The last of us...is a bit...hm

SPOILERS OH MY GOD SPOILERS

Okay so just finished episode 8 of the last of us HBO....I feel physically ill. And I’ve been through the game, I knew what was coming. 

But somehow seeing David as an actual human being...God, that was genuinely a traumatic viewing experience in a way I don’t recall the game being.

I can’t say I’ve really seen a depiction of a pedophile in media before because super graphic, dark, violent media is typically not my jam, but this was a hell of a first experience. Props to Scott Shepherd because I was physically revolted from the cage scene onwards, jesus christ----

The details of the game are really foggy in my memory, so I don’t remember how explicit it was made that David would have assaulted Ellie, but oh my lord almighty I thought I was going to throw up. Again, props to Bella and Scott for the absolutely incredible performance but I was hyperventilating as much as Ellie.

And the reunion with Joel???? I remembered getting teary eyed when it happened in the game, but somehow it was just more impactful with real people. Just the look in Ellie’s eyes as she realizes that it’s Joel and she might be safe--that her person is okay and he’s here and she can hug her dad? I was doing that weird ragged-breathing-almost-crying thing, which most definitely did not happen with the game.

So yeah, quite possibly the most traumatizing piece of media I’ve ever consumed. But well done to Neil and Craig and Pedro and Scott and Bella but also quite literally fuck all of you <3
