lets face it. the joker sucks as a batman villain. everybody thinks hes good because hes got a cool character design and hes been around since forever and writers keep trying to make him good, but in concept alone he fails to tap into any of the central themes or intrigue of batman, and nor does he reflect any of bruces internal conflict. really, the only use the joker has ever had was creating harley quinn, but now shes an entirely separate character from him so any short-lived relevance he may have had with her is gone. but contrary to what some may think, i dont think the joker should die. that decision would be a big deal and he'd be so dramatic about it, we'd have an entire plotline dedicated to it.... no one wants that. no one wants to see his stupid joker face for longer than physically necessary. it would also be reversed by the next reboot. no, we need a plan to make him irrelevant. more so than he already is, i mean.
first, we have batmans rogues gallery do a drag race. whos judging? poison ivy and the riddler. its green-themed. but see this is genius. cuz who hates the joker more than poison ivy and the riddler? yeah, harley quinn, who is not in attendance cuz she knows whats about to happen. in fact, she planned this, and shes using this as her cover to mess around with selina and try to convince her to be harley and pams third again. it wont work, but the dedication and jakey-haterism is commendable.
the drag race itself is not the focus, however. see, the entire thing has been set up to generate the most drama possible. everyone except for the joker has received invitations that say the show (which is being live broadcast to an unwilling audience of 150,000, all of whom thought they were watching the morning news up until 5 minutes ago, and found themselves unable to switch the broadcast off) will be recording their every move, so they better be on their worst behavior. the joker, unbeknownst to this, is being his usual asshole self, but not even in a fun conniving way, just in the regular asshole way.
at some point, he starts a fight. tensions are already high and hes the fucking joker. just let him dig his own grave here. he starts a fight and his (already shitty, i should add) outfit gets torn. now he has to spend all of his time that should be spent on makeup on fixing the stitching of this dress, and its going awful, and hes been forcibly removed from the makeup/costume making zone so hes just sitting on the stoop outside with a single spool of thread trying to fix this poofy ass dress. soon enough hes got 5 minutes left on the clock and hes still not finished, so hes like fuck it! im just gonna do my makeup and hope for the best. the makeup is atrocious, predictably, he doesnt even get to finish the eyeliner, but he tries to go back inside nonetheless. oops, he got locked out! thank you, tetch. now hes gotta go through the front, all the while trying not to get dirt on this dress which is falling apart on top of him, knowing full well poison ivy and the riddler and the rest of the queens are making fun of him for being late.
he gets back in. by this point, hes sweating like a damn hog, his makeup is running, but hes HERE. he sees amygdala preparing to go down the runway. no no no, the JOKER cant have that. the joker cant have anyone stealing his rightfully earned spotlight. he pushes amygdala out of the way and waits for the go-ahead.
poison ivy and the riddler look confused and disturbed, then whisper to one another for a moment. they turn back toward him.
"didnt we already escort you off the premises like, half an hour ago?" the riddler asks.
"yeah, you weren't supposed to come back," poison ivy says. "that's the point of having henchmen take you out."
they argue about this for a while until joker is thrown out again. the public vote gives him a pitiful 1%.
after that, hes a laughing stock! nobody likes him! hes just the guy who couldnt take a hint even after he was kicked out of a building! he resigns in disgrace and moves to rural ohio where he becomes a gas station attendant. and THAT is how we get rid of the joker.

LE SSERAFIM Chaewon x M & F Reader - “Hardwork Pays Off”
Tumblr media
Heyo and welcome to my NEWWWWWWW one-shot book where you can expect that in these stories of yours, you will be paired with various K-Pop idols! Hope you enjoy reading and please give it a vote and add it to your reading list!
Let's kickoff this book with this story of you along with the leader of LE SSERAFIM and one of the former members of IZ*ONE, Kim Chaewon!
Tumblr media
The urgent meeting for the campus' 40th anniversary of its foundation has just ended. All of the members walked out of the room from their respective sections, which they held as representatives.
Among those who attended the meeting was Kim Chaewon, a freshman student from the first and highest section, where most students that obtained passing and high grades could only get there. She is a very smart woman, which only explains how she was able to be a part of it.
Her rich family background also qualified her to be an auditor of the student council, with the members instantly choosing her to take the position.
But not only that, she is also a figure in other organizations, including the Festivals and Ceremony Committee, which is the one that gathered together to talk about certain issues to be discussed prior to the foundation day of the campus.
This day is well known for everyone to be special and remarkable each year, and as usual, they have to keep the streak that way. That's why, after the class, all the members went to the room and talked to each other about what their plan was to execute everything that revolved around the said celebration.
There were only three who suggested their own ideas: the treasurer, named Miyawaki Sakura, who said that they have to invite the previous administrators and other personnel who worked on the campus before and left their own legacy here, and the chairman of the committee herself, named Nakamura Kazuha, who said that they can move the sports fest into the foundation day so that everyone can be entertained and spend the class-free day more enjoyable.
Lastly, it was Chaewon herself who joined them in sharing what was on her mind. After Kazuha gave her own, she asked for anyone who wanted to take the turn. Chaewon raised her hand afterwards.
"Chaewon, I see you've got something to recommend for us. Go on." Kazuha granted her request to speak.
"Thank you, chairman", Chaewon politely said. She stood up from her seat; now everyone's eyes are on her.
"So for me, I think, what if we arrange a mini-concert or a talent fest in the event?" Chaewon began her suggestion. The rest were revealing their interested looks as they heard it.
"We could invite everyone who wants to perform, whether they could be students, teachers, janitors doing a band, dance performance, cheerleading, anything. We've never done that before. There can also be booths where students can sell products that can be a souvenir for the event or simply foods, beverages, and photographs. And then, when the night comes, I wonder if we could set up some fireworks."
The members were nodding their heads, pursing their lips, or whispering their approval and liking for Chaewon's suggestion. The school rarely does a concert, especially allowing everyone in the school to join, not only students and teachers; that's what Chaewon piqued their interest in.
Without anyone trying to follow up with Chaewon, the chairman then placed the three options into decision-making. The members expressed their insights about the possible advantages and disadvantages it may hold.
"Alright, now that we heard from everyone how they perceive the choices, let's go to the voting procedure, Kazuha said, picking up the whiteboard marker on the table.
"So first, who's in for Sakura's suggestion?"
Out of the 20 members of the committee, only five raised their hands.
Kazuha tallied it on the side of the writing on the board. "Five for Sakura. Next, to my suggestion?"
7 of the committees raised their hands.
"Cmon guys, don't be scared; I won't eat you all alive if you all don't pick me, Kazuha joked, which earned laughter from the members present in the room with her.
"That's all? Five? Are there others who want to catch up?"
Kazuha saw that no one came out for an addition.
"Okay, seven it is." She marked it on the board. "Lastly, to our Chaewon here: Who here approves her plan?"
The rest of the members who didn't vote from the previous two quickly raised their hands in unison. There were eight in total who were in favor of Chaewon's side.
Kazuha counted it noisily and nodded. We've got 8 remaining who haven't voted yet, she labeled Chaewon's name. Oh, it looks like we now know who owns the majority."
"I guess it's safe to conclude that, Chaewon, your idea will be our main plan for the preparation of the foundation day concert. I am also allowing you to join in leading the group since you have the whole idea of what the event should look like, okay?"
Chaewon nodded and smiled at Kazuha's remark. She stood up and bowed to everyone who supported her proposal. "Thank you everyone; let's do well and spread fun on the campus!"
The group clapped their hands for her to express their happiness for their fellow members. As Kazuha ended the meeting, Chaewon received congratulatory messages from her co-members in the hallway.
Returning to her locker, she finally let go of the heavy feeling of anxiety that was putting pressure on her. She appreciated and was happy that her creative and fascinating idea was chosen, but she wondered about the possibility that the students would barely participate or wouldn't view the organization of the event as much as she expected, leaving them disappointed.
In addition, her belief that she is the most underrated and least popular figure in the school government could get her into trouble if the public learns who is behind all of it.
Chaewon sighed and shook her head to remove these thoughts from her head and make her unbothered for at least a while. So far, her main objective has been to execute and finish this new task that she applied for on her own.
The next day, the Festival and Ceremony Committee worked really hard almost the entire day to review Chaewon's event proposal, publicize the event to the higher-ups, prepare everything they'll need for the construction, manage the equipment, and compute the overall cost of how much they'll spend for the event.
Chaewon was glad to witness her idea slowly become a reality. Despite how nervous she is still feeling, the excitement is trying its best to oppose and battle the negativity within her. That's why she is pouring her efforts to their full extent into this event.
The perfect time has finally arrived for the school's annual foundation day commemoration. Luckily, the set is all prepared on the open grounds of the campus. Everyone was walking through and capturing the good luck of the stage where the students who applied to perform with musical instruments are practicing their performance later.
Chaewon is monitoring everything along with Kazuha, who is walking beside her. While she was invested in staring at the stage, thinking about what could happen later when the concert officially starts, she wasn't aware that Kazuha was calling her.
"-won... C-Chaewon!"
"Y-yeah?!" Chaewon exclaimed frantically.
"Are you okay? You seemed to be spaced out." She asked her worriedly.
"I'm good. Sorry, I wasn't able to respond quick." Chaewon sheepishly looked away.
"It's okay." Kazuha smiled. "Are you ready for later, Chae?"
"Yup. I just hope everyone will like what I did for them."
Kazuha patted her friend to the shoulder. "They will, trust me. After all, you're our master strategist and the brightest mind in our council. You rarely commit mistakes, but this won't be one of them."
"I'll head back to the council; you can relax for now. You've done enough, Chae", Kazuha said and smiled before leaving Chaewon alone in the middle of the open grounds.
Chaewon continued to wander around while eating her waffles until a certain person drew her attention when their eyes met.
"Hi Chae!" You greeted her after walking towards at her.
"Hey, YN." Chaewon smiled. What are you doing so far?"
"Ahh, well I'm just talking along with my friends there." you pointed at the guys on the stage. "So basically, I'm just here for nothing. Duties are cleared for now anyway." you shrugged.
"You're right." She nodded. "I see that they'll perform later."
"I encouraged them. That's my way on helping them to promote their newly formed band." you proudly said to her.
"Ooh, supportive friend huh." She smirked.
"Ofcourse I am, especially if they've been like that for me too. If it wasn't for them too, I won't be standing here right now as your fellow committee member who contributed in the production of what we have in here." You said roaming your eyes around while spreading your arms.
"How about you, don't you have anything to do?" You asked her.
"Kazuha lets me to do what I want for now, like you said we are done here so I'm just looking around the place." Chaewon said after biting a piece of her waffle. "But I'm going to the library now. I'm craving for some novels to read."
"Okay then, see you later I guess and have fun on reading." You smiled at her.
Chaewon returned the same nice gesture. "You too."
She was about to walk away and head to her next destination when you called her once again.
"Wait, Chaewon!"
She turned around and hummed in confusion.
"How is that waffle? Is it good? What flavor?" You asked in curiosity as you pointed at the booth distance away from them.
"It's cheese and yeah, it's delicious." Chaewon answered.
"Nice, I'll go buy one. I want to try it too. Thanks!"
You were about to walk away when Chaewon spoke behind you. "Y-you can have mine i-if you want."
Stopping in your steps, you slowly faced Chaewon to see her quite shy as she tightlipped while pushing her hand holding the waffle closer into you.
"You s-sure, Chae? That's your food?"
"I don't mind. I'm not hungry anymore and the library doesn't allow foods anyway... so you can have it. Also, I'm sparing your money to be spent less."
You looked at the bitten waffle, which now has exactly half of its length remaining. "As you say, I mean... I won't try to refuse such a free offer."
Both of you chuckled. You became surprised when Chaewon pushed the waffle even closer to you, including what she said along the way. "Take a bite first, and you'll find out."
Your eyes widened as you stared at Chaewon, cheekily smiling in front of you. Slowly directing your mouth at the food, you opened and bit another piece of waffle as you munched to discover how it tasted.
Chaewon watched you eat patiently, and she listened to the sounds of your hums and groans. "Mmmhmm... wow. Yeah, it's good. I love how they didn't go easy on the cheese and they stuffed it on the waffle that much", you said as you clicked your tongue to depict the taste if left on there.
"Told you. It's yours; grab it. I'll be going now, YN."
She handed you the waffle before she separated from you. You looked at the waffle again and smiled at Chaewon's kindness.
As you returned to your friends, you caught them all staring at you with teasing smiles and reenacting your moment with Chaewon there, making you threaten them in annoyance while being embarrassed at the same time that they caught both of you there as you realized how close you went through Chaewon.
It was 5 p.m. in the afternoon when the concert officially started. Everybody is gathered around the open ground, occupying most of its space as they go on to visit the available stalls, while others are now watching, cheering, and vibing along with the performances brought by the volunteered students, teachers, and other personnel involved in this wonderful event.
The student council partnered with the festival and ceremony committee and the security team to guard and ensure that the event would progress smoothly and establish a safe environment for people to be unharmed.
However, there is only one person who belongs in the group who is absent, and that is Chaewon, who is using her phone after resting from reading her chosen novel for so long.
She is currently hiding herself from them after coming up with the decision not to join them out there and see her idea. Although she has to follow, it wasn't intentional because she has to do this without any other choice.
Her family had already notified her that her driver would pick her up soon because they had to prepare early for their flight early in the morning.
Since it's their semester break afterwards, her parents decided to visit their relatives living in another country for a short vacation.
She couldn't wait and stay here for longer, so she made an excuse in the group chat along with an additional request for them to make sure that everyone in the school should be kept prioritized in the afterparty for the sake of the regulations before she sneakily left the campus.
Despite how sad and unfortunate the situation is for her, what's important to her now is that she showed assistance, and hopefully everyone can acknowledge the amusement she has supplied for them.
As she was walking through the alleyway, she heard the noises of the crowd starting to erupt along with the upbeat music being played by whoever was performing there.
"Everyone's having a blast, Chaewon said, smiling at her observation. "Good for them."
Her phone beeped, and she checked the notification. It was her driver who informed her that he was now close.
While typing her reply message to be sent to her driver, she was too oblivious to sense your incoming presence as you tried to run ahead and catch up to her.
"Chaewon!"
"Y-YN?" She asked astoundingly. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be there."
"Yeah, I know, but I excused myself also," you said between her slightly heavy breathing from sprinting. "Look, I saw your message on the GC. I hope you and your family have a safe flight tomorrow."
"Thanks."
"You did a good job for today's event; me and the rest want to say it personally again, but since earlier, after you went to the library, I couldn't search for you anywhere", you said to her.
"I was actually going to give this to you. Now that I find you, here you go."
You grabbed her hand and opened it on your own, startling her. You placed a small object in her palm. Chaewon looked at it and identified it as a small girl doll above the blooming flowers.
"What's this?"
"It's one of the souvenirs being sold by the students there at the stall earlier. While I was checking there I just found this one cute. I don't know, something brought me to buy it and... give it to you because this somehow reminds me of you."
Chaewon stared at you. She was petrified how she just came across in your mind randomly.
"W-why did you think so?"
"I just found you to be the type of person that wherever you go, you make everything bloom just like you. That's what you're like this doll and we, the people around to you; are the flowers who grows from the sunlight of your happiness."
Chaewon was left speechless by your own definition of her character. She had shivers all over her skin when she felt as if time had just paused after hearing that from you. The only thing that is moving so fast is the heart rapidly beating from your uplifting words.
"And also, I also recorded this from you."
You pulled out your phone from the pocket of your pants. You opened it and showed the screen to Chaewon. To her astonishment, she can view the recorded video of what's happening in the concert right now, where her thoughts were proven wrong.
Everyone was enjoying and loving the event. It all worked right.
"Those were all because of you, Chae. We're happy for your accomplishment of making another yearly foundation day of our campus successful and memorable", you said to her as Chaewon continued to watch the video intently. "When you sent your goodbyes to us, I figured you wouldn't be here with us, so I came up with a way for you to be able to see them still because you deserved it."
Chaewon looked at you and let out a soft smile from her lips. "This is beyond wonderful, YN. I appreciated your thoughtfulness so much. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Chae." You smiled back at her.
She returned her gaze to the phone and watched the remaining time left in the video. She didn't control herself anymore; she presented the biggest grin she ever had so far in front of you.
"Ahh... look at them. They're so cute! So many smiles and laughters around in their faces! I love it, I'm so happy!" She said as she cradled the phone in her hands along with her ecstatic sways while giggling and sighing in relief.
You just watched her be the usual positive version of herself, and if only Chaewon knew how much you loved and were content to see her like this. You hope that this never ends and she never changes because this... This is a gem of a sight for you.
Her smile when she looked at you didn't fail to make you react the same way. It was like you also caused her to brighten her mood more.
Right at the time when the video came to an end, the fireworks popped into the night sky after being launched.
Chaewon and you looked above to gaze and watch the colorful show presented in your eyes.
Chaewon became even happier than ever...and she has you on her side.
You glanced at her side profile, and oh, how breathtaking it is to see her illuminated face sparkling with various bright colors that blend well with the beauty she possesses and that lovely smile she wears.
Again, this has become one of the best days of your life, and you're glad that she was the cause of it.
The fireworks disappeared before the event proceeded inside, with the roaring crowds going crazy again.
You remembered that Chaewon is about to leave now, so you were contemplating escorting her on her way home for safety precautions since it's already nighttime and you don't trust the streets in this state.
Unfortunately, you were prevented from doing so when a car emerged at the end of the hallway. "My driver is now here; bye, YN!"
"Bye, Chaewon." You said with a mix of sincerity and sadness that she had to go without you.
Before she leaves, she gave you one last gift of appreciation for you to cherish when Chaewon quickly hugged you tightly and pressed the side of her head against your chest. "Thank you so much for today; goodnight, and see you again after the semester ends, YN."
"You're welcome, Chae. Have fun on your vacation, you commented as you melted and smiled wider at being in her arms, accepting it by placing yours around her too.
She let go of you and waved her hand at you before she started to walk away further from you.
You remained there to wait for her to reach the car, while Chaewon was all assured that this day had become more than complete and special for her. Not only did she get to share moments alone with the guy/girl she secretly admires, but she was also now confident that all of her hard work had indeed paid off.

Coming Clean - Robert Hicks x Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: SugarDaddy!Hicks x SugarBaby!Reader
Notes: I had high hopes for this type of story then realised that I have no idea how to write it so... We're stuck with this! Sorry
Warnings: SugarDaddy/Baby relationship - I think that's it
Words: 1,250
“Does anyone know what’s up with Hicks?” Rocker questions in the locker room, where a group of officers from 20 and 50 squad are getting ready. Everyone looks around at each other, with someone asking what he means by that. “C'mon! He’s acting different, happier than usual, checking his phone more, and actually wanting to go home when his shift ends.”
“Are you suggesting he’s dating someone?” Alfaro speaks up.
“What else would it be?” The others say that they noticed the changes and that it could be a good reason for them. A smirk appears on Rocker’s face. “Who wants to bet on it? Yes or no, then if you vote yes, you can also vote on whether he’ll bring her as a plus one to Chris and Streets engagement.” Everyone decides to join in; the room split about 60/40 for yes. Rocker collects the money and keeps tabs on who voted what and how much they put in.
You’re standing in Hicks’ bedroom looking at yourself in the full-length mirror, wearing a pretty cocktail dress, glamorous makeup, and your hair in an updo to show off your diamond necklace that he gifted you. He comes up behind you, wrapping an arm around you.
“You look so beautiful." You make eye contact with him through the mirror and thank him. He places a kiss on your temple. “Something’s not right; what’s wrong?” His thumb is softly caressing your waist.
“Nothing, I think I’m just nervous.” You give him a tight-lipped smile.
“I said we don’t have to go. If you’re not up for it, I won’t force you. Say the word, and I’ll send a text telling them that we won’t be attending.” Hicks’ free hand is now mirroring the other one, resting on your waist.
“No. I want to. Honestly, I can’t wait to meet your S.W.A.T. family. I just don’t want this to change their opinion of you. They look up to you; I don’t want to mess that up. I don’t want your personal life choices to affect your work life if someone doesn’t agree with what we have going on.”
“I doubt that anyone is going to say anything, but regardless, at work I’m their commander, and they have no choice but to listen to me. Anyway, I care for you too much to worry about any opinions they might have." He lowers his head, his mouth by your ear. “Alright?” You nod. He kisses your neck, just below your ear.
“I need to apply my lippy, then I’m all set to go." He gives your waist a squeeze before you walk away. You put on your lipstick and grab your clutch, then the engagement gift, before heading out to the car. About 20 minutes later, when you arrive at the venue, you take a few deep breaths. Hicks’ opens the door for you, lending you a hand as you get out of the car. His hand rests on the small of your back as you go inside. You head to the gift table while Hicks’ grabs the two of you a drink.
“Y/N” you hear Luca say as he comes up to give you a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Luca had figured that something was happening with his commander, and he wouldn’t let it go until Hicks told him. He was also told that if he let anyone else know, he’d be stuck in HQ for a month, which was more than enough to guarantee he would keep his mouth shut. When the invitation for the engagement was delivered, Hicks decided to introduce you to Luca so you would already know a friendly face.
“Luca!” You hug him in return. “You clean up well.” He lets out a mix of a scoff and laugh before making a comment about how much he hates it. After asking how you are, Luca starts to point out different S.W.A.T. members, telling you their names and what squad they’re on. Hicks then returns, handing you a glass of wine and greeting Luca. “Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Alfaro finds Rocker. “It looks like pay day for me.” He says with a cocky grin. Rocker raises an eyebrow at the younger man. “Hicks arrived with someone who definitely isn’t a girlfriend.” He nods his head to where you, Luca, and Hicks are standing. “I think I’m going to have a good night, though.” Alfaro says while checking you out. “I’m going to have to thank the boss later.”
“You really want to get involved with someone who’s important to him?”
“You don’t know who she is.” Alfaro quickly counters.
“No, but I do know that you don’t bring a random person to an event like this. She has to be family or a close friend; she already knows Luca; she probably knows Street or Chris.” He shrugs. “It would be a shame to see you on desk duty when she tells Hicks how awful her night was with you.” Rocker jokes with him. Alfaro laughs and gives him the finger as he walks away. He comes over to you.
“Commander, Luca” He shakes their hands. “Great to see you both,” he says, turning to you. “Miguel Alfaro, and you are?”
“Y/N”
“Y/N? Beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” He winks, and you try to hold back a giggle. He thinks it’s because you’re nervous, when in reality it’s the unimpressed look on Hicks’ face.
“Yeah, okay, Romeo. Pack it up.” Luca smacks him on the shoulder, causing you to laugh.
“Whatever” he looks at you again. “I’ll see you around!” He winks before walking back to Rocker. “Don’t say a word,” he says, holding his finger up at Rocker, to which he replies by laughing and holding his hands up.
Throughout the night, you meet all of the people that Hicks works with. No one enquiring what the relationship is between the two of you. At least until a slow song started, Hicks offered you his hand, which you gladly took and followed him to the floor. Only when his hand is on the small of your back a few people start questioning the relationship. Luca watches the two of you with a grin while Alfaro stands with his mouth slightly agape.
“Wait, are they..?” Rocker slaps Alfaro on the shoulder and laughs.
“You tried to flirt with the commanders girl. You’re definitely going to be on desk duty. That’s hilarious!” He’s loving this a little too much, Luca also finding humour in this situation. “It seemed like you knew each other already. What’s their story?” Rocker questions Luca.
“That isn’t my business to tell.”
“Is our boss a sugar daddy?” Alfaro over at Rocker, then at Luca. He just shrugs, then walks over to Street. When the song finishes, Luca comes over and says that Rocker and Alfaro have caught on to your relationship before walking away.
“How long till the news spreads around and everyone knows?” you question Hicks.
“Given that it’s Rocker, not long.”
“Then you should probably just kiss me now to beat him to it.”
“Yeah?” You nod in response, and so he does just that. A sweet kiss against your lips. “Is that better?” You lean in again and kiss him again.
“Much better.” Now that it was going to be public, his hands didn’t leave your body, a hand on your thigh or around your waist at all times. This only makes you needy for him, and it’s evident in how your behaviour changes throughout the rest of the night.

