And Then There Were... a miniature counting book that I illustrated and bound by hand. The book is 5 1/2 x 3 inches, and features the extinct Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet, Heath Hen, Eskimo Curlew, Labrador Duck, Great Auk, Dusky Seaside Sparrow, Bachman's Warbler, Ivory Billed Woodpecker, and Kauai ʻōʻō. Illustrated in traditional pen & ink and watercolor. Like Grasping at Feathers, this book also includes cut-out elements. The concertina-style pages fold out to form one continuous spread. Created as an edition of 5, but I have plans to do another larger run.

Kaua'i O'o (Moho braccatus)
"They're extinct and have a really sad story, and I would like everyone else to hear the last male's song and be sad too." "you said to submit birds that "have changed your *life*-- okay, maybe not that deep" but this bird has LEGITIMATELY CHANGED MY LIFE. i watched this video: [posted below] (please please please watch it it's a short animated film on John Sincock's experiences in Kauai with the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō) just as i was finishing Bill Bryson's 'A Short History of Nearly Everything', in which he chronicles the human impact on rate of human extinction--and especially birds, SINGLEHANDEDLY (or doublehandedly, since it was the combo of the animation and the book) kickstarting my obsession with extinct birds. I already really liked birds, but there's something just so tragically gorgeous about the extinct ones. I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THEM AND NONE OF THEM ARE COHERENT ENOUGH FOR WORDS."
youtube
Hey so I cried so much over this video and I already knew about the story of the Kaua'i O'o. Hawaiian birds are facing extinction at an alarming rate and really need all of the help they can get. Many other native bird species are struggling right now with habitat loss, invasive species, and mosquito borne illness threatening the last of their populations.
As for Kaua'i O'o, this is a bird we can never get back. There is no possible hope hiding on another island, because that's not how island birds work. The family this bird belongs to, Mohoidae or Hawaiian honeycreepers, is an entirely extinct family of birds, and the only avian family that has gone entirely extinct in modern times.
If the story of this bird impacts you, please hold that impact close to your heart. Fighting against habitat degradation is hard enough already, but it is possible to save what we have left.
Sources:
While not bird specific, this organization works with all kinds of Hawaiian wildlife. I wanted to include something at the end of this, as it can be too easy to fall into the doom-and-gloom cycle and forget that we can do things to help impact our world.

"The song of an island, the call of a friend
Heard never again, out in the world
If you were alone how could you have known
That yours was a final breath
Of language surviving through an age?
'Til only a name was left
Too hard to believe"

Animal of the Day!
Kauai O'o A'a (Moho braccatus)
Tumblr media
Extinction Date- 2000
Habitat- Kaua’i Island
Size (Weight/Length)- 20 cm
Diet- Snails; Fruits; Flower nectar; Insects
Cool Facts- The Kauai O’o A’a was a honeycreeper native to the Hawai’ian island of Kaua’i. These small birds nested in the thick forests of the island and licked flowers for nectar. Kauai O’o A’a relied on tree hollows in old trees to create their nests and as these forests were destroyed to make room for houses, the honeycreepers were rapidly declining. Introduction of invasive predators like the Polynesian rat and small Indian mongoose began to wipe out Hawai’i’s native birds. Mosquitos carrying avian malaria and hurricanes ended up wiping the rest of the population out. The last living bird was spotted in 1985 and the last singing male was recorded in 1987. Out of the original 50 species of Hawai’ian honeycreepers, only 17 species remain today and all are endangered. Efforts to reduce avian malaria, reduce invasive predator populations, and captive breeding efforts hope to increase the populations of the remaining honeycreepers.
Rating- 14/10 (The last recorded call: https://youtu.be/x2KH5AoyeBc?si=9TFYp7R2NKR-rXlB)

This week, the kauaʻi ʻōʻō was officially declared extinct.
These birds mated for life. The last recording of the species is a male singing half of a duet, calling out for a mate who will never answer.

Yeah, sorry I can't come into work. Yeah. It's about the last of a species calling out for a mate and getting no response. Thanks for understanding

since ice is associated with the past , there being a literal "flow of time , " what if instead of prophetic dreams , lilli gets glimpses into the past ?
it can vary from simple experiences , tragedies , to world-altering events that happened back then . and this ability goes unrealized for a while because , unlike premonitions which reveal the future , the past . . . has already happened . and besides , what child doesn't dream of dinosaurs or something referring to a history lesson they might have gotten the day before ? just shows she was listening !
what becomes kinda eerie is that she recalls the exact feeling of it ; specific details , names , or places-- and sometimes the feelings can be very distressing for a little girl to be dreaming of . or she may speak about creatures or places that match a certain time period that have been long forgotten or that she had no prior knowledge knowing about . it's like how little ones "recall a past life," except lilli's just dreaming about the past in general .

The last male Kauai 'O'o singing for a female that will never come. Just something about his song just makes me feel an emotion I cannot put into words, been on my mind the past few days. Rest well sweet angel, perfect in every way, may your song live on and cannot say sorry enough for what we humans did.

whenever i hear that audio of that extinct Hawaiian bird it makes me feel so sad
to add on: it's also weird to think there's people alive out there (as of me posting this) who have actually heard a female bird with the male bird's song. and have seen the bird alive, in person.

Y'all know about the Kauai o'o (a type of extinct bird)? How there was a single male singing for a female that wouldn't respond because he was the last of his kind.
That's what I'm basing Drip off of now.
*runs away to sob uncontrollably about the Kauai o'o for the ???th time*

Note
*There is a thundering roar, from powerful, fast-paced footsteps. Like a single man had found the strength to stampede with the strength of an entire herd of regal stallions. The sound of heels hitting the ground sounds familiar. A voice comes from the distance, calling out like a desperate melody from the tired lungs of a tired bird. Finally, an answer to the Kauai O'o* muuuuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE!!!
*I tackle hug the angel, as my noose of rosary goes slack and releases my heart. The pedestal I have placed my god upon tumbles down as I cling to the angel. We fall to the filth of the earth together, with the freedom lucifer must have felt falling from grace. A sweet, delicious sin, a forbidden fruit, gifted from the divine. If my soul would leave me, my spirit would haunt him in this grip. My very being is shaking, not from tears for I cried them all, no. My muscles ache from how tight I cling to him, as though if I squeeze tighter, I will be one with that is holy*

[he glances around for the source of the strange noise, form drawing stiff.
then he hears it. his voice. with only a few seconds to prepare himself, he-]
[-is tackled straight to the ground, the wind knocked out of him. his wings turn a bright yellow-orange, feathers tipped with black, as they're pinned against his back.
he fights to escape his grip for a few moments, before deeming it useless, and falling limp. a confusing swirl of feeling-- some positive, some not-- pains his chest.]
[god damn it.]

Wanna hear something heartbreaking. Listen to the song of the kauai o'o. Pretty much drove me to tears when I first heard it.

Want to hear something even more heartbreaking? They mated for life, and the song is supposed to be half of a duet. Here's a recording of a male and female singing together.
