Love for Love's sake | Things you didn't notice #2

I had these guys for two (2) episodes and I'm already insane about them, no joke.

That said, the second episode was a bit less rich in terms of hidden cultural or language meanings, but I found some untranslated stuff and wordplay! So let's dig in 👀🧭

Messages that Myungha texted to Yeowoon after their first meeting:

Lmao, he is so annoying (affectionately).

Since the debuff was all three guys eating extremely spicy food, Myungha offers both Kyunghoon and Yeowoon water. Later, the two of them are outside and you can see Myungha caring about Yeowoon once again, asking him whether he was alive and bringing him "delicious milk".

It's nothing special, but if your country's cuisine doesn't really have spicy food (like mine), finding out that the best defence against spicy food is milk and not water usually is a surprise.

And this is where I laughed :D The writers of this show are funny because they keep playing with character's names. In my previous post I talked about how Cha Yeowoon's name got used along with the term "my favourite".

And here, Sangwon shows that he has a nickname for Ahn KyungHoon (안경훈) as Ahnkyung Hyung (안경형), which translates to "Hyung with glasses" aka "Senior Glasses". (Hyung means "older brother/older male friend" in Korean)

So writers literally hid "Glasses" in the surname+name of the character wearing, well, glasses. I don't think it's a cheap move because he is literally a character from the book and other characters-bullies get to use the wordplay. At first I didn't even realize it because I read Ahn as a surname and Kyunghoon as a name, but if you read it all together, there are glasses (ahnkyung) inside 😅

How Russians Talk: A Tip

Many times in my life I have been in a situation where a person who never spoke a sliver of Russian would get an impression of me or my partner to be emotionless or blunt and crass.

Some time last year my friend @kraestburns actually helped me come to an understanding why is that so, since they were trying to learn Russian for the fun of it.

Russian is somehow more complex, but also much more simpler than English. We lack nuance allowed by extra pieces of language, our written language lacks the emotional intonation.

This is just a result of a brain wired to think in Russian and speak Russian trying to convey the concepts and ideas in a language that it cannot utilize in full.

So next time you speak to a Russian person, do not assume outright that they are being an asshole. Chances are, they just haven't the right tools to express themselves.

accidentally almost trashed this question aaaaaaaaa pop-up window wanting to reconfirm my decision my beloved!!!!!! i was going to go with chinese because learning it on my own is super hard and im lowkey crushed but honestly im in love with the learning process. aside from it being extremely mentally challenging (bc of the afromentioned issue) it sparks so much joy. i dont wanna miss out on that. yeah so im gonna go with english. i have a super small vocabulary and my grammar is uh bad. its cursing my ability to express myself i haaaate iiiit. i dont need the learning process had that in school dont need it again

Topic: Gender Nouns

The language tips that I provide are usually in English/Spanish however, you can still apply your target language in the examples below because my language tips are for everyone and all levels. So, let’s end our introduction and start learning! This exercise focuses on your listening skills and helps you add more vocabulary to your vernacular. Remember to speak in your target language the same way you would speak in your native language which is with a strong, confident pronunciation.

Are you having difficulties learning a language? What if I told you that learning a language is not as difficult as you think. If you want to master your target language then all you have to do is be open-minded. Some languages have gender nouns while others do not. If your native tongue is English and you have encountered a word in another language like "la mesa" then you might be confused, but before you roll your eye to the side in disgust you should know that English used to be a gendered language until the Middle English period. 

Masculine vs. Feminine Nouns

What is your gender? If someone were to speak about you then they would say he or she and these nouns work the same way. Think of these words as people and call them by their appropriate gender. 

What's the difference?

Depending on the language depends on their rules for masculine and feminine nouns. In Spanish if the word ends in o it is masculine and if it ends in a then it is feminine, sometimes. Languages are like math formulas which can create irregularities so in order for you to fully know when to use masculine or feminine nouns you must follow the rules and memorize the irregular nouns.

In Japanese, if you want to refer to your boyfriend, you can say 彼氏 (kareshi) meaning something like "Mr. Guy" or "male person of importance." If you want to refer to your girlfriend, you just say 彼女 (kanojo), which just means "she" or, more literally, "that female person." Not "my woman" or "special woman." Literally the same word you'd use if you were to say, "She went to the store."

Alternatively, you can use 恋人 (koibito) for either, which means something like "person I am romantically in love with," but I think this is mostly used just for guys.

Or you can just be lazy and say "boi furendo" (boyfriend) and "gaaru furendo" (girlfriend), and wonder why you're bothering to put any effort into studying Japanese at all.

duolingo user confession: i do the exact same indonesian every night just before midnight because i a) forget to do duolingo and b) i was trying to grind for the night owl achievement except it doesn't work on the website version

anyways i've memorized this entire lesson to the point that i can hear the ifrst part of any given listening exercise and know what's coming next. i know what the first question will always be. i wish they'd let me type every lesson bc that would be a lot faster than the word bank thing that they give you.

honestly i feel like im still too german in my approach of english grammar and word construction. in english its called wood counter (which are two words and two nouns! but one term!) while in german its called Holztheke (which is two words and two small nouns but one big noun! one term!). my brain always tells me i need to adjectify the first noun in the english term because there is a space break! that means these are two different terms and one of the two must be a noun but it cant be both in this context! since the first word is supposed to describe the second one, the first must be the adjective, so it turns into wooden counter. which is wrong according to microsoft word!!! but its the only solution that doesnt has me break out in discomfort aa