Months have passed since your death.
In those months the children of Bruce Wayne, whether adopted or biological, grieve. All of them mourned you.
There are seldom times your grave is without fresh flowers or some sort of visitor, who either sits in silence or just talks to the headstone in a conversation that they know they’ll never get your input on again.
Your bedroom is in the same state of familiarity, too.
On some days, Alfred has to force Bruce to get out of bed or to even come home.
No one looks at Alfred quite the same anymore, but no one looks at Alfred with the same disgust as Alfred’s own reflection.
✧✿✧
Since the funeral, family dinners went from being twice a week, to just once.
And then they went to once a month, with Alfred having to just watch as the number of people who attended them dwindled, before eventually they came to a total stop.
✧✿✧
Today is another day of distant and silent mourning, as Alfred stands in his room, looking through pictures of you and Bruce as children.
Down the hallway as Alfred looks at a picture of you on your seventh (7th) birthday, he hears Cassandra softly crying down the hall in your bedroom.
During your birthday that year, when you’d turned seven (7) years old, Alfred remembers how the only thing you’d asked for was a cake. Specifically, you requested that he let you help him bake your birthday cake.
Alfred can’t help but smile, even just slightly, as he remembers how big of a mess you’d made when you had attempted to dump the entire bag of flour into the mixing bowl.
He also can’t help but remember that after a long day of celebrating your birthday, it was the first night since you’d come to live with him and Bruce that you hadn’t woken up once because of a nightmare.
✧✿✧
Alfred had been in Bruce’s study when the news came.
A tray of food in hand, he’d been begging Bruce to eat something. Anything, even if it was just a piece of toast that he hadn’t prepared himself.
“Master Bruce, you haven’t eaten in the past few days. Please, take at least one bite.”
Bruce only raises his head, dark circles under his eyes as he just blankly stares at him. An almost soulless look, one that gives a hollow feeling of emptiness.
Across the desk in Bruce’s study are papers, books, various gadgets in states of disrepair or in the middle of being made, as well as schematics for them that have the occasional ring-shaped coffee stain on them.
“Not now, Alfred. I have things to do,” Is Bruce’s only reply, a hoarse and exhausted sounding tone held within his words.
Alfred’s coming words of protest are silenced by the sounds of an alarm going off. Not too loud but neither too quiet, but just enough to make Alfred go silent.
NEW HUNTER DETECTED
That’s what the screen on Bruce’s computer read.
Various screens pop up on Bruce’s computer, each showing feed from different CCTV cameras of a person moving through Gotham and killing vampires in their wake.
The videos in question had been saved from numerous different days in the past few weeks, all adding up together once there was enough saved to trigger the algorithm that Tim had made. Specifically, it was designed to use the cameras around Gotham to track and keep note of Vampire Hunters and vampire attacks. Made solely to help prevent someone else from suffering the same fate you did.
All to prevent them from having to lose someone else.
Bruce and Alfred watch as the videos play, watching as the new hunter the algorithm had detected took out various vampires across the city of Gotham. But what made Bruce rub the drowsiness from his eyes as he leans forward, peering closer at the numerous video feeds was not because of how they looked.
No, it was because of how they moved.
The way they moved was eerily familiar. The way they moved with such precision that only got better and better with each new video feed that grew to be more recent was what had Bruce holding his breath.
While they had kept you from knowing the world of Vampire Hunting most of your life, they hadn’t let you be completely defenseless.
Which was why it was so eerie to see that the way this person was moving, was by using moves he’d only ever taught you. It was unmistakable, really. Bruce had grown up with you, knew most of the little habits you had. He knew you better than he knew himself sometimes.
Bruce is unsure if he wants to let himself grow delusional about whether or not it was who he thought it was. Should he? Could he? Was it even worth the pain it’d bring by opening up old wounds, to bring back the choking hold of grief?
Bruce can feel Alfred staring at him, because he gets that same feeling of familiarity. But it should be impossible. It couldn’t be possible.
But was it? Could it be?
Alfred sets the tray of food down on Bruce’s desk, taking the opportunity to clean up some of its disorganized mess. But it’s only because he doesn’t want to let his mind wander like Bruce’s is. He already lets it wander far enough when he looks through photo albums and when he sees his face reflected off the tea he drinks in the morning, in the mirror, off the windows, and on the screen of Bruce’s computer.
Bruce doesn’t even acknowledge the tray of food Alfred leaves on his desk, only getting up after receiving a notification on the screen that the new hunter was spotted again. Bruce already felt the idea of who it could be creeping into his mind and clinging there, leaving him wondering. Wanting to know. Needing to know, to get his question answered.
“I’ll be out for a while.”
“Will I expect you back for dinner today, Master Bruce?”
Alfred is only met with silence as Bruce grabs what he needs and heads out the door. Which gives him his answer.
“At least come back unscathed, Master Bruce. I don’t think they want you to join them just yet.”
“Don’t act like you know what they would’ve wanted, Alfred.”
Alfred goes quiet again. He understands, after all. He knows Bruce is still hurting, just like the others are. Alfred was the last person to see you alive, and was the only one there when you drew your last breath. They resent him for that.
But they also can’t look at him the same after knowing that it was because of him that you drew in that last gasp of air, held in his arms in that cold, dirty alley whilst the sun rose in the distance.
What makes it worse was just how often you used to like watching the sun rise. It was often when the others finally returned from their patrols, having spent all night hunting down vampires to make Gotham even just a little safer.
And every time, you’d be there, waiting for them. You’d welcome them home, tend to their injuries, and if they had a particularly rough night you’d even make them something, though it was usually some sort of baked dessert, like cake or cookies. And even though Bruce had a disdain for anything overly sweet, he’d still eat whatever cake you’d baked for him, even if it was so sweet it made him feel nauseous.
But no matter how much of a disdain Bruce had for sweet foods in general, he never could quite turn them down when you made them. You always had a smile with comforting words to follow, all to mask just how truly worried about him you were. Bruce knew that you always wanted, deep down, for him to stop being a vampire hunter. But you knew he couldn’t nor wouldn’t stop, so you always kept quiet about it.
If you weren’t so worried, if Bruce did anything to ease your worries, would you have let him know that you wanted to be walked home that night? He’d seen the unsent text message. Tim showed it to him. It’d been easy for Tim to find, with how unprotected your phone was from hackers and the like. You had deleted the message, and Bruce knew why.
It was because you felt guilty about even thinking of asking for his help. You knew how busy he was saving Gotham from vampires, which meant you could never work up the courage to ask him. He’d already helped you so many times before, and you barely could do anything to help him. Would things be different, Bruce thinks, if he’d texted you to make sure you got home safe instead of focusing on his patrol? Would you still be here, alive and well? Would you be here, saying goodbye to him as he heads out, telling him to stay safe?
Bruce forces the thoughts to shake free from his head as he swiftly departs, not allowing himself to turn around, knowing only that his heart would ache when he doesn’t see you there waiting for him. It’s always hurt, because the first few days he’d always mistakenly hear you calling out for him, sometimes even thinks he’d see you in the corner of his eye.
But whenever he’d turn and look, you weren’t there, and Bruce remembers.
✧✿✧
It takes a few minutes for Bruce to track down the new vampire hunter who’d somehow been able to avoid making Tim’s detection system go off, as it should have alerted Bruce to their presence months ago. The night is cold since autumn is right around the corner, and it reminds Bruce of just how cold that night was when you’d been brought to Wayne manor.
Bruce reminds himself to focus as he follows the new vampire hunter, who moves through Gotham as if they know the place by heart. Which almost seems odd to know every part of Gotham, when they’d only been detected less than six months ago. It’s odd, because the system has only had a record of their existence from that time frame. The program couldn’t even pick up data from normal Gotham citizens from before that to link it back to them.
It was odd.
So, so incredibly odd. Almost an off-putting, eerie kind. The type you get when you walk down the street at night and suddenly don’t feel alone, like you shouldn’t be there.
Bruce has this odd, eerie feeling for almost fifteen minutes before he realizes. The world’s greatest detective, they say, and it took him fifteen minutes of following this new vampire hunter to realize they were leading him in a circle. That they knew they were being followed.
When Bruce realizes he’s been following the new vampire hunter blindly for fifteen minutes in that same circle, the vampire hunter seems to know, too.
“Took you long enough to notice, Batman. You're getting awfully slow.”
Why does that voice sound so familiar?
Why does Bruce feel like he’s heard it somewhere before? And why is the familiarity hurting him?
Bruce leaps down from the rooftop he rests upon, landing on the street beside them. That feeling that screams in Bruce’s head that he knows who this vampire hunter is, who they are underneath the mask, is hideously strong. Almost sickeningly so.
But who is it?
Bruce narrowly avoids the punch the vampire hunter has swinging his way when he snaps out of his thoughts. Getting distracted and in a daze when confronting someone isn’t smart, he knows that. He taught Dick and Jason never to lose focus in a fight.
But yet here he is, losing focus.
Jason would probably find it ironic if he were here right now.
“Focus, Batman. Isn’t that what you taught those boys of yours?”
Behind Bruce’s mask, his face is scrunched up in confusion. Contorted as he continues to try and avoid getting hit, because he hates just how easy it is for him to lose focus because of just one thought.
But yet, even despite how familiar these moves are- which are the only reasons he’s able to avoid them even at the last possible moment- there’s something that bothers him, something that he realizes. The vampire hunter who is fighting him, attacking him, isn’t doing it with the purpose most others would.
It’s almost like it’s some sort of warning, as they change the trajectory of their moves to only hit the most non-vital points. Areas where it won’t do anything but leave a nasty bruise.
Which is odd, considering Bruce now realizes after a particular glint in the fluorescent lighting of the street lights that line the roads of Gotham, when the mask of the vampire hunter before him slips just enough when Bruce finally strikes back is that there are fangs.
Fangs.
The vampire hunter right in front of Bruce, the one that has managed to evade program that Tim spent weeks coding, the same vampire hunter that is refusing to strike Bruce anywhere vital as if some sign of guilt, is a vampire.
A vampire, hunting down and killing other vampires. Killing them. In a most brutal fashion, too, based on what Bruce and Alfred saw in the collected video files.
Why is a vampire, a creature that exists to attack and feed off of humans, trying to avoid hurting him?
Why?
Bruce can’t make sense of it. He can’t. There is virtually no reason for any vampire in Gotham, in the entirety of this world, that they would be trying to not hurt him.
Most vampires attempt to kill him on sight. So why isn’t this one? Why is it acting so… odd?
Bruce twists around the outstretched, reaching arm of the vampire hunter as they move in a pattern that Bruce is quickly learning. They never differ or change the pattern, no matter how often Bruce is able to evade their attacks. And with that open window of opportunity, he takes the chance to collect a sample of their DNA.
Some blood, to be specific.
The vampire… hunter lets out some sort of noise of pain. Not quite a shriek, nor a yelp, but just a noise. And just as soon as they started attacking Bruce, they are trying to flee.
And before Bruce can attempt to stop them, they are gone.
But that’s fine, because Bruce has what he came for. A blood sample.
Enough for Bruce to test, to compare to others in the database to see who they are.
Because that is the question lingering on his mind. Who is it? Just who is this new vampire hunter that has been able to leave a growing pile of bodies in their wake in just mere months?
✧✿✧
Bruce doesn’t waste a moment, ignoring Alfred’s pleas to let him look over and treat his injuries, as minor as they are. Just a few bruises that will heal.
He doesn’t waste a moment in immediately getting to work on finding out who that vampire is. Who the vampire hunting down and killing other vampires is, who they are underneath that mask.
After loading the sample into the batcomputer, he waits. Sitting there with so much impatience, so eager to find out who it is. It’s almost suffocating just how badly he wants it to just finish already, to just show him the results.
Alfred takes the opportunity, though, to place another tray full of food in front of Bruce. Because it’s now been a few days since Bruce last ate, and the only thing he’s done is keep himself hydrated.
Bruce attempts to protest, but he relents at the painful gnawing in his stomach. No longer able to keep himself sufficiently distracted to not notice just how hungry he is. But all he does is take small, slow bites, watching the progress the batcomputer is making on the sample.
He eats so slowly that by the time the sample is eighty [80] percent analyzed, the food has grown cold. So cold that it makes Bruce not want to eat anymore, even if he’s barely even touched any of the food. But Alfred is happy anyway, because he’s happy that Bruce has something in his stomach.
Even if it’s not a whole lot.
✧✿✧
When Bruce saw the results, his mouth went dry. His chest felt like an unrelenting void, filled with a crashing tidal wave. The creeping feeling that fills him is just as terrifying.
Alfred had to practically pry Bruce away from the batcomputer, as he mumbles nothing but words about how the results had to be wrong.
How there was no possible way that the blood sample belonged to and came from just who the batcomputer said it did.
So now here everyone was, called here by Alfred. Stated to be an absolute and utter emergency, and that excuses would not be tolerated. It was absolutely mandatory, and emergencies were to be ignored because this was the emergency.
Jason didn’t want to be here. Dick didn’t want to be here.
None of them wanted to be here. Not in the same home they’d ‘grown up’ in, that now held nothing but bitter reminders of a certain death. The death of someone they viewed as a child, a sibling, a parent. A role model.
You. Your death.
But yet here they are. Unable to avoid it, because it was an order. An order that it was an emergency, and no one could turn away when someone raises the alarm about something being an emergency.
When everyone arrives, Bruce is already seated in his office. He almost seems emotionless, like there isn’t even an ounce of life behind his eyes as he simply stares ahead, blankly.
He doesn’t even react when they all close the door behind themselves, his eyes only moving up once Dick stands in front of him.
“Why were we called here, Bruce?”
Dick’s voice sounds tired. But that’s because he is tired. He’s so, so tired of grieving. Of mourning you. Of feeling like that total and utter failure that he knows he is because he got lazy on one stupid patrol.
He’s tired of feeling like this. Feeling like he’s stuck in a deep pit of sadness and guilt, sadness because you died. Guilt because you died when he wasn’t looking hard enough. But yet, there’s also anger.
Anger at himself.
But Bruce doesn’t have the energy to answer Dick’s question, so Alfred does the talking. He shows the videos, also shows Bruce’s encounter with the vampire hunter. Everyone doesn’t quite understand just why there was an emergency meeting being called over a vampire hunter. Sure, it was alarming they were a vampire but that wasn’t cause for an emergency.
That is, until Alfred shows the results from the batcomputer. Results of who the DNA belongs to.
And while some seem surprised, some in a state of utter shock, others just feel.. Numb. Like there was nothing they could feel besides the ever consuming pit of nothingness in their chest.
But everyone is in disbelief, just as Bruce was. Is, more like.
The results showed a one-hundred [100] percent match for the last person they expected. The last person they even wanted to believe it could be.
You.
You, who was supposed to be dead. Buried six [6] feet under the ground in the cemetery on the grounds of the Wayne manor.
Dick wants to feel sick. Jason, too. Damian feels his stomach lurching as well, but he doesn’t let it show. He refuses to.
They all don’t want to believe the results are true, just as Bruce did. Because it should be simply impossible, right? They all made sure you were dead before burying you.
“But that’s impossible. We made sure. Alfred-... He…” The words choke and die in Tim’s throat. But everyone knows what he means. How could they not?
Alfred made sure, because he was the one who dealt the killing blow.
Those are the words that go unspoken. The truth, as disgusting and heavy as it is.
But is it the truth? Did Alfred actually deal the killing blow?
And the truth is, they hadn’t double checked. So lost in their grief over your bloody body that Alfred brought back to the manor they hadn’t even bothered to check and make sure that Alfred had actually shot you in the heart.
They had just assumed he had.
“Alfred… You.. You checked, right?”
Dick’s voice is shaky, as ragged and rushed as his breathing. He feels like he already knows the answer, but god does he want to be wrong.
But the way Alfred clenches his jaw and his eyes focus on that abandoned tray of food from much earlier, food long since grown cold, gives Dick his answer.
“Bruce? You checked, right?”
Tim is the one to ask this time. Because surely, there is no way that Bruce didn’t check and confirm for himself. He’s thorough, he always is. There isn’t any realm of possibility that Bruce didn’t check… Right?
Right?
When Bruce doesn’t answer, there’s a look of disbelief on just about everyone's faces. Bruce Wayne, the ever thorough and the world’s ‘greatest detective’, renowned vampire hunter Batman, didn’t double check that you were dead?
“You checked, right?”
“No. I didn’t.”
And now everyone is left with the horrifying, dawning realization of just one thing. A simple thought that is horrifying to picture, to imagine. To even now be known as a reality.
They’d practically buried you alive.
Everyone quickly dispersed after that. No one could stand to be in the same room as each other, because even though they know they rightfully have no right to blame one another, even though they could blame themselves, it’s all they think about.
You were alive. Alive.
All this time you’d been alive while they mourned you. While Dick blamed himself, while Damian blamed Dick for the reason you were no longer present.
Damian feels sick to his stomach at just how angry he was at Dick in the past. Of the things he’d said to him, blaming him for your death. When you weren’t even dead.
Jason can feel nauseating guilt creeping in his chest, too. Ripping open a swallowing, fathomless pit. He’d screamed at Alfred. Been angry with him, caused him so much pain. Alfred hadn’t even killed you, and he’d been so angry at Alfred.
But the sudden appearance of the vampire hunter is making sense. It coincides with your death, somewhat. With the recovery period a vampire would need to recover from a wound like the one you’d taken.
But it makes so, so much sense.
✧✿✧
Six months ago is when Cass was out tracking a vampire. Well, more-so a large nest of them. One that held connections in various cities, dangerous and leaving an endless, bloody wake of victims.
Perhaps it was because of the grief clouding her mind, that thought of how this group could be the ones responsible. The one responsible for your death.
So she got sloppy. Just a little bit. Enough to make a small error that she normally wouldn’t make.
Cass hadn’t taken the time she usually did to make sure she was sure of just how many vampires actually lived in that nest before she charged into it to take out the vampires that resided there. The information hadn’t been totally accurate, it’d missed a few vampires. So she’d been quickly overrun, out of supplies with not even enough bullets to last her.
But just as Cass thinks she’s going to die for her margin of error, as she decides to resign to her fate because hey, it means she’ll get to see you again, the vampires that are about to kill her are dead.
And there’s a figure standing over their bloody remains that seems oddly familiar to Cass. But she can’t quite place it. At least, she couldn’t then.
“I thought you were taught better than this. This is a stupid mistake, even for you.”
Before Cass can ask the obvious question that’s scratching at the back of her mind, the figure is gone just as quick as they appeared. Leaving nothing evident of their presence, besides the dead vampires.
✧✿✧
They’d all been in some sort of predicament caused by their overwhelming grief that meant they’d needed someone to save their ass. And you had. You’d been there to rescue them from their mistakes every single time.
You’d saved Cass from death, been there to save Jason during the few times he’d been distracted [even if all he’d glimpsed of you was your retreating silhouette], and so much more.
But why had you never shown yourself to them? Why had you let them wallow in their own self pity and grief over your death, when you hadn’t even died?
Perhaps there was an answer to this question they didn’t yet have.
But it was no matter. They had time to get the answer they so desperately wanted. They had a means to find you the next time you appeared, all they had to do was wait.
✧✿✧
And wait they did.
It took almost a week before you appeared again, presumably to lay low for a while after that encounter with Bruce. As if it would stop them from figuring out the truth.
They’d even checked your grave. And god, were they horrified to find that it was empty, just as they’d feared.
But yes, when you’d appeared again after lying low for a week, Jason was the one sent to go talk to you. You’d always had a soft spot for him, after all.
So in his Red Hood gear, he approaches you. He wasn’t even sure if he should be surprised that you seemed to know he was there the moment he’d landed on that same rooftop as you.
But maybe he should, since he knows neither Bruce nor Alfred gave you any training to be a vampire hunter. They wanted you to stay as far away as possible from it, after all.
But perhaps that distance is why you’d never stood a chance the night you’d been attacked. Maybe it was the lack of making sure you were prepared to face the threats that lie in the very shadows they hunted in.
Jason sees your moments from fleeing from the way you visibly tense up and flinch when he steps closer to you, so he stops. He entirely freezes, because the last thing he wants is for you to disappear again.
“We know it’s you,” Is all Jason calls out, paired with your name instead of the nickname he’d always refer to you by. A parental nickname, something similar to the way children call their parents Mom or Dad, but entirely different and unique to you.
Jason watches the way you seem to think, still frozen in a stance that says you're seconds from fleeing, that him making the wrong choice is all it takes for you to disappear. But this time it’d be Jason’s fault that you're gone, not Dick’s.
“We aren’t mad, I promise.”
Bad thing to start off with, Jason. Now you’ll think they all were mad.
“What I meant to say is… We all miss you. When you died- thought you died, we didn’t know what to do.”
Jason is practically grasping at straws. He can see his words aren’t reaching you in the way he is hoping, wanting them to. He’s never been good at the comforting stuff, never been good at talking someone down. Not like Alfred is, not like Dick is. Not like Barbara, too.
What would they even say to you?
Jason feels lost, because just why did they send him to talk to you, instead of anyone else?
Well, not sending Alfred is understandable. He’d been the one to shoot you, and Jason knows that he wouldn’t want to see the Joker again, to be the one to talk to him. But what about Dick and Barbara? What would they do?
Jason doesn’t even know if attempting to continue to comfort you is worth it, especially not when it doesn’t even seem to be working.
“Why?”
Those words slip past Jason before he can even get a chance to stop himself. But it’s a question he really, really wants an answer to. Well, not just want. He needs to know. He needs to know why you’ve let them all sit and rot inside their grief and despair, even as understandable as it may be for Alfred because even he understands that seeing the person who killed you is not easy.
Well, not that Alfred even killed you. Almost killed you, which Jason understands. The Joker had almost killed him then, too. Instead he’d lived because some weird ‘miracle’ left him being some freak of nature, a half human but not entirely vampiric person.
Like some curse.
“I was supposed to be dead.”
“I get that.”
“Plus.. I’m a vampire, Jason. I’m a danger to you guys. What if.. What if I lose control? Like I did that night?”
He knows what you're talking about. The night you’d attacked Bruce before… Alfred shot you. Jason remembers hearing about it from a very heartbroken Bruce, although the heartbreak wasn’t easy to see on the surface. But Jason had known. So had everyone else.
After all, they’d all been pretty much trained and raised by Bruce. They knew what he was feeling- most of the time. Though they couldn’t see it as easy as Alfred did.
“We could’ve found ways around it that didn’t mean you totally avoided us,” Jason says those last words with more bitterness than he should’ve. He knows he has no right to be angry, doesn’t even deserve to be. But he can’t help it, not with how he can only rethink on just how he’d treated Alfred because of it.
“Because of that we treated Alfred-” He cuts himself off, not wanting to spew those words out. Doesn’t even want them to fall past his lips. But it’s far too late, judging by the way your eyes narrow and your head practically snaps toward him.
“What did you all do?”
The venom in your voice when you hear those words is unmistakable. Sure, you wouldn’t be able to look at Alfred the same because he’d been the one to shoot you, but you still understood why he had.
You were a vampire. Something dangerous, and he was doing what needed to be done.
Before Jason can even try to backpedal he’s already spewing to you how everyone’s treated Alfred since you’d ‘died’. Everything. Including how he’d screamed at Alfred after hearing what your last words were from him, down to him destroying his room, Bruce’s new attitude, everything.
“Why would you all do that?” You’d hissed almost immediately after he’d finished telling that tale. Disbelief is just about the only thing you feel, along with those other bitter emotions you were currently feeling.
“He killed- we thought he’d killed you, and we just.. We were angry! Because he took you away from us!”
When had you even marched over to him? Was it while he was speaking those venomous words about how Alfred had killed you, taken you from them? Or was it sooner?
Was he blinded by his own emotions to even notice?
Nevertheless, you're pretty much right in his face, and while Jason is expecting you to scream at him, maybe even yell, raise your voice somewhat, you don’t. Perhaps it’s worse that you sound calm.
“Alfred did what he needed to, what he had to.”
“But you were our family!”
“I do not deserve special treatment because I helped raise you all. Not because I was the person Bruce viewed as a little sibling, and the person Alfred viewed as his own child.”
“But-”
You silence him by raising a hand up, your eyes squeezed shut in the way it does when you’d had headaches in the past, pinching the bridge of your nose between your index finger and thumb.
“Tell me, Jason, would any of you have been able to do it then, hmm? Do you know how hard it was for Alfred to even point the gun at me without his hands shaking? Without crying? Would either of you have been able to pull the trigger instead of Alfred?”
Jason stays silent, and when you open your eyes to glare at him, demanding an answer like those times you’d interrogated him after he’d been stupid and nearly gotten himself killed on those patrols back when he was younger, back when he was just Robin and training under Bruce’s watch.
And he only shakes his head.
“But I promise I’ll be back.. Someday, I don’t know when. Don’t know if it’ll be soon, or if it’s not for years ahead. But I can promise that, okay?”
You really didn’t know just what else to say, honestly. You already had plans for what your coming moves were, for your motives. You knew Jason was wondering that just by glancing at him, even if you couldn’t see his face behind his helmet.
“And if you want, you can try to help me, if it’ll make you.. I don’t freaking know, feel better, I guess?”
“How?”
“You’ll see. It’ll be an answer to my motives and why I’ve been so secretive I guess. I’ll tell you how you can help me later.”
Jason wants to say something, but he doesn’t know if he should even be surprised you already know what it is he wants to say. “Oh, and don’t tell anyone I’m letting you help me. That part stays a secret, got it?”
Jason only nods in reply, and with that, you’ve disappeared from Jason’s sight, leaving him alone on that rooftop to think through his thoughts. And of your words, of course. To muddle them over, to debate whether or not he even accepts the notion of helping you.
With keeping it secret being the price he pays.

