The Vampire Diaries

So, pandemic boredom has lead to me re-watching TVD (which I never actually finished but didn’t want to watch the last couple seasons w/o re-watching the whole show since I’d forgotten a LOT of what happened and when it happened).

But re-watching it, I’m realizing that some of my favorite relationships on the show (canon or non-canon) get the least exposure in the fandom. I mean, anything involving Alaric but the MOST underrated has to be Bonnie and Jeremy*. I just got to the episodes where he kissed her and now they’re having the candlelit “not a date” in their living room that he set up for her and it’s just SO CUTE. 

Plus, as a random aside, I love how this is the one relationship on the show where they make age a big deal (i.e. Bonnie’s concerns that Jeremy is Elena’s younger brother) when the age gap can’t be more than a year or two since they’re both in high school at the same time. And yet, Elena (and later many of the other characters) are out there dating or otherwise entangled* with vampires that are at least century and a half older than her. Part of the reason I mentioned liking the idea of AlaricxDamon above is that while an age-gap is obviously unavoidable, at least Alaric is a grown man rather than either a teenage girl or a woman Damon has compelled to date him (for one reason or another).

I get why the Delena, Stelena, Staroline, and Klaroline ships get the most play (and I’m on team Delena and team Klaroline all the way - who doesn’t love a good anti-hero). But it’s too bad to see some of the best ships being largely ignored...though I know that it happens in every fandom. I’m an inveterate multi-shipper - I’ll ship almost anyone with anyone as long as it’s not creepy (like incest or abusive) and I absolutely get why people ship these four pairings but I’m just saying, as I rewatch this, I’m going to have to go catch up on some TVD fan fic - anyone have any good BonniexJeremy fics to recommend? And/or does anyone even know what their nickname is? Is it Beremy?

*To call a spade a spade, I know that part of the reason that Bonnie and Jeremy’s relationship isn’t as popular is because it is that she is black and interracial relationships are almost always much less popular within the fandoms. (The fact that they’re an opposite sex couple may impact this as well since they are, generally, less popular in fandoms. My theory is that opposite sex love interests are far more likely to become canon eventually which gives fan fic writers less room to play in that ship’s sandbox, so to speak.) 

*Shout-out to Jada Pinckett Smith for gifting us with this absolutely brilliant way of saying “it’s complicated” or “we’re just f*ck buddies but I don’t want to tell you that part” or “my husband and I have an open relationship - how long is it going to take for you all to accept that; are we going to do this tango every few years like clockwork?”

Major Matrix Revolutions Character Confirmed for Resurrections

In many ways, The Matrix Resurrections feels like a remake: Thomas Anderson is trapped inside the simulation once again, waiting to be woken up in the real world. A new group of runners led by Morpheus are fighting the Agents and Machines that threaten Zion. Once again, Keanu Reeves’ Neo is faced with a choice: the red pill or the blue pill?

But as much as things stay the same, Resurrections is also a continuation of the trilogy of films that concluded with Revolutions in 2003. Not only is the new sequel bringing back characters like Niobe (Jada Pinckett Smith) and the Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) but Warner Bros. has also confirmed the return of another character from Revolutions.

The official Warner Bros. Korea Instagram handle has finally revealed that Priyanka Chopra is playing the adult version of Sati, the little girl/program who was at the center of one of the more enigmatic subplots of Revolutions. She was introduced as a bit of an anomaly herself, a program born out of the love between two other programs (her parents). Because she didn’t have a defined purpose, Sati was to be deleted but her parents made a deal with the Merovingian to save their daughter’s life. Neo first encounters Sati and her parents at the train station between the Matrix and the real world in Revolutions.

“#사티ㅣ#프리앙카초프라” read the first two hashtags in Korean, which translate to “#Sati | #Priyanka Chopra.” While it’s long been speculated that Chopra was playing Sati, this is the first time WB has confirmed the character’s return.

