Is there any better feeling than weeks of grime and cobwebs being scrubbed away? It’s been so long. Too long. Edward rests with his eyes closed, wearing an expression of pure bliss as his driver and fireman both scrub him clean with the utmost care. The water runs black with coal dust, and as caked mud and sludge and chipped paint are dug out of crevices and the cleaned areas carefully rubbed over with a polishing cloth, Edward finally starts feeling like his old self again.
At last, Sidney climbs up and tends to his whistle, scraping out the congealed mess that was blocking him up and stealing his voice away. ‘Give it a try,’ he says when he has finished, and the resulting joyful peep almost blows him off his ladder.

The one good thing that came out of having a weird accidentally polyamorous relationship when I was 14 was that those mfs LOVED giving me things and money. Sure everything else about it was traumatic but I had that 2015 galaxy sweater drip 😎🔥

Back on my "ripping off Mucha to make fanart" bullshit I guess.
I mostly did this cause if you've seen my art before you know I can NEVER GET SKIN RIGHT. Like. Literally can't figure it out. Even if I get the color right, the ink (or watercolor, or acrylic) comes out all blotchy and uneven.
So I decided to try (knockoff copic) markers and oh. Cool that worked lol.

okay its the end of the year im going to talk about my bullet journal themes
Tumblr media
for some reason i didnt do a proper cover page for 2022 but heres the quote page. i did the clouds in tombow dual brush pens and the highlights were done in clear sakura gelly roll stardust pens
Tumblr media
january 2022 i did aliens bc aliens is cute. i did this setup with various knockoff tombow dual brush pens an artists loft fineliner and a bunch of assorted gelly rolls
Tumblr media
february was a rlly fun setup. i was kind of in my feelings so i did doves and burning olive branches. no further commentary. i dont remember which pens i used
Tumblr media
my aquarium no longer looks like this so im glad i decided to immortalize it in my bullet journal! it was just a fun and silly theme. i love fun and silly themes
Tumblr media
gwins bday is in april and his fave animals EVER are penguins. i dont remember which black marker i used for this setup. it might have been the tombow fudenosuke but dont quote me
Tumblr media
i think the soap bubbles theme was my favorite theme this year. this was done entirely in tombow dual brush pens. i messed around with scrapbook paper for the first time and it really added a lot to the setup
Tumblr media
no quote page for june bc i barely used my bujo in june. this setup is entirely done in copic multiliner and fluorescent mildliners
Tumblr media
i wanted to mess around with low effort setups in july since i barely used my june setup so i did blood. you could adapt this to be goo or whatever if you didnt use red but this was all done in crayola supertips
Tumblr media
and then i did a super high effort spread for august. this is in my second place spot for favorite theme. the washi and stickers were a lot of fun
Tumblr media
low effort theme. again. i used only kuretake brushables for these
Tumblr media
and then i put entirely too much effort into october. the leaves were colored with sakura koi watercolor brush pens the wood was a kuretake fudebiyori the grass was an ohuhu natural brush pen and the pumpkins and flapjack were done in tombow dual brush pens
Tumblr media
i was lazy again in november. jam jars. they were super duper adorable but also insanely low effort. i dont even remember which pens i used for all of these. i think the strawberry jam was an ohuhu natural brush pen orange was a staedtler dual ended art marker lemon was a crayola supertip raspberry was a kuretake fudebiyori and grape was i think a kuretake real brush pen. the lettering was done in a pentel fude touch sign pen
Tumblr media
and then december was simple and graceful. i loved how the lettering came out. the pinks were done in kuretake real brush pens and the blacks were done in an off black crayola supertip. so yeah. thats my bullet journal for the year. damn.

Speaking of Hyper-fixations
I can't always tell when a new interest is a genuine "long-term" interest or an HF at the beginning. And I've wasted so much money on hyper-fixations over the past few years - It's become a real problem. Being broke lately has helped me slow down a lot lol. But I can still see all the stuff I've collect in pursuit of an interest and omg.
I'm looking at the all the alcohol markers I've bought as I type this now (3 different biga** kits). I've had the markers for years and I'm just now trying to learn with them, earnestly. Poscas I've used only once, Prismacolor colored pencil sets, high qual gouache (literally never used), watercolors, traditional inking, origami, roller-skates (oh my god the roller-skates ᇂ_ᇂ), aquarium (fish), and most recently Perler Beads - along with a bunch of other nonsense. I still do perler crafts from time to time, but I don't do nearly as many crafts as when I first started out. I was making at least 1 craft a day, and buying new colors almost constantly. I remember really feeling like I needed the pastel blue AND the light blue like they aren't a quarter of a shade different. But it was so serious to me at the time.
My interest in these past hobbies hasn't disappeared, just dulled? So I hope to come back to them later, as I have with the markers. As expected, I suck at the supplies I've listed above since I rarely used them (if at all). It's like the obsession began to fade immediately after receiving the supplies. In my defense, it physically hurts to use expensive supplies willy nilly, though it's really the only way to improve in an art medium. I even struggle using my knockoff copics despite them being relatively cheap and I can't buy singles from this brand as far as I know.
[sigh] But I gotta do what I gotta do if I'm ever going to use markers like Takeshi Obata...

Unasked for marker guide/review because...I have thoughts. Those thoughts are that Copics are overrated.
I. So you wanna get started on using alcohol markers. General things to remember:
a. swatch markers on each paper you use. Colors can look different per paper.
b. do not work in an enclosed space. They smell like Sharpies sometimes.
c. there are lots of videos on Youtube on marker technique. Look up blending and layering.
II. Now you wanna pick your marker set.
When I started, the advice was to get grey markers only at first, and build a collection of (expensive) markers from there. Now though I think the price has gone down enough that I say: get as big a set of colors as you can afford.
Tumblr media
a. An okay option at the "dirt cheap" range are Touchfive/Touchnew/Touch Quici markers. I've lumped these together because they all perform the same, have the same colors, and I'm pretty sure they're manufactured at the same factory.
You can do the usual marker techniques with these markers, but I recommend using good paper. You'll want smooth, thick (120gsm or above) absorbent paper. A lot of markers can work on printer paper--not these.
The problem with these markers is that the ink is too "runny". It soaks the paper too quickly, so layering becomes more difficult on thin paper. That also affects blending, as the lighter color "bleaches out" the darker color. Proper paper helps with that problem, if not eliminates it.
Tumblr media
b. M&G Signme and Superior markers. These two cost about the same (affordable but not as cheap as the first one). These are difficult to find now. Also the color range is not great-- you won't get pastels and muted skin colors. However, the ink is much better quality than Touchetc., and my M&G markers have lasted 5 years now.
Tumblr media
c. Finecolour (also listed as Fakale) markers. Copic knockoffs that are actually pretty good. Layers well, blends well. They also have ink refills and nib replacements (if available in your country). If you want a fine nib, they have that kind. If you prefer brush nibs, they got that too. The only cons are that they are not that easy to find, and the skin colors tend to be warmer.
Tumblr media
d. Kurecolor and Promarkers. Lumped together because of similar nib types, quality, price, and color range. Promarkers probably have the best, smoothest ink of any marker I've used. They don't have the "spotting"* problem of some markers (even Copic has that problem), and they can work even on the cheapest of papers. Con? They have a fine nib instead of a brush nib. The Brushmarker (brush version of Promarker) has a weird draggy brush that I don't like.
spotting is what I call the tiny white dots that appear on the paper after it's soaked with the marker ink. It's not that visible, especially at a good distance, but it means the color isn't completely smooth. The effect varies with colors and papers.
Tumblr media
e. Touch Twin/Touch Brush markers by Shinhan. Didn't I cover Touch markers before? No, the cheap ones are the knockoffs of these. Actual Shinhan Touch markers are more expensive than even Promarkers. The ink is a little worse than Promarkers (they have a bit of that spotting), but they are still pretty good. Light colored markers don't last though-- the dye fades after a few years. Pros: the color selection is beautiful, especially the muted tones. Almost reminds me of Copic.
f. Ohuhu markers. I haven't used these, but they're well recommended and they're cheaper than Copics. Don't buy Copics.

Going to start compiling a list of duplicate colors today. There will duplicate lists for both felt tip water based pens and alcohol based markers. The brands involved with each set of duplicates are listed below
Felt tip color duplicates: list of brands
Staedtler
Papermate
Marvy LePen
Noted felt tip pens (previously purchased at target, appear as some sort of LePen knockoff)
Stabilo
Arteza (circa 2016-2017, the models that looked like steadtler knockoffs*
Studio Series
TUL (brand that is specific to Office Depot / Office Max)
*most arteza pens will be identified using names that I’ve assigned to each color. The color names are either granted by the cap color of the marker or the ink color.
Alcohol based color duplicates: list of brands
Prismacolor Markers
Copic Markers
Tombow ABT Pro Markers
Chameleon Markers
Spectrum Noir Markers
Winsor Newton Promarker
Art Advantage Markers
Masters Touch Markers
AD Chartpak Markers*
Artists Loft Markers
* AD Chartpak Markers are OIL BASED, but will be used for comparison purposes as an exception.
On an additional note, any personal insights on color duplicates (for brands unlisted from here) would be much appreciated! I haven’t been able to see what alcohol marker brands are on Amazon these days, so I haven’t catalogued any of them.

In other news I bought some sort of knockoff "copic markers" from Five Below the other day. They work surprisingly well!
(Bonus: lineart picture I took in case things went awry with the markers.)
