Young Justice was such a wild show. Like. It's based off a 90's comic by the same name. It contains exactly 1 (one) character from the source media, who they immediately change beyond recognition. It used Dick Grayson's Robin and Wally West's Kid Flash, but made Roy Harper the old jaded one. Instead of Wondergirl, they gave Martian Manhunter a niece. They invented a brand new Aqualad. A random 90's villain gets shunted into Arrowette's role, arguably gets the most compelling emotional story of the entire show, and turns out to be related to half the villains they ever meet.
They're a secret black ops team made entirely of teenagers. At one point several of them die onscreen. The martian almost murders several people. There's kind of a pseudo incest plot. There is an episode that takes place almost entirely through mandated therapy sessions.
The show does actually bring in a second character from the original Young Justice, in an episode where Artemis almost dies only to be saved by Secret, the ghost of the villain's sister (who was a member of the original comics team). In the same episode, Superboy and Miss Martian trick a classmate into thinking there's an alien invasion using a Loony Tunes character. Neither of these events are ever mentioned again.
The timeline of the show means that Dick Grayson became Nightwing at 15. They accidentally create Beast Boy because Miss Martian has been impersonating his mom. Aqualad ends up as the leader of the Justice League.
Five years go by between seasons, resulting in a completely different show. I could make the argument that Young Justice was Weisman's OC fanfiction of the comic series. Everything after season 2 is unwatchable. This is the show that got me into fandom. I adore it.

NEW AU ALERT
STAFF-VERSE AU
Part 1/2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More information under the cut
Staff-Verse is an AU inspired by the Spider-Verse.
This AU takes place after Season 4.
Basically, as the fabric of the whole universe was starting to collapse because of Azure's lack of control over the Jade Emperor's powers, alternate versions of people from MK's universe slipped through the cracks. Similar to the concept of "everyone can wear the mask", the people that were sent to MK's universe are people that he's known, all wielding Monkey King's staff.
There's Sun (orange) from a universe similar to MK's own. He's a version of Monkey King who's Journey to the West was still on going.
Then there's Liu'Er (purple) from a universe where he bargained with heaven and went on the Journey to the West instead of Wukong in order to work for his friend's freedom.
A younger version of Tang (blue) from a universe where he found the staff fresh out of college when he received an anonymous tip about its location, accidentally freeing DBK earlier than in canon.
A Red Son (red) who befriended his version of MK and Mei early on and perfected the gauntlet used to lift the staff to free his father, forced to fight back with the staff to protect his friends when MK accidentally found himself in the middle of his father's wrath.
And finally a Mei (green) who's Ao Lie is still alive helping to mentor her and help her wield the staff after Monkey King's mysterious disappearance after sealing DBK.
MK has to help thesw alternate versions of his friends to get back home while learning one brutal lesson...
Bad things always happens to heroes.
YOU CAN ASK ME ABOUT THIS AU AND STUFF, IF YOU SEE THIS ON TIKTOK YES I'M ALSO POSTING STUFF THERE.
haha don't expect a lot of things from me cux i made this comic for funsies

By The Book AU Timeline
[this will be edited as things progress and the au gets more fleshed out]
less of a timeline and more the a brainstorm chart for the plotbeats i have so far
Prince > Little Sage > Pilgrim > Immortal
Tumblr media
ACT 1, PRINCE: 2 years, S1 plus some of S2
ep0 special, MK becomes Monkie Kid
Fated Feast (tm) and dealing with it
MK learning how to use his powers
pretty much all the episodes of S1
Beijing Opera sideplot
first New Years is a Lion Dancing competition special
Macaque introduces himself
Spider Queens get exorcised, LBD reveal
Nezha and Muzha introduction
some more filler episodes of Monkie gang dealing with small easy stuff
MK gets invited to meet Guanyin
MK learning the Dao and Dharma, starts cultivation
Macaque causes trouble (basically Shadow Play ep but not), Wukong finds out
spicynoodles start becoming a thing late in the arc
S1 finale special, except it's LBD and some henchmen
Celestial Realm sightseeing moment, introduction to several immortals and gods
ACT 2, LITTLE SAGE: about half a year, part of S2 and a lot of changes
Red Son's investigation gets serious, Nezha is helping
Wukong gets more present to teach MK
most of what's left of S2, with some changes
Yingge and Longnü intro
Tang starts helping MK and Mei with magic
Mei starts training her dragon powers in FFM
Guanyin meets the Monkien gang, reveal of Tang's past reincarnations
MK gets deeper on training with his monkey form and powers
"recollections of red and blue" is set in this arc
DBK and PIF start making amends with Red Son
qpr chimera fully established, Red Son and MK get serious enough to tell their parents about it
more LBD shenanigans
S2 season finale, except not
LBD tries to trap him in a pagoda, everyone joins the fray, MK escapes because Macaque underestimates him, Wukong gets kebabed, Megapolis is lost and the gang flees for their lives
ACT 3, PILGRIM: about half a year, S3 in spirit but almost every plot gets scrapped cus its just filler anyway
they aren't on a ""journey to the west"", they are gathering allies and tools to use against LBD and Macaque
plan is, burn the motherfuckers with the Samadhi fire with the help of the four dragon king's armies to spread the fire with rain, and use some artifacts to then control the fire and put it out
drastic measure but it do be drastic times
LBD used the skeleton key to open the gates of the Diyu, so the world is slowly getting overrun by runaway spirits, as well as channeling the waters from it to freeze the land
apparently Macaque wants to consume every living thing he's trapped to fuel something, and nobody is sure what
anyway it's crisis politics time, nobody is having fun, everything sucks
time to check in with the past pilgrims for advice and some tricks they know, Monkie gang power up time
the dragon king of the north and his family are missing, time to find them
Shen Gongbao intro, he's involved but they figure it out
it's also time to draft some immortals, we love owing favors to people in this house amiright??
Mayor starts to think the henchman career isn't for him, time to dip
he fucks a plan cus he uses a pill of immortality to heal himself but oops the gang needed that
Mayor spills the beans on Macaque's plan, MK gets impulsive and runs off to face LBD
S3 special time except not
MK exchanges himself for the girl LBD got possessed, which builds the group time to wrap up lose ends
final battle time, hoards of the underworld versus whatever immortals got convinced to help despite going against the Jade Emperor's decree
MK sends a clone with his staff before he loses control back to the gang
Mei in dragon form fighting possessed MK, so that Red Son and Nezha can take a shot at MK to exorcise LBD out of him, Erlang and Muzha helping to hold Macaque back
MK gets shot with the Samadhi Fire, to explosive results
MK vs Macaque kaiju monkey battle time
Macaque gets nuked, LBD gets carbonized, Mayor dies saving people from the city before the fires get to them
everything is put back where it belongs, but there's a lot of loose ends to wrap up, ends in a bittersweet note
ACT 4, IMMORTAL: two years, S4 solely in name, basically a full overhaul lmao
oh man oh man shits gonna hit the fan lmao
the city is saved and the bad guys are gone; time for Consequences
Jade Emperor isnt very happy with the amount of unauthorized actions taken just now
MK goes to fucking trial for the crime of saving the world, it goes as well as one would think
luckily Guanyin comes in clutch and gets his sentence lightened to "community service"
there is an absurd amount of undead still walking around, which means MK has to get on that
also yknow. the devastating amount of damage in the mortal AND celestial realm
MK is given an assignment in the heavenly bureocracy, to help keep him in check and accountable to stuff. is great innit.
another part of his job is, dealing with Wukong's past sworn brotherhood cus they've been uppity since Macaque's attack and threatening to break the human-demon truce
Qi "two dads nuclear family" Xiaotian learns to deal with distant extended family relations with very specific social cues. again, goes as well as expected
under all that, Red Son still hasn't been able to get the missing memories situation fixed
also turns out even Wukong doesn't remember who MK was but he used to know. he doesn't anymore. and he doesn't know what happened. Red Son did not like learning that.
the celebration of Ulhambana in the Celestial Realm is approaching, and Red Son thinks he can get himself and MK invited to it so they can yknow, ask Buddha wtf is going on
so yknow, time to earn the trust of the Celestial Realm again, in a year. that's doable right? ahahah
and because he doesn't have enough on his plate, MK traded off a lot of his merits in exchange for LBD and Mayor speedrunning their time in hell so they can be reborn under his care
MK becomes An Uncle, what could possibly go wrong!
oh, jumpscare, Macaque is still around but Different

spotlight on the OFC
(fanfiction recommendations) :)
the reader insert, the second person, the y/l/n convention (which, for me, can disrupt the text and i haven’t gotten used to it - not criticizing those who do it - i'm the problem, it’s me 🤪) are all the rage in fanfiction.  i get the immersive appeal, and many of the fics i love and enjoy employ the second person.
richly drawn original characters draw me in and capture my attention. I appreciate how creative folks get with their OFCs, the headcanons, and how they have fun showing off these OFC’s quirks and strengths and interior lives and histories.  it’s a joy to read.
here are a few great OFCs in the Pedro Pascal Character universe.  the stories are engaging and this is a fairly diverse list of OFCs (by that I mean race/ethnicity, life experience, nationality, disability).  as always, each author issues their own warnings.
listed in alphabetical order by writer:
@iamskyereads - Ezra (Prospect) x OFC Beatrice
ongoing series (Compulsion).  love the sci-fi world-building in the first chapter. Beatrice is a sharp and compelling protagonist who’s suffered a traumatic brain injury and has PTSD.
@intheorangebedroom - Frankie (Triple Frontier) x OFC Gabrielle
complete series (Pleased to Meet You).  angsty intercontinental love story between everyone’s favorite pilot and a cool French woman.  the descriptions of different cities are vivid.
@jazzelsaur - Frankie (Triple Frontier) x OFC Ellie
complete series (Between the Raindrops).  the slow burn here is a smolder in the best sense.  Elliot (Ellie) is a widow who lives next door to Frankie.  the weight of grief and angst in this series is remarkable.
@jomiddlemarch - Joel (The Last of Us) x OFC Grace
loose-fit series (On Call for the Apocalypse).  crossover with Ted Lasso.  set in Jackson WY between seasons 1 and 2, Grace is a snarky doctor (scratch a cynic, find a romantic) hanging out with Joel and Ellie  (format better on AO3)
@julesonrecord and @lunapascal ( @stardustandskycrystals) - Dieter (the Bubble) x OFC Andie
ongoing series (Curls).  we’re rooting for Dieter and Andie amid all the drama and shenanigans surrounding a pregnancy and a wedding.  this reads like a novel you finish in one sitting.
@ladamedusoif - Mr Ben (SNL) x OFC Lydia
ongoing series (Visiting).  Lydia is a European art historian who goes to teach at an East Coast liberal arts college and meets the dashing Mr Ben.  delightful and smart (and I'm not just describing Mr Ben).
@radiowallet - Marcus (We Can Be Heroes) x OFC Amy
ongoing series (Eyes Open).  Single parents Marcus and Amy find love in the workplace, HR be damned.  Amy contains multitudes and the portrait of her as a mother is especially real and sweet.
@whatsnewalycat - Din (Mandalorian) x OFC Charlie
ongoing series (Passenger).  Gritty, dark, cool AU where Din Djarin is a trucker/bounty hunter and Charlie is making her way west.  this fic has a lot of postmodern energy.
@yespolkadotkitty - Pero (Great Wall) x OFC Jade
complete series (Fighting Blind).  Fun, winsome adventure between a museum curator and our favorite Spanish warrior.  Love the time-travel element, the nod to the Asian diaspora, and the rich world-building.  This series is stay-up-past-your-bedtime reading.
feel free to share your fic recs and favorite OCs/OFCs (your own and/or others)!  ❤️

Hi! Question for you once you've had a chance to finish S3 of Ted Lasso: I'd love to hear your perspective on how S3 could have unfolded in a more fulfilling way. No pressure, of course, but I enjoy reading your insights. :)
Okay! I am rolling up my sleeves.
EXPRESSING-OPINIONS-ON-THE-INTERNET CAVEAT: I am not a media critic, and not everything in this post will be cohesive, well-thought-out, and non-contradictory. I do not for a moment pretend that my opinions are Correct, they are merely my own.
SECOND CAVEAT: At this point, with where they left arcs, I'm about 80% sure that depending on how the WGA strike goes (crossing my fingers for them) and any corporate retaliation for that, there will be a spinoff or continuation sans Ted. More of their choices make sense if that is true, even if I don't love the thought (let shows end!!!), so this is all changes I would make assuming s3 is the final season.
The thing about this season, for me, is that any given episode or moment was largely really enjoyable for me! Sure, a few quibbles, and the whole Roy and Keeley thing we will get to in a moment, but if I ignored the fact that I was watching a season, most things worked for me. Looking at it as a season, though, it was too busy, in a way that meant the show dropped a lot of things I wanted to see more of.
So, when pondering this question, I think that there's no way to keep everything I love while getting rid of only the things that annoyed me or that didn't feel right to me. And in the end, I'd rather miss things that weren't there than be annoyed with things that are present, so my take on s3 would streamline a lot of things to engage with others.
Oh boy, this is already long, time for a cut.
Change #1: Roy and Keeley do not break up. There was simply no reason for this, and especially no reason for it to happen off-screen. They can still fight and have difficulties, and Roy can deal with his mental health, but it's just unnecessary drama and I never understood it. This also prevents Roy and Jamie's weird last-episode regression to fighting over her and forcing her into shitty positions.
Change #2: Most of Keeley's plotlines change. All of the KJPR plots and characters were interesting, but they also busied the season up too much. So I'd have her actually building up a one-woman business without Jack (or, tragically, Barbara), maybe doing the Shandy thing and grappling with that for longer, or her dealing with the Establishment the way Rebecca does so often, trying to make them see her as a businesswoman and not a footballer's girlfriend.
Change #3: Beard and Jane break up. We get to carry over the threads from s2 from the Beard episode and from Higgins expressing his concern, instead of treating the way Jane treats him as comedy. We also get to counteract this show's everyone-deserves-not-just-forgiveness-for-everything-but-also-to-be-in-your-life-again message with one instance of someone setting out a boundary and sticking to it.
Change #4: Many of Nate's plots change. As with Barbara, I would really regret losing Jade, but I think there are better uses of Nate's screentime--he was set up to be a real main character in s2 and I felt like I hardly saw him in s3. What I really wanted was for Nate to learn how to have power over people responsibly, I think? I'd have chosen either for him to grit his teeth and stay at West Ham (perhaps while joining the conspiracy to overthrow Rupert) or, when he left, for him to somehow end up coaching a kids' team, and learn gentleness in authority that way. It would pick up this show's really genuinely cool theme of "once one person makes a point of stepping out of the cycle of abuse and trauma it can ripple out around them" in interesting ways.
And while there are many other tweaks I'd make (more Sam, his last focus plot was SO goddamn miserable; eliminate everything about the psychic; goodbye to Rebecca's boat stranger), I'm going to finish with the last big one, which is
Change #5: Ted gets to do something besides reinvent total football, pine for his son, and make speeches that should have been edited down to a third of their length tops. He just seems so checked out this whole season, just talking about how none of the work he's done is on him, all focused on Henry in the wrong ways, so that going back to Kansas felt more like a horrible sacrifice than a choice that will bring him fulfillment or contentment. He was always going to go back to Kansas and his son, much as I wasn't wild about that, but it doesn't feel like a new beginning for him, just like he's going back to his old life with a little more knowledge of football and more knowledge of how to model good parenting and relationships for his kid (while not, from the way I interpreted that last expression, dealing any further with his own mental health). It felt weirdly dark for this show.
(Also I know this show loves its book theming, and I know it's The Wizard of Oz (see: a song from The Wiz playing over the credits to the penultimate episode), but have they considered that in subsequent Oz books Dorothy and her family move back to Oz? Things to consider.)

Okay I have some questions about "Of Gold Silver and Jade" AU's
1. So mei still Mr and Mrs long child, but how did she ended up on the street and being found by the twins? Did her parents lost her or something? And didn't the police try to search for her?
2. And how did she stole her sword from her house, when she didn't know that is her house, and how did she get in, cuz you know the security is so tough
3. And by the time she knows that she's the descendent of the dragon of the West, did she try to find her real parent?
1. I never actually came up with a good reason as to why Mei was on the streets when Jin and Yin found her. The most I ever said is that she got attacked while out with the nanny and that later on the police only found the nanny dead and baby Mei missing.
2. She broke into the Long's house the same way that one DBF robot did. She was just... A lot louder about it.
3. Yes she does! That mostly takes place during Season 4. She and her two brothers make a whole ass family tree of people related to the dragon of the West. When she figures out that the family she stole the sword from is her family she puts off introducing herself to them due to fear and anxiety. Instead she gladly takes MK's offer of helping him as a distraction

Apparently, there are professional tv critics who felt the Jade/Nate relationship in Ted Lasso Season 3 was the worst thing to happen in the season and the show, and it appears the problem for these critics boils down to one thing: Jade was MEAN for refusing Nate any connection when he was doing his fuckboy routine to try and impress her, and it's NOT RIGHT that she saw him be sincere and decided to take a chance.
And, like, you people are literally paid to be media literate. What the entire fuck. Because it's not just that Jade finally saw Nate's true softness, but that when she teased him about it, his response was to embrace his own softness.
Nate THOUGHT he needed to be a fuckboy to get noticed and appreciated. One of the first people we see who absolutely refuses to engage with his fuckboy shit is Jade. She is NEVER impressed with him at Taste of Athens. Not even when he's head coach at West Ham. Not even when he's having dinner with a fucking supermodel.
What makes Jade give a shit about someone she is not required to give a shit about is the way he talks about the food at the restaurant. She hears him wax poetic about it with sincerity and love.
Nate gets left at his table, and Jade approaches him with dessert as herself. She's a little sarcastic and snarky. Nate's response to her light teasing is to pause for a moment, then laugh along. He recognizes the fuckboy he's been trying to shed since the ice cold realization that Rupert is NOT a goal.
Nate in season 1 or season 2 would have thrown some sort of fit. He'd have been polite on the surface but very rude not even a layer down. By the time Jade teases him lightly in season 3, he's realized his idealized idea of masculinity (Rupert) is NOT who he wants to be, and Jade's teasing clearly signals, "I'm not here for your fuckboy bullshit. But I saw you say something honest, and I do like that."
And so Nate responds honestly.
Hating Jade deciding she's willing to give Nate a chance after he says something lovely feels very much like critics being mad Nate didn't just get thrown into a pit. They wanted to stay mad at him. They saw Jade as the person they could "trust" to stay mad at him. It made them real pissy when she, instead, saw a spark of a truly nice person in him, and then brought it up in a way that he could either be nice about it or show he was a bone-deep fuckboy.
Not sorry your fave strong female character got depth and emotional maturity. Very fucking sorry people got tricked into paying you money to have bad media literacy.

Booming LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2021 [Part 1]
Tumblr media
Two of the choices for “Fan Favorite Couple” in Autostraddle’s Annual Gay Emmys in September 2021 were in animated series. Both choices are highlighted here by yellow boxes.
In December 2020, I wrote that there is “hope in the future for diverse storylines and expanded representation,” adding that there is “a lot to look forward to in 2021 in terms of animated series…[which] will undoubtedly affect the ongoing war between streaming platforms for more subscribers, profits for themselves, and film distribution itself.” That still rings true, and 2021 has even more representation that I had imagined in December 2020, with continuing series like The Owl House, Disenchantment, Helluva Boss, Star Trek: Lower Decks, the third (and final) season of Final Space, and many others. The representation in 2021 is part of the “whirlwind” of LGBTQ representation which creator Noelle Stevenson described in November 2021.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 15, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the seventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 5, 2022.
When Autostraddle, a digital lesbian culture publication, posted about their annual awards show, the Annual Gay Emmys, in September 2021, the influence of LGBTQ representation in animation was evident. [1] While most of the nominees for the categories were live-action series, there was an entire category dedicated to such series, “Outstanding Animated Series.” Harley Quinn, Blues Clues & You!, the “Obsidian” episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, The Owl House, “The Politics Episode” of One Day at a Time, and Magical Girl Friendship Squad were nominees. [2] The Harley Quinn episode “Something Borrowed,” was one of the nominees for the “Best Episode with LGBTQ+ Themes” category, and two couples in animated series were nominated for the “Fan Favorite Couple” question. When the results were announced Harley Quinn won for Outstanding Animated Series, although it was unfortunately the only animated series to win in a category. Of the series nominated, Magical Girl Friendship Squad and One Day at a Time ended in 2020, [3] Distant Lands ended in 2021, while three others are ongoing (Harley Quinn, Blue Clues & You!, and The Owl House).
Keeping this in mind, reviewer Jade King, in a review of The Owl House, said “we shouldn’t look toward giant corporations for continual queer representation.” While that still rings true, many of the shows with LGBTQ representation are produced and broadcast by such companies. For instance, of the over 20 Western animations noted in this article, almost all of them are produced by the subsidiaries of companies like Disney, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal, ViacomCBS, and Sony, which bring in more than $1 billion a year. [4] The same is the case with many of the Japanese anime series noted in this post, which tend to have more LGBTQ representation, generally, than Western animation, although the instances of representation between Western and Japanese animation is slowly reaching the same level, and Japanese anime often plays into “many problematic aspects” and stereotypes in one way or another. King also pointed out that queer representation is not a competition, but should be a collaboration, rather than putting down one show while elevating another, arguing that “queer representation isn’t a linear path to acceptance. It’s messy and inconsistent.”
In 2021, shows on streaming platforms lead the way when it came to representation. Netflix tops the list in this regard, with shows like Disenchantment, Carmen Sandiego (to a lesser extent), and City of Ghosts. With Disenchantment, the show was described as “queer through and through,” with what some would call queer vibes throughout, had its third part air on Netflix in January of 2021. Recurring characters Odval (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) and Sorcerio (voiced by Billy West) were shown to be a gay couple, while there was an implied gay couple between Big Jo (voiced by LaMarche), and his assistant, Porky. Furthermore, Princess Bean, called a “rebellious, alcoholic, adventurous princess” by one reviewer, the show’s protagonist, voiced by Abbi Jacobson, was shown to be bisexual or pansexual. This is illustrated through her kissing the elf, Elfo (voiced by Nat Faxon), trying to have sex with various men, seeming to have feelings for Lady Bowmore (voiced by Tress MacNeille), female explorer, and falling in love with a mermaid named Mora (voiced by Meredith Hagner). This is further supported by the fact that Jacobsen is bisexual herself, making the representation that much more genuine. As for Carmen Sandiego, it was more implied than anything else. In February, in Instagram Live interview, Duane Capizzi, the showrunner of Carmen Sandiego, said that it was intentional that Le Chevre (also known as Jean Paul) and El Topo (also known as Antonio) were together, and confirmed them at a couple, calling them villains which are “sweet,” but you “can’t help but love.” [5]
Tumblr media
Carmen Sandiego and Julia Argent in the Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal animated film
Some fans also speculated that protagonist Carmen Sandiego had feelings for Julia “Jules” Argent, called “Carulia” by fans, but that has not been confirmed by Capizzi or anyone on the show’s staff. Similarly, for City of Ghosts, the LGBTQ representation was subtle rather than outward like in Disenchantment. In the case of that series, Thomas, one of the show’s protagonists, a specialist of the Ghost Club and voiced by transgender child actor Blue Chapman, was non-binary, confirmed as such by show creator Elizabeth Ito. One episode of the series also showed a character with two mothers. The series, more broadly, was praised for its simple animation and characters, but having “strikingly complex” stories and background art which reflects the “realities of one of America’s richest cultural melting pots,” Los Angeles.
Disenchantment, Carmen Sandiego, and City of Ghosts were not the only Netflix shows with LGBTQ characters. The kids-oriented Ridley Jones also included such characters. The preschool animated series included a non-binary bison named Fred voiced by Iris Menas, and two characters (Aten and Kosi) voiced by Andrew Rannells and Chris Colfer, two openly gay actors. The series was created by Chris Nee, who created series like We The People and Doc McStuffins, both of which featured LGBTQ characters. Nee described herself as gay and “relatively butch” in an interview in 2021. Jacobson, who had voiced Bean in Disenchantment, voiced Katie, the protagonist of the animated film, The Mitchells vs. the Machines. In the film, she wears a pin with a rainbow flag and later is noted as having a girlfriend named Jade at film school, with the representation relatively subtle. More outward, in terms of the representation, were Chicago Party Aunt, which included a a gay man named Daniel, and Q-Force, which featured an assortment of LGBTQ characters. The latter series, which had caused great controversy and consternation online due to its use of stereotypes, features a gay protagonist named Steve Maryweather (voiced by Sean Hayes), a gay man named Benji (voiced by Gabe Liedman), a lesbian woman named Deb (voiced by Wanda Sykes), and a gay drag queen named Twink (voiced by Matt Rogers). A late-comer to this article was Arcane, the first part which aired from November 6 to November 20. Show writer Amanda Overton confirmed that Caitlyn Kiramman was a lesbian, saying that there is no word for gay or stigmatization against it in Piltover, meaning that Caitlyn could “marry any gender or race suitor,” but such a person would become “a part of her house.” Overton also said that the relationship between Caitlyn and Vi is “naturally developing,” with the trauma that Vi’s parents were killed by Enforcers, with Vi also confirmed as a lesbian as well. On Twitter, Overton said that everyone on the show’s crew is “working together to tell the same story.”
On November 25, 2021, the final season of F Is For Family, aired on Netflix. It included Louis, the gay brother of Sue, a character voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, an openly gay actor. It also included Ginny Throater, who divorces her husband, Greg Throater, and is bisexual, while Greg is gay, and divorces her as a result. Additionally, Eileen, Frank’s sister, is lesbian and becomes Ginny’s lover. The second and final season of the Netflix series, Centaurworld, premiered on December 7. It featured three gay characters: Zulius, Ched, and Splendib. Zulius, who was hinted to be gay in the show’s first season was confirmed as such in the second season, while Ched was revealed to be gay. Furthermore, Zulius is voiced by Parvesh Cheena, an openly gay actor.
Other than shows on Netflix, there were multiple series on other streaming platforms included LGBTQ characters. For instance, Volume 8 of RWBY, running from November 2020 to March 2021, which streamed on the Rooster Teeth website, featured a trans woman named May Marigold, who is voiced by a trans woman, Kdin Jenzen, a bisexual catlike woman named Blake Belladonna (voiced by Arryn Zech), and various lesbian characters. The latter included Ilia Amitola (voiced by Cherami Leigh) and a couple (Saphron and Terra Cotta-Arc) who have a child named Adrian. At the same time, the first season of Invincible, which aired on Amazon Prime from March to April 2021, included a gay recurring character named William Francis Clockwell, voiced by openly gay actor Andrew Rennells.
HBO Max, also owned by Warner Media like Rooster Teeth, featured a gay couple, Jonny Quest and Hadji Sing, in Jellystone!, while Young Justice, which focuses on young superheroes from DC comics, has a rash of such characters. Specifically, Kaldur’ahm/Aqualad (voiced by Khary Payton) is polysexual, while Marie Logan (voiced by Danica McKellar) is bisexual or lesbian, Eduardo “Ed” Dorado Jr. (voiced by Freddy Rodriguez) is gay, Violet Harper (voiced by Zehra Fazal) is genderqueer, Wyynde (voiced by Robbie Daymond) is gay, and Harper Row (voiced by Fazal) is bisexual. The second half of the fourth season of Young Justice premiered in late October of 2021 and aired until December 30, 2021. While Kaldur reappeared in the newest season and with speaking lines, characters such as Ed, Bart, Violet, and Harper either had no lines, were only pictured, or only their voices were heard. At the same time, Logan died in Season 2, Wynnde has not made an appearance. These are unfortunate developments.
The HBO Max preschool series, Little Ellen, featured same-sex couples, with a second part of season one released in October, while Summer Camp Island, which also airs on HBO Max, includes a non-binary couple (Alien King and Puddle) and two presumably gay ghosts. It was also implied in various episodes that Timothy Brice Campbell in the HBO Max series Close Enough was either gay or bisexual. The second and presumably final season of gen:LOCK premiered on HBO Max and it featured a genderfluid character named Val(entina) Romanyszyn. Her character was not only groundbreaking as a genderfluid character by smashing apart tropes attributed to such characters, but is voiced by a non-binary pansexual voice actor named Asia Kate Dillon. Val confirmed that she was pansexual in the same season and Robert Sinclair was shown to be gay, with a boyfriend named Chris.

DuckTales Character Songs! (Part 4)
And now, here’s the last of 4 parts of my DuckTales character playlist. This time, I’ll be highlighting songs for recurring characters from Season 3 (with one exception, mind you). Sorry it’s a bit late, but regardless, it’s here.
Links to my previous songs:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 2, continued
Part 3
Part 3, continued
And once again, a shoutout to @glowyjellyfish on brainstorming these some with me.
Black Heron
Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones
First off, I’m kicking myself a little, because how did I forget doing a song for Heron to this point? That said, I guess it kinda makes sense having her song here, considering she was such a big part of F.O.W.L., the main villains of Season 3, so…yeah.
Anyway, this song is very serious, blunt, and kinda dark, like her. It’s also kind of a nod to the fact that the Darkwing Duck iteration of F.O.W.L. was largely a shadowy organization without a real concrete face of it.
Steelbeak
POWER by Kanye West
I was going back and forth as to whether I should use this song. But ultimately, I did. At times during the song, the title is a reference to a power trip, which Steelbeak ultimately did go on when he used the Intelli-Ray in The Last Adventure! Kanye is very bombastic and polarizing, a lot like Steelbeak himself. A lot of the time, he chooses to use his brute strength to forge ahead, and tries to prove all his doubters wrong, even those he works with. So really, regardless of what you might think of Kanye, his music works well for Steelbeak’s narrative.
Daisy Duck
Grown Woman by Beyoncé
No original version of the song? Come on, Spotify!
Anyway, as easy as it could be to choose a song about Daisy, it’s also just as easy to mess it up. She’s way more that just a pretty face. She’s an absolute go-getter that knows what she wants out of life, has worked super hard in the fashion industry, and given both her age and her status, she can do what she wants, but doesn’t let it go to her head.
Phantom Blot
Man in Black by Johnny Cash
Besides his attire, this song kinda plays off of Blot’s backstory, being against magic after Magica laid waste to his town. His attire presumably took on a more somber tone after this, and he started hunting magic users down. Until things can be seen as brighter for him, the Blot will wear all black.
Gosalyn Mallard
Whatever It Takes by Imagine Dragons
Gosalyn has had a rough life. Her parents die, she loses her grandfather, she’s been on the run from her life circumstances. However, she thrives off of the uncertainty, pushing through barriers, just doing whatever she can to get through life. Also, I just feel like ID’s music in general really suits her edgy, sometimes jaded personality.
The Fearsome Five (well, Four)
Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood and the Destroyers
We didn’t get much of the Fearsome Five (especially Negaduck) in DuckTales, but I think this song sums them up pretty well as villains.
Kit Cloudkicker and Molly Cunningham
Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters
The Greatest Show by Panic! at the Disco from The Greatest Showman
Honestly, I gotta mention this TaleSpin duo in the same breath here. I’d say these songs are mostly self-explanatory. Kit’s a pilot trying to hone his talent (don’t really remember TaleSpin, but from what I’ve gathered, DuckTales did his character all wrong); Molly started her own sky circus, and what better song to embrace the role of ringleader with than this banger? (It has grown on me over the years, I won’t lie.)
May and June (Duck)
Who Are the Mystery Girls? by New York Dolls
Okay, like with a couple of the other songs I’ve used, the lyrics aren’t the most appropriate to describe the situation, but the title…yeah, it’s just the general sentiment for most of The Last Adventure!: “Who are the mystery girls?” Some of the characters, Webby especially, are just trying to figure out May and June.
And that’s it! My complete list of character songs for DuckTales! I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did making the list. As for my next musical foray into DuckTales, I will say this: it’s arguably a bit more complicated than just character songs. So stay tuned!

Ted Lasso Season 3 Spoilers
Ya'll this season is so off to me. there are definitely lovely moments but so many storylines contain things that are just so out of character? Look I want Nate to have his redemption arc as much as the next gal, but where is all of this self confidence and kindness coming from? He wants to apologize to Ted in the elevator and then he won't even wave to Henry at the match? I get it Rupert intimidates him, but then why the hell would he invite him to his attempt at the diamond dogs if he knows Rupert wouldn't support that kind of vulnerability? And I get it healing isn't linear and you're gonna have backslide-y moments, but I don't really get what motivated Nate to start becoming a kinder/less self hating person in the first place. He's been nothing but rewarded for shitty behavior at West Ham. He doesn't seem to even be that sorry about what he did to Ted (and lets be real the entire team, that sign meant a hell of a lot to them). I just don't get it. It seems like he'd make that journey through love and encouragement of a supporting environment or to resist against a super toxic one, and Nate is somehow doing neither? Like how is he doing all this work without either a) recognizing Ruperts way of doing things is highly toxic and making a choice to not be like him b) Realizing that his own actions were very harmful and try to make amends c) receiving some other form of support that's helping him learn actual self love. And at least on screen none of those things have happened.
Then there's the whole thing with Jade, Who is this woman? It seems like we know nothing about her besides that she works for Taste of Athens and she doesn't care for Nate and suddenly one comment in defense of her workplace and she's his girlfriend? Suddenly she's swinging back and forth like a pendulum between that same cold aloofness as before and extreme warmth and understanding? I get that Nate has changed and that can be alluring, but I don't think we know enough about her to make that character development meaningful for *her* and not just for him. She is the only character I can think of that just feels like someone else's partner and not her own person. I'm not saying I need a whole Jade backstory, but she just doesn't even seem like a whole character. What is motivating her to go out with Nate all of a sudden? It's that question that makes that huge step forward for Nate feel hollow.
Then there's all these characters who I cannot figure out what their thematic value is. Shandy? She was introduced as this smart (if rough around the edges) friend of Keeley's and she turns out to be just a total psycho. For what purpose? what did Keeley learn? what did Shandy represent? To just not trust people? To not give people chances? Why spend so much time on that character just to tell a story that is just so not like this show. I do kinda get the point of Zava, you can't just win on one guys coattails, you have to learn to be a team, even though I think that story could've been way shorter. Then there's Jack, we're supposed to believe Keeley just doesn't know who gave her the money to start her business and then after finding out begins a relationship with that person? Especially this episode 8 there were so many moments where I was like Keeley for the love of god break up with this woman and then she just doesn't, despite Jack being so so so awful to her. It seems like we're giving Keeley so much more airtime just to tell the audience she's actually very incompetent, unconfident, and oblivious, despite the fact that the show has been telling us she's the exact opposite for two seasons. What is the fucking reason?