We’ve only seen Sati briefly in the trailers and teasers released so far. In the first full-length trailer, we see her reading a copy of Alice in Wonderland and then smiling up at Neo as he enters a coffee shop. She seems to be expecting him, with the knowing expression that we saw plenty of times on the Oracle’s face in the original trilogy, suggesting that perhaps Sati has taken over the Oracle role in the 20 years since the last adventure. That’s me speculating, though.

In our brand-new interview with Matrix Resurrections star Jessica Henwick (she plays future cyberpunk fashion icon Bugs), the actor teases one of Sati’s scenes in which she delivers a “10-page monologue of thick, very technical Matrix dialogue.” According to Henwick, Sati is talking to Neo in the scene. “Then at the end of the scene, Keanu had one line. The line was like, ‘Will it work?'”

Whether Sati is the new Oracle or not, it sounds like she’s at the very least a guide for the new generation of heroes in their never-ending fight to free humanity from the simulation. And it makes sense that she would take up such an important role. After all, the Oracle (Mary Alice) and mysterious bodyguard Seraph (Collin Chou) went to great lengths to try and protect Sati from both the Merovingian and Smith.

The Oracle even alluded to Sati’s importance in a cutscene from the tie-in video game Enter the Matrix, revealing she believed the child would “change both the Matrix and the real world.”

It’s a prophecy that isn’t exactly fulfilled in the original trilogy — some might even say the subplot seems to come out of left field and goes nowhere in Revolutions — but perhaps it was meant to be more of a promise for a future Resurrections is now set to explore. Something tells me that when Neo meets Sati again 20 years later, she’ll be able to do more than just change the simulation’s sky.

The Matrix Resurrections opens on Dec. 22 in theaters and on HBO Max.

Writing a 2016 summary post because fuck it this entire website is basically a public diary

2016 started strong, getting a job on my first ever legit motion picture, helping stage an African farm in front of the New York Stock Exchange (amongst other sets), high fiving Jodi Foster, and making some dope eye contact with George Clooney:

Hung out with some of my bestest and loveliest old friends:

And made some kickass new ones:

Had an apartment burn down, but moved into a new one in Brooklyn with the bombest roommate of all time:

Cut my hair short for the first time in forever:

Dressed up as a classy, drunk Cheshire Cat for my childhood BFF’s BDay (only included cuz I look baller in this pic):

Saw a lot of fun theater (ft. here, my beautiful, awe-inspiring little cousin, Phoebe):

Did some AWESOME summer traveling, beginning with Amsterdam with the fam -- 

And then a month in Paris, meeting incredible people and studying alongside some of the greatest writers of our time (ZADIE SMITH AND I ARE BROS NOW). Nothing beats exploring a new country with a small group of new friends, spending the days eating, drinking, writing, and exploring.

Then, for my last semester of college (AHHHHH) got the most astounding opportunity to produce a pilot I had written--thanks to a generous donation by Will and Jada Pinckett Smith--and worked alongside a group of people I believe are the future of the television industry. I was incredibly honored to serve as their scatterbrained (but dedicated) showrunner. THE TROUPE is coming to an internet near you circa May 2017!  

Repeating for terrified emphasis, I GRADUATED this December, finishing out my college career, but was fortunate enough to be hired by the Digital Video department at AMC, where I’ve been interning since February. So excited to be an Associate Producer/Assistant Editor with the dopest department of all time (here’s us after successfully Escaping the Room during our Christmas party):

Yes, so this year was shit as a whole (obviously). We elected a sentient Cheeto as our Commander in Chief, and saw the deaths of countless innocents, victims of the rampant violence that has become a heartbreaking part of the American culture. Personally, I saw my father face his own mortality as he endured weeks in the hospital battling severe pneumonia over the holidays, and had my dream apartment burn down after living there for two years. It was the first year I wasn’t in a serious relationship. On the macro and micro scales, 2016 was kind of a bitch, but I have complete faith that 2017 will be the year we pull together and fight to bring about our ideals of social change. 

This is the last picture I took in 2016. Yes, we were drunk, and yes I think it’s fitting considering the year we all had, but here it is. Here’s to a better 2017:
