tiger plushy with her other hand.
And before she could even ask, the gates of your house opened, the sound of the car engines filling your ears— Joe is home.
You couldn’t help the smile forming your face as you looked at the main door— you missed Joe, it’s has only been three days and you couldn’t help but think about the cliche of it feeling like three years.
“Daddy is home, baby!” You whispered to Rory as you handed her the baby bouquet of flowers she’s going to give Joe.
And on queue, Joe walks in the front door in all his glory— his luggage and duffel bag on both his hands completely discarded as Aurora bounded straight at him.
“Daddy!”
Joe catches Rory mid jump, cradling her to his chest— his stature making your daughter look smaller than she already was.
“Hi, princess. Daddy missed you so much.” Joe says as he kissed all over Rory’s face making her giggle.
“Miss you too, Daddy. Daddy, look! I pick flowers for you!” Rory proudly lifted up the bouquet of flowers in her hand and presented it to Joe with a huge smile on her face— a smile your husband has always claimed was yours.
Joe took one look at the flowers and he beamed instantly— taking the bouquet from his daughters hands, his fatigue from the training, the games, and the flight instantly melting away.
“Did you pick them, baby?” Joe asked still carrying his daughter who was now playing with his hair.
“Yes, mommy helped me!” Rory smiles before pressing her face deeper into the crook of Joe’s neck.
With that said, Joe lifted his head, his baby blues meeting yours as you leaned against the wall watching your two loves.
Joe sauntered towards you, landing himself in front of your face— his frame easily towering over you as he continued to softly rub Rory’s back who was still recovering from her nap.
“Hey, mama.” Joe smirked at you before leaning down and catching your lips in his— your husbands lips soft as you can remember, kissing you delicately with so much passion.
“Missed you so much, Joey.” you murmured, placing your head at the other side of his neck, facing Rory who was fighting the urge to fall back asleep.
“Missed you too, baby— so fucking much.” Joe whispered for only you to hear, placing a kiss on both your forehead and Rory’s.
Something must have reminded Rory about today cause she gasps so hard, she scared you and Joe out of your little bubble.
“What is it, Rory?” Joe asked worriedly as he watched her wiggle down from his hold.
“Daddy! I met a new fwend today!” she smiled up at him as she bounced up and down.
Oh shit. Here we go.
“Oh yeah? Where did you meet them, princess?” Joe chuckled while sitting himself down on the sofa, Aurora trailing after him.
“At the pet store, daddy— and mommy said to ask you before we take her home with us!” She continued to gush, placing herself onto Joe’s lap.
In an instant Joe’s eyes snap towards you— his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
You simply sat down next to him, “I’m sorry” you mouthed at him— apologizing for putting him on the spot to decide for his daughter.
“The doggy, my fwend daddy! Can we get her pwease? Pwease daddy?— she’ll get lonely. Please?” Rory looks straight into Joe’s eyes who was staring at her stoically.
Joe likes his peace and his space. That peace is his safe place— which was your house. The house you two built even when you two were just dating— this space is where he rests both his body and mind, away from the hustle and bustle of his career.
Joe loves his job but sometimes, he needs his peace and quiet— having Aurora didn’t disrupt his peace or his space in any way. In fact your little girl improve it.
Joe would play with Rory, sleep with her on his chest, watch Disney movies with her, and he would call it rest.
Now a dog, a puppy no less— in your head will disrupt your husband’s peace and quiet for sure. Which is why you were so hesitant to say yes to Rory earlier today.
Joe loves animals, he really does, but owning one is not something he has the time for— especially dogs. In all of your years of knowing Joe, he has always been more of a cat person— which made sense considering he is a giant cat himself, attitude wise.
Understandably so, Joe was hesitant to even open his mouth but upon looking down his little girl, both you and Joe knew the answer to her question.
“A doggy is a big responsibility, baby. You have to take care of her.”
That’s a yes.
“Yes daddy!”
“You have to bathe her and feed her, my love.” Joe continues.
That’s a yes.
“I will, daddy!”
“You also have to take her to walk and play.”
You weren’t sure if Joe was reminding Aurora of her newfound responsibilities or if he was psyching himself out for his new responsibilities— that’s still a yes though.
“I pwomise I’ll take good care of her, daddy.”
And just like that you three found yourself at the same adoption center the next day— Joe was signing the papers you have asked for the previous day as Rory cradles the puppy she now calls Goldie, animatedly talking to her new friend.
“Thank you, Mr and Mrs. Burrow! I’ll be right back with the remaining items and then you’re free to go.” The lady says before excusing herself to pack all the additional stuff we bought for Goldie— ranging from a pink fluffy bed to every dog clothes one could own.
You and Joe quietly watched Rory play with Goldie with smiles on your faces.
You turned to your husband with a smirk on your face, “You just couldn’t help it can you?” you teased him, implying his lack of control when it comes to spoiling his daughter.
Joe looks at you with his eyebrow raised, “She has those puppy dog eyes, baby. How could I say no to that? And she’s an angel so why not?” He shrugged as if he didn’t just spend half a million dollars on a puppy.
“Those are your eyes, Joey baby” you point out the exact likeness of Aurora and Joe’s eyes— your favorite baby blues.
“Yeah? But those are your techniques, my love— if I’m not mistaken.” Your husband turns his body towards you, leaning his face closer to yours.
“The begging, the pouting, the puppy dog eyes. Rory might have my eyes, baby— but that right there, that’s all you, mama.” Joe mutters under his breath as he pointed at Rory who was busy playing with Goldie right next to you.
“Got me giving you everything you wanted, huh? She got it from you, you know?” Joe chuckles as he watches the redness creep up your cheek upon the realization.
Shrugging your shoulders, you looked at Joe up and down before saying, “Don’t complain now. You love spoiling me— now you have two of us.”
“I’m not complaining, my love, just stating the facts— and yes I do love spoiling you. Love spoiling both my girls.”

hi anj!! what would you say is ur favorite psych episode?🌱
oooo i dont usually get questions like this :] in general i prefer the earlier seasons for a few reasons but thats pretty typical of me for like any show lol anyways i Cannot pick one so of course big fan of shawn takes a shot in the dark + lassie did a bad, bad thing because i love when a goofy show goes a little serious, BUT still maintains silly moments....if its all serious whats the Point imo any halloween/horror type episode is a hit in my book....scary sherry, shawn (and gus) of the dead, tuesday the 17th yang episodes also rule, but i like the first two more than the last one lmao as far as later episodes i really like lassie jerky, 1967: a psych odyssey, and nightmare on state street lmao

Heizou + Candy Apples
The bright red maple leaves of Inazuma fell gently onto the ground and whisked through the quiet wind as you and Heizou walked through the streets of Inazuma City, hands and fingers loosely intertwined.
It was calm and quiet, only the sound of chatter from the other visitors filling the air. Your hands swung back and forth, a light smile grazing your face. That was until you felt a sudden pull on your hand, as if you were being dragged away.
The detective you called your boyfriend was now pulling you along with him, but not enough to hurt you. “Heizou! Slow down, what the hell-” you called out to him, confused on why he was so suddenly running.
“Aw, C’mon, Y/n! Don’t you smell that?” He laughed, not caring to turn back and face you.
“Smell what?” You said puzzled. Heizou huffed dramatically before stopping and pointing to the cart standing just a few feet away, a worker stood in front of it handing out candy apples with a warm smile on their face.
“It’s candy apples! C’mon, lets get some!” He jumped excitedly, almost as if he was a child. He was right though, they smelled really good and you were quite hungry. Besides, it was fall now and what better way to kick off the season than having candy apples together with your boyfriend.
Kaeya + Halloween Party
“Y/n! Over here!” you heard as soon as you walked into the knight’s headquarters. Your eyes searched around until you saw Amber waving at you from the opposite side of the corridor, excitement was present in her eyes.
You smiled back and walked over toward her. The two of you complimented each other’s costumes and caught up with each other for a bit. It didn’t last long before a gloved hand made its way to your shoulder and pulled you into someone’s side.
“Well, well, well,” someone said from beside you, “What do we have here?”
“Shut up, Kaeya,” you jokingly rolled your eyes.
His eyes widened and he feigned a hurt expression, “Now, that is no way to treat your boyfriend, Y/n.”
Your eyes squinted once you turned to face him, “Kaeya, you can’t be my boyfriend without a costume. Literally who shows up to a halloween party without a cosutme!”
“What? I am wearing a costume!”
“No you’re not.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Really? Because it looks like what you wear everyday,” you deadpanned. He placed a hand over his heart, the fake hurt expression from earlier once again making its way back onto his face. Amber laughed and walked away from the petty argument, you hadn’t even noticed her leave.
“No I’m not, I’m dressed as a pirate!”
You had half a nerve to slap him right then and there, instead, you burst out laughing. Some of the other knights had even looked over to see what all the commotion was, but ignored it nevertheless. You weren’t phased by it though, in fact, you were too consumed by your laughter.
“There- There is no way, you’re being serious right now!” You held your stomach as you continued to laugh.
“Stop laughing…I’m serious, Y/n. Stop laughing!”
Albedo + Apple Cider
“Shit it’s cold out here,” you spoke as you shivered, hands tucked under your armpits to try to keep warm. Albedo glanced at you, a frown making it’s way onto his face.
“Really? It seems quite warm here compared to Dragonspine,” he thought aloud. The two of you stopped walking, choosing to stand next to the fountain for a moment. It was only October, yet the air felt freezing cold as you and Albedo took a late night walk in Mondstadt’s city gates. If anything, you were happy you weren’t in Dragonspine right now.
Albedo looked down at himself, all he had on was his normal lab coat, but without the sleeves, he knew it would do no good to keep you warm. “I apologize, I do not have anything to keep you warm. Perhaps, you could take my gloves though?”
Without hesitation, you took them from his hands. It barely did anything to help though. Your teeth were chattering now and Albedo was getting more and more worried.
“Here, come sit down for a second,” the alchemist said as he guided you to a nearby bench. Luckily, it was wooden so it wasn’t too cold unlike the stone ones. You wrapped your arms around your torso, leaning forward as you watched him walk off toward the Good Hunter.
A few moments later, your blonde haired boyfriend returned, two cups in his hand. He carefully sat down next you before handing you one of them, “They were selling hot apple cider, I believe this could help to warm you up.”
You smiled and drank it quickly, almost burning your tongue. “Careful, now,” Albedo spoke again, a light laugh falling from his lips.
You sipped it carefully and Albedo moved to put his arm around you. Mentally, he made a note to start wearing an actual coat. You looked so cute wearing his gloves and sipping on the cider, Albedo smiled at the sight. He could only imagine what you would look like wearing one of his coats.
Yelan + Scary Story Telling
“…Some say he died of natural causes, but everyone knows it’s actually because he brutally murdered everyone and then killed himself, allowing him to haunt the building forever.”
“Y/n?” Yelan spoke after a moment of silence. She turned to face you, who was lying next to her in bed, only to find you with a ghostly look on your face and a frightened stare.
An hour ago, you and Yelan were supposed to go to bed for the night. However, since it was nearing Halloween, Yelan thought it would be a fun idea to tell scary stories. It turned out to not be so fun after all now that you were practically shaking in fear next to her.
Yelan smirked for a moment, proud of herself for successfully scaring you. Her laugh suddenly rang out in your ears and you frowned. “That is so not funny.”
You turned away from her and pulled the covers over yourself. Yelan’s laughter gently faded out and a quiet but warm smile grazed her face. Her eyes softened as she looked at you.
Carefully, she wrapped her arms around your waist and pulled you toward her so that your back was against her torso. “I’m sorry for scaring you, do you forgive me?”
You huffed out a sigh and turned around in her arms, gently laying your head against her chest and shutting your eyes. “I guess I can forgive you,” you sleepily murmured.
“Good,” she said quietly, “But I gotta say, your face was priceless.”
“Yelan!”
Scaramouche + Handing Out Candy
The sound of kids running through the street and the light wind sifting through the leaves was the only sound filling the air. It was nice, something calming to zone out to. A dazed look was on your face as you smiled at all the kids enjoying the Halloween festivities.
The sound someone spitting something out followed by a “Ugh, that’s fucking disgusting.” was what snapped you out of your trance. Your eyes snapped to your boyfriend who was sitting next to you, a grimace on his face and a candy wrapper now on the floor.
“Did you seriously just eat a piece of the candy? That’s for the kids, Scaramouche!” You exclaimed.
“So? I wanted to try it. Though I shouldn’t have seeing as it tasted like the worst thing I’ve ever eaten in my life,” he countered, ”I mean, seriously, what kids even eat this shit?”
You rolled your eyes at him and snatched the bowl from his hands, “C’mon, can’t you be nice for once? It’s Halloween!”
“Shut up. You taste it then and then you’ll be on my side instead of these creepy little demon children.”
“You just ate the last piece of that candy thou-” you were cut off by Scaramouche placing his lips directly on yours, the flavors of the candy now on your tongue. When he stepped back, he smirked at you, prepared for you to agree with him.
“The candy tastes fine to me,” you paused for a second, a smile pulling at your lips, “Though, maybe it’s just your breath.”
Scaramouche’s smile fell from his face in an instant, “I’ll kill you- hey! Get back here, Y/n!”
Ayaka + Full Moon
The first time you met her it was like love at first sight for you. Your hands were all clammy and your heart starting racing. She was your first crush, and you were sure she would be your last. No one could compare to her.
“Wow,” you breathed out in awe as you stared up at the night sky. You had practically whispered it, but Ayaka still heard you. Her eyes followed your line of sight and she gazed up at it too. It was Halloween and there was a full moon, it was perfect.
“You always have loved the moon, haven’t you?” she spoke, voice soft as always. You only nodded, still staring up at it. On the contrary, her eyes drifted back to you.
She had been walking you out for the night and you were just about to say goodbye. Yet, here you were, still at the Estate standing side by side. Neither of you wanted to leave the other.
Ayaka’s hand grabbed yours gently, pulling you out of your trance. She knew you loved the moon, how could she not? So, with her mind made up, she interlocked her fingers with yours and pulled you a little closer.
You hadn’t known that she liked you back, but maybe tonight you could. Maybe tonight, Ayaka could finally tell you how she felt.
Tighnari + Autumn Rain
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
You turned toward Tighnari as you stood up from the forest ground, a confused look on your face, “What’s wrong?”
He nearly rolled his eyes at you, “It’s cloudy out, meaning it’s probably going to rain…again. And that means we have to postpone work for another day. Why does it have to rain so damn much during the fall.”
You held back the urge to laugh, “Are you serious? It’s just rain, it’s not gonna kill your work.”
The forest watcher was about to argue again but was interrupted by a small droplet of water landing on his face. He let out an annoyance laced sigh and began to grab his things. More droplets began to fall and fast — almost as fast as his mood was dropping.
“Archons, c’mon, Y/n, let’s go ba-” Tighnari stopped mid-sentence, his bag would’ve fallen off his shoulder if you hadn’t grabbed it in time. You were about to keep walking when his arm suddenly shot out and pulled you back against him, “You can’t go out there, it’s pouring and you’ll get all of our equipment wet.”
You fought back the flushed feeling you had just gotten and gently removed his arm from in front of you — it was certainly not helping the developing crush you had on him. “It’s just a little autumn rain, Tighnari. We can’t wait under these plants forever. Besides, we literally live in a rainforest.”
“No, we can’t risk ruining our equipment with the water. And I don’t want you getting sick,” he spoke calmly. You nearly felt your heart beat out of your chest.
You carefully took off your backpack and laid it against a rock, Tighnari did the same. As the two of you settled down, Tighnari began to gently smile to himself as he glanced at you. Even though the weather conditions were less than ideal, Tighnari knew it was the perfect time to finally confess his feelings for you.
Dehya + Leaves
“Archons, have I ever mentioned how much I hate being in the rainforest?” Dehya grumbled. You giggled in response.
“Only a million times,” you responded. A small smile was still on your face. It was always so comical for you whenever you had the chance to walk through Sumeru City with Dehya. It made her so pouty sometimes. She found it annoying, but you found it rather cute.
Not that she knew that, of course.
The silence between the two of you was comfortable. You had stopped walking as you stopped in front of the door to your house. Dehya hesitantly stopped, her hand dropping from your arm. You brushed over the spot, feeling a little cold now that it was gone.
You giggle softly again and the same frown from earlier returned to Dehya’s face. Your hand reached up to her hair and she leaned back a bit, flustered.
“What are you doing?” she whispered as you walked closer, her eyes widening. Any closer, and your lips could’ve touched.
But you quickly retreated and your hand retracted from her hair. You held something up to her face as you slyly smiled.
“There was a leaf in your hair.”

After watching these two new episodes- It seems like the show is trying to show us Stede and Ed’s roles were reversed. Stede, now the celebrated killer who has all the fame and glory, and Ed, embracing a quieter, more stable lifestyle and leaving his killing ways in the past.
I would say they both had a strong effect on each other, but it's much more complex than that. A very interesting shift has happened in both of them. Firstly, it's obvious Ed has been affected by Stede heavily. He threw away his leather clothing, and he sold his "poison" (aka treasure) for "positivity," he is following Stede's advice and is extremely receptive to it. He wants to live this quieter and more peaceful lifestyle. As well, he expects Stede to want to live this with him, because after all, Stede is the one who made him want it.
Now, here is where you'd expect Stede to have a shift to be more similar to Ed.. and I believe that is what the show is trying to make you see.. but that's not quite the case. Stede is becoming more ruthless now, he killed a man in cold blood. He does appear to be disturbed by this for a moment, but when Blackbeard goes to check on him only a few minutes later, I won't say what happened but... it's obvious he has gotten over it. Stede continues with his more ruthless lifestyle throughout the next episode and doesn't seem to be affected by his actions at all. There are many little examples of Stede's more dangerous behavior / tendencies throughout this episode, as small as getting his ear pierced, but most notably, he lit a man on fire and laughed about it. That is extreme for Stede. Keep in mind, he accidentally killed a man a season earlier and was so disturbed by it he hallucinated the man multiple times. Now he's laughing while killing someone. He has undergone a serious shift.
Ed heavily expects Stede to be messed up by this stuff, for the bloody, messed-up part of the pirate lifestyle to not suit him well. Ed even actively advises against Stede killing Ned, and recalls how painful his first cold-blooded murder was. He doesn't want Stede to kill him, he wants him to let it go. So it seems here that Stede isn't becoming more like Ed at all... he's becoming more like Blackbeard. This is why I believe Ed panicked and left Stede. He saw too much of his former self in him now, and didn't know what to do or how to get the Stede he thought he knew back.
Anyway, I find this role reversal and its implications very fascinating- I'm already writing follow up a post talking more about it- because I have so much to say about this. Absolutely incredible writing and so much to dissect.
(PS: My prediction: Once Ed calms down from his panic, he and Stede will talk it through and make up, and decide to actually go slow in their relationship this time. I'm not too worried about the long-term effects of this.)