Online Dating Can Be Hard 15
Spicy week this week! I have a couple more chapters I'm gonna try to get out this week! Enjoy. And as always with my work there is some strong language used.
----------
I let out a long sigh as I stood from my seat by the gate. I guess now was as good of a time as any to conduct preflight. I showed the gate agent my badge and within seconds I was running through the usual checklist with my first officer.
“Good afternoon!” A cheery little voice spoke from well below me. I looked down to find a parvus flight attendant. This was a mixed flight so her presence didn’t surprise me.
“Afternoon!” I replied warmly. “How are you doing?”
“I’m doing good! Beautiful day to go flying! I’ve also never been to the cities so I’m excited to finally see them!” she exclaimed. She was a cute little thing. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a professional bun. Every inch of her uniform seemed to be well put together as did she.
“Well, I’m happy to welcome you to the cities then! When we get there I mean.” I said with a smile. “I’m Kate by the way.”
“Sara!” She tossed back.
She was a very quizzical woman. During the flight when there were lulls, she would come and chat with me in the cockpit. She wasn’t really supposed to do this but it didn’t bother the first officer or I so we let her stay for a couple of minutes before she would return to her passengers.
She asked about the parvus scene in the cities and I told her about my parvus friends. I didn’t know I had talked mainly about Cam till Sara let out a little chuckle and asked, “Are you two dating?”
My face immediately turned a deep red as I looked away. Images of Cam in his tux flooded back into my mind. The way he looked at me. The look in his eye. Was it desire?
“Nah. We are just friends.” I said hoping to not give my real feelings away.
“So this Cam character is single?” she asked haphazardly.
I nodded. “Yep. How he is still baffles me too.” I said with a laugh.
“Do you know what he is up to tonight by chance? I would love to meet up with some local parvuses.” She said with a smile.
“Well Cam, Sal and Marcy are coming over to my place for game night tonight. It’s not the downtown scene you are looking for but you are more than welcome to join if you would like.” I said trying to be nice. Deep down, though, I hoped she would pass on the offer and just go downtown.
My heart tightened as she said sweetly, “I would love to join you!”
Well duck. How bad can it be? She seems nice. Maybe it will be fun with her around tonight I tried to tell myself.
---------
Tonight was game night at Kate’s place and I was excited! I had my master plan already. We would have a great night playing games. Everyone would go home and I would be left with Kate. She would walk me home like usual. I would confess my love to her under the streetlights. It was going to be perfect!
I was basically buzzing as I walked up the stairs to her apartment. Cresting the top I rang the doorbell as usual and waited for my blue eyed beauty to answer. Like clockwork the door opened to reveal Kate. She immediately took a knee and we went through our usual dance of her saying hello and grabbing my jacket before offering me a beer which I always said yes to. Lilith then greeted me in her little wiggle butt way.
The dance was thrown off, though, when a parvus woman I did not know rounded the corner and beelined for me. She wore skin-tight jeans and a crop top that showed off her nice form. “You must be Cam!” She exclaimed as she came up and gave me a big hug which threw me off. She was shorter than me by a couple of millimeters. Definitely be someone mom would love for me I mentally chuckled as I tried to cope with the odd situation.
“Ugh… Hi. Do I know you?” the confusion plain as day in my voice. I didn’t know whether to hug her back or not so I voted for not.
“Oh I should probably introduce myself. I’m Sara. I have heard so much about you and I’m really excited to meet you! Kate and I flew together today and she told me all about you and invited me over!” Sara’s voice was bubbly as ever.
Kate was talking about me at work today?! My heart fluttered at the thought. A weird feeling struck me, though. Why did Kate invite Sara though? And why was Sara so excited to see me?
“Well looks like you two met already.” Kate’s voice from behind pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to see her take a knee not too far away. She handed me my beer with a warm smile.
“Yes Ma’am!” Sara was practically giddy. She then covered her mouth with the back of her hand to try to block her words as she said, “And he is way more handsome in person. Your words do him no justice.” She added a wink at the end for a touch.
“That he is.” Kate chuckled before smiling down at me.
I was so confused what was going on, but couldn’t dwell much on it as Sal and Marcy started to yell at us to hurry up. Kate gave both Sara and I a ride to the table where Sara proceeded to sit way too close to me all night. As the night went on Sara tried harder and harder to make more advances. I tried my hardest to be nice because I didn’t want to seem rude to a parvus that Kate invited over.
As the night progressed though, my irritation rose. Kate was just letting this woman do all of this to me and didn’t once try to stop her. Was this not eating Kate up like it was me? Did Kate not care about me the way I cared for her? Is Kate trying to set me up with this girl or something? Is that why she invited her over and told her all about me beforehand…
I shoved down the hurt and tried to put on a happy face. I didn’t want to be the one to ruin game night. After everyone had their fill of games and decided it was best to go home, I found myself alone with Kate and Sara. Kate had been quiet all night and barely interacted with me at all. Sara dragged me to the door and half asked half demanded I walk her back to her hotel room because she ‘didn’t know the city well and needed a strong man to protect her.’ My mom would have killed me if I told a tipsy woman I would not walk her home, so I said yes.
Kate said nothing as she stood on. Kate had never seemed so distant as she did towering feet above my tiny form. Did she really not care at all? Was she really ok with me walking another woman home? A woman that was flirting with me all night. A woman who for sure wanted to sleep with me. I wanted her to say something as she handed me my jacket, but all I got was an emotionally disconnected, “Please be safe on your way home.”
That was it. The straw that broke the camel’s back and split my heart in two. Kate didn’t care about me. Not in the same way I cared about her. How stupid I was to think someone like Kate, a human, could ever love me. She was just trying to set me up this whole time. To get me out of her hair. She probably knew I had feelings and tried to deflect them onto someone else. That’s why she invited Sara over. That’s why she told Sara all about me. That’s why she let Sara flirt with me all night. I really was pathetic for thinking Kate and I could have been something more than friends.
--------------------------
I had a feeling Sara might be trouble from the start, but never imagined it was going to be that bad. Watching her all over Cam crushed me. I just wanted to pick her up and toss her out the window. From the very start she was hiding in the shadows, waiting to ambush Cam. And I could do nothing but stand by and watch as she worked her magic on him.
Cam never pushed her away. Even as her advances grew more bold he just let it happen. If I would have known it was going to be this bad I would have worn a mouth guard to protect my poor teeth from all the grinding. I wanted to be that crazy human who kicked her out without hesitation. But that would have been terrifying for everyone. A colossal crazy picking up a parvus and tossing her into the street because she was flirting with the parvus I was in love with… Definitely not ok…
What made it wall worse was I think Cam liked her back. Again, he never seemed to push her away. He even said yes when she asked if he would walk her home… Maybe I am crazy. Maybe this whole time while I thought Cam liked me, he actually was waiting for his small and cute parvus woman to come along. I was just a place holder until someone more acceptable came into his life. Who was I kidding… Cam was a parvus and I was a human. No parvus wanted a human looming over them. Especially not a fine parvus like Cam.
I wanted to slam my head into a wall for being such a fool. For thinking we could have been more than friends. Now I questioned if we could even continue being friends…

The Bangtan Gal Chapter 27- KCON 2014
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: BTS attend KCON for the first time. Jennie meets G-Dragon. Someone makes a surprise visit for Jennie
Words: 5,000+
-----
'Los Angeles, California'
Standing in front of their van, they applauded in front of the cameras, eager to what was to come for K-Con. Jennie wore jean shorts, Nikes and a Spongebob shirt. She also wore a black snapback over her head.
"Where do you guys want to go?" Suga asked. "I wore a Mickey Mouse hat because I want to go to Disneyland!"
"Go to Disney World, in Florida!" Jennie suggested. "We should all go, one day."
"We just changed, why don't we go to the beach?" Rapmon mentioned. "I didn't get first place last time nor go to the beach!" He whined.
"Breathe!" Jen shouted as she started shaking him, to calm him down.
"We need to go to the beach!" Jimin declared.
Raising his hand, J-Hope spoke, "Let's go shopping!"
"Yeah! Shopping!" Jin agreed
"What? Shopping? I'm in." Rapmon laughed
"Beach!" Jen said in a loud voice. "B.E.A.C.H!"
"I guess we are going to the beach since the majority of the members want to go to the beach."
Suga shrugged. "For the members who couldn't go last time." He placed a hand on Jimin's shoulder.
"I like the beach, too." Jungkook added
"Beaches in Los Angeles are very famous."
"We can go for Rap Monster and Jimin."
"Shopping is so tempting, too."
After bickering, they headed into the bus. Jennie laughed at J-Hope's excessive screaming along with V and Suga. The rest of the members just stare.
"They're out of their minds." Jin declared.
"I should have voted for shopping." Rapmon chuckled to himself.
Watching the guys bicker about the beaches in Busan, they turn to her and ask her about the beaches in America. "Depends on where you go. You'd have to see it in person." She answered. When they received a poster with their faces on it, Jen snickered at her photo as they started the ladder game. "Is my head really that big?"
'What is the ladder game?'
'After a member draws a random line to connect the columns, follow the path to see which team member will be placed in it.'
"These are old pic of us." Jungkook pointed out
"My hair looks a hot mess in this picture, ugh." Jen cringed at how her curls were all over the place.
"Aw! Ennie's hair!" V cooed.
"Please stop." She groaned.
"You look like you're going to kill someone." Jimin pointed to J-Hope, looking at his photo with the mask.
"These are our debut album pictures." Jin asserted.
"These are from more than a year ago," Suga added.
"Can we not look at these pictures again, please?" Rap Monster asked.
'What is the image game?'
'Point to the member that best fits the answer to the question. Who is the most popular member to fans?'
"Who's the most childish?" Suga read the card. "Three, two, one!"
Jennie pointed to Jin while the rest pointed at each other. "Why me? Why?" Jin looked around, over the loud shouts of his name.
"We all picked Jin!" Suga cheered.
"There is a reason for it." Jin tried to explain. "I'm 23 years old and our youngest member is 16 in America. I'm trying so hard to get along with you guys."
"Is that why you buy Mario toys?" Rapmon threw him under the bus.
"Even adults like Mario!"
"Many adults collect toys as a hobby." Suga bluntly agreed. "Next, which member is the trickster?"
"We don't even have to think about this one." V laughed as everyone pointed to Suga.
"I still feel like you're gonna draw on my face again." Jennie let out a sigh. Suga chuckled to himself, considering her words. "Don't get any big ideas!"
"No promises. Who's the best duo in BTS?" Suga read the card and everyone pointed to Jimin and V. "The 1995 duo."
"Please stop picking on each other!" Rapmon exclaimed while Jimin and V bickered back and forth saying what
"Who is the most beautiful member?"
Not thinking much of it, Jen pointed to Jin while the rest of the members pointed to her.
Jin pointed to himself but widened his eyes in surprise at the result. "Wha!? Not me? I'm the princess!" He sputtered.
"Miss Bangtan is the most beautiful. End of discussion!" Jimin shouted.
"I'm offended." Jin huffed
After playing, Suga won the game with three picks and he drew the lines on the board. Team A consisted of J-Hope, Rapmon, Suga and Jungkook. Team B currently consisted of V and Jimin. And once Suga put Jennie on Team B, Jimin and V started cheering enthusiastically.
Jungkook looked at the board, to see what the fuss was about and yelled, "NO!"
"YES~" V cheered.
"This can't be right!"
"IT IS~"
"AHAHAHAH! WE HAVE JENNIE! IN YOUR FACE!" Jimin shouted and held her hand, giving it a few kisses. "Thank you, Jennie. Thank you. We will win for sure!"
"You're welcome?" She let out a soft laugh.
"We're going to win~" V cheered, high fiving Jimin and Jin.
"I will be the leader of Team B." Jimin suggested.
Jungkook swiped her hat over her head and put it on his head instead, while she tried to get it back, failing every attempt. "We have the main vocal and the rappers." Rap Monster confidently spoke.
"They have the leftovers."
"UM! Who you calling a leftover? We're winning this, so that smile won't be on your face for long." Jennie called him out.
"We'll see, missy."
Arriving at the beach, they announced the three missions.
'Mission #1: Take a picture with someone holding a camera'
'Mission #2: Take a picture with someone holding a surfboard'
'Mission #3: Teach someone the Bangtan Chant'
"I'm so happy Ennie is on our team. We can easily communicate." V sighed out of relief.
"Oh yeah? Well, we have Rapmon!" Jungkook shouted in annoyance.
"Don't rely on me!" Rap Monster let out a whine.
'First team to successfully complete all three missions will be deemed the prize winning victor!'
Walking outside, Jennie looked around to find two teen boys with a surfboard. "Over there!" She pointed while her team ran past her to approach them
"Can I take a picture with you?" Jin asked in English.
"Hey! Can we take a picture with you?" Jennie added on, meeting up with them.
"Yeah, go for it." The boy shrugged while Jimin held the camera.
"Should we flex?" The second boy asked, trying to show off his muscles.
"One! Two! Three!" Jimin took the photo.
"Thank you!" Jin politely said in English.
They hug them and cheer before running off to the next mission. Rushing past Team A, Jennie decided to swipe her snapback off Jungkook's head, earning a loud "Yah!" in response as she ran off ahead.
Turning around, she stuck her tongue out and ran along with her team, ignoring his shouts.
"Can we do the chant first?" Jimin asked
"We might as well!" Jennie answered and approached a group of girls. "Hi, do you mind chanting with us?"
"Chanting?" One of the girls questioned.
"We need to say, 'Bangtan, Bangtan! And you have to say Bang Bangtan! Think you can do that for us?"
"And take picture," Jin added. "One, two! Bangtan, Bangtan, Bang Bangtan and picture, click!"
Jimin set up the camera. Team B shouted, "Bangtan Bangtan, Bang Bangtan!" With the group and snapped a photo.
"Thank you so much! Have a great day!" Jennie thanked them and ran with her team.
"Oh no, they're almost finished!" J-Hope looked on.
"One last mission!" Jennie exclaimed.
Her heart was racing, her team had to win this. She didn't want to lose.
"Let's go find a camera!" Jin dashed forward. "Where is the camera, man!? Camera, camera."
"Let's go closer to the water. I feel like it'd be easier if we got closer to the water." Jimin suggested.
"Alright, let's move." V walked along and the team walked into the street. "Sorry!"
"Sorry!" Jimin turns to the cars, looking apologetic.
"Screw it, I am not apologizing, the light is green. Just keep running," Jennie huffed out of breath. Near the beach, they continued their search. Hectically searching for someone with a camera until they approached a couple. "Excuse me! Hi! We're currently on a mission and we have to take a picture with someone holding a camera, do you mind if we take a picture with you?"
"Oh, sure." The lady obliged and Jimin quickly took the picture.
"Thank you so much! Have a good one!"
"RUN!" Jimin shouted as they started to dash back to the bus. Jennie sprinted ahead of them. "Run Jennie! Run like the wind! Run like it's the last time you're running! RUUNNNNNNNN~!"
"It's too hot to be running." She sprinted her way to the bus, in the heat. They stopped at a red light as Team A joined them. Gasping for air, she put her hands on her knees for a moment and stood back up. Glistening with sweat, thanks to the physical activity, Jen remained determined to win the challenge with her team.
"We have Jungkook!" Rap Monster happily said. "I have faith in you."
Glancing at Jungkook, she caught him competitively staring her down. He had a cocky smirk on his face as he prepared himself. "If I win, I want your smarties." He demanded.
"Hell no! Not on my watch! If I win, you're not getting any!"
"Make the best team win."
Once the light turned green, Jin held onto Jungkook while Jennie sprinted ahead with her team to get the first seats in the van.
"We won!" Jimin happily cheered. "We arrived first!"
Feeling accomplished, Jennie sighed out of relief and shouted, "AYEEEE!"
After everyone got back in the van, Rap Monster murmured in defeat, "Alright, we lost...I called you guys the leftovers but we lost."
Jimin spoke, "It's our destiny. How could you call us the leftovers? I was so upset that I had to win!"
"It was more like, who could run faster?" Suga added
"I know, I trusted Jungkook!" Rap Monster exclaimed
"Jin grabbed my arm!" Jungkook explained. "And I wanted Jennie's smarties!"
"Here, you goofball, I was planning on giving you some, anyway!" She laughed and handed him a few packs.
"I'm happy, now."
"What's the prize?" Suga asked as the producer checked out the photos from both teams. After showing off their photos, Jimin continuously asked for the prize.
For the prize, it was mini display surfboards.
"Awe yeeahhhh!" Jennie happily accepted the surfboard. Her surfboard was orange and black, showing off a tropical vibe.
"They're for display." Jungkook looked on
"I don't need it at all!" Rapmon brushed it aside.
"I think these could be a nice display in our recording room," Jin said
"Since you did your best, I will give these to everybody." The producer handed them more mini surfboards. Jimin held them hostage while the guys tried to snatch them from him.
----
'KCON 2014 Downtown, LA'
When it was time for the High Touch, BTS walked out to piercing screams and cheers. Jennie matched her members' grey clothes with her hair out in curls.
The cheers were welcoming, yet deafening.
"AHHHHHHH!"
"JUNGKOOKIE! JUNGKOOK-AH! YOU'RE SO CUTE!"
"J-HOPE!"
"RAPMON!"
"JENNIE! OH MY GOD!"
Smiling and waving at the screaming crowd, Jen stood in between Suga and Jin as the eight members greeted the crowd on stage. She blew kisses at the fans and laughed at how their screaming got even louder.
After greeting the fans during the fan engagement, each of the members took the time to introduce themselves to the crowd. Once it was her turn to speak, she looked around at the eager smiles of the fans who were thrilled to see her and the rest of the members.
"Hey~" She waved before widening her eyes at the loud screams. "Oh wow! I wasn't prepared!" She let out a laugh.
"JENNIE, I LOVE YOU!" A fan shouted
"I love you, too! What's up, guys!? I'm so happy to be back, in America! I see you and the fan signs." She pointed to a few fans who made Jennie signs. "For those who don't know me, I'm Jennie! Your Bangtan Girl. I love y'all~ thank you so much for coming to see us!" She let out another laugh over their high pitched screams.
"YES GIRL!"
"JENNIE~"
When asked by the MC if they could choose any K-pop group who would it be and why, Rap Monster answered in English, "If we had a chance, of course, it would be Big Bang."
"Any particular reason?" The MC asked
"Of course, their music is crazy and their performances are crazy." He rambled on.
"Yes, and they're badass!" Jennie enthused.
G-Dragon is supposed to be performing at K-Con, maybe she could try to find him and introduce herself, if possible.
When asked about what was it like to debut, their experience, and what it's like up until now, Jennie genuinely answered after Rapmon. "Honestly, I still can't believe I'm here. Like I'm surrounded by all these amazing fans and a part of an amazing group. I'm grateful. I was so nervous when I first debuted. I get butterflies, just thinking about it. Coming from America to Korea was a big change and I honestly never imagined I would get this far, especially with these guys. Anything you set your mind to, just go for it. Anything can happen if you work hard. Thank you for the support!"
Once asked about their passions outside of performing and doing music, Jennie smiled at some of her member's broken English. When Jin handed her the mic, she answered, "I love playing the guitar, so I like to work on my guitar skills."
"I'm about to cry, she's so cool!" A fan said while filming on their phone.
"I also like to play golf. I have a guilty pleasure for it." Jennie shrugged with a smile.
"Ugh! She's so precious." Another fan said while filming.
For the final question, they are asked what games they like to play or things they like to do when bored, Rap Monster answered, "We play crazy music and dance around." He started dancing. "TURN UP!"
For the high touch session, standing in between V and Suga, Jennie kept a bright smile on her face as each of the fans walked across the stage, tagging each of their hands.
"Jennie~" A girl squealed in a high pitched voice as she tagged her hand. Jen let out a giggle at her fangirling. It was something she was still not used to.
"Your hands are so soft!" A guy, around her age exclaimed as soon as he tagged her hand.
"Thanks, cutie! Lotion does wonders." She quipped with a soft chuckle.
"OMG! You are my bias!" Another girl told her, shaking her hand.
"R-really? Wow. I'm pleasantly surprised. Usually, it's the guys."
"You're more popular here in America than you think. I love everything about you! Please don't stop doing what you're doing. You're my inspiration to become an American K-Pop idol."
"Thank you. No matter what, never give up. Continue to practice and work hard. It may be tiring, it may feel like your dream is far away, but it may be closer than you think. Believe in yourself. You got this. I'm looking forward to seeing you as a trainee and debuting as a soloist or in a K-Pop group in the future, missy." She gave her hands a gentle squeeze as the girl choked out a thank you because of the tears in her eyes.
Once the next female fan approached her to tag her hand, she said without nervousness in her voice, "Hi Jennie! I love your smile!"
"Hi! I love your smile, too, cutie!"
"Jennie, will you please marry me?" Another asked her as he held her hands. He too, looked around her age. "You slay my life. I have the biggest friggin' crush on you. You are seriously just too beautiful."
His eagerness and admiration in his eyes touched her. "Ight. When and where?" She teased. He freaked out in response, getting flustered before he moved on to the next member.
"I love you, Jennie!" A fan said as she passed by her.
"Love you, too!" Jen responded.
After the high touch, Jennie sat next to V and Suga at the table while groups of fans came by for their autographs.
When a teen girl approached her, she started to tear up as she held back the tears. Jennie's expression softened when she looked up at her. "Aw! Smile! Don't cry!" She held her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"You're real right?" She asked in a shaky voice. "I'm not dreaming?"
"Nope, in the flesh is the Bangtan Girl." She smiled sweetly and signed her autograph.
"Jennie! When are you dying your hair like the other guys? Your hair is the same color for the past few comebacks." Another fan questioned curiously.
"When you least expect it." She winked.
Big Hit told her they wanted to leave her hair alone until a future comeback. She was looking forward to the day she would get her hair dyed but also nervous because her hair had never been touched.
"How do you deal with the hate?" A male fan asked as she signed his autograph.
"Honestly, not everyone is going to like me. I understand that. Some crazy fangirls are still angry about having a girl in BTS, claiming they want to kill me and such a such, but Rap Monster helped me to ignore the hate. He told me, 'Ignore the bullshit and not waste my time on the haters'."
"Smart man." The guy nodded. "I agree, don't even worry about the haters. Keep doing what you're doing. I enjoy having a girl in BTS. It brings a nice mix. Been a while since we've seen a coed K-Pop group. Don't worry, your USA fans have your back."
"Thanks, man!" She fist bumped him.
"Jennie, are you ever going to show your abs like the rest of the guys? You never lift your shirt in the bulletproof dance. You remind me of DO from EXO because he hasn't shown his abs yet, either." Another fan commented.
"Hahah, my abs are a work in progress. You'll see them when I'm ready."
"Can't wait! I bet it'll be when we least expect it. You're going to kill us, aren't you?"
"Maybe~."
Once the next fan approached her, she happily greeted them. "I always wanted to meet you and ask you advice on something." The guy mentioned as she looked up at him.
"What do you want advice on?"
"I want to become a rapper for a K-Pop group. But people always keep telling me it's impossible. But then I saw you...and you gave me hope that I can do it. That it is possible to be an American in a K-Pop group. How can I keep the doubts away?"
"With the people saying it's impossible, don't let that discourage you. Don't allow people to tell you that you can't do this or that. If you want to become an American rapper in a K-Pop group, go to all the auditions they have, continue working on your skills and never give up. Prove them wrong. Prove that it isn't impossible. It isn't impossible. You can do it,"
"Thank you...I really can't wait to see your growth in BTS. Been a fan since Amity."
Widening her eyes, she started to grin. "R-really?"
"Yeah, been there since day one. You're cuter than I remembered. I believe leaving the group was your best decision. You're so happy, with BTS. I've noticed."
"Smart fan, that's for sure."
"Uh huh. Can't wait to see you do big things with BTS."
"Thank you. I will never forget my fans since I started performing. If it wasn't for fans like you, I wouldn't be where I am, with all the support. So, I thank you."
"Thank you for sharing your talent with us." He smiled and moved on to the next member. Next fan snuck in a camera to record her. "Jennie, I know I'm not supposed to film but can you say hi Tateana, to my friend?"
"Yeah, sure." She looked at the hidden camera and waved. "Hey, Tateana! Wish you could be here! Thank you for supporting BTS! I hope you're having a great day! Love you, girl!"
"You're the best! Thank you!"
"Jennie! I snuck in to give you smarties!" Another fan handed it to her and her eyes lit up.
"Aw, nice! You are friggin the best! I was craving Smarties, you the MVP! Jungkook ate the rest of my smarties without telling me."
As the last group approached them during the autograph session, Jennie had her head down when she heard someone say, "Hello JW."
"Hi, what's your..." She trailed off as soon as she lifted up her head. Her stomach dropped while the guys watched her with knowing smiles and the fans were questioning her expression change.
"Hah! She's shooked!"
"Deadass...Wow, her reaction was better than expected."
"Is this how you're going to greet us?"
"She's still shooked."
Jen's throat tightened up as hot tears filled up her eyes, covering her mouth as she stood up. There in front of her were her two sisters.
"Surprise, bitch!" Vienna laughed. "Wow! You should've seen the look on your face! Hahaha!"
Out of nowhere, Jennie jumped over the table to attack them with a big hug, earning cheered and awes from the crowd.
"What are you two doing here!?" She shouted in a brittle voice.
"Nice to see you too!" Alani laughed.
"What do you mean what are we doing here? We came to see you, goofball!" Vienna exclaimed.
"Mom and Dad send their love. They weren't able to come with us, but they're hoping to see you soon."
Letting go of them, Jen couldn't stop smiling. Even if their reunion was brief, just the fact that she could see her sisters was more than enough to boost her mood.
"We know you're busy but we wanted to visit you. Gosh, look at you. So pretty. You're glowing." Alani sighed.
"Working hard on the new album?" Vienna crossed her arms.
"Definitely." Jennie nodded.
"How's your guitar? Not slacking, are you?"
"No slacking."
"Good. All right, we gotta go! But we'll see you when you go backstage! Thank Rap Monster for allowing us to come backstage with you!"
Surprised, Jen turned her head to Namjoon, who smiled and waved at her. "You did this?" She questioned while he grinned sheepishly and shrugged. "Thank you for this."
"Anytime, JW."
After the autograph session, Jennie's sisters were allowed to go backstage with her when they had their break.
"So, what's the guy's name that you've been hanging 'round with a lot?" Vienna asked.
"I hang out with all seven of them. Be specific." Jen declared
"His name is Cook. I think his name is cookie? With a C?"
"K. Kookie. That's one of his nicknames. His name is Jungkook."
"Joon kook?"
"Jung. Kook."
"Jung-kook. Ah. Okay. I'll call him Kookie for now. He's cute! I love his smile! You two dating? When are you going to start dating? Do any of the members like you?"
"Oh, my God..." Jennie groaned, facepalming.
"I'm serious, I dunno what goes down in Korea, but they're all good looking, so you never know. Do you like any of them?"
"I have a brother and sister bond, with them!"
"Uh huh. Wait until you get older and the baby fat goes away. You probably won't think one of them is just a friend to you. Okay, so here's what you gotta do. You have condoms, right? I mean, I got some if you want-"
"VIENNA!"
"What? I'm trying to set a good example! Safe sex is better! Make sure you have condoms. And it may hurt the first time so-"
"Oh, my God, PLEASE, stop! I'm not dating, anyone! We're all busy trying to promote music, what are we going to do in a relationship? It won't work."
"IF you weren't dating someone in the group, maybe? You never know who may be looking your way! Just choose your boyfriend wisely. Make sure he's cute, treats you right, makes you laugh, all that good stuff."
"Vienna, I got it. I'm not dating, anytime soon."
"Hit me up when you start getting in your feelings. Been there, done that. Wait...what's this?" She grabbed her hand and checked out her friendship ring.
"It's a friendship ring."
"Who gave this to you? It looks nice. Oh! Kookie gave this to you? FUTURE ENGAGEMENT!"
"STOP! It's not like that!"
"I gotta tell Alani. Better yet, let me ask Kookie himself!"
"NO!" Jen shouted in horror, running after Vienna. She managed to jump on her back, halting her steps.
People laughed at their banter while Alani sighed when she watched the two bicker.
"Oh, my GOD! Stop harassing her! Leave Jennie alone!" Alani shouted in annoyance. "Am I the only mature one, around here?"
After catching up with her sisters, they left to attend the rest of the convention, saying their heartfelt goodbyes. It sucked she would have to leave them, again, but it was nice to see family, back at home.
Walking backstage after eating, Jen's stomach dropped when she saw G-Dragon nearby, sitting on a chair, on his phone. How in the world just luck manage to have him right there in front of her? Her mom always told her, to just walk up to people and introduce yourself and see how everything goes.
With butterflies in her stomach, she decided to approach him.
'He's just a guy. An epic guy, might I add. But just say hi. Say hi and run away.' She thought as she made her way to him. "Excuse me." Her voice sounded more timid than usual.
Looking up from his phone, G-Dragon immediately smiled softly, causing her face to warm up.
"Hi! My name is Jennie. From BTS. It's so nice to finally meet you, G-Dragon." She bowed politely.
She felt like she was about to embarrass herself as she tried to keep herself together. But the way he stared at her, so intently, was intimidating. He stood up and bowed as well.
"Hi!" He intertwined his hands with hers and smiled. "Nice to meet you, Jennie. I've heard a lot about you."
'He's holding my hands-he's holding my hands! Act natural!' She freaked out in her head.
"Re-really? I hope it's all positive. Gosh, I'm trying not to pass out. You're so amazing."
"Thank you, I think you're amazing, too. First time at K-Con? What do you think?"
"I love it! They need to continue this. I believe K-Con will get bigger, every year. I hope we can come back again next year or in the near future. I'm looking forward to your performance. I know it's gonna be lit."
"Are you adjusting to the industry, well? It's not every day we see a girl like you in a K-Pop group. Your Korean is very good."
'Look at me, having a conversation with G-Dragon and he's complimenting me on my Korean. Don't let me wake up from this dream, yet!' She thought.
"I'm well-adjusted now, thanks for asking. The members helped me with everything. I'm enjoying this opportunity."
G-Dragon continued to stare down at her with a smile. "BTS, right?"
"Yep. We're working on our new album, it'll be coming out soon. Um, do you mind if we take a picture? The guys aren't going to believe me when I tell them, I met you."
Letting out a laugh, he nodded and gestured for her to take out her phone. Taking out her phone, and opening the camera app, he put his arm around her shoulders and flashed a grin for the camera while she smiled for the selfie.
Then she decided to take a video. "We're here at KCON LA! And explain to me why I'm with THE G-Dragon, right now? I'm screaming internally!"
"What up!?" He threw up a peace sign. "Shout out to BTS! Shout out to Miss Bangtan! Good luck with your upcoming album!"
After posting the video and selfie on the BTS Twitter, tweeting, 'LIFE IS COMPLETE! G-DRAGON! #Jen'
He was very kind and patient with her as she asked him questions about his experiences so far as a K-Pop Idol and being with Big Bang.
"Some advice I can give to you is to know what you're good at. Keep improving your skills. Challenge yourself. Your dream was to be a part of a K-Pop group? Now dream even bigger. And try not to put a lot of pressure on yourself, or wear yourself out. Take it one day at a time." He advised, while she listened intently, nodding at his words of wisdom.
"I'll work hard."
"Good. I'll be watching you. Do you have an Instagram?"
"I deleted it. I was going to make a new one, soon."
"Okay, when you make a new one, follow me. I'm interested in your growth, here. I gotta get ready, but remember what I said. I'm looking forward to running into you, again. Maybe at the MAMA Awards." He smiled brightly and walked away.
Exhaling as she watched him leave, she ended up smiling and clapped her hands in excitement. She'll never forget the day she had a conversation with G-Dragon.
Back to where the guys were, Jennie walked in and was immediately shaken by Jimin, who shouted "HOW!?" in her face.
"How what!?" She shouted back.
"HOW WHAT!? How'd you meet G-Dragon!?"
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Hobi's loud screams were heard as she was bombarded with questions by the rest.
"One at a time! Jeesh!" Jen calmed everyone down. "All I did was approach him and say hi. I didn't think it would be so hard despite my nervousness. He had to leave to perform but I managed to get a picture and video. He's very kind by the way. Even cuter up close."
After the fuss, Jennie watched on at the guys goofing off, pretending to make a commercial. J-Hope blew the hairdryer at Jennie's hair and she flipped her hair, pretending to look sexy for the camera as she gazed at it.
"Ah! That's too sexy!" Jin pushed her aside. "This is a family program!"
"Hey!" She shouted.
"You look like a horse," Suga told J-Hope when his face was all up in the camera.
"You look like a turtle." He replied.
Later, Jungkook started making a beat to prepare Jimin and V to have a freestyle rap battle.
Standing in between Suga and J-Hope, she rocked back and forth with everyone, shouting, "Aye! Aye! Aye!"
Starting first, Jimin rapped, "Oh no! You tucked your shirt in! That means I'm going to beat you hard! I'm going to punch you hard! And then you'll roll on the floor. And then you'll die!"
"WHA?!" Jennie shouted over the erupted laughs of the members. "V is precious to us all, let's not kill him!"
"Dude, he said he'll kill you. Come on." Rapmon beckoned V.
After V swallowed his food, he said, "Yo!"
"If you keep repeating, 'yo', I'll punch your face!" Jimin added.
"Oh, man!" Suga shouted.
"You gotta come back from that, V! Spit something!" Jennie encouraged
"Yo! I'm chewing on kimbap! Oh, I want to chew your face, too!" V rapped, cupping Jimin's face.
"PFF!" Jen's loud laugh was heard as she held onto Rapmon. "I can't!"
"I want to swallow it, but I can't because of your face!" He started dancing
"What is going on!?"
"What the heck is he saying?" Jimin asked with a laugh.
"Yo! I just ate my lunch but I can't digest it." V went on
"He's not even rapping. Don't beatbox for him."
"Yo, Jay-Z! Yo, Kanye West! Yo, Jimin! So much height difference."
"You have to rhyme." Jimin laughed. "You're just dissing me!"
"It's a different style of rap." V explained. "Yo, I was eating but none of you are funny. I was observing,"
"You're done." J-Hope hit him with the card while Rapmon pushed him back.
Jin was requested to go next. "You can say whatever you want." Rap Monster explained.
"Yo, Jimin! I was listening to your rap all these years! Why don't you throw it away? Your rap is so corrupted. I rap just like...Jay-Z!" Jin rapped while giggling.
As Jen dropped her jaw at his words, Suga shouted out of nowhere, coming in between the two, "Oh my God! OH SHIT! OH MY GOD! It's all over! He raps like Jay-Z! OH MY GOD!"
Squinting his eyes shut, Rap Monster shouted, "WE CAN'T AIR THIS!"
As she continued to laugh out loud, Jen managed to shout, "WAIT! WAIT! That did NOT just happen!"
Meanwhile, Suga continued his freak out, "He's like Jay-Z! Period! Oh man, he's like Jay-Z!"
"I think Jin is out of his mind." J-Hope giggled.
Turning to the camera, Jin said, "I sincerely apologize to all the fans of Jay-Z and hip hop. I just did it to entertain you guys."
-------
The next day was the time of the performance. They were waiting backstage. The loud cheers of the fans were deafening as Jennie had butterflies in her stomach. When the eight of them rose on stage, she looked around in awe, with the fans holding onto their light sticks and other items. After performing No More Dream and Boy In Luv, the eight members make their way to introduce themselves to the crowd.
"WOO HOO!" Jennie shouted on the mic, to louder cheers. "Heh, heh, can you guys get even louder!?"
As the cheers went up a volume, Jen nodded in approval, shooting up a thumbs up.
"All right! All right!" Rap Monster shouted. Standing at the end with V, Jen continued to listen to Rap Monster speak to the crowd. "It's great to be able to perform here in LA, right? So honored. For those of you who don't know us, we're BTS, we debuted last year. For those of you who don't know us, we would like to introduce ourselves. Let's start with J-Hope."
"Woo! Good to see you! I'm your hope! J-HOOPPPEEE! WOO!"
Jimin breathed on the mic and smiled. "WHAT'S UP LAAAAAAAAA! WOO! I'm Jimin, yeah~"
"Errbody I'm Rap Monster, leader of BTS, TURN UP!"
"It's an honor to be here in LA. I'm Jungkook!" He waved.
"Hi everyone! My name is Jin!"
"WHAT'S UP LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!? I'm Suga thank you for coming!"
V looked around at the crowd, earning more screams. "HOW ARE YOU!? AH! ME TOO! V!" He cutely waved.
With a hand on her hip, Jennie eagerly looked around as the crowd cheered louder. "Aye yo! Aye yo! Make some noise for your bulletproof girl scout!" She shouted, throwing the mic up in the air, to listen to the loud cheers. "My name is Jennie! I'm so happy to be here, today! Thank you, LA, for having us! I hope you're enjoying the show so far!"
After Rap Monster recapped their journey of American Hustle Life, they go to their next song, Bulletproof.
When it was Jen's turn to sing, she got in the front of them, singing her verse.
Badda bing badda boom!
Jennie's here
I have no fear...so don't try to stop me
Hah!
Tellin' me your doubts...won't change my mind
You want me to party? I don't have time.
I've been busy workin'
I've been busy dancin'
I'm never prancin'
"Just enhancing!" She sang, hearing the crowd sing with her as she smiled proudly
I will preserve and you can't stop my flow
I'm in my own lane, I'm here to attain
"I got people asking, who's the girl?" She pointed her mic to the crowd as they loudly sang, "The one with the curls! Representing the girls!"
Impressed at their passion for singing along with her, she continued to sing, "I'm the one with the swag and I don't mean to brag but I broke oppositions to get where I am today!"
'Last Day In LA'
Arriving at the airport, the eight members made their way inside the airport. With the camera following them, Jennie turned to the camera and says, "I'm bummed we have to leave. I'm happy I could see my sisters. K-Con was lit! I hope to come back soon!"
"I'm so sad!" Jimin whined.
"It was such a bittersweet experience," J-Hope commented.
"Hi, Jennie!" Fans greeted as she waved at the fans. "Bye V! Bye Jennie! Bye, Jimin!"
Getting on the airplane, Jennie sat by the window with J-Hope in the middle and Rap Monster next to him. J-Hope had his camera on and said in English, "Hello, everyone! I'm J-Hope. Right now, Bangtan is headed back to Korea. We just came to LA. I'm thinking about attempting to converse in all English, starting now."
Turning to Rap Monster, J-Hope greeted him. "Hey, Rap Monster!"
"Hi!" He greeted in English
"How are you?"
J-Hope was confused at what his response was and let out a laugh, shifting the camera to Jennie. "Yeah, Jennie, how are you?"
Looking up from her phone, she put up the peace sign to the camera. "Just chilling, how are you?"
"Good! Good! Rap Monster English very hard. Bear with me. Hey! Jimin! Now English time. Be quiet. How are you?"
"Uh, so good." Jimin answered
"You look so happy. Why happy?" He asked while Jimin tried to figure out what to say. He let out a sigh. "M-my heart is, oh my God."
"We are in America," Jimin said
"Los Angeles."
"LA! LA, man!" Jimin made the LA hand sign, making Jennie giggle at his goofiness. Somehow, he spit out some of his saliva and J-Hope called it dirty water. "Handsome guy, man!"
J-Hope turned the camera back to himself. "Oh, Jimin is very no fun."
"Indeed." Jennie played along. "Such a party pooper."
"Jimin?" Rap Monster asked
"Yeah?"
"You got no jams."

Masterlist /// Chapter 1 /// Chapter 3 /// Chapter 4 /// Chapter 5
A/N: I’m just gonna post this one and run...👀
Two quick things I wanted to note before this chapter... 1) I always guessed that at some point, Carole would have distanced herself from everyone who knew Goose and would have been likely to check up on her and Bradley (i.e. Ice), with the exception of Maverick, of course. I went with that assumption for this story. And 2) As much as Ice covered Maverick’s ass and bailed him out of trouble over the years, I have a hard time believing that Admiral Tom Kazansky would have just *allowed* Maverick to pull Bradley’s Naval Academy application, had he known about it at the time. So, for the purposes of this story, let’s say Ice didn’t know about it, and instead, he found out about it later, and/or Maverick eventually came clean about it.
Again, thank you all so very much for your support of this story. It really means a lot to me. I hope you all have a good rest of the week.💙💙💙

Chapter 4: What You’re Made Of
NAS Oceana
Virginia Beach, Virginia
In almost all aspects, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw was very thankful for how far he had come in life. Though he avoided thinking about it too much, as doing so felt like tempting fate, that still didn’t make the notion any less true.
Professionally, he’d accomplished everything he set out to achieve this far. Not letting his failure to be admitted to the Academy set him back, he forged through an NROTC program at a college in his new home state. He worked his ass off academically and physically in the program, and was fortunate enough to be placed in the very competitive service area of his choice.
His hard work didn’t stop there, and he continued to grind throughout flight school and training, desperate to prove himself and holding onto the hope that good scores and performance would have even just a little bit of sway among the decision makers, and possibly have his opinion of what he would prefer to fly be heard. Fortunately, his minuscule vote had been considered by his superiors, and, after all that hard work, it could finally be said, to put it very simply, that he flew fighter jets for a living.
After training in Lemoore, he was assigned to VFA-87. Not only did he feel respect amongst the rest of the squadron, though not without some good natured ribbing from the rest of his squadron mates, of course, but he also felt valued, too. There had been a few deployments, and he had been very grateful to return back to the States safe and in one piece.
But in his opinion, the shining moment in Bradley’s career by far had been being sent to TOPGUN. Not even having to attend the prestigious Fighter Weapons School with Lt. Jake Seresin- now appropriately going by the callsign of “Hangman”- had been enough to dampen his mood or otherwise ruin the experience for him. They’d gone head to head, back and forth between first and second place in the class throughout the entire almost 3 month program, and Hangman had managed to pull ahead of him right at the end of it. But even though he had finished second in the class behind Hangman, words could not express how grateful Bradley was to have just finished the program at all.
Personally, Bradley was very satisfied as well. In terms of friends, he’d made plenty of them out of his colleagues along the way. Though he didn’t get to see a lot of them nearly as much as he would have liked, it was the nature of the job, and whenever they were able to reconnect or touch base, it was easy to fall back into the rhythm and continue as though no time had passed between them.
In terms of family… Well, that could always have been improved. Losing both of one’s parents before the age of eighteen wasn’t ideal in any situation. But he still had his grandmother, and even though she was on the decline physically, mentally, she was still as sharp as a whip. He always made a point to visit her whenever he had some leave and help her out around the house with whatever she needed.
In terms of those less than favorable in his eyes, Bradley had been very lucky to avoid running into one Captain Mitchell for years, despite the often tight circle that their careers kept them in. With some more luck, that would continue to be the case until the old man retired, or in case he decided not to reenlist, in another few years.
Romantically? …
… That was perhaps the one area of Bradley’s life that still left something to be desired. But there was one tiny hiccup that prevented him from finding any significant happiness in that area of his life.
He was completely, undeniably, and hopelessly in love with Clara Wells.
Eventually, he’d come to realize that he had been for years. Though Bradley couldn’t pinpoint exactly when the feelings of such a strong nature had kicked in internally, he knew that they’d existed for a few years at minimum, at least since the one night they’d gotten to spend together. It was a night that had not been discussed or even addressed by either of them in the over two years since it happened.
Bradley tried to move on from Clara, as he had suggested would happen if they just indulged themselves for that one evening. But, unsurprisingly, that plan had backfired miserably.
He had since allowed himself to keep an open mind, and he would no longer politely turn down pretty women who approached him at bars or elsewhere. He wasn’t looking for anything serious, but he was open to the idea of feeling something, anything, really, other than the numbness that suppressing his true feelings resulted in. But sad as it was, when the fling was over and done with for one reason or another, Bradley always found himself thinking about her.
Since the squadron Clara had been assigned to, VFA-103, was based at NAS Oceana as well, he’d been given more opportunities to see her than he could have hoped for. Even though deployments and other intermittent assignments and missions kept them apart more often than not, Bradley still got to see her. And who was he to deny his “buddy” some quality time? There were always bars to hit, pianos that needed playing, and beers ample enough to help him bury his true feelings and keep up his exclusively-friendly facade he resigned himself to.
When they weren’t able to see each other in person, texting, phone calls, and even writing letters kept them connected whenever possible. It was an odd type of punishment he inflicted upon himself, but Bradley didn’t have the heart to not return Clara’s messages or calls… even if doing so might have been the only way for him to begin to move on.
Bradley had wrestled with the idea of just telling Clara the truth of his feelings, many times over the years, but something always stopped him. But one day, when he woke up to a text message from Clara with some obscure Back to the Future reference, he made up his mind then and there.
He was going to tell her he loved her.
Bradley had no idea what to say or how to tell Clara, but fortunately, he had some time to mull that over.
Clara, or “Parrot”, as she was often referred to now, had been fresh off a second deployment when she got word that she would be going to TOPGUN. She’d been so happy, and it had been extremely contagious. A weird combination of pride and worry culminated in Bradley upon hearing the news, but at the end of the day, he had kept quiet in lieu of seeing her smile. Clara had already been gone for nine of the thirteen weeks of the program, and had tentative plans to take some leave and visit her father in Chicago upon her return.
So, until then, Bradley would bide his time. He’d answer her calls whenever he could, and he would happily listen to her talk to him about the challenging coursework, the colorful classmates, and the new friends she made.
Tumblr media
Speak of the devil. Bradley chuckled to himself as he began typing out his response to the incoming text.
Tumblr media
Bradley glanced at the time. With the time difference, it was starting to cut it a little bit close.
Tumblr media
Just as Bradley was about to put his phone back down and focus on the paperwork in front of him, it buzzed once again.
Tumblr media
He couldn’t help but smile to himself.
Tumblr media
There would never be a perfect moment to tell Clara what he was feeling. But that was okay.
Bradley would take the next opportunity he had, and just try to make the best of it.
Tumblr media
It’d been a close call.
Maybe not the closest call ever, but definitely the closest one that came to Clara’s memory. No moments in any deployment had come close.
Her pilot, Dana “Slugger” Harris, had a near miss with another F/A-18F. In her defense, it hadn’t necessarily been her fault- the pilot in the other plane was initially held responsible. His head must’ve been somewhere else- he came out of seemingly nowhere. Add a little bit of miscommunication and misdirection into the mixture following the near miss, and the incident was almost gravely volatile. All four of them involved were likely to be knocked down a bit in the class ranking because of their failure to properly locate the other plane and put some safe distance between them.
Clara couldn’t really blame Dana for the incident, or for the fact that she was a little shaken up afterwards. She had been there too, after all. But Dana had almost always been cool, calm, and collected. The young woman had a steely nature, and besides from a few incidents, one of which had played a role in earning  her her call sign, she was level headed.
Dana was a reliable and dependable pilot, and Clara often found herself thanking whoever was watching above that their superior officers had decided to keep the two of them flying together over the past few years. Of all the pilots Clara could have been assigned to fly with, she had majorly lucked out with Dana. She felt the safest in the air she had since the very beginning of flight school, despite the truly dangerous nature of the job.
… There was no good explanation for what had happened during the hop that day. Despite the unfortunate timing and place of it, it had to have just been a bad day for everyone all around.
As their pilots were inside the office of the instructor of the hop, presumably discussing the details what had happened, Clara, and the other pilot’s WSO, Robert “Bob” Floyd, waited outside in the hallway.
Bob had become a good friend over her relatively short tenure at the program. He was easily one of the kindest people the Navy had ever allowed her to meet, and he was damn good at his job. Though she was looking forward to graduation, she would dread the day that Bob and her would have to return to their respective squadrons. She would miss the pleasure of his company.
Clara couldn’t help but feel a little bit guilty on Bob’s behalf. Though neither of them had technically been directly involved in the incident that had occurred during the hop, they’d still been present, and whenever the pilots’ communication failed or was otherwise lackluster, it was well within the realm of the WSOs responsibility to step up to the plate. Clara took it especially hard on herself/ Though her tendency to talk too much had gotten her into some trouble early on in the career, since her advanced training and beyond, it had proven to be one of her assets. It’d even played a role in how she had earned her call sign- Parrot.
Clara snuck a glance at Bob. He looked about as nervous as she felt. Though she was not looking forward to the chewing out they were surely about to receive, ashamedly, that was not what had her stomach in knots as the minutes ticked away in the nearly silent hallways.
Getting reprimanded was one thing, and so was possibly being moved down in class ranking. But the few moments of impending doom Clara had felt was something else entirely. She could’ve been toast, for a lack of better words. And if she had been, she never would have gotten the closely guarded secret off her chest, the one she’d been keeping for years.
She was thoroughly, unquestionably, and terribly in love with Bradley Bradshaw.
Surprise, surprise, their half-brained scheme to “get it out of their system” had not been successful. Though they had never, ever discussed it, In the over two years since the one evening had transpired, Bradley had never strayed too far from her brain.
Clara tried to rid herself of the mental hold Bradley had on her. She tried seeing others, and she was open to the idea of keeping her options open. But she always found herself coming back to him. Though things with Bradley were complicated, in another sense, they were easy. No one else knew her like he did. No one else could make her laugh like he did. And, besides her father, no one else had been ever to make her feel as worthy and reassured in her career as he had been able to.
Even if she had committed to finding something serious with someone else, Clara knew she would be hard pressed to leave her friendship with Bradley in the past. Bradley Bradshaw, or “Rooster”, as he was better known as now, had come to mean many things to her over the years. Their friendship was the one last thing she could hold onto. Though deployments and occasional missions kept them apart for good amounts of time, they had been fortunate enough to be assigned to separate squadrons that were still assigned to the same base. Seeing Bradley in passing for a few days and weeks here and there was far better than being cut off from him entirely. And when physically seeing one another was impossible, they still found other ways to keep in touch.
The epiphany that resulted from the training incident made one thing perfectly clear: Clara would have to come clean to Bradley about what she was feeling. Texting wouldn’t do, and  neither would a letter. As uncomfortable as it had the possibility of being, she knew that a face to face conversation would be the most appropriate course of action… She was planning on putting in for some leave after graduating from TOPGUN and returning back to base. Perhaps she could speak to Bradley before she left, and then they would both have some time to process it all.
..
Before Clara could internally fret anymore about her predicament, the door opened, and both pilots filed out, followed by their instructor. The pilots passed her and Bob, but Clara caught an odd look that Dana subtly threw in her direction.
She couldn’t tell exactly what it meant, but she had a good idea. Dana and Clara, and Bob and his pilot, had been vying back and forth for the top spot in the class. Clara didn’t even want to think about the feast that the third runner up pilot and WSO would have upon their failure come the following morning.
“Lieutenant Wells.”
Clara stood to attention, reminded of the presence of their superior officer and instructor. “Yes, ma’am?”
“You are to report to the Vice Admiral’s office immediately,” the woman directed. She glanced at Bob beside her. “Lieutenant Floyd, I’ll be speaking with you now.”
As their instructor turned to re-enter her office, Clara gave Bob a look that conveyed the dread that suddenly filled her.
“I’ll meet up with you later,” Clara said to him under her breath. Even as she spoke the words, they felt ill-fated.
Bob nodded in confirmation, still visibly nervous, and followed their instructor inside her office. As the door shut firmly behind him, Clara knew she had no choice but to force her feet forward.
There were only a few reasons why Clara would have been summoned to speak with the Vice Admiral, and none of the ones she was able to come up with meant anything good at all. As she made her way to the Vice Admiral’s office, the realization that she had been the only one involved in the incident that afternoon to receive such a summons only furthered her dread and fear of what was to come.
Perhaps Clara had misinterpreted the incident in the afternoon. Perhaps she had played more of a role than what she realized. Perhaps this was the beginning of the end, marking a large failure in her career that would result in the disappointment of the rest of her squadron. And her father… shit, her father. How was she going to break this news to him?
When Sam Wells had heard about his daughter’s acceptance to TOPGUN, he’d been over the moon, and so damn proud. Between the deployment and being sent to TOPGUN immediately after, Clara hadn’t been able to see him in almost a year. But her father already planned to attend the graduation, if he could get the time off work. And even if he wasn’t able to, she was very much looking forward to going home and spending some time with him once she returned back to base and could put in for some leave.
The thought of disappointing her father by being kicked out of the program before graduation made Clara seriously contemplate finding the nearest trash can.
Eventually, the Vice Admiral’s office came into sight, and Clara knew that there was no turning back. She was many things, but a coward was not one of them… at least not in regards to her career.
No further comment on any other aspect of her life.
The Vice Admiral’s door was open, and as soon as she approached the threshold, his deep voice invited her inside. “Lieutenant Wells- you can come in. Shut the door behind you.”
Clara did as directed, and entered his office. It was a spacious room, with many windows that let in plenty of natural light. In any other situation, she would have been honored to have been called into the room. But in the current one, her surroundings felt all the more imposing.
“At ease. Would you like to take a seat?” Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson offered.
Though his offer sounded genuine enough, Clara’s initial thought was that it was a test. “No, thank you, sir.”
“Take a seat, Lieutenant.”
The Vice Admiral’s subtle shift in tone left no room for argument. Clara promptly did as instructed, sitting in the chair across the desk from where he was seated himself. She looked at him straight on, not wanting to show any possible sign of disrespect or give him any indication that she was anywhere close to as fearful as she actually was.
He regarded her carefully, analyzing her briefly as she settled in the seat. The look in his eyes was not one of anger, or even disappointment, but it wasn’t something she could place, either. It was, however, remotely similar to the strange look Dana had given her in passing not even ten minutes before.
“Do you know why I’ve called you in here today, Lieutenant?”
Though she had several theories, Clara opted for the most obvious one so as to not waste his time. “I believe it would have something to do with the training exercise today, sir.”
“Unfortunately, it does not,” he responded. “But I was made aware of that. As I’m sure you know, I’ve been told that your instructor will be calling in the rest of those involved in the incident and will be discussing the details of it with each of you. That is to say, if she has not already done so.”
Clara spared a thought for Bob, who was probably being given a lecture at that very moment. Poor Bob. She would’ve offered to swap places with him in heartbeat, both to save him from the reprimanding and her from the tense one-on-one conversation with the Vice Admiral.
“I’m sure Slugger will be able to fill you in on the nature of that discussion, in due time,” the Vice Admiral added.
… In due time? “Yes, sir.”
He paused, and let out a light sigh. “There is no easy way to give you this information Lieutenant, but it is my duty to inform you of something that has happened.”
Clara felt her heart sink. Her mind raced through anything, everything in her past career and personal life that could have caused such an issue that she would receive a special talking to from the Vice Admiral. However, she kept coming up blank.
“Before I give you this news, I want you to know that you have the full support of your superior officers and instructors. No one wants to see you fall behind in this program, or even fail to graduate. We have all agreed to do whatever necessary within our power to work with you to see to it that neither of those things happen, should you be in agreement with that and choose to continue on.”
The nerves didn’t help at all, and Clara couldn’t help but space out at the Vice Admiral’s subtle words. When the haze finally lifted, she realized he was looking at her expectantly, waiting on some sort of response or indication from her that she had heard him.
“What is it, sir?” she inquired quietly.
“... It’s about your father.”
Tumblr media
The house didn’t look so different, despite the passing years.
After a series of quick, but polite, rapt of the knuckles on the front door, there were a few moments of patient waiting that followed. The door opened shortly after, revealing a middle aged woman.
Bradley was taken aback. Though Clara had always joked and insisted that she looked more like her mother than she ever did her father, that fact was made abundantly clear upon the realization that Bradley was then face to face with her aunt. Clara had talked about her late mother’s sister plenty of times, but he had never seen the woman before. In person, it was very easy to see the resemblance between them.
“Good morning,” the woman greeted, eyeing him up and down curiously. “Can I help you with something?”
“I was hoping to see Clara, Ma’am.”
Recognition flashed across the woman’s face, and she gave him a small, tired smile. “You must be Lieutenant Bradshaw.”
She knew him. Bradley made a mental note to address that later. “Yes, Ma’am.”
“Please, come in,” the woman insisted, opening the door wider and allowing him to enter. She closed the door behind him, and added, “She’s in the study.”
Bradley nodded wordlessly, already knowing exactly where to go. As he headed down the hallway, he noticed that the walls that had once been decorated were now bare. He didn’t hesitate before the open doorway, but instead entered the room slowly, unafraid and with purpose. He’d been preparing for this moment ever since he’d first heard the news. And once he had, he knew he had to go to her. Even if Bradley hadn’t already made a promise to check on her, there was not one part of him that would rest until he saw her himself.
Clara’s back was facing him, and she was focused on something he couldn’t quite see. Unsure of what to say, he took a few slow steps toward her instead.
She must’ve heard his footsteps, because she turned around to face him.
Clara looked worse for the ware, not that Bradley would have expected any less. Dark circles under her puffy red eyes were the most alarming sign that her own well-being had taken a backseat to everything else she had been dealing with over the past few days.
“What’re you doing here?” she asked, eyes wide with surprise, her voice slightly raspy.
“I had some leave,” he answered simply.
Clara’s brows furrowed, as if his explanation was less than satisfactory. “You took some leave to come to a funeral for some Lieutenant you didn’t even really know?”
“No,” Bradley corrected, patiently yet firmly. “I took leave to be with my friend who just lost her father.”
At the mention of it, Clara’s lip trembled and her eyes darted away. “I’ll be fine, really,” she said dismissively. Bradley believed her words would ring true in time, but at that moment, he knew they didn’t carry any weight. “Honestly, I shouldn’t even really be this upset… Especially not when your father-“
“Don’t,” Bradley begged, taking another step closer to close the distance between them. “Don’t do that to yourself. Don’t write off your feelings. He was your father, Clara. You have every right to grieve for him.”
When she finally met his eyes again, Bradley saw that hers were filled to the brim with tears. She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it shortly after.
Sparing her any more discomfort by searching for what to say next, Bradley took a final step forward. Before he had even opened his arms fully, she embraced him, tightly wrapping her arms around his middle as the side of her face pressed tightly against his chest.
Bradley placed one hand comfortingly over her hair and the other on her back as he allowed her as much time as she needed. He did nothing as Clara finally allowed herself to break down. He didn’t bat an eye at the vice-like grip on him that made it slightly difficult to breathe, or the dampness quickly forming on the front of his shirt.
He glanced around the room, which used to be her father’s study. A box behind her indicated that Clara was in the process of packing up its contents. But what caught Bradley’s attention most were the walls, which were not yet bare.
Though they had once adorned the walls in the hallway, the display cases that held all of Mr. Wells’ awards, ribbons, and patches, along with his many, many photos, had been moved to decorate the walls of the study instead. And now, they were joined by some of Clara’s own belongings.
There was a photo of her at graduation, standing next to Bradley as the duo gave the camera particularly cheesy smiles. Another photo was of Clara alone; a headshot of her in her service dress uniform. A third photo, which had yet to be hung, rested on top of Mr. Well’s desk. It was a polaroid, also of Clara, and it was far more recent than any of the other photos. In fact, she must have mailed it to him recently, he realized. In the photo, she was standing in front of the Fighter Weapons School sign, pointing at it with one hand while giving the camera a thumbs up with the other.
While the collection was small, it was obviously one well thought and taken care of. It was a collection of someone who was proud. Had Mr. Wells had more time, and had Clara been further along in her career, Bradley had no doubt that the walls would have been decorated with even more of her photos and whatever other effects Mr. Wells could gather.
For the briefest of moments, he dared to wonder whether either, or both, of his parents would have done the same for him. But he didn’t have to dwell on that thought too long- he knew in his heart that they would have.
Clara pulled back, but made no move to remove herself from his arms just yet.
As Bradley looked down at her, he couldn’t help but frown. Though the dark circles under her eyes had been evident from across the room, they were even more plain to see up close, and his concern for her continued to grow.
“When’s the last time you got some sleep?”
Clara took a step back then, and when she did, Bradley let his arms fall back down to his sides. She wiped at the tears slipping from her eyes with the bottom of her palms. “I haven’t really. There’s been too much to do.”
Bradley was disappointed, but he could hardly give her too much grief. Not only would it be hypocritical, but he also got the feeling that she was sensing the lecture was coming. She glanced at him, waiting for his next words patiently. At that moment, Bradley felt reassured that coming to see her had not been a mistake. Maybe she needed him just as much as he felt the need to be there for her. “If you had to guess, how much sleep have you gotten?”
Clara shrugged, averting his gaze as she turned back around to proceed to pack various items into the box on the floor. “A couple hours, here and there.”
“It’s been two days, Clara.”
“Almost three, technically.”
Bradley took a step forward and placed a light hand on her shoulder. The simple gesture was enough to get her to pause her actions and turn around to face him once again. When she did, he placed both of his hands on her upper arms in an effort to steady her and have her focus on him.
Clara’s chin tilted up towards him, and her watery eyes met his own once again. Before he realized what he was doing, his hands drifted upwards, and his thumbs lightly swiped at the circles underneath her eyes absentmindedly.
“You need sleep, Darling,” he murmured softly.
If she minded his actions, or the term of endearment that slipped off his tongue, she didn’t show it. Clara shook her head softly. “I can’t. I need to pack. I need to get everything in boxes, and then I have to get it all to a storage unit until I can come back and actually sort through it all-”
“I can pack boxes just fine. I’ve done it a time or two myself, you know.”
“I can’t ask you to do that, not when you’ve come all the way out here on your own time.”
“You don’t have to ask- I’m volunteering.”
Clara sighed and gave him a look, but Bradley could tell her frustration with him was surface-level at best. After a moment, she relented with a small nod. “Okay… but just for a little bit.”
Bradley gently guided her out of the room, down the hallway, and towards her childhood bedroom. He opened the door from her, and politely ushered her inside. The room was very much the same as the last time he had seen it, despite the passing time, much like the rest of the house.
There was a new addition to the room, though, one that Bradley recognized almost immediately. One of the paper-bound textbooks for TOPGUN laid on top of the bed’s comforter. He hoped Clara hadn’t been studying in lieu of getting some sleep, but the textbook being opened to a page several chapters in told him all that he needed to know.
“Maybe I just need to relax for a little bit,” Clara said then, suddenly eyeing the textbook longingly. “I can still take it easy while I study.”
“What?” Bradley questioned, stunned that she had even suggested such a thing. “No. You need to rest. You need to get some sleep.”
“I need to keep studying, or else I’m going to fall behind,” she argued, walking over to the bed.
Bradley beat her to it, crossing the room in fewer strides and carefully, but swiftly, swiping up the book and closing it before Clara could get it within her reach.
She frowned at him angrily, but Bradley held his ground. He knew what she was doing, whether Clara knew it or not. Not everyone was comfortable addressing grief head-on, especially grief so fresh. It wasn’t unheard of for one to throw themselves fully into something else as a means of a distraction from properly dealing with a loss. Hell, Bradley had done that very same thing himself when his mother had died. While he didn’t necessarily want Clara to wallow, her basic needs, namely sleep at that moment, still needed to be met. And if she wasn’t going to see to it, he was.
“I’ll give this back to you in a few hours, after you’ve gotten some sleep,” he promised, still holding the book out of her reach.
“But-”
“And if I have too, I’ll help you study,” Bradley added persuasively. Though there had been a non-serious running gag between them about who, if either of them, would get to TOPGUN first, it was the first moment that Bradley was genuinely happy that it had been him. It was just another way he could try to be of use to her.
Clara’s frown slowly disappeared from her face. She relented, and finally climbed onto the bed.
Bradley watched her get comfortable for a moment, wanting to make sure she had finally given up on the thought of trying to study instead. “Do you need anything?”
“No,” she whispered, her eyes closing as soon as her head hit the pillow.
“I’m going to get you some water, anyway,” he informed her. “Be right back.”
Bradley turned and slowly left the room, dropping off the textbook on the nearby dresser before heading down the hallway. He entered the kitchen, where he ran into her aunt. After informing her what had happened, and that he would be helping them pack up, the woman looked relieved, and thanked him. Though he should have expected as much, it gave him comfort to know that Clara still had someone looking out for her.
When Bradley returned to her bedroom, it appeared as though Clara was already fast asleep. He set the glass of water down on the nightstand beside the bed, and gently placed a blanket that had been at the foot of the bed overtop of her.
As he turned to leave, he heard a soft, wistful, “Thank you, Brad.”
Bradley looked down at Clara, whose eyes were still closed, with a soft, sympathetic smile. “Anytime, Darling.”

In the end, it had been a sudden heart attack that had taken her father away. It was unexpected; as far as she knew, her father wasn’t experiencing any significant health problems. At least for his sake, it had been quick.
The funeral was also planned quickly, both for logistical and emotional purposes. There were few people to notify, and Clara was only granted so many days of emergency leave in order to see to the affairs.
The funeral was a somber event. Her father had been put to rest beside her mother, who had been waiting for him for some twenty something years. The very few in attendance were largely made up of her father’s closest friends. But her aunt was there as well, and also Bradley. He hardly left her side at all.
Clara was thankful for that. Bradley’s careful watch gave her all the more motivation to keep herself together. One slip in composure, and he’d gladly jump in for support. As much as she wouldn’t have minded it, the thought of it only furthered her guilt. He’d already taken some leave to be in Chicago with her for a few days, and almost the entirety of those days he’d spent helping her and her aunt pack up her and her father’s belongings.
But still, Bradley stuck by her, and Clara couldn’t deny that just having him near brought some comfort. He stood by her side during the funeral, and even afterwards, when the small congregation had traveled to a local bar her father frequented, Bradley was never too far away.
Clara’s aunt took some of the burden from her by helping to greet those who had turned up to the bar, but had opted not to attend the service. Clara could hardly blame them; she would’ve preferred to forgo the intimate funeral herself if she had had the choice. The light atmosphere of the bar did wonders to lift clouds of grief that had loomed over her over the past few days.
But, even with her aunt’s assistance, many of the stragglers insisted on paying their respects to her personally as well. More friends of her father, they were- she knew some, but not all. Most of his office had turned up for the event as well. But there were a few notable surprises.
The first one was a man she almost didn’t recognize, until she took a better look at his face. Bill “Cougar” Cortell was accompanied by his wife and daughter, who looked to be near Clara’s age, but perhaps a little younger. She had met the man a few times throughout her childhood, but it had been well over 15 years since she had seen him last. He offered his condolences for a few minutes before turning and heading over to the bar. His wife and daughter trailed shortly behind.
Clara felt Bradley come to stand beside her. “You know who that is?” she asked, not turning to look at him.
“Cougar,” Bradley answered, evidently having recognized the man from photos.
“... I think his daughter is checking you out,” Clara noted then, stifling a smile as she caught the other woman, who accepted her ordered drink from the bartender, taking glances at the man beside her.
“She is not,” Bradley denied, though Clara could hear the smile in his voice.
“I could introduce you to Cougar, if you’d like,” she offered then. “I’m sure he’d love to meet you.”
“Maybe in a little bit.”
“Clara!”
Her aunt’s hushed whisper immediately grabbed her attention, and both Clara and Bradley looked to the woman, who was standing a few feet away, for the cause of her urgency. Her aunt subtly gestured to the door, where a few more people were making their way into the room.
Even if her father had not pointed him out to her in old photos, Clara would have recognized the man leading the group anyways. He walked towards her slowly, calmly, with a woman, whom Clara could only assume was his wife, on his arm.
Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky came to a stop before her. He gently unwrapped his arm from his wife’s, and extended a hand out towards her.
“Lieutenant Wells, I was very sorry to hear about your father.”
Going through the motions, Clara stuck her own hand out to shake the Admiral’s. “Thank you sir,” she heard herself say, still stunned by the man’s mere appearance. “And thank you for coming.”
“This is my wife, Sarah,” he introduced.
“It’s nice to meet you.” His wife also extended her hand, and Clara shook her hand as well.
After Clara’s hand fell back down to her side, she blinked a few times to reassure herself of what she was seeing. She felt Bradley subtly shift beside her, reverting her attention back to the conversation at hand. “It’s lovely to meet you. And thank you, both- it’s an honor to have you here… Forgive me, sir, but I didn't think to expect you.”
The Admiral gave her a small, reserved smile and he nodded understandingly. “If I may say so, you’re young, and early on in your career, but I’m sure you’ll soon realize- you seldom forget those you fly with. Anyone you fly with. I didn’t have the pleasure of working with your father for too long, but I do know he was damn good at his job.”
In the back of her mind, Clara could hear her father recounting the exact day the Admiral was referencing. It was twenty something years ago, but he always seemed to remember every detail of what had happened that day. And now, Clara realized, the Admiral seemed to remember the day clearly as well. Like Maverick, her father had always spoken highly of Iceman. It touched Clara that the Admiral spoke so highly of him in turn, and she could only hope her father was aware of the Admiral’s opinion of him before he passed.
“I appreciate the wisdom, sir,” Clara commented. Bradley shifted once again beside her, and she glanced up at him briefly. “I’m sorry. sir, if I may, this is-”
The Admiral extended out his hand once again, this time to Bradley. “Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw,” he declared, with a small smile and a particularly meaningful look in his eyes.
Bradley smiled warmly, clearly honored to have been recognized so plainly, and shook his hand firmly. “Yes, sir.”
“The last time I saw you, you were about yay high.” The admiral looked at him with a hint of amusement in his eyes. The look in his eyes shifted slightly, becoming distant, as though recalling some old memory. “God, you look a lot like your father.”
At this, Clara watched Bradley’s reaction carefully. Typically, speaking about anything regarding his father was a hit or miss type of subject, and Clara had a better chance of flipping a coin than betting on whether the topic was going to be welcomed on Bradley’s end or if it would be a sore one.
To her surprise, and relief, Bradley didn’t seem angered by the implication. He actually looked rather humbled. But mostly proud.
“Thank you, sir. I’ve gotten that a lot.”
The Admiral chuckled. “Well, I’m sure you get this a lot too, but it has to be said- your father really was a good man.”
Bradley’s expression remained soft and unbothered. “I’ve been told that before too, but it’s always good to hear it, sir.”
“How is your mother doing these days?”
That was the moment Bradley’s composure slipped. If Clara hadn’t been watching his face, she almost would have missed his faltering smile. To his credit, he recovered in the blink of an eye. The Admiral may not even have noticed the slip.
“She passed away a few years ago, sir,” he replied carefully, his voice a bit thicker than just a few moments before.
It had been more than just a few years, but Clara knew the fib had been done on the Admiral’s behalf.
It worked too; the man made no move to disguise his own falling face. “I’m really sorry to hear that.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Sarah Kazansky cleared her throat quietly, and the Admiral spared no time in changing the subject to prevent an awkward conversation. His eyes darted between the pair of them curiously. “So, the two of you know each other?”
“Yes, sir,” Clara answered, smiling proudly. She spared another glance up at Bradley, who still looked a little bit uncomfortable by the previous subject. “We’ve been good friends for several years now.”
At this, Bradley’s crestfallen face slowly disappeared, and the corners of his mouth twitched upwards in a small smile as he looked down at her briefly and met her eyes.
“Really?” the Admiral asked, the surprise evident in his voice. He looked between the two of them once again, as if trying to come up with the answer of “how” for himself. “I guess it’s a small world. You two must be like birds of a feather, huh?”
It hadn’t crossed her mind, but the more she thought about it, the more apt a description for them it seemed to be. Clara nodded and smiled politely. “Something like that, sir.”
“Well, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the both of you,” the Admiral confided seriously. “I’m sure I will continue to hear the same.”
Despite the slight surprise at the revelation of that information, Bradley and Clara both answered, in unison, “Yes, sir.” The honor of the Admiral’s words was not lost on either of them.
The Admiral gave them one last smile and nod before entertaining his arm with his wife’s once again. He moved to head over towards the bar, but stopped. To Clara directly, he said quietly, “Lieutenant Wells, if you see Maverick, would you please send him my way?”
Bradley’s jaw clenched.
“I have yet to see him, sir, but if I do, you’ll be the first to know,” Clara replied without skipping a beat.
“Thank you.”
Once the Admiral and his wife were out of earshot, Clara turned to face Bradley with a concerned expression. His jaw was still clenched.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t think about the possibility of him showing up... Do you want to head out early, in case he does?” she asked him quietly.
Though hadn’t been talking or texting every day as of late, Clara was fairly certain that if Bradley had had some sort of miraculous reunion with his later father’s best friend, he would have informed her about that development in their otherwise severely strained relationship.
Bradley relaxed at her question, and looked down at her with tired but caring eyes. “No,” he answered, his tone one that left little room for argument. “You’ve had a lot on your mind, it isn’t your fault. If he shows up, so be it. We have nothing to say to each other. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is going to stop me from being here for you right now.”
Without thinking about it, she embraced him in response to his words.
The gesture was quickly returned.
As the afternoon went on, the absence of one Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell became painfully obvious. Cougar had even inquired about whether Clara heard from him. She had not.
But the Admiral had mentioned him specifically, and Clara had a feeling that if the Admiral knew of her father's death, she couldn’t imagine that information wouldn’t have been shared with Maverick as well.
On one hand, Clara was happy when the Captain ultimately decided not to make an appearance. Bradley was more at ease that way.
But on the other hand, she couldn’t help but feel some anger stirring within her at the thought. Had her father not been in the plane with Maverick that day he shot down the three MiGs? Merlin was not Goose, and she knew that, but he’d flown with Maverick just the same. He had his back just the same. Hell, her father practically idolized the man, and seldom said a negative thing about him.
The Admiral, who had also been there with them that day, but in a completely other plane, had taken time out of his incredibly busy schedule to show up and offer his condolences. And Captain Mitchell had not.
Though he had explained his side of the story, at some point over the years Clara had begun to chalk up Bradley’s anger with Maverick up to some miscommunication and misguided good intentions. But Clara was beginning to realize why Bradley felt the way he did, and why his anger had pursued despite the passing years.
Perhaps the infamous Maverick wasn’t all he was cracked up to be after all.

“What time does your flight leave?”
“Not for a few hours.”
The following day, almost all belongings in what used to be the Wells’ residence had been packed up and moved into a few storage units. It’d been a lot of hard work, but it’d been accomplished in a timely manner with Bradley’s help. Clara hadn’t been able to stop thanking him since the day he arrived. As if he actually minded; he would have come to Chicago for her anyway.
Some of the bigger pieces of furniture remained in the house, including the table and chairs on the pack patio. In a few weeks, Clara would hire some movers to take what remained of the furniture out of the house, and it would eventually be sold. But for now, the patio was proving to be a nice resting place for them to both decompress over the past few days.
“Mine leaves tonight,” Clara commented. “After you leave, I’m going to go see my aunt for a little bit longer before heading to the airport myself.”
Bradley nodded, happy with the fact that Clara wouldn’t be left alone for too long. Perhaps he had been hovering over her too much over the past few days, but if he had, it’d only been done with the best intentions. He was no expert in the matter, but having lost both parents himself, he thought he could see a few signs of less-than-productive coping methods. So far, he hadn’t seen much in Clara that gave him cause for concern… except for one thing.
“Are you sure you're ready to go back?” he dared to ask, despite being well aware of how she would take his question that had been posed innocently enough.
As expected, Clara grimaced. “We were having such a nice time,” she complained half-jokingly.
“It’s only been four days, Clara.”
“Closer to five.”
“Fine, five. It’s only been five days, Clara.”
“And that’s five days I’ve missed out on. FIve days worth of work that I’m behind everyone else on.”
God, she’s stubborn, Bradley couldn’t help but think to himself, albeit with some fondness. “I doubt anyone would give you much grief if you decided to-”
“Don’t say that,” Clara interjected.
The sudden harshness of her tone took him aback. He must’ve made some sort of face in response, because Clara’s stern look visibly softened as she looked at him.
She cleared her throat, and shook her head. Softer, she added, “Don’t say that, please. Not finishing is not an option.”
“It can be, if it’s what’s best for you,” Bradley insisted gently.
“And why is finishing the program not the best thing for me?”
“If you’re ignoring things you need to deal with, at some point that stuff will come out at the worst times. Believe me, I know. I’ve been there.”
He knew this all too well, actually. Not properly dealing with his mother’s passing all those years ago led to one too many angry outbursts against undeserving people. And, given what the both of them did for a living, Bradley couldn’t help but fear the thought of Clara's mind being anything less than sound when she could happen to be tens of thousands of feet up in the air.
It wasn’t that Bradley thought Clara incapable of grieving and moving on properly. He had the utmost faith that it was possible, knowing her. But the timing of it all, and just how adamant she was about quickly returning to TOPGUN, made him pause. Whenever Clara was involved, he’d rather voice his opinion and err on the side of caution then remain silent and live to terribly regret his decision later.
“You don’t understand,” Clara continued when he did not respond. “I have to go back.”
“Why?”
“Because if I don’t go back now, I might not go back at all.”
“You don’t know that-”
“-But I do. This is my one chance, Brad. You know as well as I do that not everyone gets a chance like it, either… let alone a second one. I have to see it through. For him.”
Her weighted implications delayed Bradley’s reply. But after a moment, he pushed forward, determined to state his case. “Your dad wouldn’t want you to run yourself ragged on his behalf, Clara,” he reasoned sympathetically.
“You still don’t get it,” Clara huffed, though she sounded more tired than irritated. “My dad had a chance to go to TOPGUN once- you know that. Things didn’t work out though, and after that, he never got another chance. But you should’ve heard how happy he was for me when I told him I’d gotten in. He was so proud. He was going to try and make it to graduation…” she trailed off, eyes veiled as though lost in some memory. A moment later, they refocused on Bradley with a newfound sense of steely resolve. “He gave up his military career to raise me, and I cannot let that go to waste. I will not blow this chance. I have to finish. I have to graduate. Not just for him, but for myself.”
“I’m not going to be able to talk you out of this, am I?” Bradley asked calmly, though he already knew his answer.
“No.”
“Then I won’t,” he promised, settling back into his chair comfortably to silently signal that there was no ill-will between them.
Clara was quiet for a moment. Then, she turned to him, and asked, “Do you know what my dad said to me, after he found out about the results of service selection?”
Bradley merely shook his head once.
“He said, ‘Time to show them what you’re made of, kid,” she recalled somberly. She looked away from him slowly, and her eyes focused on something distant, if it was even something physically present at all. “I know you’re worried about me, but I need to do this. There is no one else out here that I need to impress anymore. There’s no one else out here who would be disappointed in me if I don’t give this my all. So if I can’t make the best out of my career for my own damn sake, then I might as well give it all up right now… And I just don’t think I could live with myself if I did that.”
Clara’s impassioned words resonated with Bradley very deeply. Besides his grandmother, he had no one left to appease but himself, either. … And her.
“... You’re wrong,” he disagreed softly after a few beats of silence.
Clara looked over at him once again, her eyes fixated on him with a look mixed between bewilderment and anger. “I’m sorry?”
“You’re wrong,” he repeated plainly. “If I ever find out you do anything at less than your best, Red Cross, I will personally be very, very disappointed. So, go- show them what you’re made of.”
Seeing the slow-forming smile on her face in response to his half-serious, half-playful tone would have been worth the trip to Chicago in and of itself.
“I just wanted you to make sure you take the time you need,” Bradley explained. “If what you need is to keep on going, then you should do it. I will support you in any way I can. But, you should know that you were still right about something else you said, though.”
“What’s that?”
“You don’t need to impress anyone… But you already do, even without having to try.”
The smile on Clara’s face was plain as day now. It was one of the very few Bradley had been graced with over the past few days, but he was thankful for it regardless. Her eyes welled with tears, but this time, Bradley had a good feeling that they were not ones of sadness. “Thank you, Brad… That really means a lot.”
“It’s the truth… Just, don’t be a stranger, alright? If you ever want to talk, about anything at all, I’m always a text or phone call away.” Most of the time.
“We could never be strangers, Brad,” Clara replied with a playful scoff. She thought to herself for a moment. “Not after everything that happened.”
It was the first explicitly clear reference that either of them had made to the night that had happened more than two, going on three years back. Bradley wasn’t as bothered as he thought he would be by it, though. In fact, hearing Clara verbally reaffirm that what had happened was not a figment of his wildest imagination was reassuring. … Had she thought about that one night over the years, like he had before many times?
… Was it possible she loved him, too?
Neither of them knew what else to say after that. Instead, the pair continued to sit as they were, and a deafening, yet oddly comfortable, silence fell over the both of them as the ambience of the surrounding Chicago suburb filled their ears instead.
“Hey, Brad?”
“Yeah?”
“... We’re still buddies, right?”
“Always, Red Cross.”
She smiled.
“Besides... You still have my shirts.”

“I’m really sorry we didn’t end up first in the class.”
“Are you kidding me?” Dana asked incredulously. “Don’t you dare apologize about that!”
Several weeks later, Clara and Dana watched quietly as Bob and his pilot were handed the plaque that symbolized their top performance amongst the best of the best.
“Second place is still worth noting, right?” Clara asked her hopefully.
Despite the training incident, and Clara’s sudden absence of a few days mid-course, the duo of pilots and WSOs had been able to make their way back to the top of the pack with a lot of hard work. That had been no easy feat, but Clara still thought it a little disappointing to have come so far just to fall short at the end of the program. She couldn’t help but feel as though her absence had potentially lost a spot at the top of the class not only for herself, but for Dana, too.
Dana turned and gave her an incredulous look. “Clara, it’s worth noting that we finished the program at all.”
Upon processing the other woman’s words, Clara did a double take. There was no simply no way Dana could have known how deeply her words resonated with her… And judging by the forming smile on the other woman’s young face, Dana had no idea. Clara forced a small smile and nod to makeup for her failure to immediately reply.
“Come on,” Dana said then. “I could use a drink. Or two. Plus, we’ve got some people to see.”
A trio from their squadron had flown out for the graduation as a show of support. Though they had (mostly) behaved during the ceremony and speeches, Clara could already tell, even from across the courtyard, that the crew was beginning to become their typically rambunctious selves.
Even Dana’s parents had flown in for the occasion. Though seeing her pilot being reunited with her family warmed her heart, it was double-sided with some pain in Clara’s own as she recalled who was unable to attend and see her… But then she remembered.
As Dana headed over to the concession table, Clara lingered behind, her eyes searching the rest of the courtyard. She spotted him almost immediately.
Bradley Bradshaw.
He had surprised her just before the ceremony started, greeting her warmly. She hadn’t expected to see him, and she told him as much. All he said in response was, “Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”
They’d been unable to get more than a few words in before they had to part. But before doing so, he promised to catch up with her later, telling her that they needed to talk.
The fact that Bradley had taken even more leave to come to the graduation made Clara realize just how much she appreciated his presence in her life. He’d been a rock for her following her father’s death, without her even having to ask as much of him. And even before that, Bradley had done nothing but support and encourage her along the way. Clara could only hope that she had done the same for him.
She still loved him, and that wasn’t likely going to change soon… if at all. But she was glad she hadn’t confessed her feelings to him before she came to her senses.
Clara knew that Bradley had played a large role, passive or not, in her ending up where she had. She knew she had found a true companion in him, this man who she had only met by way of backup plans and pure chance. She knew their line of work was dangerous, and that was both unavoidable and undeniable. But she dreaded the thought of doing something that would lead to him leaving her life by choice.
She couldn’t risk ruining their friendship.
Even if it meant numbing those pesky little feelings of love that she held for him.

Proud was an understatement of what Bradley felt.
He smirked to himself as Clara’s particularly rowdy squadron members enveloped her and Slugger in a hug that could only have been described as bone-crushing.
They’d flown in on the same connecting flight as him. Bradley would have been remiss if he hadn’t taken the opportunity to get a little more insight into his “buddy”. While he had gotten some information he was looking for from them, he would readily admit that her squadron members had drilled him a little bit too. It seemed it was obvious amongst them how close the two of them were while on base.
Bradley wanted to join the group across the courtyard in their mirth, but in all honesty, he was trying to delay the inevitable.
That, and he didn’t want to be seen as disrespectful. Since he had been to TOGUN himself within the past year, many of the instructors had remained the same. When a few of them noticed him in attendance, they couldn’t help but pull him aside for some words and to catch up.
So, Bradley made polite small talk with them. But as he did so, he was constantly eyeing the group, or more specifically, one of them, across the courtyard longingly.
Though he had intended to attend the graduation regardless, especially in light of Mr. Well’s unforeseeable absence, what was supposed to have been a cheerful event had been tainted in light of the news Bradley had received upon landing in California. As he watched Clara smiling across the way, he knew without a doubt that he would make small talk with every guest attending if it meant putting off the conversation he was going to have with her. Bradley knew that as soon as the conversation began, Clara’s cheerful resolve would disappear.
While he’d be damned if he killed this pivotal moment for her any sooner than he had too, the clock was still ticking. His departure to report back at Virginia Beach was imminent.
Bradley watched her talk enthusiastically with another peer. It was a man whom Bradley recognized as being one of the two who had been acknowledged as top of the class, and whom Clara would later introduce to him as her infamous friend, “Bob.” As they conversed about something Bradley could only guess at, his thoughts drifted elsewhere than the five person shop-talk conversation he was barely a part of anyway.
He was relieved he hadn’t confessed his true feelings to her, despite him feeling hell-bent on doing so.
Had he told her, and his feelings not been reciprocated, Bradley wouldn’t have been able to be there for her when she really needed someone. And since Clara had been there for him, whether she knew it or not, years back when they first met, and when he was dealing with a few inner demons of his own, the least he could do was return the favor. But, more than that, having someone like her in his life was a constant that Bradley had been afforded very few of. As selfish as it was, having her in his life, in any capacity, made him happy. And he’d be damned if he did anything at all to jeopardize that. Even if it meant choosing to follow his mind instead of his heart.
But hell, he still loved her. And he doubted that would ever change.
… That’s never going to change, Bradley realized solemnly, taking a forlorn glance at Clara across the courtyard. So long as she was in his life, which is one of the few things he wanted more than anything else in the world, the feelings he held for her would probably never go away.
The sudden epiphany was not shocking, but it was all the more bittersweet in light of everything else.
Specifically, it was bittersweet in light of the orders Bradley had just received a few hours prior, which had informed him that he, and the rest of his squadron, were to be deployed in less than 48 hours.

Present Day
...
Clara let out a laugh in response to a particularly jarring joke Phoenix cut at Hangman’s expense. As she settled down, she glanced over at the small crowd beginning to file into the bar. And who she saw, donning his expected aviators and one of many, many Hawaiian print shirts in his possession, both very much expected of him, made her heart skip a beat involuntarily.
He stood just inside the entryway, and she could tell even with the glasses that his eyes were scanning over the patrons of the bar. He was reading the room.
Phoenix looked up from her lined up shot on the pool table and over towards the entrance of the bar as well. “Bradshaw!”  she called, suddenly standing up straight. “Is that you?”
He made eye contact with Phoenix, and after a brief look of recognition flashed across his face, he began to head towards their direction. As he walked, his eyes continued to look over those he passed by.
She watched with piqued interest as he came closer. Eventually, his eyes met hers.
He smirked.
The promise of something greater than friendship between Bradley Bradshaw and Clara Wells had taken a back seat to their careers and personal fears. Though the sparks between them remained over the years, several ill-timed events had prevented them from admitting the truth.
Finding the courage and the right time for themselves to address the feelings they continued to bury was beginning to seem impossible.
Thankfully, the universe saw fit to keep letting them try.

The Senator of the Forsaken - Part 4
Author’s Note : Please remember that English isn't my native language, so there might be some mistakes and stuff. A shout out to Space Bird for doing the beta read, I really appreciate it! I hope you all like it, have a great day/night!
TW : none
As the days passed, Rex slowly started to realize just how important yet difficult the senator’s job was.
He attended meetings with him, though all he did was stand in the corner of the room or next to the door, keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior or changes in their environments. Said meetings could sometimes last hours, as Skywalker tried to convince his fellow politicians to vote on his bill, only to hear ‘I’ll think about it’ in response. Then, he had to say his goodbyes, with a calm look on his face, to hide the sadness and disappointment, before walking out and letting his shoulder drop in visible defeat. Rex refrained from saying anything, mainly because he didn’t know what he possibly could to cheer the man up. From his very little knowledge about politics, in order for a bill to pass it required the majority of the votes and so far, most of the other senators were unsure or decided to abstain. Said voting was to happen in a few weeks time, to give everyone the time they needed to make their decisions, and Anakin was hard at work to get all the support he could get, arranging meetings, writing speeches and keeping track of all the people who promised him their support. Rex would be lying if he said that he didn’t enjoy his job, beside strict schedule and long meetings, that would sometimes last well into the night, he felt quite happy with it. Sure, there were ups and downs, when someone looked at him weirdly or spat a snarky comment behind his back, but that didn’t really matter now. He found Skywalker’s company pleasant, as the said senator had a way to charm those around him, with his jokes and cheerful, sometimes even playful behavior in between the meetings. He was respectful to those around him, no matter who they were, a droid, a guard, a bartender or a clone trooper...
He was different than other senators, that was for sure.
As the blond man sat down in the empty cafeteria, his thoughts went back to his brothers. From what he knew, everyone was alive and well, slowly pushing back the Separatists out of the Outer Rim. He couldn’t help but miss them. All of them. Not just his brothers and sisters, but also the Jedi generals and the young padawan. Hell, he even missed the kriffing clankers! Oh, what he would give to hit one right now... He felt quite lonely, as he hasn’t made any friends, not even with his bunkmates, whom he shared his room with. He was the first to wake up and the last to return, so he didn’t really have the opportunity to chat and get to know any of them. Plus, he was kind of unsure, maybe even scared. He didn’t know how they would react to him, so he tried to stay out of their way. He knew how clones were treated by the Senate Guard, as he had an opportunity to talk with Fox a few times during his stay here. The older clone told him to keep his head low and to try avoid problems, and he did just that. He finished eating and continued his daily walk to the senator’s apartment, quickly making his way to the top floor. With some relief he noticed that the view through the window no longer had such an effect on him, so he paused for a minute, his eyes scanning the city. From up here, the city residents looked like ants, as they walked through the labyrinth of various shops, restaurants and bars. They were so small compared to the skyscrapers, it made Rex wonder if any of them were haunted by the thought of being insignificant when looking around. The universe was nearly infinite, with stars and planets older that the time itself... He shook his head, letting out a sigh. He decided not to dwell on the very existence of life, as it would distract him from his duties. Speaking of duties, the senator hasn’t come out yet. It surprised the clone, as the man was always on time. At nine am sharp he would open the door and greet Rex with a smile, engaging in some small talk and such. It was a tradition of some sort, meeting in the doorway at the same time, every day. He waited for a minute longer before knocking on the door. Maybe Skywalker overslept, he thought, but then he heard glass shattering from inside the apartment, followed by loud voices. Acting on pure instinct, he grabbed his blasters and opened the door, guns raised, ready to shot potential intruders or assassins. To his surprise, he didn’t see a group of armed men, but the senator himself, standing over a broken glass of wine, looking at him with a mixture of surprise and fear. Next to him was Padmé, starring at the clone from her spot on the couch. “The Force, you scared me!” Skywalker exclaimed, putting a hand over his heart. “Is everything okay? Did something happen?” Rex slowly lowered his weapons, unsure of what he should do. The senators were fine, yet there he was, barging in like a madman, guns blazing. “I apologize, senators.” he said, trying to hide his embarrassment. “I heard the crash and you weren’t answering the door...” He put away his blasters, averting their gaze as he shifted towards the door. “I’ll leave you to it...” Before he could reach the door, Amidala stopped him by inviting him to sit down next to her, with a warm smile on her face. “Please, stay, Rex.” she said, scooting over so he could sit down. “Would you like some wine?” “Padmé, its 9 am.” Anakin said, a cheeky smirk on his face. “Isn’t it just a tad too early for that?” “Oh shush, you simpleton!” she shot back, pretending to be angry. “You’re the one leaving for vacation, while I have to stay here and take care of everything.” She huffed angrily as the man laughed in response, shaking his head before focusing on the cluttered coffee table. Rex watched the two as they bickered, before looking around the room. It was his first time here, inside the senator’s apartment. He only caught a glimpse of it, but now he could finally take a better look at it. It appeared as they were in some sort of a living room, spacious yet cozy, with an inviting atmosphere that was both elegant and rustic. The beige walls were adorned with paintings and carvings of dragons and stars, overlooking at the people gathered in the room with big, golden eyes. A massive bookshelf lined one wall of the room, filled to the brim with books on various subjects, from science and technology to philosophy, history and art. A few small, wooden statues served as bookends, so they wouldn’t fall over upon removing a tome. A bench made of sturdy and polished sandstone, that served as the coffee table, had a unique scene carved in the countertop : a group of people, standing under the twin suns, dancing around a horned, serpent-like creature that was emerging from the sand. It was coiled in the center of the carving, its scales intricately detailed, with its eyes seemingly alive. Rex could feel its gaze on him, even though he knew that the creature wasn’t real. Two comfortable armchairs, made from polished driftwood and covered with beige cushions, sat across from them, on the other side of the bench. Both had a symbol of a sun stitched into the cushions, with  golden twine and hints of silver. The couch Rex was sitting on was a comfortable one, made from leather. It had a rich, caramel color, the leather slightly distressed but well maintained, showing the years of use. In the center of the room was a circular rug, soft and plush, made of rich wool, with a subtle pattern that tied the room together. The main color of the mat was a slightly sandy brown that matched the other pieces of the furniture. The pattern on the rug consisted of intertwined dragons and sunbursts, woven in shades of gold, copper and rust. The details were so precise that one could feel the texture of each scale and the warmth of rays of the sunbursts. Suddenly, Rex was snapped back to reality by Padmé, who gently nudged his shoulder to get his attention. “More wine?” she inquired, motioning to his now empty glass. “Thank you, senator, but I shouldn’t.” he responded with a smile. “Can’t drink on duty. Speaking of which, what’s going on?” “Ani’s going to Tatooine.” she responded. “Vacation.” “For the last time, it’s not a vacation.” Anakin shot back while folding some clothes and throwing them on the bench. “I need to be there for the podracing, to fulfill my senatorial duties? I have a reputation to uphold, you know that.” She hummed in response as he walked away, heading to one of the neighboring rooms for the rest of his things. Rex’s gaze accompanied him to the door, before turning his eyes back to the sandstone bench. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” “Yes.” he responded, glancing back at his companion. “But, what’s the scene about it? The serpent and the people around it?” “Anakin loves this bench. He uses it as a conversation starter.” she leaned forward and brushed away the mess that obscured the carving. “This is Nyoka Huru, the great serpent of Tatooine. A symbol of good fortune, believed to emerge from the sand when the planet was in need of a divine intervention. Its arrival promised rains after a drought, flourishing crops and clear skies during the night for stargazing.” Rex nodded his head, listening with amazement as she explained the meaning behind the carving. “Amazing.” he said quietly, once she finished talking. “But, isn’t Tatooine a crime infested planet? How come it has such beautiful culture and history?” “That’s the sad part.” Padmé said, letting out a sigh. “Tatooine was once controlled by the Hutts and a handful of other gangs. They forced their own beliefs of violence, money and slavery onto the people, as they couldn’t fight back. All of this had to go underground, hidden away in attics, to serve as a reminder of what the planet was like before. When Anakin took over, the people of Tatooine no longer had to live in fear of the oppressors. They could go back to their old ways, focus on art, dance, stars...” She once again sighed, her expression sad and tired. “The people love him for that. For giving them their freedom back. But, some don’t. Powerful people, who made profit off of slavery and crime, want him gone.” she glanced at the man sitting next to her, her eyes watery. “Promise me you’ll keep him safe. I know that he feels safe there, on Tatooine, but evil never sleeps.” Rex could only nod in response as she wiped her eyes, a gesture that said all she needed to know.
I will.

Okay anon hope you see this, this is some of my thoughts of my (100% headcanon) illegal Star Trek food fights (any genders that aren’t mentioned are either enby or genderfluid or I haven’t settled on one)
So mostly why it’s illegal is that they don’t want to bother with getting the proper papers for serving people food but also as a rebellion
The fights used to be legal and were decided by a panel of judges, but it quickly became apparent that at the very least they were xenophobic (only letting in human and contestants of specific species), but things truly came to a head with the bribing allegations
Contestants are judged by 1) presentation (huge part of it, they gotta be really flashy for the judges and audience, 2) appearance (food has to look appetizing or look correct for the type of dish they’re making), and of course 3) taste
The winner in the last legal competition was a human male who had won the title repeatedly but was not, by the audience’s standards, the most entertaining and his final dish did not quite look correct for what he made (color was off, the meat should not have looked gray), especially compared to his Orion competition, so this of course sparked outrage as people were pretty sure he paid off the judges
So the competitions have disbanded ….except they actually continued, but illegally
Now, the competitors are judged by majority vote from the audience, which makes it more fair, but a bit more intense, as they have to make enough samples for every person
The competitors are given a theme and a time limit (different each time) and must finish their dish in time, but they have to be huge show offs during, after they’re done, the samples are distributed to everyone, every chair has a vote button, and the numbers are counted anonymously and displayed on a board for everyone to see who’s leading
So now that it’s illegal, funds for it come from audience members who pay to attend, and part of that money goes to the final big prize at the end of the season, audience members can also buy merch from their favorite contestants, and those contestants can use the money however they want (usually to buy cooler equipment, thankfully since this is after scarcity, none of them need the credits to live)
The season battles starts off with a huge number of competitors that slowly get beat out, leading to a fantastic 5 person showdown, it has a competition every week, several of the competitors from different brackets are chosen, given their theme ahead of time, and come to battle it out, with only 3 being allowed to move on to the next competition
There is small battles that happen every few days, called “honor battles”, because there’s no actual prize for winning, you’re usually just earning back your street cred or showing that you’re a capable contestant so that you can hopefully join the next season (so anyone can join honor battles, but you usually see familiar names, and they’re good for getting people to buy your merch)
Honor battles are usually 1v1, and you aren’t allowed to know the theme beforehand, but the audience is usually much smaller so making enough samples is much easier
Currently, the 3 favorite contestants of the season are a Romulan (so far has made fantastic food, but the appearance of the food is unsettling to people (it’s Earth/Romulan fusion food) putting some people off on it), a Klingon (absolutely an amazing showman, so fun to watch cook, taste doesn’t beat the Romulan tho), and a Vulcan (makes food that looks and tastes great, but she’s so bad at making a show of it)
Also the human man from earlier is in the competition and is surviving, but barely, fueling the suspicions that he was cheating his way earlier
In the honor battles, the most anticipated one is between a different Romulan and a Human woman, the Romulan lost against her because of an equipment malfunction, so they’re battling again with the same theme (it’s the first time contestants have been allowed to know ahead of time their theme for an honor battle) to see how the fight would’ve actually turned out (unfortunately, whether the Romulan wins or not, the Human is still the one who’s in the season, but they should get their honor back)
There’s probably more that I have forgotten to add (any and all questions are absolutely welcome) but so far the relation this has to my Oc is that he loves attending and he’s recently shown them to his Klingon friend that is insisting they support the Klingon contestant specifically because he’s Klingon (Oc has no idea how to bring up that his favorite is actually the Romulan from the season)

I'm Back!
Wow, so Lent is over now, so my tumblr fast is also over and I'm still a little in shock, lol. I had hoped the past six weeks? I don't know, Time is weird, would be more productive but at least I got SOME stuff written/posted. Anyway, I have one more month of school and then fucking FINALS so expect sporadic updates at idiot-o-clock hours of the night, and maybe yell at me to sleep, eat, study, or drink water whenever i do post 😅
I am up to SO EFFING MANY wips rn on so many different fronts you guys have no freaking idea 😭 so here's a status report for EVERYTHING on or going on sardonic_sprite. (Its gonna be a monster post, y'all, bear with me)
in absolutely no particular order:
Wayne4Ham: We have a LONG way to go with this one, so just be patient and I'll slowly but steadily plug on through. Aaron Burr, Sir, should theoretically take me no longer than end of april
Wayne-Crazy: there's like 4 specific requests on it, plus a few 'series' i started, but after those, say 6-7, i'll probably mark as complete and only re-open if someone offers me an idea
Batman Beginners: i'll tell y'all up front, this one will take me forever. i don't even know what all I intend to cover, but know that i'm halfway done with the DITF arc, and it'll probably come out in the next two months
Just A Kid: this was my shits-and-giggles fic that got like 3000 notes in a weekend lmao. it's something i do intend to continue bc its so fun and i enjoy the concepts in it, but i don't have plans to actively write more of it in the immediate future.
Rev Wayne: just gave y'all Jason's fic, so the next probably won't come until late in summer, extrapolating from my few data points. if anyone has ideas for timmy's intro, let me know, i'd love some inspiration
Celeb Batwaynes: reported separate from wayne-crazy for reasons. i think theres like 12 specific requests plus 2 ideas of my own. i may put out a poll for the next one to write, but not until after school's out, because these fics are HUGE time-eaters for me. speaking of, are non-tumblr-users able to vote on polls?
Welcome to Gotham U: this was again, me doing shit bc why not. will probably add more in the style that i first posted, but i doubt i will write any prose for it. if you would like to give it a try, please reach out, i'd love to see what you write!
One Diamond: every time i touch this i make the cliffhanger worse lmao. i finally do have a direction, but execution is gonna have to wait a while.
The Young, Innocent, and Righteous: this is mostly just for me anyway, but i'm just gonna say that i'm waiting until i finish watching miraculous season 5 before i go any further
AS you wish: i have 5 more requests to do and i am so sorry to everyone waiting you do not deserve this lmao. i promise im trying, i love your ideas, it just takes me a really long time to fill in the rest and then actually write it. the next one on my list is particularly hard to pin down and so it's halting the ones behind it to. if not before, then after finals i will sit and bang my head on the keyboard until something good comes out
Light Isn't Fadin': soooooo many people have asked me about this one oof. SOMEDAY, i swear. right now its a huge, nebulous, hulking monster and im sorry it's just not happening yet.
A christmas carol: wait until december. please
Father's Day: june.
A Little Problem: over the summer, i will watch marvel movies until they once again hijack my brain and fuel this to completion. maybe.
easter eggs: how the fuck did i forget this lmao. i'm doing as much as i can in april, but when the month is done, i'm sorry, we'll all be waiting until next lenten season. hopefully it won't come to that.
aaaaand i THINK that's finally it. there's also a bunch of random paragraphs in word and google docs that may appear, not to mention ideas that kidnap me in dark alleys. but i also have like a good half dozen other wips for other places that im trying to attend to, so please be forgiving if it seems like its taking a while to post something as sprite.
as always, i love questions, comments, concerns, even some complaints, so feel free to interact.
See ya when I see ya!

The top 28's comments on their fancams, translated
Hi team!
As we wait for Episode 11 to be fully available and translated and whatnot, here is a bit of content for you.
Each trainee posted a comment on their fancam. I translated the comments with google translate, so I apologize for any inaccuracies or confusing phrasing (there is a lot of that). My Korean is extremely limited and at least Google translate gives us the gist! I’ve also chosen ten of the fancams to link to, based on nearly random choice, so don’t read too much into it.
It's all after the read more.
Note: When it says “SK”, I think from context they mean “Star Creator” not “South Korea” (it’s a transliteration thing that it’s a K not a C)
I'm also listing how many views each fan cam has, as of the time of posting.

3. Han Yu Jin  238k views
Hellooooooooo star creators!!
I am Han Yujin, who has returned to the real real water clothes I mentioned before🍑🍑
Among the lyrics of <Say My Name>, there is a line that says ‘I want to do something appropriate for my age’.
In the meantime, I only showed strong performances to the star creators,
These are the lyrics I wrote myself with the meaning of 'Actually, I'm back with a refreshing and cute concept that I've never done before' haha
Since this contest song is our new song, not a cover song, I was more greedy, so I prepared a lot!!!
As much as I was in charge of the killing part, I prepared hard to show you a lot of pretty images.
Star creators, please love our <Say My Name> a lot 😍😍💗💗

Pomegranate 🦊 Star Creators💖!!! I missed you so much😭❤
While doing Boyz Planet, this mission was the most fun!
The reason was that it was so amazing to hear individual voices while recording with our team members,
The new dance (penguin dance) in the <Say My Name> choreography is so cute.
I hope the star creators do a cover dance for the penguin dance in the future! (I can't wait to see what you do)🐧🤧
I was able to create such good memories thanks to the support and love of the star creators🌠
And thanks to the star creators, I got a chance to stand on stage again!
While preparing for the stage, I thought a lot about what I wanted to achieve the most.
As much as we prepared the stage happily, I hope that many people will feel good enough to fly away after seeing our new song.
Also, I hope you will see the <Say My Name> stage and laugh a lot and be happy!
So, if I did well (but I don't know if I did really well), when you're reading this comment, I hope the star creators hahahahaha!
Star creators, take care of your health, love yourself a lot (of course I love star creators), and eat a lot of delicious food!
Pomegranate🦊Star Creator💖 You are incomparably more precious 🍄

Hello SK guys, I'm Gunwook!!!
First of all, I am so happy and grateful that I can do the enguard song that I wanted to do.
While preparing this song, it was personally very difficult to say that it was Gun-wook's ordeal.
I thought a lot because I wanted to show a new side of myself, tried my hand at vocals, and felt a lot of pressure as a top nine and a killing part.
Still, it was a valuable time for me to challenge my limits, bump into, and grow.
I was assimilated into the passion of the team members and practiced really hard together, and I burned my will to work hard even for the rest of the members who unfortunately passed away🔥
The difficulty of the song itself is too difficult, and the concept and atmosphere are too difficult.
In the next mission, I will come back with a better and more mature image. Until then, please continue to love me!! I'm a man who always reciprocates hahaha
I ask for a lot of love for my Enguard fancam. I love you❤‍🔥

This is Kum Jun-hyun who transformed into the strongest prince in the universe.
I was really looking forward to being able to play Enguard... … Aaaaaaaaaaa!
I prepared hard while thinking of the people I couldn't be with unfortunately.
Actually, I haven't done much until late to death like this, but Hotaek hyung
I really worked harder because I and the other team members were burning their passion so hotly that it was about 5723 degrees 🔥🔥
I did it right before sunrise ,,,,, With this mission, Kum Jun-hyun was able to develop further.
Seriously, this fancam could be the last, the strongest cutie in the universe
I'll explode your heart, so please watch it a lot
Owner,,,, Please join me,,,, Alabyung ~😘

Hello Star Creators!!
It's Hoetaek!!🐔
Finally, we can show you the stage of the 3rd mission “Artist Battle”.
From the first time I heard the song Angad, I thought, “This is the song,” and from the moment 10 of us were together❤ to now🔥
From stage ideas to choreography and lyrics, there is no part that our hands have not touched.
It seems to be a stage prepared after thinking really hard!!
As much as all the team members ran with one mind for the perfect stage🏃🏻
Star creators, please enjoy watching!!
Because it is a stage filled with our sincerity and our story of challenging every moment and bumping into each other.
I would be very, very grateful if you watch me sing🎤 with sincerity!!!
Star Creators, I love you so much

Hello Star Creators and J Stars!!! 🌟 How are you~
You already know that I really, really, really really want to do the song ‘Over Me’ for this artist battle!! I was so proud and excited because I was able to do Over Me.😁
First of all, thank you so much to Star Creators for choosing Over Me for me, and thanks to Star Creators, I'm also grateful that I can sing such a great song!! 🙏
And it was really fun to be able to enjoy this stage with good teammates this time. 💕
Over Me is the first time I've tried my dark and sexy concept, so please understand and I hope you like it ㅠㅠ
I will work hard so that I can show you a good stage and a cool image next time! promise promise! 🤙
This was his message that was already in English:
Hey Star Creators and Jaystars~ Hope everybody's been having an excellent first quarter of 2023! 🗓
First of all, I wanted to say thank you to everyone for voting me into this wonderful song~
It's a pleasure and an honor that you chose me to be a part of this memorable process and I hope I was able to sing it well enough!
This was my first time trying a dark and sexy concept so I hope I did okay... This time the choreography was on the difficult side for me and singing live was as well. 😅
Anyway, thank you for supporting me this far and I will make sure to work even harder to show you guys even better stages in the future. 💛 Love you guys, never forget! 💛 INOUIO ❤

Hello Star Creators!
This stage is a bit more you guys💦 Surprising!!
Cute and lively!! 🔆 I'm back in shape!!
I'm so sorry that SKs spend their valuable time watching my fancams, and I'm always grateful.
Thank you for always showing interest in me and I'm so happy every day because you like my lacking side 🎶
Now it's the last stage before the finals, and I think it'll be another stage that I'm very satisfied with, including the 1st and 2nd mission stages!!✨
It's too bad that I couldn't come back with a better look because I didn't have enough practice time🌻
Still, please support my dancing and singing a lot in the future and watch my progress!!!
I love you so much, thank you so much, and thank you for making me unforgettable moments in my life.
Until now, it was Wake One Park Hanbin!!😛

And the sound source came out, I hope you listen to this song every night😉
There are still many concepts Ricky can do, so please support me a lot until the end!
English message:
Thank you for voting me into this amazing song, when I first heard of "over me'' I knew that I need to do it, thank you for giving me this chance, because of you guys I got the opportunity to do my favorite dark and sexy concept and rnb song.
From practicing, preparing the stage, to recording this song, I enjoyed every moment.
Although this is a hard song to perform live, overdose teammates helped each other to overcome the problems, we will be coming back😉.
Hope this beautiful song can be with you every night, and hope you always be over me.

Hello Star Creators!!
This 3rd stage...I prepared really hard🔥🔥
While preparing in a shorter time than other teams
To the star creators so that they can somehow get on stage
We prepared really hard with the goal of only showing our cool side.
At first, I lost a lot of confidence and was upset.
Looking at my friends who are working hard next to me, I also resolute myself
I tried my best to avoid damaging the team as much as possible.
Our switch that was completed like that 🕹 How do you like it?
Even though we lacked a lot, we did our best, so we have no regrets😤
I practiced a lot for the last gateway to the final, and with a more relaxed and satisfied appearance
I wanted to finish it but...😭
Still, thank you so much for allowing me to experience a lot while preparing for the 3rd stage🥰
So that I can go to the finals and reap the beauty of the end
Please vote a lot...👏🏻🙏🏻
I love you sincerely❤❤

Message 1: Korean
Hello, this is Haruto
It was a leader who lacked a lot, but I am so grateful that the members believed in me and followed me.
There were a lot of adversities and hardships, but I'm so glad that I was able to overcome them and successfully finish the stage, and I'm proud of how hard I prepared.
I hope you continue to support our members and me!
Thank you for always supporting and trusting me
I want to continue to work harder and meet you guys on the final stage❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥
I love you Star Creators❤❤❤💖💖💖
Message 2: Japanese
Every time I did a mission, I thought, ``I've never been pushed like this before,'' but this time, too, I managed to break the record.
As a killing part, I feel that I had a lot of hardships because I had a great sense of responsibility as a leader.
However, I had a lot of regrets about the second mission, and I was determined to push myself to death this time, so for some reason I felt that it was painful.
And I am grateful to have been blessed with such wonderful members.
Thanks to the gals, I was able to laugh all the time even when I was having a hard time, and I am grateful that they took care of the maknaes together. The maknae did their best even when they were half asleep! Thanks dear~
And I appreciate Hiroshi Ouji* more than anyone else. (*That’s the translation but it must be Wang Zihao from context -- I don’t know why it says this, it’s probably an inside joke.)
He was the only one who came to SUPERCHARGER on his own will, but when he was kicked out of Over Me and when I asked him why he chose SUPERCHARGER, I fell in love with him when he said "for you". As expected, I thought that my husband really loved it.
It was very reassuring just to have Hiroshi on the team, and he's a beautiful human being who keeps wiping my tears with a tissue when I cry almost every day.
I love you Hiroko💘💘💘💘💘
I would be happy if you could continue to support me as well as the members of Superchajaa. I will always be grateful to all the star creators. I love it. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Message 3: English
Honestly preparing Supercharger was not easy at all.
But thinking about star creators and not wanting to disappointing you guys gave me so much power.
I'm always grateful for star creators, who are the reason for my existence.(sounds weird but true i don't know how to word it differently)
I am just SO GLAD we finished successfully and I am  SUPER relieved we're all satisfied with our stage. The crowd screaming "SUPERCHARGER" in unison was absolutely LEGENDARY and INCREDIBLE 😎😎😎😎😎
Also, I'm very grateful to have been able to he in such a great team.
Our teams unnies helped me so much babysitting the maknaes when i was tired parenting , and they always gave us a good laugh when we needed one. And our maknaes worked so hard for our perforamance so plaese check their fancams too !😋😋
And lastly special thanks to my husband Zihao for always being there for me when i needed someone to hug.
For always wiping my tears with a kleenex everyday. Since he was the only one who actually willed to come to Supercharger, one day out of curiosity i asked him why he chose to come to supercharger. You know, when he said he made that choice
FOR ME..........................😢😢😢
I knew i chose the right person to marry. 🥰🥰🥰 Lol
He is such a pure and warmhearted hyung, one of the best hyungs.
Thank you so much hyung, love you.
Anyways!!!
Thank you star creators once again for coming to watch and please keep on supporting our Supercharger team!!
I hope i can see you guys at the finale.
I promise ill work my butt off more until it dissapears. 🍑

Also, this member is really... 🙃 I think I prepared harder because I'm such an elite member😂
How many ideas meetings are there? I am really looking forward to and very excited to prepare and show a better stage by putting our heads together, researching, practicing, and repeating to show you a better stage after worrying a lot!! (I stayed up all night… heh)

🌟 Hello creators~
I am Shining Bling Bling✨ Cheon-gwan “Louis”.
I came back with a new look this time with the new artist battle song “Over me“.👏
As soon as I heard this song, I kept feeling that I had to do it unconditionally, and I never got tired of it no matter how many times I listened to it, so I was so happy when I practiced.
The third mission is very important to me, so I practiced really hard because I wanted to catch the concept well, so thank you for watching the fancam.🥰
While researching the meaning of the lyrics of the song Over Me, I kept thinking, “Can I really do well?”, but as I gradually found a feeling in the music and choreography, my confidence increased.
I hope the star creators are very good to me.
And whenever I perform on “Boys Planet,” I always think of it as the last stage and I want to show you what I have prepared.
In the future, I will continue to challenge different concepts and appear as a new “Louis” in front of star creators.
Please give lots of love and vote. Thank you!!!💛🧡💛

Thanks to the star creators who voted for me to do Over Me, the time from practice to preparing for the stage was so happy and fun☺
So I just wanted to say thank you so much
To be honest, I was really taken aback at first because I chose the song without knowing it had no rap, but thinking about it again, I've never shown my vocals to you on stage.
So, I prepared this stage with the idea that it would be a great opportunity to show a new side of me!
As much as you let me do the song I wanted, I really ran harder than ever to repay you with a great stage🔥🔥🔥
I am so happy to be able to show you the stage with a new song with the most confident and suitable concept.

The Downfall of Susan St. Clair: Locker Notes
Monday
Sorry I couldn’t spend any time with you today. Buddy waylaid me and I couldn’t get away. I’ll make time tomorrow, okay?
Susan
Tuesday
Buddy won the debate! I mean, there aren’t really winners and losers to a debate. It is just an opportunity to explain your views as a presidential nominee. But Buddy totally won! And he was on TV! Jane completely froze up. Ironic really, considering how much she goes on at school. I guess she wasn’t ready for the big leagues.
I’m going to be busy for a while, helping Buddy with his campaign.
Susan
Wednesday
I hate Jane Facciano. There I said it. Her whole campaign was to make school fun for everyone, but it seems like she’s just trying to hurt everyone. After all, it was all her fault Buddy even got on that counter. And now he can’t play in the next match! I wasn’t allowed to go to the hospital with him. But Mum helped me pick out a nice flower arrangement to send to his room. I just hope the pity votes make up for the embarrassment.
Sorry about what Rosemary said to you. She didn’t really mean it.
Susan
Thursday
Well, well, well. It seems that everyone had finally realized what a danger Jane is to the school. They show her some support and the whole school gets their jackets taken away. Rosemary is furious that she can’t wear her boyfriend’s letterman jacket. And Buddy looks like a wounded soldier. Everyone hates the Pink Ladies again.
Are you coming to the game tomorrow?
Susan
Friday
Maisie kicked at a pebble, watching it bounce away. She had brought her book with her but couldn’t bring herself to read. The school had closed early for the Football match, though it was highly encouraged that students should use their free time to attend the game. If they couldn’t win the game – and honestly, even with their star quarterback in top condition, they never won anything – they could at least pack the stands. Solidarity for their losing men. Or something. Thus, Maisie was hiding underneath the stands. Occasionally, when the cheerleaders tried to warm up the crowd, or the brass band played, she’d be deafened by the resulting roar. But for the most part, it was a fairly good hiding spot. If she looked through people’s legs, she could just about spot Susan. But she didn’t feel like looking.
It had been completely unexpected. One second, she was waiting in line for the cafeteria, looking forwards to getting some lunch and potentially seeing Susan, the next she was on the floor, someone else’s lunch staining her skirt, looking up at Rosemary. She supposed, later, that she had been in Rosemary’s way in some form, that it was her fault for not paying attention to everything that was happening around her. But that didn’t warrant Rosemary’s response. Hurt and humiliated, Maisie had glanced towards Susan only to find her blatantly looking in the other direction. From all the books she’d read, Maisie was fairly sure one of the most important rules to being friends was to have each other’s back. That didn’t mean letting them be bullied, particularly when the bully was also your friend. Maybe she’d been mistaken on Susan’s definition of ‘friend’.
The notes had continued through the week, carefully slid through the grating in Maisie’s locker, each penned in careful, precise, handwriting. They had quickly become, rather than cute messages passed between friends, an outlet for Susan to write about Buddy and Jane. And yet, Maisie had attended the Football game and chose a location to hide where she could see Susan, all because the stupid hopes still filling her head.
As the game started, Maisie retrieved her notebook from her bag, found a clean spot to sit, and started writing her own note back.
Friday
I understand that things are busy right now, particularly since the elections are coming up. I understand that Rosemary was just angry she could no longer wear her boyfriend’s jacket.
I want to be your friend. But not if it means you won’t be a friend back.
Maisie
The notebook was filled with similar iterations of the letter. They ranged from cursing Susan out for not helping, large portions scribbled out with enough force to tear the paper, to self-deprecating lines that became smudged with tears. Taking a breath, she ripped the page out, stuffed her notebook back into her bag, and headed back to the school. If she thought for much longer about it, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to go through with it. Susan’s locker was tauntingly close to a rubbish bin. But she closed her eyes and thrust the note into Susan’s locker and ran.
Dot trotted down the corridor beside Susan, complaining loudly about the nerve of the Pink Ladies. How dare they pin the blame on Ms. McGee when it was their antics that caused the jacket ban in the first place? She knew the cheerleader wasn’t listening to her rambling, but it cut through the silence. So, she kept talking, and the topic quickly spun round to Jane’s promise to get Johnny Vavoom to DJ for the school dance. She kept talking as they arrived at Susan’s locker, pausing for her to pick up a textbook she’d forgotten.
“Do you think he’ll play …”
Dot trailed off as she saw the expression on Susan’s face.
“Susan?”
Susan crumpled the note that had been left in her locker, quickly shaking off the expression of horror and guilt that had startled Dot. The note was slipped into her bag.
“It’s nothing.”
Dot nodded. It wasn’t nothing. Dot had been friends with Susan to know how strong her mask was. There was no way something that could draw such emotion onto her face, that could break down her mask, was just nothing. But if Susan didn’t want to talk about it, if it hurt Susan to even think about it, she wasn’t going to press the issue. She didn’t like to see her friend hurting.

I'm the first anon who asked about the vma! When I said people were saying the awards were rigged because BTS didn't send an acceptance/thank you speech, I didn't mean that they were the ones who bought the award. Many people said that it was rigged, because originally it was supposed to go to the girls and everyone in the industry/award show staff knew it was going to go to them. This is what they/we meant by rigged, because they couldn't have been eligible, yet they got a nom, and a win (=rigged, because possibly paid for) But then it was announced that BTS actually won, and since they always or almost always send acceptance videos but they didn't this time, we assumed that they didn't even knew about the win. Meaning they weren't supposed to win, because the other company bought the award for the girls. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say 😅 I said this in my previous ask too, but I agree with you: since they are on a break as a group I honestly don't see them doing thank you videos, especially not for awards like this (and especially not after the official bighit/bts account barely acknowledged the voting at all). Maybe they show up for year end award shows, but to be honest I don't think they will 😅
I hope you understand what I was trying to say, I wasn't implying that BTS bought the award at all.
Also one more thing: the VMA's viewership was very low this year. BTS didn't attend last year, it was around 900k, BTS didn't attend this year and it was 600k :/ So if they did this to boost their viewership that's highly unprofessional of them. But it's an american award show which is not that high and mighty anymore so what do we expect 🤷‍♀️
About the girls if you let me reflect on them: I don't know them that well, but I do know that their label has pushed their comebacks back a lot. The girls themselves talked a lot about wanting to release new music, and they themselves didn't know when their comeback would come. I think they still want to make music, but I wouldn't blame them if they disbanded after their contract ends next year and did other things that interest them. It's kind of sad that they are a 6 year old group and only have like 30 songs under their name because their label literally didn't lift a finger to give them songs and comebacks.
That's all. I just wanted to clear up what I said with my broken English. Also how did they win group of the year but not best kpop?? Like the category was literally made for them just because americans couldn't stomach the thought of a successful asian group getting nominated in a main category... And they had a huge year last year, and lost 💀 the math isn't adding up.
Hi anon, thanks for coming back.
Ahhhh okay, okay. Personally, I don't know, like I said BTS doesn't always send a thank you video, this time it may be that they just didn't want to. BTS can be unpredictable in that kind of thing honestly.
That one of them tweeted about it is enough and the photo they chose was pretty funny and a bit ironic considering everything that happened a few hours before.
Regardless of the fact that BTS deservedly won, those shows are always rigged one way or the other, undeserving artists win an award and other deserving ones all walk away empty-handed. I don't think BTS will be back next year but who knows, maybe one or more members will do it individually.
About the ratings, I am not surprised, since a few years ago those kinds of shows are getting low ratings, I repeat not for nothing the grandmothers did what they did this year with the presentation of BTS, I guess MTV thought the same thing would happen with this group and their fans.
About BP… I have nothing to say, hopefully, they can do what they really want to do or keep doing what they have been doing between so much time off from group activities.
And the guys didn't win that award because of the sponsors maybe? they can change everything. And well, the other group had to win something important I guess? I don't know.
Again, thanks for coming back, anon!

Day One Hundred Seventy-Five
Our seniors’ last day of class was today. These are the kids who were freshmen when Covid hit, so they’ve had a wild ride through high school, and now it’s over. And everyone I spoke to agreed that today came fast.
They decided their “senior prank” would be camping out in the school parking lot overnight and having breakfast together before classes started this morning. I’m pretty sure our admins knew about it in advance, and the police did swing by to make sure no real shenanigans were going on, but there weren’t. There were just kids having fun. And I think it was brilliant. I burst out laughing when I pulled in this morning and saw them all finishing their food and packing up.
Throughout the day, a lot of them- whether they were in APGOV with me first semester, or in World as ninth graders- came by to say goodbye and thank you, which was so sweet. And, of course, I had my current APGOV seniors for one final class at the end of the day, but I’ll come back to that because first I had to teach my sections of World.
The World students are working on their multigenre projects, and I love that they’re buying into the idea of finishing the year strong. I also loved seeing groups of friends helping each other out: making sure they were sticking to what they’d written on their planners, giving organizational advice, offering encouraging words, checking each other’s work. It really made me smile.
And then, yeah, APGOV. Students started by sharing what they’d done to participate politically (interviewing elected officials, attending town meetings, voting for the first time in local elections, and more) and reflecting on why their participation matters. I applauded them, and told them that’s the real takeaway: it matters, I hope they keep doing it. I graded everything really quickly (as I do), and they filled out a course reflection while I did that. It’s helpful to get their feedback, and they also wrote me some really sweet notes. Then I showed them their final grades, and- as is my tradition- gave them each a letter with one last lesson from me. I told them what I hoped they’d take with them, and how much of a privilege it was to be their teacher, and wished them well in their futures.
As they stood up to leave, I could see them looking at each other, and around the room, and I heard a few say things like, “Wow, this is really it.” And I let them go with my favorite parting words:
Class dismissed.
