As someone who frequently had these types of nightmares, as the eldest child with too many responsibilities, this hit different T.T

Mary is extremely relatable to anyone who has had to suffer the conflict of interests of being a child but also being the eldest. The one who is expected to be responsible, to be almost a tertiary parent, to be the role model.

Knight Terror Shazam spoilers below

Mary is the oldest of many in the newest version of shazam comics. It doesn't really matter that they're all foster siblings, the stress she feels is the same.

Watching her run into this buring building, as her siblings calmly ask her for help saying

"We're gonna burn to death"

Because who else would help them? Who else would they ask? The stress and burden of this responsibility is ever present.

The worse part about these nightmares, is that you'll "wake up". You won't notice all the oddities around you, the relief from being free of your previous nightmare is too palpable.

But... you're still asleep.

And, of course, this all feels normal.

And when you realize it's a nightmare, you really really don't. The world itself, the world of dreams, exists with its own rules. Everything there is real. No matter if the cars change sizes mid scene, or the people you were with vanish the moment you aren't looking. The rules of dreaming is that

EVERYTHING IS REAL

Maybe, this hit too close to home for me.

The agony of desperately looking for, protecting, and failing your siblings. A responsibility no one asks for but must endure. The worst part. The role of an eldest sibling is the worst role when it comes to this responsibility. A parent has authority to actually keep a child safe. A sibling will only be blamed when something goes wrong, will suffer that burden, but never have the same resources and authority as the actual guardian. They won't have the same power.

Thus, the nightmares about the lack of power to save them. The lack of ability.

I feel for this version of Mary. Even if she never expresses the stress of being eldest of this found family, it is so clear how it batters at her.

Then, the climax of this matter. Of the nightmare. It's not over, but this is where most would shoot up in bed, unable to dream anymore past their own "death". In normal circumstances, at least.

There is no one to save her. After watching her siblings burn up to nothingness at the word "shazam," helpless. She, too, suffers from her own perceived powerlessness.