Why do you think Helluva Boss is better, in terms of writing?
OOOH i have a LOT to say about this.
I think it's a lot less rushed. it FEELS a lot less rushed. And thats not saying its all perfect, it went pretty fast too, but not as fast as hazbin.
For example, hazbin had this big deadline and they had to fit in angels arc, the carmilla/vaggie situation, the heaven stuff, AND charlies shit with her dad. So despite it being a comedy, they had to stuff a LOT of things together, which means theres less chance for filler which means it gets rushed. (bc honestly, it feels less like a comedy and more like an edgy teen humor show BECAUSE they're stuffing the comedy in while rushing to get all the important lore bits in)
so helluva boss feels more like a comedy. they have serious moments, but it leaves space for jokes and humor that dont feel out of place (for example, in the hh finale they kept making jokes that rlly didnt fit? like charlie profusely apologizing to angels who are slaughtering her people? or when pentious died and it was a joke but we were supposed to take it seriously???)
helluva boss has episodes with less emotional baggage in them, like the pilot, murder family, spring broken, and CHERUB, and the harvest moon festival, all in season one. and while they do HAVE emotional moments, theyre not super heavy. then you have episodes that feel like a mix, like truth seekers and loo loo land. and then you have heavy episodes like ozzie's and queen bee. its much more balanced (and im focusing on s1 of hb bc its unfair to pit a two season show against a one season show.)
also also also, and this is smth i complain about a lot, Hazbin Hotel is OBSESSED with making their characters as likeable as possible. unfortunately this falls on characters who DONT DESERVE IT. Like angel dust. When he harassed husk, it was supposed to be humor and funny and whatever, but when husk snapped at him, he was the bad guy suddenly. and angel still never apologized. and im not saying hb doesnt have that issue (ESPECIALLY with stolas) but i think its handled better.
blitzo is a good example. i have complaints about the circus situation, but in the end hes still not a good guy, excuse or not. he's rude, he's nosy, he's dismissive. he hunts his sister down despite her making it very clear she doesnt wanna see him. and he brushes off stolas and even uses him under the guise of a sweet date. in general, blitzo is just waaay better handled than angel dust is.
i also like the villains more? theyre not made out to be a joke as much as the villians in hazbin (per my earlier statement about all the humor being stuffed in) crimson is made to be genuinely intimidating, striker, while mocked a lot, is still a very serious villain, mammon is a big joke on purpose, and it makes sense! and then other antagonists (verosika, one and two, ect) are made out to be funny because theyre NOT big villains, they're just bitches who have beef with imp. the worst villain in hb is, of course, the one woman, stella. but thats a conversation for another ask.
meanwhile the hazbin villains are sooo dumbed down. our most serious villain was lute. adam was a huge joke and relatively annoying at times? like most of what he did was watered down by bad jokes (like killing pentious??? ppl seem to forget adam beat alastor without even tearing his clothes and its because everytime hes on screen theres a terrible joke about to be made) and the vees are just??? eh??? i dont have a TON of complaints about velvette aside from how little she actually did to the point where she hardly feels like a villain? shes moreso just annoying. and then vox hypnotizes people and hes like. evil ceo type shit but thats overshadowed by his crazy ass beef with alastor because again, he didnt do much else. and then val had that stupid scene with vox that i hate so so so so much. hes made out to be funny when he SHOULDNT BE!!! They dont take val's character seriously its weird. ick. and also we didnt have many villains to even go off of? helluva boss gave us lots of characters to work with in season one, and all of them are unique in some way, and had time to shine and will have more time to shine later because the story isnt rushing. hazbin INSISTED on concluding this arc in one season when it really shouldn't have. they didnt have the time to do it, and they tried anyway. helluva boss is better because they gave it TIME. striker is introduced in season one and we KNOW he'll come back because he got away! and he does! and hes great because they gave him TIME to be there and be gone and be there and be gone.
and now he's our most recurring villain. and i think hes awesome. crimson didnt actually have a lot of time to vanish and come back, but hes also new so its a bit different. and he had two episodes in between showing up and disappearing, and the second one had more focus on striker anyways.
i think that while hazbin is a 4/10 for me (5 if im being generous), helluva boss is a 6 or 7/10. the worst part about the helluva boss writing is stolas's family and how the women are written tbh.
tldr: helluva boss is better paced and the characters are better, and hazbin hotel is too rushed and forces these characters onto you

Leoncavallo: La Bohème, Act I - Mimì Pinson, la biondinetta - Rosina Storchio (1911)
On May 6th, 1897, Mahler was in attendance at the Teatro La Fenice, in Venice, to hear the world premiere of “La Bohème” opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo, since this title was programmed for the upcoming season of the Wiener Staatsoper. . Mahler was also present at La Fenice the preceding night to hear Puccini’s Bohème, which he had heard during its premiere one year earlier. Upon listening to both versions, he was convinced that Leoncavallo's work was clearly inferior to Puccini's. . Mahler strongly advised Wilhelm Jahn -- who still was director of the Wiener Staatsoper -- that Leoncavallo’s opera should not be performed in Vienna. But Jahn had excellent relations with the composer, so, in June, he signed a “more than modest” contract to produce Leoncavallo’s Bohème.
During Mahler’s time as the conductor of the Wiener Staatsoper, Leoncavallo's La Bohème had a total of 6 performances. Puccini's, which had its premiere in Vienna in 1903, had a total of 61.
On This Day: 6 May: Leoncavallo’s La Bohème Was Premiered.
That work premiered at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice on 6 May 1897, roughly one year after Puccini presented his setting at the Teatro Regio in Turin. Both librettos are based on the novel Scènes de la vie de bohème, originally published in serial form by Henri Murger in 1851, who subsequently turned these loose stories into a coherent play. A scholar writes, “there is some recent evidence to suggest that the scenario on which both operas are based was probably Leoncavallo’s.”
Since Puccini and Leoncavallo worked on their respective works at the same time, it was almost inevitable that a conflict of authorship would arise. Leoncavallo claimed that he had previously offered Puccini a completed libretto. As such, Leoncavallo claimed precedence over the subject. In addition, he asserted Puccini knew all along that he was working on the opera. Puccini responded to the accusation the following day in an open letter to Il corriere della sera, claiming that he had been working on his own version for some time, and felt that he could not oblige Leoncavallo by discontinuing the opera. He also “welcomed the prospect of competing with his rival and allowing the public to judge the winner.” A musicologist writes, “A mutual influence was certainly exercised by the assumption each composer made about his adversary’s libretto and musical style. The deletion of the ‘atto del cortile’ from Puccini’s opera may be seen as a direct consequence of his acquaintance with Leoncavallo’s libretto, whereas Leoncavallo, in the later version of his opera entitled Mimì Pinson, tried to adopt the inverse order of vocal roles, which by that time had been accepted by Puccini’s public.”
A comparison of both works reveals interesting dramatic and musical differences. Leoncavallo adhered closer to Murger’s novel, “disclosed by literary and musical quotations which permeate his libretto and score.” It has been suggested that Leoncavallo approached the work with the realism demanded from verismo opera. In Puccini’s opera it remains unclear, which of the four Bohemian friends is the musician, whereas Leoncavallo immediately identifies Schaunard as the composer. He performs his own composition; a cantata parody in Act 2, accompanying himself on the piano while the orchestra remains silent.
“For one moment the listener has the illusion of being at a party rather than at the opera.” In general, stage music plays a greater role as part of the action in Leoncavallo’s setting, as “he conceives this music as being part of an outside reality grafted onto his work.” And while Puccini balances the contrast between joyous and serious moments and their musical accompaniments in all four acts, Leoncavallo introduces a complete break at the beginning of Act 3. The first two acts are comic opera depicting Bohemian life, while acts 3 and 4 “unmask the carefree exuberance of the first two acts a main affect and unreal. The comedy is but a façade.”
We might also take a quick look at how Leoncavallo, compared to Puccini, deals with Mimi’s illness. For Puccini, Mimi is ill right from the beginning, and illness is an integral part of her personality. As listeners, we always have the suspicion that her illness is the primary reason why Rodolfo falls in love with her. To be sure, the sense of poverty in Mimi’s life is “not unconnected with her illness, but the dominating impression is of a fatality.” In Leoncavallo’s setting, Mimi falls ill during the action as the unmistakable result of her circumstances.
“With no money, she is prematurely discharged from the hospital, and her death is no more than the natural consequence of a medical system perverted by capitalism. Sorrow at her death is mingled with anger at the horrid conditions that caused it.” After the highly successful première of Leoncavallo’s La Bohème, both works coexisted for a decade but Leoncavallo’s work proved less attractive to a broader public. The “impact of Puccini’s musico-dramatic vision and the superiority of his musical invention eventually made history decide against Leoncavallo.”

