Love how in the hunter exam, Illumi sits at the front while Hisoka sits at the back. It says so much about their personalities.

The obvious that Illumi is akin to an A+ student. He has his hands on his lap, hes at the very front of the room, and it hints to his personality as a very blunt and forward person.

Meanwhile, Hisoka sits at the back with his hands crossed. He's quiet, he keeps to himself when he doesn't want to be the center of attention. Also very much hints to his shyness thats revealed later!

while i love how both versions portrayed hisoka's true bloodlust finally shining through, 1999's portrayal strikes me as much more visceral.

gon, the brave and quick-witted kid that we've been following throughout the exams, is faced with mortal fear for the first time during the exam. and for once, he is scared. terrified, even. he instinctively curls into a ball, shaking and pleading to be somewhere, ANYWHERE else than here, and the audience is reminded that despite being leagues above most of the other candidates, he's still a 12 year old boy looking for his father. and yet, despite feeling this terror; despite learning what fear really entailed, he continues on. he takes a few uncertain steps, and he's running forward once again.

meanwhile, 2011's take strikes me as very matter of fact; hisoka is scary, and gon is scared, but he quickly gets over it and moves on. it's still a very, VERY well done scene, and it gets the message across well (i actually do not know which hisoka i prefer between the two, they're both so unnerving), but 1999 is so good at humanizing its characters that i can't help but praise it for making me feel like i was there. like i could feel the exact same horror that gon felt, down to the last frame. it's difficult to achieve that sensation, but they ABSOLUTELY succeeded.

#can i also just talk about the scene in 1999 where gon is running after just stealing hisoka's badge #and you can hear his heartbeat while calm music plays in the background #only for the colors to distort when geretta tranquilizes him and the ost falls silent?? [Hisoka looked up at the blue sky as well. his annoying personality changing to a calmer one]

I'm rewatching Hunter x Hunter (watched a good portion of it when I was pretty small), and I am pleased to conclude yet again that I only enjoy my favorite anime more as I age. I have more developed taste and more literacy to appreciate my media with. The new delights far outweigh the slight fading of some of the other aspects that used to draw me in.

#delicious. absolutely delicious #for instance I am less *viscerally* fascinated by Killua's cool factor now. but I have way more interest in his psychology #I enjoy Gon as a comedic character more now AND I'm picking up more on the slow-burn horror of his transformation into something dangerous #I cringe more at the violence but I also have more ThoughtsTM about heroism and tournament-based story patterns so that balances out #overall I am actually enjoying this show way more now #(and I enjoyed it as a kid too!! it was just that I pretty much only was interested in the Cool Factor at the time) #although I was surprised and horrified to realize that Hisoka is a predator. did not pick up on that as a child and thank goodness #hunterxhunterblogging #just gonna continue my anime blogging tagging conventions I think #probably won't post much hxh at all but I had Thoughts tonight !
