I paced up & down the small area near the entrance of the hospital. The door securely closed, all I could do was wait for someone to rescue me & reunite me with my wife & her bump.

Did we wait too long to come to the hospital?

Is bump ok? Why wasn't it moving? When did it stop?

When will they ever let me in?!

You still out here the porter said, nearly two hours had passed. I replied by sobbing uncontrollably. 'Come on, follow me' he said and up we went to level 12, the maternity assessment unit.

K was laying on the trolley looking at me with a 'tell me it's all going to be ok' face on.

Baby is distressed. Their heart rate racing, dropping, racing, dropping. There's not enough fluid in there, babies lungs won't be ready, can we wait 12 hours.. the midwives discussed in front of us.

The obstetrician lining up her C Sections for the evening came in to see whether we were going to join the queue for theatre. She felt K's bump... she looked at the report from the heart monitor... get her ready she's going into theatre first.

A sudden rush of energy in the room, a C section quickly described to us, an anesthetist arrives and starts talking through the pain meds, the epidural, the odds of it going wrong... then they threw blue scrubs at me. Right I thought, this is happening, the baby is coming tonight.

32 weeks 2 days.

I rubbed K's foot. It will all be ok. Baby is coming tonight. We can do this.