I'm not sure if you heard the news yet but rooster teeth is getting shut down by Warner Bros and Warner Bros is trying to sell RWBY off to another company at the moment
I hope that the people working at rooster teeth are able to get jobs or have jobs that they can help tie them over till they find new work for a while
And maybe if we're lucky when it comes to RWBY some company will maybe pick them up this year and will possibly get volume 10 by the end of next year or the year after that we'll just have to wait and see I'm not sure if they're still doing RWBY beyond that they were planning to do to cover some stuff that was happening with long and I but I hope the future for this franchise gets better and that this isn't the end
Hi there anon-chan. Yes, I have heard the news about RT shutting down. Heard it as soon as it came out yesterday. I just don’t have much to comment on the matter since I’m still pretty much processing it.
I mean, I’ve been hearing certain-certain Youtubers making bold statements about the end of RT for quite some time now; given all of its recent scandals. But even then, I still sorta wished to hold out on the belief that what they were saying wasn’t entirely true.
I mean, I know RT has definitely been under fire for a while but that was mainly due to the actions of some of the folks that were working in the company. And even then, I was of the opinion, that all the problematic people bringing the company down would just be removed, leaving RT itself to basically rebuild its reputation and get back in the good spirits of both its fans and potential investors; y’know what I mean?
Bottomline, I didn’t want to believe the possibility of RT shutting down since I thought they would’ve been able to make  a comeback somehow. At least when it comes to RWBY.
I’ll be frank with you m’fam. Outside of RWBY (and maybe Red Vs. Blue and Camp Camp; even though I haven’t caught up on those series since their earlier seasons), I have no other personal investment in RT.
I mainly followed RT for RWBY and the members of the CRWBY who worked on it. And even now, in light of the news of its upcoming shut down, I’m more concerned for what the future of RWBY will be beyond RT.
In respect to the CRWBY, I’m genuinely not that worried for them finding work since they’re all very talented creatives who are very, very good in their craft. So I definitely have high hopes for them scoring new work after RT. No doubts about that.
I have heard about WB trying to sell RWBY though; and this is where my main concern lies. I am worried about who RWBY will be sold to next or whether anyone will pick up the IP at all. I know some FNDM members like to hype up RWBY as this big deal series. However, the reality is, outside of the FNDM, RWBY honestly isn’t as well-known as some folks may think. Especially when you consider the fact that all the negatives of RWBY are talked about just as much; maybe even more so than the positives of it.
Tumblr media
In the realm of potential buyers for RWBY, I don’t have high hopes for this because, isn’t this not what happened to  GenLock? Who do we blame for the fall of that IP? RT or WB? Didn’t they not “sell” GenLock over to HBO and they ended up butchering the hell out of its second season?
Either way, I don’t want the same to happen to RWBY. It’s already butchered enough by the way RT and its showrunners have been handling it since V3.
My one saving grace is a tweet from Dillon Goo. Apparently, he’s an animator who formerly worked on RWBY back in the days of Monty. Yesterday on Twitter, he expressed interest in purchasing the rights to RWBY to continue the series along with his team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know how serious he is about this but I have seen some of his work and it’s actually quite good. I would rather RWBY go to the hands of someone who worked on the show and seems  genuinely passionate about continuing the series and its story as opposed to it going to some mega-money corporate conglomerate who are only interested in making money off the franchise and don’t really give a rat’s ass about its story or appealing to its fanbase.
As a long time fan of RWBY, all I want is for the series to be given to someone who actually gives a shit about RWBY.
Not just as a franchise name but as a story with characters and a world they genuinely enjoyed and wished to continue and expand upon out of a genuine love for it.
Whether that’s continuing from where the original CRWBY Writers left off or rebooting the story from the ground up, I just want RWBY to be handled by creatives who care about it and want to tell a good story with it.
No senseless pandering that serve nothing for the story or appeasing the “woke crowd” or whatever!
Just telling a genuinely GOOD and CONSISTENT story with these characters and the world they live in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rather RWBY be handed over to a fan whose got the money, time and most importantly, the drive to keep the story going rather than another who just wants to milk it for its “brand”.
Ironically, this is what RT has sadly been doing with RWBY for the past couple of years. Since the dawn of its existence, RWBY has spawned books, comics, manga, videogames (console as well as mobile), its own movie (albeit it’s a crossover) and even its own Japanese anime adapation. All these different novelties that were supposed to help expand the world of Remnant and look how far it got it?
Pretty much nowhere because we got all of this expanded material for RWBY and we’re still nowhere close to finishing the main core story from the OG 3D animated series.
Speaking of, regarding the fate of RWBY Beyond, I’m not sure myself anon-chan. I was of the naive notion that since RWBY returning to RT and the debut of RWBY Beyond were announced prior to the news of RT’s shutdown that the company would still move forward with this move and it would mark the official send off for not only RWBY but the company that made it as well. That’s what I was hoping for and what I’m still hoping for since I don’t recall their being an official date for RT’s shut down.
We know the company is dead, we just don’t know the date of the funeral, basically. So until that time comes, I’m gonna innocently hope we still get to see RWBY Beyond before RT shuts down.
I can live with RT shutting down and even RWBY ending if RWBY Beyond is treated as the official final chapter to the story. But that’s just me.

Hi, I just got around to watching ethos pov and when cleo asks abt joining team ties. She words it like do you have space on your team for another person and before she could clarify that she meant for herself. Etho asks if its for bdubs and now im just wondering if he would have said yes if so. And how that potentionally would have gone over with the other ties seeing as they were calling bdubs dead weight earlier
YEA YEA that moment cracked me up a little bit because like. etho. he really just assumed bdubs... I'm a little conflicted honestly on whether he would have said yes so i'm just gonna use this ask to outline some general observations i've made about etho's character and you can draw your own conclusions about what might have gone down.
Firstly, Etho this series is giving me major survivalist vibes. I noticed that right from the very beginning of his episode he was constantly moving and progressing in the game as much as he could. He was resource gathering a ton and even had the beginnings of a mob farm... for gunpowder and bones specifically. This, along with how he was on high alert all episode, makes me think that he actually has a grasp on how much time does matter even now in the early game. Something that really stuck in my head the whole episode was the line from Tango in Last Life session seven--"He's a survivor, that's what he does."
Every season Etho tends to take his lives very seriously and that's no exception now. Unless he has some very bad luck, I'd be surprised if he's not one of the final players or even the winner.
With all that in mind... lets talk about Bdubs and his actions!
As funny as Bdubs was in killing Skizzleman, he's kinda put a target on his back. No matter what happens next session, Skizz will be going yellow next session, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bdubs is an early target for Skizz if he decides to kill for more time (or if he rolls boogey). Bdubs made a serious error there, and I think he may regret it.
Combine that, with the fact that Etho is currently teamed with Skizz... I have to doubt that he'd take Bdubs as an ally right now, which pains me to say a lot.
BUT I will also add that I doubt Etho will stick around on team T.I.E.S with Skizz being yellow next session. I get the vibes that he's not as attached to the team as the other three are, and with the danger Skizz will pose to him... idk. I wouldn't be shocked if their team fell apart within next session or the one after. And from there, who knows! Maybe a clethubs team up is on the cards after all! I just don't know.
But, lets go back to your point about team ties calling Bdubs deadweight in last life and what might have happened if Etho did take Bdubs with him! Personally... I think that they'd have taken Bdubs... but most likely betrayed him early on down the line.
If anyone has further thoughts on this I'd love to hear!!

It’s interesting how when Tenn got upset at Riku for his stunt, he specifically referred to their parents as the reason.
Tumblr media
During this scene, I had expected Tenn to say something more general or generic like “You could have gotten hurt” or “That was so dangerous. Why did you take such a risk?”. Or at most on a personal level (because how serious the situation looked), “Don’t know you know how worried you made me?”
But here, he specifically mentions the concerns from the perspective of their parents.
One reason may be because of what happened at the end of Second Beat (when IDOLiSH7 and TRIGGER try to confront imposter Zero)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(funny enough, this was also on episode 15. Well played, Troyca)
If Tenn feels like his scoldings don’t have the same effect on Riku because they’re “no longer family”, then it makes sense why he’d tried to appeal to Riku’s concern for their parents instead of something more general or personal coming from Tenn (which if that is really the case, then wow. Props to Tenn for thinking about that on the spot, despite the situation he was in).
Another reason (and far more heavily into speculation territory. Please take it with a grain of salt):
I don’t think Tenn mentioned only their parents as a way to deliberately mask his own concern for Riku like he normally does in past seasons. He, the professional among professionals, damaged an idol’s face. He’s definitely not thinking straight and probably acting on the spur of the moment, unless he really collected himself half a second later.
Compared to how Tenn normally is, there is something almost raw and unrestrained with the way he said that line to Riku. It was kind of like he was drawing from a distant memory or imagining something worse was about to play out during the earlier confrontation.
I don’t think has to be from a single specific incident from the past per say (though it could be). It could be several situations growing up where there were close calls with Riku’s health, and then he overheard their parents’ conversations afterwards. If those sorts of memories had been accumulating for Tenn for many years (especially at his age), it may be possible it became a deep-seeded fear for him that he hasn’t gotten completely over. So when he saw Riku having an attack (which is the first time he’s seen in person in a long time since childhood) in what looked to be dire, helpless circumstances, those old memories and fears may have been brought up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ultimately, I don’t really know what was the exact conditions regarding Tenn’s deal with Kujo, if providing relief to his parents was part of it, or how Tenn really felt about his situation (other than that one vague comment in Second Beat). But to see all what you build up and sacrificed for to protect only for it to come crashing down in this one life-or-death situation, for something Tenn may view himself responsible for (getting kidnapped and not being able to escape), its not unlikely that those old memories about Riku and his parents were on his mind, even subconsciously. Him thinking of those memories and fears being about to play out maybe be why Tenn says that more oddly situation-specific line to Riku.
But this is mostly speculation with not much concrete evidence to actually support it. It is probably will be leaning much more to the first reason rather than the second reason since there is something in the story to tie it back to, but I still want to explore reason 2 nonetheless. Regardless, I found this scene peculiar, if not interesting. Hopefully Tenn’s past will be explored more in detail at some point.