Even Ted has just been drifting for forever. I thought episode 6 was a turning point and he really got back into coaching, but now he's skipping practice and dinners with his son in order to stalk Michelle? What? I'd understand that behavior from season 1 or 2 Ted but Jesus we've got four episodes to clean all these storylines up and so far they've done nothing but create questions.
I just remember the first two seasons I felt like we were solving problems along the way, or at least laying the foundations for whatever growth needed to be done and I feel like we're 8 episodes in and the only direction we've moved is backward.
Like I said I still love this show, I loved the Amsterdam episode, I loved finally getting to meet Sam's dad in person, I love all of Jamie's amazing moments this season, I love that Bex is getting her little barbs in at Rupert, I love Beard and Henry's Hey Jude scene, I love Colin and Trent in Amsterdam (actually went to the homomonument yesterday because damn I love that scene so much, and my mom lives nearby) but they are not crafting this show the way they used to, and that makes me sad.

LEGO MONKIE KID S4 INTRO
IM GOING NUTS
so the last shot of season 3, we've all seen it, we all know it
Tumblr media
also heavily featured in the s4 intro, this is obviously the next Big Thing
however!!! unlike previous intros, there are very few enemies featured, even major ones, besides the opening shots that summarize the previous seasons. either the show is keeping its antagonists very close to the chest, or the main conflict may come from the effect of this artifact, rather than a character with agency
where before there were shots of minor enemies, now there are shots that appear to be from swk's past, which means BACKSTORYYYYY AND I AM LOSING IIIIIIIIITTTT
WE GET TO SEE THE HERO AND THE WARRIOR BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
mac's always been a sourpuss uiervuivefriubviub
now THIS ONE I am also VERY interested in seeing. doesn't seem like an enemy, possibly someone that used to be an ally of swk's? obviously theres tension, it looks like someone leaving flower fuit mountain. when it zipped by the first time I watched it, the location and hair made me of the other celestial monkeys, but now that I've got a good look at him, I'm not so sure they would be, yknow, blue with bright pink eyes
Tumblr media
also swk hanging out with demon buddies
Tumblr media
demon buddies FIGHTING HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
I believe swk is the small figure next to dbk's right arm, though in the two frames he's in, it looks like he's got a cape, which he doesn't have in the other shots we can see him in. I'm also noticing that if that is swk with a costume change, macaque and the other demon buddies have the same clothes and armor they did in the previous, more relaxed shots
the other thing Im SUPER FUCKIN HYPE ABOUT!!!!!!! IS THAT THE GANG GETS POWEEEERSSS
tang's is no surprise, as it was started in s3, but bro it is such a RELIEF to see him doing something other than screaming
Tumblr media
BUT LOOKIT PIGSEY HES SO FUCKING COOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media
here are some comparisons between the character shots from the s3 intro vs the s4 intro (s3 above, s4 below). mei and tang's are pretty similar (mei's has been badass from day 1, MEI is badass from day 1, cant make cooler what is already the fucking coolest), though mei's features a new location (I imagine her great-times-a-thousand grandpa's house), and tang's seems to be hinting toward Tripitaka's story, rather than a generic feature shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUT THE OTHER TWO O H
LOOK HOW FUCKING BADASS ZHU BAJIE LOOOOOKKKSSS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND MY MAN SAAAANNNDDDAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHA WUJING FUCK IT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHAKES HIM SHAKES HIM SHAKES HIM
Tumblr media
ALSO!!!!! NEW OUTFIIIIITTSSSS
Tumblr media
I WOULD be hype about sandy fighting, but the s3 intro also had him throwing punches, which he never actually did (except to scare the piss out of the one spider hehehehehehehe)
BUT. THE BIGGEST THING, THAT I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED FOR
IS THIS SHOT RIGHT HERE
Tumblr media
THATS THE WHOLE GROUP. THATS BOTH WHOLE GROUPS
THATS SUN WUKONG ON THE RIGHT. AND NOWHERE TO BE SEEN ON THE LEFT
YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS
Tumblr media
WE'VE GOT MIND CONTROL TO MAKE LOVED ONES FIGHT AGAIN
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
FINAL THOUGHTS!!!!!!!! between the flashbacks and the period-style outfits, seems like that scroll thing's effects have something to do with time travel, and the gang gets blasted to the past. my impression is that they either get powers, or are imbued with their predecessor's powers in the possible case that they take their places, cause of the whole, black goop thing. and it looks like we might even get a full history on swk, before the journey to the west takes place!!!!!
I'm so excited for those more familiar with the mythology to parse far more information than this, such as what artifact that black scroll actually is, the black goop, who is in front of (what I believe to be) the jade emperor in the fight with demon buddies, predictions for how that information might effect the plot, etc
as a bonus, some extra comparisons that arent really important, but I am still very happy to see
the new shot of the fight with lbd im SOBBING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mk's staff is back!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and something I only noticed now that Ive gone through both these intros frame by frame
mk flashing to swk during the above shots AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this expression goes by so fast I never noticed how FUCKING CHEEKY HE LOOKS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
MY BOY GO KICK SOME AAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