Todays rip: 13/01/2024
RNR (Rip No Riffs)
Season 1 No Album Release (Read More) DND (Do Not Destroy) - No More Heroes
Ripped by Triple-Q
youtube
Alright, uh, WHEW - I hope everyone's had a great day in a post-Christmas Comeback Crisis Episode 11 world!! I've been absolutely giddy with excitement and joy ever since I watched it and I'm so glad that the reception has been so universally positive all around. I'm trying to wind down from all of it, and figured I might as well push a rip I had down the pipeline to cover up earlier in the schedule. And hey - RNR (Rip No Riffs) is also somewhat Christmas Comeback Crisis-related! If you haven't heard the rip on its own, you've DEFINITELY heard it within that series.
For those out of the loop, RNR (Rip No Riffs) is used as the theme to the Rapper's Union HQ in the CCC, the hub of the story's chill resistance faction fighting against The Voice. Yesterday with 9来4s I wrote a fair bit about how excellent a job dante and c.o. have done in giving the series a very distinct soundscape, but the thing is - that doesn't just apply to composing new songs for the series. Plenty of rips from the channel's life have been used for music in the series without being explicitly made with that purpose, and RNR (Rip No Riffs) is probably the most widely recognized of these tracks?
I think it's an excellent choice for a lot of reasons, quality aside, because of just how well it slots into the series' tone and feel. The original DND (Do Not Destroy) is the laid-back lounge theme of the original No More Heroes, playing whenever Travis Touchdown is at home rather than slaughtering people en masse outside - it's a chill calm before the storm, so to speak. At a first inattentive listen, you may not even notice that RNR (Rip No Riffs) is edited at all, as its edits aren't exactly explicitly out of tune or in contrast to the original tune. As the track's chill vibe plays out, elements from All-Star are inserted into the backing, eventually being replaced with the guitar from Linkin Park's In The End - a song typically associated with pent-up anger, frustration, rage, hatred, the works. Yet the rip builds it all up so subtly, it never interrupts the chill lounge beat that laid the foundation for the original track, and so this change in emotion never truly registers as sounding out of place or wrong.
And to me, that's what makes it such a perfect fit for the Rappers' Union's theme - it's a home where these people relax, where they talk to one another and lounge, yet its also the place where all their bubbling rage against the oppression they face is being stored - the last remaining home to all of these damaged souls. The Christmas Comeback Crisis, for as silly as its premise is, and for as many lighthearted moments that it does have, is still fundamentally a story about strife and conflict, about a bubbling state of disarray that's slowly exploding into full-on warfare. RNR (Rip No Riffs) feels like the perfect theme to embody all of those emotions, a breezy jam playing in the background to a downtrot apartment space that slowly bubbles to become something far more serious, with far more grit and rage.
I certainly don't believe this sort of vibe was what Triple-Q had in mind with the original upload - at the end of the day, it's just a silly, classic Season 1 rip, changing just enough in a familiar song to sound different while still sounding recognizably like the original. Yet I find it so fascinating that the rip still stands on its own two feet, whilst adding some genuine gravitas and mood to the series it was eventually grafted on to - althewhile being such a relatively-obscure pick for a rip to use, that it didn't feel played out whatsoever when it showed up again.
A lot of the stuff I've covered for Season 1 on this blog has been of a sort of "higher" status, be it all-time classics like Live and Ooooooooooooooh and Pikmin Park, the emotional highs of Epic Flintstones and Stone Halation, or just generally ones tied to more well-remembered passion projects like Everyday Goodbyes (SiIvaGunner Band Cover). And in comparison, rips like RNR (Rip No Riffs) may end up feeling kind of...normal, kind of basic and simple in their edits. Yet that simplicity has never been a bad thing, and its never been anything holding rips down from striking pure gold, and there's something just so sweet about knowing that any rip, of any kind, any popularity, can eventually get this kind of association, this kind of retroactive use and meaning, that ends up drawing so many more associations and thoughts to it than were originally intended.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch: "Infiltration" & "Extraction"
Tumblr media
The Bad Batch join the clone revolution in an exciting two part story arc which marks the mid-way point for the series' final season.
In the shadows, Rex and his team of renegade clones have been working to spark the flames of rebellion against the Empire even if their efforts are often small in scale and always under threat. When one rendezvous between potential allies is attacked by a mysterious assailant, Rex and his crew gain their first hint towards locating the mysterious Mount Tantiss and their missing clone brothers. Hoping to finally find answers, Rex calls in the Bad Batch to consult on their newfound intel. However, the reunion, particularly between Crosshair and the many clones he betrayed during his time with the Empire, isn't an easy one, and that's before the Empire comes knocking.
While in many ways The Bad Batch is a character ensemble piece about one particular group of warriors finding their way in a quickly changing galaxy, its overarching narrative has always concerned the ultimate fate and future of the clones who were bred and fought for a Republic that no longer exists. The Batch themselves may serve as a microcosm of this story, but there's another equally important battle being fought in parallel to Clone Force 99's. Rex and his team of rebel clones have been an intriguing and important backdrop to this series for quite sometime and the two part mid-season story arc consisting of "Infiltration" and "Extraction" finally brings them into the forefront. In a way, I've appreciated that Jennifer Corbett and her team have held off on giving us too much of Rex and his team too early on. As important as they are to the larger Star Wars narrative and even the overarching mythology of The Bad Batch, this isn't really their show. Unlike their live action counterparts, Star Wars animation has a surprisingly good track record of allowing its series to interact with the broader franchise universe without losing track of its own narrative goals. Rex has become one of the saga's most beloved and recognizable characters and bringing him in too early on would have easily distracted from the necessary character work that had to be done for our central squad of misfits. That being said, I do appreciate that we finally get to spend some serious time with Rex and his team here. If we really are heading into the endgame of this series, the other squad of renegade clones are going to have to come to step out of the shadows a little.
Just in terms of methodology, it's interesting seeing how differently Rex's team functions in comparison to the Batch. While the Batch are known for big action and improvised missions, Rex and his team are much more methodical and deliberate. They aren't participating in smash and grab missions, but long term planning. The Batch are a reactive team while Rex is planning revolution.
It's gratifying to see how Rex's story is incorporating the many disparate plot threads left dangling from the show's first two seasons. Just getting Riyo Chuchi and former Separatist leader Avi Singh together in one room feels significant, but it's even more exciting to see Rex working alongside a smattering of clone survivors from earlier in this series and The Clone Wars. Howzer in particular is a standout here. His defiance of the Empire's actions on Ryloth back in season one was one of the show's most memorable moments from its early days and his stirring resolve and innate sense of justice continue here. Episodic writers Corbett, Brad Rau, and Matt Michnovetz also thankfully don't gloss the justified anger and betrayal that Howzer has to feel towards Crosshair and it ends up becoming the emotional heart of both episodes. While it may seem like faint praise, too rarely it feels like Star Wars feels more interested in establishing continuity of plot rather than ongoing emotional character arcs and one of the best aspects of this final season of The Bad Batch has been its commitment to acknowledging the emotional reality of even its recurring guest characters.
Crosshair continues to be a standout here and it's safe to say that, barring any majorly misguided plot twists, he isn't going to lose his position as the show's most interesting character anytime soon. The tension and eventual reconciliation under fire between him and Howzer makes for some of the most emotionally dramatic stuff of both episodes, but I also love the smaller character beats with Omega as well. Seeing her intentionally mimic Crosshair's tooth pick chewing mannerisms is such a smart and delightful touch and Crosshair checking in on Omega's combat readiness in the heat of battle adds to how we understand their sibling dynamic.
"Infiltration" & "Extraction" also finally start to give us some answers on those creepy assassins we first glimpsed last year. Crosshair floats that they are clones who are true believers in the Empire's cause and as a result have been trained and reconditioned to serve as ghostly tools for Hemlock's missions. This answer is serviceable, but it also feels a bit too simple. There has to be more bubbling beneath the surface here. Both episodes seem to be screaming at us that CX-2 in particular is someone of significance. It's rare for any show to put this amount of emphasis on a mysterious new villain and not have some sort of reveal or twist waiting for us down the line. I'm not sure how I feel about this. There's already quite enough happening in The Bad Batch's final season without having to deal with some former clone we're familiar with getting Winter Soldiered. Just please, don't let it be Tech. His sacrifice is meaningful on its own and would only be cheapened by having him turn into a brainwashed super-assassin.
Speaking of returning familiar clones, Wolffe arrives at the close of "Infiltration" to lead the Imperial strike team poised to shutdown Rex's operation. While I know Wolffe has his fans, I've never been particularly attached to him. Outside of his name and costume design, Wolffe has never really stood out much as a character. Sure it works to have a familiar clone balk at having to fight against insurgents who are also his former brothers in arms, Wolffe's role really could've been filled by any number of clones and one of the oddest missteps that this two parter makes is assuming that his entrance at the end of "Infiltration" is some sort of shocking twist.
That being said, the assault on Rex's base in the Teth monastery, which is a very fun call back to the earliest days of Star Wars animation, is a tense and suspenseful set piece that continues to push our ever shrinking team of survivors into a corner. The Clone Wars excelled at making the loss of clone soldiers feel like a genuine tragedy, but every fallen member of Rex's team is devastating. There are so few clones left and to have so many of these last few men gunned down in an attempt to save their brothers carries a real emotional weight.
Also, complete non-sequitur, but did we really have to name a clone Nemec when we already have a Nemik in Andor? I can't have been the only one that double-taked at that name drop. I was so prepared for one of the clones to inexplicably be a little anti-fascist boy in a floppy hat.
At the conclusion of both episodes both teams are forced to return to square one. Their resources are shattered and Rex is reminded yet again that he is fighting a devastating uphill battle against a seemingly unstoppable foe. The future isn't looking any brighter, but thankfully The Bad Batch is still firing on all cylinders.

Hiya! Since Christmas is coming up, I have a bit of a special holiday ask for your OC's if you don't mind UvU. Let's say they come to visit their darling unannounced while they were in the middle of preparing a gift for them. How would they react to their darling getting flustered and lovingly telling them "you can't be here right now! I'm getting your gift ready and I don't wanna spoil it! Shoo!"
This is so cute Anon I cannot-
Like I cannot with how cute this is I'm definitely writing this for you <3 that earlier sentence sounded so misleading omg-
Also leaving the gifts up for yall to decide but I can put my imput in at another time if y'all want <3
Sorry it's a bit late!! I'm still on my trip so I put the time I had into finishing this as soon as I could. Didn't get the chance to look over this a second time so I'm super sorry for any errors!!
I'll do it in order of Rowan, Takeo, Daisuke, Makoto, Irene, Mila, and Dante!
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Rowan is the type to get a lil suspicious so his curiosity as just as bad- the moment he opened the door and you scrambled to cover whatever it was made him think the worse.
"Rowan, please! Get out I'm wrapping something for Christmas!" You yelled, your voice shaking as you covered the present with your body. You would he so upset if he saw the gift you got for him.
Rowan realized and turned his back, not facing you after he realized he saw a bit of the cute wrapping paper you picked out was unrolled on the floor.
He felt a little silly for thinking you were hiding something so all you could see was a tint of red reach his tanned ears and know that he felt bad.
After covering up the present quickly with a spare blanket you stood up and kissed his shoulder. "Be good okay? I only have a couple more things to wrap and then we can watch a movie okay? After that, I need to wrap some things I got for your family too." You claimed, softly reaching to kiss his cheek over his shoulder.
He pouted a bit but nodded and left, but after you put his present under the tree he definitely started inspecting it and trying to grasp its weight and size to determine what it was.
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Takeo is a big snooper. Especially around Christmas. He always wants to know what people are getting for him, even his brothers have to hide it well if he comes over to visit.
It's a nightmare that you really don't envision when it comes to him. So when you're in your place and he drops by for a surprise visit you hastily cover the present as he opens the door into the living room before getting up, "Close your eyes!! Go to my room I'm wrapping presents in here Takeo!". You warn, bringing a hand to his eyes before you get one on his arm and try to bring him to your room.
He resists like a cat I swear-
He plants his feet and tries to dodge your hand before he decides to use his own to get your hand off his eyes. "Oh come on! Just one peek! Pretty please baby?" He begs, trying to peek through your hands that hold onto him like a death grip.
But somehow you manage to lead him to the door of your room and get him in before letting go. "If you take even a peek while I wrap presents I'm not giving it to you." You threaten, your lips turned into a serious frown before leaving a small peck on his lips.
"Now be a good boy for me and then we can do whatever you want." You said, shutting the door to go back to present wrapping.
Takeo doesn't even move, blushing like a fool as he cups his face in his hands. "Ahh if you tell me like that I guess I can't go against your wishes huh?"
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Daisuke is quite calm around the holiday season and usually holds a couple of specials at the bar. So he finds you huddled in the corner of the living room with what looks like wrapping paper when he comes up and taps on your shoulder.
The moment you see him you nearly scream as you hastily cover the gift with wrapping paper before using your hands to cover his whole face. "Daisuke what the hell!?" You exclaim, pouting as he smiles against your hands.
"What do you mean Darling? Are you doing something behind my back?" He asked softly, giving your hand a kiss back as he tried to peek through your fingers and put his hands over yours.
"I'm wrapping presents! You gotta go or at least keep your eyes covered if you wanna stay! It's gotta be a surprise or else it's not as fun." You warn, pushing him toward your shared bedroom.
Daisuke could only chuckle, smiling happily as he used his own hands to cover his eyes and leave a kiss on your cheek, "Fine darling, just come cuddle with me soon."
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Makoto decorates a lot around Christmas. He loves all sorts of holidays and loves decorating his house when it comes to the different seasons. He eventually drags you in on it and of course you two decorate the tree together!
But when he comes home a bit earlier than you thought and hear the heavy door close you panic and rush towards the doorway to get to him before he enters the living room.
He has the biggest smile on his face before you crash into him and hug him to keep him in place, "Go to the bedroom! I'm wrapping some things so you can't come into the living room!" You warn, a panicked expression on your face when you realize the biggest teasing smirk on his face.
"Hmmm, but maybe I'm a little curious? After all you'd managed to hide them quite well from me and it's so close to Christmas hm?" He says, teasingly attempting to look into the living room before he eventually leaves a kiss on your forehead.
"But don't worry bunny I won't look. Let me know when you're done so I can give you the pastries I picked up before I got home." He teases before giving you a soft smile.
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Irene comes from a different world from yours, so when you bring up the notion of Christmas surprisingly they as well have a tradition of giving gifts to those they love as a way to show appreciation at the end of the year.
So of course it took you a while to figure out what to get for someone who literally has an entire empire. But after having the gift you spend time in your room to wrap it nicely after asking what kind of wrapping materials they have in the empire.
Unfortunately Irene had the idea of visiting and observing you to see what she should get you but the moment she came in she found you panicking and covering something with a large amount of wrapping paper.
"Irene! Give me a moment! Please just one moment!" You squealed out, struggling to try and gather the gifts you were wrapping before eventually shoving them under your bed.
Irene saw the struggle and the wrapping paper and the ribbon and made an assumption that you were wrapping something for her.
"Is my precious wrapping gifts hm?" she teases, leaning her hip and shoulder against the doorway before smiling. "Don't worry princess I won't peek. I'll let you finish and come back in thirty minutes." She claims, flashing you a little wave before leaving the room.
She couldn't wait for the gifts she would get so decided to go get you an extra one since you showed her a cute panicked sight.
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Mila also loves Christmas. Her favorite holiday after Halloween and the one where she tries to go all out. And oh boy she puts all sorts of presents under the tree. Some for herself, some for you, and some for the two of you to enjoy together, or that's what she keeps telling you.
Even makes sure you both write letters to Santa. She likes to look at the positives and can be very childlike when it comes to you. So of course when she accidentally comes in on you wrapping presents for the tree she feels really bad.
Your scramble to cover the presents before turning to face her. And she can't help but frown and close her eyes, "I'm sorry!! I didn't even know you were doing something doll!" She spoke, feeling really bad till you walked over and gave her a small kiss.
"Don't worry you didn't see anything right? So there's nothing to worry about you'll still be surprised just the same!" You assure, smiling as you shoo her out of the room with a small smile.
⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚. ੈ ⋆。˚.
Dante honestly hasn't really celebrated Christmas except for a few business parties he had to attend. Other than that he usually spent the holiday quietly.
But when he meets you he wanted to celebrate and asked you all the traditions you did. He and you bought a tree on Amazon and he helped set the tree up with a box of ornaments you brought over that you've kept over the years and add to as you please.
And of course he wrapped the presents, very poorly and crinkled but you just laughed a bit and reassured him that they were just fine.
So here you are, wrapping presents to put with his wrapped ones under the tree. Only one present left to wrap and a silent Dante walking into the room without you noticing.
He quietly joins you on the floor and hugs you from behind only for you to drop the tape dispenser and panick. "Wha!? Who-?!" You start, barely turning you head before he gives you a kiss on your cheek, "What are you doing baby?" He asks, lightly closing his eyes as he settles his head into the crook of your neck.
"Dante I'm wrapping presents!! You gotta get out for a bit!" You say, more of a whisper scream than anything. He only smiles before giving you a small squeeze.
"I won't look. So don't worry and keep wrapping. I just want to hold onto you." He mumbles. You know he won't let go unless he wants to so you just let him be, glad that he keeps his word about not peeking.

It had been quite difficult to determine exactly how many days and nights had already passed by. Instead of being cooperative, instead of allowing her to give some sort of treasury or information that would lead them to great treasure in exchange for her freedom, the crew had decided that (Y/N) was much more valuable to them than any sort of treasure that she could offer them. Therefore here she currently was, and had been, being held captive within a rickety, shabby bathtub that was located in the corner of the crew’s quarters. From the faint light that seeped through some cracks within the ship’s body and into the quarters (Y/N) was somewhat able to tell how many days had passed, but even then she was struggling to keep count. It had been that way for an uncertain amount of time before she had managed to form communication with one of the crew’s first mates, the first member of the crew who didn’t look at her with disgust or just the obvious thought of becoming a quick cash grab to split between them all.
“Torrin, that’s what you may address me as,” he had spoken, all while being hesitant, whether it was from caution of someone coming in and getting the wrong idea or possibly the curiosity of the species (Y/N) just so happened to be, seeing that they happened to be a more uncommon alien creature residing in the ocean. One of the many species that kept to themselves in the depths of the deep ocean. “You’ve been here for quite some time, and it’s difficult to tell how longer they will keep you here, but don’t worry. I’ll make sure that you get home.” Torrin reassures her, making small conversation within the darkness of the nights when the rest of the crew are sleeping. Small talk eventually turns into gentle touches, gentle kisses followed with whispered “I love yous”, taking strolls along the deck which turns into slow dancing underneath the moonlight. Yet, tonight wasn’t looking to be one of those nights. Not with the way that Torrin was pacing throughout the crew’s quarters as his eyebrows are furrowed in deep thought, hand resting upon his chin. There are some moments of silence all while (Y/N) attempts to figure out exactly what had happened earlier throughout that look upon Torrin’ face, considering the amount of commotion that had been going on upon the deck, but (Y/N) hadn’t been able to see what had exactly happened.
“There’s something that we need to discuss, darling,” Torrin begins, finally coming out of his thoughts as he makes way to the tub, kneeling down to be at level with (Y/N), hand moving to caress her face. “What exactly do you mean, Torrin? Is there something wrong? Amongst the crew? With the ship?” (Y/N) questions, unsure of exactly what the situation was, but figured it must’ve been serious seeing that Torrin needed to discuss it with her. Torrin begins to explain the situation, describing the turmoil and chaos of the Thanapod that had  made its way aboard upon the ship and had demanded transportation to a nearby, civilized island known as Phaiden Island. He describes how the creature makes its hunger known and that Torrin had to sacrifice some of the crew already to momentarily satisfy the beast, which not only frightened but had also angered the crew as well. “They were angered that you weren’t used to satisfying the creature’s hunger, seeing that you had stated you had been trying to escape it within the first place. They want to try and use you next, but I promise, I won’t let that happen.” It was quite  lovely, seeing the way that he had vowed (Y/N)’s life and safety over his own, one that was responded to with a deepened kiss. “Don’t worry, my love. I had the capabilities of keeping us within safety measures as well.”

“They’re advancing,” Informing Torrin about the rebelling crew’s advancements towards the captain’s quarters, Torrin hiding stealthily within the darkness of the room, (Y/N) herself hiding within the darkness behind the doors leading out to the deck, hunched over in preparations to attack. There were a handful of the remaining crew members that were armed with some sort of weapon, having reached the doors now, assuming that Torrin was sound asleep in the bed across the room. There was not time to inform Torrin that they were at the door, but she initially didn’t have to  as they made way into the quarters and over towards the bed, proceeding to attack it so viciously, (Y/N) quietly snickering at how those sneers of victory had quickly taken over their face but had been so quickly to fall at the realization that Torrin wasn’t in the bed at all. That they had no clue as to where he was currently at. This was her chance to create a distraction before they were able to discover his hiding location, emitting a low growl and barring her serrated, ragged teeth to them. Lunging towards the closest individual, making sure to cause much damage by tearing away at the skin with her teeth and claws, groaning slightly at the sudden, intense metallic taste within her mouth. It doesn’t take much for both Torrin and (Y/N) to eliminate the remaining individuals in the moments of shock, both being covered in their blood within the ending of it.
There’s some moments of silence that bestow upon the remaining two as they stand there to catch their breath, catching and maintaining eye contact with one another. Unintentionally the two individuals take steps to enclose the space between them before entangling limbs around each other all wrapped around each other as they engage in a passionate kiss, softly whispering each other’s names as if the reality of possibly losing each other has finally settled within their minds. Torrin didn’t mind the difference of physical aspect between himself and (Y/N), how despite that her physique was slightly human, but the features and detailing of her were more of an exotic, marine life creature. Being romantic with each other, being in a committed relationship with each other was something that they both knew would be something difficult due to the opinions of others, the differences in their anatomy, but that wouldn’t stop them. Not especially if they were to survive and be able to thrive after not only dealing with the Thanapod that was still moaning about being hungry underneath them. “You remember the plan, yes?” Whispering, Torrin proceeds to rub his thumb across (Y/N)’s cheeks, watching as she nodded. “You’ll deal with the Thanapod, I’ll work out the escape plan.” (Y/N) repeated the process that had been discussed many times, nodding before stepping away from him. “Torrin, you better make it out alive.” She merely stated, sincerely smiling before moving out of the room to her position.

It would be something admirable to be able to simply watch the scene unfold from afar, watching as the bright, scorching flames engulfed and slowly ate away at the wood of the ship, pieces breaking off and floating away with the waves of the ocean. Yet, unfortunately, that was not the way that it currently was. Listening to the bellow screeching of  anger of betrayal and pain of being engulfed by the flames that came from the Thanapod echoed throughout the air, a little tip that (Y/N) was able to give Torrin based on a past experience of watching some ship crew take down a Thanapod with fire. Anxiously waiting there with the escape boat, eyes frantically searching for him amongst the flames and the flying debris, (Y/N) yelling out Torrin’s name in the midst of the explosion that took place on the boat. For a moment, there had been nothing. No sign of Torrin, no sign of the Thanapod, no sign of life whatsoever. Here (Y/N) had believed that she was once again all alone in this strange, alientic life. That was till she had caught sight of Torrin rising up to the water surface, coughing and spitting up water.
It doesn’t take long to get him within the boat, making sure that he’s okay from having come face to face with the Thanapod himself, which she would admit that she had felt something similar to guilt. “Are you going to be heading to Phaiden Island now?” (Y/N) questions after some minutes of rowing away from the ship, taking in the sight of how the light from the flickering flames made Torrin’s skin seemingly glow. “That is the plan, yes.” A moment of silence, a mere moment of a slight aching feeling within her chest. “I’m not able to go with you that far, you know that Torrin. The people.. Won’t accept someone such as I, especially being with someone such like you.” There’s the painstaking moment of silence as (Y/N) tries to read whatever thoughts were on Torrin’s mind but becomes confused by the smile that appears upon his face. “Don’t worry, darling. There was no chance that I had planned on staying there permanently, not when I have you now.” A soft laugh, standing up before glancing down into the water below them. “So, then your plan is for us to set sail upon the sea after gaining another boat? Hopefully without another Thanapod trying to put us in shambles once more?” It’s that moment that the smile on his face grows, acknowledging her words with a nod. “I’ll be waiting for you then, Torrin.” As she proceeds to jump off the boat and into the water, swimming down into the depths to find a temporary home, at least until he comes to retrieve her, Torrin responds, “And I, you, (Y/N).”

Magical Emergencies of the Big Moon Variety
Summary: Not everyone adjusts well to being unceremoniously ejected from a collective simulation. Even if it only lasted for approximately 6 months ship time, it certainly felt a lot longer. Some of the adjustments that need to be made are minor in nature. Others… are a bit more serious and require outside assistance which youd think would be hard to come by in space. Look familiar? Unedited Pt 1, Unedited Pt 2,
Read the edited version on AO3
Tango spread his fingers against the glass his hand flexing absently as he greedily drank in the sights of his friends and family. He couldn’t tell if the relief that he was feeling was from the simple joy that his family were all in fact alive and in, uh, various states of wellness or from the more selfish realization that he hadn’t failed in his quest to blow up the moon.  The simulation had ended quite abruptly, moments before moon-fall.  If Tango had to guess, the resulting cataclysm had catapulted them back into their bodies and awareness of the real world without so much as a by your leave. From his vantage point it was very obvious that some of them had not handled the transition well at all.
His eyes drifted down the line of Hermits as they all waited, with varying levels of patience, for the Pods to finish draining and equalize to the internal atmosphere of the Hermitheius. Bdubs was pressed up against the glass, as close as he could get to the center of the room and by default the rest of the hermits, eyes wider than normal. Their gazes met and Bdubs’ grin nearly split his face in two, eyes watering. Tango flashed him a quick smirk and a thumbs up. His focus wandered again, this time seeking out the third member of their trio. Keralis was sitting peacefully on the floor of his own pod making faces at XB, but he offered a wave of his own when Tango managed to catch his eye. Basemates accounted for, Tango turned his attention to the rest of his friends. From where he was already looking, it was easiest to find Zedaph, skipping over and noting a few empty pods in the process. He’d been a bit concerned for Zed, isolated as he had been for the entirety of the simulation but there was no way to tell what was going through his buddy’s head normally let alone right now. In fact, Zed was still sitting back to the room and staring out the window closest to his pod into the void of space, just as he had been since Tango had awakened.
A fine mist of condensation floated across the room before dissipating. Tango traced it to its source finding what looked like a joyous cacophony of noise as Bdubs’ upon release from his pod had launched himself into the arms of a mildly surprised Etho. Tango was unsure exactly why as he had spotted the other man hovering near Bdubs pod for as long as he had been aware.  Etho hadn't been the only one present either, even if he was the only one currently lingering. Iskall, Stress, Wels and TFC had left the simulation early and Tango had seen all of them as they wandered through, checking in on everyone before wandering off again. Wels had even stopped to chat when Tango had waived him down while waiting for his pod to finish draining.
It was hard to communicate through glass without communicators but luckily his pantomimes and pidgin sign language had been fairly easy to understand. At least Wels had gotten the gist of what Tango wanted to know, and had been fairly obliging in his explanations. The five hermits who had ended up leaving the simulation early had simply opted to remain out of the simulation rather than constantly hopping back in and out again during the long trip to Season 8. He’d also managed to convey that he and Stress had had been working on a project with Iskall. It was when Renbob had wandered through that Wels had left to chase the hippie back to his bed. Tango wasn’t put off by the abrupt ending to their acted out conversation. Earlier Wels had indicated that both Renbob and the Goatfather had worked themselves to exhaustion trying to make sure that Boatem had made it out safely as they had been last group to get booted. It had been a much more complicated and trying process than anyone had been prepared for and none of them were sure exactly where the problem had originated. Something, something, resetting respawns, sleep deprivation and maybe the void but there wasn't much of a chance for any elaboration before Wels darted off to play nurse in shining armor.
Even with the heads up, Tango would have probably been the most concerned about the members of Boatem. Pearl had swum to the top of her half-drained pod and was floating on her back, legs pressed up against the glass and watching the room upside down seemingly giggling at random. Scar seemed entirely unperturbed and unphased as he waited for his pod to drain, not that he was paying any attention to the rest of the group. Instead, he was sitting cattywampus on the floor of his pod, legs stretched out in front of him, cooing at Jelly who was batting ineffectually at his fingers through the glass. Mumbo on the other hand was standing straight up in the dead center of his pod, nervously running his hands through his hair and avoiding all eye contact despite the fact that he couldn’t seem to stop glancing around at all the people in the room with the exception of Grian. Speaking of Grian, he was also standing in the center of his pod, blank and expressionless, seemingly staring through everything but still watching it all. It was rather eerie and reminded Tango uncomfortably of how Grian had been when he had first joined their merry band of misfits. Still, that was a problem for another time and quite possibly another bunch of hermits. Tango was going to have his hands full as it was, trying to help Zed who was still staring out the window; and that didn’t even account for Impulse.
Out of everyone, it was Impulse who was concerning Tango the most not that he could put his finger on what exactly was sending up the alarm bells. He didn’t look worse off than anyone else in Boatem sitting as he was on the far side of his pod. His buddy was slouched slightly with his back against the glass and one arm loosely resting on a bent knee. From where he was across the room, it was impossible to make out any sort of expression on Impulse’s face but from how it rested against the glass, turned upwards and eyes closed it was probably safe to assume that there wasn’t one.
Tango frowned slightly, as he made eye contact with Jevin and gestured over at Impulse. Jevin thankfully, got the picture and after a moment put his hands together on one side of his tilted head in a pantomime of sleep. Tango let out a sigh of relief but his worry did not abate and he continued to stare. While he wanted his buddy to get some much-needed rest, really Mumbo how was sleep deprivation supposed to help prevent Moon Big at all, Devs sometimes Boatem made him despair, something was still wrong. Something just… felt off. He could feel it in his bones, as Impulse would say. Still, he couldn’t put his finger on what exactly it was.
Another puff of condensation due to the release of pressurized air floated through the room. Another Hermit’s pod had finished equalizing. Probably Cub? Tango glanced over, and yep, that was definitely Cub, sharp teeth, tattered wings and overly blue eyes and all, moving as if he was expecting there to be simultaneously more and less gravity than there actually was. That was certainly interesting. Hadn’t Cub also attempted to escape Moon-fall by going to space? Thoughts wandering, Tango jumped when his gaze returned to Impulse only to find one cracked eye blearily peering at him.
Tango couldn’t help himself as he threw his arms up and cheered, “IMPULSE! Hey! There you are!”
There was no response, not that Tango had expected one. He knew Impulse wouldn’t be able to hear him but still a wave or something would have been nice. His arms fell as Impulse continued to stare, not at him but through him, before the heavily lidded eyelid slid shut.
“Impy?” Tango said, mainly for his own benifit.
Both eyes opened this time. Had he not been so worried, Tango would have lost it laughing. Trust Impulse’s hatred of that nickname to cause a reaction even when the other couldn’t hear it. Tango didn’t relish the hilarity of that for very long however, as Impulse’s head dropped ever so slightly, the lights of the room hitting at exactly the right angle for him to catch an unobstructed view of eyeshine from not normally yellow glassy eyes.
Oh.
That.
That was bad.
That was so very very bad.
“Impy?” he tried again mentally cursing the slowness of the tube’s equalization cycle, as he caught his buddy's gaze.
One eye closed, followed by the other before opening again, one after the other in a strange facsimile of a blink. That was weird, even by his standards and the feeling that something was wrong only grew. But Hey! He definitely, somehow, had Impulse’s attention. Because that? That was a response. It had to be. Tango watched as Impulse blinked, once more, this time a lot closer together and looking a lot more like normal. Progress!
“C’mon Impy!” Tango crooned. He’d take Impulse being annoyed with him if he could actually get a coherent response. “Up an attem buddy! You can do it!”
Impulse could not in fact do it, and Tango watched in horror as Impulse’s eyes closed and he listed sideways, sliding down the glass and smashing his face on the floor of his pod.

Ted Lasso episode 3.09 "La Locker Room Aux Folles"
Tumblr media
Still from "La Locker Room Aux Folles". Image courtesy of AppleTV+.
I was trying to wait for the series to end before I covered Ted, but this episode really stood out to me. There was so much in it that I found perfect and meticulously executed, and those parts are all the more impressive to me given the problems I have with its central premise.
There are multiple ways to read this episode, and ways that I can make it make sense for myself, but I still just have to say: what the fuck, Isaac? I give the episode some credit because literally everyone immediately said the same thing, and if this is what they were going to do with the episode they handled it as best they could, but something about it just didn’t quite sit right with me.
The episode picks up where the last one left off, with Isaac icing Colin out after grabbing his phone and seeing some gay stuff on there. Just like Trent earlier this season, I never came close to suspecting the worst in Isaac, so I don’t really appreciate this show continuing to play the “is he a homophobe” game with Colin and me. And without really entertaining the question they want me to be asking, it’s just a little weird. What’s his deal?
It all comes to a head at halftime when Isaac’s inexplicable pent up anger leaves Richmond down 0-1 at the half. As they shuffle into the locker room, a belligerent fan shouts down that the team is playing like f**s, and that’s the straw that breaks the mysterious camel’s back. Colin and Sam both hear it too and avoid engaging, but Isaac leaps into the stands and starts pummeling the guy, with Roy of all people being the one to break it up.
Again, the thing that makes a character’s bizarre behavior work is when the show acknowledges that it is indeed bizarre. Isaac is rightfully red carded and Richmond is down a player for the rest of the game, and the dude comes in shaking. Everyone just looks at him, and finally Ted breaks the silence with “okay, no one’s gonna say anything? I’ll say somethin’. What just happened?” This just sends Isaac hurling his captain band across the room and storming off into a closet with an aggressive shout of “what if one of us was gay?!” But when Ted tries to go after him, Roy says he’s got it.

While Roy ambiguously talks him down, with little Will’s help, we’re not given much more insight into what’s really bothering him. Roy’s utter respect for people and willingness to mind his own business is a really great perspective to add to this episode’s conversation, and I really appreciate him here. Later, at the post-game press conference, I’ll appreciate him even more.
While he tells Isaac to handle whatever he’s “really mad about”, the rest of the team speculates on what in the world has gotten into him. Colin stays quiet, but Sam mentions that he heard what the fan said that got that reaction. The pacing in this locker room sequence is perfect. The comedic beats keep this from getting more serious than it needs to be (coming out is a big deal, but this isn’t a melodrama, nor does it need to be when it’s all love, as we know it will be). So Sam tells the team that the fan said the F-word, which is met with choruses of:
“Fuck?”
“No, the other F-word”
“ohh fuck…”
The team reaches the inevitable conclusion that Isaac must be gay. Finally, Colin admits that Isaac isn’t gay. He is. We don’t actually see him come out, though, which is an interesting choice that I actually think is really classy. I know Colin isn’t a real guy, but a big theme in this episode is giving people their privacy, and I like that the episode itself found a way to let him have this moment with the team in private without us feeling like we’re missing any plot points.
There’s a really nice moment after this that we do get to see, that adds to the impressive, thoughtful storytelling here. The team of course is quick to douse Colin in love, with Jamie saying, “you got us, we got you”, among some other choruses of “yeah bruv, we don’t care”. But something about that last part doesn’t sit right with Ted. He tells a little story about a friend of his who was a Denver Broncos’ fan in a place where that was not a popular team. He didn’t write off his friend the way everyone else in his town did, because he ‘didn’t care’, but he found out later that his friend spent two consecutive super bowls alone because Ted ‘didn’t care’, which also meant that he didn’t think that friend might need some special attention.

During this really sweet monologue, Sam and Jamie have a silent conversation over who should wear Isaac’s captain band for the rest of the game. Sam caught it when Isaac flung it off, and Jamie is gesturing for Sam to give it to him. Sam instead flips him off and puts it on. It breaks up the moment without detracting from it, and it was perfectly on brand for the two of them.
When Ted’s story ends, Colin asks if he just compared being gay to being a Denver Broncos’ fan, and Jamie asks what the fuck a Denver Bronco is. Ted’s anecdote here is such a great choice for this episode in a few ways. First, as a viewer, I found that to be a powerful comparison, and the point Ted is trying to make is well taken. But that story is for us, the viewers, not the team. It reached us, but not his intended audience right in front of him, and his tripping over himself within the story continues to serve the scene. It’s another comedic break, and I appreciate the show’s acknowledgement that straight people don’t always nail it when people come out, despite their best intentions. But Ted sums it up for everyone: “the point is, Colin, we don’t ‘not care’. We care very much. We care about who you are and what you must’ve been going through”.
So ultimately, Ted did nail it. Colin flies back onto the field, weightless, telling Trent jokingly that the only way it could’ve gone better is if the entire team came out too. This was all so sweet, but there was nothing like Colin’s guttural, euphoric “YEESS!!!” on the field after carrying the team to victory. I’m tearing up a little just thinking about it.

That night, Isaac knocks on Colin’s door, wanting to know what about him made Colin feel like he needed to keep his sexuality a secret from him. To be honest, I’m getting a little tired of this being normalized as an ‘acceptable’ reason to react badly to people coming out. Isaac apologized, and Colin made the good point that he kept the secret his whole life and only lasted a month after Isaac knew. But the show had the option to have not made this a plot point at all. Everything else in this episode was so perfect, that I feel like I can tell that Isaac’s reaction was an unfortunately necessary vehicle to bring the story to this point.
Nonetheless, the two make up and play video games together and it’s all very nice, so I’m willing to let it go, especially with the rest of the episode’s events and themes in mind. I couldn’t help but think throughout this episode that Keeley’s coming out was not at all this belabored and serious, which I thought was normal and great. But now Jack is moving to Argentina for several months because Keeley was hacked and had her nudes leaked…? That revelation was a footnote of this episode at best, but combined with Isaac’s behavior, perhaps the takeaway to all this is just that sometimes people don’t always do the right thing.
I guess we’ll find out what to make of Jack later, but the culmination of everything this episode is trying to say has me leaving my heart open for her to redeem herself. Roy tells a great anecdote of his own at a press conference after the game that really sums up this takeaway- Rebecca had asked him to attend a press conference in Ted’s place earlier in the episode and he had sent Beard instead. Rebecca then laid into Roy, telling him to stop “ordering shit sandwiches and complaining about the portions”. This was a perfectly timed criticism because, especially with Brett Goldstein’s recent appearances on Sesame Street, Roy was starting to become a bit of a caricature of himself. It was very appropriate and self-aware of the show to show him being challenged and in the vulnerable position of having a boss.
So, Roy heeded her advice (or orders, depending on how you look at it) and went to the post-match press conference, despite Ted being available to do it himself. His commanding presence was the right choice, given that the press room was frothing at the mouth to ask what the hell had gotten into Isaac. The first question Roy takes is if Richmond condones Isaac’s behavior, to which Roy grunts “what a stupid fucking question. Course we don’t. What Isaac did was awful. He was lucky he only got a red card.” The natural follow up question is “then why’d he do it?”
Instead of answering, Roy tells an uncharacteristically vulnerable story from his past. When he was a young player, he had a teammate whose wife was expecting their first baby. One day at training, Roy made a joke that statistically, he was just as likely to be the father as his teammate. Not a great joke, but it didn’t warrant the guy breaking three of his ribs. The teammate was expelled from the team, and no other team wanted him after that. Roy ran into him at a pub months later, and took the opportunity to apologize for his joke. The teammate then told him that his wife had lost the baby a month before the incident, and never told anyone. “So for Isaac to do what he did today, even though it was wrong, I give him love. And as for why he did what he did, that’s none of my fucking business. Next question.”

If Isaac’s poor behavior was just a plot device to bring out the best in both Roy and Ted- and have them convince me to forgive Isaac in the process- I’ll allow it. Ted Lasso is love, and acceptance, and respect, even in moments that we don’t relate to or understand. I could watch Sam’s hands-in chant of “I love you guys so very much!” every day.
Finally, I would be remiss not to mention Nate. I hate to see him on the dark side, but I think he’s doing something uniquely challenging by choosing goodness in a space where it’s met with so much opposition. The last few episodes have convinced me that he really is cute and charming and I want so bad for him to reach his own potential. He said himself that he owes a lot to Rupert, so taking the initiative to leave the “guy’s night” that turned out to involve Rupert setting him up with hookers took courage (a guy’s night that Rupert never tried to initiate before finding out that Nate had a girlfriend). His showing up at Jade’s door and wrapping her in a big hug made me so proud. I know Richmond will be waiting for him with open arms when he’s ready to come back, and even though we all know it’s coming, I will love seeing it happen.
How do you guys think Ted Lasso is going to wrap up its final episodes? What’s going on with the now promiscuous and mysteriously absent Doc Shannon? Is Rebecca going to have babies or what (with Sam…?)? Do you really want to eat at Ola’s or is that just me? What do you make of this being a British show built for an American audience?
